Youth views shape refurb plan
Young people in Sleaford have been extremely supportive on how the refurbishment of the Sleaford Leisure Centre takes shape. As part of the £2.85 million refurbishment plan North Kesteven District Council consulted with young people to ensure that a broad range of views and opinions were expressed and considered. During the summer the NK Youth Council took part in the consultation which resulted in all elements; splash pool, steam and sauna and a gym extension being considered in the plans. After extensive discussions with officers, Youth Council members felt that it was important to keep

all four elements. North Kesteven Officers took this on board and were able to work with designers to make this happen. Final designs are still being developed but they will include a splash pool, sauna and steam and a gym extension. Leisure and Culture Manager, Mike Lock said “It has been fantastic to see how enthusiastic the young people of this area have been about the project. The views of young people are extremely important to the council, especially on issues that will have an effect on them in the future.”

Opportunity knocks for new apprentices During North Kesteven District Council’s £2.85m refurbishment of the leisure centre it is joining with contractors RG Carters Building Ltd and Eco2 Lincs Ltd to fund an apprenticeship scheme. Eco2’s Operations Director, David McDonald said “Eco2 is delighted that the first two apprenticeship opportunities have been agreed. We will continue working with North Kesteven to promote further uptake of the £75,000 fund made available through the development of the 40MW Sleaford renewable power station.” Two Level 3 Advanced Technical Apprenticeships have been offered in Construction Site Supervision and Construction Contracting Operations with RG Carters, which
will last beyond next September’s completion of the Sleaford project and transfer on to other work with the company, offering vast scope for progression. Carters’ Lincoln branch manager Chris Carr said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting to get into the Construction Industry. I trained through the apprenticeship scheme and it has opened no end of doors for me in the company.” A large portion of the funding for the apprenticeships has been made available by Eco Lincs as part of its package of community contributions as it establishes the biomass renewable energy plant in Sleaford. Council Leader Cllr Mrs Marion Brighton OBE said:
“The District Council has helped to part-fund these apprenticeships in order to provide young people future employment opportunities. We strongly believe in building the economy within this district and working in partnership with others in order to unlock this potential.” Apprentices will be named in the new year.
Apprentices will begin on site in the New Year
