Tis the Sea-Sun for Santa in Short Pants Story by NOKP staff, Photos by Adam Porter Shorts in December? You better believe it, honey. Even Santa had short pants on when the time came to deck the halls and line up for the 2012 Christmas Cart Parade. This year’s theme was “Tis the Sea-Sun,” and the residents of both Kings Point and Sun City Center came out in force to celebrate. There were boats and sleighs, dolphins and reindeer, elves, choirs, guitar pickers and the occasional mermaid. What a party! Even the weather seemed to cooperate with the theme. It was toasty. Spectators lined the parade route in golf shirts and plaid shorts. More than a few mentioned that they wished they brought water. But, despite the unseasonable heat, everyone kept a smile on their face. After all, this was the Christmas cart parade, and there was much to see and tons of fun to be had. And certainly a lot of colorfully decorated carts to see. The official count was 160, but there

were a handful of late entries. Whatever the final tally, the line of carts stretched more than a half mile long. “I have to give everyone credit.” Said Judy Pyle, “They all did a great job, and there were some carts that were really elaborate.” One of those elaborate creations belonged to Ron and Linda Ringenback. Ron, a retired engineer, designed and built a cart decorated with dolphins that actually moved when the cart was rolling. As he cruised by the onlookers on the parade route, the dolphins leapt out of the water alongside his cart. Ringenback said his creation included over 90 square feet of plywood, dozens of screws, aluminum rods, steel bars and PVC along with 75 feet of garland, gallons of paint and two four foot photographs of real dolphins. “This took me over 100 hours of labor and lots of cash, but I sure think it will be a crowd pleaser.” Ringenback said. One bittersweet moment in the morning came when Ann Marie Leblanc, this year’s Grand

Marshal, was recognized for her tireless support of and work in her community. As she accepted her recognition award, Leblanc announced that she would be moving away from Sun City Center. This wonderful lady will surely be missed. After the parade residents stuck

around to party in the carnival atmosphere of the Winter Festival. Attractions included a live band, vendors, games, yummy fair food and a classic car show sponsored by Minto. “Elvis” and “Marilyn” were also on hand for dances and photos.

Ribbon cutting celebrates King’s Point history • Gazebo is the first step in Heritage Park project By NOKP Staff Perhaps you have noticed it as you passed, a bright and shiny new gazebo just off Kings Boulevard. The blue-roofed wooden structure is just the first step in a larger park development project that will celebrate the history and accomplishments of the Kings Point community. The construction of benches and walkways will begin in 2013. Florida-friendly plants and trees will be planted along the walkway to provide beautiful, shady spots to relax, chat with friends or simply enjoy one of those trademark gorgeous Florida days. Set directly in front of the gazebo is a monument plinth. The monument, bearing the name “Kings Point Heritage Park,” also lists several important dates in the history and development of the Kings Point Community. The community certainly has grown through the years. Kings Point was incorporated in July 1972. Andover A through E were started in 1973 and a team of 8 oversaw the project. The first residents closed on their home on June 13, 1973. The streets

The Editor’s Corner Anticipating the unthinkable By Adam Porter This one is a bit personal… As the father of three sons, two of them very young, since I first learned of the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school, I have not been “right.” At any given moment, the images, reports and themes are not far from my mind. I find it easy to get lost in borrowed grief…and then slip into a nightmare. I think about those parents of twins who had 3 children at the school. Two survived. One of the twins, Noah, was killed. How do you reconcile something like that—the joy of seeing two of your children again with that empty place at the table? What was it like for them as they waited, hugging two of their children, for the news that Noah would not be coming home? The journalist in my wants to explore the facts, find the story, discover the motives and the reasons and the reactions. The dad in me wavers between wanting to hug my boys and never let go and finding the guy who did this and...best not say. Of course, there can be no vengeance in this case, so all that is left is the healthier option. My boys were out of town, visiting their grandparents, last Friday. I could not hug them then. I picked them up on Saturday…and hugged them tightly. That is helping, as I believe similar reactions are helping individuals across our country cope. The nation itself, however, is not faring so well. America has fallen again onto the merry-go-round. Fear. Rage. Anger. Hurt. Fear again. Anguish. Disbelief. The knee jerk reaction to all of these things is a desire to control. To make new laws, to create new systems. To attempt to categorize and organize chaos. To do whatever it takes to STOP THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN. It is an honest and understandable response. It is also impossible. When I was little, my family lived on an island. Living on or near the water requires a few immutable rules. As any sailor or fisherman can tell you, the ocean is an unforgiving mistress. For a small child, the tide can be just as perilous. We were given rules, guidelines, restrictions and conditions. Every year, millions of other children receive these same limitations from their own parents. Yet, every day, according to the CDC, 10 Americans die from non-boatrelated drowning in the United States. That’s 3,650 each year. Two of these ten are children under the age of 14. Many of these people do nothing wrong. On two occasions, the sea has nearly taken my life. Yet still I swim.

When my family moved off the island we bought a horse ranch in rural Hillsborough County. Again, my brothers and I were given a set of nonnegotiable rules with regard to the horses. What behavior to watch for. Where to stand. How to act. How to move. Transgress any of these rules and the result could be a potentially fatal skull fracture. That’s simple arithmetic when a horse’s hoof is the size of your face. And yet, one could do everything right and, for no apparent reason and without any warning, the horse may decide to buck, kick or bite anyway. This was a risk each of us took every time we entered a 10x10 stall with a 1,400-pound animal or climbed on its back. Most of us carry scars. My brother-in-law trains polo horses. When my eldest boy was invited to visit them one summer to help with the training, I did not hesitate to agree. I offered him the same instruction I was given. Instruction that may have saved my life, but had not protected me from broken bones and concussions. My point? Precautions are necessary, but they can never eliminate danger or chance or pain. We cannot, as a society, control evil any more than we can control the tide or a skiddish quarter horse. We are not prescient, and we are not omnipotent. No human system can protect us from random acts of evil any more than any system can bring about utopia. Both good and evil are the result of human choices. Some choose to do good. Some choose to do evil. Some choose to do nothing. The last of these choices most often results in evil. Fortunately, it is also the choice most easily changed. But this practical reality has not stopped the pundits from demanding provision for prevention. To those calling for a perfect world, I ask: Where can one buy a scale on which to measure the deeds, laws or regulations that will, with certainty, bring about the greater good, and by what means can that measure be calibrated? Is it the human ego or our fear reflex that leads us to believe we can utterly eliminate chaos, perversion and selfishness? I can’t answer that question, any more than I could be certain that a horse would never kick me—or my son— in the chops. But I do know one thing. This is not a systematic issue. It is a human one. Like most of our “societal ills,” it begins and ends with a series of individual decisions made by individual people, folks who have no crystal ball and cannot imagine

January, 2013

a set of consequences that could lead to unspeakable tragedies such as these. They are unthinkable, by definition. Hindsight may make all of us wiser, but it should not make any of us increasingly judgmental. Laws do not dissuade the lawless. They are rarely an impediment to evil of any kind. Only humans with love and goodwill in their hearts can light a candle in that darkness. The candle cannot eliminate the dark, but it can keep it at bay. Do not mistake this as a call for anarchy. Instead, it is an appeal to those who rule to do so motivated by the better angels of their nature. Rage can never beget reason. Nor can fear. Therefore we must legislate from neither. We must make laws regardless of extreme emotion, but instead with a steadfast commitment to doing what is

good and what is right. Not an expressly passionless process, but an entirely sober one. Only perfect love can cast out fear. Perfect law, even if such a thing could exist, cannot dispel fear or danger or risk or hate or even transparent evil. It can only categorize it, examine it and find it guilty. But the law is not the only resource available to man. We also have our will to act. So, where will you stand? Into which cause will you invest your heart and mind and soul? Will you stand with those who use evil as a political ploy, or will you stand with those intent on doing good—in deed and in regulation—despite the dangers? Only you can decide. But, please, decide. There are many out there committed to doing some good, and we need your help.

He wants to please and is so eager to learn. Rocky is a thinker too. He can often be found quietly sitting in his kennel in deep thought. This Lab would make a great edition to any household. As part of his adoption, Rocky will be neutered, micro chipped, and brought current on his shots. DOB: December 2, 2011.

Spooky is a very cute little black kitten with the happiest face. He really would like to go home with a loving new owner to his forever home. Spooky was found as a stray; won’t you stop in to give Spooky your care and love. As part of his adoption Spooky has been brought current on his shots, and will be micro chipped and neutered. Approximate DOB: September 12, 2012.

Thanks to the Sun City Center Community Foundation. A recent grant from the Community Foundation to the C.A.R.E. Animal Shelter in Ruskin provided funding for a new roof over the shelters maintenance and storage building. Shown are employees from Cardinal Roofing who were finishing up work on the new roof. C.A.R.E. volunteers are very grateful to the Foundation for their continuing support allowing the shelter to save and adopt thousands of homeless, abandoned and abused animals since 2001.

Even after being alone for two months, Babe is still playful, loving and trusting. She’s microchipped, declawed and vaccinated. All she needs is you. CERT president to address MOWW

Bill Barron, president of the Sun City Center Community Emergency Response Team [CERT], will be the guest speaker at the January 17, 2013 meeting of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) at the SSC Freedom Plaza Club Room. Mr. Barron will discuss the role of volunteer emergency response groups in disasters with special emphasis on the local CERT group. The CERT program is designed to complement professional Fire and Police organizations in disaster Bill Barron, situations where the normal rescue and medical CERT President services are overwhelmed. The 200+ local CERT members received training from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue under a FEMA-funded program and were deployed during Hurricane Charley. Since 2003, Mr. Barron has chaired the SCC Disaster Response Council; the group of volunteer local first responder organizations including the SCC EMS squad, Security Patrol, and amateur radio clubs. The Council meets annually to review emergency plans and coordinate activities with Hillsborough County Emergency Management personnel. A SCC-area resident since 1997, Bill was Chief Operating Officer for Diagnostek, Inc. and finance manager for various offshore GE affiliates.

MFST luncheon to support Operation Warm Heart

The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) held a special luncheon at the Freedom Plaza Club on December 6, 2013. The luncheon was held to present a donation to MSgt Brad Robbins, who was representing the First Sergeants at MacDill AFB. The First Sergeants support Operation Warmheart (OWH), which is an organization that assists Airman and their families in time of need. One of its primary missions is to provide emergency grants to MacDill AFB members. Operation Warmheart provides assistance to all branches of military service. They also provide various types of gift cards and gasoline to the military families. Warmheart funds are used to provide morale, health and welfare assistance to as many needy military families as funds will allow. A check for $2,000 was presented by Brigadier Colin Howgill, MFST Board Chairman, and in addition a check for $3,000, was presented

On the third Sunday of the month a group of golfers from he German-American Club of Sun City Center and Kings Point play a scramble alternating between either Sandpiper or Falcon Watch golf courses, with tee time at Noon. The foursomes are put together using handicaps to even all groups. This is definitely “for fun” scramble, with all players and non-playing partners meeting after golf for dinner at a local restaurant. Interested golfers (whether a club member, or not) please call Dieter Quitsch at 641-0157.

JSA Holiday Seminar a Hit Recently JSA Medical Group, 787 Cortaro Dr., hosted a Holiday Seminar that featured Dr. M. Theodora Carroll—“Dr. Theo”— who captivated the crowd of over 40 attendees for over an hour with witty anecdotes of her most recent accomplishment: that of completing her Seventh Iron Man World Championship Challenge in Kona, Hawaii. At age 69, “Dr. Theo” finished the last nine miles of the marathon component of the Iron Man with a broken ankle! Saying: “when we were kids there was nothing we liked to do more than run, around the yard go bike riding, or swim in the summer with friends. The Iron Man competition gave me the opportunity to relive my childhood doing ALL those things—however, ALL AT ONE TIME!” To qualify for the Iron Man title, a challenger has to run 26.2 miles, swim 2.4 miles and bike 112 miles and MUST complete the entire process in 17 hours or less! She captivated the crowd with laughter and educational “truth nuggets” about her private life as a former alcoholic and her fight against obesity, having lost over 100 pounds, and explained that her desire to participate in water sports with her children was her inspiration to change her lifestyle. Dr. Carroll is an adjunct Professor for the Department of Mental Health Counseling at USF. Ask Pete your questions about

I am not talking about that Sun City

John Bowker spoke to the SCC Men’s Club in November and everyone assumed it was going to be about Sun City Center. The presentation was devoted to the history of Sun City, FL which is just down the road from us. John entertained all by explaining the connection between Sun City, FL and Hollywood, CA. First National Pictures produced the movie Casablanca (starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid) and was the company that hoped to create a Hollywood East right here in Florida. Although plans of First National Pictures did not work out and they were subsequently bought out by Warner Brothers the company that distributed Casablanca. She took art classes at the Port Charlotte Cultural center, and later at the Punta Gorda Visual Arts Center. Shirley loves working in watercolor. She says she has much to learn and enjoys all the demonstrations and classes available here in the Sun City Area. Fred and Shirley travel 4 months a year in their motor home. They have been to every state, and many National Parks, and, of course, our wonderful Florida State Parks. Nova Scotia, Canada has become one of their favorite locations to spend the month of August. Photographs collected on these travels have provided Shirley with the incentive to paint. Please take time to stop by the Art Studio window to admire Shirley’s wonderful paintings.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker THE ART OF CARD-READING

CONFECTION COLLECTION

Card-reading -- the art of diagnosing how the unseen cards are divided -- is the backbone of good card play. Knowing where the missing cards are located is like playing a hand with all 52 cards exposed, and to play a hand well when all the cards are in view is seldom a difficult challenge. Consider this deal where declarer went wrong. East won the spade lead with the jack and continued with the A-K of spades. South ruffed the third spade, drew trumps, led the ten of diamonds from dummy and went up with the king after East followed low.

Solutions on Page 31

West won with the ace and returned the jack of diamonds to South’s queen. Declarer later tried a club finesse that failed, and the contract went down one. The critical clue that declarer missed (aside from East’s failure to play the ace with a singleton diamond in dummy) was that East had passed as dealer and was therefore highly unlikely to hold the ace of diamonds (having shown up with the A-K-J of spades and a singleton heart on the first five tricks). Once South assumes that West has the ace of diamonds, it becomes clear that instead of covering dummy’s ten of diamonds with the king, he should play low from his hand. In the actual case, even though West wins the diamond with the jack, he is stymied. A diamond return, whether high or low, allows South to score two diamond tricks with the help of a ruffing finesse and in that way eliminate his potential club loser. A spade or club return also allows South to avoid the club loser -- again with the aid of a ruffing finesse in diamonds -- and so make the contract. Either way, it turns out that East’s pass as dealer is the same as shouting from the rooftops that West has the ace of diamonds -and it is this significant clue that should enable South to find the winning line of play. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By Samantha Weaver

•It was Albert Einstein who offered the following explanation of relativity: “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.” •In Singapore, one of the colorful customs is training birds for singing competitions. It’s not always just a hobby, though; for some, it’s a serious -- and costly -- business. A single well-trained bird might sell for as much as $60,000. • If you’re an oenophile -- that’s an aficionado of wine -- you probably won’t be surprised to learn that as the cost of a wine goes up, so does a drinker’s appreciation of that wine. It seems that it’s not all about the quality of the vintage, though: In a recent study, tasters were offered two samples of the same wine, but each sample was labeled with a different price. The tasters overwhelmingly preferred the more expensive vintage. •Only one-fifth of homes in America are not air-conditioned. In the sweltering South, a mere 5 percent lack that vital amenity. •Those who study such things say that the wind power in an average hurricane is equivalent to 1.5 trillion watts. That’s the same amount of power that is generated by fully half of the entire world’s generating capacity. •The works of Agatha Christie have been translated more times into other languages than those of any other author in history. •Many people see dogs as doing heroic work in tandem with law enforcement and the military, but they’re not the only animals put to such use. In Mozambique, sniffer rats are being used to find unexploded land mines so experts can disarm them. They’re known as HeroRATs. Thought for the Day: “To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first. And, whatever you hit, call it the target.” -- Ashleigh Brilliant © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
