Sun City Center Golf Cart Parade a Smashing Success A Creative Case of Christmas Magic

In the late evening of December 6 Connie Lesko, Business DevelopmentCoordinator at Freedom Plaza was adding finishing touches to the Freedom Plaza entry in the annual Sun City Center Golf Cart Christmas Parade. On a bright Saturday morning, December 7 the finished entry joined a dazzling display of over 100 carts lined up at SCC Community Center, each more original than the last. An awesome sight! At Freedom Plaza, an out size golf cart that is ordinarily used to transport residents from one end of the campus to another had been transformed. Eight passengers boarded the cart that now sparkled with red, blue, silver tinsel and fringe, topped off with two large silver stars. In the spirit of the day the red clad residents of Freedom Plaza wearing Santa hats sang Christmas and patriotic songs as we rode along the parade route. The parade was greeted by the enthusiastic residents of Sun City Center lining the streets. Good cheer was the order of the day as “Merry Christmas” was heard over and over throughout the parade route. Near the end of the parade route an overworked battery died. The Freedom Plaza cart came to a complete stop. Like a bit of Christmas magic, people rushed to the stricken chariot to help. Willing hands pushed the big cart off to one side. Other neighbors helped solved the problem and sent us on our merry way. Yes, the spirit of Christmas giving is alive and well on the streets of SCC. All in all, a grand tribute to the Season we all love so much. As we celebrate the arrival of 2014, our shared wish for the New Year is“a lasting peace for all mankind, for this year and the years to come.”

It was a beautiful December day and the parade route was lined with hundreds of spectators.

By Phyllis Hodges To say that Grand Marshal Charley Belcher was impressed with the creativity SCC residents showed to reflect the 2013 Golf Car Parade’s theme, Sights and Sounds of the Season, is an understatement. “Some of these entries should go through an x-ray

to make sure there is a golf cart under there,” he commented following the parade. The threetime Emmy award-winning feature reporter for Fox TV also said, “If the world could have the sense of community that you have here, it would be a better world.” Continued on Page 3

SCC Shuffleboard Club Beats Rival Rice Creek Bayshore Shuffle Travel League Tournament

On Wednesday, December 11, 2013, the Sun City Center shuffleboard travel team was braced for their second match of the season with Rice Creek, the current league front-runner. It was the 4th match of this season’s 18-match tournament and was played here at the Sun City Center shuffleboard courts. The other two teams in the Bayshore Shuffle Travel League, Hawaiian Isles “A” and “B” also played their 4th match at Hawaiian Isles. Having been defeated by Rice Creek in their first game this year, the SCC travel team has held practices twice each week, with some players, also getting together to hold additional practices session in addition to participating in the SCC Shuffleboard Club regular play. It has apparently been working because the Sun City Center team had its best outing in the two years since the team was formed. This week’s match against Rice Creek resulted in a victory by Sun City Center over Rice Creek with a final score of 9 to 6. While Continued on Page 7

January Poem Submission From Above

The Editor’s Corner

Thanks

By E. Adam Porter, Editor in Chief, NOKP Before I write another word, there’s one thing I want to say. THANK YOU for reading the News of Kings Point. We started this publication back in 2009 with the goal of giving you a newspaper that reflected your community, that focused on all the things that make Kings Point and Sun City Center a great place to live and work and play. Year after year, you have responded by sending us your thanks – emails and letters and phone calls sharing your appreciation for this publication. Thank you. Now, most of us are familiar with the old saw about not doing good works for applause. There are endless versions, but, essentially, it goes a little something like this: “If you do good works expecting to be rewarded, you can expect to be disappointed.” The moral is that doing good is its own reward. Sometimes people either don’t or won’t see it or appreciate it. The lesson? Do good anyway. Maybe you heard about the recent robbery of a non-profit organization in our community. About two weeks before Christmas, someone stole a van full of bicycles and other gifts meant for poor migrant children. A friend of mine who owns a business in this community heard about the robbery on TV and decided to do something about it. He went to the Sun City Center Wal Mart and, with the help of two generous managers, purchased a trailer full of bicycles to replace those that were stolen. I met my friend over at the Wal Mart and helped him deliver the bikes. We arrived at the place, found an employee, and explained who we were and what we were about. Now, I can’t tell you exactly what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a frown, a dismissive wave and: “Drive around back.” But that’s what we got, so that’s what we did. The employee showed us where to put the bikes, and we unloaded the trailer. We finished and my friend offered the employee a smile and a “Merry Christmas.” The employee glanced at us, turned his back and walked away, along with a volunteer who stood by, watching us unload the bikes. The adults may not have appreciated the gifts, but there will be (at least) ten children who will be treated to a Christmas they will never forget. They will

never know the origin of those bikes, and that’s exactly how we want it. I can almost hear those shouts of joy on Christmas morning. I can see those first few tentative pedal rotations as the kid wobbles down the sidewalk. Sometime soon, in neighborhoods all over south county, there will be kids racing those bikes up and down the road, making endless laps in the driveway and, sometime next summer, someone will build a ramp out of plywood and a few old tires. Timeless memories. More than enough to make up for any cranky employee’s forgotten thank you. Of course, not everyone forgets to express their gratitude. As editor of this publication, I am in a unique position to hear the unvarnished truth from many in our community. I also have the privilege to hear from many grateful readers each and every month. Now, it may not seem PC to name names, and I certainly don’t want to leave anyone else out or make anyone feel forgotten. But, after four years of doing this, I have learned that there are a handful of people who will never take the coverage they get in these pages for granted. Whether it’s on the front page or buried in the Bulletin, we always get a thank you. Always. So, at the risk of offending some folks … but without any intentionof doing so … I am going to name some names. Just some. Jim Butner heads up Non Denominational Christian Worship Services, a local group that goes to various locations in the area and hosts praise and prayer services. Jim and his team are ministers in the best possible definition of the word, and he is always the first to say thank you when his ministry receives press coverage. Chris O’Harahandles publicity for the Women’s Chorus of Sun City Center. Whether we are doing a promo or a recap story, Chris never fails to say “thank you.” She is a credit to our community and a wonderful ambassador for our talented local songbirds. Frank Kepley does such an incredible job with the monthly recap of various military association functions that I think of him as our unofficial Military Liaison. Beyond his tireless efforts for MOWW, MOAA and MFST (among others), Frank never fails to express his gratitude, even when he is the one doing

Life... From first cry...to...last breath soft, unsteady baby steps... turn to...thunderous, deliberate assaults against time. Days quickly gather to form decades; Yesterdays suddenly meld as by-gone years. Ease is dammed behind walls of dis-ease. Every day stress morphs overhead as dark clouds of dis-stress. But an ever-present, soothing calm continues to dance on the air; The challenged are consumed by and sway gently to its rhythm. From beginning to unfinished end, a recognizable, stark, white thread stands out amongst the less vibrant many in a matted, knotted, busy tapestry. Staring into the diverse faces of the challenger, a readily accessible, incomprehensible feeling settles the soul again and again and again. Its moniker and origin, no longer a mystery

Peace....

most (if not all) of the work. Barry Dyer is another military man who practices the art of appreciation. Not only does Barry take the time to email us back when we print a story about the Silver Ospreys, he always takes a moment to stop and say “thanks” when he sees me coming through the front gate. These four folks are FAR from the only appreciative correspondents we enjoy at News of Kings Point.

Where most publications have to sift through stacks of angry “letters” to the editor, we are spoiled with loads of folks who know the value of simple gratitude. Just one more reason why working on your community newspaper is more than a job. It’s a joy. Thanks for reading. Thanks for sending in those submissions. Keep them coming. The folk in White had their annual Christmas Party and it turned out to be a room full of colors, mostly red, green & black with lots of sparkles and Santa Hats. John Robek, VP, thanked the 2013 Board of Directors and introduced the new Board, who were then inducted into service – President, Pam LeCren; First Vice President, Sam Giliberto; Second Vice President, Frank Crowley; Secretary, Lorraine Brown; Treasurer, Karen Crippen; Greens Keeper, Joe White; At Large Board Members Gretchen Johnson, Irene Williams, Carole Robek. John also made mention of all the members who helped him: worked on the green, namely,Joe White & thanked Irene Williams and her team who were responsible for the party itself. A moment of silence was held for members Verla Hirneisen and Rich Brown, who passed away very suddenly this year. The meal choices were Hawaiian Chicken or Beef Tips but the real star of the meal was the thick moist chocolate cake, which added more than a few pounds to those who indulged. After-wards all the attention was on Santa Claus (Joe White) who distributed the gifts. Many different bottles of wine (last year’s favorite gift) were on hand, along with boxes of chocolates, which brought smiles to Ron Doncouse’s face. A weather forecaster wall hanging seemed to be the gift, which was passed from hand to hand, ending up with Sam Giliberto. The festive, fun evening ended on a romantic note with members Carol Hall & Paul Hannesson announcing their engagement.

Retired Minister to Publish First Book

NOKP Book Review Kings Point resident and retired Methodist minister, Rev. Betty Beach Connell, recently submitted her first book, “Embracing the Call,” to her publisher in anticipation of a release around Easter 2014. Rev. Betty says “Embracing the Call” is the true story of what can happen when an imperfect woman discovers a perfectly gracious God. “I was in active ministry for twenty-eight years. But, before that, I spent thirty-seven years trying to make it on my own, taking my lumps and learning from my mistakes. And not always learning the first time.” Connell said. “Embracing the Call” certainly pulls no punches. It is the unvarnished truth confessed by a dear friend, a tale of human limitations and God’s limitless grace. Betty is relatable because she is so real, admittedly flawed but dedicated to pursuing God’s call on her life above all else. “It wasn’t anything I did that transformed my life. It was God’s love that gave me peace, grace and purpose.” Connell said. Betty’s story begins on an idyllic farm in rural New York, then traces her journey through painful teen years and a young love that nearly destroyed her. It is a coming of age story that many women can relate to. Betty’s tale is also about a life split in two by a day of reckoning that changed one woman’s path in life and created a legacy that has touched three generations. And it is a shining example of what can happen when you stop guessing, say “yes” to God and discover your own divine Call. From farm girl in a frilly dress,

Rev. Betty Beach Connell

to an abused young woman lost in love, to a single mother struggling to survive, Betty’s life before ministry is every bit as compelling as her pioneering struggle as a woman called by God to embrace a role church tradition, doctrine, family and friends would have denied her. Betty persevered, she listened to God’s voice and found in her calling a life of joy and fulfillment unlike any she could have ever expected. There were still hurdles, challenges and life-or-death struggles, but she would never again have to face them alone. Rev. Connell’s message is simple, poignant and powerful. “Young or old, there are no limits. Because God has no limits. Take that first step, and watch Him amaze you. It is my hope that ‘Embracing the Call’ will encourage you to do just that.” To learn more about Rev. Betty Beach Connell and her book, “Embracing the Call,” find her online at www. Our January exhibition at the Chamber of Commerce features Matt Batt. The exhibit is a collection of images that have been entered into our club competitions for the last four years. Many of the photos make use of High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques to capture a greater range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard photographic methods. This leads to some interesting and striking effects. Matt has been the club treasurer for the last four years and is the Vice-President this year. He says that digital photography was not on his radar as an activity when he retired to Sun City Center, but the challenge and fun of the club competitions got him “hooked.” You will be amazed at the striking images presented. Come to the opening of this display at the SCC Chamber of Commerce between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on January 16th to meet Matt and enjoy wine and cheese. His works will be on display through February 13th. For more information on the SCC Photo Club and its activities, please see our website at www.photoclubscc.com or visit the photo learning lab at 960D Cherry Hills Drive.

Weight Loss Surgery Support Group Forming

Surgery is not some magic pill that automatically transforms a lifelong struggle with weight into an easy and permanent victory. Whether you’ve had gastric bypass, duodenal switch, gastric band, gastric sleeve, or some other type of bariatric surgery, you’ve found the need for support in your daily efforts to make your surgery a long-term success. Your struggles over this holiday season have, no doubt, made that clear to you. Its too easy for others to advise that “all you have to do” is be very careful about what you eat and make sure you exercise. Easier said than done! So, let’s get a group together to help support one another. You don’t have to struggle alone. Let’s form a Weight Loss Surgery Support Group right here in Kings Point. Elsie Green: This is Your Life By Spencer Faircloth Elsie Green was born in Pleasantview, Kentucky on January 28, 1912. She celebrated her 100th birthday two years ago this month. Elsie had to drop out of school after the 7th grade in order to work on the family farm. Living was hard compared to our life today. Just to attend school, she rode in a horse-drawn wagon, forded a river where there was no bridge, ate her bag lunch on the ground and, after school, returned home to perform farm work until sundown. One of her chores was to

maintain the family garden and spread the manure to fertilize the plants. At the age of eleven she took a job in a shirt factory sewing buttons on shirts. Elsie said she remembers being so tired that she went to sleep on the bathroom floor. Elsie ran away from home and eloped when she was thirteen years old. When her mother found out she came after her and took her back home. She had her first and only child, Anna Jewel, when she was sixteen. Later in life, Elsie adopted a daughter, Joyce Anderson,

Page 23

who is now her only living family member. Later, while living in Pigeon Forge in East Tennessee, she married Dolly Parton’s father. She has met Dolly several times. Two memorable events in her life were attending the World Series in Cleveland, Ohio, and a trip to Jerusalem, which included a tour of the Mid-East. Elsie remembers visiting the Cairo museum and riding a camel to visit the Pyramids. While living in Knoxville, near the University of Tennessee, her husband became sick and, in order to support her family, she

bought two houses and turned them into boarding houses. Later, Elsie moved to the Wimauma area to a house without indoor plumbing and took her baths in Lake Wimauma. Elsie proudly acknowledges being raised in a Christian Baptist home and being saved at the age of sixteen. One of the things she enjoys about Sun City Center is the Nearly New Shop. She also enjoys her life in Sun Towers. Elsie said her life has been hard, but she stays upbeat and enjoys her many friends and all the activities available in Sun Towers.

Woman’s Club Fashion Show and Luncheon a Success

The GFWC SCC Woman’s Club’s Foxy Fashions show and luncheon held this past Saturday, November 23rd, at Community Hall was a huge success. The hall was filled with ladies trying and buying the gorgeous clothing, jewelry and accessories brought to Sun City Center by Janet Carr, Accessories and More of Sarasota. Ladies were welcomed into the show with their choice of a mimosa, with or without alcohol, followed by a delicious catered lunch by Banquet Masters. After lunch, 8 models, all members of the woman’s club, modeled three separate outfits each. Janet Carr provided the narrative, describing the clothes and accessories in detail as the models paraded across the stage and wound their way through the audience. Many had to pause several times as the ladies wanted a closer look and to touch and feel the fabrics. Drawings for several nice door prizes and gift baskets were held throughout the afternoon adding to the excitement of the event. Many ladies left the show carrying their purchases and looking forward to our next event.

Beth Israel Sisterhood Program Announcement

Those children who attend The Hope Fund’s afterschool programs at Bethune Park in Wimauma were treated to their annual holiday parties on Wednesday, December 11th at the Park. The children again received much-appreciated gifts from the women of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Sun City Center along with goodies from their respective tutors, mentors, and readers. Refreshments were served and games were played. Santa (John Cheeseman) arrived right on schedule, much to the delight of the children. A wonderful time was had by all. The Hope Fund, an all-volunteer organization, conducts the afterschool programs at Bethune Park for at-risk children who come there while their parents work. The kids enjoy a safe, nurturing environment while at the Park. Tutors help them with their homework. Mentors help them resolve problems. Readers help them improve reading skills. There are also those who conduct a running program. Sex and drug education classes are held for older children. There are two artists who work with the children on creative activities. The kids work with clay, paint, and many materials to create imaginative projects. New this year, volunteers have stepped forward to teach the youngsters how to play chess and how to do woodworking. All these things expand their world and contribute to a good start in life for children who might otherwise be home alone after school. Financial help is provided by The Hope Fund for those families who cannot afford the full cost of attending the after-school programs. Funds are raised by tax-deductible donations, grants, and a semiannual fundraiser called Breakfast and Bingo. The next B&B will be held in April, 2014. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation; if you would like to volunteer one hour a week to work with children; if you want to share a special talent with the kids, or, if you want to find out more about The Hope Fund, call Carla Miles at 634-4268, or check out www.the-hope-fund.org.

A beautiful tradition known as the “Giving Tree” was begun by the Saint Anne Parish Council in the year 2001. In the first year, approximately 300 gifts were donated for children who may not otherwise have had the child’s joy of gifts on Christmas morning. That number has grown to 730 recipients in this, its 13th consecutive year. It takes many volunteers to make this project a reality. The sign-up process begins early in November, primarily through the Saint Anne Food Pantry, although other outreach ministries also submit names for inclusion. The generic information for each recipient is printed on a label, which is pasted into a card and hung on the tree. This year, all 730 cards were claimed by parishioners on the first weekend that they were displayed. Once the wrapped presents are placed under the tree, other volunteers help to organize the gifts for distribution. Through the generosity of many parishioners, more than 7,000 needy children have been provided for over the life of the program. This is just one of many outreach ministries sponsored by Saint Anne Catholic Church in Ruskin. Anyone interested in more information is welcome to visit the parish website at www.SaintAnneRuskin.org.

UMC Supports The Salvation Army

The United Methodist Church of Sun City Center supports “Doing The Most Good,” the Salvation Army’s promise to the community and to all who are served by this organization. As the December Mission of The Month, members of the Congregation filled 400+ stockings and committed to “ring the bell” at Publix in memory of Sala Halm’s dedicated support of this mission. One of the Salvation Army drivers commented, “I believe this is the most stockings I have ever picked up at a church.”

MOWW Features HCSO Deputy Lorraine Jordan By B. Frank Kepley, CAPT, USN, (Ret)

At the SCC Freedom Plaza Club on Upper Creek Road in Sun City Center. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy Lorraine Jordan, Community Outreach Division, presented an introduction to and an overview of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) “CITIZEN’s ACADEMY.” The concept of the Citizen Police Academy began in England many years ago. The HCSO has enhanced this concept by introducing their own version, the Volunteer Citizen Patrol Program (VCPP), to further advance their commitment to Community Policing. The ACADEMY is held in the community, so individuals from all walks of life can take advantage of this unique and exciting program. Some of the functions of the VCPP are to patrol neighborhoods; assist with school crossings; assist disabled motorists; assist with traffic direction; monitor suspicious school activity; and assist with road obstructions. Deputy Jordan has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 25 years. She has been running the VCPP for 6 years. She was accompanied by Mr. Ed Roloson, a VCPP who is a team leader for the Apollo Beach group.

Captain Frank W. Naylor, III, USN will be the Friday, January 10 speaker for Silver Osprey Squadron members and guests. Captain Naylor is Executive Director of the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division, in Orlando. Captain Naylor is a graduate of George Mason University, and later a graduate of the National War College with a Master’s in National Security Strategies. His early operational assignments were with Patrol Squadron 23, and the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). Later, he led Patrol Squadron 5 as Commanding Officer, when in 2010, it was selected as the Fleet’s top Undersea Warfare aviation Squadron. Some of the advances in aviation training Captain Naylor will talk about include the major strides made in flight simulators. One such simulator was discussed in the November 8 Osprey meeting. It is so realistic, that pilots passing their check ride in the simulator can fly solo on their first F-35 flight. (No two seat F-35 Joint Strike Fighters are being built). You do not have to be former military to attend or become a member. All that is required is an interest in military aviation. For further information please e-mail silverosprey@yahoo.com, or go to suncitycenter.org, select “Activities,” then “Veterans.” For information on the luncheon, which will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Plaza Club, 3932 Upper Creek Drive, Sun City Center, please call Tom Harding by phone 813-634-1236 or e-mail tharcons@aol.com.

Fall Prevention program

Be sure to mark Jan 5, 2014 as a date to remember, because on that Sunday Beth Israel Temple is offering a “fall prevention” program, open to members, friends, and the entire SCC community. Every senior knows that “falling” is one preventable accident, whether it’s at home or taking a walk, or getting into or out of the car. We just have to remember to do certain things. And a fall can be the beginning of the end for any of us. So, on Jan 5 at 2 PM Robin Watt of the SCC Emergency Squad will present a program on “Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle”. It’s free, and will be held in the Henry Gibson Social Hall at Beth Israel Temple, 2014 E. Del Webb Blvd. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. Please come and invite your neighbors and friends; we look forward to seeing you there. L to R: Kyle Privette (U of Miami), Marian Giblin (IFC), Neva Exum (HCC), Jane Trefren (IFC Scholarship Chair), Erika Calderon, (USF).

Over 30 college students who are recipients of scholarships granted by the Interfaith Council of Sun City Center attended a holiday luncheon with members of the IFC and volunteers from the Nearly New Shop. The students, all graduates of either East Bay High School or Lennard High School. Hosted by United Community Church, this is an annual event where the students take time to tell about their studies and their future plans. Graduating seniors at the two high schools who are interested in the scholarship program should talk to the guidance directors at their respective schools. Three East Bay High School graduates who are attending college with the help of scholarships from the Interfaith Council of Sun City Center addressed the Council at a meeting held at Redeemer Lutheran Church. IFC awards scholarships to qualified graduating seniors at East Bay HS and Lennard HS. Interested parties should contact the guidance directors at the schools.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

by Steve Becker A VERY SOPHISTICATED PLAY

NOW ZEE HERE

It is said that there’s no such thing as inventing a new play in bridge. And, taking into account the billions of hands that have been played through the years, this is largely true. Even so, every once in a while someone seems to come up with something that has not been seen before. Consider this deal where West leads a heart against three notrump. Declarer ducks East’s jack of hearts and wins East’s king continuation with the ace.

Solutions on Page 31

South now leads a diamond, and it does not matter how EastWest elect to defend. The best they can do is to score two heart tricks and the A-K of diamonds to hold declarer to nine tricks. This scenario seems altogether normal, and it appears that South must make the contract, come what may. However, three notrump can be defeated if East does something very unusual. All he has to do is to play the eight of hearts instead of the jack at trick one! This might look very peculiar, but it has a dramatic effect on the outcome, since South can no longer make the contract. Declarer is forced to win the eight of hearts with the ten. Whenever he leads a diamond, West wins with the king and returns a heart. South can take the ace of hearts whenever he pleases, but he cannot score more than eight tricks. East’s play of the eight of hearts is not, strictly speaking, a brand-new play in bridge, since there are variations of it that arise under many different circumstances. But it is the right thing to do here, because East’s only real chance of stopping the contract is to find his partner with the king of diamonds. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver • It was beloved American pianist and comedian Jimmy Durante who made the following sage observation: “Be nice to people on your way up because you meet them on your way down.” • Famed markswoman and exhibition shooter Annie Oakley was born the daughter of Quakers, who gave her the name Phoebe Ann Moses. • It was in July 1911 when daredevil Bobby Leach became the second person (and the first man) to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. His daring came at a cost, though; he spent six months in a hospital, recovering from injuries due to his feat. He later went on publicity tours, recounting his experience and posing with the barrel that took him over the falls. He was on one such tour in New Zealand in 1926 when he slipped on an orange peel, injuring his leg slightly. The leg became infected, necessitating an amputation -- which still didn’t save him. He died two months later, the daredevil felled by a citrus rind. • Those who study such things say that fully 10 percent of the country’s total income is due to organized crime. • You might be surprised to learn that only two out of every 10 ears of corn grown in the United States actually ends up being eaten by people. The other eight are destined to feed animals and to be made into ethanol gasoline. • If you’re like more than half of all Americans, you’d be willing to live in a haunted house -- provided you didn’t have to pay rent. • There are those who say that actor Johnny Depp is afraid of clowns. •••••••••••••••••• Thought for the Day: “This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.” -- Will Rogers © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be busier than you had expected right now. But between the socializing rounds and the workplace tasks, there are opportunities for special moments with that certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creative approach leads to a quicker-than-expected solution to a workplace problem. Now you can devote more time to that proposal you hope to introduce by midmonth. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Technological glitches create problems early on. But by midweek, all runs smoothly once again, and you’re well and truly on your way to meeting all your deadlines. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your energy levels are high, and you feel you can handle everything that comes along. But try to take a break from your hectic pace for some quiet time with someone close to you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Before you pounce on that shiny new opportunity, take more time to check it out to see how much substance actually lies beneath all that glitter. A family member has important news. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A personal situation you thought was resolved resurfaces, thanks to a possibly well-intentioned move that went awry. Deal with it as soon as possible. Accept the help of a trusted friend. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to October 22) That goal you set way back when is finally in sight. Maintain your focus on achieving it, and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant demands for your attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to Nov. 21) A temperamental flare-up creates negative feelings that need to be dealt with immediately. But things once again go well after the apologies are made and hurt feelings are soothed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) An early impulsive act causes confusion. But all is smoothed over once explanations are made. Expect a friend or family member to ask for your kind and always wise advice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan.19) You might have to do some juggling of your priorities, as a personal matter appears to require more time and attention. Put your pride aside and accept help from those who offer it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Your creative aspect is strong. Not only does it help you accomplish your goals, but it also inspires others. This could lead to a potentially rewarding collaboration opportunity. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Be careful about making major decisions when you’re not really committed to them. And resist any pressure to do otherwise.
