More than an Ambulance: Emergency Squad’s Cooks
By Kai Rambow The Emergency Squad operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. One of the behind-the-scenes roles is the cooks. They ensure squad members get a hearty meal during their long shifts. Only Here 17 Months One of the newest volunteers is Joe Kushnerick. Joe’s wife, Barbara has volunteered all of her life, and with her work experience in the medical field naturally gravitated to the Emergency Squad. She nudged Joe to become involved. Both cannot stand for long periods of time. Despite this challenge they found a way to volunteer, with Barbara dispatching and Joe cooking for his team every eight days. All cooks get a break one week a month when meals are covered by area associations, such as Sun Towers. Cooking for 40 People The Squad has a kitchen however Joe prefers to cook at home because “I know where everything is.” The cooking usually takes three to four hours and by 11 a.m. he is taking the meal over to the Squad. It’s one major meal for two

shifts for up to 40 people, and the cooks are also preparing on a tight budget. Neither seems to present a challenge for Joe. He explained, “The main dishes are simple; the side dishes are a challenge. Baked beans would not go well with lasagna.”
Joe usually eats the meal with the first shift. “The look on their faces is the best reward.” He does seek feedback because, “You want to give people what they like.” The other extreme can be a problem as well. On one occasion, the first shift loved

Entertaining in Support of the Troops
The Editor’s Corner
Why Start Now?
By E. Adam Porter Editor in Chief, News of Kings Point January seems like a weird time to celebrate the New Year. It comes on the heels of the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. And it comes on the tail end of what is, for most of us, the Season of Perpetual Bacchanal, a festive – and exhausting – time of fun, frivolity and food, food, food. We are partied out, stuffed to the gills and won’t touch a scale with a ten-foot pole. But, a week later, we are celebrating again. Staring into the heavens at blooming sky flowers, popping champagne corks, dancing the night away and huddling close to watch the ball drop. We are celebrating new beginnings. But why? In January, much of the country is still covered in ice and snow. Spring is still months away. Nothing green is growing much of anywhere… even here in the Sunshine State. Just trying to keep your lawn happy this time of year is a challenge. Look around, and things sure don’t feel very new. So what gives? It’s certainly not how “we” used to do it. The earliest New Year’s celebrations in recorded history come from Mesopotamia, somewhere around 2000 B.C.E. In those days the New Year began right around the vernal equinox, better known as the beginning of spring. Not surprising, really. Plants were flowering, and all the wild creatures were positively twitterpated. Other ancient cultures, such as the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Persians, marked the New Year at the autumnal equinox. The Greeks and Romans, partied in December. But, by the Middle Ages, most governments had drifted back to that date sometime in March. Our cultural celebration of New Year’s Day hearkens back to the ancient Roman feast of Janus. He was the god of doorways and beginnings, and the god from which we get the month “January.” Janus was an interesting guy. He had two faces, not because he was dishonest, but because he was perpetually looking both forward and backward,
toward the past and the future simultaneously. Janus was a picture of perpetual hope and perpetual memory, not a bad way to look at the New Year. And, really, starting again here and now does make some sense. The days are getting longer and we can all look forward to spring time and the type of weather people in Florida put on post cards. But that’s not why we pop the cork on 2015 in January. We can thank Pope Gregory for that. The Church didn’t like all the drift and flow of tying the calendar to Easter, which, then as now, changes year to year. They decided on a calendar more in line with the seasons, tweaked the Julian calendar … and by tweaked I mean studied and petitioned and argued and presented and reworked and amended, ad nauseum, for roughly twenty years … before Pope Gregory signed off on the calendar that bears his name in 1582. At that point, while the legal New Year still began in March, a lot of folks ignored that date, because they had been celebrating the New Year in January for generations. In fact, most states officially recognized January 1 as the beginning of the New Year decades before they bought into the Pope’s new calendar. They cared about their cultural customs much more than they did the politics of the day. Sounds like some things haven’t changed all that much. Like those folks, we celebrate the New Year in January simply because “we” decided to. It’s an important lesson. Regardless of what Those In Charge are doing, in spite of all their squabbles and debates and Important Arguments, we’re still pretty much responsible for us. We only get “new” when we decide to go out and get it. That never changes, so, if you want 2015 to be “better” than 2014, you have some work to plan and some plans to accomplish. Sure, there will be the usual Stuff That Happens To Mess Up Your Plans, but that’s going to happen regardless. And the world will keep turning in spite of our efforts to slow it down. Might as well enjoy the ride.

At the recent variety show held in Support of the Troops, among the many song and dance routines that were enjoyed by the audience at the Community Hall on South Pebble Beach Drive were the Hula Honeys. They performed an authentic warrior stick dance - an unusual type of hula and one that requires perfect timing on the part of the dancers. The Hula Honeys are available to perform at an event and their instructor, Darlene Walters, can be contacted at 813-633-6839.

Laughter Really Is The Best Medicine!
Submitted by: Rosie Korfant JSA Medical Group Activities Coordinator How many times have we heard the cliché “laughter is the best medicine?” Well, it’s true, at least according to researcher, Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland and author of Laughter: A Scientific Investigation. While comprehensive studies haven’t been conducted analyzing the health benefits and laughter; one thing’s for sure, laughter changes us physiologically. Muscles in our entire body stretch and we start breathing faster which then raises our oxygen levels. Mmmmm our cells feel refreshed! And all that from laughter? Wait there’s more good news: laughter seems to burn calories too! Maciej Buchowski, researcher from Vanderbilt University, found that ten to fifteen minutes of laughter burned 50 calories! Yay, bring on those guffaws! However, Vanderbilt does NOT recommend us getting rid of our treadmills since one piece of chocolate equals about 50 calories! So, you can see the equation here: one piece of chocolate for ten-fifteen minutes of laughter—we’d be laughing for about 12 hours to lose one pound! Hmmmm. I consider myself a very optimistic and positive sort of person. Usually I can have folks laughing in a matter of minutes with some wacky anecdote. But, there are true “laughter therapists” in our world! Paul Antokolsky and wife, Leslie Ahern are a pair of Certified Laugh Leaders. Interviewed by NBC News in Boston, the “Laugh Leaders” say when you get oxygen into all the cells of your body, (i.e. with laughter) your body gets more energized. You actually change your brain chemistry making you feel better. Interestingly, the results are the same whether it’s a contrived laughter or whether something just happens to “tickle your funny bone.”
Laughing as therapy was introduced by Dr, Madan Kataria, an Indian physician, who wanted his patients to have a healthier lifestyle. He began combining laughing with some of the Yoga masters’ techniques. One classic pose, known as the “Lion,” actually makes you laugh whether you want to or not. Go ahead, try it! Clench your hands tightly and screw up your face into a menacing lion pose, and after holding your breath a second or two, explode with laughter and a big “HAH!” Do it repetitively, and you will start laughing automatically. Laughter Clubs have sprung up around the country, with the “laughter wave” introduced as a fun way for seniors to remember their childhood. Children laugh over 200 times a day while adults only laugh about 15. The “laughter wave” asks that you flail your arms upward and release a laugh to begin a riotous chain of belly laughs. All you really need for a good laugh is air—as in breathing! Just breathe from the diaphragm and not the chest as if you were taking vocal lessons. Go ahead, try it—again! Put one hand on your tummy and one hand on your chest. Take a deep breath; make sure you feel your tummy is raising not your chest. Then exhale with ha-ha-ha, softly at first. Then take larger breaths and noisier ha-ha-ha’s, and you’ve got the making of one of the most economical stress relievers ever! Hearty laughter reduces the levels of stress hormones and increases endorphins, the “feelgood” hormones. In a study by Miller M. Fry, W.F. Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, University of Maryland Medical Center, it was shown that the use of “LOLing,” may have the same positive effect as exercise. So, one and all (LOL) laugh out loud! Sources: Michael W. Smith, MD and R. Morgan Griffin, WebMD Robert R. Jan Ring maker of the quilt, Ed Watson recipient and Sandy Nunn KP Quilters President.
Strange Twists Turn Into Something Beautiful
By Jane Scully Quilters seem to do some strange things. They go to a store to purchase just the right fabric. The color selection is not all that needs to be perfect. So does the thread, needle, batting, backing, binding and sometimes even the ruler needs to be of a certain kind. Weeks go by before all the necessary parts have been located. The big day finally arrives when it is time to start making that special quilt. What is the first thing the quilt maker does? She takes her ruler, places it just so on that beautiful fabric she spent countless hours searching for and cuts the whole thing into pieces. Sounds a little weird? Next she rearranges all the pieces and would you believe it, she sews the fabric all back together again. Well, the quilter has the last laugh because after all this strange behavior she ends up with a beautiful, one of a kind masterpiece. The quilt shown in the picture was made with many different fabrics, all cut using a special ruler called The Twister. Things can get very twisted up cutting and assembling this quilt, but after all the hard work this quilt had a very happy ending. Jan Ring, a member of the Kings Point Quilters and the Front Porch Pickers made this quilt and nominated a very special veteran, Edward R. Watson to receive it. Ed served in WW II between 1942 and 1946 in the US Army Air Corp mechanics division, 7th Air Force Headquarters Squadron and at one point during his enlistment was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. He worked on B17’s one of which was the first plane to complete 25 bombing missions in Europe (The Memphis Belle). Serving in Hawaii and two other islands, Ed finally ended up in Okinawa and was assigned to General White’s B17. Back in the states Ed was assigned to B 25’s, his favorite aircraft. In 2013 Ed had the privilege to take the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Ed is also a member of the Front Porch Pickers. If you have the opportunity to attend one of their performances thank him for his service to our wonderful country. The Kings Point Quilters would like to thank the German American Club and the COA for supporting their ongoing veterans quilt project thru their generous donations. Information about the Kings Point Quilters can be obtained by calling Sandy Nunn club President 813642-8961. The quilters meet Mondays in the Craft Room of the Kings Point Clubhouse. Stop by anytime to see them at work.

Packed House Learn About Human Trafficking
John Armstrong, Men’s Club VP Membership At the December 19, 2014, Men’s Club of Sun City Center meeting over 230 members and guests listened to a highly motivated FBI Special Agent Gregory Christopher and Cpl. Michael Victor of the Tampa PD talk about human trafficking. Thousands of young girls fall victim to this trap every day and usually become prostitutes for an unscrupulous pimp, who takes all the money and has very little concern for the girl’s well being. Many of these young girls run away from their homes and fall in with the wrong people. Both genders can become lost in this horrible existence with little hope of ever escaping back to a normal life. There is a group of concerned citizens in the South Shore area called The South Shore Campaign for Human Trafficking. In Sun City Center, Cam McGary heads up the Awareness Division, which covers the greater Sun City Center Area, Ruskin and Wimauma and their goal is to make the residents of the area aware of Human Trafficking. Presently the organization is looking for a home to house the rescued girls as they make up the larger group in this area. If you want more information call Cam McGary at 813.642.9800. The next Men’s Club general meeting will be January 21, 2015. Look for the Club email with the Newsletter and information on how and when to make a reservation.

DAR Fashion Show
Submitted by Uta Kuhn The GFWC Woman’s Club of Sun City Center held their annual Holiday Luncheon at the Renaissance Club on Tuesday, December 16th. There were 90 members and guests in attendance. The first thing on the agenda was a wonderful variety of holiday songs, which were sung by the Men’s Chorus of Sun City Center. They were great! Prior to lunch many of the ladies ordered cocktails and spent the time socializing. One of the most outstanding things which took place at this party, is the outpouring of love for a special event called the “Angel Project,” which is a program sponsored by the Hope Fund. Prior to the holiday party, members of the Club had the opportunity of picking a special angel for whom they could buy a Christmas Gift. Members were able to choose a boy or girl “angel” and buy them much needed clothing (no toys). The children for whom gifts could be purchased ranged in age from 5 to 12. Those who purchased gifts knew the name of the “angel” their age, and the size of clothing they needed. All this information was on a special paper, which was actually a colored “cutout” of an angel. Thanks to the generosity of the Club’s members, 110 angels received a gift of much needed clothing this Christmas. If you would like more information about the Womans Club, please contact President Jean Smith at 813-634-2576.

Food Pantry Receives $10,000 Grant
The Interfaith Council (Nearly New Shop), which has been supporting Our Lady’s Pantry, Wimauma, for years, has once again provided the 501(c)(3) non-profit with a generous check for their work — this time for $10,000! Tom Bullaro and his wife Anita, co-directors of the Pantry, gratefully accepted the check from Elaine Gibbs and Connie Nichols. “The Interfaith Council has long been one of our major supporters, backing us 100 percent,” says Bullaro. “In fact their donation, back in 2010, made it possible for us to purchase a truck for Our Lady’s Pantry. The truck triples the amount of food we are able to purchase from Feeding America, in Tampa, then haul back to stock our shelves.” Our Lady’s Pantry is associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Migrant Mission. It makes its home in a classroom on the mission campus. And while the classroom has served them well for many years, the Pantry now needs more space for food and freezers, due to the increase in the number of people coming for help. This time last year, about 150 families came for groceries each week. That number is inching up steadily. In recent weeks about 200 families have been coming for food. The expanded Pantry will cost an estimated $150,000. Construction on a new building is penciled in to begin sometime in 2015, when they have raised the money to proceed. For now, Bullaro is thankful for the grant for $10,000, which will buy much food for our neighbors in need. Elaine Gibbs, treasurer of the Interfaith Council, says nine ministries affiliated with the Council work together to choose who receives grants. Choosing Our Lady’s Pantry was easy, she says. “We know the need.” If you wish to help further with food, kindly make a check out to Our Lady’s Pantry — Food, and send it c/o Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Migrant Mission, 16650 U.S. Highway 301 South, Wimauma, Fl. 33598. If you wish to contribute to the new Pantry building, please make out your check to Our Lady’s Pantry – Building Expansion, and mail it to the above address.
The Children/Youth Ministries of the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center are recent recipients of a $10,000 grant from the Impact Fund of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. It is the intent of the grant that children learn lessons in healthy nutrition that will last a lifetime. Trinity Baptist Welcomes Missionaries
UCC Collects Food for Metropolitan Ministries
Members of UCC collected 250 pounds of fresh produce to be given to Metropolitan Ministries for their Thanksgiving Meals. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, food was brought to church and carried to the altar by members of the congregation, as our gift of thanksgiving. After the morning service, the fresh produce was taken to Metropolitan Ministries.
Trinity Baptist Church in Sun City Center recently welcomed Converge Missionaries Jan and John Baxter. Trinity Baptist has been supporting the Baxter’s in their work since 1988. During the evening service, John brought the members up to date on their mission work and how the mission field strategy has changed in recent years. During a reception after the service, the members had a time of fellowship with the Baxter’s and a chance to ask them questions about their family and mission work. For a number of years, the Baxter’s have served as missionaries to the Philippines and have recently taken on an expanded role in the mission field with Converge Worldwide. They help mission-sending agencies and churches around the world to recruit, train and send tent-making missionaries into the most difficult to reach nations. In addition, John and Jan train pastors and missionaries for the churches of the Philippines by teaching one semester per year at the Cebu Graduate School of Theology in Cebu. In addition to their mission work, Jan teaches English at the college undergraduate and graduate levels. The SCC Softball League finished their fall league the end of November. The playoffs were December 2 with the top four teams. Finishing first with a 7-0 record, were the Reds. Second were the Cardinals with a 6-1 record. Third were the Tigers with a 5-2 record and forth were the Ball Busters with a 4-3 record. The other five teams did not make the playoffs. In the playoff game, the Cardinals beat the Tigers and the Reds beat the Ball Busters. It then came down to the last game of the day with the Reds losing to the Cardinals with a final of 12-10. On December 9 the SCC Softball League had their one pitch tournament. It was a chilly morning with the temperature just reaching 61 degrees. There were 9 teams that played in the fast paced 45-minute games. In the one pitch you need to make a decision to either swing at a
strike or let a ball go by. There were some very close one run games and other games where the team was ahead by ten runs. The last game came down to the Cardinals and the Reds. The score went back and forth until the last inning when the Reds were up by two runs. But, this time the Reds were able to stop the Cardinals from scoring. The final score was 12 to 10. If you would like to play in the next session which starts January 6th, please see our web site at www.suncitycentersoftball.org for more information. If you do not want to play, but would like to watch a game, we play on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 3:00 starting January 6th on Weatherford Dr. The Diamondettes serve hot dogs and hamburgers for a small donation. Come out and enjoy a hot dog and watch a ball game

Novices Show Off Their Skills
Every year the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club holds a tournament for first-year bowlers. Ten new lawn bowlers participated this season 7 men and 3 women - and after the first round of playoffs, only one man - Rich Maxedon - and one woman - Aggie Olsson - were left to compete for the title of Novice Champion. The afternoon of the final game was a lovely warm one and attracted fellow lawn bowlers to watch. In a singles match, there are unlimited ends - the players continue until one of them reaches 21 points. Unfortunately, noone kept count of the ends played but the score was tied at 10, 16, 18 and 19 points before Aggie managed to score the final 2 points she needed to win this coveted title. From these scores, it’s evident that Rich put up a good fight and was a worthy opponent. Aggie is from Sweden and only comes to Florida for a few months at a time, but she’ll surely be bragging back home about her achievement, and rightly so. Congratulations to them In the spirit of sportsmanship both for getting into the final and throughout the world, Aggie and Rich shake hands after especially to Aggie for her win! the game.

Emergency Squad Featured Volunteers
Carol and Randy Anderson moved to Sun City Center in 2005 to be closer to their only daughter Julie, who moved to St. Petersburg in 1999. They knew they made the right decision because they now spend lots of time with their daughter, as well as their two beautiful grandchildren, Reef, age 7, and Rawley, age 6. Carol and Randy were both born in Bloomington, Indiana. Carol retired from the State Farm Corporate offices in Bloomington and Randy retired from the John Warner bank after a 30-year career. Upon arrival in Sun City Center they noticed the “We Need You” signs posted on the ambulance parked around town. The sign “tugged at their heart,” they said, and they intuitively knew they had found another purpose for their lives. They had no idea at the time that they would form such strong friendships with some of the most wonderful and conscientious people on the planet. Another inspiration for them, according to Carol, was living with a purpose and extending God’s love through their service to other seniors during their time of need. “The Squad is just one big family working together to make this one of the top senior communities in the state,” they said. Carol is a coordinator on Team 4 and Randy is now the Captain of Team 4. We are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated, talented, and conscientious couple on the Emergency Squad.

Now available … heart valve repair
without open-heart surgery The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital is among the first hospitals in Florida to offer the highly advanced MitraClip procedure
When the heart’s mitral valve – which controls blood flow through the heart – does not close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation (MR). MR can cause heart failure, with symptoms like shortness of breath and fluid buildup. Now there is a treatment that can reduce symptoms and possibly extend lives – and it’s available at The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Manatee Memorial is among the first hospitals in the United States to make MitraClip available to patients, after meeting rigorous criteria mandated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. Manatee Memorial’s MitraClip team consists of specially trained physicians in echocardiography, interventional cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. An important member of the team is the Valve Coordinator, Erin Crowell, BSN, CCRN, who acts as the hospital/physician liaison for patients and their families throughout the process. Ms. Crowell is present during the MitraClip insertion and follows patients from hospitalization to discharge.

2015, January The News of Kings Point
News of Freedom Plaza Submitted by Peggy Burgess News Correspondent The aroma of Thanksgiving turkey still hung in the air as Freedom Plaza’s first ornament of Christmas 2014 was hung. The tall Atrium tree had gone up in the early morning hours on the Friday after Thanksgiving and by day’s end was fully bedecked with its balls, baubles and beads. That speedy feat was accomplished by decorators from Sun City Center Flowers. The Atrium’s stair railings, freshly festooned with garland, perfectly framed the scene, yet something was missing…the sparkle of Christmas tree lights. During the following days Christmas trees appeared on the four balconies overlooking Atrium, all of them artfully decorated, but none lighted. All were waiting for a special Freedom Plaza event, the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. At the appointed time, the Atrium filled with excited residents and the punch bowls brimming with eggnog, Freedom Plaza’s Executive Director, Kevin Knopf, spoke the long-awaited words: “Let there be light!” Brilliance blazed from trees and garlands as a joyful chorus of “O, Christmas Tree” resounded. Freedom Plaza’s holiday season was officially begun. And what a season it was! It had a spectacular start with an excursion to the Lakeland Center for the thrilling Cirque Dreams Holidaze. A few days later there was yet another excursion, this to Mahaffey Theatre and The Kenny Rogers Holiday Show. Next came A Scrumptious Holiday with Diversity, the Voices of Sarasota, and then The Ditchfields’
Christmas Memories at Sarasota Opera House. The three-day excursion to Ft. Myers, with its train ride and boat trip to view the waterway lighting display, also included an evening at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and A Christmas Carol. “Meanwhile back at the ranch,” at Freedom Plaza, itself, a wealth of holiday happenings was underway. Santa and Mrs. Claus hosted a party for children of Freedom Plaza associates, while the Director’s Holiday Sip & Social furnished residents a festive affair. Christmas music was nearly continuous with visits from The Caroling Sheriffs, a Girl Scout troop, the choir of Trinity Baptist Church and our own Freedom Singers. That group’s “Caroling Around the Tree” program featured a calypso beat and guest guitarist, Eddy Lugo. December ended on a happy note from the Stan Blum Band at our New Year’s Eve dance in the Auditorium. These holiday festivities and, in fact, the whole year of 2014— with its theatrical productions and educational programs; its parties and entertainments; its intriguing excursion and, most of all, its compliment of interesting new residents—will be a hard act to follow. Yet the 2015 calendar is already filling with fascinating attractions. These include concerts and golf tournaments, plus a Caribbean cruise and another to explore The Great Rivers of Europe. The residents and staff of Freedom Plaza send this New Year’s greeting to all their Sun City Center friends: “May you find joy in whatever you do, and good fortune all the year through.”

The Gift of Spring
The day I came, Barren, lifeless trees stood reverently since their surrender to cold, boreal winds. Slow, staccato drops of water solidified quickly into icicles that glisten in the bright, tempered sun. Heavy, solitary flakes of frozen vapor floated effortlessly stifling what had been. Hard, famished earth beneath stirred quietly, readying itself to awaken from its respite. And then one day, Warm, vernal breezes embrace each branch encouraging signs of productive, fruitful life. Blinding, warming sunlight releases a swift, steady aquatic flow. What will be is nourished by gentle, driving showers of liquid love. A black-top road suddenly re-appears, leading to nowhere special; trees once bare soldier it on each side. Tiny flowers emerge from their underground tombs, awakening the earth like a whisper. And on that day, The bleakness of winter surrenders to the promise of spring as it always does; But this time, you are among the flowers. © December 2014 Suzanne S. Austin-Hil

Contract Bridge AN EXCEPTIONAL EXCEPTION
Super Crossword FISHY FOLKS
Winning at bridge is more a question of how many mistakes you make rather than how often you make brilliant bids or plays. Mistakes can be made for any number of reasons, but most often they are due to the tendency of players to follow general rules blindly, instead of reasoning things out for themselves. Consider this deal where West had to decide what to lead after cashing his A-K-Q of clubs. In practice, he led a spade, hoping to find his partner with the king, and South had the rest of the tricks. West should have done better.
Solutions on Page 39
He should have realized that not only was South likely to have the king of spades for his opening bid, but that even if East had the king, there was nothing to be gained by leading a spade at this point. Instead, West should have led the four of clubs! After East ruffed with the ten, West’s jack would have become the setting trick. West should reason that not only is there a possibility that his partner could have the ten of trumps, but that nothing can be lost by leading a club no matter what East’s trump holding is. Thus, if East has, say, the lowest missing trump -- the seven -South will be forced to overruff the seven with the eight in order to win the trick. The spade finesse -- if South needs it to make the contract -- will still have to be attempted. And if East has no trumps at all, then declarer -with seven hearts, the A-K of diamonds and the ace of spades -- has 10 unassailable tricks. It is true that a defender rarely makes a play of the type recommended here because all players have been indoctrinated with the general rule that one does not present declarer with the opportunity for a ruff-anddiscard. But in this situation, it is known that declarer cannot gain a trick by the club lead. It therefore behooves West to put the four of clubs on the table at trick four. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By Samantha Weaver
• It was novelist Mary Ann Evans -- better known by her pen name, George Eliot -who made the following sage observation: “Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact.” • In the five-year span between 1946 and 1951, television ownership in the United States jumped from 10,000 to 12 million. • You probably don’t know the name Clara Peller, but if you were watching TV in the 1980s, you would almost certainly recognize her as the “Where’s the beef?” lady from fastfood chain Wendy’s incredibly successful ad campaign. You might be surprised to learn that Peller wasn’t an actress; she was a manicurist. A commercial producer named Joe Sedelmaier was shooting a different ad when he realized they needed a manicurist on site, so an assistant ran to a local beauty shop and returned with Peller. As soon as she greeted Sedelmaier with a gruff “How ya doin’?”, the producer realized that she had potential. He convinced Wendy’s to create an entire campaign around the octogenarian. The gamble paid off; the restaurant’s sales jumped by 15 percent almost as soon as the ads began to run. • TV’s Gilligan’s island was created in the middle of an artificial lake at CBS Studios in Hollywood. The cost of construction was $75,000. • The next time you’re at a hockey game, be sure to watch out for stray pucks; they travel through the air at speeds of up to 100 mph. • There is a species of ant found in Australia and Tasmania that, in some cases, can kill a human with a single sting. ********************************* Thought for the Day: “I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.” -- Ian L. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept.22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
