Election Results

The verdict on the theater is in, 3 new directors elected

NEWS Staff One of the most contentious and hotly contested issues in recent memory is behind us. The question of when, where and how Sun City Center should build a new theater divided this community, creating a debate that continued to cause contention for much of 2014. Now the community has spoken. Definitively. Voters clarified any potential confusion by a strong statement in the ballot booth. A total of 5,015 votes were cast, with the ballot initiative being defeated

3,874 to 1,141, a more than threeto-one margin. On the question of financing for a new theater, 4,918 votes were cast. Financing was also soundly defeated, 4,037 to 881, a more than four-to-one ratio. Community Association members also voted to see three new faces on the Board of Directors. Elected were Richard Angerosa, Joe Elam and Ed Feder. Two elected directors, Angerosa and Feder, ran primarily on a “fiscal responsibility” ticket, speaking out fervently against a new theater. During their candidate

interviews, each new director also expressed their thoughts about leadership and a new direction for the Community Association. Here, in part, is what they said.

Angerosa - “I believe the current board is dictatorial and unresponsive to the voice of the residents. We need to keep SCC debt free, rebuild trust in the CA board and really listen to the residents. (The Board should) make decisions based on direct resident input, and honor the wishes of those residents.”

Elam - “The board has become so divided they are talking over each other rather than to each other. Having the courage of your convictions is great, but if you are thinking of your retort rather than listening, nothing will change. I will work to make SCC the most attractive community in this area.”

Feder - “Is is important that the Board represent the will of all CA members. I want the Board to exercise sound fiscal management. I would like to establish more comprehensive processes for the evaluation of major projects. Learning what projects should be considered requires active listening.”

NEWS Staff The 2014 Holiday Cart Parade was, once again, a smashing success. Scores of festively decorated carts cruised through Sun City Center, much to the delight of hundreds gathered along the route. Santa and his eclectic collection of holiday elves tossed candy, beads and endless good cheer out to attendees. After all the carts were parked and the awards were announced, everyone gathered to kick off the season with WinterFest. Thanks to Minto, the available prize money was bigger and better than ever. Nearly $6,000 was awarded for creativity and festive impact. Congratulations to all the winners and a big THANK YOU to everyone who participated, proving, once again, that, while we may not have a White Christmas, the holiday spirit is alive and well in Sun City Center!

Pictures and List of Winners on Page 20.

The 2015 Board officers will be as follows: David Floyd, President; Sam Sudman, Vice President; Neil Rothfeld, Treasurer; Joe Elam, Secretary. In addition to these results, the Membership Dues decrease was convincingly approved, 4,215 to 794.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A YEAR IN REVIEW

What an interesting year this has been for Sun City Center as we have actually watched the Long Range Building Plan come to fruition. Power Contracting, General Contractors, signed the official contracts for $2,800,000 in April. Following that signing, ground breaking ceremonies were held, and the first shovels of dirt were turned on April 9. All this activity followed a very successful FunFest celebration, which was a great success and very well attended. On the suncitycenter.org website, aerial photos were posted all throughout the summer and showed the progress being made. The summer rains in June were accompanied by high winds and many Sun City Center homes suffered roof damage, but Power Contracting continued their work and progress was made. The parking lot north of the Atrium and Fitness Center was unavailable all summer. However, a portion of the lot was opened to members months early on November 4, just in time for the National Lawn Bowling Tournament. We also have 28 new trees, new plantings and irrigation areas, and new lighting that all complement our parking areas. This month the four new buildings will be open for use as soon as the Certificate of Occupancy is released by Hillsborough County. We welcome the new Information Center, the expanded Librar y addition, the new Multi-Purpose Building for use by the dance clubs, the Photography Club, and the Mac Club, and last, but not least, the

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER SUN CITY CENTER A special thank you to the Community Foundation for their grants in 2014 benefiting the:

Samaritan building. In addition, the Artisan Coffee and Tea Bar in the Atrium, Café DeLuna, across from the Florida room opened on June 18, and it became an immediate success. Our campus has changed dramatically and has taken on a whole new dimension. We have taken on a new and improved look and have brought new amenities for our members in the process. We have stayed on or ahead of schedule and under budget throughout this building process. DUES In December, the members voted to lower the dues by $5 for 2015; $270 will be the amount of our dues, and all payment of dues will be handled through BB&T Bank. No payment will be accepted in the Community Association office. An envelope is included in your dues statement for your convenience in mailing your payment. Also, it is very easy to pay electronically, saving a stamp and a trip to the bank. FINAL COLUMN The last four years have gone by quickly for me—serving as a Director, Club Liaison, Vice President, and President. A special thank you is given to Lyn Reitz, Carol Donner and the CA Office Staff who worked diligently with me this year—thank you for your unwavering support.

By Phyllis Hodges Ceramics Club If you haven’t been in the Ceramics Club room (located by Pineapple Plaza), you have missed a treat. The club has part of its space dedicated to a “store” where visitors can browse, with proceeds from sales going to charity. Creating ceramic pieces is indeed an art and these members are dedicated. Whether they are making an item for themselves, for gifting or for selling, they are committed to making each piece beautiful. Carol Cook, who just stepped down from the top post, says she has enjoyed her leadership role, but every club needs new blood. Carol came to SCC in 1993 from New York where ceramics was a hobby but on a smaller scale. She takes pride in the fact that the club is flourishing and attributes some of its vibrancy to the new things being done. For example, they hold free classes so that newcomers can see if ceramics is for them. “The classes have been full, with 12 people per class, and most of the people who take them do join the club,” she said. “We also had a membership drive that worked.” Rita Mealey, formerly first vice president, assumed the presidency in 2015. She moved here four years ago from Pennsylvania. In checking out all the activities, she took a close look at the club since she had dabbled in ceramics in the ‘70s. She apparently dived in head first, because she is one of the cadre of about 10 members who claim the club as their home away from home. Rita is excited about her new role but realizes she has big shoes to fill. She takes comfort in the fact that Carol will still be around. “Carol has always been willing to offer a helpful hand

since I joined the club four years ago,” she says. The club now has almost 100 members, although many of those do not participate regularly. As in many art clubs, it’s common for a member to reach a point where they have all the ceramic pieces they can use, as do their friends and family members who have been the happy recipients of ceramic gifts. Each member is responsible for buying paints and the raw form or “green ware” needed for personal use items; for pieces made for the club to sell, club supplies are used. For more information about the club or a three-week class session that starts January 12, call the clubroom at 813642-2040 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What’s New at the Library?

By Elaine Birkinshaw One hundred years ago the Great War began in Europe, changing the world’s political scene and culture forever. Many European countries are holding commemorative services this year and BBC has produced an excellent documentary, Royal Cousins at War, that revisits the conflict between Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and King George V of England. This study of the fall of monarchy as Europe’s prime form of government is now available at the library. Mystery fans will enjoy the Murder, She Wrote series we added this month. The set consists of all twelve seasons starring Primetime Emmy Award nominee Angela Lansbury as amateur sleuth and mystery writer Jessica Fletcher. Each season is packaged as a series so that it can be checked out as one item. Because we now have a larger selection of series on DVD, we are allowing each person to check out two series at a time along with three 7-day DVDs. Many of the television series in our collection started out as donations of a few seasons. Our goal for the next year is to try to fill in the gaps of the series that have been popular so that

they can be complete. We now have the complete set of the popular West Wing series starring Martin Sheen, as well as Columbo and 24. We have all four past seasons of Downton Abbey and will be adding Season 5 in January. Anthony Horowitz was commissioned by the Arthur Conan Doyle estate to create new works of fiction continuing the story after the death of Sherlock Holmes. Following up on the success of his 2011 book The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes novel, Horowitz now gives us Moriarty a new villain who is stepping up to take the place of Holmes’ arch-rival. British actress Judi Dench has written a pictorial memoir of her life and career filled with wonderful photos of and anecdotes from her long and illustrious history in theater. The talented Dame Judith Dench has excelled in everything from Shakespeare to comedy, live theater to the big screen. Behind the Scenes provides a candid look at her personal and professional life. Thank you to all of our patrons and volunteers for your support during 2014. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2015. Happy Reading!

Packed House Learn About Human Trafficking

Submitted by Uta Kuhn The GFWC Woman’s Club of Sun City Center held their annual Holiday Luncheon at the Renaissance Club on Tuesday, December 16th. There were 90 members and guests in attendance. The first thing on the agenda was a wonderful variety of holiday songs, which were sung by the Men’s Chorus of Sun City Center. They were great! Prior to lunch many of the ladies ordered cocktails and spent the time socializing. One of the most outstanding things which took place at this party, is the outpouring of love for a special event called the “Angel Project,” which is a program sponsored by the Hope Fund. Prior to the holiday party, members of the Club had the opportunity of picking a special angel for whom they could buy a Christmas Gift. Members were able to choose a boy or girl “angel” and buy them much needed clothing (no toys). The children for whom gifts could be purchased ranged in age from 5 to 12. Those who purchased gifts knew the name of the “angel” their age, and the size of clothing they needed. All this information was on a special paper, which was actually a colored “cutout” of an angel. Thanks to the generosity of the Club’s members, 110 angels received a gift of much needed clothing this Christmas. If you would like more information about the Womans Club, please contact President Jean Smith at 813-6342576.

L to R:Gary Baker, Men’s Club President; Gregory Christopher, FBI Special Agent; Cpl. Michael Victor, Tampa Police; Cam McGary, South Shore Campaign for Human Trafficking Awareness Division, and Art Smith, Men’s Club VP Programs

John Armstrong, Men’s Club VP Membership At the December 19, 2014, Men’s Club of Sun City Center meeting over 230 members and guests listened to a highly motivated FBI Special Agent Gregory Christopher and Cpl. Michael Victor of the Tampa PD talk about human trafficking. Thousands of young girls fall victim to this trap every day and usually become prostitutes for an unscrupulous pimp, who takes all the money and has very little concern for the girl’s well being. Many of these young girls run away from their homes and fall in with the wrong people. Both genders can become lost in this horrible existence with little hope of ever escaping back to a normal life. Raffle Winner Gets Quilt

Four Sew ‘n Sews quilters opened their homes to other quilters. These ladies were invited to the homes of Gloria Blickenderfer, Marcia Morris, Nan Ryan, and Holly Bartholomew to see their sewing rooms and their quilt collections. Not only did they showcase where they create their quilts, but also provided some tasty bits of food and drink, such as cookies, pastries, blueberry casserole, quiche, sandwiches, coffee, tea, bloody marys and mimosas. Their sewing rooms were in uniquely different places such as the lanai, guest bedroom, master bedroom and even the garage. Their homes were also uniquely decorated from country to Florida chic. The visitors were also surprised by receiving special gifts in the quilting motif. The ladies enjoyed themselves so much that they plan to do this again next year. The Sew ‘n Sews is a Sun City Center club for both quilters and sewers. They gather during the week to share ideas, give lessons and provide fellowship. For information on becoming a member, call Linda at 390-2377 or email the club at scc.sew.n.sew@gmail.com.

Lisa Rhodes Joins CA Staff

Club News New England Club Contributes

SCC New England Club President Richard Young helps Project Chair Lyn Sherburne with the food she collected at the Welcome Home Fall Social. Club members, many of whom are snow birds, enjoyed some “hearty hors d’oeuvres” they had brought to this November event. The club members are charged no dues, but were asked to bring non-perishable food that was then donated to two nearby food pantries.

By Phyllis Hodges A new face is greeting you in the CA Office. Lisa Rhodes, receptionist, joined the team October 1, 2014. Lisa lives in Brandon; she moved there in September when she, her brother and mother decided to relocate from Tennessee to Florida. When Lisa isn’t at work, she is probably gardening or boating on Tampa Bay. She also enjoys crafts; she especially likes to take something old and repurpose it into something useful. Lisa is a Certified Nursing Assistant but decided to follow a different career path in Florida. She likes to help people, so her post inside the front door of the office is certainly one where she can do just that. “When people leave the office or hang up the phone, I want them to feel they have been helped,” she says. She enjoys meeting and talking to people about all the different places they are from and especially likes to help newcomers get oriented. If you haven’t met Lisa, stop in and say hello.

The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam, has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory's acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever. Rated PG for thematic elements, some violence, language and brief sensuality. LAWN BOWLING Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club

Novices Show Off Their Skills Every year the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club holds a tournament for first-year bowlers. Ten new lawn bowlers participated this season - 7 men and 3 women - and after the first round of playoffs, only one man - Rich Maxedon - and one woman Aggie Olsson - were left to compete for the title of Novice Champion. The afternoon of the final game was a lovely warm one and attracted fellow lawn bowlers to watch. In a singles match, there are unlimited ends - the players continue until one of them reaches 21 points. Unfortunately, no-one kept count of the ends played but the score was tied at 10, 16, 18 and 19 points before

In the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the world, Aggie and Rich shake hands after the game.

L to R: Dick, Mike and Kathy.

Aggie managed to score the final 2 points she needed to win this coveted title. From these scores, it’s evident that Rich put up a good fight and was a worthy opponent. Aggie is from Sweden and only comes to Florida for a few months at a time, but she’ll surely be bragging back home about her achievement, and rightly so. Congratulations to them both for getting into the final and especially to Aggie for her win!

The Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club’s Memorial tournament was run over four days in a single knockout format. Fourteen teams began the tournament and the remaining two played off in the final. They were the team of Mike Perkins (Skip), Kathy Gonnella (Vice) and Dick Lane (Lead) taking on Phil Griffin (Skip), Rick Abell (Vice) and Aggie Olsson (Lead). Under threatening skies, which soon cleared and kept the rain away, play was very competitive and the scores close throughout the game. In the end though Mike’s team managed to score 15 points to Phil’s team’s 12 points, thus giving Mike and his team the win. Well done to both teams for making it to the final and to Mike, Kathy and Dick for their title.

Emergency Squad Featured Volunteers

On December 11, Aston Gardens Executive Director Thomas Goshorn stopped by the Emergency Squad and dropped off a donation of $600. “We Carol and Randy Anderson moved to Sun love everything you do for the community and really appreciate the care City Center in 2005 to be closer to their only you crews provide to our residents. Dispatcher training is 16 hours long plus additional time for Carol retired from the State Farm Corporate offices in Bloomington and mentoring before being qualified to dispatch our emergency calls. Graduates Randy retired from the John Warner bank after a 30-year career. Upon arrival in Sun City Center they noticed the “We Need You” signs included: Maryanne Eberle; Marty Mallak, former Chief; Barb Adelman; Linda Conklin, Dispatch Trainer; JoEllen Bromberg; Marcia Lederberg; and posted on the ambulance parked around town. The sign “tugged at their heart,” they said, and they intuitively knew they had found another purpose Karen Crippen, Dispatch Manager. for their lives. They had no idea at the time that they would form such strong friendships with some of the most wonderful and conscientious people on Emergency Squad Maintenance and Sanitation the planet. Another inspiration for them, according to Carol, was living with Crew Keeps the Squad Rolling a purpose and extending God’s love through their service to other seniors during their time of need. “The Squad is just one big family working together to make this one of the top senior communities in the state,” they said. Day in and day out, holidays and everyday, a crew of very special people keep the wheels turning for the Emergency Squad. Our maintenance crew is here each morning to provide routine maintenance for our vans and ambulances. The crew is on call for whenever vehicle problems occur and when an ambulance or van has a mechanical problem that puts it out of service, members of the crew come in to assess the issue, determine the problem and decide the course of action. But vehicle maintenance is just a part of it; this group also assists with maintaining our building and making sure the volunteers are comfortable and safe. Our sanitation crew comes in twice a week to clean and sanitize both vans and ambulances. This is vital to providing a clean environment for both patients and volunteers. The Squad appreciates the service and dedication of this entire group.

SCC Security Patrol Chief Resigns

By Uta Kuhn Bob Powers officially resigned as Sun City Center Security Chief of Patrol on December 18. Powers served in that capacity for 25 months following a stint as a board director. Powers stated his reason for resigning was his desire to be nearer to his family in Ohio. He and his wife Sandy are natives of Ohio, moving to Sun City Center in 2010. “My term as chief has been very rewarding for me and I have enjoyed working with our dedicated volunteers and the SCC community. This was a very difficult decision for me and Sandy. Although it is difficult to leave, my family comes first and I will now begin a new life chapter by being nearer to my sons and watching my grandchildren grow.” During Powers’ final meeting with the team captains, he said there were times the job was difficult, but he felt because he had the support of so many patrol volunteers and staff, it became easier for him as he recognized the deep commitment the volunteers have for the Patrol. Bob was a hard worker and never shied away from lending a helping hand to those who needed one. Patrol Board President Karen Ryan said, “Bob endured numerous thankless hours working side by side with the membership. The Board respected his management and people skills and he was always forthcoming with the Board by bringing new ideas for improving the Patrol. We wish him and Sandy, all the best on their return home to Ohio.” Powers dug deep within the SCC community to gather support for the Patrol and by doing so, garnered the community’s support. “My goal was to serve the SCC community and I hope I accomplished that,” Powers said. “It has been a pleasure to meet so many people and I am truly grateful for the lasting friendships I have gained from Patrol volunteers.” The Patrol’s Board of Directors will immediately select a search committee composed of team captains to put forth a candidate to the Board. The Board will select the new Chief of Patrol per its bylaws. Powers hopes the transition will go smoothly and the Patrol will continue all the good work they are known for. While the search for a new chief is taking place, the Board will be responsible in assisting the overall operation of the Patrol with Ryan handling the day-to-day operations.

Security Patrol Volunteers of the Month

Judith Kramer and Peggy Kotila have been named December’s Volunteers of the Month by the Sun City Center Security Patrol. Kramer has lived in Sun City Center for 13 years, and has volunteered almost that many years for the Security Patrol. “I really felt we wanted to give back to the community for the safety and comfort they give us,” she said. She has driven and dispatched for both Team 17 and Team 19. She prefers dispatching, especially since she no longer drives at night. At one time she was responsible for calling people on Team 17 to confirm their schedules. As far as she’s concerned, volunteering for the Patrol “is a commitment to providing that comfort and safety I mentioned. It’s very satisfying. When you’re not doing it, someone is doing it for you.” Kotila joined the Patrol 15 years ago, starting with Team 8 and now Team 17. She no longer drives, but is happy to dispatch, and “They pick me up and take me home.” She’s lived in Sun City Center since 1989, so as a dispatcher she has a firm grip on the local geography and landmarks when she fields a phone call or notes the location of a Patrol car. “I wanted to volunteer and it’s a nice group of people,” Kotila stated. As for getting along on the Patrol, “Do what you’re supposed to and enjoy it,” she advises. “You have to like people.”

20-Year Security Patrol Service Award

Golf Cart Registration/Inspection

Submitted by Uta Kuhn If you own a golf cart, or maybe two, this will be your chance to have your cart registered and inspected by the Sun City Center Security Patrol. By registering your golf cart, a record of an owner’s name, address, phone number and golf cart make and model will be on file in the event your golf cart or battery is stolen. DAYS/DATES: Thurs. Jan. 8, Fri. Jan. 9, and Sat. Jan 10 TIME: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Place: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 701 Valley Forge Blvd. When you arrive at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Valley Forge Drive, volunteers will ask you to fill out a registration card, which will then be entered into a database kept at the Security Patrol office. The database information will be given to Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Department in the event a stolen golf cart is located. Your golf cart will be affixed with a special sticker, which will indicate that the cart is registered. The registration sticker will have the same number corresponding to the registration card. As part of this endeavor you will also have the golf cart inspected for additional issues, such as tire wear, lights and brake lights working properly. If any of those things are not in proper condition, the volunteers will inform you and suggest you have it checked at a local dealership. It is well worth knowing that your golf cart is secured through a registration system and also gives you the opportunity for a brief maintenance inspection. The Security Patrol encourages all golf cart owners throughout Sun City Center to have their carts registered. For more information, please contact the Patrol Office at 642-2020 and they will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Meet Your Neighbors

By Agnes Baker Meet Peter Bates and Cheryl Levin, a wonderful couple adept in many different arenas. Peter is a documentary photographer, a music critic, and a photography teacher in the local area. Cheryl is also a photographer, a dance enthusiast and a drummer! Peter is from Boston and graduated from Bates College. He was formerly a consultant for high tech companies. His interest in photography grew when he joined the Boston Photographic Research Center in the early eighties and volunteered on the staff of its magazine, Views. With his active and curious mind, Peter became interested in the high dynamic range (HDR) technique of photography. It is a complex process, but worth the final product–highly detailed interpretations of street photography. Bodegas that are full of character are the subjects of his current work-inprogress, The Bodega Project. Cheryl is a semi-retired psychologist, now a junkyard junkie who finds beauty in that arena: she photographs rusted radiators, farm equipment, curious items in disarray, and so on. She also does “straight” photography with great shots from her trips to Ireland and Iceland. A native New Yorker, Cheryl obtained her graduate degrees in New York State. She has been a drummer for many years, and performed with a West African drum group across the East Coast and in Senegal. She continues to play weekly at the Sunset Grill Drum Circle.

More than an Ambulance: Emergency Squad’s Cooks By Kai Rambow The Emergency Squad operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. One of the behind-the-scenes roles is the cooks. They ensure squad members get a hearty meal during their long shifts. Only Here 17 Months One of the newest volunteers is Joe Kushnerick. Joe’s wife, Barbara has volunteered all of her life, and with her work experience in the medical field naturally gravitated to the Emergency Squad. She nudged Joe to become involved. Both cannot stand for long periods of time. Despite this challenge they found a way to volunteer, with Barbara dispatching and Joe cooking for his team every eight days. All cooks get a break one week a month when meals are covered by area associations, such as Sun Towers. Cooking for 40 People The Squad has a kitchen however Joe prefers to cook at home because “I know where everything is.” The cooking usually takes three to four hours and by 11 a.m. he is taking the meal over to the Squad. It’s one major meal for two shifts for up to 40 people, and the cooks are also preparing on a tight budget. Neither seems to present a challenge for Joe. He explained, “The main dishes are simple; the

side dishes are a challenge. Baked beans would not go well with lasagna.” Joe usually eats the meal with the first shift. “The look on their faces is the best reward.” He does seek feedback because, “You want to give people what they like.” The other extreme can be a problem as well. On one occasion, the first shift loved the beef stew and ate all of it leaving nothing for the second shift. Joe has been kind enough to share a recipe his team loves. White Chicken Chili This is 4 to 8 servings. You can freeze the rest. 8 chicken thighs or ground turkey 1 package white chicken chili (McCormick) 1 chicken broth (can make from chicken or buy can) 1 onion diced 1 can of diced tomatoes 1 can of diced tomatoes with jalapenos (Hunt’s or Del Monaco) 1 can of canola beans Cook chicken first, save broth and debone. Mix all ingredients together and put in crockpot. Cook for two hours on high, continue on medium for another two hours. Note: tastes even better if prepared the night before. Great to serve with a salad and any type of crusty bread.

From Traditional German Music to Songs of the Wild West

By Ilona Merritt In the field of music, Germany claims some of the most renowned composers, producers and performers of the world. Germany is the largest music market in Europe, and third largest in the world. German classical music is one of the most performed venues in the world; German composers include some of the most accomplished and popular in history. Martin Luther and the Reformation made a great change in the German music. Luther felt music was one of God’s greatest gifts and made it a cornerstone of his movement. Since music is an important element to the German people, it was only natural that once the German-American Club of SCC was formed in September 1999, a choral group would soon follow. In December 1999 Judy Quitsch, charter member, helped a small choral group get organized and they performed at the Christmas Party that year. Judy Quitsch is the driving force behind this successful group. She contacted friends in Rochester, New York to get some choral music, located a pianist and a conductor and the German-American Club Singers were on their way to entertain the community. Over the past 15 years Judy has been able to arrange for new directors and pianists as necessary. Undaunted by these challenges she managed to keep the group together and growing. They perform for organizations and nursing homes in and outside the community. Over the years they have had joint concerts with the Fiddlers and the Southshore Concert band. Encouraged by friends she convinced the group to do concerts on their own. In the spring of 2014 they performed in a more German setting. The first half of the program was traditional songs, both in German and English, and the second half was a livelier affair celebrating the Carnival time in Germany. The audience was seated at round tables and brought their own drinks and snacks. One might say it was more like a musical party. This year they are once again following that party atmosphere making it unique in Sun City Center. The first half will be traditional music with emphasis on Melodies of Love and for the second half lots of fun is being planned while they are concentrating their talents on Tunes from the Wild West. The afternoon Musical Party will be held January 29, 2015 at 3 p.m. in the Florida Room — Atrium Building. Tickets are still only $5 per person and they are available from Mrs. Margot Gunther – 813633-0446, address: 1234 Fordham Dr., Sun City Center, FL 33573.

Submitted by Peggy Burgess News Correspondent The aroma of Thanksgiving turkey still hung in the air as Freedom Plaza’s first ornament of Christmas 2014 was hung. The tall Atrium tree had gone up in the early morning hours on the Friday after Thanksgiving and by day’s end was fully bedecked with its balls, baubles and beads. That speedy feat was accomplished by decorators from Sun City Center Flowers. The Atrium’s stair railings, freshly festooned with garland, perfectly framed the scene, yet something was missing…the sparkle of Christmas tree lights. D u r i n g t h e f o l l ow i n g d ay s Christmas trees appeared on the four balconies overlooking Atrium, all of them artfully decorated, but none lighted. All were waiting for a special Freedom Plaza event, the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. At the appointed time, the Atrium filled with excited residents and the punch bowls brimming with eggnog, Freedom Plaza’s Executive Director, Kevin Knopf, spoke the long-awaited words: “Let there be light!” Brilliance blazed from trees and garlands as a joyful chorus of “O, Christmas Tree” resounded. Freedom Plaza’s holiday season was officially begun. And what a season it was! It had a spectacular start with an excursion to the Lakeland Center for the thrilling Cirque Dreams Holidaze. A few days later there was yet another excursion, this to Mahaffey Theatre and The Kenny Rogers Holiday Show. Next came A Scrumptious Holiday with Diversity, the Voices of Sarasota, and then The Ditchfields’ Christmas Memories at Sarasota Opera House. The three-day excursion to Ft. Myers, with its train ride and boat trip to view the waterway lighting display, also included an evening at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and A Christmas Carol. “Meanwhile back at the ranch,” at Freedom Plaza, itself, a wealth of holiday happenings was underway. Santa and Mrs. Claus hosted a party for children of Freedom Plaza associates, while the Director’s Holiday Sip & Social furnished

residents a festive affair. Christmas music was nearly continuous with visits from The Caroling Sheriffs, a Girl Scout troop, the choir of Trinity Baptist Church and our own Freedom Singers. That group’s “Caroling Around the Tree” program featured a calypso beat and guest guitarist, Eddy Lugo. December ended on a happy note from the Stan Blum Band at our New Year’s Eve dance in the Auditorium. These holiday festivities and, in fact, the whole year of 2014—with its theatrical productions and educational programs; its parties and entertainments; its intriguing excursion and, most of all, its compliment of interesting new residents—will be a hard act to follow. Yet the 2015 calendar is already filling with fascinating attractions. These include concerts and golf tournaments, plus a Caribbean cruise and another to explore The Great Rivers of Europe. The residents and staff of Freedom Plaza send this New Year’s greeting to all their Sun City Center friends: “May you find joy in whatever you do, and good fortune all the year through.”

John & Linda Mayoka recently clicked two items off their bucket list--standing on the Arctic Circle and seeing the aura borealis. Yes, it was cold!

Marlus Johns of Sun City Center and her sister Marcene Casper from Nampa, Idaho recently enjoyed a beautiful cruise up the New England Coast and down the St. Lawrence waterway to Quebec City and back to New York.

Roger and Ursula Clark, Gert and Jerry Affayroux, searched for a “shared roof ” summer residence at the Biltmore House, America’s largest home, Asheville, NC.

Jean Wheat, Nancy Mercer, Millie Grasser three Sicilian ladies visiting Sicily going through all the beautiful countryside and having overnight stays in Taormina, Palermo, Ragusa, Syracuse, Catania. They ate lots of pasta, seafood, drank wine and had a terrific time. Our memories will last a long time.

Now available … heart valve repair

without open-heart surgery The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital is among the first hospitals in Florida to offer the highly advanced MitraClip procedure

When the heart’s mitral valve – which controls blood flow through the heart – does not close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation (MR). MR can cause heart failure, with symptoms like shortness of breath and fluid buildup. Now there is a treatment that can reduce symptoms and possibly extend lives – and it’s available at The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Manatee Memorial is among the first hospitals in the United States to make MitraClip available to patients, after meeting rigorous criteria mandated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. Manatee Memorial’s MitraClip team consists of specially trained physicians in echocardiography, interventional cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. An important member of the team is the Valve Coordinator, Erin Crowell, BSN, CCRN, who acts as the hospital/physician liaison for patients and their families throughout the process. Ms. Crowell is present during the MitraClip insertion and follows patients from hospitalization to discharge.

Magnificent Lipizzans By Kai Rambow Many travelers are disappointed when they reach Vienna, home of the famous Spanish Riding School. They want to see the Lipizzaners or Lipizzans perform, however, most tourists visit Vienna during the summer months, when the horses are not on tour, resting elsewhere in Austria. Fortunately for us, one Austrian family settled here in Florida, and we can easily see them rehearse during the winter months. If you’ve ever ridden a horse, you’ll remember it is not as easy as it looks. Pay attention during the show: they use English saddles and most of the riders do not have stirrups. It’s all about balancing and being one with the animal. A Family Tradition for Many While the Herrmann family has continued hundreds of years of history, they are not the only ones. Gabby Herrmann, who now directs the operation, shared, “We now have the third generation of families visiting us every year. People whose parents brought them here are now bringing their children.” It’s more than a tradition. “It’s living history,” described Gabby, “of the ballet dancers of the horse world.” Indeed, the horses were bred for their strength, agility and balance. Primarily trained for the battlefield, they were also a preferred breed for royalty. The Spanish Riding School is the

oldest riding academy in the world and has operated for over 430 years. The Herrmann family has continued the tradition here in America for the past 50 years. Horses’ Natural Movements Used Everything the Lipizzans are taught to do is based on their natural movements. They are considered to be late bloomers and only start their training at age three. Before that time, trainers pay attention to what the horse does naturally on its own. The dressage basics are taught to every horse, however, the special talents are shown by those animals with natural tendencies. I had the opportunity to watch the horses relax on a non-training day. They love to race around and play. Tips for a Great Visit Watch the address. You are looking for 32755, which will be on your left hand side. Print a map as a backup. My GPS goofed, and didn’t quite get me there. (No cell reception from road.) Plan on an hour drive and that should give you plenty of time. Arrive about 30 minutes before the show starts. There are some bleachers in partial shade, however, you should wear a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. You can bring your own chairs if you prefer, and set up right beside the ring. The training sessions are a little over an hour and after you can get a snack, get your picture taken with a horse or have children ride a pony. If you
