Annual Meeting Report

By John Bowker 285 residents attended the Annual Membership Meeting in Community Hall on January 6. Three residents of Sun City Center were sworn in as directors of our Community Association for three year terms as a result of resident votes in December: John Luper and Jim Schwartz are newcomers to the Board of Directors, and the current Board Treasurer Neil Rothfeld all accepted three year terms of office administered by CA President, David Floyd. Floyd awarded citations to individuals for outstanding volunteer work on behalf of Sun City Center. We were reminded that there are two open seats on the CA Board at this time due to recent resignations by board members, and appointments to the board will be considered by the existing board members during February. Transfer fees for 480 homes were received by the CA Board in 2015 so we can see that Sun City Center continues to be attractive to buyers even after our 54 years. Those fees totaled $720,000 and were applied directly to the CA Capital Fund for use in the construction of new amenities on the CA campuses. All approvals for construction of an enlarged café as an addition to the Atrium Building have been received and

are under final review by The Projects Office of the CA. Construction should begin during the first quarter of 2016. Our Beautiful Entryway

By John Bowker Sun City Center Boulevard is a welcoming entrance to our town with its well-kept medians tailored by the Greater Sun City Center Beautification Corporation. Home values are based in significant measure by the first impressions one gets upon entering a community, so the investment in keeping that entry in superb condition is well placed. For many first time visitors to Sun City Center, their access to homes and amenities they have come to inspect then takes them along North or South Pebble Beach Boulevard. The streets themselves are the responsibility of our county, but the appearance of the landscape along those pavements is up to us. For the past five decades we have always turned to the developers of Sun City Center to make sure everything was trimmed – after all, they were here to sell houses so everything had to be just right. In a couple of years our last such benefactor will be leaving us as the last open lots are developed and sold. The responsibility for designing, implementing and paying for the needed median replacements, along with their maintenance year after year, will be ours. Ed Barnes, Chair of the Community Association’s Pebble Beach Medians Committee, reports that the present median plantings on the Pebble Beach Boulevards are costing our Minto developer about $100,000 a year to irrigate and fertilize, to mow and trim,

North Pebble Beach median reconstruction began in 2013.

and to provide occasional replacements. We need to get those costs under control, Barnes warns, pointing out there are 11,000 of us living in town and you can do the arithmetic about what it would cost each of us to divide up that total. Ed is working with a talented group of individuals including Master Gardeners Ron Pelton and Teri Brockway, along with horticulture enthusiasts John Jackson, John Luper, Sam Sudman, Joe Elam, Howie Griffin and IT technician Tom Schmitt to see what can be done to bring those costs down. We have learned the new term “Florida Friendly” in the lexicon of decorative plantings. Two of the medians on North Pebble Beach Boulevard have been replanted with remarkable results. During 2013, with substantial financial support from the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center, the sod on the first two medians was ripped up and replaced with ground cover requiring less irrigation and less regular attention from costly manpower running mowers. We can all be proud

of the 10 Home and Property Owner Associations who submitted minigrants to Hillsborough County for funding of the plants, ground cover and rock borders of each converted median. In fact, In September 2014, the Community Association was awarded the Hillsborough County Water Wise Award for the two medians converted to Florida Friendly. This year, Barnes and his crew are launching the conversion of three additional medians on North Pebble Beach Boulevard with the assistance of 10 additional Home Owner Associations for funding of the plants. For this new effort Barnes has received substantial financial support for the Sun City Center Men’s Club and the Interfaith Council

We must plan to re-plant many of the Pebble Beach medians over the years, but if we do the job right, the increases in our property values will more than make up for the costs. Of course, the maintenance of those medians will, ultimately, fall back on the residents through its CA dues. This is yet another sign of what can be accomplished by this all-volunteer community when we work together.

What’s New at the Library? By Elaine Birkinshaw, Library Administrator

VOLUNTEER PICNIC

Book lovers, mark your calendar, set your alarm, get your shopping bags ready! The library’s annual BIG BOOK SALE will be held Saturday and Sunday, February 6 and 7 in the Caper Room of the Atrium Building. Doors open promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday and we will be open until 4 p.m. that day. Sunday will be reducedprice day and we will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. As always, we have plenty of paperback books for just twenty cents and top quality hardcover books ranging in price from fifty cents to a few dollars. Jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, antique books—you just don’t know what treasures you may find. Our library book club is off to a great start. Fifteen people attended our organizational meeting in January so we will be moving out into the Reference Room for the next meeting. On Thursday, February 11 at 10 a.m., we will be discussing The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. If you would like more information, please contact our book club chairperson Marilyn Miller at 813-633-3494. Climate change and global warming are making big headlines these days, but what if our Mother Earth is hiding a deep, angry secret that will propel us instead into an apocalyptic winter? Such is the premise of the Supervolcano Trilogy by Harry Turtledove. Visitors have been attracted to Yellowstone National Park for many years to see the warm springs and spouting geysers. It all seems so beautiful and peaceful until the day there is a large volcanic eruption in the park. Is this a stand-alone event or the precursor to something really big? Golden Globe winners and Academy Award nominations have now been announced. Several of the winners and nominees are based on some great books you may have missed. For example, Room by Emma Donoghue was published in 2010. Room is a novel of suspense about a kidnapped college student who is willing to risk all to achieve freedom for herself and her five-year-old son. The Martian by Andy Weir was first published as an eBook in 2011. The book gained so much popularity on Amazon that Crown Publishing bought the rights and reprinted it in hardcover in 2013. It was quickly optioned by Twentieth Century Fox and brought to the screen by Ridley Scott in 2015. The book tells the story of a NASA astronaut trapped on Mars with no way to contact Earth. He is the first man to walk on Mars. Will he be the first to die there? Happy Reading!

Annual from page 1. on our streets. The questioner suggested the CA install signs controlled by radar showing car speeds as is now done on the two Del Webb Boulevards. We expect the new brighter mix of limestone and gravel road surfaces in the parking areas around Community Hall will provide improved lighting. The CA will review the need for more lighting at the pedestrian crossings of Cherry Hills Drive near the Arts and Crafts Building. Beautification: The CA and the county share responsibilities for keeping the community attractive; of course, the CA can only control its owned properties but frequently alerts the county on matters throughout the community needing their attention.

In appreciation of your hard work, dedication and support given to the CA throughout the year, the Board of Directors cordially invites you to attend a picnic lunch in your honor on: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2016 FLORIDA ROOM 12 noon to 2 p.m.

President’s Report By CA President David Floyd

NEW CAFÉ Staging of materials for the new café will take place in March. Construction will start in April. Construction will take two to three months. Our coffee kiosk will be closed during the main construction period. The Board will evaluate offers to run the café when it is completed. It is our responsibility to see that a contractor will provide the best services for our membership. A contractor will be selected during the construction, so the café will be in operation as soon as possible. OPEN SEATS ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS Your Community Association has two open Board positions due to resignations. The Board will appoint two new members as Directors for the year 2016. It will be a one-year appointment only and will expire on January 4, 2017. You may run for office in 2016 for the year 2017 or for a three-year term. Applications for appointment were accepted until 3 p.m. on January 29, 2016. The Board has a number of candidates to review and interview. We expect to fill these positions in the first quarter of 2016. Interviews will start the week of February 15. 2016 PROJECTS As mentioned earlier, we will have the café expansion in 2016. It will be funded from both the Capital and the Replacement Funds. We have approved the contract to expand and redo the shell lot parking at the south campus. There will be better parking for events and the sports complex. The roads will also be improved. In February we will begin to upgrade our landscaping, replacing old bushes, planting more bushes and trees, and, replacing poorly sodded areas. NORTH CAMPUS TRAIL The Audubon Club submitted a proposal to the Community Association regarding the west campus trail. The Board has accepted their proposal. They have proposed improving and maintaining the trail, the installation of signs to identify the trail’s flora and fauna, and building an information kiosk at the entrance. The work on the trail has begun. The CA Maintenance staff is assisting the Audubon Society with the project. CA funding support is coming from discretionary funds. The CA thanks them for their support. POLICY ADDITION A section IX was added to our policy manual. This new section is for vendors, contractors and licensees. It sets out the CA position on equal rights and campus behavior for our vendors, contractors and licensees. INFORMATION CENTER FOUNTAIN You may have noticed that on some days the fountain is not in operation. We do not operate the fountain on windy days as the water is blown out of the fountain. This is done to conserve water.

MEET YOUR

NEIGHBOR By Agnes Baker Meet Dan and Linda Cannistra. This high-energy couple moved to Sun City Center in June, 2013. The draw? So many activities; so much from which to choose! They met at the University of South Florida, Tampa campus and have two children: son Joseph, his wife Robyn and a grandson Jordan (3 yrs) in California; and daughter Emily who lives in South Carolina. Dan worked in the regulated freight forwarding/ transportation industry, ending a thirty-year association when he retired. Linda worked in the office of a plant/landscaping nursery in Bradenton, Florida before she changed careers and spent the next 28 years with a law firm. In 1993, Dan and Linda began raising and showing Appaloosa horses on a ranch in Bradenton and, in June, 2006 they made the move from Bradenton to Mabank, Texas - horse country southeast of Dallas - residing there until they moved to Sun City Center. Now full time residents of our community, he serves on the Sun City Emergency Response team; is a “Bow and Arrow” member of the Archery Club and is active in the Investment Club. In addition he volunteers with the Hope Fund, while she is with the Timesteppers,

Jazzamatazz, and is Vice President of the Latin Fitness club. They are members of the Couple Country Dancing group, St. Pete Bike Club, the Silver Strides Running Club and assist with the triathlon and Senior Olympic games. Extremely active - Dan and Linda have certainly found a niche - and we are grateful they found us!

Community Church College Celebrates 40 Years

College Board and Staff, L to R: Jan Kopische, Judy Stevens, Anne Ginevan, Dean, Barbara Brtva, Muriel Akroyd, AnnMary Kapusta, Lisa Ushman, Wiley Mangum, Roxann Seeley and Office Manager Larry Piechoski along with picture of Dr. Gingery.

By Larry Piechoski An Educational Institution “That is Old But Acts Young”,
The Community Church College on North Pebble Beach is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary. It is one of the longest-existing institutions in Sun City Center. It was started in 1976 when this whole area was mostly farm country and had far fewer people. Back then, the founding minister of the Community Church, Robert Gingery, had the idea that people want to keep learning when they retire. He decided to form a place where people of all kinds and denominations could come for entertainment, inspiration, and information on every subject. Even though the church, quite a large building, would provide offices, classrooms, and school equipment, the offerings would be secular and on every topic of interest - practical, self-help, entertainment, academic, hobbies, health.
In all those years, the school has been as steady as the warm Florida winters, always there and never missing a year or a “mini-semester”. Just as the church was the first church in town and would welcome and provide a gathering place for every religion (hence the name “community” church), the school would provide a venue for every interest, for everyone who wanted “lifelong learning” of whatever kind. It would be a service to the community. Last year for the first time courses began to vary in length from as short as one week or as long as six weeks. This year there will be some offerings at entirely different times from the traditional two sixweek terms. In the discussion stage are plans for a possible “single lecture day” (a smorgasbord of one hour lectures all taking place during a single day so people can get sort of a “Whitman’s Sampler” of the kinds of things the school offers) and some “skills workshops” which, if there is community interest, may appeal to working people as well as retirees interested in improving communications, persuasion, problem-solving and other skills in a hands-on and

interactive manner.

This term there will be sixty different classes. Courses range from retirement planning, Medicare, and nutrition to dealing with finances, to how-to and hands on classes such as photography and conversational Spanish, to a slide presentation on great works of art, to dealing with emotions, to entertaining subjects such as “naughty texts of the Bible” taught by the church’s senior minister. The school has long been a serious operation, run professionally by people with a background in education and administration. Many of the instructors and students come back year after year as well. The Winter/Spring term runs from February 8 through March 18. Each class meets for 90 minutes and the cost is $25 for a six-week course or $6 per session if you want to attend on a class-byclass basis. Walk-ins (someone who has not registered for the entire course, but wants to try out or attend a single session) are welcome. And in fact, that’s a good way to “test the waters” - to drop in on the first of several classes and then decide which ones to attend all the way through.

Full descriptions, times, and classrooms for every course (as well as many one-day bus trips) are on the school’s website: “4lifelearning. org”. Course catalogs and in the church office or the church lobby and available around town. For example at the SCC library, the South Shore Regional Library on 19th Avenue, the CA gym, and the Kings Point South and North Clubhouses.

Classes are held at the United Community Church, United Church of Christ. It is a huge building with a red and white steeple about two hundred yards north of the Community Association complex on North Pebble at 1501 La Jolla Ave. If you want to register in person, the college office is in the church. It is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon for the next several weeks and during the school term. Phone is: (813)-634-8607. Email is: tri-c@verizon. net. There is a form on the school’s website for online registration.

Ever heard of the Sawdust Engineer’s Club? It’s a SCCCA Club which offers an excellent facility for woodworkers in SCC. It has about 300 members with expertise in about every phase of woodworking. One of our members, Phil Baker from New Hampshire, is an expert at fret (scroll) work. Phil started woodworking in High School shop class. During his married/ business life Phil only built “need based” woodwork. After retiring he started making “feel good” items. He defines these as items others appreciate and enjoy. This then makes Phil “feel good”. Some of the most popular items Phil makes are Military plaques for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. These make great gifts for retired and active duty Military personnel. His religious items are also in great demand. Having been a resident of SCC for two years and also a Sawdust Engineers member, Phil asks, “Where else can you have so much fun for $30 per year? You only need wood and an idea. Everything else, including training and assistance is available in the club.”

Lions International

By Ilona Merritt For nearly 100 years, Lions Club members have worked on projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Their success is known all over the world, and so it is no wonder when we hear the words “Lions Club” we think of the organization which works to prevent blindness and saving sight for millions of people around the world. However, the Lions stand for so much more. Lions perform handson community service and, around the world, Lions demonstrate their commitment to the environment. When a natural disaster strikes, Lions are among the first to offer volunteer disaster relief. The Lions Clubs International has a long tradition of helping children, the world’s future generation. And the list of services goes on. Therefore it is no wonder that our local Lions Club is very active in raising funds Lions President, Gloria Rodzielowicz, to support local organizations. Recently, with Billy. the Sun City Center Lions Club made a donation of $500 to My Warriors Place. The money will go towards the building of a ramp into one of the buildings on the grounds at My Warriors Place. The Lions donated to the Good Samaritan Mission, Reddick Elementary School, Wimauma Elementary School, and Boy Scouts Troop 204, which meets at the United Methodist Church in Sun City Center. Members are invited to make suggestions of organizations needing help and the Board makes the final decision. I had the opportunity to spend some time with President Gloria Rodzielowicz and her four-legged companion Billy, a well trained and groomed black Labrador. She has a vision problem, but it has not slowed down her enthusiasm for the Lions Club. At this years Christmas party they did away with the gift exchange, instead everyone brought food to be distributed to local food banks. The Sun City Center Lions club is a very supportive group consisting of 49 members. Anyone is welcome to join; all it takes is a willingness to serve. The Lions meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at the Sandpiper Grille, 1702 South Pebble Beach Boulevard, 11 a.m. All are welcome to come visit, and see what the Lions are all about. If you have any questions, please call Lions Gloria Rodzielowicz 419-4187 or Ellen & Terry McGovern 633-4202.

SCC Woodcarvers

Ralph Frenzilli of Sun City Center won the best of show award at the prestigious 2016 Florida Winter National Wood Art Expo & Competition held in Punta Gorda with his relief carving entitled World War 1 Battle Horse. This relief carving represents many years of history – demonstrating loyalty and faithful service. The horse is the most recognized animal in warfare dating back to 1350 BC. Ralph a member of the Sun City Woodcarvers Club lost count of the number of hours designing and creating this wonderful work of art. National respected Judges Chau Pham of Winter Haven and Josh Guge of Elgin Ill, almost instantly recognized Ralph’s entry as best of the 350+ entries in the competition, and then spent considerable effort in verifying the authenticity of his entry before conferring the award. Winning this award means that Ralph is required to compete at the Master Carver level (the highest competitive level) in future competitions. Ralph’s stunning carving will be the centerpiece during the month of April in the Atrium display window the woodcarvers share with the Photo Club.
