The Editor’s Corner They Want YOUR Money

By Adam Porter, Editor in Chief, NOKP Okay. So up until five minutes ago I was planning to write a completely different column this month. You’ll just have to wait for next month, I suppose. Normally, I would leave the scam alert stuff to Deputy Chris. He’s does a great job keeping us up to date on that. But if this could happen to me, it could happen to anyone. And this is too fresh, too important to let it pass. If I help even one person I will count it a success. First, a little background… In addition to my duties here at the News of Kings Point, I write for several clients, some local, others national or international. One of my regular clients uses the same business bank as me. Not surprising, it’s one of the largest national banks. That means convenience and high tech service options. All good things. And this is not a screed against the bank. Been with them for years. They’re good people over there. So, the other day I received an unsolicited phone call from someone identifying themselves as “from [my bank].” They were calling “because they noticed the both my business and this other client both banked at [that bank]. Okay so far… but why the call? They went on to say (sounding every bit like they were reading from a script) that they wanted to offer me the convenience of direct deposit. The client, they assured me, paid many of their vendors that way and wanted to add me to that list. Less paperwork, protect the environment. Yada, yada, yada. I was skeptical. In every other case of direct deposit I have EVER encountered the client or business had approached me about it. I explained that I thought the bank calling me was a bit odd and that I would have to get

back with them. I hung up. Then I called the number back. “[Name of bank], how can I help you?” Hmm…interesting, maybe this was legitimate. I hung up and called the business in question. They responded that they were not sure if they offered direct deposit to vendors but would get back to me. A few days passed… No follow up calls from the “bank.” So I called them. A ring or two then, “[Name of bank], how can I help you?” Hmmm… Then, just a few minutes ago, I received a call from my client. They did NOT offer direct deposit to me. They don’t offer direct deposit at all. “I think someone’s trying to get your information.” Yep. Thankfully, I did not fall for the scam. But, since it’s been running now for at least a week, I’m sure some people have. So… Here’s the moral. Never, never, NEVER give your banking information to anyone who calls you on the phone. It doesn’t matter if they sound legitimate. It doesn’t matter if you call back and they answer with the name of the bank. They may even be AT the bank. But they are not the bank. They are trying to take you to the cleaners. These days, with the economy being what it is, law enforcement is telling us to expect more scams like this one. And, with technology being what it is, they will become easier and more convincing. So, how can you be sure you aren’t being taken? Well, if you are signing up for banking service, do it AT the bank. If your employer offers direct deposit, only sign up at work or at the bank. Do NOT do it over the phone. If they call you, fine, set up a time to go in and see them. It’s your money. Protect it.

We here at both the News of Kings Point and the News of Sun City Center would like to congratulate Karen and thank the Military Order of the World Wars for recognizing her outstanding work on behalf of that organization and all veterans here in 33573. She does an incredible job not only with reporting about veterans news, but also with keeping our community well informed about all the clubs, groups and goings on here in Sun City Center. Take a bow, Karen. Well deserved, indeed.

By Brenda Wiseman Sitting in the southeast corner of the parking lot next to the pool at the Main Clubhouse is a gem of an office that can help you answer almost any question you may have about the happenings in Kings Point and provides an amazing assortment of services for the residents. It is the Condominium Owners Association, or better known as the COA. When I stopped by recently to talk with the folks who were manning the office, there was a steady stream of residents walking through the door to avail themselves of some of the COA’s services. A gentleman was returning a wheelchair he had borrowed. Another gentleman came in to use the FAX machine. Two residents were preparing cards to be posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. One to sell a car and one looking for a condo to rent. Another resident came in to let them know her posting had been a success. She had sold her concert tickets, so her card could be removed. Next time you are in the Clubhouse, check out the bulletin board. You never know what you may find that you just have to have-golf carts, furniture, or musical instruments. There are so many good things the COA does for us. I am betting there are services you use not knowing they are the people responsible for maintaining them. Have you ever used the air compressor at the Clubhouse to fill your golf cart tires? Have you ridden the Hartline bus to Brandon for free? Have you ever taken a book out of our beautiful library? Have you ever had your blood pressure taken by the SCC Emergency Squad? Or have you ever used the copy machines in either Clubhouse? (Four reams of paper are used per week in the Main Clubhouse alone!) You can do all these activities thanks to the COA. The office runs on volunteer power--17 to be exact. The Head Honcho Volunteer, otherwise known as the President, is Charles Hassell. He and the Board of Directors, Millie Aumack, Roberta Walker, Forrest Davis, Arlene McCabe, and Dottie Shannon, plus the other residents who donate their time to keep the doors open during the week, make sure things run smoothly while always having a smile on their faces. If you are looking for cheerful help, this is the place to go. As I overheard a resident say as she left the office, “This was fun!” The office also runs on funds from two sources. One source being the $3.00 per unit per year from our fees and $40,000 from the yellow pages in the membership/phone directory. Part of these funds are given

quality of life. So stop by the COA office at 1902-B Clubhouse Drive and buy some stamps, get papers notarized, or pick up a voter registration card. Even if you don’t need any of these, you will be sure to walk away with a smile.

Sun City Center, Florida – Feline Folks set a new record of 662 cats spay neutered and 220 adoptions of feral cats in the South Shore area in 2011. Feline Folks is a local organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats. A 501©, (3) nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Feline Folks strives to control the feline population in our community and eliminate the need for euthanasia. The community program advocates for humane methods of feral cat care, particularly Trap-NeuterReturn in South Shore Hillsborough County. This year they have served the communities of Sun City Center, Ruskin, Apollo Beach, Riverview, Gibsonton, Wimauma, Valrico, Boyette, Brandon, Plant City and Tampa. Feline Folks utilizes a Spay/Neuter Clinic “Operation Feline Fix” on the 3rd Saturday of every month in partnership with C.A.R.E Animal Shelter in Ruskin. Be Careful Where You Exercise

Submitted By Deputy Chris Girard In recent weeks I have received several calls concerning trespassing complaints on North Course Lane in Sun City Center. In areas with posted NO TRESPASSING signs residents and guests should refrain from using North Course Lane for jogging, biking, hiking, etc. Exacerbating this issue is the fact that there are already several “NO TRESPASSING” signs posted along North Course Lane that are being ignored. In fact, some of those signs have been repeatedly removed. While we understand that North Course Lane appears to be an inviting stretch of road on which to exercise, we must enforce the current regulations. In regards to the removal of posted “NO TRESPASSING” signs, please be advised that Florida Statute 810.10 (Removing Official Notices) states that it is a misdemeanor to remove, destroy, mutilate or commit any act designed to remove a posted

clothing and, when possible, wear reflective shoes. Otherwise you can easily become invisible to drivers. If you have one, wear a reflective vest. While you are doing everything you can to keep fit, remember to do everything you can to stay visible to other drivers. One more quick note… We all love the community Nearly New Shop. These folks do a great service and are terrific neighbors to have. Many times the nearly new shop leaves items outside for individuals to come by and pick up during business hours. However, some folks are confused and have been coming by after business hours and taking items that have been dropped off to the shop. This has resulted in multiple calls to the HCSO reporting people stealing from the shop. While we can understand the possible confusion, we recommend that

trespassing sign. Those caught doing so could be charged. Now, on to a more positive note about exercising… Lately I’ve seen several residents working hard on their resolutions to stay in shape. In the evening I’ve seen jogging, walking and biking during most of my cruises through the community. While it is great to see residents exercising, it really is difficult to actually SEE you, particularly at night. Be aware and take steps to stay visible. Wear light or bright

you both drop off and pick up items at Nearly New Shop during regular business hours. Thanks. And be safe out there.

Kings Point Lawn Bowling

Submitted by Suzanne Maguire The social life of the KP lawn bowler just keeps rolling along. Carole Robek just keeps things hopping & bopping. In addition to the usual gayety at the green, the club met during January for an evening of Krazy Kards, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. On Wednesday, February lst, the club had a regular Bowling Party at the Alleys on Big Bend Road. Even though most of the group had not bowled in many a year, all donned shoes, grabbed a ball heavier than anything they had lifted for a while and went at it. The first games were a crazy mix of fun tricks but it worked to loosen everyone up and then they really swung that ball. The “Strike” & “Spare” lights were flashing & blinking constantly. The Annual Bowling Tournament begins Saturday and Sunday, February 25th and 26th and will conclude Saturday and Sunday, March 3rd and 4th (rain dates will be determined). Please sign up at the Lawn Bowling Club House (DESK) to enter Mens/Women’s Singles, Pairs and Novice play. Entry fee, per event, is $4.00 and may be given to Karen Crippen (Treasurer). Checks may be written to KPWLBC. Single events will be 14 ends, pair events will be 12 ends. February 18th is the closing date for entry. Do yourself a huge favor, check us out, you will not be disappointed. Anyone, at any age can play and play well. It is fun, exercise and a day out in the beautiful Florida weather. Ask any LBer and they will tell you it is the “Best Club” in town.

Thirteen Holes in One and Still Going!

Jack Gillich, 82 years young

Most of us are very happy to have accomplished this golf feat one time. Jack Gillich, 82 years young resident of Freedom Plaza at Sun City Center, has 13 such strokes on his record! Jack moved into Freedom Plaza four years ago and so far has four “holes in one” on Freedom’s golf course, Freedom Fairways. Jack really enjoys the course which is a gem. Freedom Fairways is an “executive course with 9 par 3’s and 9 par 4’s. Normal play can be completed in less than three hours. Jack’s latest accomplishment was on February 2 with a 9 wood on a 113 yard par 3 hole. His playing partners were Warren Watson, Wayne Petersen, and jack Marschel. For more information call Freedom Fairways at (813) 633-4653.

A luncheon at the new Sandpiper restaurant followed and Kris was given a donation from the tournament to help cover the cost of her medications. A Scepter Golf Men's team shot a net 54 in an 18-hole scramble and was given gift baskets donated by Barbara and Bob Beck. Our Sun City Center community is truly about service and giving and this tournament involved many volunteers. Special thanks to Tom Ritenour from Club Link, who donated the course and assisted with details and Lisa Lipnicky, Scepter Club Pro, who assisted with pairings along with club captains Judy Frank and Carolyn Avrett. Kris Wells, Scepter Captains Judy Frank and Carolyn Avrett.

All the proceeds this year will be used to pay for general operating costs at East Bay Christian School. If you can help us by participating in sponsoring a hole or supplying door prizes, please let me know. Anything will be a blessing. The cost of the tournament is $50.00 per individual or $200.00 per team. We will play a “best ball” format. Therefore, you may want to put together your own team or let us team you up with other individuals to make a team. We are also looking for businesses (or individuals) who would be willing to sponsor a hole where your business would be advertized. The cost per hole sponsor is $100.00. We also still need 2 major business sponsors who would like to sponsor the putting and chipping contests. The cost for these sponsors will be $500.00. A large banner will be made and displayed at the tournament and at all home games at our school. Please let me know if you can help us. In His Service, Mr. DuBois

SCC Softball Players Having Fun

By Rod Tannenholz The Kings Point Team vs the Trinity Baptist church put together a tournament of fun. On Monday, January 23rd, the field was filled with many familiar faces and a few not so familiar. The Trinity team captain was Russ Doerr, and they had quite a few of the SCC Senior league players on hand along with a few young membership players. The Kings Point team captain was Gary Gentzler and they too, had their fair share of SCC Senior league players also. The game was underway with the lineup players Trinity Baptist names announced by the great voice commentator John Sauber. The “Star Spangled Banner” opened the game and at the seventh inning stretch “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was sung by Salvina Tannenholz, a Kings Point resident entertainer and the wife of pitcher, Rod Tannenholz, one of the tournaments organizers. Among the other event organizers were Manny Isernia and Russ Doerr, all who worked hard to put these games together. Pastor Churchhill and Pastor Millican also helped with the Trinity line Kings Point

up. Thanks to the gals, Pegg Hickerson, Shirley Fleming, Salvina Tannenholz and Linda Maslyk who volunteered to help with the refreshments. Thank you girls... Great job. Many team supporters, friends and spouses were there cheering and encouraging their team players on. The Trinity team had their own cheering section including team chants, megaphones and pompoms. What a site to behold. Everyone had the best time and we even had the opportunity to meet the Trinity players in person, a real nice bunch of guys. Pizza was the after game snack and enjoyed by one and all. We invite folks from SCC and KP to come out and watch our fun games. Looking forward to seeing you there to cheer us on. The upcoming softball tournaments are: Mason- Dixon / North vs South on Monday, March 12 at 12:00 Noon Tournament of Champions on Saturday, March 24 at 10:00 AM

SCC FunFest will be Special This Year! By Phyllis Hodges On March 17 (9 AM. to 3 PM), the Community Association Central Campus, N. Pebble Beach Blvd., will be rocking with FunFest 2012. Admission is FREE and it’s open to the public. This is the day we showcase the Sun City Center lifestyle! Five to six thousand people flood the campus each year to enjoy the entertainment, exhibits and food. “This year’s FunFest is part of SCC’s year-long 50th Anniversary Celebration, so the golden anniversary theme is being combined with the “green” of St. Patrick’s Day,” says Jane Keegan, FunFest chair. She added that there will be more “golden oldies” music on the agenda to highlight the era of Del Webb’s unique vision of the lifestyle we enjoy today. Shuttle Service/Parking To avoid a parking hassle at the Central Campus, park at Community Hall on S. Pebble Beach and ride the two buses which will be making continuous loops throughout the day. The free transportation starts at 8:30 a.m. with the last bus departing the Central Campus at 3:30 p.m. If you’re driving, golf carts are the optimum way to go. Parking spaces will again be available at N. Pebble Beach and Cherry Hills, as well as on a blocked-

off area of the North Course. The entrance to that N. Course parking area is directly in front of the Fitness Center. Sponsors Without our sponsors, this event would not be possible. Take the opportunity to pick up valuable product and service information at their displays and tell them you appreciate their support. Health Fair Don’t miss the Health Fair! Health care professionals will be offering information and various tests in the Atrium rooms. The mobile units participating will be parked on the east side of the Atrium. Food/Clubs/Community Group Participation Numerous clubs and community organizations will have representatives on campus to tell you all you want to know about their activities. Food offerings to suit all tastes are sponsored by SCC clubs, and club displays and open rooms will be open to welcome visitors with their wares and information. Entertainment Galore Judy Schings, entertainment chair, says that new entertainment will include a LET’S DANCE tent by the Arts and Crafts Center. Kings Point Italian Cultural Club

AMICI, the Kings Point Italian Cultural Club, hosted the St. Petersburg Dancers in an evening of Italian song, dance and humor. The Dancers, who perform throughout Florida at festivals, parties and community events, feature Tarantellas from all regions of Italy. Performing with precision, energy and a sense of history and fun, their colorful costumes, engaging music and fun filled skits, as well as an accordion player, kept the audience involved. The moderator explains about the dance and the region from which it originates. The dancers wear costumes appropriate for that region. Richard Tellone, a member of the group, visits Italy to bring back new dances, which Rosalie Gallina choreographs for the troupe. The crowd, which filled the Kings Point Banquet Room to capacity, enjoyed dances such as Lazy Mary – a dance that tells the story of a woman who’s so lazy she uses sheets right off her bed as a tablecloth. Audience members and entertainers mingled and became acquainted at a wine and cheese reception following the performance. AMICI hopes to have The Tarantella Dancers back next season for a surprise activity.

German-American Club Folk Dance Group Needs Your Help

Over the past couple of months this group has been affected by Mother Nature! Several of the group’s members are no longer able to be part of the Friday evening learning sessions. In some cases, one partner or the other is not able to dance. There is an instructor, music and dances - but there needs to be 3 or 4 more couples in order to continue. This number of couples will then allow us to have a good performing group, even when illness, vacations, visitors, etc. makes attendance impossible for all! The dances are not strenuous - but rather adaptations of steps to various rhythms - waltz, march, polka. Practice time is at 6:45 on Friday evenings (due to room availability) in the Dance Studio next to the Lap Pool in the North Atrium. Interested couples from Kings Point as well as Sun City Center are encouraged to stop in at these sessions, which will begin on March 9th. Any questions, please call Marty Gifford at 634-7092.

UMC to Host BU Seminary Singers

The United Methodist Church of Sun City Center, 1210 Del Webb Blvd. West, is proud to offer a free public concert of the Boston University School of Theology Seminary Singers on Friday, March 9th at 7PM in the church sanctuary. All are welcome to attend this dynamic evening of sacred choral music. The Boston University School of Theology, under the leadership of Dean Mary Elizabeth Mullino Moore, is the oldest theological seminary of American Methodism and the founding school of Boston University, the largest private research university in New England. Historically known as “The School of the Prophets,” its mission is to pursue knowledge of God, to cultivate leaders for communities of faith, to enrich the academy, and to seek peace with justice in a diverse and interconnected world. Notable alumni include leaders such as Anna Howard Shaw, famous suffragist and first woman ordained within American Methodism, the founders of both the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Seminary Singers of Boston University School of Theology hold a long and rich tradition of sacred choral music spanning eight decades. Today’s Seminary Singers, made up of students, faculty, and administrators of the School of Theology, are instrumental in the seminary’s

worship leadership. Many of the students are preparing for parish ministry; others are pursuing ministries such as sacred music, teaching, non-profit work, and chaplaincy, among others. The group tours the country as ambassadors for the School of Theology every few years; this year’s tour is throughout the state of Florida. The group includes members from all over the country and world, and prides itself on presenting quality sacred music reflecting that diversity. This year’s concert program, entitled “Bringing Light to the Darkness: Singing for Peace,” attempts to reflect that diversity by offering music in a variety of world languages, all focused on seeking God’s peace in the world. Concertgoers will hear traditional and modern takes on beloved hymnody and scriptural texts, as well as spirituals, gospels, and contemporary praise music. The concert will also feature several instrumentalists and African drumming. The goal of this year’s Seminary Singers tour is to empower God’s people to ‘bring light to the darkness’ by ‘singing for peace’ and rejoicing in God’s extravagant, diverse, and justice-filled love. For additional information about this and other events and activities at the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center, please, please contact Jeff Jordan, Director of Music and the Arts, at 813-634-2539.

Moments in Time The History Channel • On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. • On March 10, 1902, in the case of Edison v. American Mutoscope Company, the U.S. Court of Appeals rules that despite his claims, Thomas Edison did not invent the movie camera. The court did, however, admit that Edison invented the sprocket system that moved perforated film through the movie camera. • On March 9, 1913, English author Virginia Woolf delivers the manuscript of her first novel, “The Voyage Out,” to her publisher. In 1941, fearful for her own mental state and afraid of the coming world war, she filled her pockets with rocks and drowned herself. • On March 7, 1923, the New Republic publishes Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The poem begins with the famous line “Whose woods these are, I think I know.” Although Frost never

graduated from a university, he had collected 44 honorary degrees before he died in 1963. • On March 5, 1963, the HulaHoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented by the company’s cofounder, Arthur “Spud” Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula-Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone. • On March 11, 1970, author Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of Perry Mason, dies. The crime-solving attorney Perry Mason appeared in numerous novels and became the star of a top-rated TV show starting in 1957. The show starred Raymond Burr as the titular hero and ran for nine years. • On March 8, 1986, “Mask,” starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens in theaters. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman’s film “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in “Mask.” © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Blood Pressure: Both Numbers Are Important DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve always heard that at older ages, it doesn’t matter how high the first number of a blood pressure reading is; it’s bound to rise with age. My blood pressure is 185/70, and my doctor wants me to go on blood pressure medicine. My second number is fine. Why is he making a fuss? I am 67. I don’t like taking drugs. -- W.S. ANSWER: You have heard wrong. Both numbers of a blood pressure reading are significant. If either is higher than normal, it indicates high blood pressure. It is true that systolic pressure, the first number, rises with age. And it is true that the second number, diastolic pressure, tends to plateau after age 50. However, a higher-than-normal systolic or diastolic pressure constitutes hypertension, high blood pressure. The first number is the pressure imparted to blood when the heart pumps it into the aorta. It takes a great deal of pressure to circulate blood through all the body arteries. The second number is the pressure in the heart as it fills with blood. Normal pressure is less than 120/80. High blood pressure is 140/90 and above. Numbers between those two pressures are called prehypertension, a short stop lower than actual high blood pressure. You have high blood pressure, hypertension. You doctor made a fuss

because uncontrolled high blood pressure causes artery hardening, leads to strokes and heart attacks, puts the kidneys out of action, contributes to congestive heart failure and promotes dementia. Still think your pressure is OK? If you are overweight, weight loss brings pressure down. So does shunning salt. It’s not the saltshaker on the table that pushes people over the recommended daily limits (1,500 mg of sodium), but it is commercial foods. Become a reader of the sodium content of the foods you buy. Potassium lowers blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods are baked potatoes, bananas, orange juice, peas, beans, milk, spinach, squash, watermelon, figs and cantaloupe. Be as physically active as your doctor allows. If your pressure doesn’t fall, then you have to resort to medicines. Eight large drug families, yielding more than 57 different medicines, give you a wide choice to bring your pressure down without side effects. The booklet on high blood pressure will convince you of the importance of blood pressure control. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. By Angela Shelf Medearis ROASTED RED BELL PEPPER SOUP Red bell peppers are simply green bell peppers that have been left on the vine to continue to ripen. The long vine-ripening time increases the amount of vitamin C in the peppers. Adding cannelloni beans to the soup provides it with a creamy texture and boosts the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, protein and iron in the dish. Adding the lemon juice boosts the flavors of the soup and helps the body to absorb iron. 1 (15 ounce) jar of water. packed, roasted bell. peppers, or 3 fresh bell. peppers, roasted and peeled. (see Tips below) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground. black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon sugar 2 (15 ounce) cans cannelloni. beans, drained and rinsed 2 (14.5 ounce) cans low-. sodium chicken broth 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1. Drain the jar of bell peppers. In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Saute the onion and garlic in the oil for 5 minutes, or until the onion is translucent. Add the roasted red bell peppers, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and sugar. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes. 2. Place vegetables and the beans in a blender or food processor and puree. Add one can chicken broth. Puree the soup until smooth and return it to the pot. Stir in remaining can of chicken broth until mixture is smooth. Heat 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in lemon juice. Soup can be eaten hot or cold or used as a sauce for meats or vegetables. Tips for roasting fresh bell peppers: Preheat oven to broil. Place bell peppers on a baking sheet and broil on oven’s top rack, using tongs to turn them as each side blackens. Place blackened peppers in a paper bag, close tightly and allow to cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Peel off skin by

rubbing peppers with paper towels. Do not rinse peppers. Discard stems and all seeds, and slice the peppers. Just the Facts The health field has many interesting facts that are not well known. Here are some interesting nutrition, health and physical activity facts that might surprise you. Did you know that ... 1. A sweet red bell pepper has more vitamin C than an orange? One-half cup of red bell pepper has about 95 mg of vitamin C, compared to 70 mg in one medium orange. Try sliced raw red pepper in a salad or saute it in your fajitas for extra vitamin C. 2. Vitamin C helps your body absorb more iron? We best absorb iron from meat sources, but there also is iron in plants. Vitamin C helps with plant iron absorption as well as counteracting certain foods (such as tea) that may inhibit iron. Add some lemon juice to your tea or mandarin orange slices to your spinach salad to get the most iron from your foods. 3. Stretching after physical activity is more beneficial? A good warm-up before activity is essential, but stretching cold muscles may do more harm than good. At the end of a workout, muscles are warm and stretching can help prevent soreness later. 4. A baked potato with skin has twice as much potassium as a banana? A medium baked potato with skin has about 925 mg of potassium compared with 422 mg in a medium banana. Fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds are all good sources of potassium, so eat more of them. 5. Bread that is brown is not always 100 percent whole-wheat bread? It may be very similar nutritionally to white bread, but with brown coloring. Read the nutrition label and make sure the first ingredient has the word “whole” in it, then you’ll know you are getting 100 percent whole-wheat bread. Contract Bridge THE CLUES POINT THE WAY

Super Crossword Hollywood Headline

The secret of good declarer play lies mostly in visualizing how the unseen cards are divided and putting this knowledge to effective use. The clues that furnish declarer with a picture of the opposing hands can come from the bidding, the play or both. Consider this deal where declarer failed to process the many clues available. It was played in the South AfricaIreland match at the 1960 World Team Olympiad. The South African declarer got to four hearts doubled as shown,

and West led the club queen. South won with the ace, cashed the ace of trumps, felling East’s king, then led a diamond and successfully finessed the queen. After discarding a club on the ace of diamonds, declarer led a spade to the king, losing to the ace. South eventually lost two more spades and a trump trick and finished down one, -200 points. He was able to ruff his fourth spade in dummy to prevent an even greater loss. South’s early plays were certainly correct. The diamond finesse, though dangerous, was necessary, but after it succeeded South should have reassessed his prospects and made the contract. It was a serious mistake to lead a spade to the king at trick five. To play a spade from dummy was surely right, but to play the king was surely wrong. South should have placed West with the spade ace for his takeout double, because East had already turned up with the king of hearts and (by inference from West’s opening lead) king of clubs. Had South played a low spade on East’s eight at trick five and later played a low spade again, he would have gained a spade trick and made the contract. He also would have been 990 points to the better. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was English philosopher Francis Bacon who made the following sage observation: “The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses.” • I’m sure you’ve seen photos of those picturesque covered bridges. It seems that they would have provided a welcome haven for people driving buggies caught out in the rain. You may be surprised to learn, though, that the bridges weren’t designed with a roof for the comfort of travelers. Being made of wood in an era before protective sealants, the bridges themselves needed to be protected from the elements. • Most frogs lay their eggs in the water; that way, when the tadpoles hatch they are already in their element. The red-eyed tree frog, however, protects its eggs from aquatic predators by attaching its eggs to the underside of leaves that hang out over a body of water. Once the eggs hatch, the tadpoles fall into the water. • The next time you travel to the United Kingdom, if you visit the university towns of Cambridge or Oxford, you should keep off the grass. Professors are the only ones allowed to walk on most of the green swards in those towns. • In ancient Rome, it was widely believed that holding in gas could cause a person to catch a disease or become poisoned. This was such a concern to public health that Emperor Claudius went so far as to pass a law making it legal to fart at banquets. • Have you ever known someone who keeps making the same error over and over again despite being corrected?
