Get Ready for FunFest Submitted by Phyllis Hodges On March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Community Association Central Campus, N. Pebble Beach Blvd., will be rocking with FunFest 2013. Admission is free and it’s open to the public. This is the day we showcase the Sun City Center lifestyle! Five to six thousand people flood the campus each year to enjoy the entertainment, exhibits and food. “We chose the theme FunFest Goes Glam and are planning some fun things that reflect a spirit of glamour. For example, we plan to have a photo op station where you can have your picture taken with famous stars. Wear your bling and you will fit right in,” said Susan Muise, FunFest chair. Shuttle Service/Parking To avoid a parking hassle at the FunFest site, park at Community Hall on S. Pebble Beach and ride buses that will be making continuous loops throughout the day. The free transportation starts

at 8:30 a.m. with the last bus departing FunFest at 3:30 p.m. If you’re driving, golf carts are the optimum way to go. Golf cart parking spaces will again be available at N. Pebble Beach and Cherry Hills, as well as on a blocked-off area of the North Course. The entrance to that N. Course parking area is directly in front of the Fitness Center. “Where in the World” Cruise Contest winners dish about their trip By Eddie Dixon In 2012 the News of Kings Point kicked off its inaugural “Where in the World is the News of Kings Point” contest. Residents were encouraged to snap photos of themselves in their travels holding an issue of the paper. The winner would receive a Caribbean cruise courtesy of our travel partners, Legendary Journeys. In the first few months we received two to three entries per month. Later, that number doubled. At the end of the year the News of Kings Point held a drawing to pick a winner. Joe and Shonnee Conery won the prize. Recently, we caught up with Joe Conery to chat with them about their trip and relive some of the best memories of their time on the sea. ED: So who are ya, and who were ya before? Joe Conery: “We moved from Wesley Chapel to Kings Point in December of 2008.” ED: Are you involved in any local clubs or groups, and what do you do in your free time? Joe Conery: “Shonnee takes advantage of many of the

the Christmas holidays. They performed a special Christmas show in the theater with songs, Santa and a presentation by all the children that were sailing that week.” ED: You cruised the Western Caribbean. What were your ports of call, and did you have any favorite spots that stood out above the rest? Joe Conery: “We stopped in Key West, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios Jamaica. Our favorite spots were both in Jamaica, Mystic Mountain and Dunns River Falls.” Continued on Page 3

SCC Tax-Aide Celebrates 25 years of helping you with the Tax Man

Special to NOKP EDITOR’S NOTE: Hi friends. Given that April 15th is right around the corner I wanted to dedicate my column this month to telling you about a program that has been helping SCC residents keep on the right side of the IRS for a quarter century; and, if you need it, they are here to help this year as well. Here is who they are and what they do, courtesy of program coordinator, Marilyn Wilson. The Sun City Center Tax-Aide program will celebrate their 25th year doing free tax returns for the residents of the Greater Sun City Center area at the United Community Church at LaJolla Avenue and North Pebble Beach Boulevard. This AARP Foundation affiliate, with an all-volunteer staff of local residents, assisted more than 4,000 people during last year’s tax season! This remarkable total was accomplished by 37 Sun City Center volunteers who worked more than 3,000 hours at the United Community Church and the Ruskin Neighborhood Center preparing over 2,000 federal 1040 returns and assisting many shut-ins with their taxes. In addition, 24 Kings Point residents were trained in tax preparation law, filing procedure, and in efiling tax returns by computer and they efiled an additional 862 returns. Seven more volunteers arranged the appointments, greeted clients, and helped them identify records that would be needed to complete their tax returns. In setting up their schedule, the Tax Club used an all-day phone-in appointment plan at the United Community Church site so they could accommodate working people and those who have difficulty waiting for assistance. The volunteers filed over 1,900 returns, 98% of those 1040 returns by computer, a process that saves tax money, simplifies record-keeping, and speeds refunds.

Marilyn Wilson, the program local coordinator, advises everyone to bring photo ID and Social Security cards or Social Security statements for all persons, including dependents. Bring a copy of death certificate for any spouse deceased in 2012 or 2013. Bring a copy of any Power of Attorney if you plan to sign the return for that person. We need last year’s tax return, current W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for interest, dividends, stock sales, pensions, and IRA distributions. Please gather information about the purchase date and purchase price of any stock, etc. sold in 2012. Be sure to bring an accurate list of any estimated tax payments you sent to the IRS. Bring your checkbook if you want any refund directly deposited to your bank account. We reserve the right to see the Social Security cards for all persons listed on the return before we provide service. United Community Church (use west entrance) - North Pebble Beach at LaJolla - Sun City Center Monday through Friday - 9 AM to 4 PM - Walk-in service. For an appointment from February 1 - April 15 call 6343502. AARP free tax services are also provided at: Kings Point Clubhouse - 1900 Clubhouse Dr. - Kings Point Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays - 9 AM to 3 PM. Call (813) 938-8959 between 9 AM and 3 PM on MWF to make an appointment. Sun City Center Shut-ins and Lake Towers Residents Call 634-4200 for appointments. For more information about the AARP tax aide program in Sun City Center, call Marilyn Wilson at 633-5679. In Kings Point, you can call Pete O’Brien at 634-8108 for information. The Tax Club website is http:// mysite.verizon.net/resr3sdp/ scctaxaide/. Perhaps you would like to join in as a volunteer next year? Give Marilyn a call.

SOLID GOLD will join THE DUKES and ELVIS in the Main Tent this year.

OF NATURE, always popular, will be in the Florida Room. Don’t miss exhibitions throughout the campus by other performers.

Performance locations and times will be listed in the schedule distributed by greeters on campus. Make sure FunFest 2013 is on your calendar and tell your friends. Come early so you don’t miss the 9:00 a.m. opening remarks by CA President Ed Barnes and FunFest Chair Susan Muise and the flag raising by the American Legion at the bandstand. For more information, call 813-633-3500.

Pebble Beach Pairs Champions

At the culmination of the Pebble Beach Club’s Pairs (the men’s club of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club) event, two teams were left standing after a knock-out competition that ran over 4 days. ED: It’s been a rough few weeks for Carnival Cruise Line here recently. How was your experience and would you recommend Carnival to others? Joe Conery: “Yes. This was our second cruise on a Carnival ship. There is always lots of activities and entertainment.” ED: What ship were you on and, in addition to the Christmas theme, what were some other

memorable moments on the ship? Joe Conery: “We cruised on the Carnival Freedom. We enjoyed an indoor ‘snowfall’ of flakes made of soap that fell four decks from the top of the atrium while we were singing Christmas carols.” ED: Good deal. Thanks Joe, and thanks as well to you and Shonnee for sending in these great pictures for all of us to enjoy.

SCC welcomes new deputy Jason Castillo recently transferred to 33573 By E. Adam Porter An imposing presence with close-cropped hair and an appraising gaze, Jason Castillo looks every bit a lawman, but that was not the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy’s first career. “Previously I worked for IBM and JP Morgan, a technology job on the server end.” Castillo’s law enforcement career began a little less than a decade ago when his job was outsourced and he found himself with a decision to make. “I wanted to do something that didn’t leave me stuck in an office. Something outside that allowed me to interact with people and offered the satisfaction of having an impact in my community.” And, for Castillo, the community he has the opportunity to serve is a sort of homecoming. “I was born and raised in Ruskin and now I live in the Balm Wimauma area, so I am very familiar with this entire area. Plus, I have family in Sun City Center, so I have a personal connection with that community.” Castillo’s first years in the HCSO were spent patrolling in District 4, which includes everything south of Causeway Boulevard to the county line. “That was mostly in Clair Mel, but I also spent some time in eastern Hillsborough and in the Homeland Security Division at the port of Tampa.”

Jason Castillo is the new HCSO Resource Deputy for Sun City Center and Kings Point

Now that he is back serving residents practically in his own back yard, Castillo said he wants to be a resource for the community in more than just title. “I want to help the residents and business owners here in town. I want to do a good job for them.” To prepare for his transition, Castillo has been riding with former SCC resource deputy, Chris Girard, meeting folks in the community, learning about the law enforcement challenges in this community and getting the lay of the land. When asked what major issues Sun City Center and Kings Point faced, Castillo echoed a familiar

refrain. “The main issues here are fraud and theft. Sometimes people simply forget to lock

their doors or their garages when they leave. Then thieves just come in and take stuff. These crimes of opportunity can often be avoided if residents simply remember to lock their doors. And, when it comes to fraud prevention, reading the information we provide in the papers like yours and coming to the monthly meetings can really make a difference. People need to pay attention, but they also need to know what to look for.” Beginning this month, if you’re out and about in our community, look for Deputy Jason Castillo. If you see him and you have the chance, say hello, shake his hand and welcome him to Sun City Center. After all, who better than a “local boy” out there to watch your back.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson •“It can be tricky to add new keys to a key ring, especially if you don’t have much of a fingernail. I have found a foolproof way to get the key started. Just use a staple remover. It works wonders!” -- T.R. in Indiana • If you have small scratches in your wood furniture, try this old trick: Rub a walnut over dings to cover them up. Or find a matching brown crayon, rub it lightly into the scratch, and finish with a hair dryer held 10 inches away for about 10-15 seconds. It melts the wax of the crayon, and then you can buff it with a soft rag. Any excess is swept away, and the color remains. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. “Where in the World” Wants to Know Hey this is Eddie Dixon, travel correspondent with News of Kings Point. We are excited to be in our second year of the “Where in the World is the News of Kings Point” contest, and each month, we have begun to receive twice as many submissions as we did in year one. We think it is terrific that so many of you are excited about taking your News of Kings Point along with you to so many exotic destinations, and we would love to hear more about your trips. So, beginning this month, we will be publishing stories based on interviews I have done with our Where in the World contestants. In these interviews, our travelers share favorite moments and places, travel tips and recommendations. So, if you are planning to submit your own “Where in the World” photo, when you send it in, please include the following information: • Who all went (full names) • Where did you go? • What time of year did you go? • How long did you stay? • Favorite moments? • Not so favorite moments? • Recommended attractions, food, shopping? And, as always, if you are interested in booking a trip to any of the destinations featured here, contact our friends over at Legendary Journeys to explore your travel options and book your trip. Terry Upson & Robbin Stratton-Upson Robbin Stratton-Upson accompanied her husband, Terry Upson to Mobile, Alabama for a three-month work trip. Terry was supervising a dry dock repair for Florida Tug and Barge. The couple arrived on February 3rd and enjoyed both a local celebration and an international incident. Some of y’all may not know this, but Mobile is the original American home of Mardi Gras, and they through down a pretty good celebration every year… albeit a more family friendly version. Here’s what Robbin had to say: “The locals throw more than beads; I caught stuffed animals including a large Christmas Teddy Bear, moon pies, coins, bags of peanuts, toys, bags of beads, footballs, souvenir cups, and my most prized catch, a voodoo doll!” But the excitement was far from over. While Terry and Robbin were in Mobile, something else was making its way there. Carnival Triumph…and the, as Robbin aptly described, “hordes of press” to cover the story of the illfated cruise ship. That’s a lot of excitement in a couple weeks for the typically sleepy, well relatively sleepy, city of Mobile. For more information about Mardi Gras in Mobile, check out Continued on Page 7

Ask Pete your questions about

prostate cancer Is there any kind of diet that is recommended to prevent prostate cancer? A—We do not know enough about the real cause or causes of this cancer to identify any specific foods as the culprits. We do know that the same diet suggested by the American Heart Association makes the most sense for all people, not just those concerned about prostate cancer. That diet is known as the Mediterranean Diet, and concentrates on lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, fish and chicken, use of olive oil, whole grains. Red meat should be totally eliminated, if possible, as well as highly processed foods, and most milk products. A good place to find this diet (and lots of recipes) is in the book: The New Prostate Cancer Nutrition Book, by Rose and Charles Myers, MD. It is available for $25 from Rivanna Press, (434) 220-3774

Meepers is an adorable little lady who just happens to have feline imunodeficiency Virus. Meepers is a special cat in need of a special home. She was found as a drop off in a feral cat colony that she didn’t belong to. She came to our shelter in March 2010 ready to deliver kittens and she was just a kitten herself. After delivering six beautiful babies she was diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Cats with FIV can live for several years without symptoms. Treatment consists of good nourishment, protection from stress and infectious disease, and management of secondary conditions. Meepers should be in a home with no other cats. The main route of transmitting the disease is through biting and breeding. She has been spayed and is current on vaccines. She needs to be kept indoors because immuno-suppressed cats are more susceptible to infection. In the right environment, Meepers quality of life could be good for many years. DOB: November 2, 2009.

BRH Urologist, Mark Baker, MD First in the Area to Use Robotic Assisted Surgery With FireFly Fluorescence & Zero Ischemia Technique

Brandon Regional Hospital announces that urologist Mark Baker, MD is the first surgeon in the area to use FireFly Fluorescence imaging to remove kidney tumors with the da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System for kidney cancer while leaving the healthy portion of the kidney in place. FireFly technology allows for partial nephrectomies which allows for the surgeon to remove just the diseased portion as opposed to the entire kidney. The FireFly Fluorescence Imaging System allows surgeons to see exactly where the healthy kidney stops and the unhealthy kidney (tumor) begins by illuminating the healthy tissue using a special dye that is injected intravenously during the surgery. Brandon Regional Hospital’s urologists can perform the surgery more safely and with less blood loss, resulting in a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery. Using the FireFly Fluorescence Imaging along with zero ischemia method, Dr. Baker is able to carefully map and remove the tumor without stopping the blood flow, maximizing renal function without compromising cancer control. “In the past we had to pack ice around kidneys or make a hypothermic where you would basically deep freeze the kidney or where you would operate on the kidney and have no blood flow. Now we use warm ischemia: the kidney is still staying the same temperature with blood flow to it. Using FireFly Fluorescence Imaging we get fluorescent contrast and we know that the artery we are clamping is the same one where the mass is and it allows you to remove that mass while still allowing blood flow to other parts of the kidney,” said Dr. Mark Baker.

Adogable Pets

Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy is now a safe and viable alternative to even laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, providing the equivalent early oncological outcomes and comparable morbidity to a traditional laparoscopic approach. Moreover, robot assisted partial nephrectomy appears to offer the advantages of decreased hospital stay as well as significantly less inoperative blood loss and shorter warm ischemia time the latter of which may help to provide maximal preservation of renal reserve. Dr. Baker has now performed several robotic assisted partial nephrectomies. It is important to know that kidney cancer is seventh most common type of cancer and reports are rapidly growing. Thirty thousand people suffered kidney cancer in 1995 and 11,000 deaths were reported. According to Dr. Baker this is now on the rise due to obesity and smoking. “In 2013, 65,000 people will be estimated to have kidney cancer with 13,800 anticipated deaths,” said Dr. Baker. “If we find the kidney mass before it has had a chance to spread, it is curable 90% of the time…as long as we get it when it is confined to the kidney,” added Dr. Baker. Dr. Baker is board certified in urology. He received his medical degree from the University or Arkansas for Medical Sciences and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. From 2000 to 2005 Dr. Baker finished a general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of South Florida, which included training at Tampa General Hospital, James A. Haley VA, Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, and Moffitt Cancer Center. He has been in private practice in Brandon and Sun City Center since August 2005.

Emergency Squad Receives $5000 Grant

The SCC Emergency Squad has just received a grant from the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Oversight Prevention Program to prepare and implement a fall prevention education program in the SCC community. Last year the Squad was called to over Picture from left to right: Bev LeDoux, EMT and 6,500 emergencies. Robin Watt, EMT. Approximately 40% of these calls were for falls. Fortunately, many people only need assistance getting back on their feet or into a chair. However, all too often, those who have fallen once will experience a second or third fall, usually with injuries. As part of our mission of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”, we’d like to see this number reduced. The Squad’s Fall Prevention Team is led by Robin Watt, EMT and includes Jenny Casey, retired nurse and EMT, Beverly LeDoux, EMT, Mary Soja, retired nurse and Professor of Nursing, Margo Warner, retired Physical Therapist and Russ Girghenti, EMR. The group will be making fall prevention presentations throughout the community to clubs, church groups, and Home Owners Associations. If you are interested in scheduling a presentation for your organization, please call the Squad at 813-633-1411.

Association of Naval Aviation Members and Guests Heard Talk by COL Luke Lloyd, USA (Ret.)

Submitted by Barry J Dyer, LT USN (Ret.), The Silver Osprey Squadron

On Friday, February 8, 2013, at the Freedom Plaza Club in Sun City Center, Silver Osprey Squadron members and their guests got a general view of the political and religious goals of Islam. Col Lloyd retired from the US Army following 30 years of service. He served in Airborne Infantry and Armor combat units as well as Intelligence (Defense Intelligence Agency). While in the military, he learned the Arabic language. As a civilian, he earned a Masters Degree in Arab Studies from the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. While an intelligence officer, he specialized in the “Middle East”. He is also the author of a book entitled, “Out of Darkness”. For more detail, you may wish to visit his website at www.lukelloyd.com.

Col Lloyd’s wife, Jeanne, noticed that there were quite a few women in the audience. She spoke for a few minutes about Afghan women and summed up her remarks by recommending two novels by an American of Afghan descent: “The Kite Runner” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. On the lighter side, knowing that his audience was mostly aviators, Col Lloyd said that he did have aviation experience. He was either riding in airplanes or jumping out of them! While based in Saudi Arabia, he traveled by air extensively, much of it in an Air Force Douglas C-54 Skymaster (Same as a US Navy R5D and derived from the civilian DC-4 airliner). Col Lloyd did his jumping earlier in his army career while he was an Airborne Infantry Officer. His presentation was very informative and well received by the audience. Luncheon meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at the Plaza Club. The exception would be the occasional visit to an air show or aviation museum. Prior military service is not required in order to attend. All that is required is an interest in military aviation. For further information, Silverosprey@yahoo.com or visit the Sun City Center website at http://www.suncitycenter. org select Activities and use the drop down menu to select Veterans.

Mary Petro Fund Completes One Year By Phyllis Hodges David O’Dell, Program Coordinator of the Mary Petro Fund for Food and Medicine, reports that 92 Sun City Center and Kings Points households received $80,532 during the program’s first year that ended February 6 ($61,206 for food and $19,326 for medicine). The program is funded by the earnings of the $2.3 million fortune of Mary Petro, a Sun City Center resident who died in 2009. We don’t know much about Mary Petro. She had no close living relatives and not even the closest acquaintances and neighbors knew she “had money.” She lived in a modest house and her frugal spending habits included buying clothes at thrift shops and enjoying free coffee and cookies at local businesses. The one thing we’re certain of is her deep compassion for people in need. Ten years before her death, Mary worked with the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center to have earnings from her entire estate fund a perpetual program “To

Mary Petro Fund Partners With C.A.R.E.

Ruskin’s C.A.R.E. Animal Shelter recently partnered with the Mary Petro Fund for Food and Medicine to provide free pet food to people who receive food and medicine assistance. The “Keep Pets Healthy” initiative is sponsored by, and is funded through, a generous grant to C.A.R.E. from the Banfield Charitable Foundation and will last until the grant monies are depleted. For information on the pet food program, call Don Hinderliter at 645-2273.

provide help to SCC and KP residents who are in dire need of assistance with food and/or medicine.” This has become the program’s Mission Statement. When Mary died, the Foundation set in motion talks with various organizations about administering the program. United Community Church was chosen and a task force

of seven worked ten months to set up the program and select an administrator. UCC provides office space and the Foundation pays all operating costs. David O’Dell exudes compassion and commitment when talking about the program. “I am continually surprised by the number of people who need help and suspect there are many more who would qualify if they just knew about it. Many are embarrassed to ask for help but are encouraged to apply by neighbors and friends. During the qualification process, we also counsel clients about other help available,” he says. When asked about the 20 volunteers from UCC and other local churches, he said that they all see this as a way to do meaningful volunteer

work because they are making a difference in people’s lives. To qualify, taxable income must be less than $16,335 for an individual or $22,065 for a couple. They must be legal, full-time residents of Sun City Center or Kings Point and must have a CA or KP badge. If a person qualifies for assistance with food costs, he or she is given a gift card to a local grocery store. If help with medicine costs is needed, the payment goes directly to the pharmacy. David and his staff urge anyone interested (for themselves or a friend/neighbor) to either stop in the office on the east side of UCC at La Jolla and N. Pebble Beach during operating hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, or call 634-8306 for an appointment or information.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING

See if you can make six spades on this deal looking at all 52 cards. Given the opening diamond lead plus the favorable location of the diamonds and the heart king, this might seem easy. But be forewarned -- it’s no simple task. The most obvious line is to win East’s king of diamonds with the ace, cross to the spade king and lead a heart to the ten. Next, cash the ace of hearts, dropping East’s king, then return to the jack of spades and discard your club on the heart queen. Here’s where the trouble begins. If you draw the missing

trumps, you’ll eventually lose two diamond tricks to East. If instead you lead a diamond and finesse the eight, West will ruff, and you’ll also lose the diamond ten to East’s jack at the end. But the contract can be made. Moreover, the winning line of play can be reasoned out. When East shows out of trumps at trick two and then turns up with just the K-x of hearts, his distribution becomes marked as 0-2-6-5 (his bidding plus West’s deuce-ofdiamonds lead, which must be a singleton, confirm this diagnosis). East must also have one or both top club honors. Proceeding on this assumption, declarer plays the first five tricks as described above. But at trick six, he discards the diamond eight instead of a club on the queen of hearts! He then runs his trumps, coming down to the Q-10 of diamonds and seven of clubs. Dummy keeps the Q-5 of clubs and jack of hearts, while East is reduced to the J-9 of diamonds and ace of clubs. South now leads his club, and East has to win and return a diamond to declarer’s Q-10, handing him the contract. Note that it doesn’t help East to jettison his ace of clubs in order to avoid being endplayed. In that case, South leads a club toward dummy, and West must then concede the slam-going trick to dummy’s queen after he takes his king. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By Samantha Weaver

• It was British author Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” • Those who study such things say that if you drink 100 cups of coffee in a row, it’s likely to kill you. • You might have heard that George Washington’s dentures were made of wood, but in fact, they were made of hippopotamus ivory. • In 1900, a prairie dog colony was found in Texas. That’s not surprising -- prairie dogs are fairly common out West -- but this colony was unique. Researchers say it was the largest colony ever discovered, providing a home to 400 million prairie dogs and stretching over 25,000 square miles. • If you’ve read “Alice in Wonderland” or seen any of the numerous adaptations of it, you probably know about the Mad Hatter. But did you ever wonder why he was mad? It seems that haberdashers (those who make hats) at one time used mercury to cure the felt they needed for the hats. Long-term exposure to mercury causes madness, hence the phrase “mad as a hatter.” • Martin Van Buren was the first president to be born a citizen of the United States. • To earn a world record, a woman named Sonya Thomas ate 65 hard-boiled eggs in 6 minutes, 40 seconds. • The female long-tailed shrew gives birth to exactly one litter of pups in her lifetime -- and promptly dies. • Our modern word “salary” comes from the Latin “salarium,” or “salt money.” Salarium was the monthly wages given to Roman soldiers in ancient times -- paid in salt. Thought for the Day: “Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.” -- Jose Maria de E a de Queiroz © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
