Marching Into Spring

By E. Adam Porter, Editor in Chief, News of Kings Point Much of the country is blanketed in snow and the mercury read 28 at my Little House on the River this morning, but here I am thinking about spring. That’s the magic of a monthly publication, I guess. Knowing you will read this after the cold front has passed and Florida has once again blessed us with its special brand of late winter Chamber of Commerce Sunshine. Here I am tapping away, musing about spring, while my family and friends out of state—and yours too, I’ll wager—are dressing like that kid in A Christmas Story who can’t put his arms down and dreading another trip outside with the snow shovel. Regardless of what late season shenanigans Jack Frost is up to here and elsewhere, the Official Start of Spring is right around the corner. For those scoring at home, that’s Friday, March 20. The spring equinox and the first day of the season in which we celebrate rebirth, resurrection, green growing things…and baseball. Spring! The very essence of the word implies energy and progress, movement and change. We can spring into action with a spring in our step. We consider the wonderful things about Tiggers and all their bouncy, flouncy fun. We get all twitterpated, for the first time or all over again. With all this frivolity comes an underlying irony. March is named for the Roman god Mars, who was, paradoxically, the god of both war and agriculture. It was the first month of the Roman year, and the season in which they began simultaneously planting food and killing people including, of course, Julius Caesar (March 15). March is a bit bipolar in the modern day as well. March is both Women’s History Month and Colorectal Cancer Month. I’d

wax philosophical about that, but who wants to go there? The weather is way too nice not to get outside and play. Speaking of, March kicks off two major American athletic traditions, Major League Baseball spring training games begin in earnest, and the annual basketball Armageddon known as NCAA March Madness turns college hoops into Must See TV. Spring is also the season for Easter sunrise services, Cadbury eggs and candy hunts. Kids spilling plastic grass onto actual grass while hunting for errant jellybeans. For Passover, which begins on April 3, and Lent, which began back on February 18 and is probably getting tough for lots of folks right about now. While religious observances and athletic allegiances may both inspire and divide us, March is also the month to celebrate some unifying historic milestones. On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the Union, and, in 1931, The Star Spangled Banner was adopted as our National Anthem. So, no matter what cap you wear to that spring training game, the song we sing before we “Play ball!” was made official in March. On March 10, 1775, Daniel Boone decided to take a long walk across Kentucky. Ten years later, Thomas Jefferson sailed off to France. On March 11, 1942, Douglas MacArthur told the Japanese, “I shall return.” And did he ever. So much more to celebrate in March than just the weather. But do we really need more than that? Look out that window! March is the reason people visiting Florida choose to stay, and enjoying that everyday blessing is good enough to put a spring in my step. At least, it will be. Right now, it’s still nippy outside. But the sun’s out, and, if you’ll pardon me, I have to go uncover my plants.

lawn,” and festivities will include a farmer’s market, live musical entertainment, food trucks, opportunities to connect with some of Kings Point’s many clubs and groups and much more! The 25,000-square-foot building once housed headquarters for the developer of Kings Point. Soon, its fitness floor will have 15 treadmills, 14 other cardio units and 30 strength stations. A fully appointed spa and salon will offer professional services. Meeting rooms will be used for everything from lectures to cooking classes. The official Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the 2020 Centre will be held at 11 a.m. followed by small group tours that will continue until 2 p.m. Kings Point residents and guests as well as Sun City Center Community Association members are welcome to attend.

Hospice Comes to SCC

By Agnes Baker, Photo by John Bowker The first hospice legislation, introduced in 1974, was not acted upon. However, Connecticut Hospice, Inc. opened in spite of this setback and, with assistance from the National Cancer Institute, a program was established to study home care for the terminally ill. Pleased with the results, the NCA continued the study with this project ending in 1980. Congress acted a number of times to enhance and expand hospice care. In 1986, the Medicare Hospice Benefits were made permanent and included entry in military hospitals or under CAMPUS. Additionally, hospice care was included in the veterans’ package. In 1993, the President included hospice in the basic health package as a nationally guaranteed benefit and it is now an accepted part of the health care program. We must give credit to Florida’s Congressman Sam Gibbons for his tireless efforts working with the Medicare systems and with the veterans’ groups to assure the best benefits allowable were introduced and, in most cases, passed. The number of hospices participating in the Medicare program grew from 31 in 1984 to 1,288 in 1993. Where do these facts lead us?

Right here, folks! Right here to our community where, in 1994, a group of dedicated individuals organized as “Friends of Hospice Auxiliary of Sun City Center.” Several speakers explained the need for a concerted effort in obtaining the funds needed to support the facility and Sun City Center resident, Betty Pettersson, spoke of her visit to an established hospice house in Venice, Florida. This began a year of educating their neighbors about hospice and the need to raise funds to support this special program. With speakers outlining the benefits of having a hospice facility in Sun City Center, this enthused group, under the guidance of first president Joyce Mather began working towards a required 1.1 million dollars, which seemed to be an impossible task, but the funds started coming in, albeit slowly. Then, a tremendous boost in funding and to lift up sagging spirits was a large bequest from the estate of Kathryn LeBeau!

Special thanks to Ray and Ann Purcell, who became known as the “Dynamic Duo” as they worked tirelessly to assure the construction of the South County Hospice House, and to Sam Kupper, Clare Falkner, Susanne Proch, Ruth Anderson, Sarah Buckwalter, Eleanor Gladiszewski, Rebecca Kull, Betty Pettersson, Dick May, and Lee Albrecht, first secretary. If we missed any, our apologies. The artist’s rendering was completed on January 26, 1999, and construction began in January 2001 at the site on American Eagle Drive. Construction was completed and the new facility was dedicated on August 9, 2001. Hundreds came out tour the facility and listen to Ms. Kathy Fernandez, President/CEO of LifePath Hospice who, in her speech, called this “A Dream Come True,” giving recognition to the many volunteers who had worked so tirelessly for over six years. Oh, Yes—a true labor of love come to fruition thanks to a dedicated group of Sun City Center Residents.

HEART RACING to keep up?

Our AFib and Heart Rhythm Centers take matters of the heart seriously… and you should, too. You know your heart…and you know when something just doesn’t feel right. It could be a potentially serious problem – Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). While AFib is one of the most common cardiac irregularities, its diagnosis indicates that blood isn’t moving properly through the heart, which increases the risk of stroke and congestive heart failure. Listen to your heart today. Contact HCA West Florida at 855-614-7290 for a physician referral to see a cardiac specialist near you. What are symptoms of AFib? • Shortness of breath

Fatigue or dizziness

Tea Time

When you have a health emergency in your home, there are several documents that will assist paramedics and EMT’s in determining how best to assist you. The Vial of Life may not be an actual vial, but contains important medical documents that can assist medics when they are assessing your health. These documents include your list of current medications, allergies, and previous health history. If you are computer literate, you can make this list, save it and update it on your computer. Once that is done, fold it up, put it in an empty medication bottle and place it inside the refrigerator door. This is where medics will look for that information. Too much information to put in a bottle? Attach it to the refrigerator with a refrigerator magnet. If you do not use a computer, stop by the Emergency Squad and pick up a Vial of Life at our front desk. This bottle contains pink and blue forms – one for the lady of the house and one for the man. Fill them out as completely as possible, but your medications, history and allergies are the most critical pieces of information. Make sure this information gets updated as your health changes. When the Emergency Squad responds to a call for someone who is “unresponsive,” we will ask the spouse or caregiver if the patient has a DNR. What is a DNR form? A Do Not Resuscitate Order is an important document to aid EMT’s, paramedics, doctors and nurses in identifying those people who do not wish to be resuscitated in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest. When a patient has suffered a cardiac or respiratory arrest and is essentially dead, a DNR means that CPR will not be initiated. It does not mean that care will not be provided if a patient is having an active heart attack and is still breathing. To be a legal document, the DNR must be on yellow paper, properly signed by a competent patient or their representative and a licensed Florida physician. It should be easy to find and available at a moments notice. Ask your doctor if their office has DNR forms, stop by the Squad to pick up a form or you can go to the State website at: http://www.floridahealth.gov/about-the-department-of-health/ about-us/patient-rights-and-safety/do-not-resuscitate/index.html

By Rosie Korfant, Activities Coordinator JSA Medical Group After good ol’ H2O, tea is the most popular drink on the planet. Some research suggests it’s even healthier than water. Tea is no longer just to serve grannies on their porch or to our English friends. Carrie Ruxton, PhD, a dietician and tea expert in the UK, cites studies that suggest one cup of tea can hold up to five times more antioxidants than any fruit or veggie. The list of benefits is staggering: keeps your heart healthy; burns fat, wards off weight gain, prevents certain cancers, sharpens your mind, and helps your body beat the effects of aging and stress. So, it’s really tea time any time! Diane L. McKay, PhD with Tufts University School of Nutrition in Boston says: “check out your tea mug.” Could that cuppa steamin’ stuff really do all this? BRAIN: may fight Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. BONES: protects against bone loss. HEART: study of 40k adult green tea drinkers showed 31% less heart disease. SKIN: EGCG in green tea has anticancer properties to help prevent skin tumors. An interesting point for me is that green tea serves up the EGCG antioxidant that also helps decrease fat absorption and contributes to weight loss. Green tea, especially, has been proven to increase endurance during exercise. (Whoo Whee that pumps up my gym workout motivation a lot!) Color me healthy—in more ways than one! Tea color signifies their particular benefits: white=anticancer properties, green=healthy antioxidants, oolong=boosts metabolism, black=decreases cardiovascular risks, herbal=therapeutic (calming and relaxing.) Green tea, hot or cold, may be the most beneficial drink a fitnessminded person can swallow besides water. According to worldwide research, green tea: protects against many types of cancer, lowers cholesterol, and reduces blood platelet stickiness, thereby helping to stop hardening of the arteries. The studies rave on and on about the variety of benefits a few cups of green tea a day have on our bodies. Interesting to note is that tea bags contain the same beneficial properties as loose leaf tea. (Thank goodness, I can swap out that well-used, but ineffective, tea strainer I’ve been using for years!) A word of caution: while all these benefits of drinking tea are plentiful, caffeine may have adverse effects when combined with medications. Speak to a qualified health care provider for recommendations. SOURCES: Carrie Ruston, PhD, a dietician and tea expert in the UK, Diane L. By Robin Watt Marty Mallak moved to Sun City Center in September of 1994 and joined the Squad the very next month. She met Tom in 1997 while she was in EMT school and they married within a year. Soon after, Marty convinced Tom to join the Squad where he became an ambulance driver. Unfortunately, after two hip replacements, duty as an ambulance driver became too difficult and he became a wheelchair van driver. Marty worked as an EMT until 2008 when two knee replacements kept her off of the ambulance. It was then that Chief Christine Patrick asked her to become Captain of Team 5. She served there for two years and then she also became a Wheelchair van driver. She has since switched to dispatching. Like many of our volunteers, Marty and Tom found that as their health changed, there were still other volunteer jobs they could do to serve the community. Marty has held an abundance of positions including Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief. Tom, she says, has consistently supported her 110%. Tom decided to retire from the Squad at the end of January after 17-plus years of faithful and devoted service as a driver. Marty still serves as dispatcher and Asst. Captain on Team 5. Together they have served their community for over 38 years. It is an honor and privilege to have such a dedicated and committed couple on the Squad. Thank you for your service and Tom, you will be missed.

Our Lady’s Pantry Needs Your Help

By Paula Lickfeldt w/ Tom Bullaro Our Lady’s Pantry, in Wimauma, is hopeful of expanding so the people of the area will be better served. In 1999, when the food pantry first opened, 20 families weekly were given food. The number of families given food in 2005 broke 100 a week and, in 2014, 195 families a week were fed. Each family is given 60-80 pounds of food a week. A new building with more space to keep the food, both perishable and nonperishable, and to better serve the community, is desperately needed. The majority of the money used to buy the food comes from The Knights of Columbus, the Nearly New Shop and the Community Foundation. Using the donated dollars, Our Lady’s Pantry is able to purchase food from “Feed America Tampa Bay” for 18 cents a pound. Food is also donated by many area groups and organizations. Tom Bullaro, co-director of the Pantry along with his wife Anita, says that Our Lady’s Pantry has been serving the community since 1999, with more households coming for food all the time. “Thanks to the generosity of this community, we distributed just under 9,000 big boxes of groceries to the 1,100 families registered in Our Lady’s Pantry over the past 12 months. Multiplied week after week, we are providing some dependable relief against hunger for large

Construction can begin when half of the funding $75,000 is in hand. A total of $22,355 had been donated thus far.

numbers of children and adults.” “Regrettably, we are greatly limited by space. The classroom where we work is only 1,152 square feet, in which we stack and organize literally tons of food for our families (143 tons in 2014). Included in this space are seven stand-alone freezers and two refrigerators. “The new building will have a bigger parking lot, allowing a better flow of traffic for cars coming and going, and people walking here and there. It will, therefore, be safer for everyone.”

According to Bullaro, the new Pantry, which will be 50 feet by 80 feet, for a total of 4,000 square feet, also will be located on the grounds of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission. SET Meeting Monday, March 9: Dr. Peter Rubec on Soil-less Agriculture

MON. Mar 9 - Science, Engineering and Technology Club meeting. 7:30 p.m. in the Caper Room, Atrium Building, 954 North Course Lane. There is no cost for guests; anyone interested in science and technology is invited. With more farm land being used for houses, factories, and roads, how will we be able to grow food for an expanding world population? Dr. Peter Rubec, a research scientist at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will present “Is Soil-less Agriculture the Solution to Looming Food Crisis?” Hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics will be the focus of the possible solutions to meet the potential of a food crisis due to severe drought and over-development of farmland.

Sun City Center Registered Nurses Club

by Jane Scully The Kings Point Quilters were treated to a fabulous trunk show presented by Juanita Yeager. Juanita comes from a large family and was accustomed to seeing her mother and grandmother working on various sewing projects, mainly necessities for family members and the household. Like many of us who have tried different crafts, she too tried her hand at many, including pottery, ceramics, basket making, etc. When her children left the nest, Juanita decided to get back into sewing and discovered quilting which soon became her forever craft. She started with the basics like the rest of us, but soon became bored with that and began experimenting with more challenging technics. Listening to Juanita the quilters could envision themselves trying some of the crafts she had tried, heard her family tales. Then Juanita opened her trunk and displayed one masterpiece after another, each one larger and more vivid than the previous one. Mouths dropped open and there was a chorus of wows throughout the room. It only got better from here. Juanita’s quilts are diverse, large scale compositions using dramatic use of color and range from realistic to abstract. All of her designs are painted on the fabric, complimented by very intricate machine quilting. She dyes her own fabric, completes about ten quilts a year including one or two commissions. Her largest commissioned quilt measures five feet by twelve feet and is displayed in the lobby of Floyd Memorial Hospital, New Albany, Indiana. fill up very fast! Sign up as soon as possible. With each signup page there is a sheet to put your name on a wait list. If we have enough names on the wait list we try to schedule another class.

By Robbin Stratton-Upson The first Irish Connection party for 2015, on the 18 of January, found 64 packing the Caper Room of the Atrium Building. Everyone dined on finger foods/hors d’oeuvres, organized by Kathy Lyons’ social committee, after a warm welcome by President Paddy Cooney. A short of the SCC 2014 Golf Car Parade, featuring the IC’s winning carousel entry, was shown with special recognition of Larry Vaughan and Ian Donnelly and a request by Larry for any new volunteers or ideas for our future participation. An excellent musical tour of Ireland travelogue was thoroughly enjoyed by all which covered the entire island with Dr. Roy Johnston, who was born in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, discussing how interesting travel to Belfast is today with its rich historic culture. Anyone who is Irish, of Irish extraction, or anyone who has an interest in Ireland, are welcome to join the Irish Connection Club which was formed with the object to promote all things Irish, including Culture, History and Music. For membership information, please call Joan Weening 813.633.5274 and for the latest online news, see the Irish Connection website, recently created by member Jack Lyons, at www.sccirishconnection.com.

‘66 Chevelle Super Sport Cruiser of the Month

A pristine and powerful 1966 Chevelle Super Sport owned by Jerry Dixon of Sun City Center is the Roamin’ Oldies February cruiser of the month. The Super Sport was a serious muscle car right from the factory, with a 396-cubic inch V8 and an available 4-speed transmission. Jerry’s car, with the engine upgraded to 496 cubic inches and matched to a five-speed Tremec transmission, is a great deal stronger. A long-time racer and enthusiast, Jerry said he’s been looking for 15 years for the just-right ’66 Chevelle. The one he found only three months ago already is a show winner, and looks to be a formidable competitor should he decide to go back to racing. The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of every month in the Apollo Beach Winn-Dixie Plaza on US41, with a rain date the following Thursday. There is no charge for spectators or participants, who vote to select the cruiser of the month. About 100 of the area’s finest antique and collectible cars often take part, accompanied by classic oldies music played by DJ Joey Ferrante. The event is sponsored by Thompson’s Auto Parts and Sun City Center Funeral Home. For information, call Chet at 813-842-1511.

Cameroon Missionaries Speak at Trinity

Trinity Baptist Church, in Sun City Center, recently hosted a visit by Missionaries Tim and Amy Moline, who serve in Cameroon, West Africa. Cameroon is one-third Muslim and two-thirds Christian. English and French are the official languages, complimented by some 270 tribal group languages. The Molines serve in an English speaking area. Cameroon is one of the most corrupt countries in the world and that is a constant challenge for them and the residents of the country. They presented an overview of their work at the evening service and explained that their mission is to multiply Christian leaders and strengthen churches. They serve at the Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary (CBTS), which provides education from primary school through the Master’s degree level and has 250 students per year. CBTS trains Cameroonian missionaries, who serve in remote villages and reach thousands of people. A lot of new churches are being started and there is a real need to strengthen and grow them. A reception was held after the service, which provided more time for the Moline’s to discuss their work and to answer questions from the attendees. For more information about the church, please call 634.4228 or visit the website at www.trinitybaptistscc.com.

Saint Anne Dedicates New Facility

The weekend of February 14 and 15 marked a new milestone for the Saint Anne Food Pantry, located on the church campus at 106 11th Ave. N.E. in Ruskin. Parishioners and community representatives joined in the celebration as South Hillsborough’s newest facility was blessed by Very Rev. John F. McEvoy, Pastor of St. Anne Catholic Church, on Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning. In honor of the celebration, Food Pantry volunteers from the Saint Anne outreach ministry prepared a light reception following both observances. The 4,000 square foot facility was filled to capacity on both days. The Food Pantry Committee and volunteer staff members have worked very diligently over the past four years to make this vision a reality. This accomplishment is truly a community event. The donations of both long-time and new parishioners, and the very generous contributions and grants of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, The Simmons Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center, and The Interfaith Council have resulted in a debt-free building. The greater South Shore Community is ultimately the recipient of this cooperative effort. More information about Saint Anne Catholic Church is available on its website: www. SaintAnneRuskin.org.

Redeemer Lutheran Women to Meet

The women’s organization of Redeemer Lutheran Church (Women of the ELCA) will meet on Wednesday, March 18 beginning with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. The 10 a.m. program will be a presentation by Sigi Espino on Kuna Handcrafts. The Kuna are an Indian tribe living in the San Blas archipel of Panama. Today there are about 40 to 45,000 of them. The traditional dress of a Kuna woman consists of a patterned blue cotton wrappen skirt, red and yellow headscarf, arm and leg beads, gold nose ring, earrings, and the many layered and finely sewn mola panel blouse, the Mola. The artistry of a mola reflects a synthesis of traditional Kuna culture with influences of the modern world. Mola art developed when Kuna women began access to store bought yard material, mainly colored cotton. Mola designs were first inspired by geometric body paintings, by Kuna mythology, legends, and by nature. In modern times they are influenced by posters, political adds, commercial labels, books and TV cartoons as well as daily living. Samples of Molas and what can be made out of them will be shown in the presentation. Everyone is invited to attend. For more information, call 813-634-1292.

SCC Swim Dancers Welcome Everyone to their “WHODUNIT “ Aquatic Show

By Dana Ellerbrock When Erma Bombeck was asked what she would change if she had her life to live over, she offered some musings and ended with “given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it...look at it and really see it...try it on..live it...exhaust it and never give that minute back until there was nothing left of it!” Well, that pretty much sums up the Sun City Center Swim Dancers and their preparation for the 2015 annual synchronized swim show that will be performed in the Atrium indoor lap pool, 961 North Course Lane, on Saturday, March 14, at 2 p.m. Sue Muise, known as Susan to everyone else in Sun City except the swim dancers, developed the concept for the show on the nights she could not sleep. She created a “WHODUNIT” murder mystery plot at the pool. The investigation would be influenced by famous crime scene detectives, familiar policemen and lawyers, with a murder mystery writer thrown in for good measure. The swim dancers loved the story when presented last spring. First, they made Sue the Show Director, then everyone took some aspect of the show and ran with it. The swim dancers reviewed hundreds of movie and television theme songs that applied to the plot. The gals who volunteered to choreograph a swim number, selected a song and designed a swim routine constructed from familiar synchronized swim figures. Most of the theme songs in this category are instrumentals, no words, like the theme from Pink Panther, and the tune from Law and Order. Lovely music to listen to, twice as hard to swim to, with no words as clues, the whole number requires the swimmers to count. More than half the songs are instrumental, and the count has to be perfect if the swimming is to be synchronized! When the swimmers are not perfecting swim routines, they are designing and creating costumes that will take the abuse of water and not restrict movement. Sewing hands are reconstructing thrift store finds and new fabrics into criminal system costumes, knitting hands are clinking together creative hats, craft hands are fabricating props, shopping hands are searching for accessories and measuring hands are fitting all of the above to coral swimsuit covered bodies. Non-swimmers too are pulled into the current of activity. The audio engineers at the Atrium installed new speakers at the pool, enhancing the music played plus the sound delivery of John Bowker, a professional announcer, who offered to return for this year’s show as the Master of Ceremonies. Joe Elam, the lost tourist from last year’s show, is offering his theatrical talent this year as Inspector Steve McGarrett (Hawaii Five-0) who just happens to be on vacation in Sun City Center from Hawaii. Former swimmer and creative genius, Ilona Merritt, is generating all the graphic designs for the show, from posters, to tickets to programs. Husbands and friends are playing music during practice, taking photographs and videos, making props, and running errands. If that isn’t enough activity, the Swim Dancers have invited another senior synchronized swim team from Palm Harbor, the Synchro-Belles to join in the swim fun. They are bringing their Synchro-Stars, ages 7-9, who will swim to the music of Peter Gunn. Hot off the press tickets will be available at the ticket kiosk for a donation of $3 on March 9-13 (M-F) from 9 a.m. to noon. Swim dancers will also have tickets and any remaining tickets will be available at the door. The hour-long show will be filled with style and grace and fun and mischief!

The Scotch Mixed Doubles Tournament, A Debut Success

In all the fun there was some very serious pool playing going on.

By James Paddock Laughter and good times rocked the pool room at the Kings Point North Clubhouse. With six pool tables and plenty of seating for players and observers, the Kings Point pool room has continued to develop into a popular hangout for many Kings Point residents, popular enough, in fact, that in addition to twice-a-month regular 8-ball tournaments, a once-a-month Scotch Mixed Doubles Tournament has been added. With the billiard club now exceeding 225 members– over 60 of them women–it just seemed like the next logical step. Under the tireless direction of Alan Hahn and Neil McAllister the first monthly Scotch Mixed

Doubles Tournament was held on Thursday, January 22. The players, seven male/ female teams showed up, many early to practice in hopes of being named the very first mixed doubles champions. Not only had none of the participants ever played in Scotch Mixed Doubles, for most, it was their first pool tournament of any kind. As a result there was a lot of time spent on 8-Ball rules and Scotch Mixed Doubles rules and procedures and answering questions from the nervous players. Finally, in the spirit of “Drivers, start your engines!” coins were flipped, pool sticks chalked and balls racked. The competition began. Nancy Baron and Daryl

Scotch Mixed Doubles Participants: (L-R) Mary & Ron Ihrke, Nancy Baron & Daryl Baugher, Mary & Dick Ihrke, Nancy Burke & Kurt Hoffmann, Sharon Baremore & Alan Goodyear, Muriel Legendre & Bob Krok, Ann Reckley & Neil McAllister.

Baugher, in an exciting finish, prevailed over Sharon Baremore and Alan Goodyear to take the honor of first ever, Kings Point Scotch Mixed Doubles Champions. The next Scotch Mixed Doubles

competition will be held on the third Thursday of each month thereafter. Be sure to put it on your calendars and watch for signup information in the billiard room. Even if you don’t wish to play, it is fun to watch.

Annual Meeting

On February 9th, at Caloosa Golf and Country Club’s annual meeting, President John Tormoehlen (center) congratulated Barb Struble (left) treasurer on her report that for the 36th year the club had a financial surplus and looks favorably to an equally successful 2015. The 125 members in attendance were also happy with Vicki Frank's (right) membership report that with their help, Caloosa, the only member owned golf club in Sun City Center and debt free, had to date welcomed 68 new members.

New Members Welcomed

All 200 members in attendance, at Caloosa golf and Country Club’s annual Wine and Cheese party, welcomed 25 of the 68 new members to the only debt free equity golf club in Sun City Center. John Tormoehlen, Club President, introduced Vicki Franks, Membership Director, who then asked each of the new members to introduce themselves and share a little about themselves and their impressions of Caloosa. Everyone was pleased to hear how much they were enjoying a fine golf course, golf mixers every Friday and various social activities. New members in attendance, seated from left, Charles and Carol Schindler, Jack Stevens, Jim and Karen Thomas, Dave and Deb Schulenburg, Lou and Bobbie Cesarek, Dave and Mary Murphy, Ann Mohin, Patricia Paterson, Wade and Elaine Hoffman, Paul and Phyllis McGrath, Darrel and Linda Price, Andrea Long, Tom and Suz Perusse, Paul Stammen, Jim and Kathleen Kistler.

Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club News

By Linda Hawken On one of the windiest days of the winter so far, intrepid lawn bowlers from Sun City Center, Sarasota, Sun ‘n Fun (Sarasota), Lakeland, Mount Dora, Maple Leaf Golf & Country Club (Port Charlotte) and Clearwater took part in the annual MacWilliams Mixed Pairs Tournament, played in honor of Bert & “Eve” MacWilliams. With rain predicted all day, they were fortunate that the windy conditions Second place went to Phil blew all rain clouds away until late Griffin & Chris Heller of Sun City in the day when play was finished. Center LBC. Thirty-two teams were entered and played three games of ten ends each. At the end of that time, four teams had won three games and went into a sudden death playoff to determine the top four places. In the top four were the Sun City Center team of Phil Griffin (Skip) and Chris Heller (Lead) who played off against Maureen O’Brien and Andre Bessette of Sarsota LBC, winning their four-end game to advance into the finals. The other two teams, both from Sarasota LBC, were Stan Bacon (Skip) and Judy Bacon (Lead) against Peter Bunce (Skip) and Janet Bunce (Lead). Having won their semi-final games, Phil & Chris took on Peter & Janet for the top two places while Maureen & Stan’s teams played off for third and fourth places. In the end, Peter & Janet got the better of Phil & Chris to win the tournament with Maureen & Andre in third place and Stan & Judy in fourth. Other winners were: 5th: Cal (Skip) and Val (Lead) Bechard of Sarsota; 6th: Jim Byrne (Skip) & Kathy Gonnella (Lead) of Sun City Center and with a one-game high score Terry Taylor (Skip) and Judy Anderson (Lead) of Sarasota. Congratulations to all who placed in this competition and to those who didn’t as well, for soldiering on in some of the most adverse weather conditions, with the wind affecting the draw of many of the bowls delivered. The MacWilliams Tournament is held in honour of two of Sun City Center’s - and America’s - best and admired lawn bowlers from the past who both played to international levels over many years. Originally from Cleveland, they made their retirement home in Clearwater where this tournament is held every other year, alternating with Sarasota and Sun City Center. Jack & Bev Phillips organize this event each year and plaudits must go to them for their sterling efforts in that undertaking. Also worthy of mention this year are the ladies in the kitchen, under the supervision of Sandy Czachor, who provided such tempting goodies from before the first game through to sweets and spiced apple cider after the second one.

Sun City Center Competitive Tennis Club (CTC) members played their game inside a women’s prison facility recently. L to R Petra Stimmel, Pat Iacurci & Nancy Williams facilitated a Tennis Fun Day at Hernando Correctional Institution for women in Brooksville. Approximately 25 lady inmates received certificates after learning tennis techniques, scoring and finally playing doubles games. Recycled rackets, balls & net were donations from the CTC and other SCC Tennis Association members.

By Marge Lange The 26th of January, on a very windy Florida day, we had 32 people watching the final match of our club’s mixed pairs tournament. The wind can have a direct impact on the bowl so needless to say the bowlers were bowling in adverse weather conditions. When that happens, we never know just what to expect. However, both Linda Hawken, Skip, and Dave Clarke, Lead, nailed the draw and brought the bowls in to score points for their team. We congratulate them for their first place win. They became the top winners in the club’s mixed pairs game. Coming in second were their opponents Jim Bryne, Skip, and Kathy Gonnella, Lead.

Lawn Bowling Pairs Champions

The Pebble Beach (men’s) section of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club completed their men’s pairs playdowns on Thursday, February 12, 2015. The final match saw Jim Byrne and Jim Blaine against Gary Heller and Rick Czachor. At the finish of 16 ends, the two Jims - Byrne & Blaine - came out the winners and were presented the Pebble Beach Pairs Champions title for 2015 by Ray Turman, Tournament Director. Kings Point Duplicate Bridge

The Kings Point Duplicate Bridge Association (KPDBA) recognized twelve nonagenarians during the break at their regular Wednesday bridge game on January 21. Hailing from eight different states, Canada and Scotland, these bridge players come together regularly to enjoy the competition of duplicate bridge. Playing for a total of 320 years, they compete rigorously. Members of KPDBA enjoy playing with and against these 90 year olds. Their memories of games past and the “good old days” bring forth many bridge stories. Their generously given guidance, advice and tips are eagerly listened to at break time. KPDBA is fortunate to have these nonagenarians as active members.

It was a night of murder – Murder on the Kings Point Express- the theme of the Kings Point Duplicate Bridge Association’s (KPDBA) Annual Banquet. KPDBA members and guests feasted on delicious dishes, had a chance to win prizes and played at being detectives. It was an evening of fun, fellowship and murder. Festively and thematically decorated, the Borini Theatre was transformed into a murder scene by Faye McKeown and the KPDBA banquet committee. A dead body, scene of crime yellow tape and a backdrop of the Kings Point Express introduced attendees to the theme of the evening. Tables contained ballots for voting for murderer, spy glasses and other detecting equipment, also murder weapons (paper of course). Written by Rose Ostrander, director of the Kings Point Follies, specifically for this occasion, directed by Carlyn Postle and acted by members of “Shows To Go” –part of the Kings Point Chorus, the mystery’s setting was a train carrying players to a bridge tournament. The bridge director is murdered and four players are very plausible suspects. Who done it? The suspects and the investigating detective wandered among the tables telling their stories. Audience members joined in with questions, comments and play acting of their own. At the end of the performance, attendees cast a ballot for their choice of guilty party. All the ballots with correct choices were placed in a basket. Three were chosen at random to win prizes for their mystery solving skills: Josie Rocco, Cindy Mannion and Leslie Cox. Who dunnit? The director’s girlfriend Busty Fanesse. KPDBA’s annual banquets have always been an evening of fun; filled with fellowship, good humor and interesting entertainment. This is one more memorable banquet to add to the list.

Visit One of the Best – Amelia Island

Story & Photos By Kai Rambow If you haven’t been, consider going and/or save the information for visiting relatives and friends. Consistently Rated as One of the Best If you’re bored with your weekend getaways to Wimauma, consider making a trip to Amelia Island. North of Jacksonville, Amelia Island is right at the Florida Georgia state line on the Atlantic coast. It is also consistently rated as one of the ten best islands in the country and one of the best islands in the world. The Beach is Not Number One Even though Amelia has one of the widest beaches, the number

one attraction is Fort Clinch State Park. The fort served as a military outpost during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War II. Visitors are most interested in what the fort was like during the Civil War. Period-costumed interpreters bring history to life. Our interpreter had a great sense of humor, making the visit fun. A Variety of Activities Walking the wonderful, wide beaches is a top choice. Additional active pursuits span a range. There are plenty of trails to hike or if you prefer there are trails to bike. If you’d rather not bike, you can rent a scooter to explore. On the inland coastal waterway,

The number one attraction: historic Ft. Clinch.

you can kayak and quietly view the wildlife. If you’d rather not break into a sweat there are pontoon boat tours to view the island, wildlife (including tourists), and even Fort Clinch. Or if you’re looking for speed, there are motorized, no-sail catamarans – something I’d never seen before. More traditional activities include several golf courses nestled in the beauty of the island. Strolling the picturesque town of Fernandina Beach, window shopping and eating in one of the many restaurants fits a leisurely pace. Quite a few of the buildings in town are historic. The wide variety means you can be active, relax or mix it up. It adds up to a memorable and fun visit.

Good Choices for Places to Stay and Eat Amelia Island has everything ranging from inexpensive hotels to B&Bs to a Ritz-Carlton. You will also need to decide whether you want to be close to the beach or in town. Locations are close to each other and parking is available, so you can stay in one place and get to the other easily. Prices will, of course, be higher during the summer season. Prices for restaurants were slightly higher as there are fewer chain restaurants and more locally owned and operated ones on the island and in town. However, no real difference when compared to some restaurants closer to home. Continued on Page 31.

Costumed interpreter bringing history to life. Continued from Page 30.

Tips for a Great Trip When to Go: Many people think of October and May as two of the best months here in Florida with great temperatures and relatively low humidity. These would be two great times to make this trip. You’ll have the

added benefit of fewer tourists and lower prices. Note: Watch out for event weekends. If you want quiet, avoid such weekends. If you want to attend the book, blues, jazz, wine or antique cars festivals, it may add something extra. Driving: It may be suggested to drive north to Ocala and then cut across the state to reach Jacksonville. Don’t bother. The drive is no more scenic than on I-95 and the constant changes in speed ranging from 35 to 70 miles per hour will be frustrating. The drive will take approximately four hours. Finding Everything: Amelia Island is well prepared. Be sure to visit their web site and get a booklet upon arrival. The booklet is well organized and can help you find everything you need to have a great stay. Web site: www.ameliaisland.com

Feline Folks

Have you ever wondered about the sizable outdoor cat population here in Sun City Center? Most of these “Free Roaming” “Community Cats” are feral; cats that are born in the wild and not socialized to humans. Included in this mix are domesticated social cats, who are lost or abandoned by owners who are unable or unwilling to care for them. Feral cats are beneficial to our environment. Born hunters, they control the local rodent/ snake population. Feral cats or “Community Cats” are a universal fact of life, and are managed and maintained by various organizations throughout the United states. Catalina Island, California, and Key West, Florida, support feral cat colonies. Locally, Feline Folks was created to reduce the large number of homeless, unwanted cats, by initiating a TNVR (Trap/ Neuter/Vaccinate/Return) program. This effort entails humanely trapping, transporting for spay/ neuter by a veterinarian, aftercare, and subsequent return to their outdoor colonies. Also, while in surgery the left tip of each cat’s ear is removed. This is called “Ear Tipping” & is a universal sign that is used to determine if a cat is sterilized. As a result of TNVR the feral cat population stabilizes. Zero population growth, no more kittens! The behaviors and stresses associated with mating, such as roaming, yowling, and fighting subside. Killing of these cats as a means of control is considered inhumane and ineffective. Studies demonstrate that TNVR is the single most compassionate and effective program to reduce the free roaming cat numbers over time. In addition to TNVR, the cat colonies are fed once daily by dedicated Feline Folks volunteers or other community members. Feral cats do best when not overfed. Keeping them slim is not only beneficial to their health but it keeps the cats hunting; fewer snakes and rodents. To learn more about our resident free roaming cat population and the mission of Feline Folks log onto the Feline Folks website: www. felinefolks.us. If you would like to speak to a member of Feline Folks or wish to make a donation of food or money, visit Feline Folks in the Kings Point North Club House lobby any Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. The Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce also has a food barrel for donations of canned and unopened dry cat food. Cadence Bank, located in the Publix shopping court, is sponsoring a food drop and information table March 30 through April 3. Monetary donations may be made through PayPal on the Feline Folks website: www.felinefolks.us or mailed to: Feline Folks PO Box 6294 Sun City Center, Fl. 33571-6294 Watch for future articles about Feline Folks, including some of their success stories and ways you can help our “Community Cats.” Kindness counts!

Military News MFST Appoints Trustees

Marines Elect 2015 Officers

L to R: Nancy Alguire, MFST president; new trustees D. Kay Benson, Thom Brown; Colin Howgill, MFST board chairman.

By B. F. Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret), Military Correspondent The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) recently appointed two new individuals to its Board of Trustees. The appointees, D. Kay Benson and Thom Brown were introduced to the board at their regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 24 at Freedom Plaza. The new trustees were selected based on their background experience and significant contributions to Sun City Center. Subsequent to her retirement as an interior decorator and Sales Manager, responsible for 21 Custom Decorating Studios in Florida, D. Kay was a Corporate Trainer for J.C. The Pelican Players: A Legacy Of Giving

By Ilona Merritt The Pelican Players is a robust community theatre group whose philanthropy is alive and well. The group recently gifted $12,000 to the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, bringing their total endowment, The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund, to over $30,000. “We are very proud to be in a position to provide financial assistance to students majoring in the performing arts,” states Linda Halperin, President of The Pelican Players. The Board of Directors works diligently to ensure that their productions are as financially successful as they are entertaining. In 2014 this was particularly true. Their productions included “Sylvia,” “The Queen of Bingo,” and “The Cemetery Club.” On average, more than 1,000 people attended each production. As a 50l(c)(3) organization, The Pelican Players donates twenty percent of its proceeds to The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund. The Pelican Players established the Fund with a gift of $18,000 to the Community Foundation in 2013. As a life-long endowment, the interest on the fund supports local college students majoring in the arts who meet the scholastic and financial criteria defined by The Players. And as the endowment grows, there is more money available for financial aid. “This is a win-win for Pelican and for the Community Foundation, which supports so many worthwhile causes in the Tampa Bay area,” states Pelican’s Treasurer, Wendy Smith. The Pelican Players has a long history of providing scholarships to local high school students with an interest in the arts. In fact, along with endowing The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund, they continue to support the scholarship students chosen before 2013. Until those students complete their college degrees, they receive $1,000 per semester from the Pelican Players. The Pelican Players next production, “All The King’s Women,” a charming and funny play that recounts stories about the King of Rock ‘n Roll and his impact on the people and culture of the times, can be seen on March 12, 13, and 14 in the Borini Theatre. Tickets are available for $15 at the Kings Point Box Office. The Pelican Players invites the participation of all Sun City Center residents. “Anyone interested in performing onstage, working back stage, or just being in the audience is welcome to become a member. A love of theatre is all that is required,” states Linda Halperin.

Contract Bridge THE RIGHT PLAY AT THE RIGHT TIME

Super Crossword DOING PR WORK

There is usually very little difference between playing a hand well and playing a hand perfectly, but occasionally this slight difference has a substantial effect on the outcome. West led a spade against four hearts, and South, seeing four probable losers -- one of which had to be averted for the contract to be made -- decided that his only real chance was to find East with the king of clubs. Declarer hoped to establish a 10th trick by leading a low club from dummy toward his queen, planning later to discard one

Solutions on Page 39

of his losers on dummy’s ace of clubs. Accordingly, South took the spade lead with the ace and played the king of hearts to dislodge the ace. He expected that dummy’s Q-10 of trumps would then provide him with the two entries he needed to accomplish his purpose. But East ducked the king of hearts and thereby foiled South’s plan. Declarer could not recover from this setback and eventually finished down one. South could and should have made the contract by leading the seven of trumps to dummy’s ten at trick two! East can do no better than win with the ace and return a spade. Declarer wins, leads the eight of trumps to dummy’s queen and returns a low club, taken by East’s king. The defenders cash their spade trick, but South is home free. Whatever is returned, he wins, cashes the queen of clubs, leads the three of trumps to dummy’s four and discards the jack of diamonds on the ace of clubs. Observe that East cannot stop the contract by refusing to take dummy’s ten of trumps at trick two. South counters by leading a low club from dummy at trick three and later leads the heart eight to dummy’s queen to produce the same outcome. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By Samantha Weaver

• It was British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who made the following sage observation: “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” • Though an electric eel is born with the ability to see, by the time it becomes an adult it is blind. This lack of sight is not a hindrance, though; the fish uses electricity to create an image of its surroundings in much the same way that we use radar. The electricity is also how the electric eel kills its prey, producing a 600-volt shock -- five times more powerful than a shock from a household outlet. • For reasons unclear today, in 18th-century England, bumblebees were commonly known as “foggy-toddlers.” • You might be surprised to learn that in 2011, a man by the name of Ignacio Marc Isperas was granted a U.S. patent for “apparatus facilitating the building of a snow man/woman.” According to the abstract, “the spherically shaped body and adhesion surface form a building component for facilitating the construction of the snow man/ woman.” • If you’re a pickle-maker in Connecticut, you should know that your product cannot legally be considered a pickle unless it bounces when dropped. • Philadelphia brand cream cheese was originally made in New York. • According to a recent survey by the National Association of Convenience Stores, 11 percent of adult Americans have at some point in their lives worked at a convenience store or gas station. For 3 percent of adults, that was their first job. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Thought for the Day: “Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy.” -- Albert Einstein © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

But overall, your efforts result in well-earned recognition and all that can follow from that. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your financial situation seems confusing, even for the fiscally savvy Bovine. Maybe it’s the conflicting advice you’re getting. Check it out before things get too tangled to unknot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relaxed attitude goes a long way in helping you deal with any of life’s irritants that might be popping up this week. You’re also a reassuring role model for others in the same situation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect favors creativity, which should persuade you to work on your artistic projects. If time is a problem, prioritize your commitments so that your work isn’t compromised. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Scrutinize all the job offers that interest you. Most are honest and worth considering. But a few might not be completely forthcoming about what the job is and what the salary and benefits are. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) An unexpected snafu could delay the completion of a project you’re eager to finish. Find out what’s causing it, fix it, and if you need help, don’t be shy about asking for it. Good luck. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) An idea that could be helpful to you comes from an unlikely source. Listen to it. Discuss it. If necessary, adjust it. If it looks as if it might work out quite well, go ahead and use it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Be careful about allowing someone to share a very personal secret with you. This could cause problems down the line with others who are involved in that person’s private life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec.21) A cooling down of a relationship could be the result of neglect, unintended or not. To save it from icing over, you need to warm it up with a large dose of hot Sagittarius passion. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan.19) This is a good time to get involved with a number of family matters that involve money and other issues that might jeopardize the closeness between and among family members. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb.18) Cheer up. That difficult person who appears to be deliberately stalling your project might just need to be reassured of the value she or he brings to it. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Good news! Expect to feel reenergized now that you’ve gone through that stressful energydepleting period involving a lot of changes. Now, go out there and show them what you can do. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a warm, giving nature that inspires many to follow your example. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
