Fling Puts Kings Point in the Swing of Spring By NOKP Staff On a gorgeous Tuesday, the second week of March, residents from Kings Point and all around Sun City Center gathered to ring in the season at the annual Spring Fling. Organizers called this year’s event the best ever since the Fling began in 2006. Booths lined the festival ground, highlighting many of Kings Point’s clubs, groups and activities as well as showcasing several of Sun City Center’s best and brightest businesses. The weather was perfect, the food was amazing and everywhere you looked was another smiling face. In its fifth year, the Spring Fling is an event that fosters community pride and introduces newcomers to all the wonderful things Kings Point has to offer. This year’s event certainly delivered. “The Spring Fling gives us the opportunity to provide a place for all of our residents and other

folks in our community to come have some good, old-fashioned fun.” Said Kings Point President and General Manager, Ginger Anzalone. “These events have been great in the past, but this year has topped them all.”

SammyRides Cyclists Are Grandparents on a Mission
Every grandparent loves his or her grandkids. Many have been known to joke: “If I knew it was going to be this fun, I would have had the grandkids first!” But, when you find out your special angel has incurable cancer, the doting becomes mobilization. Sammy Rotman was born May 21st, 1999. Mike and Lois Libenson adored little Sammy and her big sister, Rebecca. The girls loved spending time with Granddad and Grandmom. Sammy also loved to dance. The diagnosis and treatment of the bone cancer, osteo sarcoma, eventually led to the amputation of Sammy’s left leg. But even that did not crush her spirit. In April 2007, Sammy toured Hollywood as the guest of model Heather Mills. The bright, beautiful nine-year-old lost her battle with osteo sarcoma on September 17th, 2008. Sammy’s story, and the knowledge that she was but one of thousands suffering

from this remorseless disease, gave birth to a movement with a mission – defeat pediatric cancer. SammyRides, a group of bicyclists, most over age 70, are committed to biking over 2,400 miles – from Sun City, Arizona to Sun City Center, Florida – in a effort to raise awareness that seniors are active and committed to volunteerism. They also hope to raise $1,000,000 for research, care and, hopefully, a cure for pediatric cancer. These folks have “geared up for war” and are committed to the long haul; and they want you to join them. From the SammyRides website: “We can set the standard and energize the rest of our nation’s seniors as we fight for the health of our grandchildren.” Their request is simple: “will you stand with us?” Mike Libenson calls riding for Sammy a “precious obligation.” He and Lois first recruited another cycling couple, Dick and Susan

Vogt to help them lead the ride. Others were quick to embrace the cause. John Bear, Mike Brown, Adolf Lex, Jim Wheeler, and Jim’s feathery sidekick, Harry Gray, will join Mike and the Vogts on the cross-country ride. Averaging 50-plus miles per day may seem daunting, but each one of these folks is not only driven, but also very experienced. Even the parrot has over 25,000 miles under her beak. The Editor’s Corner
Hey Folks, One of our goals with the News of Kings Point is to keep you up to date on the entire goings on here in your community. Another, just as important, is making sure you are aware of all the opportunities for fun and friendship provided to you by the Kings Point Clubs. Traipsing around the Spring Fling introduced me to some wonderful folks, and a quick trip down the hallway in the North Clubhouse revealed tons of additional exciting activities. At the Fling I had the opportunity to meet the lovely ladies of
the Kings P o i n t Quilters. T h e i r stated purpose is “to extend the love of quilting among our group and to the community through donating ‘Loving Lap Quilts’ to various
organizations.” Their group is open to folks, whether or not the own a sewing machine, and their meeting facility is well stocked with machines, supplies and folks ready to help you get started. You can join them in the modular sewing room on Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. or Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about this great group of ladies, call Katherine Swick at 813.642.8505 or Jane Ricker at 813.633.9295. I was also able to tune into the frequency of the Kings Point Amateur Radio Club. More than just a hobby, ham radio operators are called into service during every tropical storm, natural disaster and missing person search. Why? Because, when it counts and lines are down, radio can deliver messages dependably, loud and clear. The Kings Point Amateur Radio Club meets the first Monday of the month in the Main Clubhouse Craft Room and on Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The experience includes emergency communications during natural disasters, practice events, local parades, control operations and traffic handling. You can also learn to repair radios or train and test or your license. They also get together just to socialize. You can join them for breakfast at Rachel’s in Wimauma Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. or come to the spring and fall picnics. Model Train Club invited me in to look around and, even though it was “repair” day, turned on the cars so I could watch them run. I was instantly
a kid again. My little guy was with me, his baby blues utterly mesmerized by the activity on the tracks. We had a little engineer in the making. If you love trains like I do, you should definitely go check these folks out. No experience is necessary. They will teach you, one-on-one. You can choose your time to come based on what you would like to do: construction on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. and operating on Fridays at 1:00 p.m. All aboard! Of course, there were many other clubs and activities represented at the Spring Fling and hundreds of others available to Kings Point
residents. Sing with the chorus, break a leg with the Pelican Players, paint or sculpt with the Art League, deal yourself into a card game or just swap stories in the café. After that, take some time to tickle the ivories, cast a line, get in some exercise, cut a rug, write a verse of poetry or learn about the computer. Mingle with other singles, share your appreciation for the art of discussion or celebrate your heritage. The choices are endless! If you have not yet, stop by the management office and pick up an Activity Directory. The fine folks in the office take very seriously your opportunities to have a good time. So, if you wake up tomorrow morning and you ask yourself: “what do I want to do today?” Now you have your answer. In closing, if you are in charge of a club, group or activity, the News of Kings Point would love to hear from you. We would like to highlight your hobby and make the creative going’s on in Kings Point a regular feature. If you are a published author or you know one, drop us a line and let us know. Kings Point Community Elects New Federation Directors Submitted by Brian May, CAM, General Manager, Continental Management
The annual election campaign to fill five seats on the Federation of Kings Point Board of Directors ended during the Federation Membership Annual Meeting on Friday, March 19 with the selection of Bill Richards and Eileen Peco to fill the District VIII and IX seats for a two-year term. The candidates for District I - Vince Vincent, District II – Forrest Davis, and District VII – Russell Foti were unopposed. The Federation Board consists of nine representatives elected from each of nine relatively equal-sized districts. Each director is elected to a two-year term, with five district seats up for election this year. The campaigns began last November when candidates were required to declare their candidacy. Each residence in each district is entitled to cast one vote for their choice of candidate to represent them in Federation matters. The new board will immediately begin transition activities, and on April 1 they will meet to elect officers and begin their terms as the new leadership of the 9,000 resident community of Kings Point. About Kings Point Federation The Federation of Kings Point Associations, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation, registered in the State of Florida and governed by Florida Statute 617. The purpose of the Federation is to negotiate bulk contracts on behalf of the member associations and to oversee the management of the community recreational facilities, transportation system, and community security. The Federation is managed by a nine-member board of directors elected by the unit owners. The membership of the Federation consists of each Association and has an elected representative who speaks for all members of that Association in the membership meetings.

Fifi Fifi is a pretty Shih Tzu mix. She has unusual eyes and a silky soft coat. Fifi came to CARE because her owner became critically ill and could no longer care for her. She seems to like to explore and then find a cozy quiet corner to nap. She is looking for a patient and loving owner who will help her transition into the next phase of her life. As part of her adoption, Fifi will be brought current on her shots and microchipped.

Ivy Ivy is a black and white female domestic short hair mix. She and her two siblings were brought to CARE as scared little kittens. Ivy is the most outgoing of the trio. She was the first to venture out from their nest and to desire the touch of her human caretakers. Ivy is a delightful kitten who is looking for a forever home where she can continue to grow. As part of her adoption, Ivy will be spayed, brought current on her shots, and microchipped.

plenty of fun and entertaining things to see and do. One side of the festival grounds was dominated by the food tent, where hardworking folks kept the burgers and dogs coming, hot off the grill. Next to this, the entertainment tent offered fun for everyone including singing, dancing and clogging. Just outside the entertainment tent, car lovers gathered around some beautifully restored Detroit muscle and chrome. On the opposite side of the field, the Kings Point Quilters provided a vivid display for fans of art with a softer side. These ladies proudly exhibited examples

of quilts recently donated to Hospice, Moffit Cancer Center and the Veteran’s Hospital. Next to them, Kings Point Art League member, Barbara Graham, sketched caricatures of festivalgoers. Other league members displayed paintings in a variety of styles, once again illuminating the amazing artistic talent in Kings Point. Not to outdone was the community theater group, Pelican Players, at the Fling promoting both their Spring Play, “Love, Sex and the IRS”, opening April 6th, as well as several upcoming one-act plays. But the artistic side of Kings Point wasn’t the only thing on Connie Allen, Matt Permuth and Nanette Leggett

display. The spirit of service was also well represented by the Sun City Center Emergency Squad and the Community Emergency Response Team. For those who love their furry friends, the Dog Owners Group, was on hand with big smiles and wagging tails. B.J. watched the group table with the help of his human, Jerry Millstein, and group member, Pat Midolo, while his hairy cohort, Toby, tooled around in a cart with his human, Tim Metcalfe. of eye-catching handmade jewelry and other crafts. But it may have been the cyclists that garnered the most attention. Cruising around the grounds sporting t-shirts that would make a construction cone look drab, the dedicated folks from Sammy Ride made sure everyone was aware of their cause, their determination and, most of all, their inspiration. Representatives from retirement centers and care facilities such as Connie Lesko of Freedom Plaza and Chelsea Veeneman of Sun Towers chatted with festival attendees about “somedays”, “maybes” and “just in cases.” Dena Baxley, Jennifer Yurcus and Julie McCullough from Spa Serenity encouraged residents to take
time to get fit, be relaxed and feel beautiful. It was easy to find the motivation when these ladies were setting such a powerfully illuminating example. At the center of all this activity, Kings Point staff, including Nanette Leggett, Connie Allen and Rick Cobb made certain the vendors had everything they needed and that every guest was enjoying their day. The News of Kings Point would like to extend a special thank you to Ginger, Matt and all the folks from Kings Point Management and the Kings Point community. I know that everyone has complaints about bad drivers. Heck, I’ve said it before, but there must be a great market for used cars with turn signals in mint condition - because I rarely see drivers use them anymore! It
bothers me too, and I spend time every day running radar and driving around town enforcing traffic laws. As a result, it is rare that I go a day without writing someone a traffic ticket for the many offenses that I see. Still, I take no satisfaction in issuing fines. Just about everybody in Sun City Center learned to drive somewhere else, so this class helps put everyone on the same page. The hope is that if we all approach driving the same way, there will be fewer accidents. That’s something we all want.

Cart Path Opens To Much Fanfare
By NOKP Staff Tuesday March 9th, 2010 could not have come soon enough for many residents of Kings Point and Sun City Center. Three years of ingenuity and a team effort by Sun City Center residents, community groups, businesses and political representatives came to fruition as the ribbon was cut on the long-awaited Cart Path extension connecting the Wal Mart parking lot with the neighborhoods of Sun City Center and Kings Point. Dignitaries on hand included Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners Chairman, Ken Hagan, who served as Master of Ceremonies. Commissioners Mark Sharpe, Kevin Beckner and Rose Ferlita rounded out the political contingent. Monsignor Harold Bumpus, Pastor Emeritus of Prince of Peace Catholic Church led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Invocation. Other speakers included Major Ronald Hartley, Commanding Officer, District IV, HCSO, Ed Barnes, President of the SCC Community Association and Walt Cawein, Co-chair of the Golf Cart Path Steering Committee. The work leading up to this celebrated moment began when the Golf Carts 2 Wal Mart Committee – Walt Cawein, Paul Courter, Anne Cross, Martin Hurwitz, Don Renwick, Karen Ryan and Ron Zelins – leading a petition drive gathering 4,400
signatures to support the cause. This successful campaign led to a meeting with Commissioner Kevin Becker in early 2009. Commissioner Becker took the petition to Tallahassee to lobby for political support of the plan. Back home, SCC Community Association Ed Barnes brought local, county and state officials together in support of the measure. Eventually other key contributors offered their support. District 4 Representative, Al Higginbotham, State Representatives Seth McKeel, Ron Reagan and Rhonda Storms and Commonwealth Plaza developers Stan and Rick Whitcomb of Whitcomb Properties joined the effort. In December 2009, the County Department of Public Works began construction. Following the ribbon cutting service, a celebratory golf cart parade moved down the 800foot crushed asphalt path, beginning on Del Webb Blvd. just south of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church and ending only after the carts had traversed the newly minted Highway 301 crossing. The Cart Path has additional safety features included golf cart only barriers and signage at the Highway 301 intersection. Also, residents should keep in mind that the path is for golf carts only – no pedestrians or bicycles. The crossing itself may be used

The 2010 Ryder Cup Tournament was held February 13-14. The Tournament was preceded by a formal dinner held in the Kings Point main clubhouse banquet room. The match play was won by the RED TEAM. Chairmen for the event were, Jack Kubiak and Butch Gadd. by golf carts, pedestrians and bicycles. Excitement is still high but organizers and law enforcement request continued caution. Our own Deputy Rob would like to remind the folks in Kings Point and Sun City Center that, although the path is now available, it is
new; and many folks traveling through the area may not yet be aware of the crossing. In addition, all golf cart operators should respect traffic laws. So, be on the lookout and you can enjoy the added convenience in safety and security.

Music Lovers: Join the Sun City Center Organ & Keyboard Club
The Sun City Center Organ & Keyboard Club is for music lovers of all levels from beginners through advanced players. Open to all residents of SCC & Kings Point. Group lessons are offered every Thursday in the Florida Room at 9am. Music is provided and yours to keep with your personal notes written on it as the lesson is taught. $3.00 per lesson with a professional teacher each week.

Twenty-five years ago, five Kings Point couples taking ballroom dance lessons from Carl and Mary Forsberg agreed that they needed a large area in which to practice their new routines. Their goal was to attract as many other ballroom dancers as necessary to form a club that would qualify to dance in the theatre. Eventually, one hundred couples signed up for the fledgling dance club. By-laws were developed, annual dues were established and a limit of 125 couples was set. A dress code was adopted - men wear coat and tie, ladies wear dressy outfits. The club proved to be so popular that a waiting list of potential new members was developed. Anytime a member couple could not attend a scheduled dance, a waiting list couple was invited to fill that vacancy. Monthly dances were scheduled from October to April with an annual dinner dance in February. Money left over after paying the bands along with the fee charged to waiting list couples when they attend were used to fund the dinner. As membership continued to grow the total membership increased and is presently l65 couples. The current annual dues are $50 per couple, and a waiting list is still maintained. A variety of bands are scheduled each year and play all types of dance music. Anyone interested in joining the dance club should contact Mary Reter at 642-9439.

The United Methodist Church of Sun City Center, 1210 Del Webb Blvd. West, will be presenting Love Encountered, the Final Journey, a series of four musical dramas depicting the passion and resurrection of Jesus from Thursday evening April 1 through Easter Sunday April 4. Written and directed by church member Carol Stewart, Love Encountered will take the viewer through the final days of Christ on Maundy Thursday at 7:00 p.m., Good Friday at 7:00 p.m., Holy Saturday at 4:00 p.m., and Easter Sunday at 6:45 a.m., 9:30AM and 10:55 a.m. Love Encountered begins on Maundy Thursday with the Living Last Supper, a dramatic portrayal of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper during which each of the disciples will deliver a monologue about their relationship to Jesus. This will be followed by a congregational communion distributed by the Disciples themselves. The series continues at 7:00 p.m. on Good Friday when the Drama Team will present The Passion of Christ, the final scenes in Christ’s life including Jesus’ prayer and Judas’ betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter’s denial, Jesus before Pilate, and the road to the cross at Calvary. The Friday service will include several selections from Part II of Handel’s timeless Messiah performed by the church’s fine Chancel Choir and accompanied by strings. On Holy Saturday the narrative will continue with a freshly penned drama entitled Were You There. Finally, the church will be offering three opportunities to witness the joy of Resurrection on Easter morning. The sunrise service will begin at 6:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the church and will be led by C.J. Kligora, former Worship Leader at the Gibsonton United Methodist Church. The 9:30 a.m. and 1055 a.m. services will both be held in the sanctuary and will feature the church’s Chancel Choir, OASIS Praise Team, Drama Team, Sanctuary Handbells, organ and a professional wind and percussion ensemble. These multi-media services will present a powerful musical-dramatic account of the Jesus’ death and resurrection. Ruth and Donald (Pete) Johnson of 716 McDaniel Street in Kings Point celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on March 1st. Originally from Ohio, the couple have lived in Kings Point for 18 years. Ruth spotted Pete playing basketball and asked a friend to set up a date. Their first date was a street fair and they continued to date for three years until marrying in Van Wert, Ohio in 1940. The couple has two children, Rod and Janis, and now enjoys seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After Pete retired from Continental Can Company in 1977, they lived in Orlando for several years. Since moving to Kings Point Pete and Ruth have kept busy fishing, playing bridge, gardening and golfing. An excellent golfer, Pete played until age 91. Now he saves his energy for billiards when the kids come to visit. His talent for sinking great shots gives Pete plenty of opportunity to share humorous anecdotes from his “misspent youth.” Still active and healthy, you can find the couple in the clubhouse every day where Pete rides the bicycle and Ruth walks a mile in the halls. When you see them next, make sure to wish them congratulations and a very Happy Anniversary!

1986, members were asked what was done with chorus members who sang off key. After much discussion the decision was made that as long as this doesn’t keep newcomers from our group or cause us to lose members we should not discourage these people. We want the chorus to be an activity of all. This philosophy continues today. Our Director, Mr. Chuck Wirick, may get teased about conducting an off-key chorus, but when concert night arrives, the chorus raises their voices in song and it sounds just right. Retired Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Pauline Zazula, is the featured artist of the month for Kings Point’s Stained Glass Club. She and husband Nick have been married for 44 years. Pauline and Nick split their time between exciting Kings Point and beautiful Traverse City, MI. The couple has two married daughters and five grandchildren. Pauline stated, “I took classes four years ago, and Stained Glass has given me the opportunity to be creative and meet scores of wonderful people.” Along with serving on the board of directors of the Stain Glasses Club, she serves as president of the Kings Point’s Highgate D Condo Association.
Rehearsals of the Pelican Players’ Spring Play “Love, Sex, and The IRS” are proceeding well according to Director, Bill Turcotte. “We are rehearsing three to four times a week, developing our personalities, working with props and melding together into a performance team. The hardest facet has been trying hard not to let our uncontrolled laughter interfere with learning our cue lines. Love, Sex, and the IRS is a wild farce with twists of fate, sight gags, mistaken identities and hilarious comic lines. Jon Trachtman [played by Clint Shepherd] and Leslie Arthur [played by Rex Hall] are out of work musicians who room together in New York City. To save money, Jon has been filling tax returns listing the pair as a married couple. When the IRS informs “the couple” they’re going to be investigated by a Mr. Spinner [played by Jim Klamer], Leslie masquerades as a housewife, aided by Jon’s fiancé Kate [played by Jessica Cothron]. The complications and hijinks just keep coming from there. Love, Sex and the IRS will be performed in the Borini Theater in the Kings Point North Clubhouse at 1900 Clubhouse Drive in Sun City Center. The show is scheduled for Sunday April 18th 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Kings Point Borini Theater at 1900 Clubhouse Drive Sun City Center. Tickets are $5 and are on sale at the Kings Point Box Office. Betty Moran and her twin sister Marge Jockel founded the chorus in 1977. The theater had not yet been built, so their concerts were held in the Kings Point Clubhouse Lobby. There was only a small spinet piano and the pioneers of the chorus struck a deal with the management at that time that if the chorus could raise $5,000 the management would contribute the remainder money needed to buy a Baldwin Concert Grand. So that intrepid little band held bake sales, card parties, rummage sales and other activities to raise the money. In 1978 the Baldwin Concert Grand was delivered. The 1981 Christmas concert was held in the new Kings Point Clubhouse Theater now known as the Borini Theater. As in any chorus not all voices are equal, but there are no auditions for membership. Auditions for the Pelican Players Fall Play Neil Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Street” will be held at the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church on Tuesday April 20th and Thursday April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at 1239 Dell Webb West Sun City Center. The cast consists of 2 males and 3 females. Although the play was nominated for the 1972 Tony Award for Best Play it reflects the current times. The main character Mel Edison has lost his job after many years and now has to cope with being unemployed at middle age, intense summer heat on the Upper East Side of New York City. Mel suffers a nervous breakdown and it is up to his brother Harry and sisters to bring Mel and wife Edna back to a firm reality. Neil Simon walked a tightrope between comedy and drama. But the Pelican Players are mentors, and you can be assured that you the actors will be given guidance and any help that you might feel you need. “The Stolen Soul” To Open At Palace Dinner Theatre
When “The Stolen Soul” premiered at the Amandla Theatre in New Jersey, the reviewer for the Asbury Park Press stated “(Andy) Oosthuizen, who also directed, proves to be as good an actor as he is a playwright—and he’s a very good writer”. Andy Oosthuizen now lives in Kings Point, and we are indeed fortunate to have him directing and acting at the Palace Dinner Theatre in the play which he authored. Oosthuizen portrays The Man, supported by A. J. Carroll as Eddie the Kid. Also featured is Helen Moore, who last delighted audiences in “Daughters” on the Palace Dinner Theatre stage. “The Stolen Soul” is a drama with comedy. To quote the reviewer again, it is “A strange and edgy morality tale with gentle, humanistic undertones…..”. Since this is Oosthuizen’s own creation, his acting and directing suit his play to perfection. Audiences will be touched by the connection which takes place between a lonely old man and a homeless young thief. Moore appears as a nosy neighbor with an affinity for alcohol. She provides some comic touches to the play. “The Stolen Soul” opens on Friday, April 2 and continues through April 25. Show times are 7:00 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Theatre goers can come for the play only, or they can dine from the restaurant’s full service menu prior to the show. The Palace is located at 3858 Sun City Center Blvd., next to Hungry Howie’s. What is the most important single faculty needed to become a good bridge player? The answer, in the opinion of most experts, is the ability to avoid error. Consider this deal where it would be very easy to go wrong. The problem is how to play three notrump after a low spade lead. There are two pitfalls that must be avoided for the contract to be made, and both of them are of a type that would cause many declarers to go wrong. The first critical step is not to duck the opening spade lead, but to take dummy’s ace at once.
If you were to play low from dummy instead, East would win with the king and return a spade, and down the chute you’d eventually go. But even if you put up the ace, you would not yet be out of the woods unless you tackled diamonds before clubs. Thus, if you crossed to your hand with a heart to try the club finesse, you’d go down two after East took his king of clubs, cashed the king of spades and returned a diamond. Both recommended plays can be logically supported. It is reasonable to assume at trick one that West does not have the K-Q-J of spades, from which he would have led the king rather than the five. East is therefore marked with one of these three honors, in which case the play of the ace offers the strong possibility of blocking the suit. The second step is to immediately force out West’s only possible side entry card, the ace of diamonds. The king of clubs -regardless of who has it -- can be dealt with later on, but the ace of diamonds constitutes a real threat that should be removed at once. The defenders are helpless against this sequence of plays and cannot prevent South from scoring at least nine tricks. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
