Lancaster III parade celebrates Luck of the Irish
The residents of Lancaster III got their green on to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a cart parade and block party.
Lauren, a resident of Lancaster III, said she and her friends love their neighborhood. “It’s a quiet friendly neighborhood surrounded by oak trees, which we think makes it a great place to walk and visit in the shade.” The residents of this friendly
little slice of Kings Point sure are a fun bunch. The neighborhood includes homes on five streets— Lancaster, Langtree, Laughton, Locksley & Lonigan—and these folks love to celebrate together. The idea for the St. Patrick’s Day Continued on Page 2

Kings Point Art League Art Show Winners Announced Submitted by Kings Point Art League On February 27th and 28th, the Kings Point Art League held their annual Art Show. The theme this year was “Over the Rainbow.” Nearly 200 paintings were submitted for judging by well-known artist and author, Anne Abgott. The winners were as follows: “April” by Arlene Egret won Best of Show. “Central Park Winter” by Dianne Sullivan won First Place Overall. This was a Special Award by the Judge. “Through the Looking Glass” by Diane G. Simon won the People’s Choice Award. But those were not the only art and artists recognized in this exceptional gallery of work. First Place ribbons were awarded to Rita Pitre, Mary Russo, Yoshihiro Koseki, Bernadette Mueller, June Healey, Barbara Wolons, Michael Manghise, Bonnie Murphy, Steven Cooper, Mary Chabot, Bruce Fallender, Joseph LoBaido, Jean Paul, and Ted Daubresse. These artists displayed outstanding work across a wide spectrum of styles and media.

The excellent work offered by those who won these honors sure made judging difficult. In fact, there were many standout pieces among the work that did not place in the top three. Each category was filled with numerous honorable mentions. Artists mingled and admired each other’s work at a wine and cheese reception following the show on Wednesday, February 27. cart parade and party came from organizers, Judy Boyer and Chris Leavitt. The ladies distributed flyers door-to-door in the neighborhood, inviting everyone to the St. Paddy’s soiree. Residents cruised in their golf carts and then headed to the corner of Locksley and Lonigan for a potluck block party. Everyone came bearing lawn chairs, snacks, desserts and drinks. Folks visited for a while, sipped libations and shared snacks. Soon enough, the clouds came and started to rain

Happy to have had the chance, albeit briefly, to reconnect with friends and neighbors, the residents of Lancaster hurried inside to escape the “Irish weather” that dampened the Irish holiday. Who are the people in your neighborhood? By E. Adam Porter, Editor, News of Kings Point One of the awesome fringe benefits of serving as the Editor in Chief of this community newspaper is the opportunity to meet so many interesting people in this community. Each month as I am reviewing submissions from folks all across Kings Point and Greater Sun City Center, I am introduced to some amazing people doing a lot of fun, exciting, creative and educational stuff. As I go through the emails, submissions and letters, I often think of a song from my childhood. Mr. Rogers singing, “Who Are the People in the Neighborhood?” In that spirit, here are a few people from 33573 you might be glad to know are your neighbors. Betty Beach-Connell is a retired pastor and member of the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center. Betty is working on a book that, when finished, will encourage countless women through some dark times in life. Frank Kepley is a retired US Navy Captain who handles PR for several local veterans groups. Each month Frank shares the latest news and events open to local veterans. His efforts allow veterans to meet, interact, share stories and talk with those who, they know, will “understand.” Emma Gadd faithfully covers the Falcon Watch ladies golf news for your community each and every month. So, if you play ladies 9-hole golf at Falcon Watch, and you see your name in the paper, thank Emma. She’s the one who sent it in so you could “read all about it.” Chris O’Hara is an enthusiastic member of the local Women’s Chorus. Each month Chris fills us in on all the great goings on regarding the chorus. Whether sending out an invitation for women to join the chorus or announcing the next concert,

Chris keeps us up to date. KPAL, the Kings Point Art League is a collection of amazing artists at all experience levels. Maybe you know a few of the recent award winners – Diane Sullivan, Arlene Egret, Diane Simon, Ted Daubresse and Bruce Fallender. Deputy Jason Castillo is the new community resource deputy. After spending several years patrolling other areas of Hillsborough County, Deputy Castillo’s full time job is now assisting residents of 33573. But did you know Jason is a “local boy” who grew up in Ruskin and still lives in Wimauma? Carla Miles is a volunteer with Hope Fund, a local charity that is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children who live in Wimauma or attend the after-school and summer programs at Bethune Park. Jerry Healy is a shuffleboard enthusiast who recently set up a “Day at the Courts” event to celebrate a century of shuffleboard in the Sunshine State. Did you know Floridians have been shuffling for 100 years? I sure didn’t…until I heard from Jerry. Dance instructor Darlene Meadows is dedicated to helping seniors improve their physical and emotional health through exercise that is actually fun. One of Darlene’s most recent success stories is Ella Priori, a lovely 90-yearold lady who attended her first dance class back in November. Priori first came to class with a walker and, after a few months, can now stay in step with others in the class. Of course, these are just a few stories of the interesting people in our community. I bet you know some more…and I bet you even are one. So tell us who you are and what you do to make Kings Point and Sun City Center the great place it is to have a neighbor you can call a friend.

Emergency Squad Alert
Jan Huber, Asst. Chief, PR The Sun City Center Emergency Squad was started in 1964 by fourteen first aiders trained by the Red Cross. Today “The Squad” is more than 400 volunteers including licensed EMTs, medical responders, drivers and dispatchers as well as a support staff of administrative and mechanical workers. The Squad will respond to your call for emergency medical assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
WE ARE “THE SQUAD” There is a general misconception in town that confuses the Emergency Squad and the Security Patrol. Who are we? We are the Sun City Center Emergency Squad. We are the largest all-volunteer Basic Life Support unit in the State of Florida. We have served our community for almost 50 years with emergency medical services at no charge. Last year we responded to 6,800 emergency calls in the greater Sun City Center area. Our wheelchair vans transported almost 3,000 patients to various medical appointments. Our volunteers are highly trained. Our EMT’S attend
Hillsborough Community College and are nationally certified. Our Drivers and Responders are trained in-house by our certified instructors. We are on the go constantly and the services we provide to the community are far different from the type of services provided by the Security Patrol. We are totally dependent on community donations and our community has supported us each and every year. We are affectionately known throughout greater Sun City Center as “THE SQUAD.” The other organization which patrols the streets, but only in Sun City Center, is “The Patrol.” We hope this will help you to distinguish between the two organizations.

Thirteen students have successfully completed the intense 52-hour “Emergency Medical Responder” course given at the SCC Emergency Squad training center. Students are first trained and certified in CPR. Following this aspect of the course, the students studied medical and environmental emergencies, airway management, the human body, bleeding, shock, and poisoning. Successful Fund Raiser
“The Squad” held their annual 50’s dance on March 3rd at the Borini Theatre in Kings Point. It was a sold-out success and was attended by over 300 people who enjoyed four solid hours of music and dancing to 50’s tunes played by “Del and Gary.” It was a great opportunity for the community to mingle with “The Squad” in a fun filled environment. The attire for the evening was jeans, tee shirts and poodle skirts. Close to $3,000 was raised. Many thanks go out to our community for their support.

“April” by Arlene Egret won Best of Show.
Lynn has lived in Harrison, New York as a snowbird from 1996 until 2005, and became a full time resident in Kings Point in 2005. Before retirement, she was in Retail Management and fashion coordinator with some display work as well. She first started to paint as a child, but began a 4-year art major in high school. Lynn’s mediums are watercolors, watercolor pencil, colored pencils, and ink. Her favorite art subjects are abstracts, oriental, and Kad-doodles. Lynn teaches Basic Drawing, Illustration, and Portraits in Pencil in the Art Room at Kings Point. Her goal is to continue to write and illustrate children’s books for her grandkids, and teaching. Lynn’s hobbies are dancing, writing, travel, and teaching others the Joy of Drawing. Her present duties for the Art League include the demo coordinator for 8 years, and she also served as Vice President twice. Lynn’s artwork will be on display for the month of April in the Kings Point North Clubhouse. Please stop by and admire Lynn’s creative paintings.

If your GP won’t order the test for you, try the area health department or change doctors! You may even have to pay for the test yourself, but the peace of mind may be worth it. There are organizations that offer FREE screenings, too—so watch the papers. Especially in September which is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

days before the parade. They had seven floats in a single building and flowers everywhere. Volunteers were busy shuffling flowers from huge racks to the volunteers putting the flowers on the floats. The room was COLD but that’s necessary for the flowers to stay fresh for several days. Some items were made separate then added at the last minute. For the Panama cruise part of the trip, we had a man from Panama give lectures during atsea days before we got to the canal. As we went through the canal he pointed out the points of interest that he had talked

With Eddie Dixon This month I again had the pleasure to catch up with one of our “Where in the World” contest entrants, to learn a bit more about their trip. Anita Perrier and Carol Gunter, both from Kings Point, went on a Legendary Journey trip to see Rose Parade. Legendary offered several options for “after trips,” and they chose a Panama Canal cruise. I’ll let Anita and Carol take over… “The trip began with flight to Los Angeles on December 29th and arrived back in Sun City Center on January 18th by bus. One of the best parts of the Rose Parade part of our tour was the viewing of the floats being decorated

Inspiring Healthy Living Success Stories Submitted by Rosie Korfant, JSA Medical Group Only a short time into the New Year, with many people’s resolutions on the back burner, two 90-year old success stories have come to the forefront in the quest for healthier lifestyles. Sun City Center resident, Ella Priori, 90, walked into her first line dancing class in November sponsored by JSA Medical Group. Ella virtually “walked” in on a walker due to a three-time surgery on her right femur. She has an implant with a cadaver attached to her femur, which is wired together in several places. This allows her the mobility to attend line dancing classes, which help keep her healthier lifestyle options open. Not long after beginning her original class on a walker, Ella graduated to a cane and now keeps step and time along with her other class students. Veteran line dance teacher, Darlene Meadows, of King’s Point, has seen a transformation in Ella that she hopes inspires others to join the class and that, simply by faith, they, too, will find improvement in their balance, agility and stamina as it has done for Ella. Formerly of Exton, PA, Ella was not known as a “social butterfly,” and normally spent happy days as a homebody UNTIL

she realized her penchant for line dancing. She found it was such fun and a healthy exercise that she not only joined the local line dancing group, but became the choreographer for a dance troupe called the “The Westchester Song and Dance Troupe.” These “over 55 gals” entertained for various organizations from 1992 until 1998; getting paid $100 per show with SIX costume changes each! Upon arriving in Sun City Center only a few months ago, she noticed the ads for line dancing, “walked” in, and has become an inspiration to her current class at JSA Medical Group. Likewise, 90-year old J.D. (Joseph Durward) Stanlake, who originally hails from Kalamazoo, MI, and now of Sun City Center, boasts of his newly found yoga classes that it has helped to decrease his blood pressure by almost 20 points! J.D. who is a 25-year Navy Air veteran flew in many of the major campaigns in WWII, including Okinawa and Japan, and served on the ESSEX, arriving two days before General MacArthur. He became a flight instructor at Glenview Naval Air station where he often met the famous actor, Robert Taylor, who was there filming movies. J.D. said the “motivating factor” to move to Sun City Center was his daughter, Candace, who

then introduced him to yoga instructor, Lynne Sells. She has subsequently taught J.D. the rudiments of a regimen that has helped to control a blood pressure problem that began only a year ago with atrial fibulation. Along with yoga, J.D. attributes his healthy blood pressure to almost daily swims in the Sun City Center Community Association pool, where

Over 500 “Vials of Life” were explained and distributed and 216 Blood Pressures were taken in what proved to be a wonderfully successful day at the annual community Fun Fest. In addition, 20 potential recruits were signed up. The SCC Emergency Squad is the largest all-volunteer organization in the State of Florida. With Deputy Jason Castillo This scam will really bug you Recently, we have received calls from local pest control companies that an individual is coming out to residents’ homes and posing as a pest control worker. This individual does not work for any local company, but several residents in Sun City Center and Kings Point have reported his scam attempts. Some of these attempts have been successful. Here’s the way this scam works:
The bad guy comes to the door and announces that he is with the pest control company here for the regular termite inspection. When the homeowner says, “Oh, you’re with (their pest control company),” the scammer says, “Yes I am.” The individual then walks the perimeter of the house as if he is inspecting. He has also been successful in gaining entrance into homes and pretending to do an inspection inside. After the “inspection” the scammer informs the resident that he will be back “tomorrow” to spray. He then requests payment. Once he gets paid he never returns to do any work. Legitimate pest control companies are very concerned that their valued customers are
falling victim to this scammer. They want to assure you that he is in no way affiliated with any of them. David Francis, owner of Golden Rule Termite & Pest Control, specifically requested that his customers call if they do not recognize the individual claiming to be one of his employees and that individual does not offer any identification. Residents should always request to see identification as well as a company business card before giving money to anyone who says they are at your home to perform scheduled service. One resident did exactly that, and the scammer immediately left. If this happens to you, please call the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office non-emergency line at 813.247.8000. Tell us
what happened, and give us a description of the vehicle and the individual. Operation Drug Drop is coming April 4 Bring your unused or expired medication to the HCSO Operation Drug Drop on April 4. The drop off location is the SCC South Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. Drop off times are 9 AM to 12 noon. HCSO requests that you never just throw away your unused or expired prescription medications. Bring them to one of our regular drug drops and HCSO can dispose of them properly. By Bob Preston, Community Contributor Pennies, do they make sense anymore? They have been around in our country for nearly 220 years. The first US one cent piece was coined in the year1793 and was made of 100% copper. Since that date the size, material, and design of the coin has undergone several changes. Unless you are a numismatist (coin collector), you most likely know of the Lincoln cent and perhaps the Indian cent. In 1793, the United States of America was trying to establish itself among the nations of the world. President Washington was made aware of what an urgent matter it was for the US to have a stable system of coinage. The chain cent of 1793, designed by Benjamin Franklin was probably the first coin minted. Between 1793 and 1859 the design of the one-cent piece changed eight times. The next most durable design
of the US Penny was the Indian cent. The Indian cent was 100% copper from 1859 to about 1864 after which is was cast with 5% zinc. The Indian Head penny lasted for 50 years. The first Lincoln cent, like what we have today, appeared in 1909 making it the longest lasting version of a US Penny so far. If you have a 1909 penny hold on to it, there is one version worth over $2,000! In 1943 pennies were steel covered in zinc to allow the use of copper for military purposes. If you happen to have a 1943 copper penny or a1944 steel penny, either one is worth $100,000. There have been adoptions of new reverse sides of the Lincoln cent at the 100th and 150th birthdays of Abraham Lincoln but the face has remained the same. More pennies have been pressed than any other coin in the US. It is estimated that there are 200,350,672,000 pennies in circulation today. Back when

most of us seniors were kids, 2 cents was a lot of money. That was when 13 cents would get you into a Saturday matinee double feature, with a Flash Gordon serial episode, a cartoon, the RKO newsreel and box of JuJu beads – but those days are over. The price of a movie is now about $6.50 or more, and that is the senior rate. And all you get is the ticket in. You can easily spend almost 10 bucks on popcorn and a soft drink. Today’s pennies cost 2.42 cents to make. The scent of that fact begs the question, “What sense does it make to manufacture cents that are worth less than they cost to make?” Any one in business would have stopped such fabrication merchandise long before the break-even point of production was at hand. Now-a-days nearly all retail stores have a cup full of pennies for use by anyone who needs one. Here is a novel idea; let’s get rid of all of the pennies! Let’s have all retailers round off our final costs at all stores and businesses to the nearest nickel. Just think, if we did away with all of the pennies, stores would not have to keep pennies on hand to make change, banks would not need them to cash

checks, armored cars could save time and space by not carrying pennies around and most of all, we could empty our bureau drawers, purses, and change jars of these seemingly worthless coins. It wouldn’t be too much of an insult to old Abe; he will still be on the $5 bill. Canada plans to stop producing pennies in the fall of 2013. It all makes sense to me! A penny for your thoughts (no confirmed origin), or what are your 2 cents worth (taken from the original English idiom expression: to put in “my two pennies worth” or “my tuppence worth.”)

Interfaith Grant Helps Hospice
Divorced/Separated Grief Recovery
A multi-session grief recovery group program will be held at Saint Anne Catholic Church beginning Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. Each session will run until 12:30 P.M. The program is offered by Anne McGuire, MS, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, who has been coordinating this type of activity for the past 13 years. The sessions are designed to help those currently grieving the loss of a loved one through divorce or separation. Participants will gain fresh insights into valuable coping techniques through group interaction. Meetings are centered on Christian beliefs, science, and psychology, all of which support the healing effects of group sharing. This program is open to all. Dates are Saturdays April 6, April 27, May 4 and May 11. There is not a requirement to attend all the sessions. You may come at any time. April Movie Night
The United Methodist Church, 1210 Del Webb Blvd.; Sun City Center will be showing “THE NOTE” April 12, 2013. If you believe in miracles, “The Note” is a movie to see. It starts with a plane crash and a newspaper columnist, Payton MacGrudere, played by Genie Frances (General Hospital), who finds a note that appears have come from one of the passengers on the plane. During the last few minutes of his life, and realizing his time was limited, one of the passengers took those last few moments to write a note to a loved one. After finding the note, Payton goes on a quest to find the person to whom the note was written. When all hope is gone and Payton is considering all is lost, King’s, played by Ted McGinley (TV’s Hope and Faith) encouragement keeps her believing in herself and what she is doing. It seems as if the lives of all the people that she encountered, while searching for the one the note was meant for, were blessed in some way. On her search to heal a stranger’s heart, she discovers her heart has been changed also. The note, seems to have a mysterious and wonderful power all by itself. The movie starts at 6:30. There will be popcorn, cookies and beverages from 6:00 until the beginning of the movie. This will be a good time to see friends and neighbors that you haven’t seen in the past month. I’m sure you won’t be sorry that you came. Donations, for the refreshments, will be appreciated.
South Shore Band Concert
On Sunday, April 14th at 4:00 p.m., the Prince of Peace Concert Series comes to an end with a special concert featuring the South Shore Band. The concert will take place in the Monsignor Diego Conesa Center on the campus of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. This will be the South Shore Band’s inaugural concert at our parish. The South Shore Band is the premier band in the area and always presents a wide range of enjoyable music for the listeners. During this final concert of the season, the band will incorporate a pipe organ into their repertoire. They will perform works by Alfred Reed and the famous “Toccata” by Frescobaldi with organ, finishing with a band and organ arrangement of the “Organ Symphony” by Camille SaintSaens. A $5,000 grant was recently received by LifePath Hospice of SCC through the Interfaith Council of SCC to help cover the cost of nonreimbursed Charity Care provided to patients and families served at the Sun City Center Hospice House. Wilber thanked the IFC for the grant and also provided the committee members in attendance with a tour of the facility. Grants from the IFC are made possible by proceeds from the Nearly New Shop in Sun City Center and the hard working volunteers at the shop. The Nearly New Shop is located at 1515 Sun City Center Plaza and is open Wednesday and Saturday from 8:am – 12:00 pm. Donations are accepted Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 2 pm. She lives in our office since she is a tad bit overweight. We have this beauty on a diet though so it won’t be long before she has her girly curves back. Cleo loves to boss around the our dogs who live in, and pass through, the office. She likes to be queen bee. The Sun City Center/South Shore Branch of the American Association of University Women will host a meeting in the Atrium’s Florida Room on April 13 at 10:30 AM. The speaker will be Donald Thompson, co-author of Egmont Key, A History. For hundreds of years Egmont Key has been a lighthouse beacon for ships coming into Tampa Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. The island’s vast history reflects the major events that took place in Florida and the U.S. with the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, SpanishAmerican War, as well as WWI and WWII. In recent years, people have enjoyed the beaches, explored the ruins of Ft. Dade, and walked on the red brick “roads to nowhere.” Authors, Donald and Carol Thompson, bring an appreciation of Egmont Key and an “understanding of its place in history.” Donald is a retired high school social studies teacher who performs first person interpretations of historical figures such as Florida Railroad Baron, Henry B. The South Shore Democratic Club will meet Thursday, April 11, 2013 to discuss the Hillsborough County Democratic Club’s principles and positions. County and state issues will be the main focus of discussion. The recent Bass Pro controversy and the same sex registry are samples of local issues that have stirred wide controversy. With the housing market starting to recover, the number and location of new housing developments is another area of local concern as is the effect of legislation being passed right now by the in-session state legislature. The Scandinavian Club of Sun City Center will meet on Wednesday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m. in the Sandpiper Room. President Fritz Brinck will present a program about relationships between the Nordic countries, entitled “What Binds and What Separates the Five Nordic Countries--Past and Present?” Many Scandinavians have a general knowledge about the countries from which their ancestors came; this in-depth oral and slide presentation will strengthen their understandings. Moonglow Ballroom Dance Club will feature the live music of “The Treble Clefs” at their monthly dance on Thursday April 25th from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Community Hall, 1910 S. In July Bill Anderson a member of the SCC Woodcarving Club participated in a weeklong seminar with Bruce Lepper in Lake Placid, NY carving a Carolina Wren. Bruce Lepper is a nationally recognized bird carver and in the year 2010 was awarded the John Scheeler memorial Award which is often referred to as Best in World. Everyone at the Carving Club so admired this amazingly detailed and realistic carving that Bill agreed to share the techniques he had studied at the seminar. 12 carvers from the club gathered around Bill for one day a week for 6 weeks attempting to craft a Carolina wren as realistic as his. The class photo shows 9 of these pert little birds on exhibit in their owners’ hands.

The SCC Core Group for the Community Campaign Against Human Trafficking is grateful for the outstanding community support received for two March fundraisers. The Bridging for Freedom organization, dedicated to help children and young adults trapped in sex slavery, received generous donations from Quacktacular ($5,000) and the Golf Tournament ($3,570). Kentucky Derby Party The Kings Point Michigan Club will be having the annual Kentucky Derby Party on May 4th. The party starts at 4:30 pm in the Borini Theater. A fabulous buffet for grazing. Fun, games, a hat contest, and more. Cheer for your favorite as we watch on the big projection screen in the theater. Wearing a variety of costumes from their extensive Hawaiian wardrobes, the Hula Honeys of Kings Point, lead by Darlene Walters were on hand to entertain the Ladies’ Luncheon of Trinity Baptist Church recently. They performed hulas to music that varied from traditional to popular and had a huge turnout of the audience to try a simple one themselves. Helen Zeiders GFWC SCC “Volunteer of the Year” Submitted by Roselyn Cruthis
GFWC SCC Woman’s Club President, Jean Smith, announced that Helen Zeiders has been selected as the club’s Volunteer of the Year. The award is given annually, to a GFWC SCC Woman’s Club member who best exemplifies outstanding service through volunteerism. Helen has been a member of the SCC club for 10 years. During that time, she chaired the club’s Nomination Committee, the Home Life Committee and the Club’s Flea Market at Fun Fest. She also worked on the Arts and Crafts, Scholarship, Meals on Wheels, Audit, By-Laws, and Budget and Finance Committees. In 2012, she and Karen Messina co-chaired the Fund Raising Committee and raised over $6,000 for the Club’s service projects. As Chairman of the Home Life Committee, she was responsible for identifying charities to be supported by GFWC SCC members and distributing in-kind and cash donations to the various charitable organizations. She also continued to serve on the Audit, By-Laws, and Finance and Budget Committees. Helen was the first president of her Homeowners Association and has continued to work on many community projects. She has a long history of community service. Before she and her husband retired to Sun City Center, she was a member of a GFWC club in Pennsylvania. She also was involved in PTA, Brownies and Girl Scouts. She served as director of committees and conventions for a Pennsylvania State Association.

The annual Sun City Center Veterans’ Dinner/Dance took place Saturday, March 2, 2013 in the Community Association’s Florida Room. The “Hoedown” was sponsored by the combined Sun City Center veterans’ organizations. All veterans and friends were welcome and the event was sold out. A social hour followed by a delicious meal with appetizers was featured. The program was a mix of patriotism and entertainment. The KEGG featuring Kelly Emerson and Gary Garbelman provided music and dancing. Dress was country & western, patriotic, and/or military. All who attended appeared to have had a grand time. The proceeds from the event will be used to support the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies with any excess funds going to Cathy Williams’ Rehabilitative program at the James A. Haley Veterans hospital.

MFST Honors Donors at Luncheon
The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) held a Donor Recognition Luncheon at the Freedom Plaza Club on Thursday, March 3, 2013. The luncheon was held to honor those individuals who have generously increased their level of giving in 2012. MFST has received a total of $3,000,000 from its contributors and earned income during the past nineteen (19) years. Those honored at the luncheon have been major contributors to the corporation Photo by Frank Kepley and military families. Brigadier General Colin Howgil, MFST is a 501 (c)(3) organization (Ret), MFST Board Chairman. and as of 24 August, has completed 19 years of operation. Starting with the awarding of one $2,000 scholarship grant in 1994, the corporation will award sixteen (16) more grants in May of this year. A total of 155 students will have entered the program. JROTC programs are also supported in four local high schools. Additionally, the “Homeless Woman Veteran Program,” which assists in providing vocational training to women in need in order to enhance employment opportunities, is also supported by MFST. The “Paws for Patriots Program” is also funded by MFST. A disabled veteran requiring a guide dog must spend 26 days in training with their new dog. Continued funding of this program is anticipated.

Chief of Recreation Therapy at Haley VA addresses MOAA members
Cathy Chiovitti Williams, Therapeutic Recreational Specialist at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, was the featured speaker at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) meeting on March 6, 2013, at the Sun City Center North Side Atrium. Cathy, a full-time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Photo by Frank Kepley at the James A. Haley Veterans Cathy Williams, Lt Col Jerry Hospital for the past 22 years, Brockmeier (Ret). discussed the extraordinary advances that have been made in rehabilitative therapy, which now allow disabled veterans to participate in nearly any activity that they may aspire to undertake. Her presentation was remarkably inspiring and gives new meaning to the phrase “where there is a will there is a way.” Cathy has worked with Spinal Cord Injury patients for 15 years prior to taking over as Chief of Recreation Therapy. She has been involved with 100 newly injured athletes and her teams have won over 400 medals in disabled sports. She completed her education with a BS Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Florida in 1989 and has further developed in her field by various training and seminars and hands on experience in Rehabilitation. She has developed one of the largest Recreation Therapy programs in the country with 20 staff.
National MOWW Commander Addresses Local Chapter
LTC Gary O. Engen, USA, (Ret) was the guest speaker at the Military Order the World Wars (MOWW) at the Freedom Plaza Club on March 21st 2013. LTC Engen is the current Commander-in-Chief of the national MOWW military organization. CINC Engen has a Bachelor of Science degree from North Georgia College and advance degrees (Education/Computer Science) from Northern Illinois University. He was commissioned from Army ROTC in the Field Artillery in 1965 and enjoyed artillery and joint assignments during his 28-year career. His last assignment was as Professor of Military Science at the University of Mississippi. He joined MOWW in 1994 at the Augusta Chapter where he was chapter Commander and is currently the chapter chairman of the Membership and Patriotic Education Committees, and the Director, Augusta Youth Leadership Council. He advised the local chapter members of the status and events currently ongoing at the national level.

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, the Sun City Center Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) will host a Formal Military Ball, starting with a Social Hour at 5:30 pm, at the Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. The Ball will feature a Patriotic Program, hors de ‘oeuvres before a served dinner, entertainment, and dancing. Dining and dancing configuration at the Community Hall will be limited to 40 tables of eight. Formal dress is encouraged (military, black tie, dark business suit) – wearing military decorations is encouraged. Dinner, featuring a combined entrée of chicken breast Marsala and roast pork loin, will be catered by Orange Blossom. Music and dancing will be provided by Bob Boyd and the 42nd Street Orchestra. This is a BYOB event; however, wine for toasting will be provided. Cost is $50.00 per person. Checks should be made payable to MOWW. Attendance is open to all - prior military service is not a requirement. Individual tickets, for singles or couples, can be reserved now with payment due first week in September. A self- appointed table captain can reserve a table of eight (8) with $100 deposit due by June 1st. Tickets can be obtained from Charlie Conover at 260-3257.

A cake cutting ceremony was held with past commanders Harry Lascola, LTC, USA (Ret); Gordon Bassett, Lt Col, USAF (Ret); Sheila Greason, Harry Lascola, Gordon Bassett, Sheila current Commander; Frank Greason, Frank Zahrobsky, & Jack Seelye . Zahrobsky, Lt Col, USAF (Ret); and Jack Seelye, Capt, USAF (Ret) sharing the cutting of the cake. The military organization was founded in 1919.

Assume you’re South and West leads the seven of hearts against your four-spade contract. Right away you get a sinking feeling about what’s going to happen.

After you take East’s queen with the ace and lead a trump, you know East will win the trick, cash the king of hearts and return a heart for West to ruff. In the fullness of time you will also lose a club trick and so go down one. But there is no place for a defeatist attitude at the bridge table, so you begin to look for a way out until, after a while, you concoct a scheme that you hope will turn the tide. When East puts up the queen of hearts, you don’t take it with the ace, but play the jack instead! When East continues with a low heart, you win with dummy’s ten and cash the ace of diamonds, discarding the ace of hearts! Now you cannot be defeated, and you make four spades. The fly in the ointment is that East can upset your plan by returning the king of hearts at trick two rather than a low heart. The low-heart return by East is an error, to be sure, but it is one he might easily make. So if, as we said before, East is a player who never makes a mistake, he will return the king of hearts, and your grand scheme will go up in smoke.
