Art Show Winners Showcase Local Talent

Submitted by Katherine Pruschen The Kings Point Art League hosted its 2014 Annual Art Show, “Palette of Dreams,” on February 25th and 26th, with a total of 170 paintings entered in Watercolor, Oil & Acrylics, Graphics, Mixed Media, and a new category, Small World. Ribbons were awarded as follows: “Best of Show” - Mary Chabot “Symphony” “People’s Choice” - Bernadette Mueller “Croton Fantasy” First place ribbons went to Mary Ann Meeker, Yoshihiro Koseki, Mary Chabot, Pat Curtis, Arlene Egert, Carol Pasco, Ellamarie Carr, Lynda G. R.C.M.A. Artists Join KPAL For An Australian Adventure
Submitted by Cynthia Wortmann The theme of this year’s Kings Point Art League Annual Art Show was “Palette of Dreams,” the art of the Aborigines. The middle school students at Redlands Christian Migrant Association Leadership
Academy love learning about other people and their cultures. So the Art League invited the young people to create their own version of Aborigine art to enhance the venue for their art show on February 25th and 26th. Continued on Page 3

KPAL Honors Artist of the Month
Bonnie Murphy has been named the KPAL Artist of the Month for April 2014. Bonnie was born in Troy, New York. She is the mother of four children and stepmother of three. Bonnie also has twelve grandchildren whom she adores.
She worked as a TA in Schodack Central Schools for seventeen years. In 2009, Bonnie and her husband, Tom, moved to Kings Point. She enjoys being a volunteer on the Emergency Squad. In her spare Continued on Page 3
SCC Photo Club Announces March Winners Winners have been announced in the March competition of the Sun City Center Photo Club. Awards were given by professional judge Jack Winberg. In the Color Print category, at the Masters level, Patt Sulzberger received a gold for “Young Camel Herder.” Silvers were awarded to Rolf Sulzberger for “Reverence at the Western Wall” and “Desert Heat,” to Robert Winch for “Bluebirds at Home” and to Patt Sulzberger for “Talking to God.” At the Advanced level, golds were awarded to Matt Batt for “Queen of the Jungle,” to Jackie Hanson for “The Altar Boy” and to Marino Scheller for “Bird Watcher.” Marion Scheller also received a silver for “Begonia.” At Level 2, golds were awarded to Gina Hebert

The Editor’s Corner
Building The Story
Growing up on the ranch we had a deadfall at the back of the property. The lonely trunk of a long discarded tree. We didn’t know it’s origin, but that never stopped us from creating one. Was the tree lightning struck? It was a description I learned reading Westerns by masters like Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey. At the time it felt magical, and, truth be told, there’s still a bit of pixie dust in those words for me. If not lightning struck, what then? The bark was hard, dark and smooth. It felt like driftwood I remembered from living on the beach. But here it was in the back of a quarter horse ranch in central Florida, a hundred miles from any sizeable water. Could this tree be a relic, some petrified monolith from prehistory? That tree never revealed its secrets, never told us its story. So we worked overtime to create our own. In it we were Solo and Skywalker, fleeing the Empire with a Princess and a cargo hold chock full of contraband. We were pirates pillaging ships of the line and aircraft carrier crews in the Coral Sea. Some days we were tank commanders on the hunt for the Desert Fox or Indiana Jones on one crusade or another. The tree never tired of our adventures. No matter who we were or what we were doing, that tree was a vehicle for our imaginations, both a catalyst and a backdrop for our stories. A little over a year ago,
a friend whose kids had outgrown their backyard fort and swingset offered to give it to me if I could come by and get it. The fort was weathered and well loved. Perfect for my imaginative rugrats to discover their own stories. We picked it up, got it to the house and got it reassembled with the help of a yeomen band of family and friends. Almost immediately the fort was a castle, a firehouse and, yes, a pirate ship. The slide was never just a slide. The swings rarely just swings. Every part of “Fort Porter” was a catalyst for adventure. Then we moved. We had found a place on the river, a home that looked like the perfect waterside retreat for mom and dad and the ideal place for rambunctious little guys to make some memories. Unfortunately, the fort, at least much of it, would not survive another move. We scavenged what we could, promising the boys that Fort Porter would live again. Construction of the new Fortress of Imagination began about a month ago. Weather and weekend work – and a construction crew of no one but Yours Truly – helped drag out the process. Last weekend we put the floors in and the roof on. The tower is up and next on the agenda are a guardrails and the swingset arm. The kids will never notice, but when Dad rebuilt their favorite place, he took some time to

place guardrails around their imaginations. Not to keep the adventure out, but to push danger a step back, to keep reality from intruding too far
into their adventures. They will have the rest of their lives to battle the “real world.” For a while yet, I just want them to have the stories.

After viewing and discussing two movies about these colorful Australian natives, each student designed and painted an original, “Aborigine,” canvas banner to grace the walls of the Banquet Room in the Kings Point North Clubhouse where the show was held. The show’s official judge, Rose Edin, judged the student artwork along with that of the League’s artists’ work. A first place ribbon was awarded to Alfredo Hinojoza; second place winner was Norian Mendez; third place went to Selena Perez; and Daniela Sanchez received an Honorable Mention. All eleven students were celebrated when they visited the art show on Wednesday, February 25.

He was shot down near Verona, Italy (Udine) on March 18, 1944 and was a Prisoner of War at StalingLoft I, near Barth, Germany (on Baltic Sea). He was liberated by the Russian Army in June 1945. Col. Musgrave was assigned to B29s as a bombardier/navigator at DavisMonth an AFB, Tucson, Arizona. He trained for “one way” missions to Russia with atomic bombs and then was sent to Roswell AFB where he worked in development of air to air refueling with the 504th Bomb Group (one that dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima). Thanks Chief Schramm Chief Noreen Schramm’s term of office ended at the end of March after two years and three months at the helm. A lot has happened during that time span. We now have a power lifter on each of the four ambulances. This helps make transport of our patients more comfortable and saves wear and tear on the backs of our volunteers. Expensive Verizon cell phones have been replaced with TracPhones. We have installed brand new 800 MHz radios in each of our fully equipped ambulances and we now can communicate directly with the hospitals. The Squad received the very high honor of being named the top EMS agency in the State of Florida for its service to seniors. The Florida Department of Aging presented this award to Chief Schramm in front of an applauding audience of over 700 attendees. Channel 8 featured the Squad in their segment of “What’s Good About Tampa Bay.” They were also featured on Channel 10 in the segment, “Making a Difference.” Although Chief Schramm’s tenure as Chief is over, she will continue in her role as an EMT on several of the teams as well as being a mentor to newer members of the Squad.We will miss her guidance, leadership,

Squad Trains Front Office Personnel
A comprehensive orientation was recently held at the SCC Emergency Squad Training Center for the folks who volunteer to work at our front office. This course included Hippa regulations, exposure training, proper technique for taking blood pressure, and Squad policies and procedures pertaining to front desk personnel.This group of volunteers is vitally important for the day to day functioning of the Squad. Emergency Squad Featured Volunteers
Kay and Barry Bogart hail from Newark, DE. They moved to Sun City Center in 2011. Before retiring, Barry was a pipe fitter and Kay a chemical lab technician for Dupont. Kay also was an EMT with the volunteer fire company in Newark as well as an AHA CPR instructor. Barry joined the Squad in vehicle maintenance and became an EMR in 2013. He is currently a EMR/Van driver.Barry was instrumental in the installation of ramps on our vans to assist in transporting our patients into their homes. The Bogart’s also volunteer with the Security patrol where they serve as Captains of Team 18. Kay is an instructor with the Stained Glass Club while Barry enjoys walking their two dogs.We are fortunate to have such a dedicated couple as part of our Squad family.

Chief Schramm Welcomes 12 New Responders To Squad
Submitted by Jan Huber, Asst. Chief PR Twelve students have successfully completed the intense 52-hour “Emergency Medical Responder” course given at the Emergency Squad Training Center. Students are first trained and certified in CPR. Following this aspect of the course, the students studied medical and environmental emergencies, airway management, the human body, bleeding, shock, and poisoning. Students also learned proper technique for splinting, bandaging, backboarding and scooping a patient. Four of the happiest and cutest puppies ever! They are Rat Terrier/Shih Tzu mixes. Joey (M) and Gunther (M) are rust and white. Lucy (F) and Snoopy (M) are black and white. They were owner relinquished to C.A.R.E. because of changes in the owner’s living situation. They are so loving and happy! Absolutely adorable! They like showing off, giving kisses, and playing with each other and toys. Please stop by to visit with them. As part of their adoption, they will be neutered/spayed, microchipped. Feline Folks Polka Run
Feline Folks held its first Golf Cart Polka Run on Saturday, March 8 at the main clubhouse in Kings Point. The event was a big success and raised several hundred dollars to be used to trap, neuter, vaccinate and return the community cats in the local area. Feline Folks President Sheila Thurston and Kathy Doane, the grand prize winner of a hot air balloon ride.

Kings Point Golf Club 2014 Ryder Cup Submitted by Jackie McDow
The 2014 Ryder Cup was played at the Kings Point Academy Course on February 9, 2014 with the Red Devils defeating the Bad Boys. At the sit down table dinner on February 8 with wives or significant others attending, the teams and opponents were announced. In the speeches, the captains poked fun at each other for the amusement of the audience. Photos of all couples were taken with copies given out the next day. The gentlemen wore their jackets and ties and wore shirts in the team colors; the Red Devils in Red and the Bad Boys in Blue. Next year’s event has already been planned, so watch for the flyers in December at all the Club Link golf courses in Sun City.

The News of Freedom Plaza Submitted by MJ Rice The Plaza Players Club celebrates a birthday. The Freedom Plaza drama Club’s initial meeting in 2012 was attended by a small, but enthusiastic group who agreed on the name, set the dues ($10.00) for the year beginning in 2013. Called upon to present skits to entertain at Marketing events Plaza Players happily performed at these events. Before long, in November, 2013, “America Celebrates Freedom” during Freedom Plaza’s Military week demonstrated the ability of the Club to mount a successful production. So, here we are in 2014, the second year of existence with an increased membership, willing and able! The 2014 season opened the evening of March 21with“Two for the Show – A New Approach to Reader’s Theatre” featuring Freedom Plaza residents John Foster and MJ Rice. Both of whom appeared in the initial 2013 production. Responding to the actors on stage with a great deal of laughter and applause, afterwards, through written and oral comments the audience expressed their appreciation of the performances of the two accomplished actors as they entertained the residents of Freedom Plaza. The show, presented in three scenes included the opening of the ever popular “On Golden Pond”, a Senior Resource original short play, “Welcome to Acceptance” and ended with a short conversation between two really old people who cannot seem to remember who they are. “I’m Herbert” was written by Robert Anderson and proved to be the hit of the evening as it resonated with our audience. As advertised, the actors demonstrated a new and successful approach toReader’s Theatre.Commandingattention, the two actors convincingly staged “Two for the Show”acting, moving around the stage with books in hand. Seldom used, they became just another prop. Mission accomplished, the 2014 opener of the Plaza Players was deemed a hit! Two new productions and an encore of last year’s “America Celebrates Freedom” will fill this years season. Next up will be “Pasta, Passion and Pistols.” A Mystery dinner theatre presentation directed by Bill Turcotte is already in rehearsal. Get ready for a fun filled evening. The performance is scheduled for May in the newly renovated Plaza Club. Date TBA.
For Military week, an annual event, Diane Turcotte announced “The Attic, A Trunk and Broadway Memories” will be performed Monday, November 10, 2014. Dianne who is fine tuning a new, original production has announced that Carole Austin has agreed to be her Musical Director. The encore performance of “America Celebrates Freedom” will be at the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center on July 2, 2014 at 6:00 PM. This original production was also written by Dianne Turcotte. A dramatic, visual presentation of Americas’ fight to preserve the promise of America, liberty and freedom for future generations. With music, scenes and speeches of the times the cast portrays historic occasions including the rebellion against England, the emancipation and freeing of the slaves, the suffrage movement that secured the right to vote women. The show was a much needed reminder of our country’s ongoing struggle to remain free. The first full production of the newly formed Plaza Players successfully fulfilled the Club’s stated purpose, briefly, “To present, suitable, quality entertainment for the enjoyment of residents”. A New League At Freedom Fairways It must be spring. Golf is in the air. A mixed couple’s event, in existence for some time at Freedom Fairways is, due to increased interest in a mixed league being organized. Julian Graham and Dorothy Wagasky, two popular and busy residents of Freedom Plaza have announced a start date for the new League. Belles & Beaus will meet one Saturday a month and is open all resident golfers of Sun City Center. The first meeting of the new Belles and Beaus League will be Saturday, April 19, 2014. Players assemble at 7:30 at the Pro Shop. Shotgun start will be at 7:45. A modified scramble, the fee is $15.00. If you use your own cart the fee is $12.00. A tournament fee of $1.00 will be collected for prizes which will be determined by the number of players. Freedom Plaza residents may sign up on the second floor Plaza bulletin board. MFST Looking for WWII Veterans to Take on Honor Flights

The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) based in Sun City Center, FL is looking for World War II veterans who they can take on the Honor Flights to Washington D.C. The daylong Honor Flight visits to Washington D.C. and the war memorials is a complimentary gift of thanks to the WWII veterans. Each veteran has to have a ‘Guardian’ for the visit. MFST has a special program, The Donald P. Schings Honor Flight Support Program, to sponsor ‘Guardians’ for veterans who otherwise may not be able to take advantage of this wonderful program to honor and say thanks for the service of WWII veterans. Both veterans in the photo are on the record with a message to their fellow WWII veterans: “Don’t miss out on the once in a lifetime experience. You earned in; now enjoy it!! The meeting and luncheon was held at the Florida Room in the Sun City Center Atrium. General Howgill, a 31-year veteran of the United Kingdom Royal Marines, provided the group with information on Britain’s activities in Borneo, Aden, New Hebrides and Northern Ireland. Most of the activities he described took place in the 1960’s and 70’s. General Howgill was commissioned in May 1958 and served both as a helicopter pilot and a Commando Special Forces infantry officer. He possesses extensive, worldwide combat experience in security, counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. He has been awarded numerous combat decorations. He was also appointed the Royal Marines Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. He retired from the Royal Marines as a one-star officer in April 1989 and settled in the USA becoming a US Citizen in 1997.

The luncheon was held to show appreciation to the many supporters, volunteers, and other individual guests who make it possible for MFST to reach out to our military families. In addition to honoring the many MFST supporters, an award, created in honor of Don Schings, Judy Schings accepting Don the former president of MFST, was Schings’ award from Brigadier presented to Judy Schings, Don’s Colin Howgill, RM (Ret). wife. Don was very proud of MFST’s support for the Honor Flights program that he helped initiate, and the program, now established in his honor, has been named the “Donald P. Schings MFST Honor Flight Support Program.” The plaque will be placed in the Freedom Plaza Auditorium. MFST is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports through their grant programs military families, past and present. The beneficiaries include, but are not limited to: four year scholarships for high school seniors; JROTC Honors Program; Homeless Women Veterans; Operation Warm Heart; Veteran Guide Dog; South Eastern Guide Dogs Paws for Patriots program; Operation Helping Hand and sponsoring ‘Guardians’ for the recently named above noted “Donald P. It was sponsored by the Combined Sun City Center military veterans’ organizations. All veterans and friends were welcome. A social hour with appetizers preceded a delicious buffet. The program featured a mix of patriotism and entertainment. Music and dancing was provided by the KEGG featuring Kelly Emerson and Gary Garbelman. A drawing was held for door prizes.
MOWW CINC Featured at Formal Dining Out
Retired Air Force Capt. Deborah Kash, who is currently serving as the 83rd Commander-in-Chief (CINC) of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW), was the featured speaker at a formal Dining Out, which took place at the Sun City Center Plaza Club on February 20, 2014. The Dining Out was held to commemorate the 21st birthday of the local MOWW chapter. The 22nd Medical Group cited Capt. Kash as the Nurse of the Quarter and Nurse of the Year in1990. During Operation Desert Storm she was deployed to the 609th Contingency Hospital, Zweibrücken (Germany) where she served on the wound care team. Capt. Kash retired from the Air Force in 1994 and has subsequently held numerous MOWW national committee chair positions, which culminated in her current CINC position. While bringing the local chapter up to date on MOWW national activities she commented that she was very impressed with the level of activity the Sun Center chapter focused on the national and local community service goals. Those goals promote and encourage good citizenship, patriotic Following Capt. SCC Shuffleboard Club Enjoys a Day of Fun
On February 22, 2014 the Shuffleboard Club enjoyed their second Fun Shuffle event. This year members and guests not only enjoyed some unique trick shuffle shots they also gathered for hotdogs, refreshments, and fellowship in the pineapple courtyard. It was so nice to see SCC folks laughing like kids at the fair. The day was not only a time for refreshments and visiting but there was a great deal of competition at the shuffleboard courts. Over fifty contestants competed for prizes and bragging rights. There were seven fun courts set up to help shufflers hone their skills. All shufflers had to complete the first five mandated obstacle shots and be judged before their scores could be recorded. This year competitors had to navigate the: obstacle pin court, the rail shot, the bungee shot, the pin drop and the most difficult bunny shot. The snuggle shot and the kitchen shot were optional. Sixty-seven women took part in this tournament, playing in some or all of the events. They traveled to Sarasota from other parts of Florida: Mount Dora, Lakeland, Clearwater and Port Charlotte as well as Sun City Center; from other parts of the country: Pittsburgh, PA and Milwaukee, WI; and from parts of Canada: Bridgetown, Nova Scotia and Midland, Ontario.

SCC Lawn Bowling 2014 Club Champion
This year’s club champion Jim Byrne earned this title and his strips on Wednesday March 19th. The road to the champion title was no easy task; Jim faced stiff competition from a number of excellent players including his win over Joe Mignogna the 2012 club champion. Just as triumphant as his win was in the men’s division, his final match and win against the women’s 2014 club champion Diann Thomas was just as challenging. Diann was no push over she led Jim in the early stages of the match. However, Jim maintained a steady hand and kept delivering very close shots including two crucial takeout shots to turn the tide in his favor. Jim went on to reach the 21 points needed to claim the club champion title. Snowballs on The Green
Submitted by Linda Hawken A new and different format of lawn bowling was played at the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club recently when Tournament Director Tony Hawken introduced a “Snowball” Tournament. Triples teams play this format with each member of the team playing 4 ends as first Lead, then 4 as Vice and finally 4 as Skip of their own team. This unique type of play allows each team member to become familiar with the different positions and is a valuable learning tool for new bowlers and more experienced ones alike. No prizes were awarded – this was simply an introduction to the Snowball – but a lot of fun was had by the ten teams who participated. Suncoasters in Bowls USA Southeast Open Tournaments
Every March, the South East Division of Bowls USA (lawn bowling) holds a 6-day tournament, alternating between Sun City Center, Sarasota and Clearwater Lawn Bowling Clubs. This year, it has been the turn of Sarasota to host the ladies’ tournaments, which comprise singles, pairs and fours, each format played over the course of two days. On the first two days, taking part in the Singles portion of the tournament were Suncoasters Sue Bellerose, Carol Finlayson (a Sun City Center visitor from Midland, Ontario), Sandy Gill, Linda Hawken, Cindy Higgins and Linda McDougall, with Cindy placing second overall. Carol came third, Linda McDougall was Runner Up in A Flight and Linda Hawken was Runner Up in C Flight. In the Pairs format, Sue and Sandy were Runners Up in the Championship Flight, Cindy and Canadian visitor Carol Finlayson came fourth, Diann Thomas & Corinne Bailiff were winners of D Flight and Linda Hawken and Barb Mignogna were Runners Up in D Flight. Teams made up of Chris Heller & Cassie Krowl, Linda McDougall & Carol Fahnestock, and Natalie Lanouette & Gina Saxton also played in the Pairs format. SCC Photo Club Meeting
Italian Cultural Club News
AMICI, the Italian Cultural Club, hosted Chef Cinzia Cripe on March 12th at 5:30p.m. in the Banquet Room of the Kings Point Clubhouse in Sun City Center. She started the evening by giving some background information about Italian cooking using a map of Italy and books on the different regions. Chef Cripe, known throughout the Brandon area for her cooking classes, demonstrated the preparation of appetizer Bocconcini di Gateau di Patate (potato/gratin bites), salad Orange & Fennel, pasta Cannelloni and the Sicilian dessert, Cassata. Following each demonstration, that dish was served to 55 very hungry and appreciative members and guests. Red and white wine accompanied the meal. The Chef visited each table as the different courses were eaten. She talked about the food, answered questions and shared her culinary background information. An auction of dinner, to be prepared by Chef Cripe at the winner’s home, brought the evening to a close. The last meeting of the season for AMICI will be on April 9 at 7pm in the North Clubhouse Ripple Room. Gregory Seeley will be presenting a program titled, “Rome, the First Italian Nation.” Mr. Seeley’s class at the United Church Community College focuses on the Roman Empire. Residents of the Sun City Center area are invited to attend. The AMICI Club needs people to carry the organization forward and to schedule programs for the 2014-2015 season.
Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Caper Room Christine Cook will be the featured speaker at the Sun City Center Photo Club meeting on April 8. This accomplished photographer will be sharing tips on how to take exceptional monochrome photographs. In her retirement, Christine has become an excellent photographer, winning awards in club and the Florida Camera Club competitions. She won the Lexjet Sunset trophyand won the Florida Camera Club’s “Image of the Year” in 2013 for her photo “Rainy Day in Tuscany.” Christine has photographed at the Botanical Gardens, Naples Zoo and Naples Preserve. She describes her main interests in photography as wildlife and landscapes, but also loves city shooting for the lines, patterns, colors and texture. You can view Ms. Cook’s winning photo at the Florida Club’s website www.f3c.org. At 6:30 p.m., we will have a photo challenge where our club photographers are given an assignment and anything goes! This is followed by a short business meeting at 7:00 p.m., followed by the program. This is an open meeting and you do not have to be a member to attend. Dues for the 2014 year remain at $20 per person or $30 per household couple and provide access to club activities, competitions and classes as well as the photo lab with computers, scanners and large format printers. The Italian Club will have an East Coast Pizza Night on Thursday, May 15th at the KP Borini Theater. The doors will open at 5:00 PM. Tampa Bay Rays Senior Adviser Speaks to the Men’s Club
Dick Crippen, a former sports and weatherman anchor in the Tampa Bay television market and now senior adviser to the Rays, on February 19, 2014, visited the Men’s Club of Sun City Center. His talk on the Rays organization and where they want to go this year was energetic and informative. His narratives about present and past Rays’ players answered many questions Rays’ supporters had about the team this year and in the future. Dick has been in television for many years including time with ESPN and doing play by play for American Powerboat Television.Following Dick’s talk, a buffet lunch by Banquet Masters was served. There were 220 members attending this meeting. The next meeting is March 19, 2014 at 11:30 am. German-American Club Singers Musical Tour
Tour will touch mostly on Germany, but will include stops in Austria, Hungary and Spain.Program in called “So ein Tag,” which mean “such a day” and the rest of the music will mean “a day like this will never come again.” So, you better hurry and get your ticket so you can be part of this tour.The first half of the program will feature choral numbers and also solos to be presented by local talents, Efi and Kurt Nolden, Mary K. Merrill, Dieter Quitsch, Bill Hahn and John Haeger. The second half of the show asks the audience to join in on almost every song, all fun songs celebrating Fasching (Mardi Gras). This happy program will take place in the Florida Room (in the Atrium across from the Lap Pool) at 3 pm on Friday, April 11th. Men’s Club Valentine’s Dinner-Dance
Photos by John Armstrong On February 15, 2014, 287 Club members and guests turned out for the Valentine’s Dinner / Dance in The Community Hall on south Pebble Beach Blvd. Dining and dancing music was provided by Marc Chamberlin local entertainer, who has entertained audiences since he was 13 years old. His music covered the spectrum of soft ballads to rock and roll with some Latin beats added in. The buffet dinner of Prime Rib, Chicken Florentine, and Crab Stuffed Flounder was served by Banquet Masters. The next Men’s Club Ladies function is Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Hearing Aid Project
If you are like many residents of Sun City Center you might use hearing aids. Often, after years of use and hearing aid malfunctions you find that you need new ones. Then the question is what to do with the old ones. The Men’s Club of Sun City Center can help you dispose of the old hearing aids. The Men’s Club recently agreed to a partnership with the Florida Sertoma Club to gather used or defective hearings aids, no matter what type or condition. The hearing aids will be refurbished by Sertoma and given to children, primarily through the Children’s Hearing Help Fund Aid Loan Bank. The bank is made possible through the collaboration of Sertoma and the Florida Department of Health. Hearing aids that are not suitable for children or repair will be salvaged for valuable hearing aid components. The Men’s Club will distribute containers to businesses, churches, and other public domains throughout the greater Sun City Center area. The hope is that the community will support this worthy cause. So, look for the containers bearing the blue and white Sertoma labels, asking for your help. The Registered Nurses Club of Sun City Center will be having its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 3 in the Caper room at the SCC Atrium building. The speaker will beKris Wells who will speak about her experience in receiving a stem cell transplant. She calls it her “Stem Cell Odyssey”. The formal meeting will start at 9:45 AM with the speaker at 10:00 AM. Socializing and registration will take place from 9:15 to 9:45AM. Guests and new members are welcome. The club meets monthly from Oct. through May and includes two luncheons annually. Dues are $5 a year or $10 the first year which includes a magnetic badge. GFWC SCC Woman’s Club News
At their regular monthly luncheon meeting held on February 20th, members and guests of the GFWC SCC Woman’s club were treated to a very informative program by Joanne Sudman of the little known heart disease condition Long QT Syndrome. Having lost a grandson under the age of two several years ago, Joanne Sudman, wife of CA Board member, Sam Sudman, shared both her personal story and a great deal of general information on this heart disease topic. Although children and adults have been afflicted with this condition for years, tragically and all too often it is only discovered after the football player or other young person dies suddenly of no apparent reason. Realizing that only through early detection and treatment could other families be spared this same heartbreak, Joanne and her family turned their personal tragedy into an opportunity to help others through the creation of Simon’s Fund. Simonsfund.org is an organization dedicated to the diagnosis and early treatment of this potentially deadly condition. Following her moving presentation, Joanne urged all ladies attending to consider having their loved ones tested. Simonsfund.org, although originally established in Pennsylvania, is now available in many other states and continues to grow.
Computer Club Activity Changes
The extensive building program by the Community Association will result in a major parking problem on the Central Campus. This is scheduled to begin on March 27. Therefore, the following changes in the Computer Club activities are necessary. The APRIL 2 and MAY 7 Membership Meetings have been canceled. We hope to resume meetings in October. No Computer Classes or Workshops are scheduled until fall, but the Monitors in the Lab and the Help Line are available to assist. The LAB will continue to be open during its normal hours: 12:30 5:00 pm, daily except Sundays. Surplus Computer Equipment cannot be accepted during this period. The Computer Club “Journal” will continue to be published and mailed to Members. We regret having to make these limitations, but your safety requires such moves.

Jazzmatazz Dance Club
The Jazzmatazz Dance Club has added several new members from Kings Point since their performance in the November follies. GFWC SCC Woman’s Club Donates $7,500 to Samaritan Alzheimer’s Auxiliary
At their February monthly membership meeting at community hall, the GFWC SCC Woman’s Club once again showed their community focused generosity when they presented a check for $7,500 to Dolores Berens, president and founder of SCC’s Samaritan Alzheimer’s Auxiliary. These funds were received by the Woman’s Club as a grant from the Community Foundation with the stipulation they go to another 501c3 organization. Samaritan’s Alzheimer’s Auxiliary was chosen by the woman’s club board to be the lucky recipient. Mark Ralston to Entertain at United Community Church
The last Fantastic Friday of this season will be at UCC on Friday May 2. Mark Ralston, a singer impressionist whose background includes more than two decades of professional entertaining at venues across the country will highlight the evening. A catered dinner presented by Sun Coast Catering will be served in the Great Hall at 6:00 PM with the show to begin at 7:00 PM. Interfaith Council Presents Grant
The House of Hope was presented a grant by the Sun City Center Interfaith Council in a recent ceremony held at the Nearly New Shop in the SCC Plaza. Hillsborough House of Hope is residential facility offering addiction and life counseling to women who have been released from prison. House of Hope’s goal is to reduce the number of women returning to jail and helping them to become productive citizens. The Trinity Women’s Fellowship had a large turnout for their monthly luncheon. This month, chef Ron Harding, assisted by Pat Thomas, prepared a wonderful spaghetti dish with special sauce, accompanied by salad with a ginger dressing, bread with a pasta dip, and cupcakes. The guest speaker was Kathleen Hess the Area Representative for Voice of the Martyrs. For over 25 years, she has been speaking, teaching/preaching and assisting churches and mission organizations with humanitarian aid, medical and dental assistance and feeding programs. Very Rev. John F. McEvoy, V.F., Pastor of Saint Anne Catholic Church in Ruskin, is conducting weekly bible study classes during the Lenten season. On a very rainy Monday, March 17, more than 40 parishioners assembled in Saint Joachim Hall to discuss Saint John’s gospel story of the “Woman at the Well.” Fr. John guided the participants through a thoughtful reading of the scripture passage and then encouraged a prayerful, relevant discussion of this well-known gospel story. New PAL Ministry at Local Church
Pastor Mark Salmon of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center asked his congregation at a recent worship service to commit a Presbyterian Act of Love (PAL), each day for a month, to help offset the many random acts of violence in our society today. He gave twelve suggestions. For example, one could take a small gift to a sick person, or smile at an elderly person, or just listen to someone’s problems. Dr. Salmon got laughs when he suggested to the senior-age congregation, “For no reason, send a postcard to your grandparents.” Seriously, he then explained that if 400 church members did an act of love each day for a month, there would be about 12,000 extra acts of love in our community alone. At their annual party, Lancaster III in Kings Point enjoyed a wonderful catered dinner followed by entertainment provided by some of the Hula Honeys troupe of dancers, led by Darlene Walters. They performed dances to a traditional chant as well as more modern songs, ending with their signature tune “Little Brown Gal.” As a special surprise for the sister of Toni, receptionist at Kings Point South Club house, they also visited Sunset Grille in Bahia Beach for a short performance there. Dining guests that evening also enjoyed the performance, though viewed from inside the restaurant, and the dancers received many compliments on their costumes and the dancing. Retired minister’s first book published Betty Beach-Connell’s story is one of a life defined by adventure and grace Kings Point resident and retired Methodist minister, Rev. Betty Beach Connell, recently published her first book, “Embracing the Call.” Rev. Betty said “Embracing the Call” is the true story of what can happen when an imperfect woman discovers a perfectly gracious God. “I was in active ministry for twenty-eight years. But, before that, I spent thirty-seven years trying to make it on my own, taking my lumps and learning from my mistakes. And not always learning the first time.” Connell said. “Embracing the Call” certainly pulls no punches. It is the unvarnished truth confessed by a dear friend, a tale of human limitations and God’s limitless grace. Betty is relatable because she is so real, admittedly flawed but dedicated to pursuing God’s call on her life above all else. “It wasn’t anything I did that transformed my life. It was God’s love that gave me peace, grace and purpose.” Connell said. Reluctant to settle for a small penalty, and convinced that he could not make seven clubs, South ventured six spades. It seemed to him that on the bidding, North would have spade length. At any rate, he fervently hoped so. When East doubled, South stood solidly behind his decision and passed. West led the king of diamonds, and South was home. He won with the ace and played the K-Q-J of trumps, East holding up the ace until the third round. East returned a diamond, ruffed by declarer with the deuce, his last trump. South then ruffed the ace of hearts in dummy, drew East’s last trump with the ten and ran his clubs to score the slam. West could have defeated the slam with a club lead, but that does not detract from the credit due South for his bold bid. South might have been carted off in an ambulance had his partner been short of spades. It seems that flirting there is illegal and could get you 30 days in jail. • If you’re like me, social situations can be a nightmare of trying -- and usually failing -- to remember the names of all your new acquaintances. The next time you find yourself struggling to name the person you’re conversing with, you can always segue into this interesting tidbit: The inability to remember names is technically known as anomia. • Those who study such things claim that more Jell-O is eaten in Utah than anywhere else in the world. • W.H. Auden was already a celebrated poet when he left Great Britain for America in 1939.
