The Editor’s Corner

Fix It Already

By E. Adam Porter Editor In Chief, News of Kings Point We don’t get political. We want to keep these pages chock full of good news, so we tend to steer clear of the topics that ruffle feathers, barbecue cows and set people on edge. But every once in a great while something goes down where all of us have to come together. We have to look at what’s happening and say, collectively, “No.” Because, unless we demand action, some things won’t get fixed. In my family, my life and my work,I am surrounded by men and women who served in the Armed Forces of these United States. They served ably, heroically and, in some cases, involuntarily. They served, regardless of motivation, with distinction. Many in this community can say the same. Our veterans are the backbone of our culture… and we are failing them. This past Memorial Day, hundreds of millions of Americans took time out to remember those who gave the Last Full Measure of devotion. Flags were saluted, songs were sung, prayers were prayed and promises were made. But as the nation celebrated, countless people could not look past the empty seats at their tables. Open spaces where heroes once lived and worked and played and loved. These people served their country. They died waiting for their country to return the favor. Last month we published an open letter from retired Captain Frank Kepley, a Navy veteran who spent fifteen years working as a maxillofacial surgeon in the V.A. system. Captain Kepley laid it all out in plain English, with the authority and gravitas of a man who understands the system inside and out. Here, in part, is what he said: “We have to admit we do not have the capacity to handle the enormous patient load without hiring more doctors or fee-basing them out to the community. Of course, fee-basing costs more, and the administrators are afraid it will demonstrate their poor management skills, and consequently, they will lose their bonuses.” So, here’s the reality, folks. The system is engineered so that political buck-passing is rewarded while veterans suffer and, in some cases, die, while those elected or appointed to care for them duck the responsibility of advancing real reforms. In the weeks since this story broke, we have learned about countless veterans with chronic or life-threatening medical conditions that were dismissed or discounted. These American heroes died on our watch. I’m not willing to let that pass.

Recently, I had a conversation with a relative, a Vietnam veteran, who said he has always been happy with the care he received at the V.A. Once he could actually get care. See, it’s not the caregivers we need to take to task here. These people are doing a standup job, particularly since they are tragically understaffed and saddled with an absurd workload. President Obama called the V.A. scandal “disgraceful.” Mr. Obama went on to say the following, “If these allegations prove to be true, I will not tolerate it. Anybody found to have manipulated or falsified records at VA facilities has to be held accountable.” Unfortunately, the root issue here is not a corrupt administration. That’s just a symptom of a problem that is as basic as arithmetic. We have been at war in Afghanistan for about thirteen years. We were at war in Iraq for about a decade and in various additional shooting conflicts across the globe during that time. The basic math, as illustrated by Captain Kepley, reveals one stark fact: there are not enough doctors to manage the number of patients. And this will not change for all the wishing, hoping or finger pointing in the world. A few weeks back I talked with a leading veterans advocate in congress, Representative Gus Bilirakis. Rep. Bilirakis echoes what many other veterans have said, “When they can get care, that care is excellent, but there are not enough doctors in the system. We have to take steps to change that.” Thanks Congressman, but here’s my question for every single one of our elected officials who are in a decision making position with regard to this pressing issue. Why are we just now beginning to talk about this when you created the problem more than a decade ago? If your system is already overloaded, how can you expect it to function properly if you drastically increase the patient load? Why are we still talking about it more than a decade later? Where is the leadership here? What about respecting our veterans enough to actually do something to fix this? To do what should have been done more than a decade ago. Collectively, as people who love and respect veterans, we need to hold both administrators and elected officials accountable. The administrators so that no more men die due to their political selfinterest, and the politicians so they consider the cost and the consequences of their decisions before they put our veterans in harm’s way. So that, next year on Memorial Day, there will not be an empty space where a hero used to sit.

Also known as the “freshman dorm,” the Canine Assessment Center is the first stop for future guide dogs returning to the Southeastern Guide Dogs campus from volunteer puppy raiser homes, ready to begin formal harness training. The new 6,600 square feet Keith G. Hirst Canine Assessment Center will house returning puppies as the charity’s veterinarian staff and certified guide dog trainers evaluate the dogs for health, intelligence, and suitability for guide dog work. About 5,000 dogs have passed through the doors of Southeastern Guide Dogs’ former 28-year-old assessment kennel. The charity anticipates that about 7,500 dogs over the next 30 years will pass through the new facility on their way to extraordinary service careers. To raise the $1 million needed for construction, in early 2013 Sarasota resident Keith G. Hirst established a $500,000 matching challenge, inviting the community to participate and pledging to match every dollar raised. The Lions Club of Florida and the Bahamas responded with big hearts, contributing nearly $100,000, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation rallied with another $75,000. Combining all Lions donations, the Lions Clubs were the second largest contributor to fund the construction of the new Canine Assessment Center. The new center features dramatic improvements in sanitation, lighting, and air quality, with specialized systems to regulate moisture and minimize noise. Unlike the old kennel, the new freshman dorm features individual runs separating males and females, a temperament assessment area, and space for basic lab testing. It houses laundry and sterilization stations, supply storage, and working space for trainers and veterinary staff. “Our new Canine Assessment Center will increase our service capacity for years to come,” said Titus Herman, Chief Executive Officer of Southeastern Guide Dogs. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of the Lions Clubs who answered Keith Hirst’smatching fundraising challenge. We appreciate the friendship of Lions and the difference they make for our school.”

Walking Dangerously Submitted by Bob Preston Are you a walker? I am. I try to walk every morning. It is my quiet time when I get to think about the solutions to the world’s and my Association’s problems. The proverbial “they” tell me walking is good for me, so who am I to question. My knees don’t always agree. However, I have come across some dangerous walkers and dangerous walking situations. Frequently, when my supervisor and I are out for a drive, she will see walkers walking in the streets. Rhetorically, she will ask, “What’s the matter with these people? Why aren’t they on the sidewalk?” Lately, however, I have been giving more serious thought to just “what is the matter with those people and why they aren’t on the sidewalk.” A lot of it has to do with old ankles and geometry. You can add a little vertigo we seniors experience now and then. Probably most of us would

agree, but not necessarily admit, that the agility we once had in our youth has gone the way of my hairline. That being said, we tend, or ought to try to be more careful in each step we take. After all, these old bones are becoming more brittle every day. So where does the geometry come into play? One of the first axioms we learned in plane geometry while in high school was – the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. But almost all of the roads and sidewalks in Kings Point are curved to one degree or another. Some are less curved than others, but curved nonetheless. It is a cleverly aesthetic design but not very inviting to walk on. A gentle curve is easy to navigate. So why are so many people walking in the street? It’s the sidewalks, if there are any! They twist and turn more so than a snake. Add to that, other than a few of our more traveled streets

news@TheNewsofKingsPoint.com

such as Kings Boulevard, New Point Loop, Hammersmith Drive and perhaps a couple of others, there are no sidewalks. What a walker’s nightmare! Over time, because of roots, settling, repairs and other issues, they have risen up or dropped down on one side or another and in some cases have dips and breaks, which bring us back to the ankle issue. The other factor is that sidewalks made of concrete, a very hard substance and are very tough on our feet and legs, not to mention lower backs and knees Most of our road surfaces are made of macadam. Believe it or not, macadam is not as hard as concrete and does provides some bounce or cushion. My Mom always told me that the rule to follow when walking is that pedestrians and equestrians should always walk on the road facing traffic. As many of us now walk we are listening to our IPod, creating an added danger of distraction. We

may be listening to a news item or interesting story, have the volume too high and otherwise not paying attention to the act of walking. Here are some simple rules to follow when walking during the day or night. •Wear appropriate and comfortable footwear. •Wear bright colored clothing, such as a safety vest. •Where there are damaged or no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road. •Watch out for automobiles and golf carts. •Avoid animal encounters. •When possible, walk with someone. •Try not to startle other walkers •when approaching from behind. •Carry identification. •Pay attention to your surroundings. •And, of course, watch your step. •Most of all, take a walk, ‘they” say it is good for you.

Brandon Regional Hospital Announces Frist Humanitarian Award Volunteer Recipient Brandon, Florida (June 19, 2014) Brandon Regional Hospital has announced its 2013 Frist Volunteer Humanitarian Award was presented to Janice Doyle. Janice has been a volunteer in the hospital’s auxiliary since August 2011 and participates in the Ambassador program. This program seeks to provide Volunteers to patients, who may not otherwise have anyone to speak to. Patients that Janice visits are appreciative of her sense of humor, compassion, and great personality. Janice provides great company to the patients who may not receive any visitors, and Brandon Regional employees are happy to see her as well. She is able to lighten the mood. From a variety of sources, Janice has come across a needy family or homeless person that she is able to impact. She does this on a one-on-one basis, not through any formal organization. One such homeless person she encountered while volunteering as an Ambassador at Brandon Regional Hospital. Janice spoke with this individual and made a personal connection. Subsequent to his discharge from the hospital, she helped him navigate the maze of social services to access benefits, reminded him to take his medications and follow up appointments, and has taken

food and necessities to him. Janice continues to interact and provide support to this individual. Another example would be when she heard about a family in crisis in December 2013. Janice provided a Christmas meal, Christmas tree, and rallied others to purchase gifts for the children. All of this effort was done out of the goodness of her heart. The examples can be multiplied several times over in smaller acts of kindness or generosity. Her husband jokes that he “never quite knows what she will get into next.” Created in 1971, the Frist Humanitarian Award honors outstanding individuals for humanitarian and volunteer services. Named in honor of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. – founder of HCA and renowned humanitarian – this award recognizes individuals whose dedication and caregiving epitomize the highest standard of quality and personal commitment. Each nominee for the award is judged in the following four categories: • Level of commitment to the facility and patient care • Level of commitment to the community • Having a positive effect on others • Dependability, consistency, and people oriented

Janice received a pin, a recognition certificate, and a copy of Dr. Thomas Frist Sr.’s book “Good People Beget Good People.” As the hospital award winner, she will go on to compete for the 2013 national Frist Humanitarian Award. About Brandon Regional Hospital Brandon Regional Hospital is a proud member of the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services. BRH is a 398-acute care facility which includes a 25-bed Behavioral Health Center. BRH holds the following certifications: • Named among the 2014 Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® in the nation. involvement with the Hope Fund, Carla Miles is also the Chair of the Education Committee of the Woman’s Club. The Firehouse Cultural Center, which was highlighted in

September 2013 as the opening program for the Woman’s Club’s current year, is a recent addition to our neighboring community of Ruskin. The Center provides a unique hub for the arts, local artists and education.

USO Welcome Center is Woman’s Club’s Home Life Charity

The GFWC SCC Woman’s Club has a long history of support of numerous veterans organizations and causes both in our community and throughout the surrounding area. Through the years the club has made generous donations to the James A. Haley VA Hospital, participated in several wounded warrior fund raising projects, shipped box after box of cookies overseas for our troops, and helped collect thousands of coupons for military families, just to name a few. In keeping with this tradition of military support, what better way to close out their club year than by choosing USO Tampa Bay’s new Welcome Center as their Home Life Charity for the month of May. Each month a special charity is chosen by the Home Life committee to receive donations of goods needed as requested by the organization and monetary donations as well. In honor of Memorial Day USO Tampa Bay was chosen for the month of May. The USO Welcome Center, located at level two at the Tampa International Airport, recently opened and according to their website is a “home away from home for the thousands of military members and their families that travel through the Tampa Bay area annually.” The 1100 square foot Welcome Center offers complimentary food and drink, a television lounge and many other services for the veterans and their families. Club Treasurer Anne Rankin, who also volunteers at the USO Welcome Center monthly, Home Life Chair Gloria Brooker and club member Donna Frasier were happy to deliver to the club’s donations of over $300 worth of requested snacks - chips, candy, granola bars, cheese crackers, etc. In addition to the grocery items, a check for $75 is being presented to the volunteer on duty for future USO purchases.

Woman’s Club’s Newly Installed Officers take charge

At their recent monthly meeting held on May 15th, the GFWC SCC Woman’s Club’s newly elected Officers for 2014/2015 were installed. The installation was conducted by long-time club member Jan Bassett, a past President and current Director. Officers pictured are Ann Bohachek, Director; Anne Rankin, Treasurer; Karen Sochon, Corresponding Secretary; Chloe Odom, Recording Secretary; Roz Cruthis, VP Hospitality; Jan Caruthers, VP Publicity; Cyrille Cobe, VP Programs; Elaine Bialor, 1st Vice President, and Jean Smith, President. As part of the installation ceremony each director was given a garden glove, signifying their respective positions and importance to continuing club operations. The GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club is SCC’s oldest service club and meets on the third Thursday from September through May of each year. Most meetings are usually held at the Community Hall located at 1910 South Pebble Beach Drive in Sun City Center. Membership is open to women of all ages. Mr. Dahl, with one of his playing partners, Bill Schwarz, recently won the Senior Open Pairs award at the Manatee Regional ACBL tournament. Mr. Dahl and his wife, Marie, who is also a bridge player, moved from California to Sun City Center in 2004.

603 Hwy. 41 S., Ruskin, FL 40th Anniversary Luncheon in Fellowship Hall

Trinity Baptist Church recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a catered luncheon in Fellowship Hall attended by the membership. Senior Pastor Dr. Ron Churchill addressed the group and recounted the beginning the of the church. Minister of Music Rev. James Feist provided some musical and vocal entertainment. The first meeting of the church was held on September 9, 1973, in the Sun City Center Town Hall Annex, with 21 people in attendance. The first full time pastor was Rev. Ellis Eklof, Jr., who arrived in 1974, with his salary being paid by the Baptist General Conference. Soon after, three acres of land were purchased at the corner of S.R. 674 and W. Del Webb Blvd, for $40,000. Because the available funds were meager, two men each gave $1,000 and another gave $2,000 to help meet the terms of the agreement. The total church budget for that year was only $14,000. The Edgewater Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN pledged $30,000 to the building program. The church was built in 1974 and as the church grew, the 15-year mortgage was paid off in only 7 years. Over the years, the church continued to grow and now has over 350 members. Church facilities now include a Fellowship Hall, Narthex, Welcome Center, Church offices, and a Choir room. The parking lot was recently expanded, a new two-lane drive through was built and a new LED sign was installed to provide Christian messaging to the community. Next, will be the construction of a three-story administrative building, to provide a larger Choir room, multiple classrooms and restroom facilities. Through the years, the church has provided funds to help start several new churches. Ten years ago, the church established a Mission Endowment Fund, which provides earnings each year to support pastors who are starting new churches. In addition, twenty five percent of the annual budget is used to support 25 missionaries around the world. The future looks bright for Trinity Baptist Church as it continues to reach out to the Sun City Center community. For more information, please call 813.634.4228, or check the website atwww.trinitybaptistscc.com. Construction of the church and W. Del Webb Blvd in 1974.

SCC July 4 Breakfast is a Good Way to Start Holiday

About 130 volunteers are signed up in Sun City Center ready to serve area residents and guests a hearty pancake breakfast to start the holiday. The SCC Community Association has sponsored the breakfasts for the past three years to add a festive flair to the holiday. Last year almost 1,377 residents made their way to Community Hall on South Pebble Beach to join friends and neighbors. The open-to-the-public breakfast of patriotic pancakes (plain, blueberry, strawberry), eggs, toast, sausage, juice and coffee will be available for $5 from 7 a.m. to noon, with the proceeds going to the fireworks fund. Joanne and Sam Sudman, who organized the event last year, took on the job again this year and have been busily gathering volunteers, ordering food, and buying supplies for the past several months. The breakfast was moved to Community Hall last year when attendance outgrew the Florida Room on Central Campus. Because of the large turnout last year, they are planning for 1,500 this year. The first July 4th breakfast was in 2011 in the Florida Room on Central Campus as part of the community’s 50thanniversary celebration. Fireworks were also held in 2012 and 2013, but SCC Community Association Board President Jane Keegan recently announced that they would not be sponsoring fireworks this year due to parking limitations around the N. Pebble Beach ClubLink property where the fireworks were held. Construction is taking place on an extensive building project that will reconfigure the CA parking lot and add three new buildings--Information Center, Multi-Purpose Building and Samaritan Services, as well as an annex to the SCC Library. For information on the breakfast, contact Joanne or Sam Sudman at jsudman@tampabay.rr.com or 813-633-3106. PHOTO: Almost 1,400 people enjoyed a holiday breakfast at the Sun City Center’s Community Association’s South Campus on South Pebble Beach last year. The event is open to the public.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker FAMOUS HAND

NATION REORGANIZATION

Complicated conventions often lead to disastrous partnership misunderstandings, but every now and then they produce sensational results. For example, take this deal played in the match between Pakistan and Australia in the 1981 world championship. When Munir Ata-Ullah and Jani Fazli held the North-South cards for Pakistan, the bidding went as shown. The Pakistani pair were using a system called SAAPP (Stone-Age

Solutions on Page 23

Acol with Pakistani Pre-empts). The opening three-club bid by Fazli was artificial and indicated one of seven different types of hands! The true nature of the hand would presumably be described later on by the threeclub bidder. Ata-Ullah responded artificially with three hearts, aware that if Fazli’s three-club bid was based on a long, solid suit, it could not be hearts. Fazli thereupon jumped to four spades, indicating a powerful eight-card spade suit, one ace and a void in an unspecified side suit! Ata-Ullah’s five-club bid showed first-round control of that suit, and Fazli’s five-diamond bid identified his void in diamonds. This was all North needed to know, and he jumped to six spades, closing the bidding. There was nothing to the play. Fazli ruffed the diamond lead, cashed the A-K of trumps and king of clubs, then led a heart, losing only the heart ace to score 1,430 points. It was a magnificent triumph for the SAAPP system. The same deal was played at four other tables, and at each of them the South player opened the bidding with four spades. This was followed by three passes at each table. Perhaps we would all do well to learn SAAPP ASAP! © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver • It was famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright who made the following sage observation: “Many wealthy people are little more than janitors of their possessions.” • According to statisticians, about 200 people a year die while watching -- not playing -football. • Collective nouns are fascinating, especially when one kind of animal has multiple ones that can be used. Take ducks, for instance: A group of them can be called a flock, a badling, a brace, a plump, a sord or a waddling. If you see them on water you can call them a bunch, a paddling or a raft; and a group of ducks flying together is known variously as a skein, a string or a team. • Noted industrialist John D. Rockefeller was the son of a notorious con man, William Avery Rockefeller. • It takes about one minute for blood to make a complete circuit of your body. • The 1950s TV show “The Adventures of Superman” starred George Reeves, and for the rest of his short life he was best known for that title role. After his untimely death at the age of 45, he was buried in the same suit he wore as Clark Kent on the show. • Those who study such things say that more babies are born after the new moon and the full moon than at any other time of the month. Interestingly, more girls are born after the new moon, and more boys after the full moon. • For one week in April of 1964, the top five songs on the Billboard chart were all by The Beatles. That also was the year that the band had a whopping 31 songs on the charts. *** Thought for the Day: “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.” -- Truman Capote © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Things that usually come easily and quickly for the Aries Lamb might need more of your time and attention during the next several days. Try to be patient as you work things out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A changing situation can create some complications. But if you apply that sensible Bovine mind to what seems to be a hopeless tangle of confusion, you’ll soon sort things out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new look for your surroundings is fun. Expect to hear mostly positive comments on your efforts, as well as some wellintended suggestions you might want to note. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Maybe you’d rather do anything else than what you’re “stuck with” right now. But if you stop complaining, you might see how this could lead to something with real potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Even a proud Leo ultimately recovers from hurt feelings. However, a damaged relationship might never heal unless you’re willing to spend more time and effort trying to work things out. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) There are lots of changes on the horizon, so be prepared to make some adjustments in your usually fine-tuned life. One change might even impact a personal decision you’ve been putting off. LIBRA (September 23 to Oct.22) Being the dependable person you are could work in your favor for a project that requires both skill and accountability. But check this out carefully. There could be a hidden downside. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov.21) A temperamental outburst about a mishandled project causes some fallout. Be sure to couple an apology with an explanation. A new opportunity beckons by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Changing horses midstream is usually unwise but sometimes necessary. Examine your options carefully before making a decision. A trusted colleague offers good advice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) While much of your time is involved with business matters, fun-time opportunities open up by week’s end. Enjoy yourself, but be careful that you don’t overspend. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A “revelation” opens your eyes to what is really going on in the workplace. What you learn could make a difference in your career path. Continue to be alert for more news. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Not wanting to make waves might be the safest way to deal with a difficult situation. But no substantive changes can be made unless you share your assessments with others. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of talking to people that makes them want to listen. You could find a successful career in politics. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
