Community Radio Comes to Sun City Center Friendly Local Voices Want You to Have Fun in the Sun NOKP Staff There’s a new voice on the airwaves in Sun City Center, and they are hoping to hear from you. Sun Radio, 96.3 FM began its first official broadcast on June 1, though they had been on the air since the second week of May. Tune to WSCQ day or night for easy listening favorites from the 50s, 60s, 70s and a handful of familiar adult contemporary hits from later decades, as well as fun talk shows and compelling interviews with local club presidents and civic leaders. But if you are looking for political talking heads or acerbic partisan radio, search elsewhere on the dial. “We not going to get political,” Station Manager Peter Swartz said, “We’re the friendly voice of Sun City Center and Kings Point. Our goal for this station is to help bring the community together. We want to promote the lifestyle

and activities available in Sun City Center, and we want to have a good time. If this wasn’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.”

Swartz is a pro with more than three decades in all aspects of the radio industry. His right hand man, Vern Hendricks,

has about three months of broadcast experience, but Swartz says he could not run the Continued on Page 13

The Editor’s Corner Milestones & Reminders

By E. Adam Porter Editor in Chief, News of Kings Point August is an important month around our house. Two of our three boys were born in August, so the eighth month of the year is always a chance for us to celebrate milestones, eat our weight in cake, look back at lessons learned and talk about What Comes Next.

candles and see a man sitting where my boy used to be.

The five-year-old exploring nature.

Chris in Scotland

This year both of our August kids are reaching important milestones. The oldest will be crossing that “21” threshold. Chris has been stationed in England with the USAF for nearly two years now. His assignment there is up January 1, and his next duty station will be somewhere in the States. He’s open to wherever the next adventure takes him, but, of course, his mom and I – and his little brothers – are hoping for Florida. Niceville is one of the choices on his list, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. No matter where the Air Force sends himin January, he will be an ocean away for his Big 21. Hopefully he will do something memorable … that he will remember later. I gave him the same advice I’ve been passing along since he was a teenager, “Don’t do anything permanent.” When he was fifteen or sixteen he asked me what I “really” meant by that. Hopefully, he will remember my answer. It’s going to be tough, once again, to not be able to celebrate his birthday together, but we’ll just have one more reason to celebrate next January. I’m looking forward to that, though, I admit, it might be hard on this dad to look across birthday

Our middle child will be celebrating Big Number 5. No longer a “little boy” (just ask him), he is busy learning those Three R’s that are the keys to all education – reading, writing and arithmetic. That is, when he’s not busy setting up construction sites in the back yard, scooping tadpoles from puddles or fighting pirates from his fort, which also serves as a firehouse, a castle and a ship of the line. Here he is halfway to Double Digits, and it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating his first birthday. Now we’re shopping for school supplies. The little guy approaches everything fully invested, enthusiastic and excitable. He chatters incessantly and excels at turning our lives upside down. He’s wonderful. He loves being a big brother, and it’s heartwarming to watch him teaching our littlest guy things he learned from us. Even when he gets a little mixed up. Each year around this time I can’t help but get bit nostalgic. Endless reels of ViewMaster snapshots from years gone by flash through my mind. Births, steps, milestones and minor catastrophes. Life. Time flies, and every day is special. I think that’s why we celebrate birthdays. Sure, we want to make the Birthday Boy (or girl) feel special, but birthday celebrations are also a reminder that Ferris Bueller was right. Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you just might miss it.

About The Squad

L to R: Roy Paulsen and Chief Dennis Floto.

Squad Honored a Tribute to Marty Paulsen

Marty Paulsen was a special person. She loved to laugh and tell a good story. Her teammates at the Sun City Center Emergency Squad loved her laugh and enjoyed her company. She brightened every room she entered and the Squad mourned her passing this past May. Recently though, her husband Roy memorialized her service to the Squad and the community with a donation of 3 comfortable chairs for our Dispatchers and for the Captain’s desk in the ready room. Our Dispatchers love the chairs and our Captains and Asst. Captains are equally grateful for Mr. Paulsen’s generosity.

Every day, Emergency Squad volunteers give their time to the community to assist local seniors during their time of need. Whether it’s an emergency call or a transport from the hospital, volunteers provide more than the Basic Life Support skills they’ve learned – they provide comfort, reassurance and a hand to hold when someone needs it most. If you’d like to learn more about being an everyday hero, contact the SCC Emergency Squad. We are always looking for new volunteers. You do not need to have a healthcare education or career – training is provided for all our positions. Interested? Call Toria Smith at 813-633-1411.

Squad Acknowledges 15-Year Volunteer Thank You Mary Bramel

Throwback to 1999 – the new century was about to begin. Mary Bramel and husband Connie Abbott had retired to Sun City Center in 1998 after living in Japan for 28 years. Connie Abbott joined the Squad soon after moving here and had been cajoling wife Mary to join as well. And join she did. In her fifteen years of serving the community through the Squad, Mary has worked innumerable hours. Beginning as an Emergency Connie Abbott, Mary Bramel & Medical Responder, Mary Chief Dennis Floto. decided to audit the EMT classes. The next year she decided to become an EMT. “When I went to EMT school, I was the oldest student there!” Mary states. That was 5 years ago and since then Mary has gone to Dispatcher Training and is certified as a Dispatcher as well. Mary also assists with our Quality Control efforts reviewing our ambulance run reports. Mary states that when she can no longer be an EMT she’ll be looking for her next Squad volunteer job. “I have no plans to quit!” Thank you Mary Bramel, for your dedication and service to the Squad and the community.

New First Responders

The Emergency Squad is pleased to announce its newest Emergency Medical Responders. June alumni include (back row) Conor Richards, Jennie Casey, Trainer, Robert Montgomery, (front row) Austin Alfaro, John Fetting and Frank Gomez.

DOUG BELDEN SUPPORTS MELISSA POLO FOR JUDGE

Voting for the right Judge matters. Hillsborough County Tax Collector, Doug Belden, believes that “Melissa Polo possesses the necessary background, temperament, personal attributes and work ethic to effectively manage a courtroom while treating everyone who comes before her with dignity and respect.”

A third-generation native, Melissa Polo has been an attorney in Hillsborough County for over 18 years. From the start of her legal career as a prosecutor with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s office, Polo learned the intricate workings of the courtroom and the justice system. Polo’s varied and relevant legal experience has ranged from prosecuting hundreds of misdemeanor and felony offenses to civil litigation, first as an insurance defense attorney and eventually as a victim’s advocate. Additionally, Polo has handled a wide array of cases in private practice. Her vast experience and knowledge of courtroom procedure will enable her to be a fair and effective judge. “I am deeply honored and proud to have the overwhelming support of so many leaders, friends, and associates throughout Hillsborough County. I believe experience, temperament, and a strong work ethic are qualities necessary to serve fairly on the bench and convey equal justice under the law. I am prepared to work diligently, and with your help, I look forward to serving with honor and integrity as your next Circuit Court Judge. Thank you for your vote and support.”

Summer in a Small Coal Mining Town Called Windber Written by Dora Murray, submitted by Betsy Vallejo Editor’s note: Dora Murray was a treasured contributor in the early days of News of Kings Point. Her honest memoirs of simpler days back home in Windber, PA charmed us all. Her cousin Betsy passed this along to us. While we received it too late to publish in our July issue, we feel it is still very much worth the read. When I was a child growing up in my small coalmining town of Windber, Pa. plans for July were made months in advance. The last week in June and the first two weeks of July were reserved for Windber activities. Very few scheduled vacation plans were made for that time. The Windber Volunteer Fire Company had been selling chances for a brand new car for months to be chanced off on the Fourth of July. People came from miles around to buy chances. The Firemen also had weekly Bingo on Fridays in the Recreation Hall and reminded Bingo attendees that the monies made from the Bingo games and car chances were used for the upkeep of the fire equipment. The Fire Company also had been working on the Fourth of July Parade and invitations had been sent out to neighboring towns to participate in the parade. The Windber Era,our weekly newspaper and the daily Johnstown Tribune were carrying articles for the upcoming Windber High School class reunions. The reasoning behind planning the reunions for that time was because, after graduation, most Windberites left Windber for college, for Detroit, for Washington D.C., and other places where there were job opportunities. But just like

the swallows of Capistrano they returned for the Fourth of July celebration. Windber did not permit fireworks to be sold so the Druggist in Scalp Level sold the forbidden fireworks. Every kid in Windber knew were to go to get those forbidden items. I overheard my cousins George and Lane planning to go to purchase the fireworks. I wanted to go also. They both said, “NO”! Then I used the Grandma card threatening to tell Grandma. It worked, but Lane made me walk on the railroad ties until George made him stop. They hid them in Grandma’s dresser. I would pull out the drawer to look at them and Lane would have a fit. I am sure Grandma knew that they were there, but she never let on. The Fourth of July finally arrived. Every year my Mother got my sister and me new white shorts, white halters, a cap gun and holster. Then we went to grandma’s house to watch the parade on the corner of 11th street with the neighbors. There were marching bands from all over the area. Every volunteer fire company had a marching band, American flags fluttering beautiful in the sunlight carried proudly by each group. Daddy was the Drill Master for the Windber team. Fire trucks gleamed in the sunshine as they had been polished to a firehouse standard. Part of the joy was the fellowship with our neighbors and the goodwill of those taking part in the parade. We were generous in our applause for each group. After the parade was over people either went home for lunch or hiked up that long hill to the Recreation Park where the Windber Fire Company reigned supreme. They had all the food concessions and it was mandatory for each and

every fireman to be present and working on the Fourth of July. When the firemen’s kids were old enough they worked along side of their fathers. Daddy manned the French fries and my sister and I are spoiled forever as no one makes French fries like we ate at the park on the Fourth. There was a train that would circle the park and a swing chair. But the highlight of the day was the Fireworks. The firemen hired a professional fireworks company and no expense was spared to have a safe and spectacular

fireworks display. And then it came to an end. Fathers carried sleepy children down that long hill home. Mothers holding tired little kids’ hands on that long walk home. Teenagers laughing and jostling each other. Some of our older citizens were also walking home. There were few cars but those with room invited worn out celebrants a ride home.Love of our country united all the Wimberites, and all of us loved to celebrate her birthday. So Happy Birthday USA! God Bless America.

Winnie is an adult female Catahoula Leopard dog that has a lovely white coat with brindle patches. She is a little timid when meeting someone new, but warms quickly to gentle affection and treats. Occasionally she runs around like a spunky puppy playing ball, but likes it best when kissed and petted. She needs a home that can nurture her quiet disposition with love and attention. Winnie is current on vaccinations and has been spayed. As part of her adoption she will be microchipped. DOB: May 2, 2009.

Mona is the recent proud mom of her four babies, three of which still reside at C.A.R.E. Allie, Magnum and Silver. Mother Mona is so happy to lounge on the lanai and look over her beautiful babies. Sun City Center Duplicate Bridge News

Congratulations to Kathleen Smith, a Sun City Center resident since 2008, who recently traveled to Las Vegas where she graduated from the TAP, Teacher Accreditation Program. Kathy also became a member of the ABTA, American Bridge Teachers Association. Kathy began playing bridge in January 2009 when she took beginning bridge lessons from John Foster, SCC bridge teacher extraordinaire. Kathy was a quick learner and by summer of the same year she had joined the ACBL, American Contract Bridge League, and began playing duplicate bridge. In August of 2013 Kathy traveled to Atlanta, Georgia where she completed and graduated from the Director’s course. Kathy now regularly directs duplicate bridge games here in Sun City Center and, thanks to her latest achievement, she will begin teaching students to play, or improve, their bridge games. In October of 2013, Kathy and fellow director, Sue Batt, President of the SCC Duplicate Bridge Association, started a class in an entirely new concept of teaching bridge. Under the ACBL trademark, EasyBridge! 1 it has drawn many new players into this complex game, improving card playing and memory skills for all who have tried it. EasyBridge! 2 and 3 followed during this past summer and in October EasyBridge! 1 will begin again for new players with Kathy and Sue remaining at the helm. More News On July 17th, after playing in the Non Life Master game, novice Sun City Center duplicate bridge players, Liz Motola and Gail Neal placed first in sections A, B and C a great achievement for new players.

Sun Towers Caregiver Nominated

Sun Towers Retirement Community is proud to announce that Darian Williams has been nominated as a “Caring Champion 2014” at www.Caring.com. INSPIRATION FOR THIS NOMINATION: When Darian presents to work each day, it is apparent that she is prepared to improve the quality of our residents’ lives. Walking Happy Birthday! through our memory care community, it is Darian’s personal touch Submitted by Leslie Nield-Anderson that brings smiles to our residents and instills a peaceful feeling to any visitor. She goes the extra mile with obvious affection for her residents which is then contagious to other team members making a difference throughout our memory care community. CAREGIVER’S BEST SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES: Darian deserves the title of Caring Champion due to her neverending patience for our residents with Dementia who need continual redirecting. It is obvious when one sees her that she considers our residents her family. She is mindful of their fragile state and guides them through their day allowing them to still feel independent. Her kindness is infectious to other team members who then share her calm, nurturing way of providing care. FEEDBACK ABOUT THIS CAREGIVER: Due to the care that Darian provides in coordinating activities, which bring comfort to our residents, Pastor Warren Langer has said a number of times that visiting our Memory Care is unlike others in town. “Other communities provide a place for those with Dementia to reside, but at Sun Towers, those with Dementia are provided with a place to enjoy life.” WHAT OTHERS HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS CAREGIVER: Darian shares her infectious smile, calm demeanor and love for our residents with all team members. When I enter “her” Memory Care, I immediately take on a calm feeling. Darian has taught me along with other team members that love and patience are the Mary Arpaia celebrated her 88th birthday with pickle ball friends keys to caring for those with memory loss. on 06/06/14. Military News Michael Scionti Featured Speaker at MOWW Luncheon Story and photo B. Frank Kepley, CAPT, USN, (Ret)

The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) featured Michael Scionti, candidate for Circuit Court Judge, Group 19, at their monthly luncheon/meeting. The event was held on June 19, 2014, at the Sun City Center Freedom Plaza Club. Although running for office, politics was not discussed. Michael is a Florida native and lifelong resident of Hillsborough County. He has a B. S. from Florida State University and a J.D. from South Texas College of Law. He is a member of the Florida Bar. As a soldier and Judge Advocate, Michael has served as a military magistrate, military prosecutor and legal counsel for service members and their families. He has prosecuted violent felony offenders, white-collar corruption, and organized crime. He specialized in state and federal criminal defense. Michael has served as a State Representative, and oversaw rule of law advancements and counter-terrorism prosecutions in Afghanistan. Michael volunteered for tours of duty in Iraq from 2003 to 2008. He presided over military-commissioned war tribunals of suspected enemy prisoners of war, insurgents, and terrorists. While in Iraq he worked with then Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the State Department on issues related to access to justice in the Mideast. Their primary focus was on ensuring that Sharia Law was not going to be the rule of law. He said that their emphasis was in educating the judges and lawyers on the significance and reliability of evidence. At that time their judges were oblivious to commonly accepted evidence such as fingerprints. They also tried to assist the rest of the nation in providing pathways for the insurgents to stop fighting and rejoin the community. Michael was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals and Presidential Citation.

Sun City Center “Salutes the Athena House”

This program is to benefit our female veterans returning from war; some of our females return homeless with physical, mental and sexual abuse to overcome. Unbelievably, there is only one transitional house in this entire State open to accommodate them. Two years ago it started as an idea… and culminated in a variety show with all proceeds going to the Tampa Crossroads Athena House program. In just two weeks the show was a sell-out. Why? Quite a Man

By Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

A journey of miles and miles on roads that know you well have brought you to me. Fate is infinitely generous. She understands our need to be together; Creating circumstances - happy and sad that turn southern comfort into northern seasonal splendor.

The Course To Stay

The News of Kings Point

Within your transport, a caravan of blessings. But not everyone receives them. The things they reject Your loving heart will gift to others. Still road-weary, who but you would take me here, there and everywhere to satisfy some quirky desire? No one. Others call your name. In their dark places, your smile is needed. You must go.

He tried to blink the fear away, to hold his panicked mind at bay, while fixing now his bayonet with stinging eyes and hands of clay. A single stifled sob gave way to muffled, vain attempts to pray, the awful madness to forget, the role that poison gas would play. The trenches, in a disarray of death and dying in the fray, portended horror, grim regret; a pall above them all held sway. He had to shout without delay the dreaded “Charge!” at break of day. Despite his fear he could not let his brave men down, not them, betray. And even now, old comrades say when thinking of that fateful day: “He cowered first, with doubt, and yet no coward, there, was on display.”

At the next day’s beginning, the caravan sets out again. We pray and kiss. My road warrior, behind tinted windows another trek begins. You round the corner and quickly disappear from view. I say to myself there goes quite a man. © 2014 Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

Gay horses circling ‘round and ‘round In painted company; Now dancing, prancing off the ground To grand calliope. The playful music gathers speed; My mount picks up the pace. I urge the brilliant, gallant steed To win this wondrous race. With rapt spectators flashing by, I cling, yet try to fling My hand out in a sporting try To touch that gilded ring. So close it came the last time ‘round! Alas, ‘twas not to be. The music slowly has unwound…. Back to reality. We cannot always win the race, Nor capture envied gold, But if we’ve tried with style and grace, We’re winners, truth be told.

On this day you and I are served a taste of the vernal season. White, wispy clouds play hide ‘n seek with the sun. The sidewalk lies before you, twisting and turning at will. As far as eyes can see, your future awaits. Who knows what lies around the next bend? Ahead of me, you run as fast as little legs allow. My pace quickens... Oblivious to uncertainty, you give risk and danger no thought; The distance between us grows. As tiny feet step off the curb, I call out your name... louder and louder, again and again. At long last my voice catches up with you and registers my concern. Time stands still; Only the last whispers of a March wind can be heard. My heart is ready to file this moment under once-in-a-lifetime. You stop, frozen in place. Slowly looking back.... With great abandon the voice of a future self asks “What could possibly ruin the idyllic existence known as my childhood?” Azure eyes piercing and poised want an explanation... I pause... and decide... to save my responses for a cloudy day. © 2014 Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker IN THE LAPS OF THE GODS

AN ADDED BONUS

It stands to reason that you shouldn’t allow the success of a contract to depend on a guess when there is a way of avoiding the guess. The aim should be to remain in command at all times, and so be the master of your own fate. Take this case where West leads a heart against three notrump, and East plays the king. It is only the first trick, but the outcome rests largely on South’s play at this point. If he plays the right card, he can considerably improve his chances of making the contract,

Solutions on Page 27

and will succeed as the cards lie. But if he plays the wrong card, he must guess right later to get home safely. First, let’s see what happens if South takes the king of hearts with the ace. He can cash four diamonds, but then must guess whether to next play a spade or a club. If he guesses wrong by leading a spade, East takes the ace and returns a heart. West’s hearts thus become established, and, because West has the ace of clubs as an entry, declarer finishes down one. Of course, if South guesses right by attacking clubs before spades, he makes the contract, but the fact remains that at trick one he placed his fate in the laps of the gods. Now let’s see what happens if South allows East’s king of hearts to hold the first trick, as he should. Declarer wins East’s heart return and no longer has to guess whether to lead spades or clubs first. He is on safe ground either way. Let’s say he tackles spades first. East takes the ace but has no heart to return, and South makes four notrump. The same result accrues if South tackles clubs first. West can take the ace and establish his suit, but has no way to regain the lead later, and again South finishes with 10 tricks. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver • It was civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. who made the following sage observation: “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” • In 1811, London became the first city in the world to reach the milestone population of 1 million. • If you’re like one-third of American men, you’d like a shot at hosting “The Tonight Show.” • You might think that hot dogs are a relatively recent food offering, but you’d be wrong. The first sausages were created more than 3,500 years ago when ancient Babylonians began stuffing spiced meat into the intestines of animals. • If you hear the word “Bilbo” you might think of a famously adventurous hobbit, but a bilbo also is a finely tempered Spanish sword. • Elvis Presley reportedly was worth $10 million when he died in 1977. • In Western medicine in the 19th century, experts believed in a phenomenon called “maternal impressions,” which posited that what a pregnant woman looked at could influence the appearance of her child. This belief set off a rush of pregnant Parisian women heading to the Louvre to gaze at the lovely artworks, hoping to give birth to attractive babies. • If you were at a certain street corner in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on a certain day in 1962, you would have seen a startling thing: After plunging through the atmosphere, a 21-pound chunk of the Soviet Sputnik IV spacecraft made impact at the corner of Park Street and North 8th Street. • Half of first-time marriages in Kentucky involve teenagers. • Those who study such things say that after Paul Revere made his famous midnight ride, he billed the Massachusetts state house 10 pounds, 4 shillings to cover his expenses. Salome’s Stars

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan.19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb.18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
