Grief Cafe Open in SCC • Recent Participants Recommend It

Sun City Center residents now have two opportunities each month to participate in a relaxed conversation about loss and grief facilitated by a professional, served with refreshing beverages and delicious food. The conversations are set for a Wednesday afternoon at Sun City Center United Methodist Church and a Friday afternoon at Sun Towers beginning in late August and September. For a complete schedule of Grief Cafe openings and to reserve a space, interested persons can call 727.487.3207 or email grace@grace-terry.com. There is no cost to attend. Freewill donations are accepted to help defer costs. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of participants who attended Grief Cafe in Tampa recently said that they would definitely recommend it to others. “The purpose of Grief Cafe is to increase awareness of loss and grief with a view toward helping people make the most of their finite lives. Otherwise, Grief Cafe has no intention of leading participants towards any particular

Reservations are an absolute must. “The first ten people to make a reservation will be

seated,” Terry emphasized. “I keep the group small so that we can have a friendlier, more personal experience.” Terry, the Founder of Grief Resolution Resources of Tampa, said “Grief Cafe can be beneficial to just about everyone. Participants don’t even have to talk if they would rather just listen and enjoy the snacks and beverages.” Grief Cafe is appropriate for anyone, especially (1) Anyone who has experienced significant loss of any kind, (2) Anyone who is concerned about someone else who has experienced loss, (3) All

The News of Kings Point

The Editor’s Corner Welcome Back & Welcome Home By E. Adam Porter, Editor NOKP I was cruising through the streets of Sun City Center last week and noticed something I haven’t seen in a few months. Traffic is thickening on the main drags, and the license plate rainbow has returned. Our snowbird friends are coming home. Sure, there are always multiple different license plates represented in Kings Point – some even on the golf carts – but you can always tell the seasons are changing when the out of state plates start to outnumber the ones with the orange on them. If you are one of those folks, and if no one has said it yet, let me be the first to welcome “y’all” back here to sunny Florida. Lately, it’s been rainy Florida, but welcome back anyhow. Also, a special welcome to brand new residents of Kings Point and Sun City Center. I hear from newcomers who just discovered this publication all the time, and it’s nice to know that News of Kings Point can help you adjust to your new digs. If you are new here – or if you are just returning – pay special attention to the “33573” and Bulletin Board sections in this issue. You will see that many of the local clubs and groups are kicking off this month, and you are sure to find something that piques your interest. Also, let me encourage you to visit our website, www. NewsOfKingsPoint.com. You will find a wealth of local resources including important local phone numbers and a list of local clubs and groups. Homecomings September is also time for two very special homecomings in the Porter household. My son, Chris, is coming home on leave for the first time in over a year. He is in the USAF and currently stationed at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom. His mom and I are very proud of him, and we can’t wait to see him. He is sure in for a surprise when he sees how big

his “little” brothers are getting! And Chris is arriving just in time to put those military muscles to use helping us move. Yes, we are in the process of relocating too. We are staying local and don’t plan on leaving the central Sunshine State anytime soon, but we found a property we just can’t pass up. Not just us All this thinking about moving and homecomings got me wondering just how many of our neighbors are in the very same process. We’ve had four families on my street move in as many months. What about you? How many thousands are experiencing a homecoming after a long absence or are leaving the familiar to move to a new area? How many of those will end up in 33573? On our streets or in our neighborhoods? How can we, as good neighbors, celebrate the homecomings and make the newcomers feel welcome? What used to be commonplace hospitality seems to be fading away in our culture. I, for one, am sad to see it go. I plan to walk over as soon as we’re moved in and introduce myself to my new neighbors. But I’m also hoping they come over and do the same. To have those “across the fence” neighborly relationships that help create a community, we all have to do our part to meet halfway. Bad experiences with the occasional “neighbor from hell” may make us a bit gun shy, but it’s still better to make the effort. So, when you see that moving van pull up, don’t just peek out your blinds like Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched, stroll on over and introduce yourself. It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. And, if the worst happens and you need a helping hand, you don’t want those folks to be nothing more than mysterious faces you peek at through the drapes. You want friends. Welcome home.

A Mother’s Tears Asleep... Solitary tears must have fallen from her face and in the darkness her index fingerwiped away what remained of their swift, downward path to her pillow. In the silence of the night the pain was felt in her dreams... Like ripples on a lake created by raindrops on a cloudy day, waves of heartbreak surely awakened her. Awake... The day’s chorales went unsung because one voice was missing. Orchestrations remained unheard because one seat was empty. Same as yesterday daylight shined on the absence; No dream behind which to hide the reality of her pain. You reap what you sow... She is gone and I am her. Asleep or awake, I understand. The absence leaves me heartbroken, hurting, and tearful. The silence is now mine to deal with. Suzanne S. Austin-Hill ©2013

Squad Welcomes Three New EMTs

Submitted by: Jan Huber Asst. Chief, PR

Three volunteers from the Sun City Center Emergency Squad have recently passed the National Registry exam and are now licensed Emergency Medical Technicians. (EMTs) This intense six-month course given at Hillsborough Community College tested every aspect of their endurance, both mental and physical. We are so pleased to welcome these individuals into the EMT ranks and are grateful for their commitment to the residents of our community.

The volunteer workers at Sun Tower’s Country Store recently made a significant donation to the Sun City Center Emergency Squad. Chief Schramm explained that this generous contribution is so appreciated since the Squad operates solely by support from the community. All of the proceeds from the “Country Store” are donated to local organizations. L to R: back row: Eleanor Gottman, Herta Maxime, Virginia Watson, Chief Noreen Schramm, Harold Reid. SCC Emergency Squad “ Featured Volunteers” Submitted by Jan Huber Asst. Chief PR

Each month the Squad selects a volunteer or two to feature in their internal publication entitled “The Siren.” We wanted to share some information about these interesting volunteers with our community. This month we are featuring Toria and Rick Smith. They hail from Dublin, Ohio where they met 32 years ago and raised 2 daughters. After enduring years of Ohio’s unpleasant weather, they decided to head south in 2008 to begin their search for their perfect retirement home. Tampa was fine for a few years but then they discovered Sun City Center in 2011 and have never looked back. While attending a “Hi Neighbor” event they became fascinated with the Emergency Squad exhibit and were recruited on the spot. They joined the Squad and commenced their training in 2012. Their decision to “pay it forward” was easy and this was just the avenue to do it. Rick is a retired systems analyst for an on-line computer library center. Toria is a payroll administrator and Human Resources manager for a school district in Ohio. She continues this work from her home. Thank goodness for computers! Toria is an Emergency Medical Responder on Team 6 and also volunteers as an invaluable assistant in the PR Dept. Rick is an ambulance driver for teams 2 and 6 and also assists the manager of driver training. When not working on the Squad, they enjoy bowling, bicycling, swimming and spending time with their daughters Audra and Hannah and granddaughter Zoey. The community is indeed privileged to have such outstanding and committed people volunteering on the Emergency Squad.

Lock It Up & Don’t Leave It Out

The LEO Letter

With Deputy Jason Castillo We’ve spoken before in this space about crimes of opportunity. Many criminals are relatively lazy, and they look for the path of least resistance. This usually means open or unlocked doors. For example, recently in our community there have been

several vehicle burglaries. In these specific cases in our example, the perpetrators had been seen walking through neighborhoods, simply checking car doors as they passed by. If they found one open they would simply slip into the car and grab whatever valuables were in plain sight. You may not think people would be so brazen in our communities, but these crimes are often perpetrated in plain sight in the light of day. The victims in these cases did nothing to attract attention. They just failed to lock their car doors. Maybe they assumed it was “okay” to leave them unlocked. After all, we live in a relatively “safe” neighborhood. Perhaps they just had to “run

back inside” for a moment. It does not take very long for an opportunistic thief to slip in and grab what he or she can. Consider this… What would happen if you just slipped inside for a moment and the phone rang or you decided to take care of “one little thing” before heading back out again? Suddenly, your quick trip inside might end up being a few minutes. Plenty of time to come out and find your purse or other valuables gone. Of special interests to these types of thieves are electronic devices such as phones, tablets and portable GPS units. If you have or use any of these electronic devices or any other valuables – be sure to lock them up or stash them out of sight when you leave your car. Even if you lock it up, a thief will not

mind breaking a window to steal it. Out of sight may not mean out of danger, but, as we said in the beginning of this article, thieves can be lazy, looking for obvious or easy targets. Don’t Miss this month’s Crime Awareness Briefings I will be at the Kings Point Fiber Arts room at 1900 Clubhouse Drive on Tuesday, September 10th at 1 PM. I will be at the American Momentum Bank at 131 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. in SCC on Wednesday, September 18th at 2 PM. Hope to see you there. We will be discussing Level 1 crime in the area and answering resident questions and concerns. In subsequent months these meetings will continue to be held in Kings Point on the second Tuesday of the month and in SCC on the third Wednesday. Be safe out there!

Care For The Caregiver

Submitted by Debbie Caneen, Director of Admissions, Sun Towers As a Caregiver, the challenges presented daily can take their toll on your health. When you hear this, as most people do, you brush it off and think that this would never apply to you. You’re too busy to have a decline in your health. After all, you have to remain healthy because you are caring for someone else. The lack of oxygen to the brain during times of stress has shown to contribute to cell death in the brain and can actually cause you as a caregiver to join the increasing numbers of folks with Dementia related diseases. The statistic needs repeating: Over 65% of Caregivers predecease the person they are caring for. Imagine this: You’re driving along and your spouse asks, “What time is it? And you kindly reply “It’s 10:00 AM dear”. A few minutes later, the same question repeats itself. You again reply, but this time you realize that you feel a bit tested. Only 10 minutes have passed and you hear the same question again. Do you notice your grip on the steering wheel has tightened? Your breathing has gotten shallow and tight? You’re knuckles have actually turned white. If your loved one suffers from short-term memory loss, you will be repeating numerous things throughout the day. Do you feel stressed just thinking about this scenario? If your reaction is the same as most, you lost oxygen to the brain just reading the last

paragraph. What to do? Realize that your loved one is not doing this to you intentionally. If they have short-term memory loss, they honestly do not remember asking you what time it was ten minutes ago and they cannot help asking again and again. Trying to explain to them that they need not continue to ask you the same question over and over is a waste of your time (and oxygen) as they will not remember. That’s why you are their caregiver. Your only option is to care for yourself as you care for them. Why not redirect their thought process by asking them a question about something they may remember long ago? Start a new conversation that will take their minds off the time of day. Do you remember when we had a family picnic and all of the children played softball? While they contemplate the answer, take some deep breaths and replenish your brain cells with oxygen. Be sure to take pleasure in their reaction as they recall a special moment from the past and are able to share that with you. You may have to dig, but it will be work the hunt. Remember, no matter how many times you answer their question, if they suffer from shortterm memory deficits, they will ask again. Getting stressed will only cause you harm. Be good to yourself. After all, your loved one needs you! For more information on any of the information mentioned above, feel free to email me at SccFreeAds@TampaBay.rr.com or call 813-892-2990.

KPAL Artist of the month is Dixie Kraft Submitted by Kathy Pruschen Location: Kings Point North Clubhouse, Art Studio Dates: September 7, 2013 October 5, 2013 Dixie was born and raised in Michigan where she remained until 1982. At that time, along with her husband and two daughters, she migrated to Florida. She settled on Pine Island in Southwest Florida, first in St. James City on the South tip of the island, then in Bokeelia on the North tip. Many years working as a Dental Assistant, both chair side and front desk, she left the profession to help in her husband’s business, and help care for her aging parents. This afforded her some time to take up watercolor painting, a love she had since High School. While in Southwest Florida, she was fortunate enough to have taken workshops and classes with many talented local artists, as well as nationally known ones. In 2005, she and her newly retired husband moved to Newnan, Georgia, where she joined in the local Art Group and was invited to paint a full size Thoroughbred Colt for the 2012 “Horsey Affair”. The full size Thoroughbreds and colts were displayed on the Newnan Town Square for nearly a year, and then given back to their sponsors for display at their

Dixie Kraft

local establishments. Hers is at Talaria Farms, an Arabian horse farm and breeding facility. It was quite an honor to paint one of these fiberglass colts. Hers was used for one of the official posters, and was published in a book of all the equines that were on display. In June of 2012, she and her husband came back to Florida and settled in Oakley Green at Kings Point. Through the years, she has developed interests in mixed medium and painting watercolor on Yupo paper. She is presently painting with Diane Simon’s Thursday class and enjoying very much. Please take time to stop by the Art Studio window in the Kings Point North Clubhouse during the month of September to admire the wonderful paintings by Dixie.

Destination Fort Myers: Edison invented palm trees? Not really, but he did line the streets with them

By Eddie Dixon When was the last time you pointed the car south and visited sunny and comfortable Fort Myers? If “never” is your answer, you are missing out on a classic Florida waterfront treat. If you haven’t visited in a while, you might be surprised at some of the things you missed. If you come, be sure to head over to Estero Island and Fort Myers Beach. Gorgeous sand, glistening water and more fun than you know what to do with. Gulf coast seafood, great dining and boutique shops. Fishing charters, boat tours and dolphin cruises. And, if you are feeling really adventurous, you can hop a quick boat ride to Key West for the morning and be back by dinnertime. Call 239.472.8443 for more information and (239) 463-5733 for the Key West Cruises. For some intellectual exercise and a few adult beverages, cruise over to the Fort Myers River District. The city has been going great guns, fixing up this formerly industrial area and turning it into a tourist district (www.myriverdistrict.com). Here you will find art galleries, live theater, parks, shopping and cozy little bistro cafes. Of course, there’s history here too. Fort Myers was founded as a lonely military outpost with fewer than a dozen civilian homesteads.

Eventually, when the Seminole Wars had been won and Florida became a vital link in the Caribbean cattle trade, little Fort Myers boomed into one of two thriving Gulf Coast peninsular port towns. Well, “booming” might be a relative term. In those days Fort Myers had more in common with Western outposts like Dodge City and Santa Fe than it did with more modern metropolises. and told them what he wanted. They tried to argue, but nobody won an argument with Edison. Edison invited his friend, Henry Ford to visit Fort Myers. Ford loved the town too, and told some friends. Soon, a flood of northern families were heading south to escape the harsh winters. Many stayed, and the once-hardscrabble frontier town became an upscale vacation destination. So, feel free just to visit for the picture perfect days of cooling sea breezes, bright blue skies and a whole lot of opportunity to do “nuthin’.” But, while you are here, be sure to look around a bit and take in some local history too. You can tour Edison’s lab as well as the Ford and Edison estates and grab a bite at the Banyan Café (www. edisonfordwinterestates.org). Find it all at 2350 McGregor Boulevard. Then cruise over to the Southwest Florida Museum of History (www. swflmuseumofhistory.com) where you will find entertaining and educational dioramas and exhibits detailing Florida’s history from the prehistoric to the present. There’s a good bit here too about Florida’s frontier years, where the Cracker Peninsula was every bit as wild as John Wayne’s West. Find it at 2031 Jackson Street. Call 239.321.7430 for more info. Happy travels, folks!

and seafaring men. A bustling port and wharf area with small houses etching sections out of the swamps and lowland forests. Thomas Edison Then, showed up. Mr. Lightbulb fell in love with the rustic coastal enclave and kept coming back for more. He wanted his northern industrialist buddies to fall in love with the little town too, so he took a direct hand in giving Fort Myers an “Extreme Makeover.” Edison’s palatial garden estate remains at the center of town, a tourist attraction and all around calming and interesting place to visit. The postcard perfect lines of palm trees that run along McGregor Boulevard were his idea too. He went to the ersatz town fathers

Dollars & Sense By David Uffington

Spending Up, Savings Down

Consumers are feeling more confident about spending. So says the most recent report on consumer credit by the Federal Reserve. Jobs rates are up more than expected. Pay rates are rising. Home prices are going up. In May, the average household mortgage debt was 8.67 percent, a small increase over December 2012. Consumer debt, however, which includes credit cards, was 5.07 percent, higher than it’s been since the end of 2010. A Gallup poll in June of the average daily money habits of consumers across the country showed that the daily spending amount of $90 is higher than it’s been since 2008. These figures don’t include mortgage, vehicle or regular household bills -- only purchases at a store, restaurant or online. Mint.com, an online money site that collects information from consumers, says that since 2009, monthly household expenses have gone up from $3,870 to $4,200. Included in that is a rise in gas expenses from $110 to $198 per month. In spite of extra expenses, restaurant spending has risen from $192 per month to $212. Given the differing information (the more you look, the more varied the information you’ll find) one item from the Federal Reserve report stands out: Consumer

spending is up ... but rate of saving is down. The bottom line is that the experts can’t agree on the state of the economy, and therefore don’t know what will happen in the future. In spite of the appearance of more jobs and income, the old rules from the past few years still apply: --Save, save, save. Put money away. --Pay extra on credit cards and get them paid off. Once paid off, don’t use the cards unless you find a sale for something you need and can pay off the balance in three months. Be sure the interest you pay doesn’t come to more than you’d save by not buying on sale. --If you’re approved for a home mortgage, don’t spend up to the limit you can borrow. Save the extra money for repairs or maintenance. --If you’d like to buy a new vehicle, consider whether yours will last one more year. Keep the maintenance up on it. Shop for sales on tires, and clip coupons for oil changes. --Don’t own too many gadgets, and if you buy, don’t get the best. One step down is often good enough, including refurbished. Get a few dollars on buy-back programs when you do upgrade. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and I took antibiotics for a couple of months. I went back to the doctor and tested negative on two occasions, but I still had symptoms of an infection. I have been on an antibiotic, once a day, ever since. I am completely at a loss to know what to do next. Can you offer any suggestions? -J.T. ANSWER: It’s not normal to stay on antibiotics for as lengthy a time as you have been on them for a urinary tract infection. It’s next to impossible to have a urinary tract infection if the lab cannot substantiate that there is an infection. Ask your doctor if you can go off all antibiotics and then have a microscopic exam of your urine and have the urine cultured for bacteria. Conditions other than infection can produce symptoms similar to those of an infection -painful and frequent urination. Interstitial cystitis is such a condition. The woman (less often a man) spends much of the day and night dashing to the bathroom to empty her bladder. She does this with urgency to avoid losing urine control. It’s something that disrupts life.

A specialist can view the bladder with a scope to see if there are changes of the bladder lining that are consistent with interstitial cystitis. Treatment is not with antibiotics. It’s not an infection. A number of other medications are used. If you haven’t gotten a definitive diagnosis soon, I’d recommend you see a urologist or a gynecological urologist. The booklet on urinary tract infections provides a summary of typical signs and symptoms and the appropriate treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. © 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

FM RADIO STATION IN SUN CITY CENTER? WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK BEFORE 9/1/13!!! If you would like to have our own radio station in Sun City Center, now is the time to speak up! We need to measure our residents’ interest to report to the Community Association Board of Directors who would file an application with the FCC to be considered for a construction permit. This station, if established, will be a noncommercial low power (100 watts) FM frequency that would provide a strong signal from US Route 301 to Interstate Highway I-75 (east to west), and with equal coverage both north and south of State Route 674. Foremost in considerations for its need and benefit, however, is that in the event of a hurricane or other emergency, localized up-todate news and instructions could be broadcast to inform and advise residents about our community rather than have us wonder if the news on stations outside of Sun City Center has or will affect us. Please send a note to: Carl McGary at 730 Camellia Green Drive, Sun City Center, FL 33573. We look forward to receiving any comments or suggestions you would care to share with us about our project.” SUN. Ask Pete your questions about

prostate cancer My husband had surgery for his prostate cancer, but it came back in a year. What now? A— Unfortunately surgery

doesn’t always “cure” prostate cancer. Microscopic active cancer cells may have already escaped into the tissue around the gland before the surgery. This is why it is important to maintain active surveillance of the PSA (blood test) after surgery. If the PSA does not fall to near zero after surgery, it means there is still cancer somewhere. The patient may have to have radiation and/or hormone treatment following the surgery to make sure all the cancer is gone. It is always recommended to follow PSA levels annually after surgery to determine if the cancer has been totally eliminated.

This Is Your Life: Arabella Arnold By Spencer Faircloth Local resident, Spencer Faircloth, took on the project of interviewing local Centenarians and producing a “This is Your Life” story for these remarkable folks. In these stories he celebrates lives well lived and lifetimes of learning and growing. And speaking of stories, look for Spencer’s autobiography “From Watermelon Inspector to the White House” to be released in the coming year. Arabella Arnold, 102 years young, was born on July 25, 1910, in Clendenin, West Virginia. When you meet Arabella, you are immediately impressed by what an alert and charismatic women she is. Her apartment is like a museum with not an inch of surface space left. Arabella’s life is represented by her collections of knick-knacks of all kinds. There is a story associated with each item. Arabella wants it understood from the moment you meet her that she believes in God and is a Christian and Republican. She graduated from Clendenin High School and the John B. Rogers School of the Arts. She taught classes on Shakespeare and a combination course: expression, dramatics, and story telling. She has fond memories of her family of five children and a loving mother and father and the 17 room family mansion. She adored her father Bill and her gorgeous mother. Being “gorgeous” must run in the family, because Arabella was a Vogue model and has photos and magazine pictures to prove it. She says her father, Bill, was

an amazing man and they lived in Tokyo, Japan and Brazil. Throughout her life, she met many famous people such as the Presidents of Pakistan and Brazil. She was invited to attend the Academy Awards and had one of her poems, “The Gift” printed in the “Best Famous Poets of 1996” published by the Famous Poet Society. She also received a letter from Milton Berle for her accomplishments. Arabella says there is not a thing she would change about her life. She enjoys living in Sun City Center because it has class. She loves being with so many friends. She has one reservation and that is she will not fly any more because she does not feel safe. She has tried to guide her life on the advice her mother gave her: Remember GOD has given you 3 score and 10 years to live but, you can shorten or lengthen your life by doing God’s will.” She would give this same advice to young people today.

The Pelican Players: A Community Theatre Here For You

This summer was a busy time for the Pelican Players. Its production, The Nest and The Birdcage, an original play written and directed by Andries Oosthuizen, received kudo’s from appreciative audiences. Comments ranged from “very good performances,” and “we liked the twists and turns in the play,” to “I’m new to the area and can’t wait to see the next play.” Speaking of what’s next, the Pelican Players are busy preparing for their Fall Season. Auditions for Don’t Dress for Dinner will take place on September 10 and 12 (please see website, if interested). The play calls for six actors: three women and three men. Written by Marc Camoletti, the playwright who also wrote “Boeing, Boeing,” this riotous comedy was originally produced in France. Dealing with themes of illicit romance and questionable cuisine, the characters in this naughty farce are challenged to concoct one lie after another in order to prevent the truth about who’s romancing whom from slipping out. The play will be performed on December 6 and 7 in the Borini Theatre. Rehearsals are now underway for “An Evening with Joe.” Joe Birnbaum, for those who do not know him, is a talented actor, playwright, jokester, and story-teller, who lives in Freedom Plaza with his devoted wife Pearl. Pearl Birnbaum is on the Board of Directors and Treasurer of The Pelican Players. “An Evening with Joe” features two of Joe’s one-act plays and a conversation with the author. It will be presented on October 14 at 7:00 pm in the Banquet Room in Kings Point. Due to limited seating, tickets only are on sale in the North Club House Lobby in late September through early October. Come be a part of the action here in Sun City Center. Visit our website: www.PelicanPlayers.org.

Also at this tournament, as previously noted, was the announcement of our own John Foster’s achievement as third runner up in the Bridge teacher of the year award. Congratulations to all. Just Married

Submitted by Suzanne Maguire

Ellen Gentile & Ron Doncouse threw all planning out the window and decided on the spur of the moment to just do it. The couple called up Carol & John Roebek to meet them at Apollo Beach on Thursday eve, July 25th, where they said their own vows. Ellie & Ron both live in Kings Point, where they met in 2009 at the Thursday Night Rock & Rolling dance. Ellie is from Massachusetts and Ron is from Michigan, but according to Ron they connected at first sight. Both Ron & Ellie are very involved in Lawn Bowling, pickle ball, cards, golf, working out and dancing up a storm. We all wish them a lifetime of happiness!

Swim Dancers Pass The Jug

The Sun City Center Swim Dancers pass the Jug around – as they prepare to swim to “Little Brown Jug” in the fall swim show at The Villages. There’s Room for You! If you enjoy swimming, don’t mind getting your face wet, and can feel the rhythm why not try a practice session with the Sun City Center Swim Dancers. This is a team of women learning and using the skills of synchronized swimming together to various types of music. No! It is not exactly what you have seen if you watched the Olympics! Our local team consists of swimmers from age 55 to? Many have had synchronized skills in their “other” life and are willing and able to share their knowledge. The team swims three times a week, but realizing all SCC busy activities, a team member need only to choose one of the swim times. The pool practice times are Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm or Friday morning at 7:30 am. If you have questions, please call Susan Muise at 633-2479.

TOPS Chapter Honors Accomplishments

TOPS Chapter #FL 0407 Kings Point, honored Julia Lohn for her outstanding accomplishments, encouragement given to all, and the great example that she has been to our chapter and to the community. Julia joined TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) on May 14, 1963 in Chicago, Ill. Julia originally joined TOPS due to her up coming marriage, and wanting to lose some weight to look good. Julia found the TOPS club to be a very pleasant place, enjoyed loosing weight, and the good encouragement from the chapter and liked this new life style. Julia later moved to Kings Point, Sun City Center, Florida and became a Chapter Leader in 2003 for one year. Julia has been a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) for 28 years and in attendance with TOPS for approximately 50 years, making her journey quite an accomplishment. Our Chapter has been in existence for 32 years, has helped many individuals change their lives by eating healthier, and losing weight to their desired weight. Thru the years, we have had one Florida State Queen and two Florida State kings, one Florida State King was honored as a International Winner, and many other chapter awards. Weight loss for the chapters royalty per person, has been up to 175 1/2 pounds. We currently have 30 individuals that have lost to their desired weight and have maintained their goal weight. For further information on our TOPS chapter, please contact Josephine Moses: 813-633-2505.

Kings Point Lawn Bowling

Submitted by Suzanne Maguire Always on the lookout for a fun time during the summer blahs, the folk in white had another ritzy Dinner Party at the North Club. Judy & Dave Boyer were the suave hosts of all the festivities. The room was elegantly decorated with fresh bouquets upon brightly colored tables. Two Dinner Tables totally filled one side of the room covered with one incredible dish after another, which attracted most partiers to have second & third helpings. Upon entering the room, everyone had a “Who Am I” card attached to their back and had to ask their dinner partners questions, to get the answer. At all times the Karaoke music was on, inspiring the “Chicken Dance” and other similar tunes from the 50’s, 60s. After dinner, the entertainment continued with Pictionary, where one had to draw an object, and the rest of the gang had to guess the answer within a one-minute time limit. Needless to say, there were no “Picasso’s”! The party ended with a “Happy 44th Anniversary” cake and champagne for Jack & Jackie Heckle. A good time was had by all!

United Community Church Supports Paws for Patriots

The mission of the month of August at UCC was Paws for Patriots. Paws for Patriots is part of the Southwest Guide Dogs of Florida. Nick Olson, a volunteer at Southwest Guide Dogs, brought ambassador Bobby to the church service on August 4, to talk about the roll of guide dogs and how important they are to our veterans in need of assistance. Paws for Patriots started in 2006 to aid visually impaired veterans with professionally trained guide dogs. In addition to blinded soldiers, the program also provides assistance dogs to veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorders. Dogs have also been placed at military medical centers to spread encouragement to servicemen and women during their grueling physical therapy as they recover from their injuries. The members of the United Community Church were very generous with a contribution of over $1,200 to be given to the Southwest Guide Dogs for the Paws for Patriots.

The Streets In My Town

© 2013 Alan Breese Tisdale (used with express permission) When I first moved into Sun City Center in Florida, I took a few weeks just driving around to familiarize myself with what things of interest were here, where the places were to obtain what I might need to set up my new dwelling, and what streets should be traversed to get from where I bed down at night to wherever I might decide I needed to go on any particular day. My time-honored method of wayfinding in new venues is first and foremost the memorization of street names, then memorizing which streets cross each other, which go nowhere near where it is I might need to go, and then repeating all those pathways that become familiar. Within a few weeks, I had the basics down. Now, after a year of motoring about our fair city, I am quite confident that there are at this time no more that a handful of folks who can tell me where to go. Inasmuch as memory was part and parcel of this learning process, I am indebted to those canny folks in Marketing at Del Webb in the last century who had the foresight to lace their street grid in the design phase of the project with names that would be instantly recognizable to potential retirees from “up North.” I recognize some names for streets which I do not need particularly in my now subliminal peripheral vision approach to navigation, as being from New

England, or from states other than my home state; just don’t ask me to repeat them without my handy pullout map from the Sun City Center Directory. But, how at-home can someone from Pennsylvania be, when seeing a street named as one with which he has had intimate experience? May I submit the following: There is a street named Milford, which is the name of the town in which I grew up and from whose high school system I graduated. And Milford Street here is a dead end, which is how I viewed my hometown, leaving it for college and never going back except for infrequent visits. Then there is Valley Forge starting as soon as I drive straight out of Kings Point and cross Sun City Boulevard. Valley Forge, PA is where my wife of fortysix years and I were married, in the Washington DAR Memorial Chapel, and where our firstborn son was baptized. After our marriage, we soon left eastern PA for Pittsburgh, spending thirty-seven years there. Our home was four blocks from Bunker Hill Street, which ran in front of the Highland Park reservoir from East to West, just as Valley Forge here runs into Sun City Center’s Bunker Hill Street. Paralleling Bunker Hill Street in my new town, to the North are, first, Allegheny and then Fort Duquesna streets. In downtown Pittsburgh, Fort Duquesne (ends with an “e” rather than an “a”) Boulevard is a major street paralleling the Allegheny River

and terminating at “The Point”, which is the confluence of the Monongahela and the Allegheny rivers and the beginning of the Ohio river, from which point one can still buy a ticket to ride (in season) on the Delta Queen, a genuine Mississippi River steamboat paddling her way from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. Before we leave Pittsburgh looking for familiar Pennsylvania names also found in Sun City Center, I must mention Oakmont, the second town upstream on the south bank of the Allegheny from The Forks of the Ohio; Oakmont is a wealthy little community on a hillside overlooking the valley, and where near the top of the hill lies the Oakmont Country Club, home to several historical U.S. Open golf matches - one of the first courses Arnold Palmer played on as an up-and-coming pro. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike going east from Pittsburgh lies the town of Bedford in the southern part of the state, roughly halfway between the Ohio border to the West, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital on the Susquehanna river. Bedford is the site of one of more than fifty wooden forts built in a string from east to west across the state at the time of the French and Indian War; GE has a railroad locomotive assembly plant in Bedford. Staying on the eastbound turnpike, after a few tunnels we emerge into Pennsylvania’s Great Valley, a geological area known for such things as its fertile farmland, Distelfinks on barn

sides in the Pennsylvania Dutch country, and Philadelphia at the southwest corner of the state. Lancaster, at one time (briefly) the capital of the young United States, and Reading are two mid-sized cities in the middle of this area, Reading to the North of the Pike and Lancaster to the South. I spent a good deal of my young adulthood in this neck of the woods going to college, meeting and marrying my wife, and then motoring from Pittsburgh twice a month for many years to visit in-laws in Pottstown and Philadelphia. And lastly, although there are several minor examples of PA town and street names which may be found here near the Gulf, I will mention but one more in PA with which I had been familiar before my arrival here; and that is Lehigh, which is here a street name, and there is a University, known for it’s school of engineering. Lehigh is in Bethlehem, PA, and just a few miles away to the East is archrival LaFayette College in Easton on the Delaware River. With a canoe and lots of gas cans one could make one’s way, salmonlike, upstream on the Delaware to Milford, my hometown and where I started this discussion. So I have closed the plot then, much as a surveyor would say after going over all the property lines back to his point of beginning; from Milford southwest to Pittsburgh, east to Lancaster and the Delaware and then North back to Milford. I have in two pages just bought most of Pennsylvania!

Take advantage of easy access to locally grown, tree-ripened peaches while they are in season because peaches do not get sweeter once harvested. “Peaches shipped in from out of state are picked before fully ripe, and will soften over time, but won’t get sweeter,” explains Lynda Johnson, a nutrition and health education specialist. Due to an unusually warm spring, peaches are ripening earlier than usual. You can easily obtain locally grown fruit by visiting area orchards, roadside produce stands and farmer’s markets. For best quality, select peaches that are firm to slightly soft and free from bruises. The best sign of ripeness in a peach is a creamy or golden undertone, often called “ground color.” Fresh peach fragrance also indicates ripeness. Avoid peaches with a green ground color, as they lack flavor and usually shrivel and become tough rather than ripen. Firm, ripe peaches with good ground color will become fully ripe and soft in three to four days when kept at room temperature. Peaches are ready to eat when they give to gentle palm pressure. To store fully ripe peaches, place in the refrigerator and use within three to five days. For ease in peeling, Johnson suggests dipping peaches into boiling water for about 30 to 60 seconds, then plunging them into ice water. The peach skins will slip right off. To keep cut peaches from browning, drizzle with lemon or orange juice, or

use a commercial ascorbic-acid mixture as directed. Peaches can easily be preserved by freezing, processed using the water bath canning method or made into sweet spreads. Many enjoy preparing spicy pickled peaches or peach salsas. Peaches are low in calories and contain no saturated fats, but are packed with healthpromoting compounds, minerals and vitamins, as follows: Low Calorie and Nutritous: Fresh peaches are a moderate source of vitamin C, which has anti-oxidant effects and helps develop resistance against infectious agents. Peaches also are rich in vital minerals such as iron, fluoride and potassium. Iron is required for red blood cell formation. Fluoride is a component of bones and teeth and is essential for prevention of cavities. Potassium is a key part of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Anti-Carcinogenic: Peaches contain health-promoting polyphenol antioxidants that help protect against the growth of tumors and certain cancers. Laxative: Peaches have a high percentage of water and dietary fiber, which have laxative benefits in the digestive process. Regular consumption of peaches promotes regular and less-strenuous bowel movements. Eye Health: Peaches have carotenoids, which help protect from harmful effects of sunlight and slow or prevent the progression of eye conditions such as cataracts and night blindness. Peaches also are moderate source of vitamin A, which is essential for vision and helps maintain healthy mucus membranes and skin. Eating natural fruits rich in vitamin A is

known to offer protection from lung and oral-cavity cancers. Diuretic: Peaches have been found to have powerful diuretic properties, which help alleviate fluid retention and promote regular passage of urine. They are highly recommended for people suffering from gout and rheumatism. Anti-parasitic: Peaches help to eliminate worms from the intestinal tract, preventing many of the health problems associated with the infestation. Try this Chipotle Peach Salsa recipe as a way to add peaches to your family’s meals in a fresh, new way. CHIPOTLE PEACH SALSA 2 cups ripe peaches, diced 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup red onion, diced 1/2 cup red bell pepper, diced 1/4 cup canned chipotle chili peppers, with the liquid, seeded & minced 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic, minced 1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon honey or agave syrup 1 teaspoon fresh cilantro, basi l or flat-leaf parsley, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Delicious served over baked fish, chicken or pork. Makes 6 (1/2 cup) servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and author of seven cookbooks. Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker THE PARTSCORE SYNDROME

IN AT THE FINISH

Partscore deals lack the dramatic interest of game and slam hands, but there is often more room for good play on each side than there is in the higherlevel contracts. Considering that about half the deals in bridge contain no game for either side, lackadaisical play in such deals can prove very costly over the long haul. Take this case where South, playing rubber bridge, is in three spades. If he makes the contract, he scores 90 below the line, which puts him in position to win the rubber on the

Solutions on Page 31

next or a subsequent deal. This advantage is estimated to be worth about 200 points with both sides vulnerable. But if he goes down one, South not only loses 100 points, but also loses the 90 as well as the hidden value of the partscore. So about 400 points are at stake, and such a substantial amount should not be taken lightly. Good defense can defeat three spades. West leads the K-A of clubs, then shifts to the six of diamonds. Declarer plays the ten from dummy, and East must rise to the occasion by playing the queen on the ten! Observe what happens if East plays the ace instead. He then cannot afford a diamond continuation because of dummy’s jack. Whatever else he returns, declarer draws trumps as soon as he gains the lead, concedes a heart to the ace and later discards his third diamond on dummy’s fourth heart to make the contract. But if East plays the diamond queen on dummy’s ten, the contract cannot be made. South wins with the king, but when West later takes the lead with the ace of hearts, he returns a second diamond. This allows East to score two diamond tricks, and South goes down one. It might not look important, but East is actually about 400 points better off because of his careful defensive play. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver • It was George Bernard Shaw who made the following observation: “The longer I live the more I see that I am never wrong about anything, and that all the pains that I have so humbly taken to verify my notions have only wasted my time.” • Modern dietary trends notwithstanding, raw vegetables have not always enjoyed the healthsome reputation they now have. In medieval times, in fact, veggies would always be cooked; raw ones were considered to be bad for the humors. • Those who keep track of such things say that the Rolling Stones’ song “Satisfaction” is played on the radio in the U.S. more than 300 times every day. • One of the most notorious magic tricks performed by professionals is catching a bullet in the mouth. It’s said to be cursed, due to the fact that, over the past 400 or so years, at least 15 magicians have died in the attempt. Some of them mistakenly used live rounds instead of blanks, and one jealous wife swapped out the blanks for live rounds. One of the earliest attempters of the trick was beaten to death by a mob who believed he was in league with the devil. Cursed, though? If someone is trying to catch a bullet in the mouth, it hardly requires a curse to result in a violent end. • Portland, Ore., could just as easily have been named Boston, Oregon. The two men who named the town couldn’t decide which city back east should be the namesake, so they flipped a coin. Portland came up the winner. • Originally, the best man was supposed to serve as a sort of armed guard, in case the bride needed to be kidnapped from her disapproving parents. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Thought for the Day: “Every American carries in his bloodstream the heritage of the malcontent and the dreamer.” -Dorothy Fuldheim © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Your wise counsel continues to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan.19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb.18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
