You’ve Seen Us at Golf Cart Parades & Charity Walks Special to News of Kings Point Sometimes you see people walking down the street talking into what looks like a cell phone with an antenna as big as a fishing pole. These people also have radios in their golf carts and cars. Who are they talking to? They are probably talking to other members of the Sun City Center or Kings Point Amateur Radio Clubs. You may know them as “ham radio” guys, and if you don’t know them, you should. These are the guys you will need after a storm. When the power is out and phone service is down these guys can still communicate. In times of emergency they are able to call an ambulance, police or fire truck to your aid. Radio amateurs were the first to help bring communications back in the states affected by hurricane Katrina. Closer to home our club members assisted in the Punta Gorda disaster. Radio amateurs assist first responder groups. They

Remember Those Golf Cart Parades and Charity Walks The radio club stations their members along each route to radio for help if a situation develops. You probably have seen them in their orange shirts and baseball caps. Visitors are always welcome at the Sun City Center clubhouse Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 AM. They will be glad to show you their equipment and let you sent a message to your fiends up north or talk on the radio. Training classes for amateur radio licenses are given several times a year. Watch out or they will get you to be one of them.

Men’s Club Provides Funds for Amateur Radio Club On September 13, 2013 The Men’s Club of Sun City Center (SCC) presented a check, for $ 2,700, to representatives from the Kings Point (KP) Amateur Radio Club for the purchase of a Digital Repeater. As per Dick Bishop, Radio Club member, “The Kings Point Amateur Radio Club has undertaken a project to build and operate a digital, ham repeater system to serve Sun City Center and Southern Hillsborough County. The digital repeater system known as D-Star is a growing mode of operation in ham radio. It has the advantage of transmitting digital and voice message at the same time, plus it utilizes the Internet to link repeater coverage zones all over the world. Digital messages are sent error free and semi-encrypted making it possible to keep personal information private. The digital system has been adopted by law enforcement, weather agencies, FEMA, and many state and local Emergency Operation Centers (EOCS) for back up emergency communication needs. The

the SCC Library, and presently $4,000 is allocated for a hearing loop system in the Rollins Theatre. The Men’s Club, also, provides operating funds for the Men’s Health Project (prostate cancer), Parkinson Support Group, Hearing Loss Group, and the Neuropathy Resource Group. In addition to the above, the Club installs and maintains the Life Line Medical Alert system in residents’ homes. Life Line provides 24/7 medical alert monitoring for residents that have the system installed. Help can be summoned by simply pressing the Personal Help Button. On October 22, 2013, in appreciation for support given by residents of the Sun City Center Community, the Men’s Club is planning an open house with free ice cream, cup cakes, and entertainment at the Community Hall on South Pebble Beach Blvd. So watch for additional information from the Men’s Club. The Sun City Center Duplicate Bridge Association. will be holding an Instant Match Point Game for Gold Points on Wednesday, October 2nd. at 7:00 P.M. in the Horizon Room Beginning on Monday night October 7th., the regular weekly Monday night Open Game will resume in the Horizon Room. Game will start at 7:00 P.M. The Editor’s Corner Cheers, Boos & Pumpkin Everything By E. Adam Porter, Editor, NOKP I think everyone probably has a favorite season, and if I had to pick, autumn would be mine. I love fall! Sure, I dig the perfect spring weather here in the Sunshine State. I cherish the summer beach trips that bring the rest of the country here for weeks of summer love and sunburns. I love the crisp winter days and the endless berries fresh from the farm. And who can’t smile at the idea of wearing shorts in January? But, even with all these wonderful things about the different seasons in the state I love to call home, autumn still tops the list. Why? The reasons are endless, some big and easy to define, others tiny and somewhat intangible. The Colors of Fall? Fall is officially upon us here in central Florida, though you may not know it from the colors outside your window. While millions coast-to-coast are stepping outside to a patchwork quilt of oranges, reds, yellows and browns, here in Florida we’re mostly still green. When we go out on the boat the weather is still warm enough for brightly colored swimsuits, and the clear blue-green water is still warm enough for a swim. Sure, we might be missing out on some postcard-worthy hues in the trees and on the ground. But it is precisely that “on the ground” part I can do without. While everyone else is raking leaves, we can travel to where the color is, take our pictures and head back home where the leaves are green…and still on the trees. Football Season! I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t a football fan. Even with today’s ridiculous NFL issues – from absurd rule changes to pampered players – I still love the game. And, with all the college football available on the flatscreen, it’s easy to get my fill of the game without ever tuning in to the NFL. Plus, in college football, you never really know what might happen.

Every game really could go either way, and that makes for some entertaining matchups. Of course, no game is quite complete unless you invite a rival team’s fan(s) over and rib each other during the game. In our home the “boos” and the cheers start well before October 31. Pumpkin Everything October and November are, without a doubt, the months of the pumpkin. You can’t go anywhere without seeing a pumpkin spice this or a pumpkin flavored that. I am not a fan. But while everyone else is buying pumpkin stuff, that leaves more cherry, blueberry and apple-cinnamon stuff for me. Yum! Halloween Treats Our family went through a stage for a few years when my eldest boy was “too old” for trick-or-treating and my youngest were not quite ready. This year, we are gearing up for a fun Halloween night. But the treats are just the beginning. I have always been a huge Peanuts fan. Linus, the blanket-toting philosopher was always a favorite character. Halloween for us means cuddling up on the couch with the little ones and watching Linus and Sally once again wait faithfully in their sincere pumpkin patch, hoping for some supernatural recognition. Family Time Autumn has always just “felt” like family time. This is one of those things I can’t really explain, but it just feels that way. Maybe it’s the football parties or holiday get togethers or just those first few crisp fall days, but autumn has always motivated me to gather those I love around me and keep them just a little bit closer. Have Fun And Improve Your Memory

Submitted by Sun City Center Bridge Association Where are my car keys? I can’t remember my brother’s phone number! What was I supposed to get at the grocery store? The fear that our memory is slipping or eroding is on the minds of most of us. I have two choices. I can live with that fear every day or I can choose to fight it at every opportunity. The speed with which your brain processes information slows down with age. However, Professor Marian Diamond, Director of Lawrence Hall of Science at Berkeley University believes that “with proper stimulation, the brain can continue to develop at any age,” a fact that “has revolutionized our thinking about aging by emphasizing

Local resident, Spencer Faircloth, took on the project of interviewing local Centenarians and producing a “This is Your Life” story for these remarkable folks. In these stories he celebrates lives well lived and lifetimes of learning and growing. And speaking of stories, look for Spencer’s autobiography “From Watermelon Inspector to the White House” to be released in the coming year. Dorothy Roessel was born in 1912 in a small upstate New York town of Irondequoit near Rochester, New York. Dorothy attended and graduated from Rochester High School. She loved to read and her fondest memories

the importance of growth and learning throughout life.” Asked whether she thought that learning to play bridge would constitute stimulation, she replied, “Absolutely. Learning any new hobby and continuing the education process will stimulate the brain and the game of bridge would be a fun way to do it.” For many years, Diamond has been enthusiastically promoting her “use it or lose it” theory, encouraging her students to remain active, mentally as well as physically, for the rest of their lives. Your first step should be to let your doctor determine that you are physically healthy. A poor memory could be the result of a recent illness or even depression which sometimes can be treated

medicinally. The next key step to improving your memory is to pick out a certain activity that involves learning. The search has led a great many people to the fascinating game of bridge. Bridge has been proven to increase memory and concentration skills and helps to develop improved judgment and logic. It is low in cost and will help increase your social opportunities, providing you with the chance to meet other people, travel, make new friends with whom to attend social functions and more! You will have so much fun you won’t even remember that it’s actually good for you. Painless memory therapy – what a concept! The Sun City Center Bridge Association is offering four free “Easybridge!” lessons to introduce you to this fabulous pastime. The

lessons are for beginners and people returning to bridge after some years, or social players who want to learn modern bridge. It will be held in the Horizon Room starting Friday, October 25th from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. and will continue on successive Fridays at the same time. You will meet other new players in the community and play bridge your very first day. These lessons are open to everyone and every age, so bring all your friends and family with you and learn together. If you need a partner, someone will be there to play with you and fun is guaranteed every week! Free parking and free refreshments. growing up were the books her parents gave her for birthdays and Christmas. After high school she received her Nursing RN from New York Semeca Hospital Nursing School and worked as a nurse at the hospital for a salary of $60 a month. She married Milton Roessel, one of a family of 14 children, and they had two children, Susan and Judith. Dorothy did not work as a nurse after she and Milton had children. They have five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Dorothy worked with her husband in the family business of growing vegetables in green houses to sell to the local community. She remembers working many nights in the greenhouses all night long during the

very cold winters, common to northern New York. Dorothy considers her marriage and the birth of her children as very happy events in her life. Milton had heart problem and his doctor said he needed an operation if he wanted to live. Milton did not want the operation or medicine and lived for thirteen more years. She remembers the biggest celebration during her lifetime was events following the end of hostilities in World War One. She has enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, throughout her life, and enjoys playing today. She also enjoyed martinis until she was 95, but she admits drinking alone is not much fun. She remembers

how much she enjoyed playing cards with her mother, drinking and smoking two Camel cigarettes. She has lived in Sun City Center for 20 years and moved to Freedom Plaza 1997. She has always paid cash for everything. She remembers her husband would not buy their first home until he had the full price of $4,500. She used $1,000 she had saved to buy their furniture. Her advice to young people is to do the same – save money and pay cash for what you buy. When asked what she likes best about Sun City Center, she replied having fun and making new friends. She said she would change nothing if she had her life to live over. She is happy and satisfied with her life!

This way if telephone service is lost in Sun City Center messages can be relayed to Riverview where the phones may still operate. SCCARC club members move to the South Bay Hospital for the duration of a storm in case medical supplies need to be sent between hospitals but all other communications are down. After the storm you may need help but the road is blocked. You should look for an orange sign with an old fashioned telephone and the word EMERGENCY in someone’s house window. That is where a Radio Club member lives who can radio out to get help. There are about 100 members throughout Sun City Center and Kings Point that

have volunteered to provide this service. Their radio equipped gold carts may be able to go where another vehicle cannot. Maybe your out of town family or friends want to reach you but the phones are out. The club maintains a website in Ohio called www.sccarc.info. Your friends can leave a message on the site, which will be radioed to Sun City Center and brought to

you. The status of conditions in Sun City Center is also published on the site. Any of the stations with the orange signs or the radio club buildings will accept health and welfare messages from residents to be sent out to friends and families when phones are out. To perform their tasks several club members have taken courses sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These courses taught

them how to interact with the various agencies that are brought together by a major disaster. Every week training is held on the air that serves as a check that equipment is functioning correctly and as a practice network for passing messages is created. Several carry Hillsborough Emergency Operation Center Identification that enables them to offer help throughout the county.

Watch Your Speed

It’s October and that means we will begin to see our seasonal residents returning to Kings Point and Sun City Center. The increased traffic brings to mind an increased occurrence of traffic violations. Of particular interest to many drivers here in SCC are the fines that come with traffic violations. Some are surprised at how expensive it can be to fudge the speed limit. So let’s review the facts. Moving violations include but are not limited to speeding, red light violations and stop sign violations. That “rolling stop” or “not quite red” light can definitely come back to bite you. The fine for many moving violations is $153, but they can get much more expensive. Here is how the speeding fines break down by speed. •1 to 9 mph over posted limits is $118 • 10 to 14 mph over posted limits is $193

•15 to 19 mph over posted limits is $243 •20 to 29 mph over posted limits is $268 Once again, all of these rates are only the minimum fees. Assessed fines could be increased depending on the situation, which could include school zones, parked buses or construction zones, among other things. If you are ticketed for traveling over 30 mph over the posted limit, you will receive a mandatory court appearance. Now, you might be thinking that it’s tough to reach some of those higher fines. But consider, a marked speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Think about how easy it is to let that speedometer drift up to 40 mph. That’s 15 mph over the posted limit and a $243 fine. It sounds like a lot when you say it like that, but historically, this has been the fine LEOs in Kings Point write most often. Unfortunately, many of the folks getting the tickets are not really even aware how fast they are going. In those cases, the amount of a speeding fine can definitely come as an unpleasant surprise. Speeding violations are not the only moving violations that can get expensive. Running a stop sign or red light hit deep too. The point of these laws is that they can save lives. So, please, for your own safety, for your neighbors, your friends and your pocketbook – slow it down and take care when approaching intersections.

Submitted by Jan Huber, Asst. Chief, PR Five students have successfully completed the intense 52hour “Emergency medical Responder” course given at the Squad training center. Students are first trained and certified in CPR and proper use of an AED. Following this aspect of the course, the students studied medical and environmental emergencies, airway management, the human body, bleeding control, shock, and poisoning. Students also learned the proper technique for splinting, bandaging, back boarding and scooping a patient. Each student has now been assigned to one of eight teams and will begin a period of mentoring with an experienced ambulance crew. SCC’s Sweet Adelines

Every Tuesday evening, six women car pool from Sun City Center to Temple Terrace in Tampa, to join over 125 other singers on risers for three or more hours, rehearsing with the award-winning Toast of Tampa chorus. As members of Sweet Adelines, International, they sing a Capella, four-part harmony, barbershop style. Members range in age from 8 to 80’s, and travel for weekly rehearsals from as far north as Jacksonville, and as far south as Fort Meyers. In addition to weekly rehearsals, they have additional rehearsals and coaching sessions to master and perfect their art. This November, they will be competing with regional champions from around the world at the Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition in Hawaii. Tickets for the annual Toast of Tampa shows at the USF Concert Hall, on Saturday, October 5, either 3:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., are $25 general admission. The Sun City Center bridge community is fortunate to have three new directors and a new bridge instructor. The ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) Club Directors Course was held at the North American Bridge Championship conference in Atlanta, GA. The intense, 25 hour course, was held from July 30 to August 1 and culminated with a comprehensive test. Rosalie Murphy of the Kings Point Duplicate Bridge Association (KPDBA) and Suzanne Batt and Kathleen Smith of the Sun City Center Duplicate Bridge Club passed with flying colors. They are now certified by ACBL to direct games at the club level. Marion Winsor, a member of the KPDBA, completed the bridge instructors course and is now a certified bridge instructor. The KPDBA celebrated the accomplishments of the four bridge players with a congratulatory cake during a regularly scheduled game in the Kings Point Card Room.

South Bay Hospital hosts Shop Smart Event

South Bay Hospital is hosting a Shop Smart, Do Good event in the South Bay Hospital cafeteria and lobby on October 18th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The hospital is partnering with local independent businesses for this community event. Golf Cart Parade Update

Last year’s Golf Cart Parade netted Ron and Linda Ringenback $900 plus a trophy for winning First Place as well as Best in Show for capturing the parade theme (‘Tis the Sea-Sun). Theme for this year is Sights and Sounds of the Season! Participants in the December 7 parade will be vying for $5,000 in “best decorated” prize money being donated by Minto Communities. Holiday Walk Needs Volunteers By Phyllis Hodges

Although we’re still two months away from the Holiday Walk/ Breakfast on December 14, Sam and Joanne Sudman are starting to recruit volunteers. They need about 120 people to serve as ticket takers, greeters, 50-50 raffle ticket sellers, kitchen workers, line servers, etc. The breakfast will be served 7 a.m. to noon in the newly redecorated Florida Room on the N. Pebble Beach Central Campus. The morning work schedule is divided into two shifts. That means volunteers will work only three hours, 6 to 9 a.m. and 9 a.m. to noon. The cleanup crew begins sometime after 11:00 a.m. If you want to help, contact the Sudmans at jsudman@tampabay. rr.com to select the job best suited for you.

Hope FundVolunteers to Attend Orientation

Now that the summer programs are completed, it’s time to prepare for the main school season at Bethune Park in Wimauma, where The Hope Fund, an all volunteer, 501 (c)(3) organization, conducts after-school programs for at-risk children. An orientation meeting for volunteers, whether you’ve been with us awhile or will be new this year, will take place on Wednesday, October 30th at 1:00 PM at the Wimauma Senior Center. The only requirement for volunteering is that you enjoy children and want to help give those less fortunate get a good start in life. Volunteers are needed, starting Nov. 4th, 5th, and 6th, to read to the children on Mondays; on Tuesdays, to help with a running program and an art class; and on Wednesdays, to work with the children as a mentor or tutors. All programs last one hour per week. The Hope Fund also sponsors the summer program, field trips, sex and drug education for older children, guest speakers, and helping those with special needs, and The Fund also gives out scholarships to those families that cannot afford the full cost of the tuition for their children. Funds for the programs are raised through tax-deductible donations, fundraisers, and grants. The main fundraiser is Breakfast and Bingo, which is held twice a year. The next one is coming up on Saturday, November 9th at Community Hall from 8:30 to 11 AM, so save the date. More information will be forthcoming. Featured Photographer at the SCC Chamber of Commerce

George Seeley is the Sun City Center Photo Club’s featured photographer for the October photo display at the SCC Chamber of Commerce. This is part of a series of photographic displays at the SCC Chamber of Commerce at 1651 Sun City Center Plaza. George’s exhibit is entitled Nature’s Beauty. His interest in photography was sparked by the animals and scenery around him. George has been a member of the SCC Photo Club for five years and currently serves as its president. He has received many awards in local and statewide competitions. His photos have placed high in Fun Fest voting as well. Come to the opening of his display at the SCC Chamber of Commerce between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on October 10th to meet him and enjoy some wine and cheese. SCC Photo Club Meets Tuesday, October 8 at 6:30 pm

Can blurry photos be good? Photographer Doug Moore will talk about when you want blur and how to get it and when you don’t want blur and how to avoid it. Blur is a way for photographers to capture movement in images. Many types of photographs, not just sports, can benefit from the emphasis of movement in a shot – even when the movement is very small, slow and/or subtle. Doug will show examples of the effective use of blur and will talk about how to achieve those effects. Community members and guests are welcome to attend. The club invites area residents who now play social (party) bridge to practice using duplicate bidding boxes with some review. Boy Scouts of America Speak at Men’s Club

BSA District Director Steve Cox and BSA District Executive Anthony Rabago of the BSA Gulf Ridge Council spoke at the Men’s Club Meeting on August 21,2013. The speakers outlined the programs available for boys of all ages. The speakers provided information on how the BSA was funded and how the funds were used to support the scout councils. They also touched on the positive changes made in the Gulf Ridge Council over the last several years. Kings Point Italian Cultural Club News

AMICI, the Kings Point Italian Cultural Club, will begin its new season with opera. Peggy Burgess will continue to educate and amuse with stories about and from the opera world. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 25th at 7pm in the Ripple Room of the Kings Point Clubhouse. Members, guests and residents in the Sun City Center area are invited to attend. Non-members are asked for a $3 donation. An exciting season is planned for AMICI including entertainment, cultural evenings, and speakers on a wide range of subjects tied to Italy. October is here and our snowbirds are returning. Those of us who have been here all summer have been busy planning a fun-filled jazz season. The United Community Church College held an open house on September 10, 2013. One hundred instructors and prospective students came for refreshments and to talk about the exciting classes being offered in October. Community Generosity of Applebees

Karl Meyers, Manager of Applebees, Big Bend Road, is pictured presenting a $1,000 check to Earl Gall of the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center. The UMC Church partners with Applebees in the Dining Out Program where members of the congregation dine at Applebees and a percentage of the receipt is donated back to the church to support missions. This generous donation will help to support trips to Peru, Cuba and Uganda, Africa.

Beth Israel Temple Celebrates Sukkot

In preparation for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, members of Beth Israel Men’s Club erected a sukkah at the Temple. The roof of the temporary shelter was covered with palm fronds, and Sisterhood members then decorated the interior. Sukkot is a joyous holiday that commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the dessert, living in temporary shelters. The word “Sukkot” means “booths” which refers to the temporary dwellings. Agriculturally, Sukkot was the harvest festival. The holiday lasts for seven days. On September 19, Beth Israel held Sukkot services, after which the congregation was served refreshments in the sukkah. Joseph Munoz helps his dad Ray erect the Beth Israel sukkah. Helping Joseph are Paul Grossman, Bob Conte, Mel Feder, Bob Guzinsky, Harrie Jones, Steve Blesofsky, Greg Balent, and Ralph Shaw Sisterhood members Marsha Feder, Janet Corin, Rochelle Lafer, Sandra Hurwitz, Nina Malinak, Ronni Neckes, Sanda Abramson and Ellen Stein are busy decorating the sukkah.

United Community Church Honors First Responders

On Sunday, September 15, The United Community Church held a service in memory of the lives lost on 9/11 and in honor of the first responders of today. As Robert Sheldon played the bagpipes, Jean Simpson, interim pastor, welcomed a procession consisting of Hillsborough County Sheriffs Deputies, Fire Fighters from station 28 in Sun City Center, the director of South Bay Emergency Room and volunteers of the Sun City Center Emergency Squad. A candle was lit in remembrance of all who suffered and died on September 11, 2001 and in honor of all who, in 2013, put their lives on the line every day to respond to others who are in need of help.

Prince of Peace Catholic Church October Events

Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center will hold its annual pet blessing ceremony on Friday, October 4th at 12:00 noon outside of the church under the trees. The Sun City Chapter of the Military Officers of the World Wars (MOWW), was recently presented a national award for the Best Mid-Sized MOWW Chapter at their National Convention held in Dallas, Texas, from August 14 – 17. This is the third consecutive year that the local chapter has received the award. Dave Floyd Addresses MOAA on SCC Renovations B. Frank Kepley, CAPT, USN, (Ret)

Dave Floyd, Sun City Center Community Association Board of Directors member (Corporate Secretary-Director) and MOAA Board of Directors member, was the featured speaker at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) monthly luncheon, which took place at the Sun City Center (SCC) North Side Eberhardt Building on September 4th, 2013. David earned a B.A. in Biology at the University of Massachusetts in 1967, a MS in Chemistry at Suffolk University, Boston MA in 1972 and a MA in Biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Photo by Frank Kepley Serving in his position as a CA Dave Floyd, Corporate board member, Dave has been Secretary-Director, SCC CA intricately involved in the development and implementation of the numerous changes and additions currently being planned for the SCC administrative and recreational areas. Dave outlined the various proposals under consideration and brought the MOAA members up to date on the progress of the project. The presentation was comprehensive and was well received by the MOAA members. 

COL John R. Robinson, USA, United States Central Command, is the keynote speaker for the Silver Osprey Squadron’s Friday, October 11 luncheon meeting. COL Robinson is Director of Communication for U.S. Central Command. His subject is “The Mission of U.S. Central Command”. Their area of responsibility is 20 countries in the central area of the globe. In 1987 COL Robinson was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant from the Army ROTC. He holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Marshall University and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His first assignment was as a Field Artillery officer from 1987 to 1993. From there, he filled many army communication assignments, ranging from Africa to Europe and Iraq. In 2003, he served as Deputy Director of Central Command Public Affairs and provided public affairs counsel to U.S. Central Command staff. From 2005 to 2008, he served in the Pentagon where he managed nearly all U.S. Army media, becoming the Army Public Affairs Director of Planning. COL Robinson assumed his current duties as Director of Communication at U.S. CENTCOM in August 2010. You do not need to be former military to attend. The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) will present entertainment featuring a program entitled Masquerade on Sunday, October 6th from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Community Hall, located at 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. The proceeds of the annual event will benefit the various MFST programs, which include Operation Warm Heart, Paws for Patriots, Wounded Warriors and others. The Masquerade performers have opened for nationally known acts such as Tanya Tucker, Little Texas, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and George Thorogood. Freedom Plaza News Submitted by MJ Rice The celebration of the 21st Anniversary of Freedom Plaza, the Brookdale Senior Living Community close by your neighborhood, has come and gone. The week of September 16 started with a bang as the Freedom Frolics opened a 3-day run. “The Best Little Horse Town in Texas”, the latest Peggy Burgess production came alive as familiar Western characters filled the stage and the auditorium with laughter. Who can forget the posse, who almost stole the show as they galloped in front of the stage with their walkers, cleverly disguised as horses by the talented men of FP Woodshop crew. Job well done by all the participants, the actors on stage, the narrators, the voice over readers, the backstage crew and all those who participated in Ms. Peggy’s 21st production of the famed “Freedom Frolics. Proceeds support the Freedom Plaza Scholarship Fund. Coming Soon The Walk For Alzheimer’s October 26, Freedom Plaza’s Freedom Marchers will once again lead the Walk for Alzheimer’s. The Walk, after a hiatus was brought back to Sun City Center five years ago through the efforts of Connie Lesko, Business Coordinator at Freedom Plaza. Connie works diligently to make the annual Walk a successful event. The Sun City Center community joins in annually to contribute to the Alzheimer’s Foundation as they try to find a cure for the disease

When this writer first began attending national bridge tournaments back in the 1960s, virtually all the players were from one of the American Contract Bridge League’s four member countries -- the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. Today, all that has changed. National tournaments now attract scores of the world’s top players from Europe, South America and the Far East -including mainland China. The result has been that many of the ACBL’s most prestigious titles lately have been captured by visiting internationalists either independently or in concert

Americans Ralph Katz and George Jacobs teamed up with four of the 2000 Olympiad champions, Giorgio Duboin, Alfredo Versace, Lorenzo Lauria and Norberto Bocchi of Italy, and scored a 48-IMP victory in the final over an upstart team captained by Mike Moss. Today’s deal from the final shows the Italians in action. Bocchi’s opening two-spade bid showed spades and an unspecified second suit. West doubled for takeout, and when East left the double in for penalties, Bocchi retreated to his other suit. West doubled this for penalties, and Duboin now made an excellent decision to leave his partner in diamonds despite holding a significantly better spade, as East was already known to be well-heeled in spades. Three diamonds proved impossible to beat. Bocchi ruffed the heart lead and conceded a spade to West’s ace, and West could score only his K-Q of diamonds from that point on. So the contract was made with an overtrick for a score of +570. At the other table, the American North played in four hearts, down three, for -150. This law was unused and nearly forgotten for centuries. Then, in 1817, a man named Abraham Thornton was charged with murder in the death of a young woman named Mary Ashford. The evidence against Thornton was nearly overwhelming, but he claimed the right to trial by battle against his accuser. Since the law was still on the books, the court decided it had no choice but to grant his request. Thornton’s accuser was William Ashford, the victim’s brother, but since he declined to appear on the field of battle, Thornton was freed. Shortly thereafter, trail by battle was officially abolished in the country. • Cats can bark, too. • With 1.45 million lightning strikes per year, Florida experiences more lightning than any other state in the country.
