Fall Expo Kicks Off The Season

Successful Event Fills The Borini Theatre

By NOKP Staff On Friday, September 26, nearly 80 local businesses and civic organizations set up shop in the Borini Theatre at the Kings Point North Clubhouse for the annual Kings Point Fall Expo. Before they even reached the Borini, guests were greeted by a massive display of fresh produce courtesy of Wolfe’s

Produce and tempted by the enticing aroma from the food truck parked under the clubhouse breezeway. Inside, hundreds of Kings Point residents strolled through the theatre, chatting with reps, learning about the community and devouring tasty brownies, cookies, candy and other Continued on Page 2

Roundtree Named Golf Parade Grand Marshal By Phyllis Hodges The Golf Cart Parade Committee has selected Reggie Roundtree as Grand Marshal for the December 13 parade. Dave Birkett, committee chairman, said Reggie, News Anchor/Reporter with WTSP 10, is enthusiastic about joining us for this year’s holiday event. Reggie has won many Emmy nominations and several AP awards. He also received the Officer of the Year Medal of Valor when he was a Miami Police officer before starting his television career in Miami. Since coming to WTSP over 20 years ago, Reggie has been very active in the Tampa Bay community and participates in many charitable events. Grand Marshals for the past three holiday cart parades were Steve Jerve, NBC (2011); Ann Marie Leblanc, SCC community activist (2012), and Charley Belcher, FOX (2013). The theme for this year’s parade is “Holiday Fun in the Sun.” This is SCC’s fourth consecutive golf cart parade. Last year’s parade attracted 131 participants and filled thousands of spectators with the holiday spirit.

South Shore Puppy Raisers Meet in SCC By Phyllis Hodges September 6 was a busy Saturday at the home of Nancy and George Cottrell on North Lake(SCC). Seven young dogs and their hosts attended the area meeting of South Shore Puppy Raisers of Southeastern Guide Dogs. The dogs and their hosts gathered to interact with other puppy raisers during the day. First order of the day was an explanation by Area Coordinator Sue Croley that the agenda would include obedience work and a course of distractions. The plan also included golf cart and pontoon rides to expose the dogs to these unique situations. Puppy raisers keep young dogs in their home for the first year or so, training them in basic commands and socialization before they enter a formal program at a Southeastern training facility (Palmetto, Sarasota, Bradenton or St. Petersburg). The training program is rigorous as it prepares them for their roles as service dogs for the visually impaired and veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Some are trained as Facility Therapy dogs. Southeastern Guide Dogs(www.

The Editor’s Corner

Dads Matter

By E. Adam Porter, Editor in Chief, NOKP Dads Matter. Recently, I was invited to cover an informational meeting for fathers of students at a local elementary school. The school participates in a program called Watch D.O.G.S., which offers dads and granddads the opportunity to volunteer at their child’s school. The kids absolutely love it, and, talking with the guys at that meeting, it was clear the dads and granddads love it too. One guy told a story that really stuck with me, about how his daughter had been ambivalent about her education. Then he started showing up and volunteering at the school. Just his being there changed his daughter’s attitude. Now, her grades are up, and she’s excited about school. Better still, they are closer than ever before, simply because Dad Showed Interest. And, though it does change, this dynamic doesn’t disappear when Junior or Princess move out, or when they start their own families. Grown Kids still need to know dad cares. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 million children in America—that’s one out of three— live in a home absent their biological father. While, in certain cases, that might be for the best, overall, this statistic describes a social, economic and generational crisis. In any fair assessment of nearly every social issue facing America today, there is a “father factor.” Children with involved fathers do better across the board than their peers without dad around. Poverty, maternal health, child health, incarceration, crime, teen pregnancy, child abuse, drug abuse, alcoholism, education, even obesity. Kids without dads fair worse in every single one of these categories. Every. Single. One. Some people want to put the pressure to “fix this” back on the

moms. Yes, moms are awesome. No denying that. But, dad, don’t you think mom has enough on her plate without shouldering your responsibility too? Sure, moms usually have more time with the kids. And, yes, the legal system, particularly in Florida, is often unfair to fathers who do want to be a part of their child’s life. But those are excuses. Men look for ways to make it work, not reasons why it won’t. And I’m not talking about your relationship with your child’s mother. That’s a separate issue. No matter how things go with her, you are your child’s father—forever. From the moment those tiny little eyes focus on you for the first time, until their last breath, you are “Dad.” Their understanding of what it means to be a father is based primarily on how you live that role. Nobody else can take that spot … unless you give it away. According to the Department of Education, father involvement in schools is associated with the higher likelihood of a student getting mostly A’s. In addition, when dad is involved, kids are physically and emotionally healthier, more responsible and more engaged in behaviors that will benefit them short and long-term. Dads matter. As a father of three, with one grown and on his own and two more just starting out in life, I learn what that means all over again every day. Every time my “big one” makes the right decision because of something he learned from me … and every time he doesn’t. Every time my little guys do something to make me smile or make my hair turn grayer. In those moments I realize and I remember. Dads matter. Granddads Too. *Statistics collected by the National Fatherhood Initiative from government sources and published, peer viewed studies.

Submitted by: Rosie Korfant, JSA Medical Group Activities Coordinator So, what do chocolate and fitness have in common, you ask? How about YOU? Yes, YOU don’t want to live in a world without chocolate (unless, of course, if you’re highly allergic to the stuff—chocolate that is.) Now fitness, that’s another matter altogether. We put it off for as long as we possibly can, but chocolate? There’s the stuff that dreams are made of. Let me at it, you say? OK—so let’s say you can’t, just can’t possibly put off that urge for chocolate any longer. Just go for it! Yep—I said the words OUT LOUD! GO FOR IT! I’m talking about chocolate in the purest and least refined state—the part of dark chocolate that’s full of flavanols, which give you lots of health benefits— eaten in moderation, of course.

(Do we ALWAYS have to put limitations out there?) YES! We do-- because left to our own devices, we’d be at it all day and just forget about the fitness part of the equation. Heavy fitness exercises can put a stress on the body that release free radicals which then attach to the cells of the body, thereby creating cell damage. Then along comes that rich, dark, pure chocolate that has loads of falvanol content, not a refined candy bar. High levels of these flavanols found in cocoa help enzyme activity in the tummy that support the breakdown of fat and carbs in the body. So, let’s get in tune with a high efficiency, fat burning moderate consumption of the pure chocolate combined with a fitness plan that just plain works! You might even try one of our FREE weekly classes; Sit & Be Fit, Yoga, Silver Sneakers, or one of the dance classes (line dance or salsa dance).Any of these could bring those desired results. Just remember; only use dark chocolate with real cocoa! Save the other stuff for Halloween! *Source: Penn State, by Gu, et al, study by Davison, et al, Fitness magazine, and Brad Gouthro Fitness

More Bridge News on Page 30 Easybridge! 1 is Back in Town! Game of Bridge Enters a New Period of Popularity The world’s most popular game, bridge, is attracting new players in Sun City Center. Boomers and retirees are rediscovering the old favorite in large numbers. They are finding that bridge provides the mental challenge and social opportunities not provided by many other leisure activities. Busy folks, in their fifties and older, are conscious of the need to exercise their brains as well as their biceps.

Bridge is a perfect solution. Bridge is the most popular card game in the world for good reason. Bridge opens social doors everywhere. Almost every town in the USA and Canada has a local bridge club where games are played several times each week. Partners are available for the asking. New friendships are built among like-minded people. Bridge is not only a social

opportunity, but a fascinating challenge that keeps players growing mentally. The old saying “use it or lose it” applies to the brain as well as the body. People who play bridge regularly actually show heightened mental activity according to several tests. AARP strongly recommends the mental challenge that bridge offers.

Now you can join in also. Sun City Center is offering a series of four modern bridge lessons free to introduce even more players to the game. For further information, call Kathy Smith at 813-480-3368. Or just come over to the Horizon Room in the Atrium on Wednesday, October 15, from 8:30-11am to join the fun.www.sunccbridge.com.

U.S. Coast Guard Speaks at The Men’s Club September Meeting

Submitted by John Armstrong, Men’s Club of SCC VP Membership

U.S Coast Guard LCMDR Thomas Combs, from the Clearwater Coast Guard Air Station spoke to the Men’s Club at their September Meeting. Commander Combs explained the responsibilities of the Air Station and how the U.S. corporates with the Bahamian, Turks and Kakos governments in the war on drugs. The Clearwater Air Station covers Zone 7, which is responsible for most of the Caribbean. He showed a number slides of the drug boats called “go fast” and “several slides of drug boats that were designed to mimic submarines, which are hard to detect on radar.” The Clearwater Air Station is also active in air/sea rescues. In 2013 the Air Station saved more than 915 lives. Commander Combs answered a number of questions for the audience before concluding his presentation. Banquet Masters served a buffet lunch, followed by a short business meeting. The next Men’s Club meeting is October 15, 2014, 11:30 am in The Community Hall at 1910 South Pebble Beach Blvd. After the first of October 2014, be sure to watch for your Club email from sccmensclub@gmail.com for your Men’s Club News Letter and opportunity to make your reservation. So come one come all.

Murder is in the air and you may be the one to solve the mystery! Join the Art Club in Sun City Center at the Community Hall on Wednesday, October 15 as they present “Pasta, Passion and Pistols” a dinner theater production. A 1930’s restaurant/speakeasy is the location as the heirs of Pepi Roni gather to mourn and discuss his murder. Was it Mama Rosa, the widow who suffered through a less than ideal marriage, Angel their daughter who rebelled against the ”old” ideas of her parents and wanted to be her own boss, or their son, Marco who hated the restaurant business and wanted to be a soccer star. Perhaps Rocco, the twin brother, who held a grudge for 30 years did the deed or his sultry Italian fiancée, Tara. Maybe Bo Jalais, the ambitious French wine maker or Patsy Ditali the cousin are guilty. Come at 5:30 P.M. and help solve this “who-done-it” as you enjoy a three-course Italian dinner. Tickets are available at the Community Hall on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 A.M.-noon. Price for the dinner and theater is $30/person. 1930’s costumes are encouraged but not necessary. Prizes will be given for the best costumes and to the expert Sherlock Holmes in attendance. For additional information, call Marsha at 813-938-5100.

Sun City Center Photo Club Meeting Tuesday October 14 at 6:30 PM

Love those aerial photos? Want to know more about them? Mary Whitworth, the BKV pilot who charted her own course with aerial photography, will be the featured speaker at the October 14th meeting of the Sun City Center Photo Club. Ms. Whitworth is President of Florida Aerial Services Team (F.A.S.T.) and chose Brooksville – Tampa Bay Regional Airport (BKV) as her airplane’s home base. Mary owns a Cessna 210, and her main business is aerial photography of progress on construction projects. Flying about 40 hours per week (weather permitting) in a Cessna 210 with good speed and range gives Whitworth the ability to cover the entire state of Florida. While flying, Mary noticed a sand trap shaped like the letter “B”, so she photographed it. That was the beginning of her exciting business idea. It took her over 400 hours and another year to finish the entire alphabet, upper and lower case. Copyrighted, she has arranged the letters into words, names and sayings created by using these Photo by Terre Chochran letters. The United Methodist Church Presents

St. Anne Catholic Church Hosts a Multicultural Celebration

Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage began in June 2014 in Mexico. Since then, the icon of Our Lady has been received by several parishes in the St. Petersburg Diocese. On September 20th St. Anne Catholic Church-Ruskin received the icon from St. Francis of Assisi Church and began their parish multicultural celebration to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. Very Reverend John McEvoy, V.F. and Monsignor Antonio Diez began with the recitation of the Rosary and procession of Our Lady of Guadalupe icon with the Mariachi Band and Mexican Matachines dancers. A Mass with a special liturgy followed the procession. During the liturgy Father John told the story of the five apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Juan Diego in December 1531. He also described and explained the meanings of her beautiful mantle and tunic. After Mass, the Parish Pastoral Council, along with many parish volunteers, hosted dinner for all that attended the celebration. Throughout the week of September 26th the Parish continued to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe with special prayers, recitation of the Rosary, and Mass each day as part of this pilgrimage celebration. The Emmaus Prayer Group, the Knights of Columbus, the Matrimonio Dialogo Sequimiento, the Spanish Adoration Society, and members of the Filipino Community participated in this weeklong celebration. Many blessings have been bestowed upon the Parish of St. Anne during this week. The Pilgrimage will end on October 11th at the Cathedral of St. Jude in St. Petersburg.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker THE BATTLE FOR TRUMP CONTROL

SINGER ON THE CIRCUIT

Trump control is often a decisive factor in the play of suit contracts. Whenever possible, the defenders try to run declarer out of trumps so that they can eventually cash their tricks in the side suits. At the same time, declarer tries to maintain control over the trump suit in order to withstand this attack. Consider this deal where trump control plays a key role. West leads the king of hearts and continues with the ace. After declarer ruffs, he has four trumps left, and so does West. If South were now to play the ace and another trump, he

Solutions on Page 31

would lose control of the hand and take a bad beating. West would cash the K-Q of trumps and play another heart. When South ruffed, leaving West with the only remaining trump, the rest of West’s hearts would become tricks, and declarer would go down four! To forestall this, South leads the nine of spades at trick three, not the ace. If West ducks, South gets home safely by cashing the ace and then leading his winners in the side suits. So let’s say West takes the nine with the queen. How does West then proceed? This is a crucial decision, for West’s next play determines the outcome. Since dummy can ruff a heart continuation, West might decide to make a neutral return, such as a diamond or a club. If he did this, declarer would win and play the ten of spades in order to maintain trump control. Whether West won the ten with the king or decided to let the ten hold, the contract could no longer be defeated. But if West, upon taking the nine of spades with the queen, returns another heart, the contract cannot be made. The old bugaboo against giving declarer a ruff-and-discard does not apply here. In fact, it will cause South endless pain and suffering, regardless of which hand he chooses to ruff in. Indeed, the best South can do against this defense is to settle for down one. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ice Cream & Me

Behind the glass cylindrical containers of colorful and curious concoctions clamor for attention like children. Old favorites, more mellow and mature, do not have to resort to such antics. Hands pressed against the barrier that separates them from me. Eyes open wide try to capture what only the tongue can. Some wear deep, deep scars of metal scoops mangling their surfaces. While others happily await such loving abuse. Waffle and sugar compete with cake and cup for the privilege of supporting these creamy wonders. But, New Age temptations are powerless against decades of devotion. A scoop of vanilla , the one with the black specks, cradled in a sugary, conical receptacle gently rises above the glass hurdle to meet me. Already, a milky traveler tries to assault the protective paper. Quickly peeled off, the tongue saves that which could have been lost and attacks the flecked joy. Alternating licks and bites pare this frozen sensation down to near nothingness. A hole, lifted hand and pursed lips squash the plan of that which playfully tries to remain hidden.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov.21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s also a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan.19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Because hearing loss usually occurs over time, most people are not aware they have a problem until someone else brings it to their attention.
