“Hi, Neighbor!” is Happening November 5

If you live in Sun City Center, this is the one annual event you do not want to miss! By Uta Kuhn “Hi Neighbor” was initiated in 1962 by Del Webb Corporation as a way of bringing all the new residents together. It included entertainment and food and gave new residents an opportunity to get to know one another. About 12 years ago, John Bowker came up with the idea that the event could be used to introduce residents to all the clubs and groups in Sun City Center. This has now become an annual event and keeps getting bigger as more new residents are making SCC their new home and more clubs are springing up. So, even if you don’t know what you might be interested in, you are encouraged to attend “Hi, Neighbor!” to find out all about the numerous clubs which are available to you. There will be representatives from each club available to answer all of your questions. The list of clubs includes some of the following: sewing, volleyball, dance clubs, card clubs, hiking club, photo club, garden club, archery club, tennis club, ceramics club, two computer clubs, and the list goes on and on. So as you can see there is something for everyone. Whatever your interests might be, you’ll be able to find the club represented.

Treasurer’s Report

President’s Report By CA President David Floyd 2016 BUDGET The 2016 Budget was approved at the October Board Meeting. There will not be a dues increase for 2016. Thank you to Lyn Reitz and her staff and our Treasurer Neil Rothfeld who managed our expenses so well. SURVEYING OF CA FACILITIES The CA facilities used by Clubs and Organizations are owned and operated by the Sun City Center Community Association. The Community Association is presently measuring all spaces and rooms in the CA buildings. We are doing this to help our planning committee plan for the future and to assess the space needed for individual clubs. This will be an ongoing project and is needed to properly assign space. In order to do this project properly, we need accurate information about clubs and organizations and their room usage. We have begun to collect information on club membership, room usage, schedules, and specific club needs such as special equipment, utilities or other accommodations. We will in the future be introducing a “sign in” process for clubs using CA space. This will enable us to get a more accurate picture of how our facilities are being utilized. This project will take a year to complete and allow us to better accommodate our clubs. MEMBERS IDENTIFICATION CARDS We have installed signage on all doors to buildings and clubrooms that states that membership identification is required to enter the facility. Just a reminder to all -- your CA I.D. card is required for all club meetings and CA sponsored events except for open events, entertainment shows and National Organization Meetings. Kings point and Freedom Plaza members of clubs must display their Kings Point ID or Freedom Plaza Access ID. Persons without identification may be asked to leave. ALCOHOL AT EVENTS HELD AT THE CA FACILITIES The Florida laws on alcohol consumption at events were changed this year and new regulations are now in effect. These changes will affect how alcohol is present at club and organization events held on Community Association property. Because of new licensing regulations the Community Association will now have strict limits on such events. Your directors have changed our CA policies to meet the new requirements. For the great majority of our events there will be no changes. BYOB events may still be held. Alcohol sales, including “alcohol included in the ticket price”, will no longer be an option for any event. Clubs may not offer alcohol at a paid event even if the alcohol is donated by a club member. Clubs may still raffle “baskets of cheer”. Please check with the CA if your organization is planning an event. NEW CAFÉ Plans were finalized for the new café and the bid packages were sent out. We have received the bids from the contractors and they will be reviewed by TPO who will make recommendations to the Board. We plan to start construction in 2015 with expected completion in the first half of 2016. MEDIANS The Median Project for North Pebble Beach Blvd. is moving forward. We will be converting three more medians to enhanced Florida friendly landscaping. JULY 4th 2016 There will be no fireworks in 2016. Our Community Breakfast will be held as usual. Your Community Association is planning a member/family/guest event for our CA Members in the afternoon to celebrate the 4th. A CA I.D. card or guest pass will be required to attend this event. Details will be announced at a later date. Our thanks to Chuck and Chris Collett who have agreed to chair the afternoon event.

By Neil Rothfeld The 2016 budget will not have any increase in the dues. They will remain at $270 per member. There is no increase for the Operating Fund because we applied a surplus of $233,307 to the 2016 budget to help eliminate any dues increase. Without applying the surplus, the dues increase would have been $21. The expenses for the 2016 budget are $132,700 more than the 2015 budget and the income is $15,600 more. The expenses increased because we have additional facilities, Wi-Fi for all the campuses and

have provided in the budget the cost of furnishing the café. This budget will continue the high standards of maintenance, repairs and service that our residents are accustomed to. I want to thank the Budget Committee, Ed Barnes, Chairman, Gene Morris and Bob Deutel, Lyn Reitz, Community Manager, and Stacie Schmidt, the Association’s Accountant, for all their time and effort that went into the preparation of the budget.

What’s New at the Library?

By Elaine Birkinshaw Because our bookstore overfloweth with all of the generous donations we have received from the community, we will be having an in-house book sale during the week of November 9 through the 13, just in time for some early holiday shopping. This special sale will feature beautiful hardcover fiction for the bargain price of three for $1, and 20-cent paperbacks. Most of these books are former bestsellers from your favorite authors. Because of limited space, we will be replenishing our stock as the week goes on, so you may want to come more than once to see what treasures will be revealed. The long-awaited next installment of the Maggie Hope series, Mrs. Roosevelt’s Confidante, is now available. Maggie Hope is a British-born American citizen and brilliant mathematician who saves the Prime Minister from assassination in the first novel of the series. As Maggie becomes a full-fledged spy, she is thrown into dangerous situations using her code-breaking skills to gather vital information for the Allies. In this fifth novel of the series, Maggie accompanies the Prime Minister to Washington, D.C. just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor for a meeting with President Roosevelt. When Mrs. Roosevelt’s aide is murdered, Maggie is drawn into a web of intrigue where she discovers a shocking conspiracy. Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir Eat, Pray, Love spent 57 weeks at the top of the New York Times Best Seller List in 2007. Her newest book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, encourages us to overcome the mental and emotional paralysis that keeps us from trying new things or enjoying a full life. Learn how to find something you really love and do it; face your biggest fears and deal with them. If you are a writer or artist looking for inspiration, this is a good place to start. And, if perfectionism is part of what is holding you back from creativity or fully enjoying life, Dr. Brené Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are will help you to see that it may be your very desire to make things perfect that keeps you from being the person you are instead of the person you feel you should be. Her newest book, Rising Strong, reminds us we all have struggles and that no matter how brave we are for how long, we all eventually fall. It’s how we recover from that fall that makes the difference and Dr. Brown has good advice for pulling ourselves back up and using our experiences to gain new strength. As Dr. Brown says in her Manifesto of the Brave and Brokenhearted, “We are the authors of our lives. We write our own daring endings.’ Happy Reading!

GFWC Club Presented with Beautiful Gavel Stand

At the summer Organizational Board Meeting when President Rosie Clifton went to call the meeting to order, she was in a dilemma as to where to knock with the gavel. That’s when Sharon Nathan, Club Parliamentarian, came to the rescue. Her husband who has done lots of woodworking for her agreed to make a special stand for the gavel. Thanks Don.

What a Great Idea: Sleeping Mats for the Homeless

By Uta Kuhn Member Anne Rankin of the GFWC Woman’s Club of SCC has taken on a project of making sleeping mats for the homeless. She read about this ingenious idea somewhere and started making these mats. It is an easy project. It entails crocheting plastic bags together to make the mat. So Anne decided not to throw any of her bags away. She is shown in a photo with a finished mat. If you would like to help with this project, you can find easy to understand video clips of the entire process from grocery bag to finished product. Thanks Anne for that great information.

MEET YOUR

NEIGHBOR

Story by Agnes Baker, Photo by Bonnie Mullen Say “Hello” to Ray and Gloria Hosek! Fairly new (since December, 2014) to Sun City Center, these two have already made their presence known as they get involved with their new community. Ray graduated from Loyola University with a business degree. He then served in the US Army during the Vietnam era. When his time with the Amy ended, he worked in the human resources field, ending his career when he retired from Fairchild Aerospace as their Director of Human Resources. Ray and Gloria met while both were employed at the University of Illinois. They were married in Chicago and it became their home until Ray was transferred to Los Angeles where they lived for 34 years, experiencing a major fire and earthquake, and raising three children. Gloria received her art degree and teaching credentials at Cal State University at Northridge, CA. While the children were still at home, she taught art at Notre Dame High School in Los Angeles. She is also known professionally for her artistic ability for she has sold some of her paintings, plus she paints murals, etc. Their “first” retirement was to The Lake of the Ozarks, a favorite spot. However, after 15 years, they felt it was time to move to a warmer place and our community was chosen for the “second” retirement. Ray indulges his passion for golfing and fishing while also being a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks and the American

Legion. Gloria - even though out of the classroom - shares her skills with folks at Freedom Plaza, and makes herself available to anyone wanting instruction in the various art forms. This is an art teacher without a classroom, willing to teach to any group! She also enjoys the Lapidary Club and is learning Tai Chi. Gloria and Ray also share a love for gardening and have a plot with the Tillers and Toilers; and are members of the gardening group known as the “greenhouse gang”. Another love and one they have indulged in previously is travel. So far, they have been to a number of countries, including China, Peru, Greece and Egypt. On the agenda is a trip to Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam along with visits to their three children and eight grandchildren all living in Colorado, Illinois and Texas. A very busy twosome and a great asset to our community. Thank you, Ray and Gloria, for choosing SCC as your “second” retirement home.

Holiday Gift Fund Drive Underway

By Phyllis Hodges It’s time again, folks—time to thank those Community Association maintenance and office people who have been so helpful in 2015 with the myriad of 2015 events and who handle any number of administrative issues that crop up during the year. “This is a gift from you, the CA members; the CA has no involvement,” said Committee Chairman Margaret Vaske. Margaret and her committee were delighted with last year’s record donations. $13,428 was donated by 100 clubs, 18 homeowner associations and six individuals; it was distributed to 29 members of the maintenance crew and eight CA office employees.

“Our goal is to hold last year’s level or even expand it,” Margaret said. They, of course, welcome any amount, but are suggesting the following guidelines for clubs: $20 - $100 for clubs with fewer than 75 members; $100 - $500 for the larger clubs. Cash or checks (payable to “Holiday Gift Fund”) can be dropped off at the CA office before December 18 for forwarding to the committee. The Holiday Gift Fund dates back to 1998 when the idea was floated when some residents wanted to say “thank you” but the CA did not allow tipping employees. Ron Pelton is credited with initiating the fund. For more information, contact Margaret Vaske at 633-6756 or “vaskepm@yahoo.com”.

Freedom Plaza Veterans Day Festival & Hometown Honor Flight

Ann Marie Leblanc—Still in Our Hearts By Phyllis Hodges The Ann Marie Leblanc Room is new to the Community Association Central Campus. It adds additional space for small meetings (16 people at four tables). The Community Association leadership is to be commended for naming the meeting room after Ann Marie. It is an apt way of saying, “We haven’t forgotten you.”

Ann Marie is a legend in Sun City Center and sadly missed by those who worked alongside her on various projects and volunteer activities. She was a SCC director for six years (2007 – 2012) and led some major projects such as the community’s year of events celebrating our 50th Anniversary, FunFest, Holiday Walk & Breakfast, Golf Cart Parade and July 4 Fireworks. Many of them she initiated. The room is in a space formerly occupied by Lifeline in the building on Cherry Hills Drive (just east of Old Towne Hall). Lifeline and DAV are now housed in the part of the building that previously was home to the CA Information Center. Claudia Hinson, scheduler in the CA office, says the meeting room is a welcome addition since it will free up the larger rooms when only a few people are attending. Photos by Phyllis Hodges

Last year’s Hometown Honor Flight was well appreciated and well attended. Organizers expect another banner event this year.

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” ~ Pres. Harry S. Truman. Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11. The Retired Officers’ Corporation and Freedom Plaza invite you to join us in thanking our wonderful Veterans. We will be hosting our Second Annual Hometown Honor Flight with Flight to Honor of Polk County. A Hometown Honor Flight provides the opportunity for Veterans who are physically unable to attend an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. a “virtual” Flight of Honor. We will kick off the public festivities at 9 a.m. by cheering on our Hometown Honor Flight Honorees at a short by meaningful parade on American Eagle Boulevard. Bring your business/ organizational thank you banners and signs to show our Veterans your gratitude! Following the parade honorees will be awarded and recognized at a special ceremony featuring the Harmony Belles and Gary Vidito. Also in attendance will be the 1 st Infantry Division Reenactment Group

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The First Infantry Reenactment Group is a non-profit group of amateur World War II historians and enthusiasts. They will portray the lifestyle, equipment, uniforms, and combat tactics of a United States Army soldier during the World War II years. Their display may include WW2 era tents, tent fly’s, equipment crates and supplies of an Infantry unit, the individual soldiers’ gear, and of course WW2 soldiers in period uniforms. Soldiers at the event will interact with the public at the displays. We are hoping to include a weapons demonstrations and a small battle may be waged by Allied and Axis reenactors! Our goal is to bring the entire Sun City Center Community together for this patriotic event. We encourage local businesses and military organizations to reserve a display table. What a great opportunity to thank our Veterans and bring recognition and awareness (and maybe a few new members) to your organization. For more information or to reserve your table, contact the Retired Officers’ Corporation at (813) 633-4467 or email Corena Fristad at cfristad@brookdale.com.

Bob Black

G’day! I’m Bob (Robert G.) Black and live on Wolf Laurel Drive in SCC. Two kids and four ever-so-bright grandchildren. I was elected to the Sun City Center Community Association Board of Directors twice from 2008 to 2012. In 2011 and 2012 I was Ed Barnes’ vice president. On the CA Board, I worked on the SCC Directory, the Hardship Committee, Consumer Affairs Committee and others. I chaired the SCC Public Relations Task Force. I was born and raised in New York City, have lived in Rowayton, CT, Norwalk, CT, Wilton, CT and Lakeland, FL. I came to SCC in 2002 because I saw it as a golf mecca and because I wanted to be around people my own age after several years in teaching college (journalism and public relations) in Lakeland, FL. What was your profession before retirement? I’m a former newspaperman and have owned a public relations firm since 1974. I’ve also been an adjunct professor of journalism and public relations. My firm has had over a hundred clients, many of them for ten or more years. A number were nonprofit organizations. Do you participate in any club, community service or volunteer organizations? I’ve been a driver on the Security Patrol for over ten years. Have been president of two golf associations. On The NEWS of Sun City Center, I was News Editor, columnist and finally deputy editor. I’m a director and public relations chair of the South (Hillsborough) County Coalition on Mental Health and Aging and chaired the Sun City Center Senior Care Corporation. Also was a golf and travel columnist for the SCC Observer and the SCC Sun (now part of the Tampa Trib.) Why do you want to serve on the Board? I want to serve on the Board again because while the current Board has finished projects that were planned years ago, it has not, until October of this year, come forth with even the barest hint of future planning. I believe that the CA Board should be paying far more attention to our amenities and real and potential activities in order to attract people to Sun City Center and add value to our homes. What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? Improved communication between the CA Board and the community and between the Board and the outside world. Work with the CA’s clubs to redefine their needs. We need to work with the county and State DOT on traffic planning. Work with ClubLink to use part of the North Lakes Golf Course for our members. Develop plans for future construction on the land donated by ClubLink to the CA off Cherry Hills.

Michael Killian (Incumbent)

In June of 2009, with my wife Cathy and our two greyhounds, Nigel and Tess, I moved from Michigan to Sun City Center. All four of us had retired and wanted to spend time with my 98 year old mother who had moved to Sun City Center with my father in 1970. Three years ago in 2012, I was elected to serve on the Board. At that time, as now, I feel I have something to offer our community. I am pleased with many of the changes that have transpired in SCC since then but there are still more goals I have set for myself that have yet to come to fruition. What is it about you, your skillset of personality that would make you a good Director? After 35 years of employment as a Manufacturing Engineer for Detroit Diesel Corporation where I retired I was given many opportunities to work with people from all walks of life, from CEO’s to men who got up every day and went to work sweeping floors in the factory. I learned two very important lessons to live by: 1. Everybody is equal. 2. Don’t lie to people. Do you participate in any club, community service or volunteer organizations? Since moving to SCC I have worked on the Security Patrol, been an officer in my HOA, joined the Billiard Club and joined the Stained Glass Club where I have served as their Internal Vice President for the past three years. While living up north, working and raising a family I did not have time to fulfill some of my interests. Now is that time. Why do you want to serve on the Board? Being the Board Club Liaison Director has been an education in our clubs here in SCC and I have learned how our clubs, their officers and members work together to make this the best place to live and play together. With over 150 clubs there is always something to do in SCC! What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? There are many responsibilities that fall on the Community Association Board. Our community is fortunate to have a group of people who are willing to carry out those responsibilities on their behalf. The important thing is that the people serving on the board are mindful of what the people want… and act accordingly. I consider myself proven to be one of those people.

The News of Sun City Center

John Luper

My name is John Luper. My family moved to Clearwater, FL in 1958 and most of schooling and career has been in the Tampa Bay area. My wife Linda and I have been married nearly 45 years and we have two wonderful daughters and 6 great grandkids. I play golf regularly and we have been traveling extensively since retirement four years ago. Linda and I moved to SCC early in 2002 when I accepted a job with WCI Communities, the previous home developer. Prior to that I was Director of Golf Operations at Grenelefe Resort located in central Florida. What was your profession before retirement? My entire career was involvement in golf courses. Initially I was a Certified GC Superintendent and prepared courses for PGA-LPGA events. New opportunities also included Property Management and ultimately I entered upper management positions. With WCI, I was Regional General Mgr. of Amenities based in SCC. That position also included responsibilities of 5 other community clubs and golf courses. In SCC, I also was President of the Kings Point Master Association and all clubhouses and facilities in KP until the developer sold them to the residents. Do you participate in any club, community service or volunteer organizations? I am a past president of the SCC Chamber of Commerce, current vice president of the Greater SCC Beautification Corporation, current member of the SCC Men’s Club, member of the CA Pebble Beach Florida Friendly committee, and have served on a previous Pebble Beach task force and previous Long Range Planning Committee. I also represented the developer on the SCC Forum. Why do you want to serve on the Board? With development soon to be finished, the future success of the community is how well we maintain our facilities at an affordable price and market this wonderful community to future retirees. We must continue to maintain all facilities in first class condition, monitor the overall satisfaction of residents, and plan for affordable future changes that the next generation of homebuyers will look for. I believe my experience in SCC has prepared me to be of help. What is it about you, your skillset of personality that would make you a good Director? I believe I am a good listener. I have learned what did or didn’t work in the past doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the same in the future. What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? I would like SCC residents feeling that their community enhances their life, their property value, and living here was the best decision they ever made.

Lynn K. Mooney

Lynn Mooney. Husband-Richard (Dick). Born and raised in Mansfield OH, relocated to Atlanta GA; Washington, DC; Chicago, IL, and lastly Sun City Center (24 year resident). We moved to Sun City Center in June, 1991, to be closer to both sets of parents who were aging residents. The most important reason was the variety of the offerings in the community amenities; the recreation and health and fitness, the security that was offered, the emergency and medical services as well as the ability to socialize with our own age group. What was your profession before retirement? Started my career in real estate in 1984 in Tampa and started SouthShore Homes & Properties in 2003 as its Broker-Owner. There is nothing more rewarding than helping clients realize their dream of retiring to Florida. Do you participate in any club, community service or volunteer organizations? I attend the Community Association meetings to be up-to-date on any proposed activities and discussions being addressed in the community. Over the years, I have served on numerous Boards of Directors. Why do you want to serve on the Board? It is time for me to give back to the Sun City Center community by volunteering and sharing my non-profit organization experience. The decisions of the Board of Directors will affect our property values and quality of life. Having more than 30 years of experience in property sales, both residential and commercial, and my experience with “baby boomers” (the target audience for prospective SCC homebuyers) and my firsthand knowledge of Florida real estate legislation, I want to help to focus the Board’s decisions so that both current residents and prospective homebuyers will derive maximum benefit of the blended lifestyle. How should the Board of Directors determine the community priorities relative to its various responsibilities? It is important, as a Director, to review all issues for all residents and leave any personal opinions outside the boardroom. We need to be aware of our property rights to protect the values of our investment in Sun City Center and be aware of the changes going on around us as well as the challenges that they bring. What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? Develop a strong 3-year strategic plan to benefit all community members and businesses. It is important to have a retail and restaurant mix available; Develop a consumer-friendly website so that we are competitive with other retirement communities and promote the best that we have to offer. Review the existing rules that govern the community for continued relevance as well as providing equality of services for all.

My son lives in Brooklyn, NY and my daughter lives in Orlando, FL. My particular interests are finance and investment. I have lived in Sun City Center for 13 years. We moved from Bellmore, NY. In addition to that you could use a golf cart for transportation within the confines of Sun City Center. What was your profession before retirement? I am a CPA, licensed in the state of NY and was a Chief Financial Officer for over 25 years before my retirement. Do you participate in any club, community service or volunteer organizations? I want to make sure that our residents are fairly served since I have no preconceived agendas. How should the Board of Directors determine the community priorities relative to its various responsibilities? Directors have to be aware of the resident’s needs and concerns for the future. A director must be knowledgeable of the current Statutes of the state of Florida. What is it about you, your skillset of personality that would make you a good Director? I listen, analyze and make an informed decision and my financial experience is an added plus. What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? Why do you want to serve on the Board? To ensure that the wishes of the majority are heard and acted upon; and that all matters are dealt with openly, fairly, and in accordance with our rules and by-laws. How should the Board of Directors determine the community priorities relative to its various responsibilities? The board should separate the priorities into three categories, first, those things that must be done due to legal dictates or for health and safety reasons; second, those things that do not require an inordinate amount of capital outlay or infrastructure change that the majority of the people desire, and thirdly, those “wish-list” items that the people want if unobligated funding is available in sufficient amount. What would you like to see the Board accomplish during your tenure? I would like the board to continue the program of updating and improving the SCC infrastructure, add more avenues of entertainment and campus life enrichment; and take whatever action is available to eradicate some of the unsightly conditions of some of the properties in SCC.
