The Cart Parade is Comin’ to Town

By Phyllis Hodges The annual Sun City Center Christmas Golf Cart Parade is only one week away! December 8 promises to be a fun addition to Sun City Center’s holiday season. The parade begins at 10 AM and will be followed by a Winter Festival sponsored by Minto Communities beginning at 11 AM. The Festival will run until 2:30 PM. The SCC Community Association Central Campus will be brimming with entertainment, a car show and vendors offering food and other wares. The parade starts at the Central Campus parking lot on N. Pebble Beach Blvd. and continues right on La Jolla, right on El Rancho, right on Ojai, and left on Cherry

H i l l s back to the Campus Bandstand. Residents along those streets should plan accordingly if they need to leave their homes during the parade hours. The committee has been hard at work encouraging entries, inviting government officials and soliciting sponsors to cover expenses. Dave Birkett, committee chair, said, “The overall goal is to make this an enjoyable community event. We have no doubt that will be the case. At press time, entries had well exceeded the 42 carts

which participated last year.” Each year the parade entries have reflected the fun, creativity and variety represented in our community. From towering snow globes to houses on wheels, tropical Santas and pink mobiles, the SCC Christmas Cart Parade has always been a great way to kick of the holiday season and get into the Christmas spirit. And we expect this year to be better than ever! Of course, the $5,000 golf cart prize money donated by Minto is adding to the excitement! You read that right - $5,000 in prize money! But the committee has been emphasizing that carts do not have to be elaborately decorated to join in the fun. A cart can be adorned with a lot or a little of something that reflects either the holiday or some aspect of life in Florida. The theme of the parade—‘Tis the Sea-Sun—offers a wide spectrum of opportunities. Entries will be accepted anytime, including the day of the parade.

The Golf Cart Parade Committee is stressing that community participation is the goal. Entries can be decorated minimally, as is this one.

Registrations can be picked up at the Community Association office, Kings Point clubhouses, or Freedom Plaza marketing office. Information contacts: Dave Birkett (dmbirkett@yahoo.com) or the Kings Point representative, Chris Robinson (crobin1940@ yahoo.com) NOKP Staff contributed to this report. CIA Blackbird mission results revealed The Silver Osprey Squadron members and guests had a real treat for their monthly luncheon meeting on November 9 at the Plaza Club, Sun City Center. Aeronautical engineer William J. Fox told them about the design and development of the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, and Don Vining, MD explained his part in enabling the pilots to cope with the extreme altitudes and speeds. Bill’s talk can be summarized as “An inside story on the high speed, high altitude spy plane successor to the U-2 and its covert flights over North Viet Nam and North Korea in the late 1960s.” The first flight of the A-12 Blackbird was in April 1962. Two years later, equipped with Pratt & Whitney J-58s, rated at 32,000 lbs of thrust each, the A-12 cruised at Mach 3.2 and 83,000 ft. Bill Fox first got involved with the A-12 as a young engineer for Honeywell, and helped design its flight simulator. This was crucial for training the six CIA pilots to fly 29

very successful combat missions over North Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and North Korea. In response to the USS Pueblo crisis in January 1968, pilot Frank Murray quickly found the Pueblo in Wonson harbor only one day after the North Koreans boarded it. He was able to photograph the whole of North Korea from the DMZ to the Yalu River in less than eighteen minutes without

being detected. He brought back photos showing some of the American captives on deck. This was the proof the US needed, showing our ship and our men were being held. Negotiations began immediately. The CIA connection with the A-12 Blackbird ended in 1968. The US Air Force continued with the two-seat SR-71 until 1989, and NASA flew three of them until 1996.

Don Vining MD, was a US Air Force Flight Surgeon based at Groom Lake (Area 51) at the same time Bill Fox was there (1965-1967). Don made sure the CIA pilots were healthy enough to fly. For part of his training, he spent time at the David Clark Company of Worcester, MA, to learn how to wear and use the pressure suit. The Editor’s Corner Holiday Traditions At Home & Across the Pond By Adam Porter EIC, NOKP December is here once again. In our home, that particular flip of the calendar page triggers the beginning of several annual family traditions. And this year we are adding a few more. The Tree

We found our tree.

Some folks put this up the day after Thanksgiving. Others wait until Christmas Eve. We split the difference and put ours up sometime in the middle of the month. We do our best to make a big production out of this, a family outing somewhere between the Griswold’s trudge through knee-deep snow and snapping together a plastic one. For years we went over to Lloyds Christmas Tree Farm in Seffner. But, these days, Lloyds is no more than a Ghost of Christmas Past. We still get a live tree, but now the trips are quicker and most of the fun involves sipping cocoa as we untangle light strings and hang our favorite ornaments one by one while Bing, Ol’ Blue Eyes and the Rat Pack croon the old standards, warning us to button up our overcoats because It’s Cold Outside. The Decorations Ours are simple, and they don’t include lights on the house or nodding metal reindeer (though I did sell those one year in high school). We have a box or three of collected and handmade decorations we have gathered through the years. These are hung up, set out or set up throughout the house. Wreaths and mangers scenes. Paper chains and felt dioramas. Candles and an army of critters and a bevvy of snowmen, all decked out in their holiday best. Christmas Movie Night This is one we have been doing as long as I can

Ralphie from A Christmas Story

remember. Friday night Movie Night becomes Friday Night Christmas movie night. We

generally watch two each Friday and a couple more on Christmas Eve. Favorites include White Christmas, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation and The Polar Express. Of course, we always watch a few of those classic stop motion animation films like Rudolph and other animated favorites like Charlie Brown Christmas, Garfield and The Grinch. Christmas Music Our family’s Christmas playlist is all over the map. It almost always begins and ends with Bing Crosby and the Rat Pack – Dean and Sammy and The Chairman crooning holiday favorites. We also have a few C&W albums, mixes of old standards and poppy holiday songs. Then there are the soundtracks from Christmas movies like Charlie Brown, White Christmas and Home Alone. This last one is a terrific mix of tunes by the likes of Mel Torme’, The Drifters and scores by John Williams. Speaking of scores, there are many nights during the holiday season that we doze off on the couch, empty cider or cocoa mugs on the coffee table and instrumental magic setting the mood. John Williams, The London Philharmonic, Phil Keaggy, the Avalon Pops and a host of Celtic styles. And, of course, every year we hear the Royal Guardsmen singing about a certain beagleshaped WW1 Flying Ace at least a few times. Advent Calendar Growing up, I always had one of these. I remember opening those little doors each day in December well into my teen years. But, at some point, we stopped being excited and Mom quit buying them. This year, with 2 little guys in the house, I decided to bring back the old tradition. We thought about getting one of those perpetual calendars you bring out every year, but decided to start small, ordering a 3D paper version online from Vermont Christmas Company. I ended up ordering two, one more traditional and a second “whimsical” version. Because both ethnic and religious traditions are important in our family, we are equal opportunity with our Christmas traditions. Military Traditions And, finally, this year will be the first year my eldest son celebrates that time-honored military tradition, “First Time Overseas For the Holidays.” Fortunately, for all of us, Chris is not in a war zone. He is living in the relatively safe confines of his quarters the USAF shares

December, 2012

with the RAF in Lakenheath, England. The Florida boy will likely have his chance to celebrate his very first white Christmas, albeit far from home. But, given new technology such as Skype, much closer now than it once was. Still, it will be tough to hang up his stocking knowing he will not be around to dig inside, eyes flashing excitement in the same way that he did when he was a preschooler. I suppose, at Christmas, all of us are kids again. Maybe those traditions are time machines, or maybe they just come with a little magic that makes time stand still. EDITOR’S NOTE: Share your traditions with us! I have posted this article on our Christmas Eve. website, www.NewsOfKingsPoint. those responses along with our com. ft. pressure chamber testing as the pilots. He also wore the suit for several flights in a two seat Blackbird. In a timely aside, Dr. Vining pointed out that the David Clark Company made the suit that Felix Baumgartner used in his recent Space Dive Record. (Highest jump 128,100 ft, and max vertical velocity of Mach 1.24: 834 mph.) The suit can be very claustrophobic and it takes many hours of practice to overcome the urge to unzip it! Dr. Vining explained that any unprotected exposure above the “Armstrong’s line” of 63,000 feet, causes body fluids to boil. Bill Fox’s background gave him an instant rapport with his primarily Navy audience. After graduation from high school in 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and after a year of special training, was given orders to Korea aboard the carrier USS Oriskany. After his honorable discharge in 1954, Bill got his engineering training at Iowa State University, and later at the University of Minnesota. Bill is very proud of his years with Honeywell and later the Lockheed “Skunk Works”. He retired from Lockheed in 1988 and moved back to his native Iowa. He is very pleased to have been so closely associated with the Blackbird, still considered by many to be the fastest aircraft ever built, and the greatest

Spotlight with a Wise

Eating “Out” at the Clubhouses

By Brenda Wiseman Visitors. We all have them, and why not? We live in Florida where the sun is shining, the breezes are blowing and we are wearing shorts. It is always fun and exciting to have friends and family with us, but if you are like I am, sometimes there is too much cooking and not enough yakking. Sometimes, I don’t want to cook, but I don’t want to drive all over the place either, getting caught in the traffic and then waiting for a table at a crowded restaurant. Did you know you can take your guests out and eat all three meals at different locations without ever leaving Kings Point? Depending on where you live behind the gates, you can even walk there and back to help keep those calories in check. The cafe at Falcon Watch Clubhouse (642-0177) on Kings Blvd. is open Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Early risers can get some breakfast and enjoy the friendly folks who serve and cook up your favorites. With Terri’s big smile welcoming all residents of Kings Point and their guests to the cafe, you just know

Eating out at the Clubhouse.

you will have a relaxed time. The cafe is open to all residents of Kings Point and their guests. You don’t have to be a member of the club or even golf. The women of the Lyndhurst Association all get together regularly at Falcon Watch and have lunch together. Enjoying sandwiches with lots of laughter, I was invited by Audrey Ercegovich to join them at lunch and felt so good afterwards--full of good food and warm feelings. When hunger pangs hit again, after a swim in the pool or a rousing game of billiards, lunch can be had at Le Perk Cafe in the North Clubhouse. I am partial to Vivian’s egg salad on whole wheat. She just seems to have the perfect touch. The

chili is pretty darn good, too-especially when there is a Florida nip in the air. You know, when the cold front comes through--and it goes down to 60 degrees. The Le Perk Cafe (387-3450) is open Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Muffins for breakfast--ice cream for a snack--I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! Lots of folks congregate in the Cafe and meet up for breakfast or lunch. You will hear lots of happy sounds from the residents enjoying life. And then there is dinner at the Palm Court Cafe (387-3482) open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. If you’d like a beer with your pizza, this is the place to go. It is a great place to kick back and feel as if every day is

a vacation day. DJ’s and music and dancing and watching the alligators. Cookouts around the pool are a busy time. Every time I go to this Cafe in the South Clubhouse, I am reminded of vacationing in Jamaica. Although in Jamaica the golf carts are missing. Traveling by golf cart is just too much fun. So go ahead and enjoy those visitors, but don’t wear yourself out cooking or fighting traffic. Eat in Kings Point. There are plenty of options. Excuse me while I go out and grab a bite!

She loves people and is good with other dogs. She can often be found goofing off in the doggy pool after romping in the play yard with her furry pals. Come and meet this absolutely adorable girl. She will win you over in a heartbeat! Phoebe is spayed, microchipped, and current on her shots. DOB: Feb 02, ‘2012

Cricket is a real charmer and never stops playing except to greet any volunteer who picks him up. He also has seemingly unlimited kitten energy and is a ball of fun, always chasing the balls around the kitten room. Cricket has been brought up to date on his shots, neutered, and micro chipped as part of his adoption. DOB: 3/22/2012

Holiday Tree of Lights

For the past 8 years, C.A.R.E., the no-kill animal shelter in Ruskin has sponsored a Holiday Tree of Lights for the Animals Campaign, with all donations benefitting the homeless pets at the shelter. Each year, toward the end of November, a tree is put up in the lobby of the shelter and is decorated with bulbs and personalized ornaments to honor the past or present pets of donors. The tree stays lit throughout the holiday season. Participation in our Tree of Lights celebration also makes a wonderful gift to the animal lovers in your life and all donations will be used to feed the shelter pets and medically treat those in need until they can find a new home with a human companion. To have a bulb or personalized ornament place on our holiday tree, or to make a general donation, please visit the shelter at 1528 27th St SE in Ruskin, visit our website at careshelter. org, or call Don at 813.633.2903 for assistance. Thank you for your support of our homeless pets and have a wonderful holiday season.

Ecuador in Your Pocket

Story Eddie Dixon, excerpts and photos by Alan Jarrett Normally I don’t write this column about second-hand trips. I prefer to write my own version of events and destinations from my own perspective, slightly off center and tongue-in-cheek though it may be. But in the interest of both friendship and a darn good read, I’m going to make an exception. I just finished reading an advance copy of my friend, Alan Jarrett’s, new travel book, Ecuador in Your Pocket: Cities & Culture, and it really got me excited. By the time I was halfway through the first chapter I had already penciled in another overseas destination on my bucket list…one I had hardly even considered up until now. By the time I finished the book – it is about 130 pages and includes some great “insider” information and stunning visuals – I has at least four more mustsee spots on my travel itinerary and several more, “hope to get theres.” And it’s that feeling of discovery that, I think, is the strength of this book. It’s about a place most of us would love to visit, but would likely never think to go there – Ecuador. This South American country is, for the most part, largely off the well-traveled grid when folks head south across the Equator. Most of us head for Brazil or Argentina or the Galapagos (which are the one well trodden part of Ecuador, but not featured in the book). But this is about parts of Ecuador that are not necessarily on the “group tour bandwagon.”

Yes, there are stops in two big cities and another larger town, but most of the book reveals relatively undiscovered places – cities, towns and villages that are friendly to tourists but not yet traveled enough to be tourist traps. Do you like tall mountain landscapes and valley villages? Yep, got ‘em. What about quaint, culturally rich towns with farmer’s markets and handmade craftwork. Yep, got that too. Exotic jungle hideaways and sundrenched beach towns? Ditto. That’s Ecuador. But don’t take my word for it. Check out this excerpt from chapter 1 of the book: “…Places like this are not supposed to exist outside the imaginations of the most gifted storytellers. Yet here it is. Vibrant color and wild places. Thriving

Alan and Barbara in Mindo.

commerce and emerging industry. Stark, imposing mountain ranges and warm, inviting smiles. A place where towering peaks hide misty mountain villages. Where steamy jungles are bisected by falling waters and molten volcanoes heat cleansing pools. Where rainbowhued animals straight out of a storybook are commonplace and the coastline births the sort of consistent, glassy surf that becomes secret legend. This is Ecuador. The savvy traveler’s South American dream. Exotic, breathtaking and wild. But also cosmopolitan, cultured and refined. This is a quiet country, largely undiscovered outside of the bigger cities. But

tourists, adventure seekers and, even expats are enthusiastically welcomed…” This is not your average “expanded brochure” travel guide. This is written from first-hand experience, a local’s perspective of the best and the brightest Ecuador’s landscape and lifestyle has to offer. See, Alan met and married an Ecuadorian gal while they were both in college here in the States. Then they moved to her home country, where they lived for over a decade. So, in these pages, you get Ecuador from the inside out. If that sounds good to you, you can learn more about the book and buy a digital copy at the publisher’s website, www. AtlasMediaInk.com.

Campaign Against Human Trafficking Holds Event

On Saturday, November 3, 2012, the Tampa Bay “Community Campaign Against Human Trafficking” hosted a White Ribbon Against Pornography event to educate the community about the dangers of pornography and its connection to the human trafficking business. The event was held at the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center and featured speakers from organizations ranging from the non-profit Morality in the Media to the Tampa Bay Area FBI. The presenters spoke about the growing problem of human trafficking and the role that pornography plays in fueling the pandemic of child sex trafficking. Tampa is identified as 5th on the list of U.S. cities with the highest concentration of child sex trafficking. The seminars promoted awareness, advocacy, and action, as the community responsibility to respond. The speakers also discussed what could be done to protect our community and teen runaway population from being impacted by this crime. The entire program was also offered in Spanish. “We are very encouraged

by the success of this event,” says June Wallace, Facilitator for the Tampa Bay Community Campaign Against Human Trafficking. “We were able to educate attendees on the negative effects of pornography and the growing human trafficking epidemic in our community.”

B U L L E T I N Italian Cultural Club News

AMICI, the Italian Cultural Club, hosted an evening of song at its November meeting. Pat Raimondo, accompanied by Charles Wirick on the piano, held an enthralled audience in the palm of his hands. The program began with songs from the Vic Damone and Mario Lanza eras, bringing back memories of a simpler time. The middle part of the program featured songs from the American Civil War era. Familiar songs from Gone with the Wind, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and a moving recitation by Mr. Raimondo of the Gettysburg Address reminded the audience of the powers we enjoy as Americans. Bringing the program to a close was a medley of familiar Italian songs. Sprinkled throughout the program were solos by Mr. Wirick. His rendition of songs from the Godfather movies was played with great feeling and skill. Wine and cheese was served after the program. The AMICI Club appreciates the many talented Sun City area residents who are willing to share their love of music and other talents. The next meeting, Wednesday, December 12 at 7pm in the Kings Point Clubhouse, will feature John Frizzola, who will speak about “Italian Meteorologists and the Age of Science.” Membership in AMICI is $10 a year. The membership drive closes December 30. For information call 634-0955.

Student Leaders: Johnny Carranco, Anthony Rice, Sergio Barrios and Flor Ventura-Castro

At Reddick Elementary School, the students participated in many school-wide activities across all grade levels to help the students understand the election process and the importance of having a vote. Students were encouraged to research the two major candidates, Obama and Romney, to learn about their different views on the major issues in this year’s election. And after much discussion and research, students were able to make an informed decision about which candidate he/she believed would be the best choice. On Friday, November 2nd, all students received an ID card and entered their ‘Precinct’, which was playing Patriotic music and decorated in red, white and blue. The 5th Grade Student Leaders checked ID’s for each student, had them sign their names and then proceeded to show them where to vote. As students exited the room, they received an “I Voted” sticker. This was truly a great way to give them a hands-on approach to democracy and letting them all know that their voice was heard.

UMC Hosts Movie: “The Christmas Shoes”

The United Methodist Church 1210 Del Webb Blvd. W. will be hosting another great movie December 14, 2012. In keeping with the Christmas Spirit, we will be showing “THE CHRISTMAS SHOES”, inspired by the #1 hit song and best-selling book “THE CHRISTMAS SHOES”. The showing will be Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 in Creason Hall 6:30 P.M. The doors will open at 6:00 with a warm welcome by members of the “Good New Sunday School Class”. If a friendly greeting isn’t enough to entice you to the movies, the stimulating aromas of coffee and popcorn whiffing through the doors are bound to bring you in. The extra time before the movie starts, 6:30, will give you an opportunity to catch up on the latest happenings around Sun City Center and your neighborhood. Bring your friends and your appetites, as in addition to popcorn and coffee, home baked cookies and other beverages will also be served. “THE CHRISTMAS SHOES” is about a 10-year-old boy, Nathan Andrews, who after finding out this will be his mother’s (Kimberly Williams starred in “Father of the Bride”) last Christmas. Wanting this Christmas to be especially special for her, Nathan sets out to find that special gift when he meets an overworked attorney, Robert Layton, (Rob Lowe, “The West Wing”), who has forgotten to take time for his family. The boy’s love for his mother inspires Robert to wake up and reconnect with what is truly important in his life. Will Nathan find that special gift? What do you suppose it will be? You will have to come and see for yourself.

December Poem Submission Orchestra Offers Holiday Concert From Chanukah to Handel to Hollywood

A Great Adventure Tomorrow.... I will set out unaware of what lies ahead All things familiar hidden from view Hazy orbs of green and red lights in rhythmic control By day’s end the fog will lift baring what’s-yet-to-come. Today... I set out unaware of what lies ahead The view of all things familiar less obscure Rays of sunshine illumine my here-and-now The day’s beginning - red-hot with promise. Yesterday... I set out aware of what lay ahead The familiarity of all things in plain view Moon beams danced on the lake of my what-used-to-be-s Through days gone-by I’ve earned a cool, quiet wisdom. Suzanne S. Ask Pete your questions about

prostate cancer I am confused. There are so many different treatments for prostate cancer. Which is best? A—It is easy to be confused when you’ve been told you have prostate cancer. A sense of panic may set in. You want to do the right thing, but what is the right thing? The best advice is to take a deep breath and step back. Don’t make a knee-jerk decision. Don’t let your doctor pressure you. Regardless of your cancer’s stage you have time to research, get a second opinion and talk to other men.

Attend a support group, ask questions, educate yourself. Become your own advocate. There is no one treatment that is the best for all men—but you can find the one that is the best for you. It may not be the one your doctor is suggesting. Having choices is a good thing - look at them all. Sometimes no treatment is a legitimate choice. But please don’t ignore it once you have been diagnosed.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker FAMOUS HAND

OHIO-STYLE

Brilliancies are not always rewarded. For example, take this deal from the match between Taiwan and the United States at the 1979 world team championship. The U.S. North-South pair at the first table got to four spades doubled as shown, and West, Che-Hung Kuo, made the remarkable opening lead of the nine of hearts! After East, Patrick Huang, won the trick with the queen, he recognized that the purpose of his partner’s underlead of the ace of hearts was to get a ruff. Huang also recognized that West’s lead of

an unnecessarily high heart was a suit-preference signal, asking for the return of the higherranking of the two remaining side suits. Accordingly, Huang returned the deuce of diamonds, transmitting a suit-preference signal of his own. West ruffed the diamond and, obeying East’s signal, returned the seven of clubs! West’s second underlead of an ace was likewise successful. East won with the queen and led another diamond, and West ruffed to put the contract down one. But alas, this brilliant defense by the Taiwanese East-West pair was more than offset by what occurred at the second table, where the U.S. West wound up playing at five hearts doubled. Ordinarily, he would have gone down one, losing the first three spade tricks. But luckily for declarer, North’s singleton spade was the ace, which he led, and that was the only trick scored by the defenders. So the outcome was that the American East-West pair at the second table made five hearts doubled with an overtrick for a score of 1,050 points. This was 950 points more than the Taiwanese pair at the first table had scored with their extraordinary defense, providing ample proof that brilliancies are not always adequately rewarded. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By Samantha Weaver

• It was revered civil-rights leader Mohandas Gandhi who made the following sage observation: “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.” •If you’re afraid of rats and mice, you might not want to read the following tidbit: Those who study such things say that 60 percent of all the mammals on earth are rodents. •Athletes playing baseball on steroids have frequently been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mistaken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a nohitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California. •It’s been reported that Albert Einstein did not like to wear socks. •George W. Church, the founder of Church’s Fried Chicken, didn’t actually enter the restaurant business until after he retired. In his first career, Church ran a chicken hatchery and sold incubators. •Historians say that Russia’s Peter the Great was nearly 7 feet tall. ********************************* Thought for the Day: “Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Salome’s Stars

WEEK OF DEC. 3, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve let yourself be distracted from what’s really important. But love finally gets your attention this week. However, it comes with a challenge that could create a problem. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to bully others into following your lead. Best advice: Persuade, don’t push, and you’ll get the cooperation you need to move forward with your plans. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist the urge to gloat now that you’ve proved your detractors wrong. Instead, charm them back into your circle. Remember: A former foe can become your best ally. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might want to claim all the credit for making this holiday season special. But is it worth producing a lot of hurt feelings by rejecting offers of help? Think about it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Ignore a co-worker’s questionable behavior. Instead, put your energy into making your own project special. Then sit back and purr over your welldeserved applause. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) You might not want to accept those suggested changes in your workplace. But don’t chuck them out before you check them out. You could be happily surprised. LIBRA (Sept.23 to October 22) Your holiday planning might have to take a back seat for a bit so that you can handle a problem with a friend or family member. Your schedule resumes by the 8th. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Relationships in general benefit during the early part of the week, including in the workplace. Also expect some overdue changes in a personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) “Prudence” should be your watchword this week. Best not to be too open about some of the things that are currently happening in your life. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Money is on your mind, so you’d best mind how you’re spending it. Take another look at that holiday budget and see where you can make adjustments. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Resolving to revive an old friendship could open some old wounds. Are you sure you want to risk that? Think this through before making a commitment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your need to know more about a new friend could lead to some startling revelations. Best advice: Keep an open mind about what you learn until all the facts are in. BORN THIS WEEK: Your loyalty to friends makes you a very special person to those whose lives you’ve touched. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
