“Holiday Fun in the Sun” Parade and WinterFest—Don’t Miss it! By Phyllis Hodges, Reporter Ready for some “Holiday Fun in the Sun”? That’s the theme for the December 13 SCC Golf Cart Parade and WinterFest. Parade entrants must return registrations to the CA Office by December 10. You can get them at the CA Office, the Atrium ticket kiosk and both Kings Point clubhouses. In addition to three raffles for $200, $300 and $500 for cart entries, prizes will be awarded for 18 decorated carts—thanks to Minto Communities, which is donating $6,000 for parade expenses. To add to the fun day, Minto is The parade will start promptly at 10 a.m. from the CA parking lot parallel to N. Pebble Beach Boulevard. It will turn right out of the lot on LaJolla, right on El Rancho, right on Ojai and left on Cherry Hills to the bandstand area. For parade information via email: Dave Birkett, davesccsic@gmail.com

holding its 4th Annual WinterFest which starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. That event promises to be better than ever. It will include almost 40 vendors-seven for food. There will also be free massages, a photo booth, caricatures and a pet contest (at noon). LADYHAWKE, a

local band, will be providing entertainment. Dave Birkett, parade chairman, said that, in addition to spreading the prize money among more participants this year, the committee is making another change for easier identification of winning carts. Prior to the

parade, a big red award ribbon will be affixed to the 18 winning carts. A lead cart will have a large sign alerting onlookers about the ribbons. However, until awards are presented at the end of the parade, neither the participants nor onlookers will know how those winners placed. All the winning carts will be parked in one area under the trees by the bandstand.

Hospice Illuminated with Lights of Love

The doors of the Hospice House are adorned with wreaths inviting all who enter to see the beautiful decorations and experience the warmth of the holiday spirit. Greeting them is a seven foot tree, donated by Ilona Merritt

of Sun City Center who also donated the trimmings, which included hand crafted houses, built and designed by Ilona, intermingled with poinsettias, bows and balls. Other wreaths are hung

throughout but a special treat is a Christmas House on display, also built and decorated by Mrs. Merritt. In the chapel, adjacent to the lobby, an area designated for and in honor of our veterans, is a Merritt-designed house, following the patriotic theme. And, in a designated “quiet room” another decorated tree welcomes visitors seeking solitude. All of these beautiful decorations are in place so that anyone attending the “Lights of

Love,” ceremony on Thursday, December 4 at the Sun City Hospice House - beginning at 6 p.m. - can tour the house and see the wonderful work Mrs. Merritt and volunteers Sally Ann Dickey and Darlene Lentis created for everyone’s enjoyment. Volunteers also fill holidaythemed mugs with toiletries, note pads, pencils, and other items, to be given to new patients as each arrives during this season. The Editor’s Corner

A Month of Lights & Wonder

By E. Adam Porter, Editor in Chief, News of Kings Point Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. As I’ve grown older the reasons have changed, but my fervor for tinsel time has yet to recede. There are so many reasons to love the Christmas season, but it can be tough to focus on those when we are surrounded by so much of the stuff that makes folks loathe the holidays. There’s a part of all of us that gets caught up in the stress of the marketing side of the holiday season. Fatter bellies, thinner wallets and higher stress levels. And that one !@#$% bulb that won’t stay lit no matter what you do. But, somewhere deeper inside is that kid who never quite forgot the wonder. Like the child in Polar Express, there’s a place in all of us where we can still hear the bells from Santa’s sleigh. All you have to do is let that inner child come out. Give that excited kid, sticky from cocoa and candy canes and too wired to sleep, a chance to get back behind the wheel of your head and your heart for a day or three. Need some inspiration? Check this out. Sun City Center kicks off the holiday season with the annual Holiday Cart Parade on Saturday, December 13. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will be followed by WinterFest at 11 a.m. And, of course, nearly every club in town is hosting some sort of holiday fun. Just flip through these pages, and you will find plenty to do.

Nights of Shimmering Lights.A few years back a handful of enterprising friends transformed the Hillsborough State Fairgrounds in Dover into

a full-immersion Christmas light experience. Drive through the light displays. Take a ride on the wagon. Browse vendor booths. Watch classic Christmas movies and nosh on some of the best donuts you will ever eat. It costs $20 per car to enter, and there are vendor booths with crafts and goodies for sale. Check out the website for details and tickets, www. nightsofshimmeringlights.com. Christmas Lane. Just off Dover Road, around the corner from Shimmering Lights, is one of the most incredible walkthrough light displays on the planet. With live music, visits from Santa and Christmas fun for all ages, Christmas Lane is a lovely holiday tradition to help excite your inner child www. christmaslane.org.

Symphony of Lights. The Shoppes At Wiregrass illuminates the season from here through the end of the year with a holiday tree-lighting show with background music by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Shows even include “snow.” It’s a fun, free event that’s guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit. This year, whatever you do, make sure to take some time and just enjoy the season. Gather with friends, eat too much, listen to carols you remember from childhood. Kick back with your favorite Christmas movies and just let all the “stuff” slide off your back. Enjoy the lights and embrace the wonder. After all, Christmas only comes once a year.

visiting dog, events geared to the patient—all part of what the Hospice House folks and volunteers do to spread cheer and love!! About Hospice Hospice is a concept that predates medieval days. Between AD 300 and 500, a place was designated in the community for the weary, homeless, sick, wounded or dying to receive care, rest and comfort. That Latin term “hospes,” used to describe

Page 3

these havens, was interpreted to “host and guest,” implying a mutual interaction and caring. Today, Hospice represents not a specific place of care but a concept of care emphasizing palliative rather curative, quality rather than quantity. The term “hospic” has nearly disappeared from use in any language. However, today, Hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process of our life journey. When there is a beginning, there is also an ending.

Now available … heart valve repair

without open-heart surgery The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital is among the first hospitals in Florida to offer the highly advanced MitraClip procedure

When the heart’s mitral valve – which controls blood flow through the heart – does not close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation (MR). MR can cause heart failure, with symptoms like shortness of breath and fluid buildup. Now there is a treatment that can reduce symptoms and possibly extend lives – and it’s available at The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Manatee Memorial is among the first hospitals in the United States to make MitraClip available to patients, after meeting rigorous criteria mandated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. Manatee Memorial’s MitraClip team consists of specially trained physicians in echocardiography, interventional cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. An important member of the team is the Valve Coordinator, Erin Crowell, BSN, CCRN, who acts as the hospital/physician liaison for patients and their families throughout the process. Ms. Crowell is present during the MitraClip insertion and follows patients from hospitalization to discharge.

FAITH IN FITNESS

Lack Of Sleep Will Make You Fat

By Rosie Korfant, JSA Medical Group Activities Coordinator Wow factor: A study in the journal PLoS Medicine brought out a deep connection between limited sleep, two hunger-controlling hormones, Ghrelin and Leptin and obesity. When you’re asleep, you produce the highest amount of growth hormones (GH). GH increases calcium, which maintains bone mass and promotes fat loss while it reduces storing fat. Sound complicated? Think of it this way: sleep more, lose more! (Fat, that is.) Here’s another fact—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that more than 35% of those who are sleep deprived (yawn, yawn,) are statistically almost identical to the obesity rate. Connect the dots and you can see the correlation is not a coincidence. Diet all you want, but it won’t make any difference if you don’t get at least your body’s required number of hours sleep each night. According to research printed in the Annals of Internal Medicine, dieters who were sleep deprived had a 55%

loss in fat reduction compared to those who took in plenty of zzzz’s for a restful time study. So, are you in debt? “Sleep debt,” that is. No matter what you think, you can’t make it up. Sure, caffeine will do the trick for a time, but the hormones that control fat cells don’t respond to that trick too often. Lost sleep is just that—lost sleep! If you try to make it up with an “oversleep” night of say, 10hours, your body pattern will rebel and won’t let you rest easy the next night. Your circadian rhythm, your inner alarm clock, will be happier if you go to bed and rise at about the same time each day, giving your body a sensible time of repair. Besides exercise and diet, this is the third puzzle part: sleep. It’s also a major balancing factor between health, weight and energy levels. So, here’s the scoop: Leptin represses hunger while Ghrelin (seems like a “gremlin,” right?) Well the “gremlin” stimulates your appetite—UGH! When you don’t get enough sleep, guess which growth hormone is most active? Yep, you got it—the “gremlin!” Just for fun, think of it this way: more sleep-less fat! I like that idea: more “zzzz’s”— more fit! Hmm where did I put my favorite PJ’s? Concetta was found in a container in the shelter’s parking lot in September of 2013. She is quiet, but playful when the other cats and kittens get rambunctious. She loves to nap on the bed on the lanai, watching the squirrels and birds that frequent the back yard. She’s a little standoffish at first, but will be happy to have a home to call her own. Please give her that forever home. As part of her adoption Concetta will be microchipped. She is current on her vaccinations and has been spayed. EST. DOB: September 2, 2012.

Winnie is an adult female Catahoula Leopard dog that has a lovely white coat with brindle patches. She is a little timid when meeting someone new, but warms quickly to gentle affection and treats. Occasionally she runs around like a spunky puppy playing ball, but likes it best when kissed and petted. She needs a home that can nurture her quiet disposition with love and attention. Winnie is current on vaccinations and has been spayed. As part of her adoption she will be microchipped. DOB: May 2, 2009

Bill Naylor grew up in South Chicago Illinois. He attended DePauw University in Greencastle Indiana. Like many of us he worked during college. In Bill’s case he worked two jobs, one which was far more challenging. His primary job was waiting tables at the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority House, however, more challenging than waiting tables was convincing Mary Dahlen also a student at DePauw and a member of the Sorority to become his wife. They were married in May 1958 and have 5 children scattered across the lower 48. Following graduation, Bill attended Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. When you chat with Bill, you realize how much he enjoyed his service time serving on the USS Arnold Isbell DD 869 before attending submarine school. His final Navy assignment was Officer in Charge Hydrographic Office Baltimore Maryland. Bill began his Industrial Career with Sun Oil as a technical representative in the Lubricants area. Several advancements later, Bill was the Corporate Hydrocarbon Manager. Bill also spent time with Belcher Oil Company winding up his career as a Corporate Vice President with Worth Chemical Corporation in North Carolina. After 40 years in the Industrial world, Bill and Mary felt the attraction of the Florida sun. Actually they had a long-term association with Sun City Center since Mary’s parents were among the early residents here and were active lawn bowlers. They recall many visits to her father’s favorite haunt - the original sawdust engineers shop.. They arrived in Sun City Center in May 2011 and quickly found the tennis courts and the golf links. Bill has retired from golf and tennis to concentrate on his hobbies of woodcarving, amateur cartooning, writing poetry and new lyrics for old songs. Bill has developed a particular talent for pyrographic art, which can be seen in the above photo.

Sun City Center Sew’nSews

Recently some quilters from the Sun City Center Sew’nSews enjoyed a potluck luncheon at the home of member Barb Babair. The ladies were treated to a viewing of Barb’s quilt collection, which is quite vast. They saw quilts done by Barb as well as those she purchased over the years. Many dated back to the early to mid 1900s. Each member brought a homemade dish to share as well as sharing the recipes for some of them. The Sew’nSews is a club for beginner and experienced sewers and quilters.. Not only do they share fellowship as they did with this luncheon, they also serve the community and the less fortunate. They sew many items for sale and the money then earned is used to further their projects. They will be selling their handcrafted items at the Dec. 6, Community Holiday Walk, at their club location at 915F Cherry Hills Dr. There will also be a free drawing for a Christmas wall hanging. Come join them and see what they are all about. They will be glad to answer questions and provide information about the club. GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club News

The GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club is a group of women who are part of an international organization whose objective is to Kings Point Quilters Gearing Up help women and families with issues that are of concern to them. For a Busy Season The Club donates to such causes as help for military families, and many local charities, including Mary Martha House, The Hope Fund, etc. Funding for these donations is accomplished through fundraisers and donations by its members. Now that may sound like a lot of work, and yes sometimes it is. But they also have a lot of fun. There are three functions that meet that need. Once a month everyone is invited to play Bunco, also once a month member birthdays are celebrated. A “Lunch Bunch” is also planned every so often where members are invited to take a trip to an interesting place, or a mall for shopping, with of course lunch being included. So it’s “not all work and no play.” Those celebrating a birthday during that month attend this special luncheon and are celebrated. All members who want to enjoy some By Jane Scully fun and to get to know one another are more than welcome to join The snowflakes are flying up north and the snowbirds are arriving in. Recently the quilters enjoyed a silk scarf-dyeing workshop taught by renowned silk dye and fiber artist Marlene Glickman. The whole dyeing process takes place in a small plastic bag, a system devised by Marlene after being asked to teach grade school children how to make gift scarfs for their mothers. Surely the members of the Kings Point Quilters would not have any problems dyeing their scarfs. After all, kids could do it. Each scarf is a unique creation with no two designs or color patterns alike. There is no such thing as a bad dye job. The workshop was a great success and all participants ended up with a beautiful scarf. A scarf fashion show was the highlight of the recent quilters luncheon. Not sure what was best, the scarf show or the out of this world salads and desserts. Upcoming events include a trunk show by Juanita Yeager of her Seated L to R:. Anne Rankin, Rosemary Maling, and Darlene Bartel.. quilt paintings. Nancy Lindberg will present a quilt show of traditional Standing L to R:. Swim Dancers Have Room For You

If you can swim two lengths of the lap pool, don’t mind getting your face and hair wet, would enjoy swimming to music along with a tiny challenge of remembering a swim choreography or two (or three) while improving muscle tone and breath control – there is a spot for you! The Sun City Center Swim Dancers, a team of synchronized swimmers, encourages women from our Kings Point and Sun City Center community to meet at the lap pool in the Atrium building on N. Pebble Beach. This team meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Friday mornings from 7:30 to 9 am. You can swim either one, two or three times a week – whatever fits your schedule! In the pool area, the team uses their own amplification and speakers to play the music to swim by. The team also meets for an hour before getting into the pool to learn simple choreography (exception is Friday morning). Prior experience is not needed, and you will be learning about “sculling, tubbing, planking, ballet legs and even floating” along with other of the many synchro figures you may have seen done at the Olympics. Obviously, our team is a few years more mature than the twenty-year-olds seen there, and the routines are adjusted accordingly. Actually the ages of our team spans from 55 to 79. Just grab a bag, toss in a suit, towel, shampoo, soap and whatever else you would take to the pool and come on and try it. There is no commitment unless you want to! For further information call Judy Quitsch, 642-0157.

Sun City Center Art Club December Exhibitor

Marcia Hansen will be showing her artwork at the gallery through December 30th. Her open house will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Art Club gallery, from 1:00 to 3 p.m. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served. “Florida Pastels by Marcia Hansen” Marcia Hansen is an instructor of pastel art at the Art Club in Sun City Center. She is a graduate of Russell Sage College and has taken graduate level fine arts courses at the College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY and at SUNY Albany, NY. Marcia taught art classes out of her studio in upstate NY for many years before moving permanently to Florida. Her artwork has won numerous first place awards in New York and in Florida. She has shown in Saratoga Springs, Albany, Troy, and other New York towns. More recently, Marcia’s work has shown in Florida at the John Crawford Gallery and at the Sun City Center Art Club Gallery. Her work has sold throughout the country and is in permanent collections. Marcia has a background in both fine arts and decorative arts. Her use of pastels incorporates a variety of application methods that include pastels on paper, canvas, and sanded board. She enjoys layering pastels using rich intense colors often over painted backgrounds.. That technique gives her paintings depth and beauty. Her love of Florida is apparent with her paintings depicting a colorful variety of wildlife including birds, animals, and landscapes that will be very familiar to folks who live in the Tampa Bay area. “The colors of Florida are sometimes bright and bold, and other times soft and gentle. But, Florida is always beautiful and usually full of surprises. Painting inspirations are everywhere. I hope people will look at these pastels and see these animals and places differently, to see their rich colors and their individuality, and then just smile.”

It is also one very unusual little truck. And that’s why he bought it. “I liked its rarity,” he said. It’s called the Corvair Rampside, because it has a door in the passenger side panel that folds down to the ground to make a ramp, so anything with wheels can be rolled up into the cargo bed, rather than heaved up over a tailgate. Bert’s Rampside is a meticulously restored example that would be right at home on a showroom floor. Like all Corvairs, it is powered by an air-cooled flat engine with six horizontally opposed cylinders. With a four-speed manual transmission and 80 horsepower, he said it drives well—up to about 55 mph. The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of every month in the Apollo Beach Winn-Dixie Plaza on US41, with a rain date the following Thursday. There is no charge for spectators or participants, who vote to select the cruiser of the month. About 100 of the area’s finest antique and collectible cars often take part, accompanied by classic oldies music played by DJ Joey Ferrante. Thompson’s Auto Parts and Sun City Center Funeral Home sponsor the event. For information, call Chet at 813-842-1511.

Redeemer Women to Meet

The women’s organization of Redeemer Lutheran Church (Women of the ELCA) will meet on Wednesday, December 17th beginning with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. The program, beginning at 10 a.m., will be a presentation by Samaritan Services. Everyone is invited to attend. Following the business meeting, members will enjoy a Christmas luncheon. For more information, call 813-634-1292. The picture shows Board members at a recent planning meeting.

Members of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and Sun City Center residents can now get help with household chores that are too difficult for them. Church leaders have formed an Angel Network of volunteers, members able to help do pesky tasks such as changing air conditioner filters or batteries in smoke alarms, for example. However, the volunteers don’t help with any repairs requiring certified repairmen. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:4 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.” There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.” Angel Network volunteers are giving the gift of service to members of St. Andrew and community residents who are no longer able to handle certain household tasks. St. Andrew is located at 1239 Del Webb W. Blvd. and can be reached at 634-1252.

The Emergency Squad recently received a $500 donation from Coastal Insurance Underwriters. Mr. Greg Waltz, the Squad’s insurance agent, presented the check to Chief Dennis Floto.

Volunteer of The Month is Marty Gifford

Marty and her husband.moved to Sun City Center in 1998. After her husband passed away, she received several calls from Emergency Squad members trying to recruit her into our family. Fortunately, they were successful because Marty has been with the Squad for ten years. Marty has held many positions.on the Squad. She has been Assistant Chief, Personnel, Secretary on the Board of Directors, Dispatcher on Team One, Assistant Treasurer and is currently our Chief Financial Officer. Prior to moving to Sun City Center, Marty spent most of her time raising four children and is extraordinarily proud to tell you about her eight grandsons and one granddaughter. When time allows, Marty enjoys playing golf, bunka, knitting, crossstitching and is very active in the German American club. She lives with her best friend, Reinhold Baal, who is from Germany. We are so fortunate to have such an outstanding, talented and dedicated woman serving on the Squad.

US National Lawn Bowling Championships Over four and a half days in early November, 48 competitors from across the United States played in 4 disciplines to try to obtain a place in the US National lawn bowling team. Six players from each of the 7 Divisions in the US (with an extra team from the Southwest) - Southwest Stars, Southwest Stripes, Pacific Intermountain, Central, South Central, Northwest, Northeast and Southeast - represented these Divisions and the members for the Southeast included four Sun City Center residents. They were Chris Heller (Skip) & Cassie Krowl (Lead) in Ladies’ Pairs and Glen Baumann (Skip) and Bob Ferguson (Lead) in Men’s Pairs. The two other events were Ladies’ and Men’s Singles. Two games were played each day from Wednesday to Friday, with the last planned game on Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon, there were playoffs for the winners of Men’s and Ladies’ Singles. Many spectators stayed on and were treated to some excellent lawn bowling, as they had been throughout the week. The hospitality of Sun City Center lawn bowlers did not just extend to the greens, however, with an informal Italian dinner held on Thursday night, a Golden Bias members’ dinner at the home of SCCLBC members Brenda & Mike Perkins on Friday night and the Awards Banquet held at Renaissance on Saturday night. Many other SCCLBC members provided essential assistance in the kitchen (refreshments and lunches) and on the greens (greenskeepers, markers and umpires) throughout the tournament.

Men’s Pairs Winners

Ladies’ Singles Winner

Jeff Covell & Todd Wagers (Northwest).

Ladies’ Pairs Winners Dee McSparran (Southwest Stars).

Men’s Singles Winner

Jackie Tucker & Regina Banares (South Central).

Lawn bowling is not a difficult game to learn and is one that can be played socially and/ or on a more competitive level. Visit our website to learn more

Inaugural Tournament for SCC Lawn Bowling Club The first tournament of their Winter Season was held by SCC Lawn Bowling Club recently, attracting 14 teams from other cities - Sarasota, Clearwater and Port Charlotte - as well as 14 of their own teams. Under traditionally sunny skies, three 12-end games were played over the course of the day and some fine bowling was enjoyed by all. At the end of play, the Sarasota team of Sandra and George Whitelaw had won 3 games with the most points and got the top prize. Teams from Sun City Center who were also in the prize money with 3 wins were Jim Byrne & Kathy Gonnella in 2nd place, Barb & Joe Mignogna in 3rd place, Brenda & Mike Perkins in 5th. Winning 2 games with high points were the teams of Nancy Spencer & Phil Lascola 6th; Ava and Jim Casper were the high one-game winners. Special thanks must be given to the numerous volunteer club members who prepared the greens prior to play, provided snacks throughout the day and to Tournament Director Tony Hawken who ran the event smoothly as usual. If you’ve never tried lawn bowling, come and give it a go. “I wish I had started this game in my 30s” is often heard among

John Donnelly Table Tennis Club Celebration

On September 24, 2014, 22 members of the John Donnelly Table Tennis Club plus their guests, held their annual celebration in honor of John Donnelly. John founded our club in 1980. John passed away last summer. He was 106 years young. He competed in tournaments winning gold even when he was well in his 90’s. John married when he was 95 to Marian, 25 years younger. She is standing in the front row to the left of his picture. At the age of 99, John was a guest on the Jay Leno’s nighttime live TV show. Jay Leno had a table tennis table set up and the two of them hit the ball back and forth. It ended when John smashed the ball over the net. Table tennis is a sport of a lift time and John’s memory will forever be in our hearts.

What’s this you say - “A Juniors Tournament in lawn bowling? In Sun City Center?” You heard right. Every year, the club holds a Junior/ Senior Tournament and this year was no exception. Let’s get the definition of each category sorted out, shall we? A “Junior” in this case is a lawn bowler who is over 75; a Senior is one who is over 80. Yes, you read right - those are the Juniors and Seniors who participated in the recent annual Junior/ Senior Singles Tournaments. The Juniors section had 4 entries and the Seniors had 5. It isn’t the age of the competitors that restricted the number of entries; it’s simply that the Singles discipline of the game is not one that everyone enjoys playing and is not played often. However, the feeling you get Howard Baker when bowling as a Singles player is one of Junior Winner great satisfaction since there is no pressure from other players on a team - you simply do your best and hope for the most points. At the end of the week, four finalists battled it out for the championships. They were (Juniors) Howard Baker and Tony Hawken and (Seniors) Richie Bozza and Ben Caudill. When “the dust had cleared” and 21 points were reached by one player in each game, the winners were (Juniors) Howard Baker and (Seniors) Ben Caudill, both pictured below. Congratulations to all the competitors who took part and especially to the overall winners. For more information about the Ben Caudill sport, visit our website at http:// Senior Winner suncitycenterlawnbowlingclub.com. Free lessons are given every month; a sign up sheet is in the Eberhardt Building located behind the lawn bowling greens.

Just Thanks!

According to Feeding America, a regional food bank in Tampa Bay, a stunning 700,000 people in West Central Florida struggle with hunger every day — and 250,000 of them are children. Further, these numbers are inching up year after year. “Some of our neighbors are among those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” says Tom Bullaro, codirector of Our Lady’s Pantry with his wife Anita. Our Lady’s Pantry is associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Migrant Mission, in Wimauma. Pantry volunteers work Tuesday and Friday mornings to buy and sort food, stock the shelves, and then fill up boxes to give to families on Saturday mornings, between 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Just one year ago, the Pantry provided food for about 150 families a week. In recent weeks, that number has soared to an average 192 families each Saturday. “We would never have been able to meet this increased need were it not for the striking generosity of this community,” says Bullaro. “We have so many people to thank, starting with countless individuals who just send a check or drop off bags of food for our neighbors in need. We also receive periodic grants from a number of local organizations including the Interfaith Council (the Nearly New Shop) and the Community Foundation of Sun City Center. “But most of our support comes from the Project Hunger donations we receive from parishioners of Prince of Peace and Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are so grateful to Father Kovanis of Prince of Peace

for allowing us to hold our Project Hunger collection each month. Likewise, we thank Deacon Ron for allowing us to hold our Project Hunger collection at Our Lady of Guadalupe — and also for providing us with a home for Our Lady’s Pantry.” Bullaro points out that the Pantry has outgrown the small classroom they had been using for years and is hoping to raise funds for a new building. The expanded room will provide additional food and freezer space to allow Our Lady’s Pantry to better serve adults and children in our community. “We are so appreciative of anything you can do to help,” says Bullaro. “We welcome monetary donations, especially, because we can buy food at Feeding America Tampa Bay for $.18 a pound. A little bit of money typically goes a long way toward feeding our neighbors in need. “On those occasions when Feeding America is low on food, however, as has happened several times this past month, we need to dip further into our financial reserves to purchase food from local supermarkets at current market prices. “Thank you again for your generosity.” If you wish to help further with food, please make a check out to Our Lady’s Pantry, c/o Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Migrant Mission Church, and send it to 16650 U.S. Highway 301 South, Wimauma, Fl. 33598. If you wish to contribute to the new Pantry, please make out your check to Our Lady’s Pantry – Building Expansion, and mail it to the above address.

Confessions of a Recipe File

In op’ning up my soul of indexed memories to eager eyes and hopeful appetites, I hope someone will find my “lemon gemeries” and be induced to try these little bites. The children now long gone, my card’s forsaken; it hides its story in my darkened file…. Can childhood’s sweet nostalgia reawaken, and resurrect these gems to bring a smile? In great-grandmother’s hand this heirloom came, its fading ink and ear-worn edges still reflecting happy times and wide acclaim, the warmest family craving to fulfill. Oh, will temptation e’er produce an urge to search again within in my “treasure chest” this one thing known to satisfy a splurge, so easily accessed upon request? John F. Foster

When Autumn Comes to the Smokies Growing up, classroom windows heralded its arrival.

Jagged paper cut-outs, playfully marked with crayon, floated gently downward on glass from invisible branches. Their promise? A display of seasonal splendor is coming! But living in a land of perpetual sunshine and ubiquitous viridity, the promise was lost for decades. Yet I’ve found a place where the promise thrives. Here broad strokes of blue mist lift, revealing Majestic mountains covered in Hues of monochromatic green that grew weary; Brilliant shades of Orange, Yellow, Gold, Brown, Magenta, Purple and Red are compassionate surrogates. Yellows - far, wide and blinding; Reds - scarce, sporadic and commanding. Variegated palates of leaves remain; Randomly they depart from their once summery homes on whispers of cool breezes. Last and next scenes vie for most memorable; Eye and lens compete for most accurate. And when the splendor is nearly spent, I see the promise kept... When autumn comes to the Smokies.

Contract Bridge Super Crossword

By Steve Becker FAMOUS HAND

IRISH SHUFFLE

This deal was played in a tournament many years ago by John Moran, California expert. It features an unusual situation where Moran, the declarer, had to hope that a critical finesse would lose, because if it won, the contract could not be made! Furthermore, when the finesse unfortunately succeeded, apparently doing him in, Moran neatly extricated himself by inducing an unsuspecting opponent to solve the unsolvable problem for him. East covered the opening queen-of-hearts lead with the

king, and Moran let him hold the trick. He then took the heart return with the ace, led the diamond jack and finessed after West followed low. Had the finesse lost, Moran would have had no trouble scoring 10 tricks regardless of what East returned. When the diamond jack held, however, the suit became hopelessly blocked. West’s king would naturally appear on the next diamond lead, but if Moran won the trick with the ace, he would cut himself off from dummy’s remaining diamonds. If instead he permitted the king to hold the trick, West would cash three heart tricks to defeat the contract. Moran, well known for his imaginative play, decided that his only hope was to enlist West’s help. So at trick four he led the nine of hearts! West pounced on this with the ten and, without further thought, cashed the jack of hearts. Moran thereupon discarded his diamond ten, unblocking the suit, and after West took his last heart -- the fourth trick for the defense -declarer claimed the rest. West could have thwarted Moran’s plan if he had, for example, returned the king of diamonds at trick five instead of cashing the heart jack. The nineof-hearts play by South was a gift horse whose teeth should have been very carefully examined. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True

By Samantha Weaver •It was beloved American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson who made the following sage observation: Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis. •As the holidays and the inevitable family gatherings approach, you might want to prepare yourself to engage in logomachy -- a battle fought with words. • In the African nation of Swaziland, it is illegal for a witch to fly a broomstick at an altitude above 150 meters. •If you’re like 91 percent of Americans, you sometimes eat breakfast for dinner. •You may have been unaware of it for the past 11 months, but 2014 has been the International Year of Family Farming, so declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. •Place-names sometimes enter the English language through roundabout means. Take Arkansas, for instance: That state’s name comes from the word akansa, which is a French pronunciation of an Algonquin name for the Native American Quapaw people. The original word means either “people of the south wind” or “downriver people.” •You might be surprised to learn that the fax machine was invented in the 19th century. In 1843, a man named Alexander Bain patented Bain’s Telegraph, which was able to transmit an exact copy of lines, letters and shapes to chemically treated paper on the other end of the line. •In 2013, for the first time, the United States offered a larger market for wine than France. Thought for the Day: All one’s life as a young woman one is on show, a focus of attention, people notice you. You set yourself up to be noticed and admired. And then, not expecting it, you become middle-aged and anonymous. No one notices you. You achieve a wonderful freedom. It’s a positive thing. You can move about unnoticed and invisible. -- Doris Lessing © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning -- including travel arrangements -- without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those stilloutstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
