Creativity and fun are always on display at the Holiday Cart Parade.

By Phyllis Hodges, Reporter Ready for some “Holiday Fun in the Sun”? That’s the theme for the December 13 SCC Golf Cart Parade and WinterFest. Parade entrants must return registrations to the CA Office by December 10. You can get them at the CA Office, the Atrium ticket kiosk and both Kings Point clubhouses. In addition to three raffles for $200, $300

and $500 for cart entries, prizes will be awarded for 18 decorated carts— thanks to Minto Communities, which is donating $6,000 for parade expenses. To add to the fun day, Minto is holding its 4th Annual WinterFest which starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. That event promises to be better than ever. It will include almost 40 vendors--seven for food.

Every Wednesday: Orientation for new members in the Board Room at 1 p.m.

Holiday Breakfast Benefits Fireworks By Phyllis Hodges, Reporter It’s e arly to b e t hin king about July 4 fireworks, but it is time to think about the breakfast on December 6 that will help make them possible. The day’s schedule begins in the CA Central Campus Florida Room. A $5 breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, toast, juice and coffee will start at 7 a.m. and continue until noon. The breakfast is part of the annual CA HOLIDAY WALK. Club rooms will open around 9 a.m. so you can browse and admire their displays. It is a great time to shop for unique handmade gifts. Sam and Joanne Sudman, breakfast organizers, said they are continually amazed at the spirit with which volunteers step forward. A crew of 125 will be on hand helping with the breakfast, and members of the Organ and Keyboard Club are generously donating time to enhance the festive mood. L ast year, 825 breakfasts were sold to help finance 2014 fireworks (cancelled due to construction). Proceeds from this year’s breakfast will be added to the funds raised last year. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the holiday season with friends and family—and contribute to the fireworks fund too!

Members of the NEWS of Sun City Center staff were on hand to say: “Hi, Neighbor!”.

Another Successful “Hi, Neighbor!”

By Phyllis Hodges, Reporter “We already love it and never want to leave,” said George Hawn, who visited this year’s “Hi, Neighbor!” after being here only six weeks. We heard similar comments from other newcomers who found the event to be extremely helpful as they begin familiarizing themselves with SCC. Janet Ditmore, Hospit ality Chairman, who organizes the yearly event, said, “We had a capable and tireless group of volunteers. The changes we made this year to open more space and to organize the table placements by grouping similar activities seemed to help the flow of traffic. Even with more participants and more attendees, there was better access for interaction between the exhibitors and the attendees. Thanks to the 95 groups who participated.” Janet sends special kudos to Claudia

Hinson of the CA staff and to Michael Chute and his maintenance team at Community Hall who put in many hours of work and to Aston Gardens for providing cookies for the visitors—estimated at over 800. For LOTS more event pictures check out our Facebook page: www. facebook.com/NewsofSCC. See Hi, Neighbor on page 5.

Meet Your Neighbors

By Agnes Baker Meet Ilona Merritt Married to Russell since 2001, Ilona was born in Hamburg, Germany and came to America in April, 1954. She settled with family members in Toledo, Ohio. She received her Associate Degree and was the Recreational Director for the City of Toledo, working in the Senior Citizen Program. She also served as the first Activity Director in a nursing home run by the Little Sister of the Poor. With the economic turndown, Ilona found herself without a job, widowed, and two sons to raise, and so this resourceful lady formed a group tour company. She planned, organized and escorted most of the tours, which also gave her the opportunity of seeing many sections of the United States as well as foreign countries. Running the company led Ilona to the world of computers, when she organized mailing lists as well as designed her sales brochures. In 1996, after selling her business and moving to Sun City Center, she joined the Computer Club and took over the editing of their newsletter. Now, some 18 years later, she still has the job, serving during that time as president of the Club as well. Her volunteer work spans many years, starting with her move to Toledo. She worked at the Lutheran Old Folks Home, doing surprise events for the residents. Until it closed, she worked with the female residents at the Balm Prison teaching them computer skills. Additionally, Ilona served for fifteen years on the Security Patrol. For three years she was a member of the Synchronized Swimmers team. However, she informs me that, even though she enjoyed the challenge of the organized swims, she took more pleasure in designing the islands that floated in the pool at the beginning of each show. She is a charter member and past president of the German American Club and is a director with the Guardianship

Foundation of SCC, working with special client Martha V. Olson. She also serves as ombuds person for The News of Sun City Center. Russell enthusiastically endorsed her desires to expand her world to include learning to play the accordion, which went from a very small one to the larger model, and then she chose to learn the Steirische Harmonika, known as the Button Box. An Alpine Instrument, it is a real challenge to play. Her other hobby? Again, with Russell’s encouragement, she builds miniature houses—not just doll but chalets, stores, etc, and finishes each room down to the smallest detail. We were amazed at the other miniatures on display in her home, including a miniature painting and a miniature easel about four inches high. She is currently working on organizing a miniature club so she can work with others. We are very fortunate to have talented folks in our community, doubly fortunate when they are willing to share those talents and their good heart with us. Say hello to such a person … Meet Ilona!

Ham Radio Operators Combine a Hobby with Service By Phyllis Hodges, Reporter Do you know what the Amateur Radio Club (ARC) really does in that space in the Maintenance Building? It was eye-opening to say the least to talk with Rick Sochon, president, Bill Adkins, the club’s newest member, and other members—their enthusiasm is contagious. The club is much more than just a place for members to gather and chat with folks all over the world, just because they can. “The County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) says they could not operate without us,” Rick says with pride. ARC is the area’s only group that can be a communications bridge between the many local, county, state and federal organizations that would play roles during a natural or manmade disaster. Visiting the ARC web site (SCCARC.info) would be useful for all of us. It tells how to get help or contact out-of-area family and friends during disasters. The site is actually located in Michigan to avoid any possibility of it being shut down during a local emergency. ARC members combine a hobby they are passionate about with a desire to serve. And serve they do! Few of us have any idea how many

that could be used during extended power outages. Members pay for their own equipment, but the CA and various grants fund club expenses. Bill Adkins who came to SCC a year ago from Pennsylvania via Ruskin is the club’s newest member. He has an extensive aerospace engineering background and is impressed with the seriousness that ARC members Look for this 8 1/2 x 11” signal at the home approach training, practicing and of 70 ARC members during an area-wide, maintaining equipment. an avid radio controlled airplane enthusiast. He says over the years he has accumulated about a dozen helicopters and 40 or so airplanes, including jets. “I just love technology,” he says. hours they spend serving their fellow SCC residents. For example, at the last fireworks, they had 20 members stationed every 200 feet around the perimeter communicating messages that everyone needed to hear something at the same time. At the upcoming golf cart parade, they will be monitoring the route. They also help at community events such as the Methodist Church’s recent Trunk and Treat. The building housing ARC is rated for Hurricane 5. Rick says power for the equipment is no problem since they have 12-volt battery backup power there. Bill Adkins built this drone as an experiment and is the only ARC member with experience to operate it. It can take photos now, but he plans to add a video camera that could be used in situations requiring an aerial view, such as search and rescue.

Water Leaks – The infrastructure of our community involves underground water pipes, electric lines and phone lines. When there is a water leak, power outage or disruption to our phones, our dispatch center becomes the command center for notifications. A driver is usually dispatched to sites to tr y to determine whether it is a county problem or a resident’s problem. We contact the appropriate utility and will follow up with the caller on the action taken. Missing Persons – Recently a wife came into the office reporting her husband missing – he has Alzheimer’s. Captain of day came back to office to talk to resident and advised Patrol cars to search for husband. Captain and wife searched for her husband and located him – a good ending for all. The Security Patrol office is open every day of the year, 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. One Saturday, a couple stopped in the office inquiring about SCC. They were driving down I-75 and were researching retirement communities. Our dispatcher gave them information and advised them to come back and visit the Information Center. Many times, visitors and new residents stop in for directions and information about SCC. These are just some of the call activities that the Security Patrol addresses daily. Be a part of this valuable service organization by calling 813-642-2020. Be a volunteer, make a donation and support your Security Patrol of Sun City C enter. We are funded 100% by your generous donations.

One advantage of the software update is the ability to reserve multiple items without re-entering your barcode number for each item. First, log in to “My Account” with your CA barcode number. October brought an increase in Sun City Center traffic as well as an increase in calls to the Security Patrol. Many of our residents call us with concerns, questions and what action to take about many situations. Pets – Many calls come in reporting beloved pets are lost, get out when the door opens or just run away on their daily outings. Patrol vehicles are dispatched to the vicinity to look for the missing pet. Also, many calls are received from residents who spot a lost animal or the resident has a stray pet and is looking for the owner. Fortunately, many pets are returned to their owners due to our residents and the services the Patrol offers. Concerns/Questions – Most of our dispatch shifts record concerns or questions that our residents need to have answered. Some examples of calls received are the resident who was annoyed with his neighbor’s barking dog; the wife who was upset that her husband had fallen on the lanai; the resident concerned about a trailer parked on the sidewalk; the call asking what to dial for long-distance operator assistance; or the caller suspecting he/she was scammed. The Security Patrol is not only a resource for Sun City Center residents but also for those out of state. The Patrol offers support on many concerns. There was a call from a lady wanting verification that her aunt still lived in SCC because she needs to notify her of a death. Another call from a homeowner on vacation, but had a funny feeling about their house and would like a security driver to go by to see if all is well.

Security Patrol Calls

Submitted by Elaine Birkinshaw It has been an interesting month with construction inside the library and all around us, but we are soldiering on and we appreciate your patience while we have been getting through this challenging time. As we approach completion of the restrooms, changing of our main electrical service and connecting to the new addition, there will be intermittent closings. We will try to give you as much notice as possible but we need to be flexible to meet the needs of the contractor’s schedule. The good news is when construction is complete we will have a new entrance, new restrooms and a beautiful addition with a reading area and computer room. Because we cannot anticipate when we will be open or closed, we are not currently listed as a pickup location for Hillsborough County materials. It takes about one week on each end of a closure to reroute reserves and we rarely have that much lead time. We apologize for this inconvenience, knowing that many of you depend on Hillsborough reserves, but we anticipate being able to get back into the regular routing some time in December. Our SCC Library catalog was updated while we were closed and we have received some nice compliments about the new look.

SCC’s First Communal Facility

By Sylvia Willis, History Society Our first residents were greeted with top-class recreational facilities in the center of our original development. These included: a 9-hole golf course (North Lakes); outdoor swimming pool and picnic area; shuffleboard courts; croquet on the lawn in front of Town Hall; horseshoes; lawn bowling, and arts and crafts buildings. Swan Lake, the former farm’s cattle watering hole, had been developed into a lake with a beach and a fishing pier. No former pioneers taming the wilderness ever had it so good!

Looking southwest over SCC in 1963.

New clubs quickly formed, a library opened in the Town Hall, Mealson-Wheels began deliveries in 1963, and our Emergency Squad began providing emergency services in 1964. In 1964 a Civic Association (CA) was incorporated to represent all owners in contracts with the developer, and to maintain the ownership of recreational and communal property. Town Hall 1967 before our totem pole succumbed to termites.

As an unincorporated community – then and now – Sun City Center’s volunteer corps has always been the backbone of our town. We are known today as a premier retirement community in the United States. This would not be possible without the amazing amount of time and talents so generously donated to provide many required services and support our high quality of life. Next time we will look at the many ways our volunteers began and continue to enrich this fabulous place. Anyone know how to carve a totem pole?

Is your

HEART RACING to keep up?

Our AFib and Heart Rhythm Centers take matters of the heart seriously… and you should, too. You know your heart…and you know when something just doesn’t feel right. It could be a potentially serious problem – Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). While AFib is one of the most common cardiac irregularities, its diagnosis indicates that blood isn’t moving properly through the heart, which increases the risk of stroke and congestive heart failure. Listen to your heart today. Contact HCA West Florida at 855-614-7290 for a physician referral to see a cardiac specialist near you. What are symptoms of AFib? • Shortness of breath

Frank Kepley, CAPT, USN (Ret), Military Correspondent The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) recently held a luncheon to honor the leaders of the Sun City Center (SCC) and Kings Point (KP) military and civic organizations that have supported the many MFST endeavors. The luncheon was held at the Sun City Center Freedom Plaza Club on October 24, 2014. Colin Howgill, MFST chairman, thanked all of the honored guests for their generous support of the MFST goals. He then introduced each guest and provided background material on the organization. Prior to the luncheon a group photograph was taken which included the community leaders and MFST Board of Trustees. MFST is a 501(c)(3) charitable trust established in 1992 and headquartered in SCC Freedom Plaza. Using contributions the MFST provides significant benefits to both national and local individuals and programs related to military and federal employees. Some of the beneficiaries are JROTC cadets, scholarships to children and grandchildren, assistance to Homeless Women Veterans, Guide Dog training, the VA’s Operation Helping Hand and other similar charitable endeavors. The MFST Board of Trustees has voted to contribute $5,000 to the new Astro-Turf dog runs that Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc., plan to install. The total cost of the runs will be $40,000.

Get to Know Your Local Leathernecks Our membership consists of SCC and Kings Point veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps, and of the U.S. Navy who served with Marine Corps units. We have veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, as well as other lesser-known actions. The club was formed primarily to encourage a continuation of the camaraderie and fellowship that distinguishes our Corps. We also work to support active-duty service men and women, as well as other worthwhile causes. Some of our past and current activities include: Donations to

local organizations including The Emergency Squad, Southeastern Guide Dogs, the Patriots Club, the Deputies’ Darlings holiday gift program, the Shriners Club and others. Contributions to Marine Corps programs including the Commanders’ Unit Library Program that offers Kindle readers loaded with important material to deploying troops, and to the U.S. Marine Corps Museum. Collecting and sending purchase coupons to Marines and other service members overseas to help them save on groceries and other necessities.

Last year, we sent 750 pounds, or 1,097,250 coupons worth, a potential half a million dollars in savings. Establishment of the Toys for Tots U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Christmas toy collection program in this area. The local program has since been adopted by the Riverview Marine Corps League detachment. Providing a Marine Corps presence and appropriate farewell ceremonies at funerals for our fallen comrades. The club meets at 18:30 the third Tuesday of each month in the Sandpiper Room of the Atrium Building.

Now available … heart valve repair

without open-heart surgery The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital is among the first hospitals in Florida to offer the highly advanced MitraClip procedure

When the heart’s mitral valve – which controls blood flow through the heart – does not close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation (MR). MR can cause heart failure, with symptoms like shortness of breath and fluid buildup. Now there is a treatment that can reduce symptoms and possibly extend lives – and it’s available at The Valve Institute at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Manatee Memorial is among the first hospitals in the United States to make MitraClip available to patients, after meeting rigorous criteria mandated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. Manatee Memorial’s MitraClip team consists of specially trained physicians in echocardiography, interventional cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. An important member of the team is the Valve Coordinator, Erin Crowell, BSN, CCRN, who acts as the hospital/physician liaison for patients and their families throughout the process. Ms. Crowell is present during the MitraClip insertion and follows patients from hospitalization to discharge.

GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club News

The GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club is a group of women who are part of an international organization with the objective to help women and families with issues that are of concern to them. The Club donates to such causes as help for military families, and many local charities, including Mary Martha House,The Hope Fund, etc. Funding for these donations is accomplished through fund raisers, and donations by its members. Now that may sound like a lot of work, and yes sometimes it is. But they also have a lot of fun. There are three functions that meet that need. Once a month everyone is invited to play Bunco, also once a month member birthdays are celebrated. A “Lunch Bunch” is also planned every so often where members are invited to take a trip to an interesting place, or a mall for shopping, with of course lunch being included. So it’s “not all work and no play.” Those celebrating a birthday during that month attend this special luncheon and are celebrated. All members who want to enjoy some fun and to get to know one another are more than welcome to join in. It’s always a fun event. If you would like more information in order to join this club, please contact Pat Huisinga, Membership Chairman, at 815-275-0001.

What’s a Rampside? Cruiser of the Month!

A 1961 Chevrolet Corvair pickup owned by Bert Schleissing of Riverview is the Roamin Oldies Car Club’s November Cruiser of the Month. It is also one very unusual little truck. And that’s why he bought it. “I liked its rarity,” he said. It’s called the Corvair Rampside, because it has a door in the passenger side panel that folds down to the ground to make a ramp, so anything with wheels can be rolled up into the cargo bed, rather than heaved up over a tailgate. Bert’s Rampside is a meticulously restored example that would be right at home on a showroom floor. Like all Corvairs, it is powered by an air-cooled flat engine with six horizontally opposed cylinders. With a four-speed manual transmission and 80 horsepower, he said it drives well—up to about 55 mph. The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of every month in the Apollo Beach Winn-Dixie Plaza on US41, with a rain date the following Thursday. There is no charge for spectators or participants, who vote to select the cruiser of the month. About 100 of the area’s finest antique and collectible cars often take part, accompanied by classic oldies music played by DJ Joey Ferrante. Swim Dancers Have Room For You

If you can swim two lengths of the lap pool, don’t mind getting your face and hair wet, would enjoy swimming to music along with a tiny challenge of remembering a swim choreography or two (or three) while improving muscle tone and breath control – there is a spot for you! The Sun City Center Swim Dancers, a team of synchronized swimmers, encourages women from our Kings Point and Sun City Center community to meet at the lap pool in the Atrium building on N. Pebble Beach. This team meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Friday mornings from 7:30 to 9 a.m. You can swim either one, two or three times a week – whatever fits your schedule! In the pool area, the team uses their own amplification and speakers to play the music to swim by. The team also meets for an hour before getting into the pool to learn simple choreography (exception is Friday morning). Prior experience is not needed, and you will be learning about “sculling, tubbing, planking, ballet legs and even floating” along with other of the many synchro figures you may have seen done at the Olympics. Obviously, our team is a few years more mature than the twentyyear-olds seen there, and the routines are adjusted accordingly. Actually the ages of our team spans from 55 to 79. Just grab a bag, toss in a suit, towel, shampoo, soap and whatever else you would take to the pool and come on and try it. There is no commitment unless you want to! For further information call Judy Quitsch, 642-0157.

his service time serving on the USS Arnold Isbell DD 869 before attending submarine school. His final Navy assignment was Officer in Charge Hydrographic Office Baltimore Maryland. Bill began his Industrial Career with Sun Oil as a technical representative in the Lubricants area. Several advancements later, Bill was the Corporate Hydrocarbon Manager. Bill also spent time with Belcher Oil Company winding up his career as a Corporate Vice President with Worth Chemical Corporation in North Carolina. After 40 years in the Industrial world, Bill and Mary felt the attraction of the Florida sun. Actually they had a long-term association with Sun City Center since Mary’s parents were among the early residents here and were active lawn bowlers. They recall many visits to her father’s favorite haunt - the original sawdust engineers shop. They arrived in Sun City Center in May 2011 and quickly found the tennis courts and the golf links. Bill has retired from golf and tennis to concentrate on his hobbies of woodcarving, amateur cartooning, writing poetry and new lyrics for old songs. Bill has developed a particular talent for pyrographic art, which can be seen in the photo.

Men’s Chorus Annual Christmas Concert

December 14, 2014 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Del Webb Blvd. W. The Christmas season is fast approaching and the SCC Men’s Chorus has been hard at work since early September preparing for the five performances they have scheduled for December. For the first time, this coming December, the chorus will be singing in Ellenton, FL. At the Terra Siesta Community in addition to the four other concerts scheduled for SCC. Their annual Christmas concert, which will be open to the public, will be presented on December 14th. The thirty-plus member chorus has been in existence for over 50 years and is currently under the direction of Mr. Lynn Hirschfeld. The accompanist is Mrs. Clair Hadley. Several new singers were welcomed into the chorus this fall, however the directed stated, “We always have room for a few more men who can read music and enjoy singing in a quality men’s chorus.” The chorus is happily booked up for this Christmas season, but have a few open dates for the upcoming 2015 spring season. They will be performing an entirely new musical program next spring, which will include patriotic songs, Broadway hits, spiritual numbers, comedy songs, soloists and a quartet. For more information about the chorus, either to book them for a performance or to become a member, just call Bob Garrod, President, at 813-634-4110.

By Uta Kuhn On Saturday October 15, upwards of 170 ladies attended a fundraiser, which was sponsored by the GFWC Woman’s Club of Sun City Center. A catered lunch was served and the ladies had a chance to view the gowns and socialize. The presentation by Leigh-Ann Brown, of the evolving history of wedding gowns through the years, was absolutely spellbinding. All attendees listened very attentively to the descriptions and interesting facts she had about the gowns. Lee-Ann was definitely an accomplished presenter. To top off the event, 14 gift baskets donated by Club members and local businesses were raffled off, and according to the Treasurer the raffle was a huge success.

Sun City Center Sew’nSews

Recently some quilters from the Sun City Center Sew’nSews enjoyed a potluck luncheon at the home of member Barb Babair. The ladies were treated to a viewing of Barb’s quilt collection, which is quite vast. They saw quilts done by Barb as well as those she purchased over the years. Many dated back to the early to mid 1900s. Each member brought a homemade dish to share as well as sharing the recipes for some of them. The Sew’nSews is a club for beginner and experienced sewers and quilters. Not only do they share fellowship as they did with this luncheon, they also serve the community and the less fortunate. They sew many items for sale and the money then earned is used to further their projects. They will be selling their handcrafted items at the Dec. 6 Community Holiday Walk at their club location at 915F Cherry Hills Dr. There will also be a free drawing for a Christmas wall hanging. Come join them and see what they are all about. They will be glad to answer questions and provide information about the club. LAWN BOWLING

Over four and a half days in early November, 48 competitors from across the United States played in 4 disciplines to try to obtain a place in the US National lawn bowling team. Six players from each of the 7 Divisions in the US (with an extra team from the Southwest) Southwest Stars, Southwest Stripes, Pacific Intermountain, Central, South Central, Northwest, Northeast and Southeast - represented these Divisions and the members for the Southeast included four Sun City Center residents. They were Chris Heller (Skip) & Cassie Krowl (Lead) in Ladies’ Pairs and Glen Baumann (Skip) and Bob Ferguson (Lead) in Men’s Pairs. The two other events were Ladies’ and Men’s Singles. Two games were played each day from Wednesday to Friday, with the last planned game on Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon, there were playoffs for the winners of Men’s and Ladies’ Singles. Many spectators stayed on and were treated to some excellent lawn bowling, as they had been throughout the week. The hospitality of Sun City Center lawn bowlers did not just extend to the greens, however, with an informal Italian dinner held on Thursday night, a Golden Bias members’ dinner at the home of SCCLBC members Brenda & Mike Perkins on Friday night and the Awards Banquet held at Renaissance on Saturday night. Many other SCCLBC members

John Donnelly Table Tennis Club Celebration

Back L to R: Martin Fosse, Carol White, Mike Marenovic and Dan Cannistra. Front: Jo Fosse, HyeyongTemlin, Linda Cannistra, Elaine Marenovic.

SCC Running Club “Runs For Life”

On September 24, 2014, 22 members of the John Donnelly Table Tennis Club plus their guests, held their annual celebration in honor of John Donnelly. John founded our club in 1980. John passed away last summer. He was 106 years young. He competed in tournaments winning gold even when he was well in his 90’s. John married when he was 95 to Marian, 25 years younger. She is standing in the front row to the left of his picture. At the age of 99, John was a guest on the Jay Leno’s nighttime live TV show. Jay Leno had a table tennis table set up and the two of them hit the ball back and forth. It ended when John smashed the ball over the net. Table tennis is a sport of a lift time and John’s memory will forever be in our hearts.

Several members of the SCC Running Club participated in the 13th annual Richards Run for Life 5K road race that was held in Ybor City on Nov.7. 100% of the proceeds from the race, which is sponsored by the Columbia Restaurant, goes to sarcoma and prostrate cancer research.

Juniors at SCC Lawn Bowling Club?

What’s this you say - “A Juniors Tournament in lawn bowling? In Sun City Center?” You heard right. Every year, the club holds a Junior/Senior Tournament and this year was no exception. Let’s get the definition of each category sorted out, shall we? A “Junior” in this case is a lawn bowler who is over 75; a Senior is one who is over 80. Yes, you read right - those are the Juniors and Seniors who participated in the recent annual Junior/Senior Singles Tournaments. The Juniors section had 4 entries and the Seniors had 5. It isn’t the age of the competitors that Howard Baker restricted the number of entries; it’s simply that Junior Winner the Singles discipline of the game is not one that everyone enjoys playing and is not played often. However, the feeling you get when bowling as a Singles player is one of great satisfaction since there is no pressure from other players on a team - you simply do your best and hope for the most points. At the end of the week, four finalists battled it out for the championships. They were (Juniors) Howard Baker and Tony Hawken and (Seniors) Richie Bozza and Ben Caudill. When “the dust had cleared” and 21 points were reached by one player in each game, the winners were (Juniors) Howard Baker and (Seniors) Ben Caudill, both pictured Ben Caudill below. Congratulations to all the competitors who Senior Winner took part and especially to the overall winners. For more information about the sport, visit our website at http:// suncitycenterlawnbowlingclub.com. Free lessons are given every month; a sign up sheet is in the Eberhardt Building located behind the lawn bowling greens.

Inaugural Tournament for SCC Lawn Bowling Club

LAWN BOWLING

The first tournament of their Winter Season was held by SCC L awn B owling Club recently, attracting 14 teams from other cities - Sarasota, Clearwater and Port Charlotte - as well as 14 of their own teams. Under traditionally sunny skies, three 12-end games were played over the course of the day and some fine bowling was enjoyed by all. At the end of play, the Sarasota team of Sandra and George Whitelaw had won 3 games with the most points and got the top prize. Teams from Sun City Center who were also in the prize money with 3 wins were Jim Byrne & Kathy Gonnella in 2nd place, Barb & Joe Mignogna in 3rd place, Brenda & Mike Perkins in 5th. Winning 2 games with high points were the teams of Nancy Spencer & Phil Lascola 6th; Ava and Jim Casper were the high one-game winners. Special thanks must be given to the numerous volunteer club members who prepared the greens prior to play, provided snacks throughout the day and to Tournament Director Tony Hawken who ran the event

Hospice Illuminated with Lights of Love

Special Holiday Decorations Will Adorn SCC Hospice House By Agnes Baker Celebrate those you cherish and come enjoy a FREE holiday event at the Sun City Center Hospice House on December 4, 2014, from 6 to 7 p.m. Lights of Love is a commemorative tree-lighting ceremony that benefits LifePath Hospice. This annual gathering is an opportunity for LifePath Hospice families and community members to gather to celebrate and remember

their loved ones in a special, unique way. Candles are lit by all attendees, musical entertainment is provided by community members, holiday songs are shared and words of comfort are delivered by LifePath Hospice staff and area spiritual leaders. The event will be held at 3723 Upper Creek Drive in Ruskin, FL 33573. For more information contact Nikki Powers, Annual Giving Director at 813.871.8141.

Agnes Baker, center, with decorators extraordinaire, Ilona Merritt and Darlene Lentis.

Hospice House adorned with Christmas Decorations

The doors of the Hospice House are adorned with wreaths inviting all who enter to see the beautiful decorations and experience the warmth of the holiday spirit. Greeting them is a seven foot tree, donated by Ilona Merritt of Sun City Center who also donated the trimmings, which included hand crafted houses, built and designed by Ilona, intermingled with poinsettias, bows and balls. Other wreaths are hung throughout but a special treat is a Christmas House on display, also built and decorated by Mrs. Merritt. In the chapel, adjacent to the lobby, an area designated for and in honor of our veterans, is a Merritt-designed house, following the patriotic theme. And, in a designated “quiet room” another decorated tree welcomes visitors seeking solitude. All of these beautiful decorations are in place so that anyone attending the “Lights of Love,” ceremony on Thursday, December 4 at the Sun City Hospice House - beginning at 6 p.m. - can tour the house and see the wonderful work Mrs. Merritt and volunteers Sally Ann Dickey and Darlene Lentis created for everyone’s enjoyment.

Volunteers also fill holiday-themed mugs with toiletries, note pads, pencils, and other items, to be given to new patients as each arrives during this season. Music from various groups, a visiting dog, events geared to the patient—all part of what the Hospice House folks and volunteers do to spread cheer and love!! About Hospice Ilona Merritt surveys her festive decorations. Hospice is a concept that predates medieval days. Between AD 300 and 500, a place was designated in the community for the weary, homeless, sick, wounded or dying to receive care, rest and comfort. That Latin term “hospes,” used to describe these havens, was interpreted to “host and guest,” implying a mutual interaction and caring. Today, Hospice represents not a specific place of care but a concept of care emphasizing palliative rather c urative, quality rat her t han quantity. The term “hospic” has nearly disappeared from use in any language. However, today, Hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process of our life journey. When there is a beginning, there is also an ending. Sally Dickey assists with the decorating project.

The News Of Freedom Plaza Submitted by Peggy Burgess, Photos by Marichris Bowles November at Freedom Plaza started on a high note—several of them, in fact, all sung beautifully by Apprentice Artists from Sarasota Opera. Eight of these talented young singers, now on the brink of operatic careers, enthralled their audience with music from opera, operetta and Broadway in theNovember 2nd concert. Proceeds from the event went to support the Sarasota Opera Apprentice Program. The entertainment momentum had little chance to wane, for November 9th saw the beginning of Military Appreciation Week 2014 with happenings nearly nonstop. Military AppreciationWeek is an annual occurrence sponsored by the Retired Officers Corporation, which is headquartered at Freedom Plaza. It brings military retirees from across the country to enjoy a week of Freedom Plaza hospitality and, not surprisingly, some of them decide to return as residents. Among other interesting events visitors are treated to a bus excursion introducing them to not only Sun City Center and environs, but to the scenic attractions of Tampa Bay Area, as well. The pleasure and excitement of Military Appreciation Week isa two-way affair, for Freedom Plaza residents enjoy making the acquaintance of these guests. Often they discover mutual military experiences, or even that they share a common hometown. Residents also take pride in showing off their luxurious residence, especially with its year-long refurbishing project nearing completion. The auditorium got its finishing touches just in time for the week’s several special events. The first was a November 11th Veteran’s Day program highlighted this year with an address by one of Freedom Plaza’s own military heroes, Dale Shatzer, Col. USMC (Ret.) As a visual focus for this program a small table set for a lone diner, and still waiting, was a poignant reminder of the military members who are missing but not forgotten.

New to Military Appreciation Week entertainment this year was a musical stage production by the Plaza Players Theatre Club. “The Attic, a Trunk and Broadway”was written by resident Diane Turcotte and featured a resident choral group assembled especially for the event. While the chorus performed the music, other residents, all appropriately costumed, simulated action or createdtableaux of the various shows involved.

11 Years in the Making: Dali / Picasso Exhibit is a Must See! By Kai Rambow First Time Two Great Artists Displayed Together The Dali Museum by itself is rated as one of the best attractions in the Tampa Bay area. Not content to stand still, the museum continues to grow, this time with a specialized exhibit depicting two great artists from the last century, Picasso and Dali. Even though there was a 23-year age difference, the artists interacted with each other over many decades. Both were great artists and eccentrics. They were inspired by the same artists, works and ideas, however, were never quite friends, never quite rivals. Dali, the younger of the two, would send postcards to Picasso. Picasso never responded, but he kept every note. We have a wonderful opportunity to learn about their complex relationship and see similarly inspired works displayed side by side. 11 Years in the Making Putting together an exhibit like this takes a lot of work and many years. Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director, explained: “There were several challenges in making this exhibition, including researching the relationship between these two artists to find the historical meetings they had, as well as elements like common references in their works.” “Another challenge was actually f inding the works that most dramatically display their similarities or differences in making a painting. Lastly, one of the largest challenges

was convincing the owners of these paintings – private parties and other museums – that the knowledge and enjoyment to be gained from this exhibition is worth their parting with their precious works for six months (St. Petersburg and then Barcelona).” Bonuses This exhibit will only be here and in Spain. (We don’t have to travel far.) Most exhibits of this caliber charge for the museum and a separate charge for the exhibit. In addition, audio guides usually require a small charge as well. The Dali Museum has been smart in creating interesting exhibits and making it worth the trip. The Picasso/Dali exhibit is included with admission. Audio guides are free. Tip: Audio guides are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you might want to plan on arriving when the museum opens. Best Time to Visit Ta ke advant age of we ekd ay mornings when the museum opens for two reasons. First, to get a free audio guide. Second, to avoid crowds. The exhibit is drawing approximately 50 percent higher attendance. If you’ve visited before, you’ll know it can be busy during normal operations. Timed-tickets are being sold for weekends to avoid overcrowding. Set aside at least two hours for this and plan a visit with friends, family and guests. Check their web site (thedali.org) to get the most up-todate information.

The Dali Museum 1 Dali Drive St. Petersburg, FL 33701 Exhibit Dates and Times Now through February 16, 2015 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. most days, (727) 823-3767 Sunday opens at 12 noon

About the Holiday Gift Fund

C. A. R. E.

Concetta was found in a container in the shelter’s parking lot in September of 2013. She is quiet, but playful when the other cats and kittens get rambunctious. She loves to nap on the bed on the lanai, watching the squirrels and birds that frequent the back yard. She’s a little standoffish at first, but will be happy to have a home to call her own. Please give her that forever home. As part of her adoption Concetta will be microchipped. She is current on her vaccinations and has been spayed. EST. DOB: September 2, 2012.

Winnie is an adult female Catahoula Leopard dog that has a lovely white coat with brindle patches. She is a little timid when meeting someone new, but warms quickly to gentle affection and treats. Occasionally she runs around like a spunky puppy playing ball, but likes it best when kissed and petted. She needs a home that can nurture her quiet disposition with love and attention. Winnie is current on vaccinations and has been spayed. As part of her adoption she will be microchipped. DOB: May 2, 2009

By: Uta Kuhn The idea of saying “THANK YOU” to our CA Office Staff and the Maintenance staff by giving them a monetary gift for the holidays was originally started by Ron Pelton way back in 1998. Henceforth this lead to a committee being formed whose members are responsible for soliciting, collecting and distributing those funds to the above-mentioned members of the staff. At this time the committee consists of three members— Chairman Margaret Vaske, Ron Pelton, and Janet McRee. In the past many formulas were used to distribute the funds collected. Chairman Margaret Vaske came on board in 2006, and prior to coming on board the following formula was used to distribute the collected funds. Supervisors get an extra $100 and the remainder of the monies collected are distributed evenly among the rest of the staff. This formula is still in effect at this time.

The Fitness Center and Library staff are not included in this gift. It appears that the HOA’s and Clubs wanted to make sure that those employees that are directly involved with these organizations were the ones who deserved this special “THANK YOU” for all the work they do to make special Club functions like FunFest, Hi Neighbor!, luncheons, etc. etc. a great success. Over the years, Margaret is happy to report that the donations to this fund have increased from about $5,800 donations to the most recent of $13,015. Having said that, Margaret and her committee are very appreciative of how the Clubs and HOA’s have responded to this effort. So, if any Clubs/HOA’s have not made your contribution to this fund yet, here is a reminder that the deadline of Dec. 17th to make your donation is quickly approaching. Please for information, or questions please contact Margaret Vaske at 633-6756.
