Not Your Average Flower Girl Interview by News of Kings Point Editor in Chief, Adam Porter It’s a beautiful day and we are basking in the glow of trees and casting glimmering rays on the splashes of vibrant colors that surround us. Anne Pigeon sits across from me, her wide-brimmed hat not quite concealing the sparkle in her sun-crinkled eyes. We are immersed in her world; and it is easy to see that, not only does # # her. Anne’s love for growing things led her to a degree in horticulture at the prestigious Farmdale X < State University of New York. It was this same love that brought her down to Florida after college, where this amazingly creative lady nearly singlehandedly developed the + % of the country’s most celebrated Gardens. It began in the mid 1980’s; Anne was just an idealistic ^% _ * she answered an ad in the ^% @_ She was subsequently hired to be the person who would bring % # proprietor of Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay. da VinciÂŽ Robot Arrives in Manatee County Manatee Memorial Hospital is the ďŹ rst in Manatee County to offer minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery using the da VinciÂŽ Surgical System robot. Developed by Intuitive Surgical, the da VinciÂŽ robot provides the look and feel of traditional “openâ€? surgery, while minimizing risk of infection by eliminating the need for a long incision, thereby speeding recovery. How Does It Work? During surgery, the surgeon makes a series of three tiny incisions (ports for instruments) in the body through which the da VinciÂŽ robotic arms are inserted. The three robotic arms are inserted through the ports. One of the arms is a tiny video camera and the other two hold surgical instruments. Sitting at a computer console located about ten feet from the operating table, the surgeon views a three-dimensional image from inside the patient’s body. From the console, the surgeon controls the robotic arms that are inside the patient. Surgeons at Manatee Memorial use the da VinciÂŽ robot to perform a variety of minimally invasive procedures:

Aston Gardens Celebrates 10 Years of Excellence, Compassion and Care Article and Photos Compiled by News of Kings Point Staff Last month the award-winning Aston Gardens celebrated ten years of working hard every day to create an environment that is “better than you could imagine senior living to be.� Four hundred plus eager partygoers packed the clubhouse to join in the excitement of a trendsetting decade of excellence. They celebrated a resort-style living environment and a handpicked team of caregivers that have dedicated their days and being “America’s Best!� The guests came from all over Sun City Center and the surrounding area. The celebrants enjoyed a festive class look at Aston Gardens’ legendary hospitality. They ] you’re at Aston Gardens, you’re family! The smiles started the moment folks stepped into the exotically decorated clubhouse and just grew wider as the day went on. Celebrants were treated to fellowship, food, fun and the music of Bobby Darin. Many who attended felt a pang of

regret when it came time to go. Not surprising in a place that works hard every day to create a lifestyle that leaves their residents thinking: “I wish I had moved here sooner.�

But, though Aston Gardens knows how to throw a great party, that’s not the only thing that keeps folks coming back to this special place. Community Alert With Deputy Rob Howdy folks, In another case of “everything old is new again� there is a “new� scam going around that is targeting folks with younger relatives up north. The “old� scam went something like this: „ # ] informs you that they have “arrested� your son or grandson. Then, another, younger-sounding person is put on the phone. Responding to whatever name give him, he will be apologetic and emphatic, because they “don’t want to stay in jail.� After the, often tearful, admission comes the request for bail @ ' ^ _ # be quickly and easily arranged via Western Union. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS! Once your money crosses the border, anyone can pick it up. Poof, your cash is gone. Just like that Now, here’s the new take on this old scam: „ # … &„ † he is working a crash involving your grandson. The kid had been driving a rental car and had not elected to get the proper insurance. He is badly injured. Adding insult to injury, you are informed that, if you do not wire $3,000 dollars, the kid will be tossed into lockup after being released from the hospital. Because most folks are inclined to help in a time of need, they quickly wire the money.

Then the “NYPD� calls back looking for more cash. Seems something has come up. That’s when most folks tend to get suspicious. Unfortunately, by then these well-meaning folks are out $3,000. Here’s the bottom line, folks: If ANYONE asks you to wire them money, stop and think twice! Call me, or your local bank, and talk to someone about it. Do not worry about how “bad� the situation on the other end of the phone seems. Government action moves at a snail’s pace. Always has, @ &

District Encourages Homeowners to “Skip a Week� This Winter Overwatering in winter encourages pests and disease The Southwest Florida Water Management District recently launched a new campaign to encourage residents who irrigate their lawns to “Skip a Week� of watering during the cooler months of December, January and February. Grass need not be watered as often during the cooler months, concludes research conductd by the University of Florida. In fact, one-half to three-quarters # @ “Over-watering in the winter can encourage pests and disease in your lawn,� said Sylvia Durell, Florida-friendly landscaping project manager. Skipping a week of watering is as easy as “off� for residents with irrigation timers. “Turn the timer to ‘off’ for the week that you want to skip, and ‘on’ for the week that you want to water,� said Durell. Here are some things you can look for to determine if your lawn

Now let’s suppose South had taken the ten of hearts with the queen, which seems the natural thing to do. In that case, declarer would probably have gone down three with normal play, losing four heart tricks, the A-K of clubs and the ace of diamonds. South rightly decided that West had at least two side entries for his twoheart bid. He also could feel reasonably sure that West had a six-card suit. This in turn meant that East’s ten of hearts was a singleton. It is true that declarer also had to find East with the queen of diamonds and either the ace or king of clubs, but this kind of assumption is one that is regularly made out of necessity by players who tend to bid their hands to the hilt.
