The News of Sun City Center

From the Desk of

President Ed Barnes The month of March will be a very busy month. We have a series of events starting with the Grand Opening of the golf cart path to Walmart which is scheduled for March 9 at 10 a.m. The Grand Opening Ceremony will be held on the Del Web East side of the cart path. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a parade across the path to Walmart. We expect that the County Commissioners as well as representatives from Senator Storm’s and Representative McKeel’s office will be in attendance. Flyers with details are posted on the bulletin boards and CA website. If you haven’t seen the new cart path, the construction is moving along very well with most of the work completed. About all that remains is putting up the signs and installing anti-car devices. This is a cart path for golf carts only – no cars!!! Everyone is invited to the Grand Opening; please come and enjoy it. I do, however, ask that you not use this cart path until after March 9. We have a Membership Meeting scheduled for March 23 where we will vote on two changes to the bylaws – the first involves requiring that not only two members of an immediate family but two members cohabitating cannot hold positions on the Board of Directors at the same time. This updates the bylaws to the realities of 2010, people choosing to live together. The second change involves moving the due date for applications for the Board from the third Wednesday in October to the first Wednesday – this will allow more opportunity for the candidates to be exposed to the news media so you can be more informed. The Board of Directors supported both of these changes at the February Board of Directors meeting. Over the course of the year we expect to have several more bylaw changes to bring them into compliance with Florida Statutes as well as to reflect changes that have occurred in our society. There was a little confusion on the date of this meeting – our annual schedule shows the date as March 24 but it has been changed to March 23. We apologize for the confusion. Please put this date on your calendar and plan to attend. March 20 is Fun Fest – we expect to have 56 club booths, 43

Flex Service to Begin in Spring

Soon, residents of southern Hillsborough County will be able to travel in a whole new way, as the HART Board approved implementation of a pilot flexible neighborhood service for Brandon and the Wimauma/Sun City Center areas. HART Flex will offer a new kind of service for people living in areas sponsor booths and 19 health fair participants. As always there will be that are difficult to serve with transit. Smaller vehicles will be able to lots to eat and lots to do – come out navigate neighborhood streets, and flexible scheduling allows passengers to see the wares of all of the clubs. I have appointed a task force headed by Director Hurwitz to continue the work started last year by Director Howie Griffin. This task force will continue to explore optional uses and the cost of those uses of the North Lakes property. This task force has a deadline to complete their work by October of this year. There will be more on this effort as we move through the year. Many of you are aware Hillsborough County is considering a proposal for a 1% increase to the sales tax to fund a series of transportation projects. This proposed increase will be voted on in the general elections in November. In order to provide our members with information on this proposal, our plan is to have a series of debates. Our plan is to have County Commissioners who are both for and against the proposal to speak on the merits and downside of the program followed From left, CA President Ed Barnes, Director and Anniversary Chair Ann by a Q&A session by a roundtable Marie Leblanc, Booth Coordinator Theresa Phillips, and John Smithyman of experts on this program. Keeping you Informed

Every year Hillsborough County presents a Neighborhood Conference with exciting learning workshops. This year the event will be held Saturday, March 27, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Hillsborough Community College, 4001 Tampa Bay Boulevard (Dale Mabry Campus across from Raymond James Stadium). The conference will feature a variety of workshops designed to help develop effective communications between neighbors, public and private resources, and how to work with governments for improving the quality of life. There will also be networking opportunities with other citizens, county departments, event

sponsors and association leaders. Samples of the workshops include: Florida Friendly Landscaping, Neighborhoods Surviving Foreclosure, Grants, Crime Watch and Code Enforcement. For a detailed look and registration information, visit www.hillsboroughcounty. org/onr. Click 2010 Neighborhood Conference in the left margin. Please read thoroughly and remember that your registration form, with a check for $12 p/p must be postmarked by March 12, 2010. Fee includes conference bag, continental breakfast, admission to three (3) workshops, access to exhibits and lunch. Anything after March 12 will be $15 p/p at the door, conference day. Hope to see you there.

From the Desk of

Director Chuck Collett As a new CA director I am excited about the position of liaison to CO-AP that President Barnes has given to me. I look forward to working with Bill O’Dell and the other members of that group. This year there are several objectives I hope to accomplish working with the group. First I hope that we can establish a means of effective communication within the HOAs so that when important issues arise we can deliver real time facts to SCC residents which will assist them to make informed decisions on matters requiring their vote. Second, as I did with the surveys my Golf Advisory Panel sent out, I hope to work with a volunteer group of HOA presidents to collect and analyze

data on the more than 100 HOAs we have in SCC. Our goal will be to see if there is cost saving information that can be shared between the associations and to explore the possibility of group purchasing to cut costs. Lastly I hope we can explore ways the CA personnel can support the HOAs and provide a resource for all of them to utilize. To further one of my objectives I have asked all HOAs to provide a copy of their current budget. So far the response has been slow, but I am certain it will improve. I want to assure all respondents that the information will be kept confidential and will be folded into a generalized report that does not identify specific HOAs in any identifiable way.

HARDSHIP ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR 2010 DUES The Hardship Assistance policy for relief of dues states that applications for hardship must be in by February 15. Since formal notification was not given, this deadline has been extended, for this year only, to March 15, 2010. Contact Judy Hill in the CA office for further information – 633-3500.

The News of Sun City Center

633-7091 You’ve reached the Men’s Club Lifeline! How may we help you?

Nellie Brock, left, and Sue Bowman confer on installation assignments for the day. These are the two voices callers hear at 633-7091. What is this thing called Lifeline, and what does it have to do with a club for men? Lifeline Medical Alert System is a product of the Philips Lifeline Corporation that uses a Personal Help Button that can be worn on a cord around your neck, or on a wristband. One touch of the Personal Help Button assures the wearer of help in about a minute! The button activates a communicator connected to your telephone line. The button is programmed with your individual medical history and the names and phone numbers of people you need called in an emergency. That is very reassuring to anyone living alone, or to anyone living with a person who has a serious physical condition such as

limited mobility, heart problem, stroke, or a history of falls. It is even more reassuring to families who worry about their loved ones living alone! When the help button is pushed, it automatically connects to a professional call center. You will hear a series of responses “Help call in progress.” The operator’s monitor displays your records and calls you by name in a loud voice that comes from your communicator. If you can talk, they will ask if you need help and you can tell them what is wrong. If you can’t talk, they will immediately call the emergency squad or 911 and ask them to respond to your home. The Lifeline operator will stay with you until help is received and the problem resolved.

This program is administered locally by the Sun City Center Men’s Club. Faxes are received every day documenting calls that were made and how they were handled. Recently a resident pushed his button and within 14 minutes he was in the hospital! Many calls can be handled by a neighbor, a friend or one of the Lifeline Volunteers. Professional operators are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! In 1990 the Lifeline Program began with 22 subscribers and a few good men. The Sun City Center Men’s Club agreed to purchase the Lifeline Communicators as part of its “Service to our Community” role, and club members volunteered to install and service them. Subscribers are asked to pay the monthly monitor fee charged by the Philips Lifeline Company. The Men’s Club now has about $400,000 invested in equipment and covers the costs of maintaining a local office here. Installation and service calls are free to the subscriber. O r ig in ally th e v o l u n t e e r program manager, Ray Anderson, personally handled orders and requests. Volunteers, called VIPs, provided installations and service calls. By the late 90’s the program had grown too much for one man to handle, so Program Manager Lew Riley convinced the Club to hire a part-time administrative assistant.

Shirley Spittle provided an office in her home and the program flourished. The VIP installing the unit became the subscriber’s personal service rep. Howard Volgenau served as program manager in 2004. The program had grown to 475 subscribers. Lou Tovey was elected Lifeline Program Manager of the Men’s Club in 2006. Realizing the program had outgrown Shirley’s office, he started looking for more space with room for a second assistant. In May 2008, the Board of Directors of the Sun City Center Community Association voted to allow the Men’s Club to use the lanai of the Information Center, 1002A Cherry Hills Drive as an office. Today there are two office managers, Sue Bowman and Nellie Brock. Forty VIPs agree to be available one day a month to provide new installations or service calls. Don Koester was recently elected as assistant program manager, and there are 815 happy customers enjoying the peace of mind afforded by their Lifeline Service. The Lifeline Medical Alert Program has definitely saved lives! Since the program started, we are proud to have enabled over 1000 of our neighbors to remain in their own homes, secure and independent! –Lou Tovey, Vice President and Lifeline Program Manager

Manatee Memorial Hospital Keeps the Beat Going Strong Surgery Can Correct Potentially Dangerous Heart Condition The mitral valve, located between the upper- and lower-left chambers of the heart, is susceptible to problems. When it doesn’t close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation. To correct this condition, surgeons at Manatee Memorial can access the mitral valve through the breastbone and repair the valve to create a tighter seal. This procedure may require a threeto five-day hospital stay. “Patients who have successful mitral valve surgery dramatically increase their life expectancy, so they’re on par with someone with a completely normal heart,” says Alessandro Golino, MD, Chief of Surgery at Manatee Alessandro Golino, MD Memorial and a cardiothoracic Trained by renowned cardiac surgery pioneer surgeon who specializes in mitral Denton Cooley, M.D. valve repair. Dr. Golino had a 97.1 percent success rate for mitral valve surgery from January 2008 through June 2009.* Nationally, the overall success rate for mitral valve repair is less than 60 percent. How Do I Know if I Have Mitral Valve Regurgitation? Mitral valve regurgitation can strike anyone at any age, but the risk does increase as you get older.

5

If you have been diagnosed with a heart murmur and you experience the following symptoms, talk to your doctor. Shortness of breath Heart palpitations Chest pain Light-headedness Dizziness Fatigue Migraine headaches

Sometimes, people who have potentially deadly mitral valve problems do not have warning symptoms. This is why regular check-ups with your family doctor or cardiologist are important. For more information about mitral valve regurgitation surgery at Manatee Memorial, please call 941.745.7204. Physicians are independent practitioners who are not employees or agents of Manatee Memorial Hospital. The hospital shall not be liable for actions or treatments provided by physicians.

Project Lifesaver: Bringing Loved Ones Home Besides The Silver Alert, there is a program called “Project Lifesaver” that has been used since 1990 in other parts of the nation and has had over 1,900 rescues with an average find time of 30 minutes using two or three officers. As a result, the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office [HCSO] has partnered with the Lojack safety net system to help locate people who wander off for whatever the reason [dementia, Alzheimer, Down’s Syndrome, etc.]. The citizens enrolled wear a transmitter around their ankle or wrist that emits an individualized tracking signal. If an enrolled client goes missing, the caregiver notifies HCSO, and a trained emergency team responds to the precise location of the missing person. Deputy Rob continues, “The team consists of up to three deputies and possibly one helicopter, all equipped with receivers that can track the transmitter. If we can get within 5 miles of the transmitter, we can triangulate and find the person.” The program, however, is not free. The initial enrollment is $99 and there is a monthly charge of $30 to cover batteries and wristband or ankle band replacement. If you or someone has a need for this program, all you have to do is call 211 from your home or cell phone. Just like you dial 911 in an emergency, you can now just dial the numbers 2-1-1 for health and human services issues. Mention Project Lifesaver and the operator at 211 Tampa Bay will provide you all of the information you need. According to Deputy Rob, some who need the service or the caregiver are either denying the need or say, “He doesn’t need it quite yet.” There are those who think that the slender white band that would keep their loved one safe is a band of shame. This is a generation of proud people who don’t ask for help even when the need is there. Look around your Club houses and the mall and see tottering people too proud to use a walker or a cane. We need to reach out to each other. I spoke to Martha Finley [head of Sun City Center Security], Bill Reddington [head of Kings Point Security] and Brenda Wiseman, [Safety Program Coordinator for Kings Point]. Brenda has info at the security gate for 211. Martha has a brochure for Lojack. There is help if the program is too expensive. The Sheriff’s office has the funds to help with the cost of Project Lifesaver. Call your Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office or 2-1-1 for information if your loved one needs this service. –Dora Murray

A Little Advice from Consumer Affairs ... New Resident Response Forms from Consumer Affairs By Susan Muise The Consumer Affairs Committee has put together an easy-to-use form so that as residents we can rate a company that has done work for us and let other residents know how we feel about that company. This form is available to print out online at suncitycenter.org or to pick up at the CA Office. There are some simple questions to help make it easier for you to complete your thoughts and a space to write in your comments whether they are good, bad or just adequate. Neither the Consumer Affairs Committee nor any of the CA employees can rate any of the companies listed with us, but you can. Even if work was done in the past, and you have something to say, please fill out one of our forms. We can also keep comments on companies that are not registered with us so folks can look at them as well. It’s the best way we can think of to let our friends and neighbors know about our experiences. Just imagine how easy it would be to research a company if everyone jotted their thoughts down. Please let us know yours. The Consumer Affairs Register is available online at suncitycenter.org -click on Consumer Affairs on the left side of the page; -click on Directory Listing of Registered Contractors and Vendors on the left side of the page.

We Want to Know!!!

(Answers to frequently asked questions at the CA) By Susan Muise Is there anything special I should do to prepare for hurricanes before I go up north for the summer? Since our “snowbirds” will be leaving us soon, we thought it would be advantageous to remind them what can happen here while they are gone. As you sit up North and watch the TV and wonder what’s happening down here when a hurricane is predicted, we are busy putting away all our yard ornaments and anything that could possibly become wind-born during a storm. We are turning off our water so that it will not pollute our property in the event that the county turns the water off completely and back on after the storm. We are making sure that electrical appliances are unplugged, and that our water heaters are turned off at the electrical panel box, so there is not a power surge when electricity is turned back on. We hope that you have taken care of these little jobs before you leave or have found a friend to make sure your house is “hurricane prepared” when a storm is on the way. We hope that you have left your key with a friend or neighbor and that the Security Patrol knows where it is, too. We hope your friend or neighbor or whoever is keeping an eye on your house knows how to get a hold of you in the event of a problem. We get many calls here at the office asking for phone numbers because there is a problem in the house and no one knows how to reach the owner. And most often we do not have that information either. Please let someone know where you will be if you’re going away! If we ever do have that “big one” and you find that you can’t reach anyone here by telephone, our Amateur Radio Club has a website where you can get the latest news of conditions here in Sun City Center. You can also send messages to your friends or family still here. That website is http:// www.sccarc.info, and we hope that you never have to use it. Our Community Information Center has a great list of other things you should do to prepare your home if you are leaving for several months. Drop by and see them before you go. Their address is 1002 Cherry Hills Drive, and they are there weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Club Renaissance Changes

Time Was... The month of March has seen many events that have helped shape and secure the role of Sun City Center as a premier retirement community. Here’s an example: The big headline story in the Views newsletter of March 1967 showed conquistadores advancing across Swan Lake in full battle array holding spears and banners demanding the keys to Sun City Center. The report mentions the heroic fight put up by the CA President Reginald Smith before being thrown in the lake, fully clothed. Following a party with entertainment by the Spanish Club in the Town Hall’s Little Theater, Smith gave up the “key to the city” (?!). This was an annual event for several years in the late 1960s. –John Bowker

Tax Time!

Sun City Center residents who have not yet filed income tax returns can still receive free tax help from trained AARP volunteers. Volunteers will be at the United Community Church, 1501 La Jolla Ave. until April 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments may be made by calling 633-2375. Shut ins can call Don Frederick at 634-4200 for help. Computer users can log on to IRS.gov.com for help and to download forms Be sure to bring relevant information and identification when visiting the help centers. Xerox is sponsoring a program called “Let’s Say Thanks to our Troops.” If you go to the following website www.LetsSayThanKs.com, you can pick out a thank you card, personalize it, and Xerox will print it and mail it to a soldier currently serving in Iraq. How simple, and amazing. It only takes a minute and think of how much these cards will be appreciated. I don’t think we can ever thank our military men and women enough for what they do for us.

The Renaissance Club on the south side has opened up dining only and social memberships to any household in the 33573 zip code. The dining only membership cost is $500 and the social membership cost is $1,995 plus tax for the 2010 calendar year. There is no sign-up deadline, but household memberships run on a calendar year basis. Originally the Renaissance Club, which is five years old and 40 thousand square feet, was a private club for Renaissance area residents. A social membership is mandatory for those households, which will eventually total 853. There was also a “grey area” of optional social membership extended to other households adjacent to the golf course. In 2009, there were 186 of these social memberships; and, according to John Luper, Regional General Manager of Amenities for WCI Communities, 104 of those have renewed so far for 2010. When the Golf & Racquet Club closed in 2009, the $500 dining only option was created especially for those members. In September and October of 2009, the Renaissance Area Presidents (RAP) approached John Luper with their dissatisfaction with the dining only membership and did not want to see it continued in 2010. However, on a year-to-year basis until Renaissance was fully developed, RAP supported extending social memberships to other Community Association (CA) members where everybody paid the same amount. According to John, “the Renaissance area is only 60 to 65 percent developed, and with the construction on new homes halted, the Club is not operating close to its design to accommodate 1,200 households.” However, all the fixed costs and a majority of the variable costs are the same whether there are 1,200 households or 900 households. “We want to keep increases to a minimum and have a Club that is viable and attractive and encourages people to want to live here.” This is a successful Club, and until building picks back up, this is an interim program to keep the Club going. “What is good for one person is good for everybody.” There are a lot of stakeholders, and nobody benefits from letting the Club decline. WCI stated they are committed to maintain a positive experience. Anybody interested in a membership can call the Club at 813-6331015 Ext. 3.

Caloosa G&CC Fun Night Caloosa Golf and Country Club enjoyed a “Good Time Nite” recently with 200 in attendance. The evening began with a catered Italian meal served by Danny Boys. A Talent Show followed with eight creative acts ranging from a 23-piece band to a skit entitled “Second Week of Deer Camp.” Pictured are Caloosa members (l to r) Linn Hanson, Ruth Ann Phelan & June Kendall dancing to “Ride Sally Ride.”

The fun evening ended with a Men’s Bake Off where 30 male members made delicious desserts enjoyed by the audience. The 1st prize winner was Bill Winklemann’s gourmet trifle. Helping Sun City Center and WCI keep the golf courses open

WCI, the developer, and Sun City Center residents have been faced with having the Sandpiper Golf Course closed due to decreased membership in and play on this beautiful golf course. Since WCI, with the co-operation of the Sun City Center Community Association, opened up this course to public play in an attempt to improve the revenue stream, the Hogans Golf Club has been supporting the effort by playing the course as often as possible. The picture above shows over half the 65 Hogans’ members lined up to play on Saturday, 1/23/10. The Hogans Golf Club was formed to provide golfers who did not have membership in the WCI courses an opportunity to play all the area public courses in a mixed league of golfers of all skill levels. Reservations are required to play with the Hogans. Contact ArtSwallow@aol.com or visit http://hogans-golf.com/

Swing Into Spring

The News of Sun City Center

Fitness Corner MACHINE OF THE MONTH Lower Back Extension

Riley, Bea Bohm, Carolyn Pate , Barbara D’Entremont, Judy Quitsch. Back: Mary Blose, Marion Wisner, Deanna Pachler, Verlee Clinefelter, Lorraine Lowell, Susan Muise. What an appropriate title for the once-a-year show presented by Sun City Center’s synchronized swim team - the Swim Dancers. This year’s show will be presented on March 13th, one week prior to the official start of spring. The selections will be either music representative of spring thoughts (flowers, weather) or selections from the musical “swing” genre. The Swim Dancers are delighted to have an added dimension to this year’s performance - young swimmers from Largo - the Suncoast WaterWorks. This team is bringing a group of girls aged 11 and 12, as well as a group aged 18 and 19. They will be featured doing synchro numbers to music indicative of their ages. This Largo-based team have been considering entering into the national synchronized swimming competition and we are pleased that they will take time out to travel here for our show. The “Swing Into Spring” show will be presented one time only - at 2 p.m. on March 13th in the Lap Pool of the North complex. Tickets are $2 and available from Swim Dance members or at the ticket kiosk during the week prior to the show.

Lawn Bowling Very Popular Many of you will have seen the Lawn Bowlers dressed in white playing their sport against visiting teams from other clubs and playing informal games between members. If you stopped by to watch, you are sure to have been impressed with the amount of enjoyment and the camaraderie between the Lawn Bowlers. Most days spectators stop and ask questions about the sport. Many people who have moved to Florida have never seen or even heard of it before. The game is played in most places in the world that have a British connection such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and of course Canada and the UK. Great numbers of Canadian and British snow birds come to Florida to enjoy the warm winter months and to Lawn Bowl. Lawn Bowling is played throughout America; however the number clubs is small and scattered. In Florida, there are two Clubs in Sarasota, one in Lakeland, one in Clearwater, and two here - Sun City Center and Kings Point. There are also several Clubs within 90 minutes drive of Sun City Center. So what is the game about? Its quite simple, all you have to do is to aim your bowl so that is arrives

as close to the jack (a small white ball) as possible. If your opponents bowl is closer, you are permitted to knock it out of the way with your bowl. The winner is the team that finished closest to the jack the most times. What fun! It might sound easy, but give it a try. For a start your bowls are slightly heavier in one side than the other, so if you bowl it straight down the Green it will swerve to the left or the right, so you have to compensate. Then there is the wind to contend with - interfering with the path of the bowl, and also trying not to hit the other bowls on the Green. Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club holds the very popular instruction classes every month; they are free and residents of Sun City Center including Kings Point are welcome to enroll. The sign up sheet is in the locker room in the Eberhard Building (Lawn Bowling Clubhouse) and the next class is March 15 – 19th. These classes are run by our qualified instructor Gretchen Meixner and her helpers. They have proved to be very successful with men and women who had never bowled before joining the club and soon becoming accomplished lawn bowlers. –David Burbery

Many of us experience achy, stiff lower backs from a variety of causes including poor posture and excessive body weight. The Low Back Extension Machine (blue, #10) will improve the strength and flexibility of the lower back. Utilize this machine as follows: 1. Place the pin in the proper position for the desired resistance. 2. Adjust the back roller pad to a comfortable position on the upper back and place your feet on the foot rests. 3. Hips should be in line with the pivot point of the roller pad. 4. Cross arms across your chest. 5. Smoothly extend backward as far as possible. Then return slowly to the starting position. 12 to 15 repetitions are recommended. Remember to complement this exercise with abdominal crunches. Front: Ginny Williams, Mary Jane Bridges, Anne Decker, Rosemary Collins- Strong abdominals supply added support to the lower back.
