COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION SCHEDULE

Back row, L-R: Commissioners Ken Hagan, Al Higginbotham, Sandra Murman, Mark Sharpe, Les Miller, Kevin Beckner and Victor Crist. Front row: CA Directors Howie Griffin, Al Alderman, Mike Killian, David Floyd, Ed Barnes (with wife Nancy), Jane Keegan, Sam Sudman and Neil Rothfeld.

By John Bowker December 4, 2013, was truly a remarkable day for Sun City Center and, of most importance, a day of recognition for the man who has led our community through some complex but exciting times. Edmund Barnes will be retiring from our Board of Directors on January 2, 2014. He has served as president of the Community Association since

HAVE YOU RECEIVED YOUR 2014 CA DUES BILL? Residents of Sun City Center were to receive their bills in the mail by December 20 for the 2014 Community Association dues we approved in our vote on Dec. 4. The amount is $275 per member payable to Sun City Center Community Assoc., Inc. and is due by January 31, 2014. But wait! Things are different this year. (1) You may NOT pay your dues at the CA Office. Please do not try to cajole the receptionist or other office staff personnel into taking your envelope. They have instructions, based on recommendations from the auditors, not to help in the processing of the dues. (In effect, the people who are receiving the money should not be the ones counting the money. Makes sense.) (2) The only ways to pay your dues are to mail your check, and the coupon you received in this week’s mail from the BB&T Bank to: Sun City Center Community Assoc. Inc. P.O. Box 628207 Orlando, FL 32862-8207 OR take your payment to the local BB& T Bank (next to Taco Bell.) And please remember to enclose that coupon with your payment, so you will be properly credited.

2009 and it was so rewarding for all of us gathered in the Chambers of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners on December 4 to hear the ringing tribute read into the record about his accomplishments and to have each commissioner rise to shake Ed’s hand as he was presented the Certificate shown on page 5. Following the meeting, Ed Barnes commented, “An

award like this is not the result of one person, it takes a team effort, and key to that team effort is our Executive Assistant Carol Donner, who is the continuity of the Board of Directors and the person we go to for Board history. Without Carol, there would be many false starts and miscues; she is the behind the scenes coordinator that ensures all of the bits and pieces of a project come together at the right time.”

(3) If you have your regular first class mail sent to an address outside of Sun City Center, you will want to make arrangements to get that mailing from the BB&T Bank forwarded back to you here so you can make payment by the end of

January. Remember that you must have that coupon they are mailing to you to make your payment. Envelopes are available at the CA Office. See below BB&T’s apology for not including the envelopes.

To make your payment you can bring your coupon and check to a local BB&T financial center or you may use your own envelope and mail the coupon and check to: BB&T Association Services P.O. “Let’s Talk Trash”

By Sam Sudman Board of Directors, Government Affairs Liaison

President’s Report By Ed Barnes

should take the responsibility for the maintenance of the medians on both North and South Pebble Beach Blvd. The members of the Task Force unanimously agreed that this option is the only viable option to be taken to ensure the future maintenance of the medians on Pebble Beach Boulevard to meet the community’s needs. Allowing the medians to fall under county maintenance was not a viable option for the future of our community. Having the CA accept this maintenance responsibility is in the best interest of Sun City Center. Accepting this maintenance tasking requires no change to Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws; it is simply a matter of budgeting for the cost in the Operating Budget. I anticipate members will see little impact on membership dues as a result of this specific action. Break-In at the CA Office The mystery of the break-in at the CA Office and the Atrium has finally been solved. It seems that a fire alarm went off on the Central Campus about 12:30 a.m. and the Hillsborough County Fire Department responded to the alarm. They couldn’t tell specifically which building had the alarm so they went to the CA office first. When they couldn’t get in the building to check out the alarm, they broke the lock on the back door. They discovered there was no fire so they closed the door and fastened it with some screws to secure the door. They then went to the Atrium where they could hear the alarm – that building was also locked so they broke the lock on the Florida Room back door, went in and secured the fire alarm and fixed the back door. The Fire Department returned to the Fire Station and wrote in their log to notify the CA the next day that they had been on campus and broke the two doors. The day shift never communicated the false alarm to us. So once again a perceived problem is a matter of communication!

The new automated trash and recycling-collection program in Sun City Center (SCCCA and KP) is just around the corner. During the week of January 6, 2014, two new 35-gallon roll carts - a GRAY cart for garbage and a BLUE cart for recyclables - with instructions for use, will be delivered to your address. For those who do not want to keep old garbage cans and recycling bins for alternative use, they will be collected on Saturday during the month of January. Trash cans must be clearly marked for disposal. The first trash and recyclables collection in the new containers begins Wednesday, January 15. Remember, everything must be in the new roll carts or it will not be picked up. Your current trash cans and recycling bins will not be emptied when the new program starts except you can continue to use the old bins for yard waste. The transition to a new program has been a massive undertaking. To streamline the transition as much as possible, initially, homes in Sun City Center and Kings Point will receive the 35-gallon carts. For many in SCC, storage space is a serious issue. Consider sharing a set of carts between two or even three neighbors. This is particularly relevant for the condo associations off of Rickenbacker and homes on S. Pebble Beach Blvd, opposite the Community Hall where the carts must be rolled down to the street. The actual footprint of the 35-gallon roll cart is closer to the size of a traditional garbage can than either the 65-gallon or 95-gallon cart sizes. Cart sizes and dimensions are shown below. Recognizing that some See Barnes on page 5 members may want or actually require more than the 35-gallon

Long Range Plan We made a lot of progress in 2013, particularly in regard to our Central Campus enhancement program. The Long Range Plan for improving the Atrium parking, building a new Info Center, expanding the library and constructing a new Multi-Purpose building are moving along right on schedule. Final construction drawings are pretty much complete and all of the necessary county permits are being issued. Next year you will see lots of construction activity all over the campus. Campus Improvement Program The Campus improvement program also made great strides this year with a new roof on the Atrium, buildings being refreshed with a new paint job, construction of the Pineapple Plaza, overhaul of the Atrium courtyard and stuccoing of the brick columns are some of the achievements in refreshing the Central Campus. We will continue with these efforts in 2014. Florida Friendly Medians The Florida Friendly conversion of the two medians across from the CA Office will actually become a reality. The county has approved the design and all of the funding streams are in place. We plan to start the sod removal and ordering the plants in early January with a completion date in mid-January. I would like to thank the following HOA’s/POA’s/Co-OP’s for assisting with this effort – Egret Pointe POA, Dante HOA, Caloosa Lakes POA, Churchill CO-OP, Lakefront SCC POA, Skyview POA, South Lake Association, Osprey Place HOA, and South Lake POA. Pebble Beach Medians At a Special Board Meeting on December 18 the Board of Directors passed a motion to accept the maintenance responsibility for the Pebble Beach Medians. This will be a time-phased transition starting in 2015 and completing in 2017. The Pebble Beach Maintenance Task Force did a superb job of taking a very difficult task and identifying all of the possible alternatives. The Task Force presented a final report to the CA Board in November 2013. Their conclusion was that the CA Board

capacity, residents may contact the County from January 15- March 15 to exchange either or both of the 35-gallon carts for one of the larger sizes at 272-5680, and press 1 for Solid Waste. We ask that you give the 35-gallon cart a chance before calling to exchange it/them. You may just find that the smaller size meets your needs for most of the year. There is no charge for this one-time exchange, but if you decide later that you actually did not need the larger size and want the smaller roll cart back, there will be a $30 charge. Collection days for everyone in SCC will be: garbage collection on Wednesday and Saturday, and recycling collection on Wednesday. The yard waste collection day was already changed to Saturday as of September 30. The new carts should be placed three feet apart, NOT on the sidewalk, but IN the STREET, alongside the curb. Yard waste will continue to be collected manually at curbside, in containers provided by you, or in bundles and/or bags. Tree limbs and hedge clippings should not be more than 4 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter. Also, yard waste volumes cannot exceed two cubic yards or 50 pounds. The County’s 2014 Solid Waste rates reflect an $8.42 reduction in the total annual assessments. Cart size does not affect what you pay for the assessments. Finally, and please mark this on your calendar now, Hillsborough County will be conducting a Town Hall Meeting on January 7, 2014 at Community Hall at 7 p.m. Representatives from Public Utilities will bring us up to date on the new program and answer your questions.

Barnes from page 3. Golf Cart Safety Not too long ago we had a CA member killed in a golf cart when he allegedly ran a stop sign. In the past week I have observed, on at least two occasions, golf carts taking risky paths that came dangerously close to cars. Take my word for it, golf carts are no match for cars and the golf cart will lose every time. Please drive cautiously and defensively. Secondly, driving golf carts after dark – the Hillsborough County Code is very specific about not driving golf carts after dark. With rolling the clocks back an hour, I have noticed an increasing number of carts being operated after dark. Golf carts are even more dangerous after dark. Driving your carts after dark endangers our exemption for operating golf carts on Hillsborough County Roads – loss of that exemption would be a disaster for all SCC residents. The Hillsborough County Sheriff will be watching very closely for golf carts operated after dark – be cautious and avoid a $250 ticket.

The News of Sun City Center

Last Hurrah As most of you know, this will be my last column for the News of Sun City Center. On January 2, 2014 I will reach the end of my second term. In the past five years, I have been very fortunate to have some excellent Boards to work with, a very good Community Manager and a terrific Community Association staff. This job cannot be done by one person. This job takes the combined effort of all three of those elements. My thanks to the past and present Boards of Directors; to Lyn, the CA staff, the clubs and HOA/COAs for all of your support and help over the last five years. There are still many things that need to be done to refresh the Central Campus – I feel that your Community Association will be in very capable hands with the new Board and new slate of officers. My thanks also to all of the CA members for your support and understanding over the past five years. I am convinced that Sun City Center is a great place to live. After January 2, I intend to do what I set out to do in 2003 when I moved here and that is to retire. Many thanks to the membership for giving me the opportunity to be your leader.

What’s New at the Library?

President Ed Barnes shares the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners Certificate of Commendation with his Executive Assistant Carol Donner.

FLORIDA-FRIENDLY GARDENING WORKSHOP Tuesday, January 28, 2014 - 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Community Hall, Sun City Center Remember January 28! This will be a Workshop for those who want to know more about what Florida gardening is all about. The workshop is free, and open to Sun City Center, Kings Point and surroundings areas. We are all in the same situation with sandy soil and weather extremes. Hillsborough County Extension will be presenting the program with topics on winter gardening, soil/amendments, low maintenance, rain barrels and more. Local vendors will be available with displays to promote their businesses, and answer questions. Florida friendly and native plants may be for sale as well. The Elegant Gardeners will have coffee, water and refreshments for sale. Registration will be necessary to have enough handouts for everyone. Beginning in January, you can register at the Kiosk in the Atrium or go to www.evenbrite.com. Tell your neighbors and friends. We look forward to this much needed gardening information for our community and neighbors. You all come!!

The library’s annual book sale will be held in the Atrium Building Caper Room on Saturday, February 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, February 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be many bargains with most fiction priced at one or two dollars for hardcover books; paperbacks for twenty to seventyfive cents; “coffee table books” and cook books in beautiful condition at bargain prices! There will also be jigsaw puzzles, VHS tapes, DVDs, and audiobooks. Early birds get the best selection! The Sun City Center Campaign A g a i n s t Hu m a n Tr a f f i c k i n g (SCCCAHT) will be presenting “The Abduction of Eden” in the Atrium Building Florida Room on Friday, January 10, from 1-3 p.m. The film shows how easily a young girl can be kidnapped when a young woman’s night out with friends turns into a nightmare when she is abducted and imprisoned in Vegas as a sex slave. Renamed Eden, she learns she must build the trust of her captors (Matt O’Leary) and sacrifice everything in a desperate plea to survive. The purpose of showing the film is to draw attention to the huge problem that human trafficking has become. The library is working with SCCCAHT to provide follow-up information. The film is free. A generous donation has given

the library the funds to purchase books on the SCCCAHT’s reading list for those who wish to know more information about this heinous form of slavery. Some of the titles are: A crime so monstrous : faceto-face with modern-day slavery, E. Benjamin Skinner; The Natashas: inside the new global sex trade, Victor Malarek; The slave next door: human trafficking and slavery in America today, Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter; Sold, Patricia McCormick; Somebody’s daughter: the hidden story of America’s prostituted children and the battle to save them, Julian Sher. The library already owns A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard and we are in the process of ordering some of the other titles on the reading list. Fans are asking about Season Four of Downton Abbey. It should be available in late January. Meanwhile, library patrons are watching some of our other wonderful British series on DVD. December’s new DVD arrivals include: The Wolverine, RED 2, Margin Call, Safe, The Lone Ranger and Family. For those of you just returning for the season, remember that you can look up, reser ve and renew items online at webopac. infovisionsoftware.com/suncity. Happy New Year! Elaine Birkinshaw

By Sam Sudman Government Affairs Liaison, Board of Directors Well, the results are in. Riding the bus seems to be successful. For November and December, 220 passes were purchased. Hart has agreed to extend this program into early 2014 to see if its popularity continues beyond the holiday-shopping period. The CA will continue to monitor usage. If the demand remains, we will work with HART on a long-term agreement. Drive your car or golf cart to the parking lot on N. Pebble Beach, park it, get on the bus and relax. Once your trip to Brandon, or anywhere else that HART travels, is completed, get back on the bus (no additional cost) and return to SCC, to where you climbed aboard the bus. This applies to HART Flex as well as the regular buses. One-day passes are 50% off the regular price, $1. The CA purchases the passes and sells them to you at our cost, as a service for you. You may buy as many as you want. There is no refund for unused passes but you can carry them over to future months. Remember, bring your money and your CA ID card to the CA office and purchase the passes, cash only. Questions? Call the CA, 633-3500.

By Phyllis Hodges To say that Grand Marshal Charley Belcher was impressed with the creativity SCC residents showed to reflect the 2013 Golf Car Parade’s theme (Sights and Sounds of the Season) is an understatement. “Some of these entries should go through an x-ray to make sure there is a golf cart under there,” he commented following the parade. The three-time Emmy award-winning feature reporter for Fox TV also said, “If the world could have the sense of community that you have here, it would be a better world.” The parade attracted 131 entries. Minto Communities donated $6,000 for prize money. All photos by Phyllis Hodges unless otherwise Ron and Linda Ringenback took home $1,300 for noted. their entry in the Individual category: $800 for 1st Place Best Decorated and an additional $500 for Best in Show, chosen from the winners of the three categories.

It was a beautiful December day and the parade route was lined with hundreds of spectators. Chris and Vickie Robinson, on behalf of the Portsmouth Condo Association, Kings Point, accepted the $800 award for 1st Place in the Groups category.

Holiday Walk/Breakfast Attracts Visitors Galore provide holiday music, contribute to the festive mood and the CA maintenance team does a great job in setting up and tearing down the rooms. Our heartfelt thanks to all.” The miniature house raffled was won by Juanita Cunningham. 50-50 winners were Frank Burns ($200), Carol Burns ($120), and Mona Lockwood ($80). SCC CA Club Liaison and Director Jane Keegan said that the clubs open for the morning reported a continuous stream of visitors. They were greeted with warm smiles and a variety of edible Christmas goodies. “Sales of the handmade items—many one of a kind--were very good,” she said. Clubs retain the proceeds from products to maintain club activities.

By Phyllis Hodges The Sun City Center Holiday Walk/Breakfast was again a big success. It provided a holiday atmosphere on a beautiful Saturday morning where SCC residents and visitors could enjoy breakfast and/or browse the clubrooms with friends and family. Sam and Joanne Sudman, who organized the breakfast, said that their 120 volunteers served 824 breakfasts. That’s up about 200 from last year. They had planned for 750. “We have said it before but it bears repeating: We marvel at how many volunteers step up to make the community breakfasts a HUGE success, working fluidly and keeping a smile on their faces. A NEW THEATER– A NEW BEGINNING

By Director Chuck Collett Recently I went to see another production put on by the Performing Arts Club (PAC) at the Rollins Theater. Even though I’m 6’2” the gentleman in front of me was even taller and I had a really hard time seeing the show. Imagine the plight of the small person sitting in the seat behind me! She probably missed half the show. At one of the performances it was a rainy night. During the intermission, folks either had to stay in the theater or brave the elements if they had to use the restroom facilities in the Atrium. Nearly everyone had to stand because there is no way for anyone from an inside seat to get out of the row, since the (uncomfortable) seats are so close together. Performers have to sometimes stand sideways because the stage is so small. The above are just a few of the inadequacies of the current theater. A fact that has not gone unnoticed by the members because, in our community survey, a majority of you said you would like to see the theater improved. Unfortunately, the existing theater cannot be “improved” to address all of these deficiencies and many others. But there is a solution – we can build a new theater. The old theater can then be remodeled to either create a new “Florida” room or additional club rooms. Each year over 15,000 people use the theater. They come to see productions by the PAC, watch the Monday movies or listen to the Front Porch Pickers. They attend movies

The News of Sun City Center

shown by the Irish Connection, Art Club presentations, or performances at Fun Fest and at Wall to Wall Christmas. The list goes on. Recently the PAC and the Pelican Players have formed a strategic alliance. There is no doubt but that the Pelican Players will be doing some productions at the theater, further adding to the number of opportunities to enjoy an evening of entertainment right here in our own community. With a new theater, productions will be artistically better with a proper stage and the ability to create more scenery. Larger casts will have room to move about on stage. Acoustics and lighting will be improved. Seating will be ramped up from front to back so every one can see. Comfortable theater seats will be extra wide and the room between rows will be expanded so folks can get by without everyone having to get up. Ample restroom facilities will be located in the building and the lobby will allow folks to mingle indoors before the show and at intermission. For many years, Sun City Center had a lecture series at the theater that was regularly attended. Wouldn’t it be great to restart that effort in a theater with proper audiovisual equipment and a comfortable setting? With a new theater, we could attract more small professional acts to perform, further adding to the opportunity for our residents to see quality entertainment without having to leave the community. Can there be any doubt that a new theater would improve our quality of life and the value of our properties? There are ways to get a new theater built now instead of waiting 7-10 years, and we should discuss the options. Let the Board know how you feel.

The Hope Fund Holds Holiday Parties for Deserving Children

Those children who attend The Hope Fund’s after- school programs at Bethune Park in Wimauma were treated to their annual holiday parties on Wednesday, December 11, at the Park. The children again received much appreciated gifts from the women of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Sun City Center along with goodies from their respective tutors, mentors, and readers. Refreshments were served and games were played. Santa (John Cheeseman) arrived right on schedule, much to the delight of the children. A wonderful time was had by all. The Hope Fund, an all volunteer organization, conducts the afterschool programs at Bethune Park for at-risk children who come there while their parents work. The kids enjoy a safe, nurturing environment while at the Park. Tutors help them with their homework; mentors help them resolve problems; readers help them improve reading skills. There are also those who conduct a running program. Sex and drug education classes are held for older children. There are two artists who

work with the children on creative activities. The kids work with clay, paint, and many materials to create imaginative projects. New this year, volunteers have stepped forward to teach the youngsters how to play chess and how to do woodworking. All these things expand their world and contribute to a good start in life for children who might otherwise be home alone after school. Financial help is provided by The Hope Fund for those families who cannot afford the full cost of attending the after-school programs. Funds are raised by tax-deductible donations, grants, and a semi-annual fundraiser called Breakfast and Bingo. The next B&B will be held in April, 2014. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation; if you would like to volunteer one hour a week to work with children; if you want to share a special talent with the kids, or if you want to find out more about The Hope Fund, call Carla Miles at 634-4268, or check out www.thehope-fund.org. —Robi Jackson

We are here even on those special days when most people are at home or visiting with family and friends. No one complains, it’s just what we do. As a matter of fact, year to date, we have responded to your emergency needs over 6,000 times. Special thanks go out to the Thanksgiving Day crew. They truly symbolize our motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” —Jan Huber

Cathy and Mike Lauro recently spent a week in one of their favorite places, Carmel, California, where they stayed at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Dee Kelly, treasurer of the Sew ‘n Sews, presented Noreen Schramm, chief of the Emergency Squad, with a generous donation in support of the Squad’s activities. Chief Schramm expressed her appreciation on behalf of the Squad. “Community support,” she said, “is the only funding the Squad receives and we are deeply grateful for every contribution.” —Jan Huber

Featured Volunteer/SCC Emergency Squad

Rick Frabotta has been selected as the Sun City Center Featured Volunteer of the month. Rick was born and raised in Elyria, Ohio. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam war years. He was graduated from the University of Dayton with a BA in Psychology. Rick and wife Connie moved to Sun City Center in 1999. He joined the Squad almost ten years ago. His father had had an accident at home and Rick experienced the efficiency of the Squad first hand. He was so impressed with the crew and how they responded to that situation, that he felt he needed to be a part of this amazing organization. His Squad duties have taken him from Team Captain and Assistant Captain with Team 3 to serving as an EMR/Driver. Rick has also served on the Grievance Committee, the Nominating Committee, and most rewarding, the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team. Rick noted that volunteering as a Squad member has given him opportunity on several fronts ... he is continually learning, making new friends, and enjoying the rewards of serving our community.

Machines Whir, Fingers Fly at Sew ‘n Sews The Sew ‘n Sews are serious about their craft, but they develop camaraderie while working and do put away their needles and machines from time to time for social gatherings and excursions, such as the Quilt Expo in Lakeland in April. “Periodically, we offer sewing or quilting lessons, our members love to sew and are always willing to help each other.” No doubt there is a lot of talent represented by the 179-member roster, so there is always somebody who can help with a difficult project. If someone comes in wanting a specific item, they are referred to the members who will take such orders. For club information, contact Barbara Paugh at 633-5458.

Knitted hats for cancer patients is an ongoing Sew ‘n Sews project. This one is a specialty item; the yarn required is too difficult for most of the members to handle, but Linda Bowker rose to the challenge.

PHOTOS BY PHYLLIS HODGES

By Phyllis Hodges Visit the Sew ‘n Sews clubroom sometime. It is tucked in the southeast corner of the Arts and Crafts Center on Cherry Hills Drive. You’ll likely hear the whirring of sewing machines that line the wall or observe members working on the large tables that fill the room. You will also see completed creations for sale. The clubroom is manned five days a week and members are free to drop in five days a week to work on projects, either for philanthropic projects, to sell as a fundraiser or for their personal use. President B arbara Paug h has been part of the club for eight years. This will be her fourth year as president with some breaks between stints. She’s proud that the club performs some valuable service by creating such items as hats for cancer patients and clothing, duffle bags, etc. for children. A current project involves a commitment of 50-60 quilts for A Kids Place—a 60-bed, temporary-housing facility in Brandon for abused, neglected or abandoned children. Barbara said that many of the items made for raising funds stem from member creativity and ideas. They saw a need for something and filled it. The microwave bowl holders and baked potato bags, for example, are best sellers for the club.

Preparing displays in the clubroom are (L to R) Barbara Paugh, President, Beth Clark, Linda Nolder, Angie Martino and Myra Vance. The club sells its creations to individuals who visit the clubroom and at CA events such as Holiday Walk and FunFest.

(L to R) Myra Vance and Jan Ring are the primary quilters in the group. When Myra first heard about the quilt project for A Kids Place, she gathered up her scraps for this quilt. She estimates that it took about 40 hours.

Security Patrol Names December’s Volunteers of the Month

Meet Dick and Elaine Gibbs ... what a twosome!

By Agnes Baker Both natives of Michigan, Dick attended college at Houghton Engineering and went on to own three business es with Elaine tending the books while being a “home-mom.” They have two sons, Wayne (Danielle) and Dan (Amy) (with one son Rick, deceased) and daughter Kathyrn (James Austin), three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Sun City Center became their new community in 1995 and, as soon as they were settled into their “final” home, the Gibbs became very busy, utilizing time and talents to work with many groups. They did take time off to fulfill a dream and love for traveling by touring over 33 countries including Australia/New Zealand; Austria/Germany; France, China, Greece, Turkey, Rome,(three times!) plus the entire United States! Additionally, Elaine went to the Holy Land and saw many of the scenes we can only read about in the Bible. Two back surgeries and a bout with breast cancer slowed her down - but not out ... A member of the Prince of Peace church, Elaine has been an Outreach Minister for seven years and, in that capacity, visits hospitals, assisted living facilities, and homes, to offer solace to those in need. She is studying to be a Franciscan and is an office angel doing whatever

is needed in the church office. She was a member of the Security Patrol for 11 years and three years on the Emergency Squad. Elaine is a member of the Interfaith Council, a very unique group made up of representatives from all churches in our area and responsible for allocating monies received through the Nearly New Shop. Elaine is the treasurer; she buys all supplies and counts and then deposits the proceeds from the shop. Dick also served on the Security Patrol; however, his major volunteer work has been (for 14 years and counting) with the Nearly New Shop, serving on the Governing Committee. Not only does he work on the days the shop is open, he can be found there during the week doing whatever is necessary, including overseeing the goings on in the buildings comprising the NN compound. He is a member of the Computer Club and was on the Sun City Center Softball Club until two knee replacements knocked him out of that activity. In their spare time, these two have a gardening plot with the Tillers and Toilers. A busy couple, for sure. So, if you see them around, just stop and say “hello” and thank them for serving our community so well. OUR HATS OFF TO MORE GOOD NEIGHBORS, DICK AND ELAINE. NOTICE THEY COME IN PAIRS??

George and Melba Strawn

Carol and Donnis Reynolds

George and Melba Strawn and Carol and Donnis Reynolds have been named December’s Volunteers of the Month by the Sun City Center Security Patrol. For many volunteers, the Security Patrol is a good way to learn the geography of Sun City Center. But by the time they joined the Patrol 18 years ago, the Strawns were already delivering Meals on Wheels, so they knew their way around town. They were recruited by a friend who was very active in the Patrol, and now they tell newcomers that serving on the Patrol is very rewarding. They’re drivers on Team 16. They recall the time they were driving late at night when they saw a man at a home under construction. When the man realized he was observed, he took off. But the Strawns had noted his vehicle license number so authorities could follow up.

T h e R e y n ol d s ag re e n ot every day on Patrol is packed with excitement but simply seeing and being seen is important. After all, they’ve learned that people who leave their house for “just a moment” may return to find a thief has entered while they were gone. That’s where the Patrol’s motto of “Vigilance” comes in, knowing something just doesn’t seem right when a stranger seems to be lurking around a neighborhood. They’re drivers for Team 2, and were recruited nine years ago by a neighbor across the street. They laugh as they recall, “You hardly get your bags unpacked before you’re approached.” —Bob Powers

DO GOOD, FEEL GOOD People who regularly volunteer have better mental, emotional and physical health--including a 40 percent decreased risk for high blood pressure. Other benefits of giving back: • 76% say volunteering has made them feel healthier • 80% of recent volunteers feel more in control of their health • 78% of volunteers report lower stress levels • 94% claim volunteering has improved their mood —Source: Women’s Health Magazine - Dec. 2013

SECURITY PATROL GOES THE EXTRA MILE

By Uta Kuhn. Thanks to a good Samaritan who turned in a change purse filled with money, credit cards and other information to the Security Patrol, there is a happy owner of that change purse in SCC today. The change purse, found in the Winn Dixie parking lot, was turned into the Security Patrol on the evening of Dec. 11. The next morning, Barbara Lewis, administrative assistant, immediately went to work to try to find the owner. Barbara was able to get the owner’s phone number from the AAA card found in the change purse. She immediately contacted the owner and let her know that she could pick up the change purse at the Security Patrol Office. Later during that day, the owner did come to the Patrol Office to pick up the purse, explaining that getting the purse back was such a blessing, especially during the holidays. She told Barbara it was the only money she had to buy presents for her children and grandchildren who live with her. Barbara commented that it was a great feeling to be able to return the purse to its owner. So this is just one of the ways in which members of the Patrol “GO THE EXTRA MILE” on many occasions and make a difference in this great community.

Club Happenings 3 Lapidary Teacher of the Month Ted Boydston

After a 30-year educational career as a high school science teacher, regional science coordinator and district science supervisor for Miami-Dade county, Ted retired and moved to SCC with his wife in 1999. However, Ted continued his educational actvities by earning a PhD from USF where he continued doing educational research for the next ten years. With his wife’s urging, Ted took a class in lost wax casting. He was hooked! Ted became an assistant in teaching lost wax casting and cabochons in 2011. Finding unused faceting machines, Ted, with the aid of books and the net, taught himself how to make gems from rock. In 2012 he began teaching classes in faceting. Ted not only teaches classes but is also a very active student in wire wrapping and enameling. For Ted, life continues to be both a learning and teaching experience. His work can be seen and purchased at the Lapidary jewelry store.

We were able to get close to these interesting animals and touch most of them if we were curious. The January meeting will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, in the Florida Room. All the remaining meetings for this year will be held in the Florida Room. Arrive at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. The program for January 11 will be about birds of prey. We will learn how these birds adapt to the environment, why they are unique, and how they survive in the wild. The speaker from the Audubon Birds of Prey Rehab Center will bring a bald eagle and other birds of prey. The January 15 field trip to the Birds of Prey Rehab Center in Maitland, Florida, will allow visitors to see firsthand the work of the Center focused on the rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and release of Florida’s raptors. Club Happenings 4 January Art Gallery Exhibition

Potters’ Wheel Club

January 2014

Vickie Robertson and Mary Chabot with samples of their art. The January exhibit at The Art Gallery in SCC will feature a two-woman show displaying the artworks of Vickie Robertson and Mary Chabot. Growing up in the Kansas City area and good friends with artist Bob Holloway, Vickie Robertson got her love of art from Bob and his wife. Later, while her husband was stationed in Germany, Vickie had the opportunity to broaden her artistic appreciation, traveling through France, Italy and Greece, among others. Once back in the US, Vickie put her artistic aspirations on hold while she helped put four students through college. Once she and her husband retired she took classes in art history, color theory and interior decorating. Moving to SCC in 2012, Vickie took classes in acrylics and pastel, the mediums she now works in, but looks forward to returning to oil painting, her preferred medium.

Originally from Bronx, NY, Mary Chabot earned her Master’s degree in mathematics from Notre Dame University. Later, moving to southern California she raised two daughters and taught college mathematics for 40 years. It was only after she retired and moved to SCC in 2010 that Mary was able to satisfy her passion for art and immediately started taking watercolor classes at both SCC and Kings Point. A member of the SCC Art Club, Kings Point Art League, Florida Watercolor Society and Art Center Sarasota, her award winning artworks have been featured in Art Center Manatee and the Florida Watercolor Society online show. Many of Mary’s works are part of private collections. The reception for this new exhibit will be held in the Art Room on Wednesday, January 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Ladies were welcomed into the show with their choice of a mimosa, with or without alcohol, followed by a delicious catered lunch by Banquet Masters. Many had to pause several times as the ladies wanted a closer look and to touch and feel the fabrics. Drawings for several nice door prizes and gift baskets were held throughout the afternoon adding to the excitement of the event. Many ladies left the show carrying their purchases and looking forward to our next event. —Mary Culliton

MFST holds Holiday Luncheon at Freedom Plaza The Military Family Support Trust (MFST) Board of Trustees held a Holiday Luncheon at the Maui Dining Room in Freedom Plaza on December 5, 2013. The luncheon was held to show appreciation to the many supporters, volunteers and other individual guests who make it possible for MFST to reach out to our military families. In addition to thanking the generous efforts of the Trust donors, the luncheon also highlighted the students of the Monroe Middle School Junior Leadership Corps. The Youth Leadership Corps’ current leader is Air Force Sgt Melissa Hoskins. The school is located outside the MacDill Air Force Base and enrolls students from the base as well as the community. It is one of the many educational groups provided monetary assistance by MFST. The students passed out hand-made appreciation cards to the luncheon guests and Trustees, and each student provided commentary regarding their background, the school and what it has done for them as well as their future goals and aspirations.

flight simulators. One such simulator was discussed in the November 8 Osprey meeting. It is so realistic that pilots passing their check ride in the simulator can fly solo on their first F-35 flight. (No two seat F-35 Joint Strike Fighters are being built). You do not have to be former military to attend or become a member: all that is required is an interest in military aviation. For further information please email silverosprey@yahoo.com or go to suncitycenter. org, select “Activities,” then “Veterans.” For information on the luncheon to be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Plaza Club, 3932 Upper Creek Drive, Sun City Center, please call Tom Harding by phone 813-634-1236 or e-mail tharcons@aol.com. 100 years ago. His take-off is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. from the bay next to the History Museum on the Waterfront, just next to the entrance of the Pier. It will take about 20 minutes for him to fly about 100 feet off the water to land in Hillsborough Bay just south of Davis Island near the Peter O. Knight airport. There will be TV coverage on both ends of the flight. The City of St. Petersburg’s “First Night” New Year’s Eve Celebration will be held at the History Museum on the Waterfront. Tony Jannus (impersonator) will speak at 7 p.m. Kermit Weeks will speak at 8 p.m. The above information is probably not enough for true aviation historians. They will no doubt Google “airlinecentennial” and click on Flight 2014-Home or go directly to airlinecentennial.org.

The chief of restoration, Ken Kellett, told us how his crew was in the midst building the 44’ wingspan biplane replica, and then later matching it with a reverse engineered 75 hp 6 cylinder water cooled engine. Our thoughts at the time were, “this is great, but in the short time remaining, can that really happen at 10:30 a.m. on New Year’s Morning 2014?” It looks like it will! Kevin Weeks, owner of Fantasy of Flight, will do what Tony Jannus did exactly

FREEDOM PLAZA HAPPENINGS

The sun setting on Sun City Center December 6 found many residents putting finishing touches on an incredible array of Golf carts in preparation for the SCC Christmas Parade. Entries were transformed into sleighs, trains, winter wonderlands, houses and even a fortress complete with a life size tin soldier. It was obvious that a great deal of thought, hours of energy and just plain hard work went into turning ordinary golf carts into the fanciful creations for the annual golf cart parade. Saturday, Decemb er 7, a brilliant blue sky set the stage for the annual SCC Christmas Parade. Over 100 carts lined up at the community center parking lot along North Pebble Beach Blvd. At Freedom Plaza a large golf cart that is ordinarily used to shuttle residents from one end of the campus to the other had been transformed into a patriotic tribute to Christmas. The conveyance with red, white, silver tinsel and fringe with two large silver stars adorning the roof, glistened in the bright sunlight. The eight passengers who boarded were appropriately clad in red blazers and red Santa hats. We were proud to represent Freedom Plaza. What a thrill it was as we went by the enthusiastic residents of Sun City Center who lined the streets waiting for the parade to pass by.

Good cheer was the order of the day. Cries of “Merry Christmas” were heard over and over throughout the parade route. Near the end of the parade route a battery died. The Freedom Plaza cart slowly came to a complete stop. Just like a little Christmas magic, helping hands appeared from nowhere to push the disabled cart to one side. Another kindly neighbor appeared, helped with the charger we had carried along and the problem was soon fixed. We finished the parade. Yes, the spirit of Christmas giving is alive and well in SCC. No wonder we all love the Christmas season so very much. And doesn’t everyone love a parade. December has to be the busiest month of the year, not only at Freedom Plaza but for all of Sun City Center. The calendar hardly holds all the events that we all want to attend. Either the month needs to be longer or maybe we need to add a second December to the year. Either way, the music, the food, the worship all combine to make this the season of love and goodwill. Adding to the festivities this year was the celebration of Hanukkah, a joyous celebration of faith. Our wish for 2014 is simply, “Let there be Peace on Earth for all mankind.” May God Bless us all. —M.J. Rice

SCC Security Patrol Receives Community Foundation Grant

Are you searching for a Financial Advisor? Evelyn Lunsford, chair of The Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center (center), presents Patrol Chief Bob Powers and Patrol Board President Karen Ryan a grant check. The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, and its affiliate chapter The Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center, recently awarded the SCC Security Patrol a grant to update the Patrol’s two-way radio system. The Patrol plans to use the funds from the grant to update all five Patrol vehicles to provide stronger transmitting capabilities over the currently installed radios. “Our current radios are over 15 years old and are about ready to disintegrate,” said Patrol Chief Bob Powers. “Thankfully, The Community Foundation recognized our need for new radios. These new radios will be an enhanced safety feature for our drivers, dispatchers and the general public. The Patrol wishes to extend our gratitude to the Community Foundation.” The radios will have a wider range of coverage, enhanced clarity and the capability for future GPS installation, adding an additional safety feature for Patrol drivers and dispatchers. The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization that administers funds established by individuals, corporations, private foundations and nonprofit organizations to support the charitable needs of the Tampa Bay area.

ARCHERY RANGE ON SOUTH CAMPUS

Since its grand opening in April, 2013, the Sun City Center Archery Club range, next to the dog parks on the South Campus complex, has undergone upgrades with a new shed for storing the targets and a canopy on a concrete slab that makes the facility handicap accessible. There are eight target sites set from 5 yards to 40 yards. All members shoot from a single line as shown in the photo. The cry of “Clear” is heard when any one steps across that line, bringing all shooting to an immediate halt. The club will be having monthly meetings on the 4th Friday at 2 p.m. in the Royal Room of the Atrium Building. On Mondays each week, come to the range at 2 p.m. to watch or, as a member, join in the club shoot. For lessons, call Jerry or Linda Anderson at 330-206-7048 or Joe Mugavero at 633-1230.

On Wednesday, December 11, the Sun City Center shuffleboard travel team was braced for their second match of the season with Rice Creek, the current league front runner. It was the 4th match of this season’s 18-match tournament and was played here at the Sun City Center shuffleboard courts. The other two teams in the Bayshore Shuffle Travel League, Hawaiian Isles “A” and “B,” also played their 4th match at Hawaiian Isles. Having been defeated by Rice Creek in their first game this year, the SCC travel team has held practices twice each week, with some players also getting together to hold additional practices session in addition to participating in the SCC Shuffleboard Club regular play. It has apparently been working because the Sun City Center team had its best outing in the two years since the team was formed. This week’s match against Rice Creek resulted in a victory by Sun City Center over Rice Creek with a final score of 9 to 6. While extremely happy about the win, the team was back at practice on Thursday after the match, preparing for an upcoming match against

Hawaiian Isles “A” which will be an “away” match held at Hawaiian Isles The SCC team continues to improve every week. Team Captain Roger Kennicutt along with his Co-Captain Don Cobleigh and their fine coaches continue follow a multi-facetted training program. The program includes training in both improvement of basic shooting technique and learning the game strategies. The strategies being taught have been tested by time and have been winning games for 100 years for thousands of shufflers around the country. Current League Standings: (note that a match has a maximum total score of 15 points) through Match 4. Rice Creek 36 Hawaiian Isles “B” 34 Hawaiian Isles “A” 26 Sun City Center 24 The next match to be played at home will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. The match will be against Hawaiian Isles “B,” one of the current top two teams in the league. Community Association and guests are welcome to come down to the shuffleboard courts and watch how a match is played.

Lawn Bowling 2013 Annual Memorial Tournament Winners The SCC Lawn Bowling Club held its Annual Memorial Tournament finals on December 16, 2013. A Memorial Tournament is played every year to honor previous bowlers who helped teach the game to past and current club bowlers. This year, to continue the tradition, we enjoyed some very exciting and close matches. The semifinal matches were extremely close and were decided by one- and two-point conclusions. This year’s winning team headed by Mike Perkins (skip), Dave Clarke (vice) and Jim Casper (lead), were tough throughout the tournament. They beat a very good finalist team headed by Jim Byrne (skip), Annette Dispenziere (vice) and Corry McClellan (lead).
