I am very thankful for the generosity of all of our members who have made contributions to the Hardship Fund over the course of the year and particularly at dues paying time. I can assure all of you that the members of the Hardship Panel are very good stewards of your contributions and that every hardship approved by them is deserved and required. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY. Capital Funding Notice One critical aspect of any plan is how that plan will be financed. The cost per single copy in Sun City Center is very blessed that the CA office is going from our forefathers were smart enough to have the foresight to think about 5 cents to 10 cents and how new facilities could be financed. double sided copies will In our Bylaws they implemented the be 20 cents each, effective $1200 transfer fee that goes into the Capital Account. The good thing March 1. about the transfer fee is that it comes from new residents and real estate COMMUNITY investors - not current residents. One of the things being looked ASSOCIATION at is using this funding stream to SCHEDULE accelerate the construction of new facilities. South Pebble Beach/U.S. 301 Connection This important issue was addressed by the membership in a referendum vote held during the month of February. The results of the

referendum were overwhelmingly against opening South Pebble Beach to U.S. 301. The option favoring unrestricted public access received 310 votes while the option against unrestricted public access (except for an emergency exit/entrance gate) received 2669 votes. Therefore, the wishes of the majority of voters support the Minto request to modify the General Development Site Plan permitting an emergency egress/ ingress with a locked gate to U.S. 301. I am very thankful to those of you who did vote – this was an important issue and deserved your attention. Membership Dues The due date for CA membership dues has passed. An ugly subject but one that must be addressed. If your dues have been paid, there is nothing to worry about. Those members who did not pay by January 31 were assessed a penalty. If dues are not paid by April 1, interest at the rate of 18% per annum will be assessed and a lien will be placed against the title of the house. After the liens are filed, we will once again look at those members who have not paid dues for several years as candidates for foreclosure. As you may recall, last year we filed foreclosure actions on several homes all of which resulted in past dues being collected. If for some reason you cannot pay your dues, an alternative is to come to the CA office and see if a payment plan can be worked out. $256 per member per year is pretty cheap for all that you get. Long Range Plan The initial steps in developing a Long Term Strategic Plan are being taken in this issue of The News of Sun City Center. This edition contains a survey designed to get

SCCCA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

I would like to thank every club for their response in meeting the deadline of Feb. 28 for filing the club listing of membership. We tried the Internet to notify the clubs along with the capabilities of requesting the list in Excel data form. This enables the clubs to update via the computer and forward it back to us. They can use the list for other functions, such as listing paid dues within their club. Clubs can request this through the Internet by email. The email address is sccboard@suncitycenter.org. All the clubs received a letter with their club membership listing for 2010 in the mail this past month. I would also like to extend an invitation to the clubs to attend the monthly Leaders Meeting to get the latest information about what is going on around the campus so they can keep updated and ask questions of concerns.

Crew Tends South Campus With Care

The CA’s Senior Maintenance Supervisor Kelly Emerson calls the South Campus crew “a powerhouse unit” with talented youth and seasoned veterans. He said, “Aaron approaches each task in an intellectual, detailed manner to get the best results possible.”; (L to R) South Campus Maintenance Supervisor Aaron Cook, Diana Ackland, Kelly Emerson, Terry Hoffman, Frank Hickey, Sam Soria, Ben Bradley, James Mounts and Ken Johnson. Associates Riley Rogers, Michel Lincourt and John Lyons were unavailable for the photo.

By Phyllis Hodges The South Campus maintenance group is proud of their role in keeping the SCC Community Association’s amenities on South Pebble Beach attractive and welcoming. Aaron Cook, South Campus Maintenance Supervisor since August 2009, says it’s their home away from home after all, and they want CA members to feel good about the facility and grounds. There are four full-time associates on the crew; seven are part-time. Cook says their collective experience and skills make his job easier. “We have the expertise to handle most electrical, plumbing,

3

painting, construction and grounds keeping tasks,” he says. Ben Bradley and Michel Lincourt are even pool certified, which means they also keep a watchful eye on the Central Campus pools. Associates are cross-trained to increase the team’s effectiveness and they work whatever hours are needed to handle the job at hand. “This group feels like my extended family,” Cook says. “A positive attitude is essential because we interact with residents constantly.” To foster team camaraderie, he encourages them to get together to celebrate birthdays, etc. No doubt they will make a big deal of Cook’s wedding this year. (A date hasn’t been set yet.)

OFFICIAL NOTICE Membership Vote on Bylaw Change March 23, 2011 - Community Hall – 7:00 p.m. PROPOSED AMENDMENT: BYLAW IV - COMMITTEES Section 1. To remove Development & Grants Committee, Legal Committee and Planning Committee from the list of Standing Committees of the Association. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This Proposed Amendment is being brought before the Community Association members for their consideration. We need to align our Bylaws with the way our business is actually conducted. In the twenty-five years since our Community Association was established, business practices and legal statutes have changed considerably. These changes are the result of ongoing reviews of the Community Association procedures and policies over the last year. Of the eight Bylaw mandated Standing Committees, three of them have not been used for several years. Our legal requirements are now handled directly with two law firms when a situation arises and no longer through a Legal Committee. The Development & Grants Committee was originally established to deal with the “Give a Little Back Program” that we no longer participate in and the grants are presently handled by a Board member. Many of the functions of the Planning Committee have been assumed by other committees and The Projects Office. These committees have out lived their usefulness and are no longer used or required. The Board of Directors recommends approving this amendment to the Bylaws.

Mike Albanese Named New Chief of the SCC Security Patrol is going on. Updating instructional manuals is also on his list of things to do. He also stated that it has come to his attention that team captains need better training to take over a team, so training sessions will be implemented. In order to become more familiar with his flock, Mike plans on coming into the office at 6 a.m. once in a while, to meet the people working the early shift, and also at 9:00 pm. to meet the people working the later shifts. Wit h all of his ne w responsibilities, Mike does have some spare time once in a while during which time you will find him at the Fitness Center, or diving at the Florida Aquarium. UTA KUHN PHOTO

By Uta Kuhn The Security Patrol has a new Chief, his name is Mike Albanese. Mike and his family moved to Sun City Center in 2003 from Atlanta, Georgia after his retirement from being a truck driver. Mike told this reporter that he and his family loved Atlanta, but there was nothing to do there after retirement. They have family in Tampa whom they would visit and Mike’s sister-in-law lives in Sun City Center. This is what prompted them to relocate here instead of elsewhere in Florida. Shortly after arriving in Sun City Center, Mike joined both the Security Patrol and the the SCC Emergency Squad. At the Security Patrol he volunteered as a driver, and Team Captain. At the Emergency Squad, Mike served as a First Responder and Ambulance Driver during his tenure. He also served on the Board of Directors. At present Mike is still active at the Emergency Squad as a van driver. In asking him about whether he aspired to become Chief of the Security Patrol, his response was

“not really, I’m really the type of person who likes to follow and then get the job done as I’m asked to do.” But since he was the only one who stepped forward, and with excellent tutelage and guidance from Martha Finley, he is comfortable with seeing to it that the Patrol keeps moving along smoothly.

He has no major plans for any significant changes, except, some minor remodeling at the office and also making sure that communication is handled in a more efficient manner. In that capacity he plans to have a monthly one-page newsletter to let everyone know what

Volunteer to serve with the SCC Security Patrol. Drivers are asked to serve only three hours per month. You will help keep SCC the safest place to live in Hillsborough County.

Manatee Memorial Hospital Keeps the Beat Going Strong Surgery Can Correct Potentially Dangerous Heart Condition The mitral valve, located between the upper- and lower-left chambers of the heart, is susceptible to problems. When it doesn’t close all the way, it can leak a small amount of blood. This condition is known as mitral valve regurgitation. To correct this condition, surgeons at Manatee Memorial can access the mitral valve through the breastbone and repair the valve to create a tighter seal. This procedure may require a three- to five-day hospital stay.

Alessandro Golino, MD Trained by renowned cardiac surgery pioneer Denton Cooley, M.D.

“Patients who have successful mitral valve surgery dramatically increase their life expectancy, so they’re on par with someone with a completely normal heart,” says Alessandro Golino, MD, Chief of Surgery at Manatee Memorial and a cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in mitral valve repair. Dr. Golino had a 100 percent success rate for mitral valve surgery from January 2009 through December 2009.* Nationally, the overall success rate for mitral valve repair is less than 60 percent.

How Do I Know if I Have Mitral Valve Regurgitation? Mitral valve regurgitation can strike anyone at any age, but the risk does increase as you get older. Sometimes, people who have potentially deadly mitral valve problems do not have warning symptoms. This is why regular check-ups with your family doctor or cardiologist are important.

The 20,000 square-foot museum was designed by architect Yann Weymouth. Weymouth was firm Pei’s Chief of Design on the Grand Louvre Pyramid project in Paris. He’s now Senior Vice President at Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK), an international architectural firm with an office in Tampa. Two key features of the museum’s design are the spiral staircase in the middle and the glass dome and wall that consist of unique glass triangles that are 18” thick. The museum is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m. It is 38 miles from SCC. By Judy Stimson The Dali Museum opened at its new location on January 11, 2011. It includes 96 oil paintings from the A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse collection, Dali illustrations on paper for two books, a selection of photographic works by Philippe Halsman in collaboration with Dali, a Dali created black and white film, and an introductory “The Dali Enigma” film. The collection represents 80 years of the artist’s work and claims to be the most comprehensive collection in the world. Salvador Dali, born in Spain in 1904, transitioned through five different styles of works: Early, AntiArt, Surrealism, Nuclear Mysticism, and Late Works, which are all represented at the museum. In 1943 the Morse’s bought their first Dali, a 1940 oil painting called “Daddy Longlegs of the Evening – Hope!” Fittingly, this is the first painting on the tour. You can take a self-guided tour with an audio set you may get at the ticket counter. The information corresponds with the numbers on the paintings. You can also take hourly docent-guided tours that start on the half hour, with the first tour starting at 10:30 a.m. Before you start the tour, watch “The Dali Enigma”

‘Putting on the Dog’ is Name of the Game at 9th Annual SCC Dog Show

More than 300 dog lovers showed up for last year’s SCC Dog Show. SUN CITY CENTER, FL — All dogs living in Sun City Center and Kings Point are asked to remind their humans that registration is now open for the 9th Annual SCC Dog Show. The popular event is slated for March 26, 2011 at Community Hall (1910 Pebble Beach Blvd.) on the south side of S.R. 674. The show starts at 9:30 a.m., with doors opening one hour earlier. This is always a relaxed, fun event, and dog participants don’t need to be pedigreed. “In fact, most of our competitors are mixed breeds,” says Winnie Walsh, co-chair of the Dog Show. “They’re our pets, and we just love to show them off.”

With some dogs, the showing off involves costumes, with others it’s tricks. But it’s also just fine to walk the pooch across the stage in front of the judges and audience. Among the judging categories are Best Trained, Best Appearance and Best in Show. The four-footed contestants will be divided by weight and size — small, medium and large — instead of breed. The Dog Show is a fund-raiser sponsored by SCC’s Dog Owners Group (DOG), but competitors don’t need to be club members. Registration is $5 per dog, $10 for non-DOG members. Entrants can be accompanied by only one owner;

other non-canines pay $3 admission at the door. To download a registration form, go to www.sccdog.org and click on the blinking “Dog Show” button at the top of the page. Registration materials may also be found at the SCC Dog Park, and several dogrelated businesses in the Greater Sun City Center areas. Completed forms and fees should be mailed to Carolyn Krauss, 655 Tremont Greens, SCC 33573, and must be in by March 14. For more information about the show, contact dogshow2011@ yahoo.com.

“Kids Against Hunger” Packaging Breaks Record

Over 440 people turned out on Saturday, January 22 at the Borini Theatre/Kings Point to package food for the food pantries in the area. These enthusiastic volunteers packaged 62,000 meals in just two hours. It was incredible to watch … just like little worker bees on a mission! These meals are now stored at The Good Samaritan Mission in Balm for distribution to the food pantries at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, Beth-El Mission, The Good Samaritan Mission, Calvary Lutheran Food Pantry, St. Anne’s Food Pantry and The Lord’s Lighthouse Mission. Volunteers came from as far away as 50 miles as well as numerous friends locally, including our primary source of funding and volunteers: The Sun City Center Rotary Club. But this project could not have been done without the Men’s Club, the Woman’s Club, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Shriner’s Club, Emergency Squad, Security Patrol, Interfaith Council, Samaritan Services, South Bay Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, Beth Israel and all the houses of worship and support services and clubs in the area. The funding was provided by The Sun City Center Rotary, The Community Foundation of Sun City Center and Thrivent Financial.

Commemorative items are available to help you remember the year-long celebration. Visit the display in the Atrium on the Central Campus, N. Pebble Beach Blvd., to get your tee shirts, mugs and playing cards. Tee shirts in black and white are $10, personalized mugs are $10 ($8 without name), and cards are $10. Proceeds will be used to help defray celebration expenses.

(L to R) Joe Elam is leading the 50th anniversary memento sales effort and is grateful for volunteers like Howard and Dotti Volgenau who take a turn staffing the display table in the Atrium.

Ann Marie Leblanc is putting out a call for volunteers to work the 4th of July breakfast. She needs helpers for the following chores: pancake turners, egg cookers, hosts and hostesses, coffee servers, money and ticket takers, etc. Also, on Sunday a crew is needed to help with the setup and on Monday with the take down at noon. If you’re a younger senior, it’s not too early to start thinking about Medicare. It’s not something you can do at the last minute ... and it can be complicated. Your best bet is to bookmark Medicare’s website (www.medicare. gov) on your computer so you’ll have it handy. Second best step is to take the quiz on the front page of the site: Find Out If You’re Eligible. The summary at the end will give you some answers you need, such as on what date you’ll become eligible for Medicare. Some rules: • You need to apply during the three months before you turn age 65 if you want Medicare Part B to start when you become 65. • Medicare Part B covers things that Part A doesn’t. Part B covers doctor visits, physical therapy, home care and outpatient hospital care. Part A covers care in a hospital, some home care, and nursing facilities.

9

• Medicare Part A is free. You don’t pay for it as long as you have worked enough quarters for Social Security. If not, you’ll likely have to pay. • Medicare Part B costs $115.40 a month at this point and will be deducted from your Social Security check each month. • Your initial enrollment period starts three months before your 65th birthday. If you haven’t signed up in time, Part B will be delayed for three months. Then, if you still don’t sign up during open enrollment each year, your monthly premium will go up and stay up forever. Parts A and B are just two pieces of the Medicare puzzle. Familiarize yourself with the rest of it well in advance, including Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D). Download the Medicare and You 2011 Handbook from the site for reference. Proposed Capital Projects - What...Why...How?

By Director Martin Hurwitz

15

What Should Be Built?

The Capital Projects Survey 1. published elsewhere in this issue of “The NEWS of Sun City Center” is being conducted by your Board of Directors to help determine what major projects should be included 2. in the community’s multi-year plan and how they should be paid for. This article is written to stir your thoughts —not to recommend a particular project or funding method. 3.

History

In 2004 a community referendum approved spending up to $2 million to accomplish four renovation/construction projects: A New Maintenance Building; A New Exercise Room and renovation of the existing Health Center (Fitness Center); Renovation of the Little Theater (Rollins Theater) for general purpose and theater performances; and A New Combined Social Room and Café. The first two projects have been completely accomplished and the third partially accomplished. No significant action has been taken with regard to the fourth project. The $2 million allocated was used in full. In the six years since the referendum was held, the community has changed. As the population and environment has changed, our needs and desires have probably changed. The survey asks what projects you believe will best serve the community in the next few years. There are 10 suggestions offered, and you have the chance to offer your own. The discussions following each of the suggestions are offered only to stir your thoughts. They are not recommendations and do not reflect a Board position. The Board will consider all responses and then present a plan to the community for 4. its approval.

HOW WOULD YOU FUND THE PROJECTS?

_________

HOW WOULD YOU FUND THE PROJECTS?

It is likely that the preferred projects will require more capital funds than the Association has in the bank. Currently the only source of capital funding is the $1,200 transfer fee received whenever an existing home is re-sold. There will probably be about $800,000 in the Capital Fund by the end of 2011. We can expect to add about $200,000 a year after that if homes sell as they did in 2010 and the transfer fee is not changed. In order to finance the new capital projects would you: (Choose one)

Delay construction until all the money required is in the bank? (This could delay projects for several years until sufficient money is accumulated.)

If you chose to delay construction would you support a dues increase to put more money into the capital fund in addition to the transfer fees? (This will slowly put more money into the capital fund, about $10,000 per year for each dollar the dues are increased)

________

Support a bond issue or other funding instrument where we would borrow money against the future collection of transfer fees? Capital funds now in the bank may be held in reserve to back up the transfer fee collections and support the debt repayment. Dues would not be increased under this plan unless transfer fee collections fell significantly below expectations. (This would allow us to accomplish some projects immediately.)

Delay construction until all the money required is in the bank? (This could delay projects for several years until sufficient money is accumulated.)

In order to finance the new capital projects would you: (Choose one) ________

SMALL PAINTINGS DISPLAY

Susan Corbett has been selected to display a series of her small watercolor artworks during the month of March 2011. Her formal art training was acquired at Paier School of Art in Connecticut, which helped ignite her subsequent passion for watercolors. Her works feature angels hidden in the paintings, the angels representing the many friends that are there for her in times of need. Susan’s works can be seen during March, displayed in the showcase outside the The Gallery, which is located adjacent to the Art Room. –Ed Laudano

Viruses Sometimes Attack the Heart

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had the flu and called his doctor for medicine. Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was having a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart. I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have? How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it? — R.R. A N S W E R : Yo u r f r i e n d h a d myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was first identified. Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infection (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal disorder (stomach flu) might precede it. A young person— and your friend is considered young — struggling

March 2011

to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause. Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one person to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus. We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed, since nearly all Coxsackie infections are minor troubles. In cases like your friend’s, medicines to keep the heart beating forcefully usually can tide a person over the dangerous period of heart failure. Your friend’s story is tragic. The booklet on congestive heart failure describes the more common kinds of it, not the kind due to viral infections. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853- 6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the reader’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Who Wrote That Book – Sister Janet

Janet Ractenwald (aka Sister Janet) loves art, children and animals. Her children’s book Skittles Finds Friends in the Storm is completely illustrated with her distinctive art work. Sister Janet is a member of the Sisters for Christian Community. She was born in Pennsylvania and has lived in Sun City Center for seven years, deciding to move here after friends settled here. She attended Wheeling University in West Virginia and Mundelein College in Chicago and joined the Catholic order when she was about 20 years old. She said she felt the call for this vocation earlier but decided to wait until she was a little older before making this serious life decision. Sister Janet

has worked with the poor in many areas and now teaches religion classes at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Wimauma. Her love for Skittles, who is a resident of Sun City Center, inspired her to try writing a book about him. She likes to visit Skittles and always brings him a treat. Sister Janet’s artistic talent made it possible for her to do the full-page illustrations in her book. She has had her art displayed in many shows and has won several awards for her watercolor paintings. She hopes that children reading this book will learn and understand about friendship and how we find friends by opening our hearts to let them in.

(Answers to frequently asked questions at the CA) By Susan Muise

“Can I park on the sidewalks in Sun City Center?” No. The sidewalks in Sun City Center are not meant to hold the weight of a car. Also, many of our residents use electric scooters to get around and cannot get past a car or even a golf cart that is parked on the sidewalk. If someone on an electric scooter tries to go around a car or golf cart parked on the sidewalk, they are in danger of toppling over as they try to make the change from the sidewalk to the grass. Since there is plenty of room for parking in the street, it seems selfish to possibly damage the sidewalks and have the county use our tax dollars to repair them or to create a huge disadvantage for those of our neighbors in electric scooters. Please, please be mindful of what you are doing when you park your car or golf cart. And be mindful that you leave enough room when you park your car in the street so that other cars can go by safely. If you park on a curve, please check to make sure other drivers will be able

to see any other cars coming around the curve. Be extra careful when attending yard sales. Parking should be on the same side of the street as the yard sale so that traffic can safely get by. We need to think about the same thing on trash day when we pile our trash on the sidewalk in front of our homes. Folks in electric scooters, wheel chairs or even those walking often cannot get around our trash. Put your trash on your grass or in your driveway. The trash people will still pick it up. It doesn’t take much to be a good neighbor, and someday you may be in the position of having to try to get around an obstacle without your full mobility. Then you will appreciate those who have taken the time to park carefully and those who keep trash out of your way so that you have full view of the sidewalk and street ahead.

Minnie Minnie is a Terrier mix who was brought to the shelter with her three siblings. Her placement at C.A.R.E. came just in time. Minnie was in very poor condition upon arrival. She is also the smallest of the pack. Now that she has received lots of TLC, Minnie is growing into a healthy and beautiful little girl. Her mini size doesn’t stop her from running the show. She loves to tease her brothers and then run when they finally have had enough of her. Minnie is very affectionate with people and has the cutest little arf! when she wants your attention. The pack are a blast to watch play together but each would love to call somewhere “home.” As part of Minnie’s adoption, she will be spayed and microchipped. She is current on her shots. DOB: November 3, 2010.

Shoney Shoney is a small but beautiful girl so she probably doesn’t hang around the big boys too much. She is a small gray and white domestic short hair girl and was brought into C.A.R.E. with three buddies. Unfortunately her owner could no longer provide much needed care. Shoney is a sweet cat who likes to be held but be sure to hold her securely under her feet. She will stay with you purring all the time. She likes to let you pet her chin and neck. Shoney has been spayed and brought up-to-date on her shots and microchipped. DOB: June 2006.

The Annual Lawn Bowling Challenge match between the lady members of Sun Coasters and men members of Pebble Beach Lawn Bowling Clubs was played on Thursday, February 17. The men had won the three previous encounters, so the ladies were hoping for a victory. Regretfully, it was not to be, even though the ladies won four of the six matches played. Their total points (ends won) were 47 for the men, 43 for the ladies.

President Geri Shayman presented the trophy to the Pebble Beach President David Meixner. Every year the Sun Coasters and Pebble Beach teams play in the West Coast Florida League against Sarasota and Lakeland. The final match against Sarasota was played at Sun City Center the day before the Challenge match, and the result was a tie. The men and the ladies each won six of their 12 matches. Unfortunately it was not enough to secure first place; however, Sun City Center finished a close second in the league. The Challenge match the following day between the Men and Ladies was the finale to an enjoyable season of competitive matches which had started just after Christmas. After the match the players –David Burbery and guests enjoyed food and drink in the clubhouse, and Sun Coasters

He deserves to stand on his merit ... he shouldn’t have to hear his name in the same sentence as Favre’s every time someone mentions this victory.
