Construction Superintendent David Jones (left) confirms with CA Director Al Alderman that trenching for the new parking lot drain system is conforming to county standards. At one point, this 500-foot long trench is 13 feet below the road surface. According to county regulations, such trenches can only be filled in 1 foot at a time between county inspections. The inspections can be scheduled with the county representative 2 or 3 times a week and can be weather dependent. Compacting of the soil is accomplished between inspections.

By John Bowker The area shown in light blue is the enlarged and generally improved parking lot. The areas in darker grey will be developed as later phases of this overall upgrading program being planned by the Long-Range Planning Implementation Committee headed by CA Secretary David Floyd. The construction of the new parking lot includes an elaborate tunnel and underground piping program. The roadway surface will slope very gently away from the Atrium and Fitness Center Buildings toward a system of drains roughly in the middle of the parking area. Cement pipes ranging in diameter from 12 to 48 inches (ID) will carry off rain water to a new retention pond to be located on the recently acquired property donated to the CA by ClubLink (See #17 on the drawing). Northbound lanes of North Pebble Beach Boulevard are now being closed so water piping can be laid to the main water piping that runs down the middle of that 4-lane highway. That process, due to county inspection requirements, will take

Reflective stickers are available for your trash and recycle carts, thanks to Hillsborough County. Each residence may receive two stickers. The stickers are to be affixed to the right side of each cart, as you face it (refer to picture). Clean and dry the cart surface before placing the sticker. With carts in the street, wheels against the gutter, the right side will be in the headlights of oncoming vehicles. Your stickers may be picked up at the Information Center on Cherry Hills Drive, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bring your membership card.
The CA has installed WiFi at the South Campus building and is making it accessible for public use on the Central Campus as the budget allows. It is now accessible in the Atrium, Library and Fitness Center and will be incorporated in the buildings now being constructed. I Bid Farewell!
The News of Sun City Center
I have decided that more than five years has been enough for me as the editorin-chief of this newsletter. It was a fun project most of the time, but it is time for me to let go now that it has become more a burden than a joy. I want to especially thank my reporters: Phyllis Hodges, John Bowker and Uta Kuhn. Phyllis has covered all of the CA activities and did double duty as publicity chair of the 50th Anniversary! John seems to know most everything going on in the greater Sun City Center area and has done a superb job writing about them. Uta has been a continuing contributor keying in on several important topics. I want to thank all of you who have contributed information on their clubs and sports activities. Without your submissions, it would have been difficult to keep our residents informed of all that goes on here in Sun City Center. To Howie Griffin and Mike Killian, thanks for your input about what the CA Board is planning. And, a big thank you to all of you readers who let me know how much you have enjoyed reading each monthly issue of The NEWS of Sun City Center. I surely hope that continues. —Karen Jones, Editor-In-Chief

Many of you have aske d for Season Three of the popular Homeland television series. For months the release date was shrouded in secrecy prompting many inquiries on the Internet and much speculation as to why it was being held back for so long. Good news: the release date is set for September 9 and we have two copies on order. The record has already been entered into our catalog, so you may begin reserving it now. We have also added Season Three of Call the Midwife, the popular British drama about a group of midwives serving the poor in postWorld War II London. The program has been signed for a fourth season which will be broadcast in the United States beginning in late March. For those of you breathlessly awaiting the premiere of Downton Abbey, Season Five, I’m afraid you will have to wait until Sunday, January 4, to see the new dramas of your favorite characters. That means the DVD release will probably be sometime in February or March. S h o u l d w e o r s h o u l d n’t we? Caster and his wife become obsessed with this mission but is their creation ultimately good or evil? Although Tom Clancy passed away in 2013, his co-author Mark Greaney has completed the latest thriller Tom Clancy Support and Defend which features Dominic Caruso, one of the members of the Campus, the top-secret organization formed by President Jack Ryan. Caruso’s mission is to keep important information from falling into enemy hands. Liane Moriarty (The Husband’s Secret) has a new bestseller: Big Little Lies, the story of a family trivia night at school gone disastrously wrong when someone ends up dead. Critics say that this is her best novel yet. The last book of the Deborah Harkness All Souls Trilogy is now available. The Book of Life completes the search for the missing manuscript Ashmole 782 which is being sought by witches, vampires and an assortment of other-world demons. Starting with A Discovery of Witches and continuing with Shadow of Night, reluctant witch and Oxford scholar Diana Bishop teams up with vampire and man-abouttown Matthew Clairmont to find the missing manuscript and discover the ancient mysteries it contains. Fans of Diana Gabaldon should enjoy this series. Happy Reading! —Elaine Birkinshaw
construction continues to be on schedule. Although the walls are up on all four of the planned buildings, the interior work will appear to be the slow work, with little change to the exterior of the building for a long time. This is expected and normal. Unfortunately several people are questioning the superintendent on site with regards to the construction, the schedule, as well as asking the subcontractors questions. This must stop to avoid delays and increased costs. Any time spent chatting with on-lookers is time that is not spent on getting the job completed. From time to time a Community Association member steps up and makes a real difference.
By Howie Griffin, Director and Board Newsletter Liaison Approximately six years ago, The News of Sun City Center was struggling with staff, CA members and the Board of Directors who were not in sync with how a community newsletter should be presented to the members. The Board of Directors made significant changes and one person stepped up to take the reins resulting in the professional way the SCCCA Newsletter is being proofed, printed and sent to members today. Because of the newsletter’s popularity with members, many who travel North in the summer request the newsletter be mailed to them so they can enjoy keeping up with the events in Sun City Center. Karen Jones became the editor-in-chief five and a half years ago when she stepped up and led the way to a new formatted newsletter. With the assistance of selected CA members and contributors, she put together the fine newsletter you enjoy today. She dedicated her time and talents every single month rearranging her personal and community involvements to assure the community that they would have remarks from the CA president, directors, club organizations and, of course, her passion, the golf community results. Immediately, articles started to become much more positive, uplifting and informative. The four-color picture additions became more popular, the advertisements more professional, and clubs started to contribute more events and accomplishments. Karen will finish her term as editor-in-chief with the September 2014 edition so as she put it, “I can work on my bucket list.” She plans to travel some and spend time putting on a golf course or two. Karen, the Community and I thank you for your dedication, leadership and expertise in bringing to us an excellent newsletter.

Looking Back ... SCC History Moment
September 2014
This is the second article in our monthly series of short stories about the history of SCC. Many Sun City Center residents know of our community’s grand opening on New Year’s weekend 1962, when thousands of people lined up along State Road 674, the rural shell road leading into the newly-developed “Del Webb’s Sun City,” and were swept up in the excitement of buying into this wonderful new living experiment. But what do we really know of the origin of our unique community? What do we know about our founder Del Webb and his development company? Or how a successful, vibrant community of retirees, carved from a cow pasture in rural west-central Florida, came to be? The towns along the central Gulf coast were growing in the 1950s and former farms and ranches in the area known as “America’s Salad Bowl” were being purchased by bankers and developers. A 13,000-acre cow pasture between Ruskin and Wimauma was purchased by Webb’s company to be developed into a new concept in living: an “active” retirement community. The concept itself was revolutionary – the very idea of an “active retirement” was considered strange to some!
Cowboy Berry Roberts tends cattle on farmland where South Bay Hospital now stands. Ground-breaking took place on May 10, 1961. Webb insisted that unlike other housing developments his community would open with several model homes, a post office, shopping center, recreation center, and a hotel with a restaurant, all open for business and ready to welcome new residents. New homes would be finished and ready for occupancy within a few months. Builders worked frantically to meet Webb’s strict deadlines for Opening Day and a brand new retirement city emerged from the farms and marshland. Next month, we’ll look at the man who founded our community and his ground-breaking concept in community living. —Sylvia Willis SCC History Society

Tampa Airport Offers Cell Phone Lot
Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. In the Great Hall at the United Community Church 1501 La Jolla Avenue, Sun City Center, FL
By Kai Rambow Tampa’s airport is consistently ranked one of the top in North America – with good reason. If you’re picking up family, friends or strangers at Tampa’s airport, you can save yourself a lot of stress. There is a cell phone parking lot that is easy to access. The lot has a realtime information board posting flight information. Frequently you know the plane has landed before your family can call you. In addition, there are restrooms and vending machines. (By the way, Orlando’s airport has two cell lots with a few paved spots, grass and nothing else.) Once the plane has landed, you can drive to short-term parking and park for one hour free. That’s plenty of time to meet your friends and pick up their checked luggage. Tip: If for some reason your party ends up with a major delay, head to International Plaza with plenty of great restaurants. It’s a five-minute drive away.
TOPICS: 1. Should we have open borders; and, if not, what should be done to protect them? 2. Why are thousands of children being bused to the U.S.? What is happening to them, and what should be done about them? 3. What are the economic ramifications of illegal immigration? 4. Should anyone illegally in the U.S. get amnesty; and, if so, under what conditions? The Panel discussion will be followed by written questions from the audience.
The moderator for the program is Bill Hodges. He is president of Hodges Seminars International, a management and communications consulting firm. Bill interviews government officials on the TV show “Spot Light on Government” and writes the syndicated column “Positive Talk” which is carried in the Observer. Bill devotes much of his Bill Hodges time conducting seminars and training groups in communications. The panelists, Philip Coates, Robert L. Mills, Frank Gomez and Frank Slesnick are instructors at the Community Church College. They are all knowledgeable about and deeply interested in America's public policy on immigration. The opinions of the panelists do not necessarily represent the positions of the Community Church College or the United Community Church.

Happening at Freedom Plaza
Freedom Plaza Proudly Hosted An Honor Flight Event!
September 2014
Returning by “Special Request”
SUN CITY CENTER SALUTES
“ ATHENA HOUSE” A transitional home for our female veterans Sunday, October 5, 2014 A new variety show is coming to Sun City Center with all of the proceeds from this show being used to help support the ATHENA HOUSE, the ONLY transitional housing in Florida for our female veterans returning from active duty in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq.
The flags that fluttered above Freedom Plaza’s American Eagle Boulevard on the Fourth of July had scarcely been stored away when they were, again, brought out and unfurled. On August 1, they flew over a host of cheering, flag-waving people lining the path of 38 WWII veterans being transported from the Plaza Club to Freedom Plaza Auditorium for the finale of a special program in their honor. The event was staged to pay tribute to WWII veterans who, because of physical disability, cannot make an “Honor Flight” trip taking them to Washington, D.C. Freedom Plaza was privileged to host the event. The Honor Flight Network is a national non-profit organization created solely to honor American veterans by enabling them to visit, cost-free, their respective service monuments at the WWII Memorial. There are chapters of the Honor Flight Network in every state, the local chapter being the Honor Flight of West Central Florida. Its coordinator, Bruce Ford of Sun City Center, originated the concept of holding an event to honor those veterans unable to fly to Washington. He broached the subject to staff members at Freedom Plaza and “the rest is history”. The Retired Officers Corporation (ROC), with offices at Freedom Plaza, undertook the responsibility of sponsoring and
implementing the event. The ROC staff of three, (Corena Firstad, president , with Assistants Chris Bowles and Cory Rak) started the day with a breakfast gathering for the veterans at the Plaza Club where a “virtual visit” to the WWII Monument took place via video. Afterward, the honorees were driven down flag-festooned American Eagle Boulevard to Freedom Plaza and a continuation of their celebration. They entered an Auditorium packed to standing-room-only capacity with applauding, cheering people where they were seated to enjoy a moving, yet entertaining, patriotic program planned by VFW Post #5. The appropriately bearded Santa Clause Drill Team provided comedy along with their salute to the various service branches before costumed “historic guests George Washington and Betsy Ross” made their entrance. President Washington (a.k.a. Bill Hamlin, enactor and President of VFW Post #5) offered an interesting discourse on the history of the American flag. The local JSA medical group presented each honoree a gift bag of commemorative items . Will Rogers said, “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” With humble gratitude for their service and heartfelt thanks for their presence, Freedom Plaza was proud to do just that. —Peggy Burgess
Cancer Support Group Meetings for this NEW group will be the first Monday and the second Thursday of each month. The exception will be Labor Day, no meeting. However, a September meeting will take place on September 11 and will host Susan Scherer, the CEO of RN CancerGuides, an association of RN’s with cancer experience. It should be highly informative for both cancer patients and their non-professional caregivers. Please stress the opportunity for non-professional caregivers to join us. I am one and I know the importance to getting the questions that are constantly on your mind, especially the big one, “Am I doing the right thing?” All meetings will take place at 1901 Haverford Ave (behind South Bay Hospital), Suite 106, and will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Again, except for holidays, the first Monday and the second Thursday of each month will be the meeting days. Anyone with questions can call 634-0496 or 634-7375 for more information. —Larry Brigant
ATHENA HOUSE is the only program in Florida specifically created to address the unique needs of homeless female veterans. These women have served our country in many capacities and are in need of our help. They are often victims of mental, sexual and substance abuse. Many have returned to suffer from domestic violence. Their duty and subsequent battles have resulted in a lack of training and educational skills required to obtain any meaningful employment. ATHENA HOUSE provides individual and group counseling, safe housing, training and other support services. Its primary goal is to return these women to permanent and safe independent living. ATHENA HOUSE, located in Ybor City, FL was originally a boarding house. It has been converted to a 16-bed transitional housing facility for female veterans operated by a non-profit program needing community support. To this end, once again, a benefit show is being presented with all proceeds going directly to ATHENA HOUSE. Two years ago, the original variety show was conceived by Pam Treadwell and Brenda Coman from Sun City Center. They organized and directed a production which received rave reviews after selling out in two weeks! The show netted a profit of over $5,000. Donations were also accepted of bed linens and ladies’ toiletries, items which were greatly needed and appreciated.
Once more there is a Call to Action! Because of the previous response, two shows will be offered. Place: Sun City Center Community Hall, 1910 South Pebble Beach Blvd. Sun City Center Entertainers: Manuel Escudera, pre-show music; Bill Barker, emcee; Nancy Burridge; Troy Allen Coman; John Cortese; Al Spatola; Charles Wirick; Hula Honeys; Jazzmatazz; Silver Tappers; Sunsations; TimeSteppers. Special performance - Brandon Ballet. Matinee performance at 2 p.m. Evening performance at 7 p.m. *Tickets: $10 pp. Tables set for eight (8). Napkins, glasses, ice and water will be provided. BYOB. All are welcome. *Due to parking restrictions at SCC Central Campus tickets will be sold at the Sun City Center Community Hall. Tickets sales will commence on Monday, September 22nd to Friday, October 3rd from 10 a.m. - noon. No tickets will be sold at the door. Urgently needed by Athena House: NEW sets of single/twin size sheets, towels all sizes, female toiletries and monetary donations will be accepted at the door.
Please come and support “OUR” Female Veterans!

Expanding Our Horizons No Autographs Please! Visit Winter at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium
By Kai Rambow Especially if you have young grandchildren, a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium can be a wonderful day trip. They will probably be very familiar with the star here, Winter. Winter, as you may recall, was rescued off the Atlantic coast in 2005 here in Florida. Just a calf, she lost her tail, and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium rehabilitated her. Winter made local news, then national news followed by a Disney movie, Dolphin Tale. A sequel, Dolphin Tale 2, is being released this month. Even though she’s a star, there’s no ego. She doesn’t sign autographs because, well, she can’t. However, you and your guests can get very close views. Since Winter cannot fend for herself in the wild, she is lovingly looked after at the Aquarium. While we were there, Winter received a muscle massage. Dolphins normally move their tails up and down. Because she does not have a tail, Winter moves by moving side to side like a fish. These unusual movements require massages to keep her healthy. Winter just looked happy to be getting the treatment. (No you can’t get a massage after the dolphin.)

There are a few other dolphins present, sea turtles, rays and otters. Aquarium is a bit misleading in the name. This facility’s primary focus is on rehabilitating marine life here in Florida. So, admission fees go to a good cause. The close views, interactions with staff make it a memorable, educational experience. A Few Tips 1. Drive time without traffic is one hour. Give yourself plenty of time. 2. We are spoiled with beach access here. Clearwater is very busy even on slow days. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. 3. You might want to have a meal at one of the many good restaurants. TripAdvisor is one web site that can help you find a suitable choice. 4. Build in some time to enjoy the sugar fine sand that made Clearwater Beach so popular. Clearwater Marine Aquarium 249 Windward Passage Clearwater, FL 33767 (727) 441-1790 Open every day of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Seniors: $19.95; Children (3-12) $16.95.
The Security Patrol has planned another baseball outing, this time for the Rays vs. Yankees baseball game on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Section 134 baseline seats are $20/each with bus transportation at $15/each. Tickets can be purchased at the Patrol Office at 1005 N. Pebble Beach Blvd. from Barbara Lewis, Betsy Burns or Bob Powers Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. If you are a baseball fan, this will be your last chance to see Derrick Jeter and a great chance for Rays fans to see them beat the Yankees! Deadline for ticket sales is September 8, so get your tickets early and reserve a seat on the bus, too. For more information, contact the Patrol Office 642-2020.
SECURITY PATROL RECEIVES DONATION Recently the volunteers of the Little General Store at Sun To w e r s , w h i c h s e r v e s i t s residents, made a donation to the Security Patrol. SUN CITY CENTER MEN’ S CHORUS BEGINS 51st SEASON
Meet Your Neighbors By Agnes Baker This month, a multi-talented lady is being introduced as the Neighbor you should run into, if you haven’t already! Meet Nancy Alguire - married to Dick, a proud alum of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a mechanical engineer. She has a daughter, Molly, sons Rob and Matt and 12 grandchildren. The Alguires are from Chicago and have lived in Sun City Center for eight years; moving here to join her elderly parents. Her father is still alive and strong at the great age of 96! She graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a BA degree, English major. With a versatile background in real estate and at the Office Business Center in Chicago where she served as office manager, leasing manager, vice president and coowner respectively, she quickly became involved with several Sun City Center organizations. Currently, she is the president of the Military Family Support Trust comprised of 10 Trustees, all volunteers from Freedom Plaza and Sun City Center. This is a non-profit organization serving active duty and retired military families in various ways through donations received from individuals and groups including designated grants from the Interfaith Council, Community Foundation, Publix, etc. This year, a total of $79,000 was awarded by MFST to 16 scholarship recipients, all outstanding seniors whose parents or grandparents served in the military. She is a member of MOWW (Military Officers of the World Wars) where she inter views potential candidates for the Youth Leadership Conference that she has attended for the last three years, and is currently serving as senior vice commander. On November 8,
MOWW is sponsoring the annual Military Ball in Community Hall on S. Pebble Beach Blvd. This will be a great patriotic event, and is open to all, with proceeds going to the Youth Leadership Fund. Nancy suggests calling Jim Warhol at 6331063 for ticket information. Nanc y ’s hobbi e s i nclu d e gardening—loves growing pesticidefree veggies (she is a member of Tillers and Toilers), and is enthused about all sports including softball, golf, pickleball and table tennis. Dick and Nancy raised a guide dog puppy for Southeastern Guide Dogs and currently own a rescue labmix named Ella who joins Nancy each evening for a stroll around the neighborhood. As busy as Nancy is, she still looks for those moments when she can take time to read and do some writing, two favorite activities. Oh, one more item— did we mention that she holds down a part-time position in a local attorney’s office? A busy lady??? Oh, Yeah!!
The Sun City Center Men’s Chorus will start rehearsal on Wednesday, September 3, for its 2014-15 season. The chorus has openings for a few new singers. The more than 30 members of the Chorus come from all walks of life and musical backgrounds. Some have sung most of their lives while other members first tested their vocal cords after retirement. The chorus is open to residents of Sun City Center and the surrounding area. It is under the direction of Mr. Lynn Herschfeld who is well known in the musical community. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday afternoon at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church located on Del Webb West, from 2 till 4 p.m. If you like to sing and wish to become a member of this fun-loving group, come check us out. Concetta C oncetta was found in a container in the shelter’s parking lot in September of 2013. She is quiet, but playful when the other cats and kittens get rambunctious. She loves to nap on the bed on the lanai, watching the squirrels and birds that frequent the back yard. She’s a little standoffish at first but will be happy to have a home to call her own. Please give her that forever home. As part of her adoption Concetta will be micro chipped. She is current on her vaccinations and has been spayed. EST. DOB: September 2, 2012.
Clover Clover is a petite Sheltie/Terrier mix with a beautiful brindle and white coat. She was abandoned near the Apollo Beach. THE COMPUTER CLUB HAS A NEW WEBSITE Thanks to help from member Bob Dealmeida, Ilona Merritt and Webmaster Bill Sherrick, your Board has finalized an update to the Computer Club’s website. Take a look at SCCCOMPUTERCLUB.ORG. The old website was designed nearly 20-years ago by WCI, the former developer of Sun City Center, so an update seemed due. The new look was designed to be more useful to our members and easier to navigate. Among its many new features is “Scaling,” which permits full and readable copy on any device—a PC, Tablet or Smartphone. We hope you will enjoy the new version. Your comments and suggestions are welcomed at THECOMPUTERCLUB@JUNO.COM. Future plans include the ability to register for classes on-line, pay for them with PayPal and let you know when a class is filled. Bob Dealmeida has agreed to be our new Webmaster. Bill Sherrick is retiring after some 15 years of keeping the site looking good and continually updated. Many thanks, Bill. We truly appreciate your many years of help with this project.

THE CREATION OF THE FIRST PLANT CELL Day 5, Chapter 13 Excerpt from a book that will be published at a later date
God said to Archie, “How are you progressing on the genome copying project?” “I am getting really close to finished,” Archie replied. “What have you been doing besides watching me?” “I have been assembling the final components for your new home. It is far more spacious than the tiny cell you used to reside within. I have your protein synthesizing factory (ribosome) a little larger and considerably more efficient. I have compartmented your home by running membranes linking your nuclear membrane with your new outer cell membrane. This way different areas of the cells can begin to isolate some of the substances you will produce from one another. This becomes increasingly important as individual cells begin to aggregate and become multi-celled organisms.” “Archie, have you finished your copying project yet?” God asked. “Yes, Sir, I just finished,” Archie answered. “I now have exactly a thousand copies of my circular genome, each attached to my nuclear membrane, just like You asked. Is there anything else You want me to do at this time?” “Your work is done for the moment,” God said. “I am going to break those little genomes right at their point of attachment and join the sticky ends to one another to form a more linear sequence of DNA, which will come to be known as a chromosome. I will also be punching holes into your membrane so the RNA messages you produce can find their way to the protein synthesizing factories out in the cytoplasm. Your home will be finished momentarily, as all the work for the final two components was previously created, thanks to the design of Phyllis and Renaldo. All I have left to do is to convince them that you won’t devour them.” God had chosen the site for the construction of His first super-sized cell very well. It was midway between the communities where Phyllis and Renaldo resided. The construction project was so large it was impossible to miss. Curiosity drew both Renaldo and Phyllis toward the construction site, but both carefully maintained a safe distance between themselves and the monster cell. Both were tense and neither noticed the other until they accidently bumped into each other as they swam around the humongous cell. Both were startled and began to flee before realizing what had just happened. They stopped in their tracks and reversed course, coming very near one another before daring to speak. “What is that thing?” Renaldo stammered in a hushed tone. “I don’t know, but I find it very scary,” Phyllis quietly responded. Then they both heard the voice of God. “There is no need to whisper.
This is not a monster; it is Sam, My super-sized cell. He will never hurt anyone, but I need both of you to enter this cell in order to make it complete.” Phyllis said, “Well, it looks like a monster that is about ready to devour me. I have been swimming around this monster for a while now and never saw a welcoming door of any kind or heard a voice inviting me to enter. Renaldo, did you see a door or hear an inviting voice?” Renaldo started to speak, but was cut off by God. “Phyllis, you heard My voice. I assure you the last thing I want is to see you hurt in any way. I poured some of My best effort into creating you and now I am asking you to claim My new super cell as your own private castle. I could use any of the other millions of sisters back in your community, but they selected you as their representative for the convention, because you were their brightest and best. They were right and I want to use only the brightest and best for the next step in My creation story. All I am asking is for you to place your trust in Me. If you don’t want to enter the cell, I won’t force you inside. I will just send you home and retrieve one of your more courageous sisters to take your place in the castle.” Phyllis knew God was right. Several of her sisters had been envious of her opportunity to attend the convention. She was certain Phoebe, the designated convention alternate, would jump at the chance to replace her in a heartbeat. This thought prompted her to ask God, “What am I supposed to do if I decide to accept your offer?” God replied, “Your task is simple. Just draw close enough to touch its smooth membrane. It will respond to your touch by wrapping you in its membrane while drawing you inside. Once you enter your castle, I would like you to invite Renaldo to join you. Have you noticed how quiet he has been so far? I think he may be an even bigger coward than you.” Phyllis remained a bit apprehensive as she swam close to the super cell. She tentatively reached out to touch the big guy once she was near enough. The membrane was smooth and warm. The touch turned into a gentle caress, which the big guy carefully responded to as he gradually enveloped her and drew her inside. Phyllis looked around her spacious accommodations as soon as she was settled. She quickly declared, “This place is great and gives me a new sense of security. I would be happy to spend the rest of my life in this castle. It is my fortress and I would be delighted to share it with Renaldo. God, thanks for persuading me to take a chance.” Renaldo finally entered the conversation. “I prefer to think of

myself as being pretty smart, rather than as a coward. I could see the sun shining down both on Phyllis and on the big guy I believe you called Sam, so I was pretty sure she would be fine once she was inside. I no longer have to worry about getting either sugar or the oxygen I need to grow, since she is now there to provide nourishment for me. I would probably have starved to death if she were not present, so I will no longer hesitate to join Phyllis on the inside.” Renaldo promptly swam right up to the big guy, bumped into his membrane and was drawn inside just like Phyllis. God then said, “Now that you three are all together in my first large cell, I am changing all your names. Phyllis, from now on you will be known as a chloroplast. Renaldo,
you will be called a mitochondria. Archie, you will simply be known as the nucleus controlling this cell. Both Phyllis and Renaldo remain alive and will continue to grow and divide as they did prior to joining forces inside the cell. Archie, you will regulate the rate of reproduction for both these new structures within My new super cell and the timing for super cell division. We will use all those extra copies of your genome to assemble a vast arsenal of new molecules through mutation. They are the key to formation of a whole new world of green plants. You are My very first masterpiece and you now have the potential, with My assistance, to produce many more masterpieces as the world moves forward.” —Bill Ferron

THE PHOENIX ART GROUP 2014
During September and October the Art Club in Sun City Center will feature the Phoenix Art Group in its Art Gallery Exhibit. The Phoenix Group traditionally exhibits for two months. This year they will feature two different exhibits. During September the members will feature two of their chosen works of art for display, then change the display to an all black and white exhibit for the month of October. The September exhibit will have its opening on Wednesday, September 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Art Room Gallery. This display will be up through September 29. The black and white show will begin on Wednesday, October 1, with an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served at both open houses. In 1978 and 1979 some Sun City Center Art Club members regularly painted together in the Art Room on Thursday afternoons. Discussion among them led to the idea of becoming a “group” to share experiences and uphold certain standards for presentation of their work. They were formed as the “Paleteers.” The Palateers disbanded in 1993 due to some controversy. In March of 1994, the Phoenix rose out of the flames of controversy and reformed with the name “The Phoenix.”
The Phoenix carries on the same fine tradition of high standards. It consists of highly qualified artists and those who have been very active in the Art Club. They all have the best regards for Art Club in Sun City Center, and they all are members of the SCC artist club. The Phoenix is limited to 20 members due to their meeting in members’ homes once a month.New members are added by invitation only. Current members are: Jean Beardsley, Theresa Buck, Nancy Cooper, Jeanne Danek, Shirley Engle, Audrey Erickson, Robi Jackson, Claire Jacobs, Ellen Klein, Virginia Laudano, Kristine Littrell, Marsha Lucidi, Bev Majewski, Dolores Phelps, Dee Sleziak, Mel Solochek, Mary Underwood, Carole Wehrle, Jeanie Will, and Barbara Wurth. Both Shirley Engle and Audrey Erickson were charter members. — Melvin Solochek

Silver Osprey Squadron Prepares for New Season of Activities in 2014-2015
Military Affairs
If you have been involved in military aviation as an aviator, flight crew member or ground support or if you are just interested in military aviation you should look into the Sun City Center chapter of the Association of Naval Aviation, the Silver Osprey Squadron. The Silver Osprey Squadron has been part of Sun City Center for a number of years and membership is open to anyone who has an interest in Military Aviation. We meet once each month during the fall, winter and spring of each year. Meetings are held on the 2nd Friday of the month at the Plaza Club located at Freedom Plaza. Our goal is to bring interesting speakers to Sun City Center who can provide both a historical and contemporary perspective on topics relating to military aviation activities. During this past year we featured a Marine Aviator, Major Fred Stankovich, who flew the A-4 Sky Hawk in the #2 wing position with the 1978-81 Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team. In addition, we were fortunate to host Special Agent Robert Robbins of the DEA who provided some interesting detail on current drug intervention activities being carried out from the Tampa Bay area. Last year we made a special attempt to attract active duty military officers from local commands
who were able to provide current updates on their activities. As a result, we enjoyed the presentation of Captain Richard Lorenzen, USCG, the current Commanding Officer of the USCG Air Station in Clearwater, FL. Captain provided an overview of the Coast Guard aviation activities in the area including their peripheral tie-in with the DEA operations. We also featured the Base Commander, Six Air Mobility Command at MacDill AFB in Tampa. COL Scott DeThomas, USAF provide the group with a comprehensive overview of the activities of both the base activities the units they support, including their Tanker squadron. Another activity duty visitor was COL Richard Jordan, USMC who represented USCENTCOM with an excellent presentation on their activities. Our group has also been quite interested in the progress of the JSF-35 program. We received a briefing from our own Captain Dick Petrucci, USN (retired) during one of our luncheons. Dick brought us up to date on the status of the aircraft production and testing. At our next luncheon we were privileged to hear from Captain Frank Naylor, USN, Executive Officer of the Naval Air Warfare Center, Training Systems Division, Orlando, FL who discussed his Command’s work on both Shipboard and Aircraft simulators, including the work on the flight training simulator being used with new JSF-35. The Silver Ospreys also try to have at least one field trip each year. Our last two years included a trip to Fantasy of Flight and a VIP seat at the Mac Dill “Air Fest” rehearsal last spring featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. We are looking forward to a great 2014-2015 season. We will be starting off the year with a
The Blue Angels - 1978 historical look at a secret squadron of P2V aircraft that flew secret missions during Vietnam for our October meeting. We will follow in November with a presentation by Captain Erik Etz, USN, the new, Executive Officer of the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division, Orlando, FL, who, prior to his current assignment was involved in the JSF-35 testing program at the Naval Aviation Test Center at PAX River Naval Air Station. We also plan to bring other active duty personnel again this year from USCENTCOM, MacDill AFB and the USCG Air Station Clearwater as well as a presentation or two from our own members who have special expertise in a number of aviation related areas. We will also plan at least one field trip, T.B.A. If you would like to become a member of the Silver Osprey or just get on our email notification list please let us know. Our luncheon meetings are open to the public. You may contact us at silverosprey@yahoo.com or call Roger Kennicutt, CDR, USN(retired), 813-260-3221.

The Mission Board and Women’s Fellowship of United Community Church Donates to The Hope Fund for Children
In April, The Hope Fund was chosen as The Mission of the Month at The United Community Church of Sun City Center with a donation of $2,135 that was given by church members at a special collection. The Hope Fund thanks the Mission Board for this donation. The money will be used by The Hope Fund for financial aid to assist families who send their children to The Hope Fund’s afterschool programs at Bethune Park in Wimauma. Most families that send their children to the Park are lowincome and cannot afford the full cost of tuition. The Hope Fund sponsors many programs at Bethune Park that enhance the children’s lives, such as mentoring and tutoring, reading classes, a running program to show the importance of exercise, and an art class to emphasize creativity. There is a Kids’ Cafe that serves healthy snacks, and a new chess class has
been formed. Woodworking is a new program. The children also receive information on nutrition, family life and first aid. There are sex and drug education classes for the older children. The children who attend the after-school programs are in a nurturing environment and are with adults who really care about them. Also, recently, The Women’s Fellowship of United Community Church, under the leadership of Judy Stevens and Jan Kopischke, held a rummage sale and raised $1,500, which was donated to The Hope Fund. Thank you. If you are i nt e re s t e d i n volunteering to help with the children, or if you wish to make a tax deductible contribution or if you just want information, call Carla Miles at 634-4268. Further information about The Hope Fund may also be found at www.the-hope-fund.org.

Emergency Squad celebrates its 50th Anniversary
Fifty years ago, some newly-transplanted Sun City Center residents had the foresight to put together a team of first-aiders to assist its growing populace. Realizing that they were far from local health services and resources, the Sun City Center Volunteer Emergency Squad was born. In the 50 years since its birth, the Squad has grown to four ambulances, two wheelchair vans and two buildings – our Squad station and our training center. In the winter, we number about 400 volunteers; we have about 260 summer volunteers. This year we will be celebrating our Golden Anniversary in October with four events. Our first event will be an Open House with a speaker from LifePath Hospice. The Men’s Club will be hosting its annual Ice Cream Social honoring local EMS services including Fire/Rescue and South Bay Hospital. We will be having a 50/60s dance as a fundraiser for the Squad. And our last event will be a community picnic at Kings Point on Halloween. Details below – please save the dates! Saturday Oct. 4 “All you wanted to know about Hospice” 11 a.m. Squad Training Building, Pebble Beach Coffee and cookies Thursday October 9 Men’s Club Ice Cream Social 1 – 4 p.m. South Community Hall, Pebble Beach Sunday October 19 50’s/60’s Dance 5:30 -10 p.m. Borini Theater, King’s Point $10 ticket Friday Oct. 31 Community Picnic 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food Truck event In connection with our October celebrations, the Squad is preparing a 50th Anniversary Journal. If you wish to be included, please contact Past Chief Noreen Schramm at 917-239-3903 or email noreens@scc-ems.us. Deadline for inclusion is September 15, 2014.
SELLERS SOUGHT for SENIOR SELLERS SALE Want to sell “stuff ” you no longer can use? Sun City Center area residents will have an opportunity to rent a table at a Senior Sellers Sale at the SCC Chamber of Commerce meeting room on October 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nell and Jim Taze, who have volunteered as the organizing team, said the Chamber is providing the space for this public event as a community service. Chamber Executive Director Dana Ditmar and Debbie Caneen, president of the Board of the Chamber are assisting them in an advisory role. Because space is limited, only 26 tables (10 ft. long) will be available for $20 each. This is not a fundraiser, although any net proceeds after expenses of advertising, signs, cleanup, etc. will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Two sellers can share a table if they wish. Professional buyers and collectors from surrounding areas will be invited to attend. Nell Taze is excited about the event. “Most of us have collectibles, etc. sitting around the house or garage that we have treasured over the years. Our children don’t want them and we have limited display or storage space. This is an opportunity to sell them to others,” she said. Please direct inquiries about table reservations and further details to the Tazes at 505-7080.

The Purple Butterflies put on a style show with clothes from The Rose Boutique and Bon Worth. After a luncheon consisting of soup and a variety of sandwiches prepared by Mary Stewart, the Butterflies “flitted” around the room showing off their various outfits. The variety of outfits was outstanding and the gals in the audience had a good time watching their “sisters” strut their stuff.

HELPFUL HINTS for submitting articles/pictures to newsofscc.ca@gmail.com
The News of Sun City Center
1. When typing an article, use only one space between sentences. 2. Please do not put returns in the middle of a sentence. The return should only be used at the end of a paragraph. 3. I prefer that you write your article in a Word program and attach it to the email along with any photos. 4. When submitting a photo, it should not be “reduced” from its original size. Attach the photo in the email in .jpg format. 5. To name a file, leave out characters such as punctuation marks (e.g. “ , . # ? / ( ) & ‘). Please put your club name and/or topic as your filename. It assists me in locating the file if I need to go back to it. 6. Submit via email whenever possible. If not possible, deliver your article/pictures to the CA office where The NEWS has a mailbox; or you can put it through the door slot at the newsroom (next to the Palm Room in Old Town Hall). 7. When listing a time, please use the following format: 2 p.m. or 1-3 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. 8.
