The Weather Was Hot, But The Party Was “Cool”

By Diane M. Loeffler Sun City C enter’s C ommunity Association hosted some really cool activities on July 4. CA members and their guests could pull up a chair or a golf cart and listen to live entertainment at the gazebo. Food and refreshments were available for purchase and “free”

ice cream was served using some of the proceeds from the two holiday breakfasts hosted by the Community Association. Perhaps the “coolest” place to be was the pool. Residents and their guests, including grandchildren and great grandchildren, relaxed and played in the water. Many residents participated in karaoke. Patriotic songs were the biggest hit. Sometimes swimmers joined in with the singing.

3Dom prepares to entertain Sun City Residents. This band also performed at FunFest and can be seen at Circles Restaurant in Apollo Beach.

NOTE: Community Leaders Meetings are not held in August. Agendas for the monthly Board Meetings will be posted on Official Bulletin Board in the Atrium the Monday before and on the CA website (www.suncitycenter.org – under “Residents” – Upcoming Meeting Agendas). They will also be sent via “What’s New in the CA” email. Every Wednesday: Orientation for new members in the Board Room in the CA office starting at 1 p.m. sharp.

Book Nook, What’s That?

By Paula Lickfeldt You may have noticed little “book boxes” taking up residence around Sun City Center. What are they? Where did they come from? Let’s find out! Todd Bol decided he wanted to honor his mother, who had been a librarian and an avid reader, by making as many books as possible, available to the public, free of charge. He started the “Little Free Libraries.” At the time he passed away, at age 62, there were 70,000 worldwide. About five years ago, Andrea Peterson saw one and thought that might be a nice thing for SCC. Sometime later, her neighbor Ann Fenimore saw one and told Andrea that they should put one up. The two women decided it was time for SCC to have some “Little Free Libraries.”

By Diane M. Loeffler SCC Community Hall was a sea of red, white and blue on July 4. The decorations, volunteers, and attendees were all decked out in our nation’s colors. Co-chairs Floyd and Brenda Curvin say, “We had 150 awesome volunteers who served 1,248 people.” If you were there, you had the opportunity to enjoy a great breakfast, see displays from the History Society, meet new people, and enjoy patriotic music. Dozens of people commented on the patriotic songs played loud enough to hear yet quiet enough not to interfere with conversations. Organ and Keyboard Club President, Barbara Sue Carline says, “It was our pleasure playing patriotic music for the CA Breakfast. We loved every note.” Mark your 2020 calendars for next year’s Fourth of July Breakfast. You will be glad you did.

Sun City Center resident Janice Huss (seated at far right wearing a stars and stripes shirt), also known as Grandma, brought her extended family to the breakfast including “Great Grandma” Mary Masters (seated at the far left).

Tracey Fraser joined her parents, Cricket and Bruce Fraser, at the breakfast. Ashton didn’t try any of the food, but his big brother Caleb enjoyed his toast!

Former CA Director and Officer Jim Schwartz served coffee to many special people including this birthday girl, K.C. Chilton and her husband, Steve.

Community Association President Sam Sudman and Bruce Fraser were among those serving breakfast. Grandson Caleb Fraser served up smiles.

APPLICATIONS FOR DIRECTOR

Trail Blazing By John Lampkin

Pigeons get a bad rap. In common parlance, pigeon means “easy scam target” and a stool pigeon is a “singing rat” in the mob. They became forever vilified in 1966 when NYC Parks Commissioner Thomas P.F. Hoving called them “rats with wings.” The catchy term caught on and persists today as part of our lexicon. In Sun City Center, we don’t have statues for them to “whitewash” and no public park with benches full of popcorn tossers, so for the most part, our pigeons, aka rock doves aka rock pigeons, are remarkably well-behaved on our Nature Trails; and they can easily be admired perched on power lines throughout our community. Yes, admired, for they are not only beautiful but highly intelligent and have been the subject of many experiments in animal cognition. Many messenger pigeons have received Medals of Honor for their heroic service in wartime, saving many American lives. Originally, they crossed the Atlantic with early settlers, but unlike some other introduced species such as House Sparrows, they don’t have much of an impact on our native species, according to Audubon’s website. The Rock Pigeon is the world’s oldest domesticated bird, and because of more than 5000 years of selective breeding, a wide variety of plumages fly among us. If one takes the time to look without prejudice, the plumage in sunlight can be stunning and together with the eye and red feet, it’s a handsome package indeed. Rats with wings? Nope. The Nature Trails is an ongoing project of the SCC Audubon Club in cooperation with the SCC CA. The trailhead is located opposite North Lake on Del Webb West between Vincennes and Seton Hall. Join us for interpretive walks on the first Tuesday of the month at 9 am.

WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE CA OFFICE ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2019 There are three positions open for three-year terms January 2, 2020 – January 4, 2023 Completed applications must be returned to the CA office by 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2019

Cool in the Pool; Hot on the Airwaves

By Kai Rambow Several SCC residents came out for the first pool party of the season. The water volleyball club said they would be there and they not only showed up but had their usual full complement of players. While many played in the water, another group of residents was hard at work just around the corner. The amateur radio club participated in a two-day field day. Twenty-six members took turns contacting 450 other radio stations across the US and Canada. The Maui Amateur Radio club, 4,625 miles away in Hawaii, was the farthest station contacted. Members tested Morse code, digital modes and voice messages. Across the network. You may recall several members helped transmit messages after Hurricane Maria knocked out most communication in Puerto Rico.

Several residents just cooled in the pool, but the water volleyball club played a full game.

Ashton Fraser had such a good time at Funfest he came back for Cool in the Pool.

Members of the amateur (ham) radio club set up in several locations to carry out two days of field tests.

Fitness Corner

A common complaint of seniors is tight, aching calves and tender, painful feet. These symptoms are often the result of poor circulation to the lower extremities. The SCC Fitness Center features a revolving drum style device for massaging calves and feet. This piece of equipment utilizes contoured wooden rollers to relax and stimulate circulation to these sensitive areas. Pressing the legs or feet down on the revolving rollers will increase the intensity of the massage. Best results are achieved by massaging warm muscles after a workout. Massaging these areas can be very relaxing, so be aware of others who may be waiting to use this device. Five minutes of massage time is adequate. The SCC Fitness Center is located on North Course Lane next to the Atrium building and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Statement of Purpose

The Sun City Center Community Association serves the residents of Sun City Center by providing assistance for the elderly, assistance and essential services to tax exempt entities, and operates in lieu of a municipal government, thereby lessening the burdens of government (Hillsborough County, Florida).

July Board Meeting: Resignations, Repairs, Rentals, and Upcoming Events President’s Report

By Sam Sudman, CA President The BOD is one shy as a result of the resignation of Marilyn Coté-Miller. From day one she jumped in and took on the job head on. She made many friends along the way. Sadly, though, for personal reasons she could not continue. We wish Marilyn well and thank her for stepping up. Sun City Center Connects thanks you. The BOD will not fill this position but will wait until December when the membership can vote on the candidates. Applications for Director will be available on August 21 and must be returned by 3 p.m. on October 2. I have been informed by Brigitt Lewis that she is resigning her position as Chairperson of the Elections Committee effective immediately. Barbara Gingrich, a former co-chair of the Election Committee has agreed to step up to help the CA. Over the past few months, I have been writing and talking about the increase in rental properties within the CA geographic boundaries and the disregard shown by the owners of those properties for the age overlay. Under-age adults are not permitted to reside in a home without an adult 55 or over. Also, children under 18 may only visit for 30 days per year. The CA is responsible for enforcing the age overlay. We recently filed a lawsuit to have the occupants of one rental property evicted. The costs of this action will be borne by the property owners and/or rental agents. A lien is filed against the property so that it will not sell unless the full amount is paid. In this case, that figure approaches $10,000. We will continue to pursue abuses aggressively. Any association that does not have restrictions in its documents that can control rentals should consider having the wording added to their documents to enable the CA to enforce the age overlay. Contact me and I will put you in touch with the Covenants and Restrictions Committee.

SCCCA Offers Free Entertainment to Members in August

The SCCCA has been busy planning a few free events for August, for its Community Association members. On August 10, there will be a pool party featuring local musician Marc Chamberlin. The café will offer food and drink specials, and the water volleyball club will be there to lead the games. There will be cornhole games under the oak tree near the bandstand. This event will run from 1-4 p.m. There will be another Bandstand concert on Thursday August 22 featuring the “Nunes at Night” Band. In addition, the SCC Barbershop Quartet, “Vocappella” will entertain from 5:45 to 6 p.m. Nunes at Night will start at 6 and run until 7:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or come in your golf cart for an evening of great entertainment. Once again, the popular Chiefs Chill Out Ice Cream Truck will be there offering custard treats for sale. Sun City Center Community Association members are invited to attend these events, and should be sure to bring their membership card. Guest passes are available at the Office for $2 for non-SCCCA members.

New Pool Attendant

Welcome, Paul Kersey, our newest pool attendant. He and his supervisor, Katie Rathke, were both on duty during our Fourth of July party.

By Diane M. Loeffler July’s Community Association meeting began with the resignation of Marilyn Cote-Miller. President Sam Sudman says, “We wish her well. We are not filling her position since it is so close to the end of the term.” After approving Miller’s resignation, the board certified that Treasurer, Dave Birkett, will be taking on Miller’s duties as corporate secretary. There are some opportunities for volunteers. Brigitt Lewis resigned from FunFest and the Election Committee. Floyd and Brenda Curvin will be resigning from chairing the two holiday breakfasts (July and December) after the December breakfast. Anyone who volunteers for one of these positions will have experienced people willing to help them. The board has been working through the county and their code procedures to remedy a situation where children have lived in Sun City Center for longer than the 30-day limit. So far, our Community A ssociation’s legal fees are around $10,000. If the property owner does not reimburse the Community Association, there will be a lien put on their property. Sudman says, “We have no problems with renters as long as they are of age.” The construction on SR-674 is starting far later than scheduled due to problems with storm water and other pipes on the north side of the highway making it necessary that new pipes be ordered. Another project, the handicap accessible crossing on North Pebble Beach, is running late due to the rain. Treasurer Dave Birkett reported a monthly total of 40 home sales. The previous month there were 58. The yearly average is 43, more than the number needed to keep our budget healthy. In new business, a contract was approved for concrete edging on Lawn Bowling Courts 2 and 3 using money from the replacement fund budget. The board also approved re-paving the Cherry Hills entrance to Central Campus and the replacement of the Atrium roof. The current roof is the original roof for the structure. When it is replaced, the air conditioning units will need to be removed. Re-installing them will

be a separate expense. In addition to the roofing project, there will be asphalt and landscaping projects underway during the summer on both our central and south campuses. Community manager, Lyn Reitz says, “If an area is roped or coned off, please stay out of that area for your safety.”

Bring Your ID

Please remember to have your Community Association identification with you whenever you are attending events, going to clubs, and using the pool or fitness equipment. If you have a problem remembering your ID, you may wish to either purchase an additional ID or take a photo of it with your phone. Just make sure that your photo shows the current year’s sticker. Also, remember to buy guest passes when you bring along someone who does not belong to the CA. You can purchase guest passes at the CA office or at the Fitness Center.

Meet your Neighbor - Don ‘Nibbles’ Churchill

By Ilona Merritt All the world loves a clown, and Sun City Center is fortunate to have Nibbles. Don moved with his wife, Janice, to SCC in 1999. Don’s career was in industrial sales. He and Janice in 1976 moved from Massachusetts to Jackson, Mississippi. Their children were 7, 9, and 11 years old; and this was quite a change for them and a huge learning experience. In 1984, his work took him to New Orleans “to that Sinful place,” as his Jackson Friends called it. Actually, Don said the folks there were quite friendly, and another new experience for Don and his family. They were flooded out twice when, in 24 hours, 18 inches of rain came down. Don and Janice were always involved with their children’s activities and did volunteer work. The children played soccer, and when Don became aware that there was a shortage of referees, he attended a newly set-up school to become a referee. At 55 he was diagnosed with melanoma. Janice was a nurse, and found him an excellent Doctor. At 56 he was grandfathered into his company’s retirement program. They moved to SCC with focus on enjoying golf and joined the North Course and he was active with the Men’s Golf Club. He is now a member of Caloosa Golf Club. His father had a strong interest in genealogy and wrote everything by hand. Upon moving to SCC, Don joined the Genealogy Club and learned a lot from Dottie Smiley. He attended her class and soon converted his father’s notes into the computer. He then took up teaching genealogy, became President twice and still works at finding his roots. When the GermanAmerican Club was formed, he not only became a member he also took on the job as Biermeister, and for many years he organized a group of friends and in true German fashion they emptied many kegs of beer at the German-American Clubs annual Oktoberfest. He also participated in many of the fun skits which were performed at the various club functions. Don decided to join the Shriners and choose to become a clown. So, off to Plymouth, Mass. to clown school. This is an ongoing program to teach not only the basics of being a clown, but they also have ongoing training programs. As Nibbles, he has an invisible dog on a leash who goes everywhere with him. You can see him visiting people in hospitals, nursing homes, elder

care, and parades. Children love him when he comes to their parties. He clowns around at the Kiwanis Christmas Party for Children in July and you can always see him at the Shriners Children’s Christmas Party, held every year for children from Wimauma schools first graders at the Community Hall. Don considers himself fortunate to have survived cancer, and with Janice, they love life in Sun City Center and give gladly to the community of their time and talents. Thank you to Don and Janice.

Book continued from page 1. They spoke with their neighbor Richard Kelley, he was able to get plans, and he built one for each of the gals. The Book Nooks are standing proudly in front of Andrea’s house and Ann’s house on Fordham Street. Several others have “popped” up around SCC. Books are inside the Nook. You may borrow a book and return it or keep it. You may drop off books for others to read. Just put the donated books in the box. The number of books and their titles change quickly. Andrea says it is “unbelievable” how much activity there is around the book nooks. If you would be interested in having a book nook in front of your house, you can talk to someone at the Sawdust Engineers. I have been told that they have plans and, for a donation to the club, someone will make one for you. What a wonderful way for people to pass books around for others to read. Good job Andrea and Ann!

The News of Sun City Center

Tidbits from the Vault: Fun in the Sun in Early SCC

By Cathy Meyerhoff, Sun City Center History Society The list of outdoor activities available in Sun City Center today is a long one. Golf, lawn bowling, softball, tennis, swimming, horseshoes, and croquet are among the many sports in which residents may participate. Perusing the history center files revealed that many of these same pastimes attracted the people who moved here in the early 1960s. Del Webb’s 1963 promotional brochure advertised a golf course “which is complete even to a full-time ‘pro’”. It also boasted of a Rivierasized pool with its own sunning terrace and bathhouse. Shuffleboard and lawn bowling, a softball park and putting green are also mentioned. Several recreational opportunities were also marketed that had disappeared from Webb’s advertising by 1967. In the 1963 promotion, prospective residents learned that “Sun City also has its own exclusive beach just 6.8 miles west between a blue lagoon and the waters

of Tampa Bay.” This would be at today’s Bahia Beach. Fishing was also a big selling point. A new resident might become a member of Sun City’s ‘river club’ and utilize Sun City’s exclusive Boating and Fishing Marina. The marina was located on Webb property on the Little Manatee River. Fishing was also available on Sun City’s private fishing lake, now Swan Lake. A fishing pier was located on a small beach near what is now the Arts and Crafts Building. The lake was stocked with bass. For those with a green thumb or an agricultural interest the Sun City Agricultural Center existed for the exclusive use of Sun City residents. A predecessor of today’s Tillers and Toilers, the center also had a pasture next door. The ’63 brochure mentioned a man grooming a calf that he planned to enter in the State Fair.

A Quiet Getaway at Wakulla Springs State Park

By Diane M. Loeffler If you would like to get away for a few days, but don’t want to have to travel far, Wakulla Springs State Park may be the place for you. The park is located south of Tallahassee, about a five-hour drive from Sun City Center. The main feature of the park is a spring that is the source of the Wakulla River. If you are warm-blooded enough to enjoy swimming in 69-degree water, you can wade into the water or jump from the first or second level of the diving platform. For the rest of us, the most pleasant way to enjoy the springs is to take an hour-long boat tour on the river. The dockside ranger station opens at 9:30 a.m. for anyone who wishes to purchase a ticket. The hour-long boat tours run from 9:40 to 5 p.m. The 9:40 tour is the best if you want to see birds, turtles, alligators and other creatures at their most active time. On cooler days, manatees can be easily seen through the surprisingly clear water. Happily,

Wakulla Springs feeds this entire river. The boat tour will take you down one mile of the river. The rest of the park’s river is not traveled by tour boats in order to leave the wildlife undisturbed. Photo by John Loeffler.

the boats are usually not very full at 9:40 a.m., so you can move around for the best views. Thanks to the Friends of Wakulla Springs, two of the tour boats are powered by electric motors. Those two boats have rooftop solar panels to charge the batteries. The ride is very quiet

Mike Rowe Gives Back to Local Gold Star Mother

Jason Allred of Sunray Marine gave me this photo. Along the front edge of the Corregidor, you can see Mike Rowe’s mother and father and Kelly Kowall. Behind Kowall is Mike Rowe with his hand raised.

By Diane M. Loeffler Mike Rowe brought his cameramen and sound crew to My Warrior’s Place in Ruskin. Kelly Kowall, the founder and president of My Warrior’s Place (MWP), knew cameramen were coming, but she had no idea that she would be on a reality show with Mike Rowe. Earlier, Kowall was contacted by a woman who said she represented producers who were going to be in Florida and who were thinking about making a documentary film about My Warrior’s Place “while they were

down there anyway,” would she be interested? Kowall thought it was a “rinky dink thing” but any publicity for the cause would be worth her time. So, when they Skyped her, she answered the questions and set aside some time to take the group on a tour. The woman actually represented Returning the Favor. allowing you to hear the songs of the birds. If you like to walk, there are walkways all around the lodge. At the lodge front desk you can pick up a map of the six mile (one way) Sally Ward Trail and the nine-tenths of a mile Hammock Spur Trail. Some sections of

the trail are raised wooden walkways. However, most of the path is on uneven ground with lots of exposed roots. If you wish to do more walking, you may wish to drive to the Wakulla Forest Trail or the trails in St. Mark’s State Wildlife Reserve. While there, you can visit St. Mark’s Lighthouse and Visitor’s Center. Want to stay at the Lodge at Wakulla Springs? This charming building was constructed in 1937 and is on the register of Historic Hotels. Once you step inside, you will see a lovely fireplace and various seating areas around the huge lobby. If you are there between 4 and 7 p.m. on most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you will also be treated to a pianist performing. When admiring all of the artistic touches, be sure to look down at the marble floors and up at the 16-foot-tall ceiling. The cypress ceiling is adorned with paintings by Mr. Piplack, a man who was also the last court painter for Kaiser Wilhelm.

Jupiter, Loggerhead Turtle, Gets Local Help

By Kai Rambow Most patients get medical checkups with privacy. Not so for Jupiter, a loggerhead turtle getting rehabilitation treatment from the Florida Aquarium. The media watched as Jupiter was looked over by a veterinarian and two biologists. Jupiter was “cold-stunned,” meaning the turtle was exposed too long to cold water temperatures. The staff at the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center helped the turtle recover and

put on weight. They are now preparing Jupiter for a release back into the Atlantic Ocean in Volusia County, where the turtle was found. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center is located in Apollo Beach. While part of the Florida Aquarium, it is not open to the public. This new facility, opened earlier this year, has already helped fourteen turtles. The limited facilities in Tampa can only handle eight turtles a year.

One of six green turtles being helped at the center. The new center has already helped 14 turtles this year, far exceeding the maximum capacity of eight turtles a year in Tampa.

The Editor’s Corner

Rainy Day Imagination

By E. Adam Porter, Editor “The night was sultry.” That line, played for laughs in the silly and suspenseful 1987 Hitchcock sendup, Throw Momma From the Train, is the solution to a dilemma Billy Crystal’s character struggles with the entire movie: how to find the perfect words to begin his book. In the film, directed by Danny DeVito, Crystal is a junior college creative writing professor trying to make it as a commercial fiction author. He would have already hit the big time, but his scheming ex-wife stole his magnum opus and published it herself, earning millions and being invited on talk shows to taunt her ex and tout her counterfeit “genius.” When that thieving ex-wife, played with brilliant malevolence by Kate Mulgrew, goes missing and is presumed murdered, Crystal is, of course, the prime suspect. Unfortunately, the poor sap was passed out on the beach at the time, so goodbye alibi. The first time I saw this movie, as an aspiring professional writer, it latched onto me and became a favorite, not just for the meta plot about how, if you’re not careful, writer’s block can take over your life, but also for the spot-on performances, and the obvious nods to Sir Alfred’s masterpieces Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, and Dial M for Murder. It’s a fun movie I may just watch again today, because, speaking of ‘sultry,’ it’s been pretty doggone sultry around here lately. Hot and wet and rainy, day after day after blessed day. As the ol’ rhyme goes, “April showers bring May flowers…” But, here in the Sometimes Sunshine State, it’s those July and August showers you have to worry about. Those angry storms, flung across the peninsula by warm gulf waters nearly every afternoon, bring lighting, wind, and flooding that

can turn streets into streams and tree limbs into gravity-powered javelins. Baseball games are rained out, roads become waterlogged demolition derbies, and only the most addled souls brave the beaches. In our house, being stuck inside in the summer time means the kids and the dogs are stuck inside too. I’ve heard from a few of you who have visiting grandkids and say the same. You can’t visit the theme parks and zoos, or go puddle hopping when the thunder’s booming from horizon to horizon and the sky looks like nuclear winter. When it gets that dark, at the first sign of thunder, my boys — who in their short lives have already lived through two hurricanes and multiple tornados — go into Scout mode, gathering up everything we might need in case of a power outage. LED lanterns are collected from cabinets, under couches, and from bedroom sheet forts and deposited on the dining table. Batteries are checked, and spares are counted. Board games and decks of cards join the lanterns, followed by snacks and Bluetooth speakers for music and news if the storm gets really bad. Then, whether or not the power goes out, the TV goes off. Time for some fun detached from what we grew up calling the “idiot box,” and folks today are calling “screen time.” My crafty bride teaches the boys how to make Play-Doh, mix paint colors, and tie-dye shirts. I show them how to design forts and make fleets of paper airplanes. We have competitions for distance and flight time until the dogs join in the game, and too many planes fail to reach their destinations. The kids build great Lego contraptions and invite us into their world, where little yellow guys explore space or trudge through the jungle, or giant robots save the earth from equally mammoth monsters. Then out comes the “dress up box,” and we are transformed into pirates, following a map of buried treasure I sketched on one of the crumpled paper airplanes. Once the treasure is secured, we read books, tell stories, and play what the boys think of as “bored games.” Eventually, we break out the box of inch-tall hero miniatures and have grand

adventures defeating monsters, saving townsfolk, and rescuing princesses. Outside, the thunder crashes like it’s right above us, adding atmosphere to the imagination that’s been turned loose inside. Hours pass, as does the storm. Bedtime nears, for mom and dad as well as the little adventurers, who never seem to need as much sleep as their old man. Their heads hit their pillows with minds full of brain-teasing puzzles, heroic exploits, daring

escapes, laughter, and the kind of moments spent together that, all at once, when you’re not looking, seem to disappear for good. Mom and I tidy up and collapse on the couch. Outside, the crickets and frogs lead a midnight symphony. Somewhere on the river, an alligator croaks out percussion. In the center of the dining table, a single candle still burns, a spark left from a day when it was dark outside… but inside, life was full of light.

Sew’n Sews Makes Baby Items

Members of the SCC Sew’n Sews again were busy making items for Choices Women’s Center in Ruskin. Out of the 63 items made, the most popular were the blankets and portable changing pads. Pregnant and new moms attend Choices to learn about managing their pregnancies and how to take care of a baby. As a result, items made by Sew’n Sews can be purchased with their “Mommy Dollars.” Sew’n Sews is comprised of sewers and quilters who either sew for their own families, for charity or for club sales. with something that allows them to do even more good. The show is available through Facebook. Kowall had no idea about all that was going on behind the scenes. The people at Returning the Favor (RTF) sent a veteran to stay at My Warrior’s Place for a few days and then report back on what he thought of the place and how he was treated. Meanwhile, the staff at RTF did a 20-year background check on Kowall and a thorough check on the finances and policies of MWP. Everything the staff of RTF learned was positive. My Warrior’s Place provides a get-away for military members, veterans, Gold Star families, fire fighters, law enforcement personnel and others for a very minimal cost. Their services include fishing trips, boat rides, cabins, support groups, grief education, breakfast get-togethers and more. Everyone associated with MWP is a volunteer. The crew for RTF was on site February 10, 11 and 12. They took drone footage of the area as well as filming the cabins, gardens and other areas. On the day when the tour was scheduled, Sarah Yourgrau surprised Kowall by introducing Mike Rowe. Kowall took Rowe and Yourgrau for a tour. Near the end of the tour, Rowe surprised her with a check for $15,000 from RTF plus a large, handicapped accessible fishing boat and a $10,000 check from Sun Ray Marine, a Floridabased company that sells and services boats. On July 2, My Warrior’s Place held

5 a Watch Party at Salty Dog that included a buffet dinner, cake and raffle tickets. The restaurant was packed with people. Most of them were active supporters of My Warrior’s Place, some volunteer on a regular basis such as Captain John Baty. He takes vets out on the new boat. Baty says, “I like doing this because I’m a vet. Being out on the water soothes vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They don’t have to think about anything else for one day.” Many of the others in attendance were also involved with other charities for veterans such as Veterans Helping Veterans and Movers for Military. Over and over again, people commented on what a great person Kelly Kowall is and how she runs My Warrior’s Place so wonderfully “on a shoestring.” Cheryl Maty says, “When you go through something terrible like losing your child in a war, you can get better or you can get bitter. Kelly definitely got better.” If you want to watch this episode of Returning the Favor, it is titled “Gold Star Mother.” You can learn more about My Warrior’s Place by going to their website, www.mywarriorsplace. org, reading Kelly Kowall’s book, My Life After the Death of My Son (A Story of Miracles), or visiting their facility off Shell Point Road in Ruskin. If your club or organization would like to book a speaker, Kelly Kowall, President and Founder of My Warrior’s Place and Louise SutherlandHoyt, Program Director of the Project Corregidor Program are available.

Paul Zimmerman,

SCC Softball Player and Amyloidosis Patient

By Bob Monahan, Senior Sports Writer Paul Zimmerman has been an outstanding softball pitcher for 55 years, but most recently was given the news that his rare condition, amyloidosis AL, is not responding to treatment. Paul says: “I don’t know how much time I have on this earth and have not given up. You never Paul Zimmerman know when a new treatment will come along.” Paul Zimmerman was born in Wooster, Ohio and raised in Orrville, Ohio a small town of 7,000 twenty miles south of Akron. This town is best known as the hometown of Smucker’s Jelly. As he grew up he always participated in little league baseball and basketball. In high school he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He played freshman baseball at Kent State. His career choice was a production planner for Westinghouse and Rosemount Analytical. During these working years, he played for company teams in softball and was a member of the ASA state champion team in the age 30 bracket. He continued playing softball up until last year when the illness endangered his heart. Kathy, Paul’s wife of 51 years, first visited Sun City Center to see a friend who lived here and she mentioned that they had a wonderful softball field for seniors. After renting for two years they bought a house and have been living here full time

for the last four years. They like the friendly people of Sun City Center, the activities and the golf cart life and churches. Paul states another reason to love SCC is, “people care about one another”. Paul immediately became an outstanding pitcher and ballplayer here, and Kathy is an excellent pickleball player. They have two children, Julie, who lives in Vermont and Doug who lives in Ohio. Kathy and Paul are grandparents of six children. I was impressed with his kindness. Paul was a man of faith, and is handling his situation with all the dignity and courage that he has displayed all his life. Paul stated that the “best thing he ever did” was to marry Kathy. We here in SCC feel blessed to know Paul.

Fun Day at the Archery Range

The SCC Archery Club recently held a “Fun Day” at the range for their members. Instead of the usual shooting at paper targets, on Fun Day we throw javelins, shoot at balloons, and try to place an arrow closest to the nose of George Washington on a dollar bill. The winner gets the dollar. In the photo, Joe and Rita Mealey compete to be the first to shoot their plastic bottle filled with water. The first one to drain their bottle wins.

Gros Morne - A Captivating Surprise

By Kai Rambow An inland fjord? Yes, and you’ll find it on the west coast of Newfoundland. Even though it takes several hours to reach by car, this is a worthwhile destination. It’s so popular, this was the most difficult place to book accommodation. Western Brook Pond In addition to being a Canadian National Park, Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The highlight is Western Brook Pond, an inland fjord with unique features because it does not connect to the ocean. The best way to experience this natural beauty is to take a boat ride. Tips: Be sure to arrive well in advance of your boat tour departure time. You will need 45 mins to walk from the parking lot to the boat dock. This is not handicap accessible. While this is the number one activity to do, if it’s overcast you won’t see anything. Check the weather forecast: If it looks good, book your tickets right away. Local Theater Newfoundland has many small communities hugging the coastline. Access to entertainment such as movie theaters has historically been very difficult. As a result, Newfoundlanders have become very good at entertaining themselves. Local bands and community theater are vibrant. We took advantage of a local theater production celebrating Newfoundland’s musical and theatrical roots. It was a delightful production, well performed, with plenty of laughter. Tip: Acts are performed in small venues with limited seating. When you secure your hotel reservations, inquire about local theater productions. If you decide something appeals to you, book it well in advance.

Gander Gander is a good place to break up your drive. Gander, a town of 10,000, looked after 7,000 stranded passengers during 9/11. This and Gander’s crucial role of handling air traffic across the Atlantic are well presented in the North American Aviation Museum. If you have a more relaxed pace, stay two nights and take a leisurely trip to Twillingate. After poking around this small town, stop at Sansome’s for a fresh, incredible and inexpensive lobster dinner. The lobster shell was so expertly cut that we simply pulled pieces apart. Sansome’s is so popular residents from Gander drive here for dinner. Tips for a Great Trip Drive Times and Stays: Gander to Gros Morne takes just under four hours. If you’re staying in Gros Morne, stop in Deer Lake for a grocery store, pharmacy, and other needs. The drive through Gros Morne is scenic and you’ll want to stop for pictures. Plan on longer times than posted to reach destinations. Accommodations: Gros Morne is incredibly popular, so book accommodations at least six months in advance. Try to stay in communities located within park boundaries: Rocky Harbour and Cow Head. When looking at a possible place to stay, check the location relative to the park on a map. Nearby Deer Lake has several recognizable hotel chains and a range of restaurants, but is a 30-minute drive to the entrance of the park. Lobster north of Gander: It is an easy 90-minute drive to Twillingate. Sansome’s is located about 10 minutes south. Tip: Be sure to look on a map before, use GPS, and slow down as you approach the road. You can easily drive past the turn.

Western Brook Pond is a spectacular inland fjord. It is best viewed by taking a boat ride.

Fresh, expertly prepared and inexpensive lobster can be found at Sansome’s. Its reputation is so good, residents from Gander gladly make the 90-minute drive.

The Dog Days of Summer

By Ilona Merritt The ‘dog days’ of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. With air-conditioned homes, cars, and stores, it really is not so bad. That is, if you are not a dog who can’t choose his habitat at will. Our pets are dependent on us to take care of them, so, with that in mind, here are 8 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Pet in the ‘dog days’, courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car 2. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water 3. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside 4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day 5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt and concrete) because it can burn your dog’s paws 6. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means of cooling off 7. Keep your dog free of

external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heartworms – consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet 8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats and apply sunscreen to your dog’s skin if they have a thin coat. And one additional note: If you live on a lake take extra caution that your dog does not decide to take a swim. Alligators are always on the prowl looking for a bite to eat.

Coffee with a Cop

By Kai Rambow Coffee with a cop? That’s what it’s really called – and the coffee was really good. Once again deputies from District 4 met with residents at Dunkin Donuts. It is an informal event allowing us to meet members of the Sheriff’s office. “We do these events throughout the county,” explained Chief Deputy Donna Lusczynski, “so members of the community can see us on a personal basis, when it’s not a bad time or they’re in some sort of crisis. Different businesses, such as Dunkin Donuts, have hosted us.” There

Flexible Upright Replaces Crash-Prone Cart Path Post

Area residents who drive their golf carts along the path to and from Walmart will be relieved to see a new, flexible center upright in place of the longbroken wood stanchion near the US-301 crossing. Hillsborough County crews originally installed sturdy 6-by-8-inch posts at each end of the path to deter vehicle traffic. About two years ago, the post nearest the highway was broken off by some kind of large vehicle. The Sun City Center Leathernecks Club, which has “adopted” the path, reset the broken, now much shorter post, and SCC Community Association government liaison Sam Sudman requested that the county install a replacement. After many months of waiting, the Leathernecks fashioned a new post from 4-by-6 timbers. That replacement was struck repeatedly by wayward golf

carts over the ensuing months, and ultimately destroyed. Though several golf carts were damaged, no injuries have been reported. A traffic cone has served as a temporary lane divider for the past few months, and the new golf-cart-friendly “flexible tubular delineator” was installed in early July. A wood post remains at the other end of the path.

Afib? On Medication? We have an alternative

First in the Region Patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) are often prescribed warfarin or other blood thinners to reduce the possible risk of stroke. The Manatee Heart and Vascular Center at Manatee Memorial Hospital is the first in the region to provide patients with NVAF the option to receive the WATCHMANTM Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure Device.

How it Works Doctors implant the WATCHMANTM device with a catheter through a vein in the leg, where it is guided to the opening of the LAA. The physician uses the delivery catheter to open the device up like an umbrella. The implant helps to close off the LAA and catch harmful blood clots before they enter the bloodstream and potentially cause a stroke. Based on manufacturer clinical trial data, most people can discontinue blood thinners within 45 days of the implant.

Creative Person: Sonja Kostas Sculptor Extraordinaire

By Paula Lickfeldt Sonja Kostas moved from New Haven, Connecticut in 2017. Her husband had passed away and her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter lived in Tampa. Sonja was an art teacher in New Haven and she belonged to a pottery studio there, because her husband had encouraged her to join it. She liked sculpting but had had no formal training. Sonja comes from a long line of “creative people.” There were stone carvers, woodcarvers, painters,

and a silversmith in her family. Two things are very important to her concerning her art. The form of the piece has to have some life and energy, and it has to tell a story. Many of her pieces are of people and villages that existed in mythology. Her pieces all tell a story, and Sonja loves to tell her visitors about them. During the time that Sonja lived in Tampa with her daughter, she was looking around Florida to see where she would like to live. She visited Sun City Center and immediately fell in love

She saw a lot of pictures of people who lived in SCC, and she says that they all looked like “regular people,” more down to earth, just like she is. She is so grateful to the Potters Wheel Club for giving her a venue to practice and improve her art. Sun City Center has an abundance of creative and talented people. Sonja Kostas is certainly one of them.

News ofBy Freedom Plaza Peggy Burgess

July at Freedom Plaza began on a happy note; a succession of happy notes, in fact. These were rendered on July 1 by residents who packed the Atrium and its balconies to participate in another “Sing Along with the Freedom Singers”. Celebrating our nation’s musical heritage, and in anticipation of its July 4th birthday, the program was titled “Two Titans of American Music”, honoring composers Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. A highlight of the evening was the performance of Berlin’s song for the Ziegfeld Follies of 1919, A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody, written especially for the parade of “Ziegfeld Showgirls.” Featuring men of the Freedom Singers, our parade of “Freedom Plaza Showgirls,” all flaunting hot-pink feather boas, elicited gales of laughter along with hearty applause. More enjoyable music was on tap for July with several regular monthly programs contributing. The Monthly Music session brought jazz pianist Diane Krall, Meredith Willson’s The Music Man performed by the Opera Club, and Freedom Plaza’s first Karaoke Night.
