Save the Date: FunFest is March 17

By Diane M. Loeffler Mark your calendars for FunFest, from 9 to 2 on March 17. There will be breakfast and lunch food and snacks, a wide variety of entertainment all day, a health fair, Lifeline Screening, and cars on display. Sun City Radio will be located in the gazebo. You will also be able to pick up maps at the gazebo.

Everyone should plan to park near the Community Center on South Pebble Beach. As in the past, parking near the North Campus will be quite limited.

For the convenience of all attendees, handicapped accessible buses will be

running continuously from Community Hall. These buses will drop you off in front of the new office building. If you have a service dog, you may bring him or her with you, but please leave other pets at home.

Brigitt Lewis is chairing FunFest this year. The committee began meeting in November. Most of this year’s committee worked on the 2017 event and FunFest 2018 will benefit from their experience.

Recently, new resident and real estate agent, Sandy Guthrie, held a reception for all of her clients. “I love this space and hold meetings here all the time,” enthused Guthrie, “so I decided to have my event here with Ambreen taking care of the catering.” Since the event was held after regular café hours, guests had the café all to themselves.

Dave Birkett, Joe Elam, Jerry Gibson and Doug Seipelt joined, or re-joined, fellow Directors Marilyn Cote-Miller, Bob Sullivan, Helen Lewis, President John Luper and Corporate Secretary Sam Sudman.

President Luper presented an engraved paperweight to outgoing Director Bob Sanchez with sincere appreciation for serving on the Board of Directors from January 4, 2017 to January 3, 2018.

Luper also recognized the following with a Certificate of Appreciation for services rendered to the Community Association in 2017: Deputy Jeff Merry in sincere appreciation for all his hard work and dedication towards keeping our members and community safe. The Leathernecks Club in appreciation for all their hard work

in keeping the golf cart trail to Walmart useable for our members. The Men’s Club in appreciation for all they do for the Community Association members and facilities. Howie Griffin in appreciation for his dedication for a successful Holiday Golf Cart Parade 2017. The Audubon Club in appreciation of all the hard work that is done in keeping the nature trails beautiful. David Floyd for his dedication as Chairman of the Internal Audit Committee. By the SCC History Society Do you know how Sun City Center got its name? Did you realize that a major fire was a turning point in Sun City Center history? Have you heard that Del Webb was part owner of a major league baseball team at the time he began developing this area? If you are interested in learning the answers to these and other questions, you will have an opportunity to do so this month.

John Bowker, longtime resident of the community and president of the Sun City Center History Society, will present a slideshow illustrating the fascinating development of the area.

Through years of development by eight different companies the community has grown. Many residents have also contributed to making Sun City Center the great place it is today. Learn about the contributions of such individuals as Del Webb, E.G. Simmons, Ray Watson, Al Hoffman and Stanley Whitcomb.

John’s free presentation will take place at Community Hall, 1910 Pebble Beach Blvd. South at 2pm, Saturday, February 17. Light refreshments will be served.

You will also have an opportunity to become a member of Friends of the Sun City Center History Society. Cost of membership begins at five dollars per year. Payment may be made by check or cash. Your involvement will allow the preservation and sharing of Sun City Center history to continue.

What’s New at the Library?

The BOOK SALE is coming! Our annual SCC Library book sale is going to be on Friday, February 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again on Saturday, February 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Caper Room. This is different from years past where it was typically held on a Saturday and Sunday so please make note of the day changes. Hope to see you all there!

Hillsborough County News: The county library will no longer be charging late fees. Please note that Sun City Center is not part of the county system and all SCC fees are still applicable at this library. It is important to also note that while HCPLC will no longer charge late fees, you are still responsible to bring your items back on time. There will be a grace period of 8 days for Hillsborough County (only) after which, your account will be locked until the item is returned. There are still going to be charges for damaged and lost items.

For your convenience, we have flyers in the library detailing the new policy.

As technology advances libraries are learning to adapt. Hillsborough County has a large array of electronic resources for patrons to enjoy. From eBooks to movie streaming you can find just about anything at the county library.

Hillsborough also offers technology classes and walk-in tech support for those who are needing some assistance with their e-readers, tablets, computers and more.

Hillsborough County has been very generous in providing our library with three internet computers and three catalog computers. The catalog computers are located in the Reference Room and do not have regular internet access.

The three internet computers are located in the computer lab room within the Reference Room. Please note, we do not have public printers in the library.

You will need to visit the Sun City Center Computer Club for assistance with printing. We do provide copy service which is restricted to (10) copies per patron at $.10 per copy. We must adhere to copyright laws therefore, we are unable to make copies of copyrighted materials such as patterns and sheet music. Please see a staff member if you have any questions.

HARDSHIP REQUESTS DUE

BY FEBRUARY 28, 2018

Hardship financial relief for 2018 dues is available to Sun City Center members.

The resident owner of the property applying for financial hardship assistance must have been a member of the community in good standing for a period of three years prior to applying for assistance. They must also complete a full financial disclosure. Applications for hardship must be submitted by February 28, 2018 to be considered for the current year. Please see Judy Hill at the CA office to pick up an application.

Trail Blazing

Fat is good for you! Just ask the Yellow-rumped Warblers gobbling up the Wax Myrtle berries on the SCC Nature Trails. Yellow-rumps are quintessential snowbirds, leaving summer breeding grounds in the far north for “winter vacation” quarters in Florida. Their arrival here coincides with the ripening of Wax Myrtle fruits, and whether in the north or south these avian trail mix nuggets are so closely tied to the bird that another name for the Yellow-rump is “Myrtle Warbler.”

Wax Myrtle berries are coated with abundant wax and back in the day before the light bulb lit up in Tom Edison’s brain and lab, colonists used the wax to make bayberry candles. Facetiously, one way to tell if a Yellow-rump has been eating Wax Myrtle is to smell its breath. A tell-tale sign is a cloying aroma of Ye Olde Colonial Gifte Shoppe!

The shrub itself grows to 15 feet tall and is common along the Trails though you won’t always observe the berries because the plant is dioecious. Although both males and females flower, only the females bear fruit.

Also, Yellow-rumps are gregarious gadabouts and when a feeding flock moves through those tiny berries disappear quickly.

Yellow-rumps are the only warblers that have evolved the ability to digest the wax and the oils and fats are a high-energy staple of their diet. But what is good for them may not be good for you.

The Nature Trails trailhead is located opposite North Lake on Del Webb West between Vincennes and Seton Hall. John Lampkin leads interpretive walks on the first Tuesday of each month at 9 am, or by appointment.

About The Membership Directory

President’s Report

By John Luper, CA President Why did you choose Sun City Center as your retirement home? Is it the central location and access to so much around us? Where else can you use a golf cart to go to your bank, your grocery store, your doctors and a hospital? Was it the winter weather here compared to what nearly everyone in the rest of the country has to deal with? Was it all of the amenities provided by our Community Association for such a reasonable price? Or, like me, do you say all of the above and much more?

Excitement continues to grow as we see construction of our new administration building almost finished.

We now expect the contractor to be done in a few weeks and we will have our certificate of occupancy (CO). Staff will then start doing their part of preparing for the move from our temporary offices into the new building. The actual date for the move will probably not happen until early May after season is over and we will interrupt our residents the least.

I look forward to visiting with all of our committee volunteers at their special luncheon to be held on February 15 in the Florida room. And March is just around the corner, and everyone should mark their calendar for coming to FunFest on Saturday March 17. Enjoy the weather.

By Uta Kuhn Have you ever wondered why our Sun City Center Phone Book is called a “Membership Directory”?

Well there is a very good reason for this. If you’ve ever looked at the first 29 pages of the directory, you’ll understand why it got its name. That’s because those 29 pages contain a wealth of information useful to our residents.

As an example, Page one lists Emergency Numbers, for the following: 1. Emergency Squad Ambulance 2. Kings Point Security 3. SCC Security Patrol 4. Community Resource Deputy Sheriff ’s Office 5. Deputy Non-Emergency Sheriff And that’s not all. There is also a Priority Number List including such numbers as the Community Association Office, Samaritan Services SCC Ride, etc.

Page Three has a list of Community Numbers which include numbers for Freedom Plaza, Aston Gardens, Lifepath Hospice, The Maintenance Dept. and numbers for CA Club Rooms. Club Room numbers are an important part of the directory if you need to get a hold of someone (in an emergency) if they happen to be in a particular room. The list is too long to mention here, so if you need the number of a Club Room be sure to check out Page Three.

Page Four lists numbers for all Houses of Worship, including surrounding communities. Page Five – All Area Hospitals. Pages Six, Seven, Eight - Community Support Services, such as Alzheimer’s Support Group, American Cancer Society, Community Information Center, and many, many more, too numerous to list.

NOTICE: Each community and club in Sun City Center and Kings Point has specific rules about membership and attendance. Unless specifically stated or posted, most venues, meetings and events hosted on the Community Association campus and in Kings Point require attendees to bring their SCC CA or KP ID or come with a resident member. Sun City Center Swim Club

The Sun City Center Swim Dancers will be featuring a song from The Little Mermaid during its annual show on March 10. The “Mermaids” will delight the audience as they glide through the water with flippers to the tune part of Your World. Eight more numbers will be performed by the eleven women that are the swim dancers. The show was sold out last year, so be sure to mark your calendar. Tickets are $3 and will be on sale by members in February and at the kiosk in the Atrium Building at the Central Campus during the first two weeks preceding the show.

All residents of Sun City Center and Judy Quitsch, Rosemary Collins-Riley, Kings Point are invited to join the Swim Sharon Axtell Dancers Club. No special skills are necessary. All that is needed is the ability to swim. Anyone interested is invited to watch a practice any Monday or Wednesday evening at 7:30pm in the lap pool in the Atrium Building. Registered Nurses Club

Potters Contribute To Empty Bowls

Potters from the Potters Wheel Club of SCC traveled to the Clay Center of St. Petersburg to participate in a “Throw-A-Thon” event to make clay bowls for an Empty Bowls Fundraiser. The group of 11 club members created over 75 clay bowls in the one-day Throw-A-Thon. They created bowls by throwing clay on a wheel and by building the bowls by hand using pinch pots and coils.

The bowls will be trimmed, glazed and fired and be used as part of “Empty Bowls,” an international project to fight hunger. Clay Center St. Petersburg will sponsor an event on March 3 where a simple meal is served in the donated bowls. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and bowl, guests contribute to a local hungerfighting organization, in this case, St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

The RN Club is in the process of recruiting officers for the coming year. Our next meeting is in a new location. We’ll meet at the usual time (9:15 a.m.) in Room 3 of the Community Hall on the south campus (1910 Pebble Beach Blvd. South). Parking is plentiful at the Community Hall.

Coffee and treats will be available during our social time. Our speaker is Noreen Schramm from the Emergency Squad.

Noreen will explain the “inner workings” of the squad and answer questions from members.

Election of new officers for the club will occur in April at our regular meeting At a previous meeting, Vivian Hodgkin, RN discussed community mental health (April 5).

Installation of new officers will take problems with Karen Fredericks, MSW. place at the May 3 Spring/Nurses Day Luncheon. The luncheon will take place in the Florida Room of the Atrium Building. Information about the club is available from Lynne Murphy, RN at 813-634-6707.

SCC Photo Club Chamber Of Commerce Display

On December 12, the Sun City Center photo club held its annual best of the best photo competition. Photographers submitted their 2017 winning entries to be judged. The Best of the Best Award was given to Ann Jacques for her color digital photo, entitled, ”Sunflower Side View.”

All of the winning photos are now being displayed at the Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce and can be viewed by all. The photos will be on display until Thursday, February 15.

Sun City Center Photo Club Meets February 13

The Sun City Center Photo Club will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 13, in the Caper Room located in the Atrium Building on the Sun City Center main campus.

Matthew Dill, an internet marketer and photographer will be our guest speaker. Matt is also a videographer and an FAA certified remote pilot. Living in Massachusetts until 2015, Matt then moved to North Port, Florida. He is the owner of Stellar Web Production, where he offers internet marketing services to customers throughout the country.

Matt will give an overview of what he has learned while flying and will demonstrate examples of how to take aerial photos for commercial and personal use. The club meeting begins at 6:30 and is open to all members and their guests. So, if you have an interest in aerial photography, then please join us for a very knowledgeable evening. Membership dues are $20 annually and $30 for a household couple.

SCC Scrapbooking Club

By Robbin StrattonUpson The SCC Scrapbooking Club celebrated the holiday season at their annual Christmas Luncheon during their monthly meeting on Monday December 18, in the Armstrong Room of the Atrium. Eighteen members enjoyed trays of chicken fingers, sandwiches, fruit, and finger desserts.

Members once again elected Betty James to continue as president and Jeanne Ratliff as secretary/treasurer for 2018. Membership Dues are $5, payable by check to ‘SCC Scrapbooking Club’. If you are interested in preserving your memories or family history, please contact Jeanne Ratliff at 642-9669 to join our fun group which meets monthly on the third Monday of each month. Bunka Art Stitchers Club

By Barb Carlini, Publicity Chairperson The Bunka Art Stitchers Club of Sun City Center is having a show displaying over 100 framed pictures that are all done with thread. It is precise punch needle artwork of many different types of stitches. Originated from Japan. Many of our kits come from Japan. Other kits from Canada and Australia.

The Winter Olympics and Your Favorite Seafood?

By Kai Rambow December 26: It’s the day after Christmas and while most people are still sleeping, a few competitive figure skaters are warming up for their regular practice sessions. Joshua (Josh) Santillan and his figure skating partner, Jessica Pfund, will work with their coach one hour this morning, one hour in the afternoon and practice individually for 45 minutes. That’s just ice time.

December 27, 3:45 p.m.: Even though it’s the week before the Nationals competition, Josh heads across the highway from the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex to Anna Maria Oyster Bar (AMOB) to start his shift as a server.

He trains full-time, works full-time at AMOB and is taking college courses online, maintaining a 3.5 GPA. Practicing a death spiral.

everything. “It’s a super expensive sport, so funding our training is the hardest part,” shared Josh. “Any competition where we represent Team USA, those expenses are paid for by US Figure Skating. Any competition where we are representing ourselves, Regionals and Nationals, we pay our expenses. Flying is expensive and it’s $200 a night for each hotel room.”

SCC Security Patrol Re-Organized & Re-Energized

By Ilona Merritt There have been some recent changes at the Sun City Center Security Patrol.

According to Norma Hardesty, President of the Board, and Gill Jessee, Chief of Patrol, the hardworking volunteers at the Patrol are dedicated to serving our community well and with transparency.

The Security Patrol currently has about 820 members, and they estimate that it would take another 300 members to ensure that they are not scrambling to fill each shift. Regular training classes are held monthly. The Patrol asks for members to commit to only three hours monthly. Amazing ... for only three hours a month, anyone can contribute a valuable service to this community.

In addition to establishing cooperative efforts with other community service organizations, such as the Dog Owners Group, which had provided a chip scanner to use when someone finds a lost pet, the Patrol also conducts wellness checks. When an out-of-town relative is unable to reach a loved one in SCC, the Patrol will make every effort to contact the resident and check their home. If the Captain feels that there is a likelihood that the resident is inside the home, the dispatcher will notify the Sun City Center Emergency Squad who will then take over.

New programs which directly affect our community in a positive way are being initiated. They are putting together a Silver Alert on-foot patrol to assist the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office (HCSO) in the search for our residents with reduced cognitive abilities who may have wandered away. Partnering with the SCC Bike Club and HCSO to

provide patrol cars, golf carts, bicycles, and on-foot searchers on short notice.

The Patrol has two radio-equipped, highly visible vehicles on patrol from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Security Patrol members are volunteering over 32,000 hours and patrolling about 125,000 miles annually Another ver y special ser vice is being offered by the Patrol. Safety to our residents when they sell items to strangers through Craigslist and similar programs. The Patrol encourages residents with small items for sale to meet with the prospective buyers in some public place like the Sheriff ’s substation behind Big Lots. If an item is too large or bulky to sell outside the home the Security Patrol will provide, upon advance request, a vehicle to park outside the residence during the buyer’s presence.

An Early Spring?

Adam Porter Editor in Chief, News of Sun City Center Every February, we celebrate the imminent arrival of “Florida spring” by watching one of our favorite movies, the classic Bill Murray romantic comedy, “Groundhog Day.” If you aren’t familiar with the film, Murray’s character, an irascible and egotistical weatherman named ‘Phil’, gets caught in a time loop.

He is forced to relive the same day over and over again until he learns not to be such a self-absorbed jerk. As they say in the movie biz, “hijinks ensue.” Along the way, Phil meets The Girl, loses The Girl, and finally figures out a way to Get Her Back. And, of course, he becomes a Much Better Person.

The world’s most famous rodent weatherman, Punxsutawney Phil, the “seer of seers” and “prognosticator of prognosticators,” plays a key role in the film as well. He predicts the late coming of spring, but he also gets kidnapped and tries to drive a pickup truck. The movie doesn’t exactly stay on the rails, but it’s heartfelt and fun. At one point, Phil – the weatherman, not the groundhog – waxes poetic about the impending extension of a frigid winter, quoting Anton Chekhov: “When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life.

But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter…”

That’s a sweet sentiment, and Murray plays it pitch perfect in the film. But down here in the Sunshine State we know better. Let the rest of the country shiver in their thermal pants and work the business end of a snow shovel well into May. We want the kind of weather

Florida seems to deliver every February and March. That kind of “Chamber of Commerce” conditions that entice visitors to make plans to move here.

Clear blue skies, perfect temperatures and everything green growing again, weeks before they enjoy that anywhere else in the Lower 48.

As the mercury hovers around 70 and the clouds go into hiding, we enjoy the onset of festival season, here and across the community. In Sun City Center, we come out for FunFest, the biggest outdoor party of the year. Countless vendors displaying their wares, mouthwatering food and all sorts of fun. This year, mark your calendars for March 17. Come out to the Main Community Association campus and celebrate both Sun City Center and Saint Patrick on the biggest community party day of the year.

And that’s just what’s happening right here. The greater Hillsborough County community also enjoys two of the biggest fairs of the year around this time. The massive Florida State Fair begins on February 8 and runs through February 19. Come for the crafts, games and exhibitions. Stay for the wonderful aromas of all that finger-licking fair food.

And then there’s one of my favorites, the venerable Strawberry Festival. While this Plant City based frivolity has all the fun of a county fair with an undeniable small-town vibe, the real draw, aside from the annual concert lineup, is the heaping bowls of sticky, gooey, delicious strawberry shortcake. Build your own culinary miracle and dive in. I’ll be right there in line with you.

And, if you have never experienced the magic of a real circus under the Big Top, or if you just want to recapture the wonder of that timeless experience, Februar y is also your chance to experience Circus Sarasota’s Ovation show. Presented by the Circus Arts Conservatory, Circus Sarasota is chock full of performers who represent the best and brightest of the circus arts. The show will go on from February 9 through March 4 - don’t miss it!

While all that snow sure looks pretty on TV, far as I’m concerned, “Phil” can keep his “long and lustrous” winter. I’m much happier with an early spring, strolling through the festivals and cruising in the boat while the rest of the country is stuck wearing knit hats with ear flaps.

Jessica is here longer because she coaches four days a week for several hours,” mentioned Josh. “We also do ballet twice a week, off-ice fitness three times a week, off-ice lifts every day, and we perform our programs off-ice.”

During a training session skaters might practice one part of their routine over and over again for 30 minutes.

After skating the piece, follows a quick conference with their coach, Lyndon Johnston. Feedback is specific, constructive and immediately applied.

The actual performance time might be 20 seconds. When it all comes together, the audience gets to see a graceful fluid skate from Jessica and Josh.

Josh carries his focus and energy to his work at AMOB. If you’re a regular at AMOB, you know how busy it can be.

“I’ve always been very competitive in everything I do. I love to skate because I’m pushed every day to get better and improve even more than ‘the other guys.’”

Helping Two Impressive Young Athletes In an age when every young person seems to be glued to an electronic device of some kind, it’s more than refreshing to meet young athletes with an outstanding work ethic and incredible commitment

to improving every day. Jessica and Josh would briefly acknowledge my presence during their practice sessions, then for the next hour be totally focused on their skating.

Both were even more impressive during our interview: charmingly candid, delightfully funny and optimistically competitive. Josh, 25, and Jessica, 20, showed more character and maturity than many adults I’ve interviewed. If they were tempted to know what I was writing, they resisted the urge, and they were much too polite to ask for any angle in this article. What follows is strictly my addition.

Broadcast commentators remarked that Jessica and Josh have the potential to be even better. Johnston has coached several pairs teams to the Worlds and Olympics. Jessica and Josh skate beautifully together; this is a team worth following and supporting.

“Most of the time when we say we are quilters, they think of us sitting with the grannies. This is really fine arts. People are surprised at how artistic quilts can be,” explained Mary McLaughlin.

A Slice of Key West is a vibrant quilt on permanent display at the Visitors Center.

It was created by four quilters, each working on different panels – without consulting with each other. The result is remarkable.

Barbara Angemi, Mary Chabot, Mary McLaughlin and Jan Ring met through quilting, have been friends for the past seven years. “All of us were in traditional quilting and we thought we should try art quilting. We had tried it on our own and we decided to collaborate on one. It was an experiment; this was the first one we did like this.”

“We wanted something related to Florida and looked at a lot of images. Key West cottages have a happy atmosphere. We liked this piece, we liked the colors and especially the shadows. We wrote to the artist, Karen Sheridan, explained to her what we wanted to do and she gave us permission. She had never thought of it as being a quilt and she was pleasantly surprised with the result.”

It started as a temporary exhibit, but volunteers and visitors at the center commented on how much they liked the quilt. This is not surprising since the quilt won a blue ribbon at the Florida State Fair. To see this collaborative creation in person, stop by any day the Visitors Center is open. Remember, like all artwork, look but don’t touch.

By Ilona Merritt It is increasingly common to have a young woman at the controls of a powerful radio transmitter, leaning over a smoldering soldering iron, climbing a tower, or designing the next generation of electronic circuitry. But it wasn’t always that way.

Meet Rita Hale, who graduated from high school in 1946, then went to work as an operator for the local telephone company. She was ambitious and eager to learn. She worked her way “up the ladder” through many responsible jobs. At one point, she even strung wire through 10 offices, using a 15-foot ladder, because the men didn’t want to do the job.

She became interested in amateur radio right after high school: her first radio was a Johnson Viking kit. At age 24, a friend of her father invited her to see his radio set-up and suggested that she broadcast on the radio. As a result, she received calls from all over the world, mainly because it was a novelty at the time for a woman to be involved in this endeavor.

Amateur radio is a hobby and, by law, completely non-commercial. Individual amateur “ham” radio operators pursue the avocation for personal pleasure through building their own radio stations and communicating with their fellows globally. Amateur radio came into being after radio waves (proved to exist by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz in 1888) were adapted into a communication system in the 1890s by the Italian inventor, Guglieamo Marconi.

Rita learned Morse code, could transmit up to 20 words a minute, and took the test to get her license. In those days, she was required to draw her own schematics. The test was not easy and practice exams were offered to prepare for the actual test. Since ham radios had their start in the late 1800’s, one

might think that by the 1950’s, women would be welcome in this field. “Not so!”, according to Rita.

These skills helped her with jobs at the telephone company but the men were not accepting women and did everything possible to get the women to quit. Fortunately, Rita had a mentor who kept encouraging her to “hang in there”. But, oftentimes, it was hard to keep going. But she persevered. In 1987, she went to school for fiber optics and, by this time, her male co-workers had become more accepting.

In 1956, she married Rodney Hale.

He did not share her love for amateur radio, but he did support her hobby.

They loved to travel and both enjoyed collecting and showing antique cars.

She helped Rodney restore cars, even crawling underneath the cars to work on them. She still has one of the cars here in SCC and another in Maine.

They initially bought their first house in SCC because friends of theirs lived here. They rented it out until they retired. Then they bought a second house in 1989. They spent winters in SCC and, in the spring, they headed back to their cottage in Maine. Sadly, Rodney passed away two months before their 50th anniversary. Rita still drives to Maine every summer.

At her 90th birthday party, which was hosted by her friends, she shared a few personal tips: the secret to her good health is that she never stops moving; she maintains her youthful complexion by never, never putting soap on her face, she only uses water. She also stated that she does not let adversity get her down.

Her mother, who passed away at age 99, is her role model. Rita keeps very active at the Lapidary Club and she likes to cook and to entertain friends.

The day of her 90th birthday party, she celebrated a life well lived. We wish her many happy and healthy years to come.

Monday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rollins Theater Feature: The Matchmaker Starring: Janeane Garofalo, Dave O’Hara, Milo O’Shea Marcy, an aide in the election campaign of a bumbling US Senator, is sent to Ireland to search his ancestry and help him gain the Irish vote at home. She arrives in a small Irish village in the middle of traditional matchmaking festival. The local matchmaker is determined to pair her off but this becomes a challenge.

Security Patrol Continues to Add New Members

The newest volunteer class of drivers and dispatchers completed the orientation for the Sun City Center Security Patrol on January 12, 2018. The new members will work with an experienced driver or dispatcher on their first shift and will then be ready to patrol or dispatch on their own.

The Security Patrol has Orientation Classes twice monthly and accepts members from Sun City Center, Kings Point, Freedom Plaza, Aston Gardens, and Sun Towers.

Chevy Vs Ford, and Both are Cruiser of the Month

Bob Icenogle’s 1936 Chevrolet two-door sedan is Sun City Center Roamin’ Oldies cruiser of the month. And so is his 1940 Ford pickup. With the votes tied, both were declared winners.

Bob is a frequent participant in Southshore events, and sometimes has a friend bring the Chevy while he drives the Ford. Both are splendid street rods, combining the appeal of classic design with modern comfort and driveability. Both are powered by a 350 cubic-inch V8, with automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, air conditioning and backup camera.

The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month, with a rain date the following Thursday, at the Mirabay Village Shopping Center on US41 in Apollo Beach. About 100 of the area’s finest antique and collectible cars often take part, accompanied by classic oldies music played by DJ Joey Ferrante. In the 1960’s and 70’s scientists were generally revered as folks who worked diligently and found truths that could be demonstrated, believed, and used by the world. In the past few years, a substantial fraction of the general public has begun to disregard carefully constructed studies with reproducible results that have been published and reviewed in reputable journals and have accepted instead internet blog opinions by celebrities, books by self-appointed “scientists”, and press conference proclamations by people with no known credentials. Matters such as Darwinian evolution, climate change, and vaccine-induced autism are seeing their overwhelming scientific evidence being dismissed as a mere “belief ” not any more or less valid than a belief in one person’s anecdotal experience. Phillip Leto, respected lecturer from the Discovery University and familiar name to SCC residents, will address these issues as he returns to the SET club this year for his fourth presentation.

Sun City Center International Forum Program on International Trade

On Friday, February 9, 2018 at 9:30 a.m., the International Forum of Sun City Center will present a program on international trade, an economic activity that affects our daily lives in more ways that we may think. To explain what is international trade, its positive or negative impact and the various trade agreements with initials such as NAFTA, TPP, and KORUS, the Forum has invited Ms. Susan L. Hoeller, J.D. Principal Attorney at Hoeller Law Firm and Todd M. Shank, PhD, Associate Professor of Finance at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

SCC Tax Club Free Tax Returns

Marilyn Wilson, District Coordinator for the SCC Tax Club, reports they will help prepare free tax returns at the SouthShore United Church of Christ, (formerly the United Community Church), 1501 La Jolla Ave., and at the Club House in Kings Point, 1902 Clubhouse Road, beginning February 1, 2018. The hours at SouthShore United Church of Christ will be Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., appointments and shut-in assistance requests will be accepted, beginning February 1, at (813) 634-3502, including with Spanish-speaking preparers on certain days. The hours at the Kings Point site are Mon – Wed - Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., appointments accepted, beginning February 1, at (813) 260-3509.

So Many Ways to Make a Difference!

Bee Swol may be 96, and currently recovering from a broken hip, but she is a busy gal nonetheless. Bee is busy crocheting heavy afghans to keep children warm in winter!

Swol’s daughter, Cynthia Swol, visited Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry one recent cold Saturday morning, lugging huge bags stuffed with afghans. She came bearing Bee’s gift for each child who passed through. Bee had been crocheting these wraps all year to give away now.

“The children were thrilled getting these gifts today,” says Anita Bullaro, who is co-director of the Pantry with her husband Tom. “Many kids opened the afghans and wrapped themselves in it immediately!”

Emergency Squad Volunteer Information Programs

The Sun City Center Emergency Squad is hosting an Informational Program at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, with next meeting being held on the February 14 to answer questions and provide details to prospective volunteers.

The meeting will take place at the Training Building at 124 S. Pebble Beach. We invite interested residents to find out more about the Squad and the volunteer opportunities we have available. The Squad is always looking for people who may be interested in helping on our ambulances and wheelchair vans. The positions include Emergency Medical Responders, Ambulance Drivers and Emergency Medical Technicians. Other volunteer positions the Squad has available include IT specialists, vehicle maintenance volunteers, and cooks.

Boot Scootin’ With the Wisconsin Club

Our next social event will have you hootin’, hollerin’, thigh slapping and boot scootin’ as we get together for some good ol’ country and western entertainment from Billy Linsley. Recently FL 0845 Chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) honored new KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) member Dorothy Jones who successfully reached her goal weight. As it is customary two yellow roses are given to the new KOPS who then traditionally gives the other to the person who is acknowledged as an outstanding supporter. Dorothy presented her second yellow rose to friend and fellow TOPS member Sheila Annino.

The Sun City Center Men’s Club started the new year with an enlightening and educational program about the Florida Aquarium located in Tampa on Channelside Drive. Libby Joyce, Director of Advancement, told of the aquarium itself. Specifically, the number of visitors, the fact that the Aquarium is a non-profit organization, the current programs, and the plans for the future. Keri O’Neil, oversees the care of endangered corals native to Florida and is working to grow the Florida Aquarium coral conservation program. The coral preservation program is located in Apollo Beach near the TECO plants. Ms. O’Neil told of the loss of coral and coral habitat throughout Florida’s coastal waters and programs to save, protect, and re-introduce corals to ocean waters. Florida has the dubious honor of being one of the top locations for scammers to collect tax returns that aren’t theirs. Here are a few scenarios for you to consider.

Scenario One: “I hate messing around with taxes. It’s a tedious task so I put it off. Why is that a problem?” Well…. because while you are dragging your feet, some very ambitious scammers may be filing with your name and social security number, and they are using a fake address that insures the money will go to them, not you.

Yes, you can and should resolve the matter by completing a Identity Theft Affidavit, IRS Form 14039. You can

find it at IRS.gov. If you have previously contacted the IRS and did not have a resolution, you should call the Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-9084490. The bad news is that it will take an average of 312 days to resolve your case.

As for filing taxes being a tedious task, consider having someone help you with your taxes. AARP provides a free service at the Southshore United Church of Christ at 1501 La Jolla Avenue. If you are someone who doesn’t pay taxes, still file a 104 EZ every year as a safety measure to prevent scammers from using your SSN fraudulently to collect money.

Scenario Two: “I just got a call from the IRS. I know it is from them, because it says so on caller ID.” Actually, the individuals and groups can make their caller ID show whatever they want it to say.

someone with an IRS caller ID called, but after talking to the first guy, I was transferred to his supervisor and she said I was in big trouble. When I objected to what she said, she called the IRS attorney to the phone. The attorney said that the police would be contacting me if I didn’t pay them right away. The attorney gave me a few options of how to pay including gift cards or by giving my debit card or credit card information. He even said that he would take $2,000 less than what I owed. I’ve never been in trouble in my whole life. I felt sick. Then I saw that another call was coming in. The second call was from the local police department.”

If any or all of the above occurs, you have just been scammed by a really slick group of thieves! Everything about this scenario is wrong. Merry says, “The IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.” He says that they will always give you the opportunity to question them and to file an appeal. “They will never require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes….or ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. They will never bargain with you about the amount to be paid.”

Scammers especially like to ask for gift cards because law enforcement cannot trace them to locate the scammers.

Scenario Four: “The IRS sent me an email. It contained their letterhead and several phone numbers. They even gave me a link to click on. I looked carefully and it looked official.”

February 2018 Do not respond! Do not click on any links! Forward the email to phishing@ irs.gov . Let them trace down the culprits to save unsuspecting people from becoming victims. By the way, don’t you wonder why people who are so good at making up professional looking websites don’t just get a real job? The scamming business must pay really, really well.

Avoid being a victim. Follow all suggested safety measures with your computer and financial information.

Don’t carry anything with your social security number on it. Both last year and this year, Deputy Merry suggested making a copy of our Medicare cards and blocking out the first five digits of the ID number on it since the ID number is our social security number.

Guard your SSN. Only give it to a business if absolutely necessary. Once a year check your credit report and your Social Security Administration earnings statement. Merry says, “Do not give personal information over the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless you have either initiated the contact or you are sure you know who is asking.”

Lights, Camera, Action: BBC Division Films SCC on Thanksgiving Day

By Diane M. Loeffler What did you do on Thanksgiving Day? From 8:30 to 5:30 CA Director Marilyn Cote`-Miller and Sun Radio’s Vern Hendricks spent the day in their golf carts driving very slowly all around the north and south sides of Sun City center as Expectation Entertainment, Ltd., a division of BBC Worldwide, taped a segment for a documentary.

The premise of the documentary is that Dale Winton, a well-known celebrity in Great Britain, is looking for a retirement home in Florida. Winton’s show business career began in 1972.

Over the years, he has had his own radio shows, appeared on television and hosted several television series including Dale’s Supermarket Sweep (1993-2000 and 2007) and the National Lottery show In It to Win It (2002-2015). He also played himself as a game show presenter in Trainspotting 1995-1996.

Miller was in the first golf cart. Sitting beside her was the director peering down at some sort of tablet that gave him immediate feedback on the taping.

Sitting in the back-facing seats were the videographer and the sound man.

Miller says, “We had to drive very slowly so that the cart with Vern Hendricks and Dale Winton could be close enough for the videographer and sound man to tape what they were saying. From time to time, the director would whisper that we needed to slow down or give some other direction. Vern answered Dale’s questions and gave a history of Sun City Center. A few times Vern conferred with me about a question.”

Miller says, “Dale and the film crew said that they were very impressed with Sun City Center, especially the

sports complex, the range and variety of houses, the number of clubs, the fact that we carry no debt and how volunteers manage everything including The Emergency Squad.”

Since Winton is a former radio personality, Hendricks took him to the SUN Radio Station to interview him for 10 minutes. Later, everyone went to Elysa (Lisa) and Vern’s home for Thanksgiving. Miller says, “They decided they wanted Dale Winton to experience a real American Thanksgiving dinner while he was here. We needed to find someone to host a dinner and to do it at a time that fit with their schedule.”

Originally, the director just asked that Dale Winton be part of the Thanksgiving dinner. However, Vern and Lisa Hendricks insisted that everyone on the crew partake in the meal. So, Vern, Lisa, son Todd Hendricks, daughterin-law Sarah and Lisa’s 93 year old mother, Elyse Oddo, sat down to dinner with Dale Winton, the director, the videographer, the sound man, a woman who was busy with paperwork, Dale’s personal assistant, the makeup woman (to give Dale Winton a Florida tan) and four others. They ate turkey, sweet potatoes, deviled eggs, traditional stuffing, pineapple stuffing, cranberry sauce and other seasonal items. Oddo said grace before the meal while the crew taped her. It should be noted that this was not Oddo’s first brush with fame. In 1944 she won the title of Miss Wisconsin.

Vern Hendricks says, “Dale was a real stand up guy. We had a great time.

It was good for the community. I’m really impressed that Dale Winton, the director and the crew find us fascinating.

It speaks to what a wonderful place Sun City Center is to live. After the broadcast, we will get a copy of the documentary. The crew also took still photos. Unfortunately, it never occurred to any of us to take pictures too.”

Marilyn Cote`-Miller says, “It was a wonderful experience. They were all very nice, polite and considerate. Afterwards they gave me a box of chocolates as a thank-you gift.” Miller was also involved in live and taped broadcasts when she was the director of Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Derby, New York.

So, how did this all come about?

Originally, Expectation Entertainment contacted John Luper saying they were

considering having Sun City Center be one of the communities in the documentary and asked to interview him. John Luper invited Marilyn Cote`-Miller to join him because she is the Chair of Public Relations and Communications and also is active in the History Society. After the meeting, Director Matt Reid was convinced that he wanted Sun City Center in the documentary.

Miller says, “They sent me an email a month ago saying they are going to release the film in March and that they would send a copy once it aired. I signed a release so I could get it.” Won’t that be fun for all of us to see!

Family Connections to SCC

The Haven of Hope

The Haven of Hope is a bridge between incarceration and a free life and receives no state or federal financial help. All monies that support the ministry come from private donations and grants.

Janet Smith and Melanie shared the story of The Haven of Hope with the women of SouthShore United Church of Christ at their January meeting. Haven of Hope began its journey in December of 2015. Up to five women at a time can live in the home. When a woman is released from prison, she will take a six-hour bus ride to Tampa where she is met by someone from Haven of Hope. Each woman has one year, living in the home, to get a job and become self-sufficient. Thus far, the success rate has been high.

The SouthShore UCC women all brought personal items for women and household cleaning supplies and paper products to be donated to Haven of Hope. A luncheon of homemade soups concluded the morning.

By Paula Lickfeldt Patty Brandt is the daughter of Jessie and Charlie Manson who lived in Rochester, New York. In 1972 Jessie and Charlie retired and decided to move to Florida for their retirement.

The came to Sun City Center and they liked the lifestyle that SCC had to offer. They had a home built on the corner of Oakmont and El Rancho.

Shortly after moving in to their new home, Jessie was looking out the window and saw her neighbors in the yard. She went out to meet them and was surprised to learn that Kaye and Oscar VandenBosch, her new neighbors were also from Rochester, NY. They had a daughter living in SCC who was also from Rochester.

They all decided to start a New York group and party at the Sandpiper Restaurant.

Patty was still living in Rochester when her parents decided to come to FL. She decided to move to Arizona.

Arizona did not work out for her so she decided to come to Florida to be closer to her parents. She got a job in Sarasota working for the county.

She lived in Sarasota but came to SCC quite often on the weekends. She became part of the New York group.

In 1978, at a party, Patty met Dick, the son of Kaye and Oscar. Patty and Dick were married in 1978. They lived in Bradenton for three years and Brandon for thirteen years. When they decided to retire, they both liked the idea of moving to Sun City Center to live.

Patty was an EMT on the Emergency Squad but had to give it up when Dick became ill and she needed to be his caregiver. Dick passed away in 2010.

Patty still lives in the house that she and Dick lived in together, but now she lives with her dog Portia. Patty volunteered and the Nearly New Shop and now is the clerk for the “minibus.”

She enjoys registering people for trips and likes to be able to give helpful information about destinations that she has visited. Patty is very active and involved at the SouthShore United Church of Christ where she is a trustee and a Hospitality Host.

Dick’s two children live close by so Patty enjoys her life in SCC and the time that she is able to spend with them and their families.

Beautifully restored antiques, muscle cars, street rods, and resto-mods will be on display at Freedom Plaza Golfview Terrace (819 Freedom Plaza Circle, Sun City Center) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 18. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Sun City Center, the car show is a fundraiser to support local charities and students. Stop by Freedom Plaza to talk with classic car owners, meet classic car restoration experts, enjoy great music and hot food, and help us raise money for local caregivers and scholarships.

Classic car registration costs $10, which includes a food coupon worth $5. Public visitors are asked to make a $5 donation, which includes 5 tickets to bid on Chinese auction packages.

Proceeds from donations, auctions, sponsorships, and the sale of food and beverages will benefit the SCC Samaritan’s Alzheimer’s Auxiliary, the Hillsborough Community College’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training scholarships, and the SCC Rotary Club’s student scholarship programs.

snacks prepared by the Rotary club’s members from India (these sold out last year!). Music from the 40s, 50s, and 60s is also on the menu, served up by local DJ Joey Ferrante. Tickets will be on sale for 50/50 raffles and Chinese auctions of items donated by local businesses, and tax-deductible donations will be gratefully accepted in cash or checks payable to the SCC Rotary Foundation.

At least 100 classic cars will be on display, with many examples from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. The Roamin’ Oldies, a local classic car club, will be featured as will cars from the Gateway Classic Cars showroom in Ruskin.

Pistorius Collectible Cars, a classic car restoration company from Tampa, will also be displaying some of their recent projects and available to talk about the craftsmanship of restoring old cars to their original glory.

Military News MOWW National Commander to Visit Local Chapters

The Military Order of the World Wars’ (MOWW) Commander-in-Chief (CINC), retired USAF Colonel David Gibson, and his wife, Diane, will be in the Tampa Bay area to visit Companions of the Sun City Center (SCC-Hillsborough), Clearwater (Pinellas), & Bradenton-Sarasota Chapters, and close friends, during the week of 12-18 February 2018. On Thursday, 15 February, starting at 5 p.m. the CINC will be the honored guest at the SCC Chapter 25th Anniversary Dining Out to be held in the Plaza Club at the Freedom Fairways Golf Course, 3932 Upper Creek Drive, SCC, Florida. Attendance is open to all current and former federally-uniformed officers and spouses, children or grandchildren. Col. William Graham, Retired Activities Office, MacDill AFB Address MOAA

By Frank Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret.) Col. William Graham, Director, Retired Activities Office (RAO), MacDill AFB, was the featured speaker at the Military Officers of America Association (MOAA) monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in the Florida Room at the North Side Atrium.

Col. Graham attended Purdue University and Graduated in June 1955. He then entered the USAF in August 1955 and graduated from flight school in June 1957.

He was then stationed at James Connaly AFB, Waco, TX flying F-80’s and F-89’s.

He retired in May 1981 (26 years) after flying over 7000 hours of jet flight time in F-100’s, F4’s, and F15’s.

Col. Graham discussed RAO activities including free tax preparations, VA problems, disability matters, TRICARE questions, ID card acquisitions and other retiree issues.

Secret Service Agent Richard Regalla Address MOWW

By Frank Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret.) The featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) was Special Agent (SA) Richard Regalla. The luncheon was held in the Freedom Plaza Club on January 18, 2018.

SA Regalla was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania and grew up in Latrobe, PA. He also lived in New York, Virginia, and LCDR John Glynn, USN (Ret); SA Richard Florida. He graduated from Duquesne Regalla; Maj. Jim Haney, Commander, University in 1994 and joined the US local MOWW chapter.

Secret Service in 2002. Prior to joining the Secret Service, he worked for Arnold Palmer for several years during high school and college and went to work full time for his organization immediately after college. SA Regalla played some professional golf on mini tours in Florida.

He is currently a silent partner in an ownership group of a small public golf course in Western PA (Glengarry Golf Links).

His US Secret Service career includes Counter Assault Team, Presidential Protective Detail (President Obama), and Shift Agent on President Trump’s campaign. He worked in the New York City Field Office and is currently assigned to the Tampa Field Office.

Lt. Col. Ferris Garrett, USAF (Ret) was presented with the Out-Reach Service Medal for organizing and arranging a presentation from local First Responders for Sun City Center residents. His efforts resulted in the chapter receiving a National Law and Order Award.

In addition, LCDR John Glynn, USN (Ret) was presented with the MOWW Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his achievements as chairman of the 2016-2017 Sun City Center Annual Veterans Day Military Ball.

Larry Chambers Receives United States Naval Academy Distinguished Graduate Award

By Frank Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret.) The prestigious Distinguished Graduate Award (DGA) is given annually to a graduate of the United States Naval Academy nominated by a member of the Association and selected by the DGA Selection Panel.

There have only been two awards bestowed on the class of ‘52. They were both Astronauts (Jim Lovell and Tom Stafford). Retired Navy RADM Larry Chambers will be the third. He will receive a medal at the DGA Ceremony in March 2018 in Alumni Hall at the United States Naval Academy. The recipients of the Distinguished Graduate Award have demonstrated commitment to a lifetime of service and have made significant contributions to the U.S. Naval Academy, the Navy, the Marine Corps and the nation.

Larry and his wife Sarah currently reside at the Freedom Plaza retirement community in Sun City Center.

Sun City Center Veterans’ Annual Dinner Dance - “Viva Italiano”

The Sun City Center Annual Veterans’ Dinner/Dance will take place Saturday, March 3, 2018 in the CA’s Florida Room located in the Atrium. It is sponsored by the combined SCC military veterans’ organizations. A social hour with appetizers will start at 5 p.m. A three entrée buffet (chicken marsala, italian sausage & peppers, onion crusted salmon) by Banquet Masters with a great dessert bar to follow at 5:45 p.m.

Sandlin, USCG, the Commanding Officer of the Clearwater, Coast Guard air station will be the guest speaker at the Association of Naval Aviation’s local chapter luncheon on February 9, 2018. Captain Sandlin will be giving the audience an in-depth presentation of the actions of our local Coast Guard during our recent hurricanes. Lawrence Rivera Discusses Veterans Benefits with MOWW

By Frank Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret.) The featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) was Capt. Lawrence Rivera, USAR/ANG. The luncheon was held in the Freedom Plaza Club on December 21, 2017.

Larry Rivera was born in New York City and is a US Army veteran having served as an enlisted military policeman, a logistics and personnel Non-Commissioned Officer and as a US Army Captain, branched Infantry and Armor with service as an Infantry Company Commander, a recruiting company commander and battalion adjutant. He has served in the Active Army, the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard.

In addition, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Frank Zahrobsky, was presented with an Outreach Service Medal for his exceptional service in organizing National Security programs, which ultimately resulted in a National Chapter Award. Companion Vern Elarth was recognized for his efforts in organizing visits to Judge Michael Scionti’s 13th Circuit Veterans Treatment Court.

Mastering Mysterious Machu Picchu

By Kai Rambow After a short, steep climb, suddenly Machu Picchu was in front of us. Just like the pictures, only more dramatic.

Machu Picchu has perhaps the most stunning setting of any archaeological site.

A trip to Machu Picchu is highly recommended. Really good planning and preparation are needed to master this trip for several reasons: (1) Machu Picchu is not easy to reach. (2) The logistics are challenging. (3) The altitude can be problematic. You’re covered with this article.

The Peruvians smartly treasure their UNESCO World Heritage site. Only 2,500 are allowed to visit Machu Picchu each day, and recently added, every visitor must have a guide. If you’re with a tour group, you’re getting in.

There are several advantages to traveling with a tour group. Options range from a four day Machu Picchu only tour to a multiple day Peru trip, including this archeological marvel.

Group tour pricing begins from as low as $1,200 per person. We traveled with Gate 1 on their four-day / five-night trip and had a wonderful trip.

Our trip representatives helped us connect in Lima from the international arrivals to domestic flights. No need to figure this out by yourselves. Upon arrival in Cusco, gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, porters took our luggage to the bus.

The distance between Cusco and Machu Picchu is only about 70 miles.

Sounds short but takes approximately four hours due to changes in elevation and winding roads.

Over two hours later we arrived at our hotel. After a really early wake up call, we took a bus to Ollantaytambo, then a scenic rail trip to Agua Calientes. Inca Rail is the only real connection between these two points. In Agua Calientes, we connected to a local bus for a 30-minute drive up the mountain. Once there we started our walk up further to the site.

Time and patience is the easy part.

Each stage requires a separate ticket – with all of your passport, visa and personal details filled in. On our tour, these forms were all filled in for us, easing our logistics.

Could you figure out all of this by yourself? Yes, however, the only people we saw attempting this were backpackers or repeat visitors. I’d recommend making your life easier so you can concentrate your energy and focus on Machu Picchu.

Food “The juice is sour,” exclaimed one tour group member. Actually, it wasn’t. Food tastes differently here because it isn’t loaded with sugars and preservatives. It’s healthier and there are some wonderful new things to try. Alpacas make fine wool and a pretty tasty meal as well. It’s relatively easy to find and prepared in a number of ways.

Andean coffee is strong. It seemed everywhere we went coffee was either black or mixed with hot milk. The concept of mixing and preparing your own seems to be unknown. You may need to get creative to get coffee your way.

Drink bottled water only to stay healthy. Avoid ice. Most hotels will only use filtered or mineral water for ice cubes, but don’t assume. Check to ensure the water in your hotel is filtered for brushing your teeth.

A wonderful alternative to sodas is chi chi mora. This refreshing drink is made from purple corn. We ordered it with almost every meal. You’ll never think about corn the same way again.

Potatoes are indigenous to the Andes with over 4,000 varieties. Enjoy the ongoing surprise of never seeing the same type of potato twice during your trip. Vegetables tend to be fresh, however, to be safe, don’t eat them raw.

So avoid salads, and make sure your vegetables are cooked.

Tips for a Great Trip Background Preparation: Rather than trying to absorb everything in a few hours, get the Machu Picchu DVD (985.37) from the library. Inca engineering secrets are revealed in this recent (2014) one hour show. Consider this a must see.

Most Critical Tips: Stay healthy.

Altitude sickness can put a serious dent in your travel experience. Drink coca tea and chew the leaves. It smells and tastes like grass from your lawn, however, locals (SCC residents and Peruvians) swear by it.

When to Go: The best months to visit are May to October. We traveled in May avoiding summer crowds. Special thanks to our outstanding tour guides Saul Dalens B and Ruben Soto Vera for their invaluable assistance.

Once you reach Machu Picchu, your first view is this classic one.

SCC Resident of Distinction Fred Wiswal

By Ilona Merritt Once upon a time a wonderful man lived in our midst. A ver y quiet and very private man. A ver y generous man, both with his time, talent and money. He was born in the northeastern part of the United States in March of 1927. He studied hard in school and upon graduation went to work for one of the big automakers.

He spent his entire working life at the same company. He worked hard, saved his money and invested it very carefully.

He was married for only a very short time and never had a family. He picked his friends carefully. He liked elephants and collected them, he enjoyed a good Martini and dinner at Bern’s Steak House. He was 90 when he passed away on October 19, 2017. He died quietly, yet during his lifetime he left a legacy in Sun City Center.

Upon his retirement, this very quiet and private man came to Florida and lived in Tampa and then he moved to Coalition for Mental Health and Aging.

He became involved with the Samaritan Services where he donated his time and money for twenty (20) years. For Doris Ragland, the founder of the Samaritan Services he was her staunchest supporter and silent benefactor. With his vast knowledge of the auto industry he negotiated purchases of automobiles at phenomenal rates. For twenty years, he drove residents to medical appointments outside of Sun City Center and stayed with them no matter how long. He worked with Joe Auberger maintaining the Samaritan Services cars and they worked together with Meals on Wheels. The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, Lifepath Hospice and other worthy charities were also major recipients of this very private man. He was well liked by everyone and is sadly missed.

If Fred Wiswall planned to leave a legacy, no one will ever know, but he did leave a lasting footprint that will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched. Recently, it was announced the Hospice Resource Building on Upper Creek Drive will be named in his honor.

DANCING Attention All Singles

The Singles Social Dance Club will host two dances on Sunday, February 11 and Sunday, February 25. Dances are held in the Florida Room, Atrium Building. Music provided for your dancing and listening pleasure by Thor Stevens and his saxophone. Members $4; guests $6. BYOB and snacks. Proper attire requested (please, no shorts/ jeans). Membership drive ends in February. The cost for membership is $15.

Solo Line Dance Club

The Solo Line Dance Club had a good year with an increasing membership in 2017. Events such as the FunFest, Hi Neighbor, the Spring and Holiday luncheons were a success. Classes in 2018 will be held every Monday from 12:15 - 3 p.m. in the Community Hall on S. Pebble Beach Blvd. Mary Ware is the instructor for the absolute beginners and the improver dancers.

After a social break from 1:30 - 1:45 p.m., Nicki Kaukonen instructs the intermediate and more advanced dancers.

Membership is open to CA and KP members. Annual dues are $22 or you can pay $2 per session. Wearing comfortable clothes and shoes (no flipflops or sling-less sandals) is advised.

Stained Glass Club Artist of the Month is Gracie Swagel

Gracie was hooked on stained glass when she went to one of the FunFest events. Her first project that she made was a butterfly for her window. She then got interested in glass fusing. “You can get very creative and our teachers and experienced fusers are so helpful and make you feel so welcome”, says Gracie.

The Women’s Chorus of Sun City Center

By Janet Warren, president The Women’s Chorus of Sun City Center recently received a $2,200 grant from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay to support stipends for the director and accompanist and for the purchase of new music. Traditionally, all of the concerts provided by the chorus twice a year since 1963 have been free to the SCC community and all free will donations have been used for concert expenses and the purchase of music. 2018 Stained Glass Club Annual Show

The Sun City Center Stained Glass Club will hold their 8th Annual Glass Show on Thursday, February 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday February 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Florida Room, Atrium Building, 945D North Course Lane, SCC .

Members, from beginners to experienced artisans will display pieces in three categories including soldered, fused and specialty pieces. Artist of the Month Susan Corbett

The Art Club in Sun City Center has chosen Susan Corbett as Artist of the Month for February 2018. Sue works mostly in watercolor but also dabbles in acrylic, colored pencil, pastels and mixed media.

Her favorite subjects include flowers, sunsets and semi-abstracts. Sue believes in angels and her work is known for hidden angels. “The angels represent her many blessings.” Sue looks for the angels then paints around them so others can also view them. Her goal is to foster creativity with the hope of developing the artist within.

Her formal art training began at Paier School of Art in Connecticut. While studying with the late Jo Tarabula in Florida Sue discovered her passion for watercolor. Over the years, she has taught creative painting to children and creative watercolor to adults. Sue enjoys membership in the Sun City Center Art Club and the Kings Point Art League and serves as a liaison between the two clubs.

Twelve teams began the tournament and in the final match on the fourth day, it was the team of Ben Caudill, Carl Zajac and Fred Kalhammer winning over the team of Jim Blaine, Sally Mabesoone and Joe Mattia.

Archery Club

Kristin Schram joined the SCC Archery Club in November of last year. While the arrows aren’t in the center of the target, a small sight adjustment will fix that.

The ability to shoot such a tight group of arrows is a testament to Kristin’s skill and her following the instructor’s instructions while she was receiving her free archery lessons. If you would like to try archery (at no cost), contact club instructor Jerry Anderson at 330-206-7048. You need to be an CA Member to receive lessons. The Archery Club holds a monthly membership meeting on the fourth Friday of every month in the Caper Room at 2 p.m. All current CA Members are invited to attend.

By Garry Higgins The Suncoasters (ladies) Division of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club held its annual Pairs tournament recently. At the end of single knockout play, four teams had been eliminated leaving Cindy Higgins and Pam Davis up against Diann Thomas and Ava Casper. The match was decided by a measure in the 16th end. The Thomas / Casper team prevailed and are the 2018, Suncoasters Pairs Champions.

By Garry Higgins The 2018 Pebble Beach Triples Champions are Joe Mignogna (Skip), Jim Blaine (Vice) and Garry Higgins (Lead). The runners-up were Jon Blanchard, Larry Johnson and Gary Persinger. There were many exciting moments during the match, including the last end when Team Mignogna held their opponents to one point, giving them a thirteen to twelve win. Congratulations to both teams!

Who Plays Bridge? Jill & Don Mowry Do!

It was years ago - OK, decades ago that Don taught Jill to play bridge. But their bridge was not as hot and happy as the marriage so they decided to take ACBL lessons. As Don drolly remarked, “It opened our eyes a bit.” They quickly became an adroit bridge team; that rarest of bridge phenomena - a happily married couple who successfully plays competitive bridge together!

Imagine this: there was a time when Jill and Don had more red points than black!

When they lived in Pittsburgh the Ohio and Pennsylvania sectional tournaments were practically nonstop and relatively nearby; they played (and won!) often which resulted in that highly unusual black/red ratio!

Asked who is the stronger player Jill says without hesitation, “Don is, definitely.”

Don, looking astonished, interjects, “Uh, no. It is Jill.” Jill laughingly corrects him, “That is silly; everyone knows it’s you.” So I ask, “Well, who is the stronger bidder?”

Don immediately replies, “Jill!” Amongst laughter Jill admits that could be true but only because Don IS the stronger player. And that, right there, is likely the bedrock of their successful partnership; mutual admiration and generosity.

Jill’s best advice: 1. Remember, first place is not a trip around the world, 2. Do not overcall unless you have 2 face cards in that suit, 3. If you fuss at table, make amends as soon as you’re able.

Christian Women’s Connection Luncheon

Thursday, Feb. 8, at Club Renaissance, 2121 S. Pebble Beach Blvd., Sun City Center, the Christians Women’s Connection will host a luncheon. Inspirational speaker Linda Moore will share her story, “If it isn’t in the washer, it’s in the dryer! Dinner will be ready when the smoke alarm goes off!”

Fashions by Rose Boutique will also be featured this month. Seating begins at 11 a.m. with meal and program from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Chicken Florentine will be served or you may order the alternate chicken caesar salad when you make your reservation.

Beth Israel Program

Susan Weidman Schneider, the founder and editor of Lilith Magazine, will be joining us on Monday, Feb. 5 for some very special programs.

On Monday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Temple, Ms. Weidman Schneider will present a lecture entitled, “How We Tell Troubling Stories.” We say we want a “big tent” in our communities, under which we are all welcome. But we don’t always want to hear all the voices. For 41 years, one of Lilith magazine’s hallmarks has been to amplify these voices. Find out how. The cost for this program, which is open to the public, is $5 per person and will include refreshments.

Redeemer Women of the ELCA Meeting

Women of the ELCA, the women’s organization of Redeemer Lutheran Church, will meet on Wednesday, February 21 beginning with refreshments at 9:30. The program will be provided by Rev. Bill Cruz from Good Samaritan Mission, a local Christian ministry serving the poor.

Beth Israel Sisterhood Program

On Tuesday January 9, 2018 Mary Berg, Community Relations Specialist for A Kid’s Place addressed members of the Beth Israel Sisterhood and provided information about her organization. Their mission is to protect and care for neglected and abused children who have been removed from their homes. A Kid’s Place provides comfort and safety in a stable and nurturing environment at a critical time. Our priority is keeping groups of two or more brothers and sisters together while in foster care. Sisterhood members provided donations of body wash, laundry detergent pods or a new baby doll or action figure.

Hearing Loss Association Receives Interfaith Grant

By Jay Sparkman The Sun City Center Interfaith Social Action Council presented the Sun City Center Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America with a grant of $3,000 which will pay for a one year subscription to a CART service which provides a certified stenographer at the chapter’s meetings for transcription of spoken words into written words which will appear on a large screen at the front of the meeting room. SouthShore UCC Donates to Haven of Hope

Roselyn Cruthis, SouthShore United Church of Christ, presents a check to Janet Smith, President of Haven of Hope, in Ruskin. Haven of Hope is a faith-based, residential mission that helps women, who have been incarcerated for nonviolent crimes, change the course of their lives. Smith noted that the church also provided a “bountiful supply of fresh produce at Thanksgiving.” Haven of Hope is a year-long program with a 100 percent success rate for women who stay with it. Roselyn Cruthis and Janet Smith They receive no government funding, Haven of Hope depends on donations, grants and volunteers. Once they have a job, the women, themselves, help offset costs by contributing to the rent.

GSMobile Adult Education Receives Interfaith Council Grant

Samaritan Services are funded solely by charitable contributions from individuals, clubs, organizations, businesses and proceeds from fundraisers. Samaritan Services provides transportation for Sun City Center residents to doctor appointments out of town from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and in town for any reason from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Samaritan Services also coordinates Meals on Wheels for Sun City Center residents and has an Alzheimer’s Respite program and Alzheimer’s caregiver meetings. All Paths to God

The talents of the members of All Paths to God will be featured at the Concert and Sing along with pianist Tommy Johnson on February 9 from 4-6:30 p.m. Karen Gutelis and Sharon Axtell exhibit three of the items that will available for silent auction at this happy hour event. Eagle Audubon Society Showcases Expert on Herons and Egrets

Ann Paul, the Regional Coordinator for Florida Audubon, will speak on herons and egrets at the Thursday, February 15, 2018 Eagle Audubon meeting. Ann, a longtime supporter of Tampa Bay Coastal Bird Sanctuaries, is an expert on wading/ shore birds. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be held in The Banquet Room of Kings Point Main Clubhouse, 1900 Clubhouse Drive, SCC. Doors open at 1:20 p.m. for social and trip sign-up (for members) and refreshments. Kings Point February 15 Dinner Dance

Kings Point February 15 Dinner dance will be held in the Veterans Theater.

Playing for your listening and dancing pleasure is the Island Swing Band.

KPAL’s Artist of the Month for February, June Lohren

June Lohren was born in Brooklyn, NY. As a child she was influenced by her grandfather who was an artist, and by a cousin who illustrated children’s books. Ceraglass, in Hackensack, NJ gave June her first opportunity as a professional artist where she worked with renowned designer Ned Harris and Bob Wallach to create silk screened designs on drinking glasses and giftware. When June’s family moved to California, she was employed as Art Director for Reynolds Printasign Company, a worldwide organization that manufactured printing equipment. She was offered the position as designer for Capri of California and accepted. Her designs on drinking glasses and giftware were sold in department stores throughout the United States.

June also developed individual custom designs for Mercedes Benz, Universal Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Star Trek Enterprises and the City of San Francisco.

June studied painting at Art Center College in Los Angeles and UCLA. She was a member of the Santa Clarita Art League. After retiring to Florida and moving to Sun City Center, June joined the Kings Point Art League where she enjoys fellowship and many opportunities for continued learning. She lives in Kings Point with her lovely daughter, Donna, and their beloved little dog, Appletini, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. June’s painting of Appletini and several others will be on display at the Kings Point Art League in the North Clubhouse for the month of February.
