What Could Your Neighborhood Do With a Little Extra Money?

Submitted by the SCC Charitable Foundation Sun City Center Charitable Foundation Inc. launched the Great Neighborhoods Project to make our community an even better place to live. Our active retirement community is one of the most successful and we want to continue to build on its wonderful neighborhood qualities. The goal is to have Sun City Center looking its best to celebrate its 60-year anniversary in 2021 and for decades to come. For Phase 1, the Foundation is helping SCC Property Owner Associations (POAs) and residents without POAs to apply for Hillsborough grants and other forms of grants or assistance available to refresh or enhance our neighborhoods’ common areas. The Foundation is holding one-hour workshops on Monday, May 6, and Monday, May 13, at 1 p.m. in the CA Caper Room on both days to provide an overview of this project and provide more information about County grants uses and eligibility requirements. Robert Northrop, County Hillsborough County Forester will be our guest speaker on Monday, May 6, to discuss tree and shrub types and size of plantings for a successful landscaping effort.

Garrison Beck, County Environmental Scientist in charge of Adopt-A-Pond will be a guest speaker on May 13. Other neighborhoods are having POA and neighbor meetings to develop ideas that qualify for County grant programs. Each year Hillsborough County's Office of Neighborhood Relations offers mini-grants of up to $5,000 for projects aimed at bringing neighbors together and boosting community pride. The deadline for the mini-grant application is in August. Mini-grants can be used for a wide variety of projects. For more

CA Membership Meeting

By Ilona Merritt On Wednesday, March 20, the CA held its quarterly Membership Meeting in the Community Hall. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. Since there was no quorum at the December meeting, the October 24, 2018 minutes were approved. Certified Public Accountants, Carr, Riggs & Ingram had representatives there who stated that the audit was done as of December 31, 2018, and everything is in order, consistent from year to year. This report may be reviewed in the Library. The community Manager, Lyn Reitz, gave her report. All the residents’ dues are in. FunFest was great; we had huge attendance, and the volunteers did an excellent job. On the 4th of July, there will be breakfast available in the Community Hall. Ice cream will be given out on the main campus starting at 11 a.m. until the supply is exhausted. Karen Fredericks introduced the Seniors WrapAround Program. It is a process that can be best described as a collaborative, team-based approach to accessing services and life planning. The Seniors WrapAround program supports all seniors, aged 55+ and who have access to a few community or social supports – leaving them isolated and at higher risk of hospitalization or long-term care placement.

Movies are normally shown the second and fourth Monday each month in the Rollins Theater at 1 p.m. The dates and times may change as necessary. Per the Fire Code of Hillsborough County, seating capacity is limited to 145 attendees. Seating is reserved for Sun City Center Community Association members/guests who present current cards or a Kings Point ID badge.

SCCCA Welcomes “Gene Cannon” for Gazebo Concert

President’s Report By Sam Sudman, CA President A town hall meeting was held on April 24 to discuss the sale of the United Church of Christ. The membership was advised that the church had not accepted the CA’s offer by the deadline to purchase the property. Both parties continue to communicate. Details cannot be shared lest they jeopardize a final outcome, but please know that we are representing the members fiduciarily. Completion of the N. Pebble Beach crossing area opposite the CA offices has suffered a setback. The contractor for a specific phase has quit. There will be a slight delay until a replacement can be approved. There will be a Town Hall Meeting on May 9 at 4 p.m. in Community Hall for the next Golf Cart Mobility report. There will be a Hurricane Preparedness Meeting for CA members only on June 4 at 1 p.m. at Community Hall. You will need your CA membership card. Activity on the North Lakes Golf Course is that of Toro. Their lease with Club Link enables them to test new grass-cutting equipment. They have assumed maintenance of the golf course. Reclaimed water was hooked up for specific irrigation of grass varieties. The 301 Project has stalled: Astaldi Construction has defaulted. Working on transitioning. Still on target for 2020 completion. After dark and before light golf cart driving is alive and well, as is driving a golf cart on a pedestrian sidewalk and crossing 674 in a pedestrian crosswalk. The other evening, I observed a golf cart at 8:30 p.m., eastbound, on the path on the south side of 674 between S. Pebble Beach and Stoneham. Others report sightings at the Fitness Center in the evening (before daylight savings) and before dawn. We know that serious accidents occur between golf carts and much larger vehicles, occasionally resulting in death. If the County decides to end our golf cart privilege, we have gone too far. Those who have worked hard to establish good relationships with County staff will have little influence on preventing the loss of a privilege. Improvement often is accompanied by inconvenience and frustration. We live in a 60-year-old community where the roads may not be without dips and holes and the storm water pipes may be deteriorating. Repairs are made as quickly as possible, given that we are in a county-wide queue for funding. Please be patient and tolerant.

Gene Cannon will kick off the summer Gazebo Concert Series in Sun City Center on May 22 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Gene is a wellknown musician in the area who sings, as well as plays sax, flute, and guitar. His repertoire includes R&B, standards, pop, jazz, and more. The summer gazebo concert series has grown in popularity. The events were moved to evenings last year to take advantage of cooler temps, while still giving residents enough time to get home on golf carts before the sun sets. Hundreds enjoy the entertainment from lawn chairs or golf carts. It’s an enjoyable way to spend a summer evening. SCCCA gazebo concerts are sponsored by the Community Association, they are free, and open to SCCCA members. The gazebo is located on Cherry Hills Drive.

SCCCA Creates Official Facebook Page Are you on Facebook? The SCC Community Association now has an official Facebook page. It is “SCC Community Association”. The intent of this page is to disseminate information to SCCCA members regarding events, activities and pertinent information in our community. The purpose is to keep residents informed, rather than discuss topics. The site will be managed by members of the SCCCA Board of Directors, as well as several employees of the CA. “LIKE” the page to start getting these informative posts.

Board Discusses Properties and Roads

By Diane M. Loeffler The primary topics at the April 10 Board meeting were the church property, North Golf Course, Route 301 road work and Route 674 road work. Community Association (CA) President Sam Sudman thanked the CA’s Maintenance staff for recording the meetings. To view these recordings, go to the CA website, suncitycenter.org. Toro continues to test their equipment on the North Course property. They are also bringing in local reclaimed water for all irrigation. One person who lives along this golf course property says, “The North Course has never looked so good as it has since it was shut down.” All area residents are reminded that North Course is private property. Other than Toro employees, no one is to walk, bicycle, drive carts, or to be on the land in any manner. There are safety and liability issues. Our sixty-year-old community is receiving some much-needed repairs to its infrastructure including work being done on West Del Webb. Although everyone will be able to get to his or her home, we can expect some rerouting during the process. Sudman says, “Be patient and tolerant” during this time.

Construction on US-301 is stalled because a contractor defaulted. Sudman says, “The county says they are still on line to finish by the end of 2020.” Road work on SR-674 will begin once the utility work is completed. Community Manager Lyn Reitz informed us that Mary Jane Blakley recently passed away. Although you may not recognize the name, if you are a patron of our Sun City Center Library, you have met her. She has volunteered there for 27 years. Mark Your Calendars June 4 there will be a hurricane preparedness seminar offered at Community Hall on North Pebble Beach. July 4 there will be a breakfast at Community Hall followed by a pool party including karaoke. There will also be music at the bandstand, free ice cream while it lasts and a food vendor with hamburgers, corn dogs and other offerings. Other Business Funds were received from the sale of 45 homes during March. As of the end of that month, we had 11,347 residents. Guest passes are now $2 per day with no discount for extended stays.

The Lakes in SCC - Part II - Residents and Their Lakes

By Ilona Merritt The lakes were very special to the early residents of SCC, especially those who lived along the shorelines. They formed social clubs, yacht clubs, and developed guidelines for the care of their lakes. They stocked their lakes with fish and in one case with swans. When a problem developed, the lake residents found ways to take care of them. Middle Lake Association established Good Neighbor Rules and Practices in May 1977. An active appeal is made to every resident of Middle Lake to take an active part in this Association, to help keep the area surrounding the lake a most desirable place in which to live, with consideration for the rights and feelings of neighbors. Their concern was the wildlife. Box Socials were held, annual boat tours, dinner parties, and celebrations. Swan Lake, originally the watering hole for the cattle roaming here, it was made large, called Blanton Lake, then Bass Lake and finally became Swan Lake when two Swans were brought down from Chicago. In 1962, a house was $12,500 with $2,000 more for the lakefront. The residents around the lake took care of the swans. A female cygnet was born and the residents bought her a male companion but she fought with him so much they had to trade him for another. It cost the residents $360 a year to feed the swans. Glen Sweeney fed the swans and kept the food on his back porch. North Lake established Neighborliness rules: This guide is intended to help North Lake residents, to keep and improve the high standards of the lake. The list covered landscaping, clotheslines, and equipment, as well as rules regarding docks and ramps. Cleanliness of the lake, the islands, swimming, boating and not feeding of wildlife. In 1971, North Lake residents

established a Yacht Club which included a very busy social season. Dr. Wolthorn, a retired chemical engineer introduced the luminaries, a Christmas custom from Mexico. The committee liked the idea, appointed him chairman of a committee to work out the logistics and to organize the first lake-wide light display at Christmas time 1968. One thousand candles were needed for the luminaries, and this tradition carried on for many years. Simmons Lake was founded in 1960, but it was not until 1969 that the area south of SR-674 was developed. As early as 1969, Webb published its intentions for

Simmons Lake as a $1,800,000 addition to SCC. Five small lakes were planned instead of the magnificent 23-acre lake which now exists. 1974 Simmons Lake residents formed their own association. The purpose of the association is to promote and encourage a good neighbor relationship through understanding and cooperation for the general good of all Simmons Lake residents by issuing guidance of recommendations and suggestions providing social contacts between its members and checking of overall problems of the lake. Sun City Center Stained Glass Club News

Sheri and Lennie Fine of Sun City Center are the lucky winners of this beautiful stained glass panel that was created by Karen Ransbury and was raffled off at the FunFest on March 16. Lucky indeed! They won a stained-glass panel that was raffled at last year’s FunFest. Sheri was so excited that they won, she made a point of double checking their recently purchased lottery tickets. They weren’t quite as lucky with their Powerball tickets. She is happy to have her glass panel already hanging up in her kitchen window.

Sun City Center Stained Glass Club

The Sun City Center Stained Glass Club want to thank the community for coming to their annual glass show held on February 28-1 and voting for the “People’s Choice” award. That very special award was given to Cor Van Der Woude for his soldering masterpiece “Tree of Life”. Cor says he made the “Tree of Life” for his daughter-in-law, Erin. He started by laying the tree pattern on the glass to get the best sunburst look. Then he made the tree from quarter inch copper to give it strength, then put it in the frame to hang it up. He then added the branches and wrapped the copper wire with copper foil to give a three-dimensional look. He placed the sunburst glass and soldered it to the tree. He finally soldered all the copper and finished with a copper patina.

Swim Dancers Are Accepting New Members

Spring is the perfect time to try synchronized swimming. The Swim Dancers practice on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 and on Friday mornings from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Put on your suit, bring a towel and come jump in the water. If you are comfortable swimming a lap of the pool, they will teach you the rest. There are different levels of figures from easy to difficult, so there is something for everyone. Needlecrafters celebrated their annual spring luncheon April 11, saying hello to spring and goodbye to our snowbirds. It also happened to be Alice Miller’s 94th birthday. Alice is still an active member at Needlecrafters. She still crochets many of our towels and does plastic canvas items for domino players, hand and foot and bridge players. She is however not our oldest member. That distinction goes to Helen Iannazzi who will be 100 this summer. Helen is still an active member and loves to knit and do plastic canvas also. Come on down to the Needlecrafters Gift Shop, right next to the shuffleboard court. Summer hours M-W-F, 9-12.

Potters Wheel Donates to Samaritan Services

Terrie McNamara of the Potters Wheel Club of Sun City Center presents a check to Julie Floyd of Samaritan Services. Samaritan Services, a 501(c)3 charity, provides many support services needed by residents of Greater Sun City Center. They transport ambulatory residents to medical appointments between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Brandon, Bradenton and Tampa, with advance notice of 10 to 14 days. SCC Ride provides transportation for in-town appointments and shopping, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Samaritan Services also coordinate the Meals on Wheels program, and provide Alzheimer’s respite care. For Samaritan Services information call 813-634-9283. For SCC Ride, call 813-633-6111.

May Artist of the Month

The Art Club in Sun City Center has chosen MaryAnn Rowe as Artist of the Month for May 2019. Upon retiring in 2010 her interest in painting was nurtured in Community Education courses offered at the University of Michigan at Dearborn. MaryAnn found her niche painting with watercolor, oils, and acrylics. Merging elements from various media taps her creativity. Her paintings represent broad interests in animals, landscape, flowers and portraits. In 2017, she moved to Sun City Center where her she pursued the creative arts: pottery, weaving, quilting, and painting. As a member of the Art Club in Sun City Center weekly classes in watercolor and oils enable her to perfect her style. Two entries in 2019 Annual Art Show “SmArt & Classy” were awarded first place ribbons in the beginner oil and water media categories. As a veteran, MaryAnn is proudest of years of service dedicated to the Army National Guard where deployments took her to Panama, Iraq, Germany, and Egypt. The background acquired in the service enriched the experience and knowledge she brought to the pursuit of careers in education, medicine administration, and photojournalism. Thank you for your service to our country. By Diane M. Loeffler Florida loves to throw a party. There are festivals and expos somewhere in central Florida nearly every weekend. The Chalk Festival may well be one of the most visually pleasing of all them. This year’s Chalk Festival theme was “The Chalk of the Town.” The event is usually held in Venice, but this year it was on

Some artists came from as far away as Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy. Lines crept past the works of art. Some onlookers asked the artists about their creations. A handful of the chalk drawings needed to be viewed from a specific place to see the 3D effect. A few artists set up lenses mounted so that observers could get the full effect.

South Hillsborough Veterans Clinic Scheduled to Open May 21

Located at 12920 Summerfield Crossing Boulevard, at the corner of US-301, the 50,000-squarefoot clinic expects to serve more than 10,000 Veterans residing in Riverview, Ruskin, Sun City Center, Gibsonton, Wimauma, and Apollo Beach. The medical team will be led by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patricia Mossop; and the services provided will include: primary care including women’s primary care, radiology, audiology, dietary and mental health counseling, laboratory, pharmacy, physical medicine and rehab, respiratory therapy, social work, prosthetics, telehealth, podiatry, and patient advocacy.

While there are no geographical restrictions on where Veterans may receive care, patients of providers moving from the Primary Care Annex to the new South Hillsborough clinic and existing Haley patients will be given priority. His office contacted the Community Association Office on April 5 asking if he could address area residents on April 8. The topic was one that concerns most senior citizens, the cost of medicine. During his visit, Governor DeSantis announced his plans to reduce the cost of drugs. He was accompanied by two state

legislators who are sponsoring bills to lower the costs of prescription medication: Senator Tom Leek and Representative Aaron Bean. Under these plans, prescription drugs would be purchased from safe, reliable sources in Canada. The last governor to visit Sun City Center was Rick Scott on January 23, 2018. At that time, Scott gave the Governor’s Veterans Service Medal to 628 Florida veterans

Two Every Day Questions

The old rhyme says April showers bring May flowers. For me, May also brings a birthday. To hear my mom tell it, I was scheduled to be a June baby, but chose to make an early entrance into this place we call the world. Since then, I’ve been telling stories and trying to figure out what to do with the opportunity inherent in every new day. I’ve listened to pastors and rabbis, philosophers, teachers, authors, songwriters, speakers, family, and friends. I’ve heard life is “all about” family or faith, about happiness or love or achievement. About being a “better version” of myself, or about “finding my passion.” And maybe life really is about all of those things, especially at different times. But, right now, if I had to explain the best way to do life, I think my answer would probably come down to a pair of questions I ask my two younger boys every evening at dinner: “What did you learn today?” and “Who did you help today?” Making a daily attempt to learn something and help someone is

a recipe for a pretty good day. Throw in some good music, good conversation, a nice meal, and a cold beverage, and you have the makings of a very good day, indeed. String together enough of those days, and you build a pretty good life. Thing is, some days you just don’t get there. Some days are filled with stress, broken things we can’t fix, unwelcome surprises, and calls from the doctor that don’t go so well. Some days are filled with arguments, flat tires, and ants in the kitchen cabinets. On days like that, you may still want a cold one, but you probably don’t want someone to phone up, asking for a hand with something. When life lands on you with both boots, it’s tough to feel helpful or inspired. I think, maybe, that’s why so many of us are mesmerized by sunsets. They’re beautiful all on their own, sure; but they also feel like promises painted across the sky by a light we know will be there for us tomorrow, even if the weather forecast calls for rain. Fulfilled promises are hard to come by in this life, but as opportunities go, the promise of a new day is a pretty good one. So, as I ponder the beginning of yet another trip around the sun, I find comfort in the notion that, maybe, I will know a little more than I did yesterday, and I will have a chance to give someone a reason to smile. Any adventure or opportunity beyond that is a bonus.

And, speaking of opportunity The News is looking for a few enthusiastic, curious people to join our volunteer team of reporters, correspondents, and photographers. Choose the stories or events you wish to cover each month, and contribute based on you interests. The only requirements are that you turn in your work on time, and you show up to one meeting a month. While

previous writing experience is not required, I know there are some reporters, writers, editors, and photographers reading this who would enjoy a fun, new challenge. So, if you live in one of the local communities we cover, and you want to share what you love about it or what makes life fun and interesting for you, contact me at “editor@ soco.news”. The Sun City Center Photo Club welcomes members and their guests to attend their May program to be held in the Caper Room, located in the Atrium Building on May 14, at 6:30 p.m. Our guest speaker will be professional photographer, teacher and judge, Christine Cook. Christine has earned awards both nationally and internationally. She teaches at the Naples Botanical Gardens and Florida Camera Club Council. She teaches photography and Photoshop to children at the Naples Art Association and also makes presentations to camera clubs throughout the state. She developed a judges’ certification program that has helped to provide qualified judges for local and state competitions. TOPIC: Digestive Health: from Cancer Prevention to Probiotics Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the Caper Room, Atrium Building, 954 North Course Lane. After all the overgrown bushes were pulled the new sign created and crafted by Captain Gary Kimball was put into place. Perhaps many of us may remember the blue and white plastic strips which members hung onto their personal lamppost to let the community know that they were active members of the Security Patrol. They were cut from white and blue acrylic by member Fred Fiedler, now Chief of the Patrol. When a new sign was needed Gary Kimball, Captain of team 30, and a member of the Sawdust Engineers, stepped up to the plate. He used the leftover acrylic and created the sign. It was a very challenging piece of work, to cut out the curves and letters out of the blue acrylic and then line everything evenly spaced onto the white acrylic. GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club, Inc. enjoyed learning how to make bud vases at their March meeting, taught by Amalia and Migdahia the staff from The Sun City Center Flowers & Gifts. They welcomed one new member Mary Starrett, making the total number of members for the 20182019 year 186. This year the club made over $1,743 at the FunFest, one of their annual Fundraisers. This money added to other donated funds throughout the year will be used to give grants to organizations in the community who serve those among us in need. We would love to have all Women in Sun City Center and Kings Point to come join a hardworking and fun club helping our community.

Art Club in Sun City Center’s May Demo Artist

The Art Club in Sun City Center is featuring an oil painting demonstration by Florida artist Cory Wright on Monday, May 20 at 1 p.m. in Rollins Theater. Influenced by her grandmother who was a sculptor, Cory began drawing and painting as a very young girl. By age fifteen, she had begun to paint professionally by applying paint to wall surfaces, working with interior designers, builders, and home owners to create large-scale murals and custom faux finishes. She earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and, while in college, also studied in Rome, Italy, through the school’s European Honors Program. In 2011, she attended an intensive 10-day plein air oil painting workshop in Italy and became passionately interested in painting the landscape outdoors. In 2013, she began showing her work at local studios, and in 2016 opened the doors of Cory Wright Art Gallery & Studio in Palmetto, Florida. Her paintings are now part of numerous national and international private collections. This demonstration, which will follow the club’s brief monthly membership meeting, is open to all SCC Community Association and Kings Point members.

Rays Announcer Addresses SCC Men’s Club

By Jay Sparkman. Orestes Destrade, in his seventh season a pre-game and postgame host for RAYS LIVE!, was guest speaker at the April luncheon meeting of the Sun City Center Men’s Club. Mr. Destrade spent 15 seasons in pro baseball as a designated hitter, first baseman, and outfielder with the Yankees, Pirates, Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League, and the Miami Marlins. Mr. Destrade, prior to joining Fox Sports TV for the Rays games worked for ESPN, XM Radio, and ESPN Radio. Using a mixture of humor, baseball history, and personal history, Mr. Destrade’s presentation was warmly received by the full house of Men’s Club members. Emergency Squad Hosts “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”

Information Meeting on Volunteering May 8 The Sun City Center Emergency Squad is hosting an Open House at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month as an Information Meeting for prospective volunteers. The meeting will take place at the Training Building at 124 S. Pebble Beach. With this meeting, we invite interested residents to find out more about the Squad and the volunteer opportunities we have available. The Squad is always looking for volunteers who want to become Dispatchers, Emergency Medical Responders, Ambulance Drivers and Emergency Medical Technicians. Other volunteer positions the Squad has available include IT specialists, vehicle maintenance volunteers, cooks and front desk receptionists. Each year the Squad provides Basic Life Support (BLS) emergency services to the community. In 2014, the Squad made almost 5000 ambulance runs and approximately 2000 medical wheelchair van runs. All of the Squad’s services are free, including blood pressures that are offered daily at the office from 8AM to 5PM.

Nearly New Shop Student Volunteers Recognized

The students attend Lennard, East Bay, and Middleton. Students receive community service hours which can be of great help when students begin applying for college scholarships and other post high school opportunities.

The teen studio will be facilitated by the FCC partnership with the Tampa Art Museum.

BJ and Carol Braden’s 1973 Dodge C600 truck was a big hit with the crowd at the Roamin’ Oldies April 4 cruise-in. About nine feet tall and 6,000 pounds of big, and so admired it was voted cruiser of the month. The one-time Virginia lumber hauler was found as just a wellpreserved cab and frame, and built up from there. Shortened by 5-1/2 feet, fitted with a pickup bed, treated to a complete cab restoration and engine rebuild, and painted an eye-catching bright blue finish, it is a one-of-a-kind treat for automotive enthusiasts everywhere it goes. The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month, with a rain date the following Thursday, at the Mira Bay Village Shopping Center on US-41 in Apollo Beach. The grant will provide funding for one visually impaired person to attend the Guide Dog Student Training Program where he or she will be matched with a guide dog. Campaign Against Human Trafficking-SouthShore (CAHT)

Snowbird Volunteers Flying North: Replacements Needed

The Nearly New Shop in the Sun City Center Plaza is the fundraising department of the Sun City Center Interfaith Social Action Council and is staffed totally by volunteers. The Shop is very fortunate to have Snowbirds volunteer during the winter months and help with the many tasks needed to prepare donated goods for sale. When spring and summer arrive the Snowbirds head to their northern homes and the Nearly New finds the need for volunteers to fill the gaps. The Nearly New Shop must fully operate in order for the Interfaith Council to be able to provide grants to organizations and to fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Lennard and East Bay high schools. Apollo Beach Woman’s Club Bus Tour

In March, the Apollo Beach Women’s Club (ABWC) and friends attended the 3rd Annual ABWC Bus Trip fundraiser. This year’s bus tour was to Savannah GA., Beaufort SC, and Jekyll Island. A great time was had by all who attended! Proceeds from the trip were donated to the ABWC’s College Scholarship Fund to help high school students in Apollo Beach and the surrounding areas with a demonstrated financial need.

Women’s Organization Welcomes Founder in SCC

On April 11, the CEO of S.W.A.T. Networking, Dr. Robyn Spirtas attended the Sun City Center chapter luncheon. The members and guests were excited to hear from the founder of the organization at their April meeting. Dr. Robyn, as known by the SWAT members, enjoys providing a place for women in business to gather and support one another. The group formed in 2009 in Manatee County and opened its Sun City Center location last year. They joined the Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce and have been enjoying monthly meetings at the Life Enrichment Center at the United Methodist Church the last several months. SWAT, which stands for Successful Women Aligning Together, is open to all women in business. Emergency Squad New Emergency Medical Responders

The Emergency Squad is pleased to announce its newest Emergency Medical Responders from its April class. Emergency Medical Responders go through 54 hours of training including 8 hours of CPR class. They must pass CPR in order to become an EMR. After finishing the class, all the volunteers go through mentoring before working on the ambulance or wheelchair van. The EMR is responsible for recording the patient’s medical history, medications, allergies and preparing the Patient Care Report in conjunction with the EMT. They also must be prepared to assist with any patient care as requested by the EMT.

Manning the Phones and Making the Meals for “The Squad”

By Diane M. Loeffler Your spouse or friend has fallen. You quickly realize that you are not able to help the person, so you call the Sun City Center Volunteer Emergency Squad at 813 634-3800. You breathe a sigh of relief when someone answers, asks a few relevant questions, and tells you that help is on the way. The “someone” who answers your call is a dispatcher. Dispatchers do not need any medical background. As with most of the Squad volunteers, dispatchers are assigned to a team. Team four dispatcher Linda Kalpin once worked as a paralegal and Cricket Fraser was a teacher. The Squad trains them to be dispatchers. Cricket Fraser says, “For four nights I attended training at our training center on South Pebble Beach from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. After that was mentoring. I sat in with someone else for a while. We work for five hours every eight days. Some of us substitute when people are sick or on vacation, especially when the snowbirds are away.” “The Emergency Squad is very organized. There are specific sheets for every call and for every type of situation. When the phone rings we answer, ‘Emergency Squad. What is your medical emergency?” Kalpin says she likes working at the Squad because, “I like being of service to the

SCC Players Participate in Tennis Classic

Sun City Center residents Edna Carlin and Debbie Zieg were excited to participate in the 2019 32nd Annual Morning Star School Tennis Classic held on March 23 and 24 at Carrollwood Country Club. The proceeds from the tournament will be used to benefit elementary and junior high age children with autism and other learning disabilities. SCC Pickleball Club Dinking Tournament

Pickleball Dinking Tournaments have become a popular contest in Sun City Center. Saturday, April 13, Pickleball Club members competed in a game using only the pickleball technique known as “dinking”. Dinking is a soft hit of the ball which drops abruptly to the ground once it’s over the net. Called the soft game, it requires players to use finesse, patience and a gentle touch. One of the highlights of the lawn bowling season is the final playoff for the overall Club Singles Champion. This year it was the current Women’s Singles Champion, Cindy Higgins meeting the Men’s Singles Champion, Phil Griffin. This matchup attracted many spectators. It was a great game to watch. Cindy Higgins prevailed, getting the win and was awarded the Club Singles Championship trophy. The Sun City Center Table Tennis Club held a fun doubles tournament on March 27. Twelve members took part in the tournament. The Caloosa WGA 18 Hole League Championship was held on Monday and Wednesday, April 8 and 10. There were five flights in the 36-hole gross tournament. Bobbie Cesarek was the overall Champion with a score of 161. Mary Jane Stutz won for Blue tees flight I division, Joyce Stafford won for Blue tees flight II, Joan Roberge won for Green tees flight I and Patty Hersey won for Green tees flight II. A delightful reception followed the final day of play.

By Kai Rambow The Jewelers’ Building, completed in 1927 and facing the Chicago River, has a distinct look that grabs your attention. Behind the unique look is an interesting story. For many years, one elevator transported cars to the first 23 floors, enabling jewelers to safely transfer and transport their valuable merchandise. The only way to discover this is on an architectural tour. The best part: you can do this seated comfortably on a large boat with great views. Chicago is considered to be one of the world’s best cities for architecture with a terrific mix of different styles. JJ, our narrator, provided enthused commentary to help us understand what we were seeing. Here are a few sneak peeks at what you can expect to discover during a tour. The Overlooked Streets You’ll never think about it

If you love architecture, this is a cool step back in time with modern amenities. You can often snag a really good rate and it’s one short block from the river.

Military News Tina Patch addresses MOAA on CBD products

Frank Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret.), Military Correspondent Tina Patch, creator of a company called MJ Natural Resources, was the featured speaker at the April 3 Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) luncheon held in the Florida Room at the North Side Atrium. During her time at her corporate job, it became clear that a beloved family member was abusing Opioid pills, which subsequently led to heroin use. Having struggled through the anger, disappointment and then fear, Tina went on a mission to find Tina Patch, founder of MJ Natural the help that this family member Resources; LTC Benny Blackshire, needed. After it became USA (Ret), President of SCC MOAA. apparent that there were few resources for optimal treatment, Tina wanted to tackle that issue head on! Then The CATE Foundation was created. MJ Natural Resources which educates and sells THC free medicinal hemp derived CBD products. “Our mission is to keep our price to consumers low but our quality high! We believe in EDUCATING our consumers NOT just selling a product. Her presentation was very educational regarding CBD products, their derivation and what to look for from the manufacturers when anticipating purchasing them. Kings Point Veterans Theater, 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2019 Sun City Center will again observe the traditional Memorial Day Ceremony starting at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 in the Veterans Theater in the Kings Point Clubhouse, 1900 Club House Dr., Sun City Center. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for open general attendance seating. The public is invited. All guests with invitations for reserved seating are requested to be seated not later than 9:45 a.m. This ceremony is sponsored by the combined military veterans’ organizations of Sun City Center and is supported by the joint efforts of many participating community service organizations. The focus of this Memorial Day ceremony is to honor all former community military veterans who have died since May, 2018. The veterans will be recognized by a Military Roll Call of Departed Comrades held concurrently with Sun City Center’s traditional Living Flag Tribute. Our guest speaker will be DJ Reyes, a retired US Army Colonel with over 33 years of faithful service to our great Nation. DJ has commanded or served in primary staff positions in special operations, military intelligence, infantry, airborne, air assault, Joint/ Interagency, and Multinational organizations. His combat and contingency deployments included tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Haiti. As a Community Advocate for Veterans issues at the local, state and national levels, DJ recently served as a DoD contractor in assisting Gulf Coast region veterans, Guard and Reserve with meaningful employment and useful Career Counselling. COL Reyes is currently the Senior Veteran Mentor/Coordinator for Florida 13th Judicial Circuit Veterans Treatment Court.” A musical interlude and tribute to the military services will be provided by the Trinity Baptist Church Choir directed by Rev. James Feist. Colors will be presented by the Hillsborough Co. Sheriff’s Office. The Grand Marshall will be Sergeant Jim Glass, USMC, who will be placing the wreath at the flagpole outside the auditorium assisted by members of the Ruskin Boy Scout Troop 661. Sergeant Glass was born on 21 November 1930 in Baltimore, MD. He received his draft notice during November 1950 and enlisted in the Marine Corps reporting to Paris Island in January 1951. After further training as a mortar man at Camp Pendleton, Jim shipped out of San Diego on a 16-day cruise to Kobe, Japan. Then to Pusan, Korea, where he was assigned as a clerk in a regimental intelligence section. After moving to SCC during December 1997, Jim organized and founded the SCC Leathernecks Club during 2002, and remained as its Commander until 2012. As part of our annual tribute to our deceased veterans and showing the great spirit of Sun City Center patriotism, the Sun City Center Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution arranges for and funds the display of U.S. flags on State Route 674.

MOWW Receives Grant From SCC Interfaith Council

By Jay Sparkman The SCC Chapter, Military Order of the World Wars, recently received a grant for $4,000 from the SCC Interfaith Social Action Council to help with the funding of participation in a Youth Leadership Conference. Their summer through fall offerings include theater trips, dinner theater, a Starlite dinner cruise, trips to a tea rooms, restaurant outings, a zoo trip, a nature park, festivals and musical performances including orchestras. Kings Point’s North Clubhouse. Bus trip schedule books are usually available on a stand near the office. There are no membership fees. You sign up for a trip. If enough people register for the same trip, you will receive a phone call telling you that the trip is “a go” and asking you to pay then. Their summer and fall trips include symphonies, craft fairs, plays, museums, concerts, restaurants, shopping areas, craft fairs, festivals, museums and baseball games. Glory Tours also offers several overnight trips including Nashville, Biloxi, New Orleans, Sanibel Island and Helen, Georgia where there is a huge Octoberfest. Community Church College will have a new location and a new name. They are moving to The United Methodist Church at 1201 Del Webb Boulevard West. Their bus trips will resume in the fall. The Kings Point Cloggers recently joined with the Sun City Center Cloggers to perform for the residents of Cypress Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care. Big Change for Kings Point Mixed Chorus

The Kings Point Mixed Chorus proudly presented their spring 2019 concert, “Rodgers & Hammerstein Remembered” under the Direction of Jeff Jordan, with Keith Rasmussen accompanying. Cabaret seating in the Kings Point Theater was sold out, with overflow audience in the bleachers. The one “sour note” in this concert was that it was the last for these two talented gentlemen. Due to the increasing demands of their “day jobs,” they reluctantly have been forced to give up their commitment to the Kings Point Mixed Chorus. This “dynamic duo” has been the inspiration of this group for the past couple of years and we cannot thank them enough for their efforts on our behalf. As disappointed as the Chorus is to see them leave, we are excited to announce that we have chosen their replacements. Sharon Henry is our new Director and Valerie Southwell will accompany. We welcome them into our ranks and look forward to continued success in the future. Our new season will begin on September 9 at 12:15 p.m. in the Kings Point North Clubhouse, when we will begin rehearsal for our annual Holiday Concert. On April 7, one-hundred relatives and friends were to leave Kings Point clubhouse by bus and set sail on the Oasis of the Seas out of Port Canaveral to celebrate Kline Locher’s 100th birthday. Since the Oasis was damaged in dry dock, a non-cruise BYOB and potluck party was quickly organized by Don Wright in the Waterside party room at Kings Point Clubhouse. Music and dancing followed. Another cruise to celebrate Kline’s 100th birthday is planned for December 8 on the Allure of the Seas.

KP Pottery Club Dance was Great Success

The Kings Point Pottery Club dance and silent auction, held March 27, proved to be a highlight of the year. Advance tickets sold quickly and the full house was treated to a night of great entertainment by Eric Lee. In addition, a silent auction for over 30 gift baskets was held. The winners went home with wonderful prizes and got significant bargains. On top of everything else, one lucky winner at each table won a beautiful centerpiece made by a member of the Pottery Club. The event was so well received that the Pottery Club is planning on making this an annual event. To all those who attended we are glad you had a great time. For those who didn’t, you can look forward to next year. Again, thanks to all who participated and made this a great success.

When it comes to fun businesses, selling comic books, games and toys ranks up there with the best of them. That’s exactly what The Comics Club in Brandon, Fla., has been doing for since 1989. For D.J. Stamper, owner of The Comics Club, it just gets better and better with each passing year. “It’s a golden age for comic books, comic book-related movies and television shows, and for entertainment retailers like me who get to be at the center of it all at our comic shops,” said Stamper. According to Stamper, it was in early 1989 that he made the decision to start a mail-order business selling comic books to fans and collectors. Starting with 3,000 comic books from his own collection, Stamper grew the business year-by-year, accumulating an ever-growing inventory of comic books and other collectibles. When his inventory reached 20,000 comics, in 1994, he launched The Comics Club into the retail world with a brick and mortar store. Today, his inventory has expanded to more than 120,000 comic books, plus thousands of graphic novels, as well as hundreds of games and toys. “My love of comic books, especially the amazing artwork that the medium is known for, has been part of my life since I was a child growing up in Michigan. I have spent my adult life as a selfprofessed comic book pusher, trying to get as many people as possible involved in this great fun hobby,” says Stamper. In celebration of its 30 years in

Veterans Fair Draws Tremendous Response

By Kai Rambow “I went all the way around, and I probably stopped at ninety percent of the tables,” commented wheelchair-bound veteran, Patrick Clarahan. “Just about every table, people were very easy to talk to. There were a few tables at which I had to wait, but it wasn’t that bad.” The wait was due to the tremendous response from community veterans. Hundreds showed up to learn about services available to them. Pam Smith-Beatty, a 21-year veteran herself, is the Women Veterans

Guevara with The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay shared how very few veterans knew about their center. “It is the epicenter for crises or referral. We answer the 211 calls, the substance abuse hotline, and the suicide prevention line.” Just about any question related to mental health and well-being can probably be answered by this center. More importantly, they can let veterans know where to find help. Clarahan was enthused to learn about some extracurricular activities that should help him get out of the house more.

“Thanks to The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Our Lady’s Pantry is receiving more than 8,000 additional pounds of food to share with folks every month,” says Tom Bullaro. Bullaro, who is co-director of Our Lady’s Pantry, explains that TEFAP, which falls under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is part of a long-term disaster recovery plan from Hurricane Irma. “We will receive another 8,000 pounds of non-perishable foods every month until July,” he says. “These deliveries ensure that the boxes we distribute each Saturday morning will be full and our clients in need of food will not go hungry.” If you need extra groceries and live in Balm, Wimauma, or Sun City Center, please be sure to stop in some Saturday morning for a big box of food. Kindly bring along some proof of your address, such as an electric bill, the first time you come. You will be given a Pantry Identification (ID) Card to bring with you on future Saturday mornings. You will be assigned to one of two groups, who come for food on alternate Saturdays between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. When you arrive, you simply show your ID card, sign in, and you will be given a ticket for food. You get your car and drive up to our porch and hand our volunteer your ticket. He will then load a big box of food into your car.

Social Action Council Offers Grant to Haven of Hope

The Sun City Center Interfaith Social Action Council recently presented Haven of Hope a $5,000 grant to be used to help women who have been released from prison. When a woman arrives at Haven of Hope, she receives a gift basket of personal hygiene items along with food and clothing. Haven of Hope also provides emotional and spiritual support with classes and personal mentors who meet with the ladies each week to provide guidance and encouragement. By Peggy Burgess “Sister Act” and “Sister Act II” were movies we all enjoyed, and “Sisters”, the song from Irving Berlin’s classic “Holiday Inn,” is one we all remember. Who could forget the Bing Crosby/ Danny Kaye rendition? A new musical show in town called “Sister Act” recently graced the Freedom Plaza stage to the delight of our residents. So, it seems fitting to mention Freedom Plaza’s own female siblings. We could label this saga “Sister Act Times Two” for it features two sets of sisters who currently reside at Freedom Plaza: Alice Burgess ( no relation to the writer) and Dorothy Cadmus; Charlotte Fernandes and Dorothy Nobels. Chapter One: The sisters, Burgess and Cadmus, were born Alice and “Dot” Redsecker in Baltimore, Maryland. When their

father’s company transferred him to its New York City office the family moved to New Jersey, where the girls graduated high school. Alice, older of the two, continued her education at Scudder College of New Jersey and attained a position in the N.Y.C. financial district. Dot attended Westminster College in Maryland, majoring in home economics (now called “domestic engineering”), but left after her sophomore year. Her mother was ill with cancer and her grandmother, who lived with the family, had suffered a stroke: Dot was needed at home to help Alice, who was working, manage the household and care for its members. (Dot did, however, go back to college in later years and earn that domestic engineering degree– after keeping house for 20 years, having five children and teaching three daughters to cook and sew! Fast-forward 10 years to find Alice now married and living in Falls Church, Virginia. Her husband, John L. “Jack” Burgess, is an electrical engineer with I.T.&T. (International Telephone and Telegraph Company) but will ultimately be employed designing satellite computer systems. As they have no children, Alice has time to do volunteer work for her church and for the League of Women Voters. Dot has married Ray Cadmus,

a mechanical engineer with I.B.M. (International Business Machines) and they live near Kingston, N.Y. They “share” their five children with Alice and Jack through frequent visits. Ray and Jack, speaking the same tech lingo and even working briefly for the same company, have become true brothers. (Alice says that in any controversy it was always “the guys vs. the gals”). In 2012, Ray Cadmus developed health problems and it was time to seek a lifestyle where

appropriate help was at hand when needed: Freedom Plaza filled the bill, and they moved in. Alice, by now widowed, was not far behind them, acquiring an apartment on the same floor. Ray Cadmus died in March of this year, but Dot still has family just steps from door: her sister. They engage separately in their activities of interest, but usually meet for dinner and never fail to call and say “goodnight.” Next month: Part II of Freedom Plaza’s “Sister Act.” Don’t miss it!

Multi-Cultural Heritage Club

By Paula Lickfeldt The Multi-Cultural Heritage Club was formed in May of 2017. The founders wanted to have a club whose purpose was to know about, embrace, and celebrate other cultures from their own. They understood that “all are one,” and it was time to come together to celebrate diversity. They applied to the CA to be a sanctioned club and the CA granted their request. The Club meets on the second Friday of the month from 12 noon until 2 in the Atrium Caper Room. Usually a guest speaker is present to speak to the group. One of the meetings was an informational talk about Human Trafficking. The purposes of the meetings are education and friendship. At the present time, the club has 98 members. Anyone living in Sun City Center, Kings Point, Sun Towers, Freedom Plaza, or Aston Gardens is eligible for membership. Yearly dues are $15 for a single and $20 for a couple. The club will host its first international trip in November of this year. A Carnival ship will set sail from Tampa, Florida to Havana Cuba and Cozumel, Mexico. their outreach programs. The semi-formal gala held in December is one of the yearly fund raisers of the club. They also have a Gumbo Day, which is a meet and greet in October. Organizations that they support include The Boys and Girls Club, Brookwood which is a stateowned facility for girls age 8-16 who have been taken from their parents, Bridges for Africa which is a group that sews T-shirts for the youth and Guadalupe Wimauma Initiative Project. The club is looking ahead to 2020. They are planning a trip to Alaska and they are going to host an empowerment symposium. “Let My Voice Be Heard” is the title of the symposium. Creative Person: Renee Vickery Chinese Brush Painter

By Paula Lickfeldt Renee Vickery was a qualified, registered nurse in the UK working for ten years after which she taught art and design at Lancaster University and eventually became a health educator in several colleges teaching pre-nurses and childcare students also in the United Kingdom. She met and married Ellis Finkelstein, an American, who was a probation officer in Plymouth. Ellis had been in the Peace Corps in Sarawak Borneo. The two of them sailed off to Southeast Asia where they lived for the next fifteen years. While living in Asia, Ellis taught classes offered through the University of London and they both taught at the

English Language Center in Kuching, Sarawak Malaysia. Renee was educated in the art of Hard Edge as per Roy Litsztentein and Andy Warhol in 1969 in Britain. While in Southeast Asia, Renee studied Chinese Brush painting at Nanyang Academy of Fine Art, Singapore and learned Chinese Calligraphy at the University in Taiwan. Renee infuses her contemporary brush stroke painting with a water color technique which brings an energy and flow to her modern impressionist paintings. Renee has exhibited in Singapore, Taiwan and Sarasota, Florida. Her work hangs in Europe also. While in Singapore, learning Chinese Brush Painting, her

teacher spoke no English and she spoke no Mandarin. She said she knew when she had done something that he did not like. The teacher would look at the work, shake his head and say “dirty” one of the few English words that he knew. Several years ago, Renee and Ellis moved to the United States. They first lived in Sarasota. While in Sarasota, Renee taught adult enrichment classes and did workshops at Keeton’s office and art supply in Bradenton. About a year ago, the couple moved to Sun City Center, and the SCC Art Club invited Renee to demonstrate her fantastic art at the Rollins Theatre. Renee has been a member of the American Sumi-e Society for ten years. She teaches classes at the Kings Point art room

every Monday afternoon. The classes use the Chinese brush stroke technique. Initially the supplies needed for the class are provided by Renee but she tells the students to wear clothes that they don’t mind getting paint or stain on. Enthusiasm is required as students get a “taster”/ “starter” class which is a “how to do” class. Next comes the intermediate class where the students paint traditional Chinese motifs, and then it is on to advanced classes where they work on landscapes. Victoria joined Southwest Florida Rheumatology in November 2017. She graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and later graduated with Honors from Nova Southeastern University’s Physician Assistant program with a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences. She is licensed as a Certified Physician Assistant by the state of Florida. She is an active member of Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and PA Victoria Capezza Florida Society of Rheumatology. Victoria worked for 1 year in the field of Neurology in Tallahassee, FL and then moved back to central Florida. Victoria grew up in Plant City, Florida, the Winter Strawberry Capital of the world, and she likes to spend time with her parents whenever she gets the chance. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, reading, writing, and exercising. Victoria has quickly fallen in love with rheumatology and is excited to be practicing medicine here and giving back to the community.

Garage Sale? Why Are You Selling Your Garage?

By Bailey and Paula Lickfeldt Hi, my name is Bailey. No, we are not selling our garage. We are bringing things that we want to sell out of the house and putting them into the garage so we can sell them. These events can occur in garages, on porches or in the yard. They are called “Garage Sales,” and they have become a cottage industry in Sun City Center. Friday, Saturday, and even sometimes on Thursday, we ride around SCC in our golf cart, to look for sales. We see the same people and dogs every week. It does not matter if it cold, hot, raining or even a hurricane warning, the garage sale fans are out and looking of unique, one of a kind treasures. When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is go outside, then I come in to eat my breakfast, and then I usually want to go back outside for more sniffing around the yard. But not on Friday! On Friday, we go to the garage sales and I have to navigate the way. I love to go to the garage sales. I love seeing all of my garage sale dog friends. We have such a good time watching our people sift through all of the things that are for sale. Our people even talk about the treasures they found at other sales. My person gets so excited when she finds something that she has been looking for. She always has her list with her. Her friends know

that she goes out every week, so they let her know if they are looking for something and she usually finds it for them. She just loves the game! I remember one time that one of her friends called and asked her to look for a wine rack that would hold more than 50 bottles of wine. Wow, the very week that they asked her to find the wine rack, she found one and it cost a lot less then it would have cost online. Her friends were so happy! I have even heard that people come from far, far away to our SCC garage sales. They come from as far away as Apollo Beach, Riverview or Ruskin. Sometimes, someone will say something about Michigan, and half of the people in the driveway say they are from Michigan. Wow that really is a long way to go for a garage sale! Life is good here in SCC. Going to garage sales on Friday is something that my person and I love to do together.
