Sew’n Sews of SCC

By Paula Lickfeldt Any resident of SCC with an interest in sewing needs to know about the Sew’n Sews. This club with a membership of over 200 does everything that has to do with sewing. The group meets at the Arts and Crafts Building on Cherry Hill Drive and is open any time that a monitor is present. Different groups and different classes are offered all during the week. Check the schedule by visiting the shop. Mary Lou Bogdan, past president of the club shared some of the busy schedule. Once a week, Jan Ring sends out an email telling the members what they will make at their weekly meeting on Wednesday morning and what to bring. Monday morning is a quilting day. The quilters bring their project and help each other with cutting and pinning. Nancy Carroll teaches sewing classes all year depending upon her schedule. Thursday and Friday mornings are blocked out for classes such as sewing personal items. Tuesday afternoon is time for personal sewing, and Wednesday afternoon is set aside for hand quilting. Once a month the members have a “sewing and eating” evening. A theme is set for the potluck such as we will be eating Italian or Mexican and everyone

brings a dish to share. After the meal, the gals make things for donation, such as pillowcases for cancer patients, dresses for little girls in Africa or India and baby items for Choices, which is a place for pregnant women to go and take classes and get help learning how to take care of a new baby. Sew’n Sews make Chemo Caps for any woman with Cancer and “Fidget Aprons” for people with Alzheimer’s. The club has eight sewing machines, two embroidery machines and four surgers. Any member of the club can use any of the machines after taking the lessons on the use of the machine. The club donates items to A Kids Place in Brandon both in the summer and in the winter. Linda Starkey is in charge of making quilts for the Shriners. The group also makes pillow cases to be filled

with Christmas gifts, books, candy and toys for the annual Shriners Christmas party for children in Wimauma and Ruskin. Anyone who has fabric to donate can take it to the Sew’n Sews shop. Any sewing supplies will be accepted for donation. Anything that is not used by the club members is taken to the Nearly New Shop. The ladies love to go on “shop hops” which include quilt shows and fabric stores and of course they go to lunch. Any time that the shop is open, folks from the community can come in to buy things. For sale are doll clothes for 18 inch dolls, quilts, aprons, purses and many other items. For the donation of $10 per year any resident of SCC can belong to the Sew’n Sews. The members join to be able to sew for themselves and their family and all of the sewing for charity that the club does.

By Diane M. Loeffler The cool place to be on Saturday afternoon, September 8 was the outdoor pool on the North Campus of Sun City Center. From 1 until 4 p.m., Dave “Motown” Morris sang while CA members visited, ate, and danced under sunny skies. Most dancers kept cool by swaying and dancing right in the pool, but a few individuals danced on the

pavers around the pool. The Macarena, My Girl and Heard It Through the Grapevine were especially popular with the pool dancers. However, what really caught everyone’s attention was Morris’s rendition of the Frank Sinatra song, My Way. At the close of the song, people in the pool and in the surrounding area all stopped to applaud. Ambreen’s Cafe’ Luna was open for

anyone who wished to purchase food, ice cream or refreshments. Corn hole games were set up near the gazebo. At the shallow end of the pool, water volleyball enthusiasts played several games with a bright yellow ball. The atmosphere was festive, and everyone was smiling. The weather cooperated beautifully. The afternoon’s summer shower waited until after 4 to arrive.

Dancing around the pool.

Volleyball “court” was set up at the shallow end of the pool. If you would like to play water volleyball, come to the pool from 5 to 7 on Tuesdays and Fridays.

By Cathy Meyerhoff and Susan Muise Sun City Center History Society

Were You Here When…

“Things change.” “Change is inevitable.” We’ve all heard these expressions. Many of us wish that we could stop time in its tracks or go back to the “good old days.” Though neither is a possibility we can look back and enjoy glimpses of the past. You can have that experience if you make a visit to the new Sun City Center History Society display in the Atrium Building. Society members Susan Muise and Lynette Heisler collaborated to design a new display entitled “Were You Here When…” Featured are photographs from 1989 through 2013. Check out the changes in the appearance of the Atrium Building, the swimming pools and the fitness center. Remember when Walgreens Drug Store was located in the plaza behind Burger King? Do you recall where Nearly New was located before it relocated to the rear of the Sun City Center Plaza? Can you visualize what was located at the corner of Pebble Beach and SR-674 for the 35 years prior to 2005? All of these changes and many others are captured in the photos in the new exhibit. Thanks go out to Rusty Seiden for her help with research and to Floyd and Brian of the CA maintenance staff for their help in installing the display. Are you a Friend? A new club has been formed in SCC to help the History Society in its efforts to save our memories and continue our research. It is the Friends of the History Society. The dues are only $5 a year, and just being a member will help us in so many ways. The current display contains just some of the photographs the History Society has in its vault. Right now, a few volunteers are crowded into a very small

space spending many hours finding these old photos, researching our history and scanning huge amounts of paperwork to save for the future. We hope to someday enable our residents to look online to learn the history of Sun City Center or to come into a nice building and view the actual memorabilia. We would love to have a larger space so that others interested in research can have a place to work and so that history yet to happen will have a place to be stored. Our Friends group can help us to get grants, do some fundraising, and help us find others interested in the history of Sun City Center. We hope you help by just becoming a Friend. For more information call the History Society office at 813-633-3038.

The Red-spotted Purple is a stunner! This was the 47th butterfly species documented on the Sun City Center Nature Trails since our survey started in 2016, and what a delight it was to watch it wafting gracefully through the oaks on the outer loop. But how does a slow-moving eye catcher like that avoid being gobbled up by a voracious bird? One might think that wearing such brilliant coloration is hanging a target on your back that says, “Come and get me,” but the opposite is the case. The iridescent blue is an aposematic warning that says, “I taste bad and will make you sick if you eat me!” The Scarlet-bodied Wasp Moth was last month’s featured critter, and its brilliant red warning is legit—it truly is toxic. The Red-spotted Purple though is a fraud known as a Batesian mimic. Although benign, in the southeastern U.S. it has evolved the same coloration as the Pipevine Swallowtail which is laced with nasty aristolochic acid, enough to knock some predators for a loop. In the last century, Henry Walter Bates studied this eponymous copy-cat survival strategy which is widespread throughout the animal kingdom because it works! It’s like a fifth-grader wearing a karate uniform to school to avoid being bullied into coughing up his lunch money. That strategy is effective until it’s put to the test. For a kid, it’s best to master some kicks and chops, and for a bug it’s best to truly taste disgusting. How does a Red-spotted Purple taste? Who knows, but it sure is beautiful. Hillsborough County is the southernmost edge of its range up the eastern U.S., so we are blessed to have the very few that call the Nature Trails home. The Nature Trails trailhead is located opposite North Lake on Del Webb West between Vincennes and Seton Hall. John Lampkin, who never coughed up his lunch money, leads interpretive walks on the first Tuesday of each month at 9 am, or by appointment.

Free Ceramics Classes

President’s Report By John Luper, CA President A few months ago, when moving into our new offices, I noticed a binder for an organization formed over 29 years ago. The attendees at the first meeting included representatives from the CA, KP, Chamber, South Bay Hospital, and the developer of new homes. At their first meeting in July 1989 the top item they discussed was challenges of volunteerism. 29 years later it is still a challenge, but somehow or some way our community has grown and prospered. Now new approaches need to be found to encourage new residents to join so many who already are involved. Sun City Center Connects is the name of our new movement. Who can belong? All of us. What are our goals. Excite and renew the enthusiasm of volunteering in our community. We have professional guidance but the success or failure belongs to you and me. I am confident many of you will accept the challenge and enjoy the process. You will be hearing more telling how you can get involved. Volunteering can be as simple as coming to an event or a community meeting to make it a success. Your first opportunity is to come to the SCC membership meeting October 24, 7 p.m. at Community Hall. Coffee and cookies available at 6:30. You will be given updates on many CA issues, including next year’s proposed budget, and given an opportunity for questions and answers. Thanks in advance for volunteering one hour.

REMINDER APPLICATIONS FOR DIRECTOR ARE AVAILABLE IN THE CA OFFICE There are three positions open for three-year terms January 2, 2019 – January 5, 2022 Completed applications must be returned to the CA office by 3 p.m., October 3, 2018

Free Lessons on Getting Comfortable in the Pool

If you’ve never learned to swim or are nervous in the water, here’s a chance to become more relaxed and confident in the pool. Sun City Center Masters Swim Club has rescheduled its “Drowning Prevention Basic Water Course,” now that the Community Association indoor lap pool has reopened. This series of two one-hour lessons for adults will be held on Thursday, October 4 and Saturday, October 6, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., at the indoor lap pool. There is no charge for the lessons, but registration is required. You will need swim goggles and a swim cap. Participants will learn to submerge and blow bubbles in shallow water, move into deeper water to float on their back, and move to the side of the pool to exit. Instruction will be provided by SCC Masters Swim Club members. To register, complete a form available at the indoor pool, or contact Susan Shuttleworth at “susanshutt@reef4.com” or 813-922-4965.

Sew’n Sews Sew Pillowcases for Shriners Club

The ladies of the Sew’n Sews Club of Sun City Center made a little more than 100 pillowcases for the Sun City Center Shriners Christmas Party for the poorest of children in kindergarten and first grade in Ruskin and Wimauma. This is being done in conjunction with the Kings Point Quilting Club. The pillowcases were all made with Christmas fabric that had been donated by the community to the club. Normally the children are given a plastic bag filled with toys. Sandy Nunn, president of the Kings Point Quilter’s Club, thought it would be a good idea to give the toys in a pillowcase that could then be used on the children’s’ beds. The Shriners hold a large party with lunch for the children at the community center in Sun City Center. The members of the Sew’n Sews enjoy sewing and love to put their talents to use sewing for charity. Membership in the Sew’n Sews is open to all dues paying members of Sun City Center Community Association. For information call 813-505-9503 or email www.scc.sew.n.sews@gmail.com.

With Fall, Life in SCC Gets Busier

By Diane M. Loeffler The weather may not seem quite like fall yet, but the Community Association (CA) schedule is back in full gear. The Leaders’ Club meetings have resumed for presidents of clubs, Homeowners’ Associations (HOAs) and Property Owners’ Associations (POAs). Also, the Community Organization of Association Presidents (CO AP) meetings take place on the fourth Mondays in September, February and March. These meetings are held specifically to give HOAs and POAs information tied to their policies and state laws. The budget will then be voted on in October. October 3 is the last day to turn in applications to run for board director positions. As the meeting was held, Florence was heading toward the Carolinas. CA President John Luper reminds residents that hurricane season is not over and that we should all have our hurricane plans and supplies in place. Luper also says work is beginning on SR-674. Although the work will primarily be taking place at night, we can expect daytime traffic to be affected as well. Policy 6.05 has been changed. This policy only affects residents who rent out their homes to short term renters (someone renting for less than four months) and the short-term renters themselves. Owners need to pay dues for the largest number of renters that will be in his / her property at any one time. Short-term renters will need to come to the CA Administration Building between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to receive their blue CA passes. These passes will now include photos.

When applying for their card, short-term renters need to bring a copy of their lease and a driver’s license or state issued photo ID. Plans are underway for the Holiday Walk and Breakfast on December 1. Plan to come for the breakfast and then walk through the club rooms for gifts for those on your Christmas list—and yourself too! Helpers for the breakfast are always greatly appreciated. Forty-one homes were sold during August. As of the end of the month, we had 11,342 residents and 11,535 members. After Board Meetings adjourn, members may address the board with good news, concerns, and questions. Members doing so are asked to say their name and address and to try to keep their time down to three minutes. CA Director Marilyn Cote-Miller follows up on these matters. Go to the CA website, www. suncitycenter.org, and type Issues Log in the search box. A page will pop up. Scroll down to Issues Log and click on it. You will then see dates of board meetings. Click on any month and you will see a chart that lists the speaker, issue, responsibility and resolution. Miller also plans to report on these issues during board meetings. This month, CA members questions included long term plans, smoking restrictions, clarification of Policy 6.05, credit cards and debit cards. Good news was shared as well. Larry Smith says, “Verona is one hundred percent under contract. Verona’s back gate is now closed. Until construction is completed, the front gate will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.”

Linda Duhn graduated from Kent State University in Ohio with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and taught art in elementary schools in Michigan for several years. After receiving accreditation in organizational development from the University of Michigan, she took a hiatus from art in order to pursue a career in organizational effectiveness. She initially worked as an independent consultant and then joined the Thomson Reuters Corporation where she led efforts in leadership development and process improvement. Upon retiring and moving to Orlando in 2010, Linda resumed her art activities and became involved at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park where she studied with nationally recognized artist Barbara Tiffany. Linda works in several mediums including oil, acrylics, pastels and mixed media. Her paintings focus on a variety of subject matter such as still life, landscapes, portraits and interiors. Her mixed media work results in three-dimensional constructions comprised entirely of “green” components (recycled objects and materials). She has won numerous awards in Michigan and Florida art shows, most recently Maitland, Deland, Apopka, Winter Park and Sun City Center. Linda is an active member of the Art Club in Sun City Center and is currently serving as co-chair of the Demonstrations and Workshops Committee which arranges for skilled artists to conduct educational events for club members.

Cat Lovers Club of SCC Membership Drive Meet & Greet

Are you a cat lover living in Sun City Center? Would you like to meet and socialize with other like-minded neighbors? Whether you are a newcomer or whether you have lived here for years, you can make new friends, share good times, and also help needy cat owners. And you don’t even have to own a cat--just be extremely partial to them. The Cat Lovers Club of Sun City Center is having a membership drive. Once you sign on, you will have the opportunity to participate in feline-oriented seminars and workshops at Cat Depot in Sarasota, attend functions at our local library and sometimes interact at meetings with a guest speaker. The Club also has fundraisers like fashion shows, garage sales, and craft fairs that provide companionship and fun, while earning money to support “The Tuna Chest.” The Tuna Chest cat food pantry (run by the club) annually distributes thousands of pounds of food (litter and veterinary care) to pet owners in our area who are living below the poverty line--allowing these people to keep their pets. Check out The SCC Cat Lovers Club. Their next Membership Drive Meeting is planned for Wednesday, October 10 from 3 - 4 p.m. in the Armstrong Room of the Sun City Center Main Campus. For more information, phone Rita M. Bundas, President, Cat Lovers Club at 813-442-3014 or email “info@CatLoversClub.org”.

SCC Audubon Club Meeting

The Sun City Center Audubon Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in the Florida Room at the Atrium. The scheduled speaker is Damon Moore, Environmental Scientist, with Manatee County Natural Resources. Damon will discuss the planning, design, and creation of Perico Preserve. Conceived as a bird sanctuary, the Preserve was created from the ground up with walking paths created around ponds and expanses of native plantings. It is a haven for long legged wading birds, ospreys, and migrating species. A field trip to the preserve is planned on October 18. The group gathers at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and snacks with a brief business meeting at 10 a.m. followed by the program. Join club members to learn about Real Florida.

Flying High – Most of the Time

Cruising With the Triple Creek Radio Control Aircraft Club

By Kai Rambow Tucked away in the farm country nearby is a 350-foot paved runway for airplanes. How could anything take off and land in 350 feet you may wonder. It’s perfect for radio controlled aircraft. Residents from all over South County can be found almost every day practicing their flying skills. Don Schang, who flew KC97 tankers with the U.S. Air Force, joined 18 months ago. “I’m still in the learning process. The eye hand coordination required was very surprising to me. I miss the coordination I had in my younger days. The kids come out and can solo in a week. I’m still waiting to solo.” It is much harder than it looks; club members make it look easy. The laws of aerodynamics can be witnessed. Propeller driven aircraft can take off in very short distances. Jet aircraft, just like in real life, use a tremendous

amount of runway before lifting off. Landings present the biggest challenge, even for experienced members. Many club members buy scale models of their favorite airplanes. They look incredibly

real. Watching many of them fly is just like being at an airshow. Some enjoy building their own aircraft. Reinhold Baal bought a kit to build a flying replica of The Spirit of St. Louis. Using balsa wood and other materials, it took

Baal eight months to build it. “It doesn’t fly very well. Lindbergh was a brave man,” Baal said. Baal’s neighbor around the corner in Kings Point, Herman Cholewinski, built a huge model (37% scale) Fokker Triplane, yes, “The Red Baron.” On and off, over a period of five years, it really was built from scratch. It took a year just to get the original plans and use those to create reduced scale plans that were accurate. On the maiden flight, “while landing it had a radio malfunction, so I couldn’t communicate with it anymore. It crashed and was wrecked.” It took another year to rebuild it. The facilities today are impressive. Eight of the original members contributed a thousand dollars each, so facilities could be built. Goodson Farms brought in their big equipment to help clear the

Women from Ruskin, Apollo Beach, Riverview and Sun City Center gather on the second Tuesday of the month to have a delicious lunch, and listen to an informative program presented by an inspired speaker. Along with an interesting and informative afternoon, women get a chance to make some new friends. The leadership team, consisting of Kay Newsom, chair, and Betty Dean, co-chair, plus other members of the planning team, has worked hard over the summer to put together programs that will peak the attendees’ diverse interests. The theme for the October 11 meeting is “Put Your Best Foot Forward.” The speaker will be Amy Peck of Madeira Beach, Florida. She will present

The Editor’s Corner A Cornucopia of Culture Right Here at Home

By E. Adam Porter Editor in Chief, News of Sun City Center and South County There’s an old joke in Florida, and I’ve bet you’ve all heard it, but please indulge me. Since we don’t have seasons, how do you know it’s fall in Florida? Well… because the colors of the license plates start changing. (har har). Ask a native, and they might complain about the increase in traffic or the disappearing scrubland, but, truth be told, most of us appreciate the people, like many in SCC, who have chosen to call Florida home. And we can’t blame you. Everyone deserves to retire the ol’ snow shovel after 50odd years working the business end. If you want to trade icy windshields and slate gray horizons for evergreen grass and bright blue skies, that makes sense to me. As a native, I appreciate that Florida has always been a place people bring their dreams. This state has a history every bit as wild as the fabled American West, and it took all kinds to create the tapestry of cultures and traditions we have today. The Sunshine State absolutely

embodies the ideal of a melting pot community. And the beauty, depth, and opportunity created by that cultural influence is not hard to find. About an hour’s drive from Sun City Center, you can immerse yourself in a cornucopia of cultural connection. To the north, we have bonnie Dunedin, home of the annual Scottish Highland Games. And then there’s Tarpon Springs, epicenter of Florida’s sponge industry and home to the most authentic Greek cuisine in the state. Roughly due east from Tarpon Springs, in Central Pasco, is the tiny town of San Antonio. There’s no Alamo in this one, but there is a gorgeous Catholic Abbey that was a touchstone for the German and Italian Catholics who founded the town and fought to carve out a place to call their own. Today, that Abbey is the centerpiece of the campus of Saint Leo University, and it remains at the cultural heart of the tiny town. Just outside the City of Tampa, bordering both Port Tampa and the downtown business district, is Ybor City, better known as Cigar City USA. Tampa has been a major trading port since the days when Cuban Buccaneers ferried Caribbean cattle, tobacco, and other goods to Florida. Cuban, Italian, and German immigrants found homes here as laborers in the ports and cigar factories. A day tour of Ybor brings the rich cultural past to life, and, if you have the right tour guide, you may find yourself standing on genuine Cuban soil without ever leaving the USA. To our south, in the heart of the artistic and cultural mecca that

is Sarasota, you will find thriving Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch communities, home to Yoder’s Restaurant & Amish Village, as well as Sommers Dutch Family Restaurant. Sarasota is also the place where generations of folks who ran away to join the circus finally found a permanent home. Visit the famous Ringing Museum and Circus Sarasota, which keeps the timeless magic alive with annual performances under the Big Top every February and March. Travel a bit farther, and you find portals to Florida’s frontier heritage. In the tiny town of Clewiston, on the edge of the Everglades, discover Ah-TahThi-Ki Seminole Museum. And, if you’re feeling particularly daring, the nearby Billie Swamp Safari offers airboat and swamp buggy tours of Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation.

In Central Florida, on ranches scattered from Eastern Hillsborough to the spine of the Lake Wales Ridge, and north to the Ocala National Forest, Florida cow punchers work vast ranches from the backs of hardy Cracker Ponies and retired barrel racers. Offer them some sweet tea or a cold beer, and they may take a moment to teach you about the wonders of swamp cabbage and what wild boar tastes like when it’s been roasting in the ground all day. Of course, here in South Hillsborough County, there’s no need to travel much farther than your front door to experience a beautiful cultural tapestry. Thanks to all the transplants and snowbirds who flock here from across the country and around the world, Sun City Center and

Mixed Media and Fiber Arts Show

SCC Artists Selected for John Crawford Art Gallery Mixed Media and Fiber Arts Show Works from SCC residents KC Chilton and Terrie McNamara has been selected for a special art display at the SouthShore Regional Library. The “Mixed Media and Fiber Arts” show is sponsored by the SouthShore library for the purpose of providing the community with an educational, cultural and aesthetic experience. After a general call for entries, five participants were chosen – and KC and Terrie both had five clay monoprints selected for the display. “Clay monoprints are created by applying colored clay slips on a clay slab. Stencils and textures help create multiple layers which are then transferred to fabric. People attending the opening reception were fascinated by the process,” says Terrie. “Terrie and I are both potters at the Potter’s Wheel Club in Sun City Center,” adds KC. “Printing on fiber fits the show and allows us to connect this new fiber art to our work with clay.” The Mixed Media and Fiber Arts show will be displayed until October 24. Stop by the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin, to view the show.

Marcia Crispino: True Renaissance Woman

By Paula Lickfeldt Marcia Crispino is from Waterbury, Connecticut. Marcia is the youngest of three with an older sister and brother. It is said that art is the creative expression of man’s emotions. Whatever the form art takes, whether music, painting, sculpture or written verse, Marcia grew up in a gifted family and attributes her talent to her parents who taught her that she could “Do Anything” if she put her mind to it and did it from a place of love. In 1973, when Marcia was only 15 years old, she was asked to audition for the chorus of America’s Youth in Concert’s, third annual European Concert Tour. Her audition was at Princeton University. Marcia and three other students from Connecticut were chosen. Four students from each of the states were chosen, two choral and two orchestral, to represent America on the tour. The group traveled all over Europe as ambassadors from the United States of America. After high school, Marcia went on to college and got a degree in Gerontology and Therapeutic Recreation. For 15 years, she was the Director of Social Services and Recreation at a nursing home. Her next endeavor was to start a small business selling cheesecakes. The Cheesecake Cafe developed into a 75-seat restaurant where she and her

painting to hang on the walls and sewn all of the Paraments to be placed on the altar during the Liturgical Year of the church. Sun City Center has many creative, talented men and women. Marcia Crispino is certainly one of them.

best friend Gina DiGiovanni, served fabulous food for fourteen years. Every day they would post a “positive thought” for the day in front of the shop. Their customers not only delighted in the food that they ate, but also in the food for their soul. The two friends decided to start a new company after the site of the Cheesecake Cafe was sold and torn down. They became consultants for a Drug and Alcohol Facility and this developed into a consulting and management company which they ran for 25 years serving the substance abuse community of New Haven County, Connecticut.

Throughout the years, Marcia was always drawn to the arts and dabbled in painting, music, woodworking and cooking but never had the time to spend on any one thing until she retired to Sun City Center in 2012 with her partner Bridget Sweeney. After settling in she has gotten involved in concrete formation, pottery, painting, sewing, tiling, and any other form of creating that she can think of. Sun City Center opened many doors for her but her best talents have been put to work at SouthShore United Church of Christ where she and Bridget found a home. She has painted rooms, done large and small

South County are flush with crosscultural immersion opportunities. This month, enjoy Oktoberfest. And, just about any month from October through May, you can pop in on the German Club, Italian Club, British Connection, Irish Connection, Multicultural Heritage Club, or any of the many different ethnic or statebased clubs or groups in town. Whether you live in Sun City Center, Kings Point, Valencia Lakes, Wimauma, Ruskin, Riverview, or Apollo Beach, there are opportunities, right in your neighborhood, to explore a new culture, a new food, or a new perspective… and, if you’re lucky, to make some new friends. And that’s one of the biggest reasons this Native Floridian loves my state’s melting pot history and modern settlement of folks from “up north.” There’s always something exciting to learn or do or see, and someone interesting to meet. You may not root for the “right” football or baseball teams, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bridge Association Members Celebrate 60 Years

The Duplicate Bridge Association of Sun City Center congratulates Pat & Jerry Rippel upon the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary! Once upon a September 20th (in 1958) a boy, Jerry, and a girl, Pat, were married. They were both bridge players when they met - at a bridge table, of course! Rather quickly they realized their nascent bridge game needed improvement; the challenge was accepted and six decades later their bridge story is one for the Vanderbilt/Gorham et.al., books! Through the years of child rearing and career building they played social and duplicate bridge. Pat claims Jerry was the better player; Jerry, ever the gentleman, demurs. When Pat retired after twenty-two years of teaching she signed up for bridge teaching classes and so she was 60 years together on September a teacher once again. Then, 20, 2018. Congratulations Mr. and enter the “tournament years”; Mrs. Rippel. Well played! mentored by excellent players Team Rippel won many silver points at Sectionals. During this time, they won the area Non Life Master Nationals and were awarded an all-expense paid trip to Dallas for a week! That same year found them in Bermuda for the Nationals, coming home with a win! Sixteen years ago, they made the decision to leave Pittsburgh for the golf and bridge in Sun City Center. Pat was first to get a holein-one and soon experienced a plethora of other “firsts” as she volunteered time and again for bridge club duties. Pat served on the Board of the DBASCC in addition to Tournament Chair, Social Chair, and Secretary. Jerry was the unsung hero of Pat’s many commitments, doing those thousand things that must be done but are noticed only when they remain UNdone! Year after year after year, Pat and Jerry answered the “help!” call from this bridge club; they each directed for twelve years and Pat taught bridge for a decade at Kings Point and Sun City.

Carol Feldhauser has joined the exclusive group of Grand Master Photographers in the Sun City Center Photo Club. In order to receive this accomplished reward, a photographer must receive ten perfect score awards in club competitions. At the August 14, club meeting, Carol was recognized with her name being engraved on this honorable plaque. Carol is currently retired, moving from Colorado to Sun City Center. She previously worked for a tech company for over twenty years. She is self-taught and received her first camera at an early age. She loves to learn new things and our club provides that opportunity to its members. Over the years, she has participated in many competitions, winning many awards. Congratulations, Carol! The weather didn’t cooperate, but it failed to keep the Security Patrol’s Ice Cream Social on Labor Day from being a big success. The Patrol estimated that 125-150 members showed up for the occasion being held to thank those who had done extra shifts this summer while the snowbirds are away. While Kimball serve Uta Kuhn, a.k.a. the ice cream bar was the big “Sister Mary Margarita.” attraction, the Patrol used the event to raffle off two beautiful fall motif wall hangings done by Board Member Adrienne Ledenbach. The raffle added $125 to the Patrol coffers. Jim Forsythe and Don Mostov were the lucky winners. The Patrol also started its advertising for the comedy event, Late Nite Catechism, which the Patrol will sponsor at the Community Hall on Jan. 19, 2019. Uta Kuhn and Janet Stifter dressed as a couple of nuns at the social, and they ‘guilted’ 20 or so members into signing up to help prepare for the production. Expect to see Uta and/or Janet in their habits at other events around the community as the date of the production gets closer.

News of Freedom Plaza

By Peggy Burgess One of the things residents enjoy most about Freedom Plaza is getting away from it; not on a permanent basis, of course, but for a few hours, a day, two days, ten days...or even more. Over the past two decades, groups of Freedom Plaza residents have been escorted to destinations all along America’s eastern seaboard: Charleston, Savannah, Myrtle Beach and New England. They have lodged in the Blue Ridge Mountains and traveled the entire length of the Mississippi River by paddle-boat. They have enjoyed Branson, Mo., Las Vegas and San Francisco; sailed away on a dozen Freedom Plaza Scholarship Caribbean cruises and enjoyed six European excursions, four of them river cruises. The other two European trips were a castle-hopping tour (staying at hotels adjoining castles) on the way to Munich’s Oktoberfest and an Opera Tour to Munich, Vienna, Prague and Salzburg, attending opera performances in each city. “And the beat goes on”! Never willing to rest on laurels, the Resident Programs Department and the Transportation Department consistently join forces to keep residents on the move, locally as well as to faraway places. Many of these jaunts are suggested by the residents, themselves, at open planning sessions. Excursion suggestions are taken seriously and, if feasible

and likely to appeal to a large segment of the residency, are acted upon. One such day trip enjoyed recently involved touring two of St. Petersburg’s 28 museums and galleries — with a delightful lunch at The Mill Restaurant sandwiched in between tours. Both of the museums visited (the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and the Imagine Museum of Studio Glass Art) are fairly new, opening just this year, and both are well worth a trip across the Bay. Some Freedom Plaza excursions have proved so popular as to become routine. These include trips to see the Rays play ball; productions at the Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota; the Metropolitan Opera “Live at the Met” matinees at area movie theaters and the Florida Orchestra Coffee Concerts at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Season tickets to these events, with transportation included, are made available to residents. Along with the usual trips to restaurants, shopping malls and entertainment venues, two extended excursions, both escorted by Freedom Plaza staff members, will brighten the months of October and December. In October, a group of residents will fly to Arizona, lodge in Sedona and spend five days touring the Grand Canyon and its environs via motor coach and scenic railroad. This trip was arranged by Brookdale, Freedom

Plaza’s parent company, and will include travelers from other nearby Brookdale communities. December’s three-day Get Away, this arranged by Freedom Plaza, is to St. Augustine to marvel at that ancient city’s “Nights of Lights”. Hotel reservations are at the Wyndham Sebastian and amenities include tickets to three

museums, a narrated carriage tour of the city plus a boat ride to view the spectacular light display. While trips and tours are arranged for our residents as a part of their Freedom Plaza lifestyle, some do permit guests of residents on a space-available basis. Hope to see you aboard!

Family Connections: To Sun City Center

By Paula Lickfeldt In 1981 Marie and Jack Shook came to Sun City Center from Adrian, Michigan. They bought a home on Oakmont Ave. and enjoyed the lifestyle that SCC had to offer. Among the various activities that they participated in were square dancing and the Investment Club. During the first few years that Jack and Marie lived in SCC, their only child Dale, worked for the Arabian American Oil Co. in Saudi Arabia. He and his wife Karen lived in Dhahran for a number of years and later they moved to Europe where Dale taught in the Boston University European MBA program. When Karen and Dale returned to the U.S. he was a professor of Business and Economics at Skidmore College and the State University of New York at Albany. During the time that they were in New York, Karen owned and ran a bed and breakfast, conference center and tea room in Saratoga Springs. In 2007, due to illness, Karen’s expansion plans

Karen and Dale Shook

were put on the shelf, and they moved further south to be closer to several of their children. After Dale’s parents passed away the home in Florida was willed to him. Karen, Dale and their children visited SCC often to take care of the house. In 2017, Dale and Karen decided to move to Florida and make the house on Oakmont their home. Since they had not lived in SCC until last year, they are still looking at all of the activities that are available to them here in SCC. We would love to hear how and why your family came to SCC. To share your story, call Paula at 633-67439.

Learn More about SCC’s History

By Diane M. Loeffler What do you know about Sun City Center (SCC) and the surrounding areas? Did you know that at one time Wimauma was one of only four incorporated cities in Hillsborough County? Stripping pine trees for turpentine was a huge business in this town named for a man’s three daughters. Had you heard that Del Webb wanted to name our community “Sun City” but that there already was a Sun City in our county? Along with Gulf City, Sun City ships a million plants a week. Did you know that the Miller home in Ruskin is the last remaining structure from the Common Good College? Had you heard that “Hi, Neighbor!” was SCC’s first official event? These were just a few of the discussion items during the last Friends of the History Society meeting. On October 30 at 2:00 p.m. the Friends of the History Society (Friends) will be meeting in the Caper Room. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Sun City Center and its history

Classic, Historic Key West

By Kai Rambow “He was the most interesting man on the planet, long before the Dos Equis commercial,” our tour guide at the Hemingway House noted. Key West has attracted all kinds of enterprising and famous characters, creating a storied history. Here are great options to explore some of that history: Conch Tour Train vs. Trolley Tours If you’re making your first trip to Key West, taking one of these tours is a great way to learn about the city. The Conch Tour Train is a narrated trip with only a few stops. Trolley Tours is also a narrated trip, but has numerous hop-on and hop-off stops. Both are good, so it’s a matter of personal preference. Note: Trolley Tours states it takes you around the entire island. While technically true, the additional length has water on one side and hotels / commercial properties on the other side. Ernest Hemingway House This historic house existed before Hemingway moved in; it’s the stories about this colorful, transformative writer that make this a must-see place. While you can explore on your own, recommend you take a guided tour, to get the vivid details of Hemingway’s life. Even little details are told with flair. A six-toed cat gifted to Hemingway has multiple descendants living in luxury here. All have been given famous names. One kitten was named Howard Hughes. Shortly after being named, this cat became a recluse. “You can’t make this stuff up,” our guide enthused. Harry S. Truman Little White House Under doctor’s orders to get some rest, Admiral Nimitz suggested this spot at the naval base. President Truman loved it

so much, he made multiple visits during the rest of his presidency totaling 175 days. Changes were made to the original building, turning it into the little White House. Personal insights from guides make this a worthwhile visit. While Truman loved being here and frequently walked through Key West, his wife did not. Truman loved to play poker; his spouse disapproved. Duval Street This main street has a wonderful mix of historic buildings, art galleries, restaurants and bars. Day and night walks reveal different aspects of Key West.

Pepe’s Café Over 100 years old, this is the oldest restaurant in the Florida Keys. It has a solid reputation with locals and repeat visitors. President Truman would stop in for coffee during his walks. Noted for daily specials for breakfast, it’s open all day. Located across from the historic seaport (806 Caroline St.) with plenty of parking nearby, this is a tasty, historic place. Tips for a Great Trip Hurricane Irma: This trip was made two weeks ago. The Keys are fully recovered with very few indications of last year’s hurricane. Drive or Ferry: It’s a sevenhour drive without stops to Key West. The ferry running from Ft. Myers may seem like an option, however, several people shared problems they’ve encountered. Check in time for the ferry is 7 a.m. It’s a 2.5-hour drive to the ferry, so you would need to leave really early or book a hotel room. You can expect to arrive in Key West around 12:30 p.m. Ticket cost for one person is more than gas for a return trip by car. A bigger problem is the weather. If the weather is not good, the ferry will cancel a boat

Pepe’s dilapidated look belies an over 100 year history; it is the oldest restaurant in the Florida Keys. It is very popular with locals and repeat tourists.

Sloppy Joe’s is a historic American bar located on Duval Street. Opened in 1933, Ernest Hemingway was a regular customer.

From 1931 to 1939, Hemingway prolifically wrote most of his work at this house. The house, built in 1851, has withstood numerous hurricanes.

Key West, Florida’s third oldest city, is closer to Havana than Miami. It’s laid back atmosphere, warm temperatures and beautiful sunsets have enticed many to live here, and many more to be repeat visitors.

Is Your Weight-Loss Ship Sinking or Sailing?

The above title question is how Lillian Hormosdi (pictured) named the presentation she gave to the members of TOPS, “Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter FL 0845” recently. Lillian found the information in the “Chapter & Member Resources” of the TOPS website. Ms. Hormosdi discussed six issues that will deter efforts to lose weight. For example, as one of the six, “Who in my life needs to walk the proverbial plank so I can be healthier?” It was suggested that, “Whether it’s a sabotaging spouse, jealous friend, unkind co-worker or just the pizza delivery guy, those trying to lose weight should tell them ‘to take a long walk on a short plank.’” If one has weight to lose, or just wants to learn how to maintain a healthy weight, consider attending a Thursday morning meeting of TOPS, held at 9 a.m. (with 8:30 am weigh-in) in the Kings Point South Clubhouse. Most meetings include a program with ideas for the safe loss of unwanted weight. Please join us any Thursday morning. First meeting is free. Contact Barb Floto at 813-938-1046 for meeting details. You can learn more about TOPS online at www.tops.org.

Kings Point Mixed Chorus Prepares for Holiday Concert

By Stephanie Casey The season’s inaugural rehearsal of the Kings Point Mixed Chorus on Monday, September 13, was met with excitement and enthusiasm by the 60-plus members who began preparation for the November 30 Holiday Concert. This year’s theme is “Do You Hear What I Hear?” Under the direction of Jeff Jordan, with accompanist Keith Rasmussen, the sopranos, altos, tenors and bass singers got a taste of the wonderful variety of festive music which will be presented in the Kings Point Veterans Theater. The selections include traditional Christmas and holiday songs, as well as some humorous and more modern choices, a delightful potpourri of sounds sure to please our local audience. The Chorus, which meets every Monday afternoon in the Kings Point North Clubhouse from 12:15 to approximately 2:30 p.m., will remain open for membership until October 8, unless the maximum of 80 voices is reached before then. Anyone in the greater Sun City Center area who is interested in participating in choral music is welcome to join. Auditions are not required. Our singers come from various locales, including Apollo Beach, Brandon and Wimauma. Membership dues are $20 per season, which help cover music and concert expenses. Mark your calendars now for Friday, November 30, so you can enjoy a delightful start to the holiday season by listening to an enjoyable afternoon of musical entertainment. Tickets will be on sale at the Kings Point Box Office in the near future for $8. Both round table cabaret style and bleacher seating will be available, BYOB. If you have a desire to be a part of this friendly and hardworking chorus, we’ll see you on a Monday afternoon, until October 8, at the Kings Point North Clubhouse. You might want to bring some water and a sweater. If you just want to sit back and enjoy being entertained at a good Holiday concert, we’ll see you on Friday, November 30, at 4 p.m. For more information, you may contact Mary Anne at 813-634-8747 or email “triplelady@aol.com”. You may also log on to the Kings Point Mixed Chorus website at www.kpchorus.org.

Your story continues here... FL 33573 1010 American Eagle Blvd.Sun City Center, www.brookdaleliving.com Q. What is an Active Living Community? What is a CCRC? A. Freedom Plaza offers a community that places priority on remaining active and staying engaged with maintenance-free residences and a full continuum of care available. Freedom Plaza offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and other health services. Q. What’s the difference between a rental community and a Life Care* community? A. Rental communities do not require the upfront fees of a Life Care* community. Renting gives you the ability to pay for services if, and only if, the services are needed. You can also terminate the lease without significant financial loss. On the other hand, the upfront fee of a Life Care* community can be thought of as a down payment for your future, as it can guarantee your accommodations, even if your financial resources are eventually exhausted due to no fault of your own. Q. What is the true benefit to moving to a senior living community? A. This can be different for each individual. Freedom Plaza offers a wide variety of lifestyle activities, lifelong learning and the ability to fill your social calendar. Residents often tell us that the biggest factor in their decision was the peace of mind that comes with having a complete plan for the future.

Q. Will I qualify to live at Freedom Plaza? A. In order to enjoy the lifestyle and Peace of Mind that Freedom Plaza offers you must be at least 62 years of age or older. A future resident must also meet physical and mental requirements, including a physician’s opinion and medical records indicating you are able to live independently. A financial qualification will also be required. Q. Does Freedom Plaza require prior military service? A. Everyone is welcome at Freedom Plaza. In Fact, out of 529 Independent Living Residents, 210 have served in the military. Q. Why should a person move to Freedom Plaza rather that waiting to hire help at home? A. When one stays at home, there are still a lot of obstacles and “housekeeping” items, such as cooking, laundry and yard work that need to be done. The cost of paying for assistance in all these areas can be many times greater than the cost of Freedom Plaza. Q. What is the financial status of Freedom Plaza? A. Freedom Plaza is owned by Joint Venture, consisting of a 51% ownership from Brookdale and 49% from HCP, Inc. Freedom Plaza has a 2018 YTD Net Operating Income of $2,808,748 and is in good standing with the FL Office of Insurance Regulations.

Athlete of the Month: Bernice DuBro

By Bob Monahan, Sports Reporter You might have seen her picture in the local newspapers, the svelte lady in the red dress who is offering instruction in all forms of ballroom dancing. That lady is Bernice DuBro, who I met when she offered a free dance lesson for the public. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed her instruction and admired the graceful demonstration of all forms of dance. If you are a fan of, “Dancing with the Stars” you can see why I am featuring a dancer as an athlete. Experienced dancers have great flexibility, strength and cardio-vascular endurance and Bernice fits that mold. Born and raised in Fort Loramie, Ohio, Bernice took an early liking to all forms of dance. She attended junior college and gradually mastered all the major forms of dance. After moving to Dayton, Ohio, she was asked to be an instructor at the age of 19. Later, she started her own dance studio, which she successfully ran for over 40 years. An early marriage brought forth a son, Jeffrey who now lives in Virginia and is an architect/builder. Her second husband, a Florida native, brought her to Sun City Center in 2006 and, unfortunately, he passed away in 2009. During this time period Bernice was asked to take over the dance program here in SCC, which she successfully did. About four years ago, Bernice partnered with George Hawn, who had his own dance studio in Ohio before moving to Sun City Center with his wife, Michelle. There are many things that Bernice enjoys in Sun City Center particularly the friendly people, the myriad of activities, and the close proximity of culture in the Tampa and Sarasota areas. To stay fit Bernice has a home-based exercise program for yoga and stretching along with using a rebounder trampoline. Bernice’s diet has a lot of fruits, vegetables and fish and avoids sugars and most meats. I also often see her on the pickleball courts where she is a competent player. She enjoys the companionship of her friend Roger, who is learning to dance and play pickleball with Bernice. Bob Martin, one of Bernice’s Academy Dance students, was glad to comment about her teaching techniques. “My wife Chris and I have been taking dance lessons with Bernice since we moved here six years ago. Bernice makes the dance instructions fun. She teaches the right way, which is the easiest way. We’ve taken waltz, cha-cha, foxtrot, quick-step, bolero and rumba among other classes she teaches.” Bernice is an amazingly fit and active senior and an asset to Sun City Center. You might want to consider joining her at the Academy of Ballroom Dancing, as I know my wife and I will be doing.

Indoor Basketball for all Ages Saturdays at Ruskin Recreation Center

By Bob Monahan, Sports Reporter If you or your family has any interest in basketball what better place is there than the friendly confines of the Ruskin recreation Center on South East 6th street? The facility is air conditioned with a multiple of courts and adjustable hoops. Saturday is the day when family basketball starts at 9 to 10:15, followed by teen basketball at 10:30 to 12:15. After lunch, 30 and up basketball starts at 12:15 to 1:40. These programs are free to all county residents. The over 30 basketball is a new program and will be a full-court timed and supervised activity in pickup game style. This will be an ideal activity for those still working or aging up who don’t have to compete with the young adults. For more information call Joy Robinson, facility director at 813-672-7881.

By Paula Lickfeldt Jim Rottman, president of the SCC Ohio Club, Linda Dulick, president of the KP Ohio Club, and Lori Brezec member of the KP club, are also on the Emergency Squad together. While on duty they talked about their two Ohio Clubs. The two clubs had never had an event together and they had never had a summer activity. The three decided to try having an indoor summer picnic and call it “Hands over SR-674.” On August 11, the two clubs came together in the Florida Room for the first ever summer picnic. The picnic style food consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and

coconut corn was catered by Cafe De Luna, which is in the Atrium Building. Members and guests were asked to bring a dessert to share. After dinner, Eric Lee provided music for listening and dancing. Not everyone goes north for the summer. Over 155 Ohioans had a fun-filled evening at the first ever indoor summer picnic.

Resident of Distinction: Ed Barnes

By Ilona Merritt Volunteerism and Sun City Center are synonymous, so what better place for a dynamic person like Ed Barnes to choose to retire and what a benefit to Sun City Center and its residents. Ed had retired as a Commander in the United States Navy and he and his wife, Nancy, had settled in Oklahoma City. One of their three sons lived in Sarasota and while visiting him they became acquainted with Sun City Center. In 2003 they decided to move here to be closer to their family, but when his son left Sarasota, Ed and Nancy decided to stay here. In April 2007 Ed was appointed Director to the Community Association to fill a vacant position. The appointment expired in January 2008, but Ed continued to serve the SCC community until 2014. During that time, he served as Vice President and President of the Community Association. Ed led the effort to retain South Bay Hospital as the Community Hospital for Sun City Center. He engaged in an extensive letter-writing campaign to the Governor and the Florida Health Agency to keep Hospital Corporation of America from moving South Bay Hospital to Big Bend Road. His effort was declared successful when an Administrative Judge ruled that SCC would incur extensive damage if the Community

Hospital was moved and the petition was denied. Ed negotiated the gifting of five acres on the North Lakes Golf Course from ClubLink, USA to the SCC Community Association. Negotiations were conducted over a six-month period of time and resulted in ClubLink making a charitable donation of five acres of land. This expanded the Atrium Parking lot by 150 much needed parking spaces. Ed engaged in a program to construct a new Information Center, Library expansion, and Meeting Building housing the Mac Club and Yoga Club. These two programs were the foundation for future building programs to update and modernized the CA campus in future years. He negotiated with Minto and Hillsborough County to assume the maintenance responsibility for the Pebble Beach Blvd medians. This transition occurred over a threeyear period and was required to

ensure that the property values in SCC would not be significantly impacted. Ed did not stop working for our community after his time on the Board. He negotiated with homeowners, donors, and SCC Beautification Corp to install a plastic white fence on the North side of SR-674. The old fence was a significant eyesore to the community. He led an effort to establish a nature trail off of West Del Webb which provides a very comfortable walking and hiking area for the residents of SCC. Ed served as Chairman of the SCCA Budget Committee for the past five years. During this time, the committee has developed budgets which allow the Board of Directors and the Community Manager to operate the community to the level expected by residents. He served as Vice President of the Sun City Center “Charitable Foundation, Inc. This taxexempt, charitable organization founded and run by SCC area individuals whose mission it is to improve the quality of life for the resident of the Greater Sun City Center. Currently, he is serving as President of the Renaissance Maintenance Association. Ed Barnes, along with his cochair Paul Wheat, led the effort to provide the Governor’s Veterans Service Award to veterans in the Sun City Center area. They managed the publicity for this

27

event and worked with the local area veterans organizations to contact as many veterans as possible. They interfaced with the Governor’s staff to coordinate logistics and security for the event. Governor Scott presented these Service Awards to more than 1,000 veterans at the Community Hall. In reading this, one can’t help but think that Ed works for the Sun City Center Community above and beyond the call of duty. He does enjoy his golf games in the morning, and you can find him at many social functions. Especially the FunFest where one year he took the seat in the water tank and his grandson hit the bullseye and dumped Grampa Ed into the water. Sun City Center is truly fortunate to have someone like Ed in our community. Per Ed Barnes, “All of these projects were accomplished with the use of many volunteers and others who served on committees and forums to support these efforts. SCC runs on volunteers!”
