Pool Maintenance Update

By Diane Loeffler Over the summer the walls around the lap pool were cleaned and painted. This maintenance project is addressed about every eight years. A fresh coat of sea foam blue paint is ready to greet everyone who loves to visit and exercise in the walking pool. The murals were rehung during August. Three of the walls surrounding the outdoor pool have also been painted this same shade of blue. The brick wall will remain sand-colored.

Join in the Preservation of SCC’s History

By Diane M. Loeffler Perhaps you have reached the point in life where you are wondering about your family’s history. You are no longer hustling around trying to balance family, work, and all the commitments that began in your twenties and finally eased up when you retired. Why did your grandma hate to put anything in writing? Did it have to do with her childhood years in “the old country” or maybe even something in her parents’ pasts? All too often, by the time we have the leisure to reflect on our own lives and that of the people who came before us, the relatives who could have told us the stories are gone or unable to share the stories. In some ways, I am lucky to have drawers of old, crumbling newspaper clippings, fading photos, letters, and artwork from my parents. I know I should organize it in some fashion so that I can convey to my children and grandchildren, this is who we are; this is how we came to be; these are the values we hold dear. Our community is very much like a family. It has a heritage. Flesh and blood people created it based on their beliefs of what a person’s “Golden Years” should look like. People like Del Webb looked at what the post-work lives of people had

been and dreamed about what these years could be. In the years since then, our Sun City Center’s structure and practices were modified and tweaked. But why? Do you ever wonder why Sun City Center doesn’t have a paid mayor and city council? Are there any policies and procedures that are a mystery to you? Do you ever wonder about the buildings, the physical layout, the amenities or the ambiance of the community? Here in Sun City C enter, our Community Association has a group called the History Society. Every quarter this group of five or six individuals meets and makes plans. In the months between meetings they gather materials, categorize them, digitize them, organize them, and display them. These dedicated individuals devote a great deal of time and effort to preserving who we were and what we are becoming. Perhaps you don’t have a lot of time or energy to devote to working on a project, but you would be glad to do a little something. Does this sound like you? Then the Friends Club of the History Society (Friends) is for you. There are all sorts of short term projects you could choose to help with. City Center, say a list of local stores or dentists or services? Interested in coming up with ideas on topics about our past that you think people might be interested in learning more about? You could help with suggesting program topics for the Friends meetings. Ever write a grant? The History Society would love to have the assistance of a few people. Interested in writing something about an aspect of our community such as the establishment and evolution of your HOA or a group like the emergency squad? Do you enjoy drawing illustrations? As a member of Friends, you can be a “boots on the ground” person for as short or as long a period of time as you wish. There are dozens of possible ways that you can help. The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30 in the Caper Room. Enjoy the presentation and the refreshments. If you like what you hear, let someone there know what your talents or interests are and how much time you are able to devote to a project. You can also contact the Friends office at 813 633-3038 and leave a message. Another option would be to send a message to “scchistorysoc@gmail.com”. Don’t let our past slip away.
