Held by the Cancer Council, Organisations and individuals across the Nation organise their own morning tea to raise money and awareness to the insidious disease that is cancer. Council Dorin’s Draws Hold Off Sale Decision

A STRONG majority of Port Stephens Councillors last week voted to defer a decision on the sale of a cleared parcel of land at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay. The decision to defer was made to give Councillors time to visit the block of land and seek further community feedback. Mayor Ryan Palmer says it is a positive outcome. “This Council is committed to making a meaningful and positive difference to Port Stephens, while protecting our valuable environment.” Mayor Palmer said, “This decision will enable Councillors to visit the site and see for themselves that access to the foreshore for both the community and our local koala population will still be maintained if they decide to proceed.” “The proceeds from the sale would also provide muchneeded funding for the Tomaree Sports Complex, so that Council can get to work on upgrading this valuable community asset for our future generations,” he said. Mayor Palmer said there had been some confusion about which parcel of land was being sold. “This cleared parcel of land was created along with 55 other lots on Foreshore Drive back in 1956. While it has been sitting idle for some time, it is residentially zoned land on which only one tree stands,” he said. “The site is next door to an important public reserve, full of trees, which will still be maintained for the community and koalas to access the foreshore,” he added. The decision on 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay will be made at a later date to be advised.

In tough times, it is often hard to know how to provide support or show that we care. Kim Oakhill has created a business to provide this specialised and unique service, and has been reawarded for her efforts.

Dear Mrs BY,

Some people are hoarders and others are declutterers but you have created a whole new hybrid: a declutterer who wants to hoard, but at your expense. I personally hate clutter. I am not big on knick-knacks or ornaments or stray children. They just gather dust. Clean lines make us feel more in control and able to deal with things. If your home is full of junk, your mind will be full of junk as well. I know not everyone feels this way, however, and they like to hold onto things like ornaments (and children) for sentimental value. Sure, keep the kids, but do you really need that pottery hippopotamus with the chipped leg, just because Aunt Delilah gave it to you when you were five? How about the three planks of timber rotting in the backyard that are waiting to be constructed into an alfresco area complete with pergola, ornamental grapevine and fire pit? No, you are not really going to turn those broken cups into homemade candles or invite guests over for a high tea. Are you? Next time your mother-in-law comes up with a handful of gifts, just hold your hand up in a ‘stop immediately’ signal. Tell her, up front, that if the objects are too good to throw out, she should keep them herself or take them to the recycling centre where they will be put to good use. Your politeness is not only creating a cluttered house, but is taking up valuable headspace conjuring feelings of passive aggression. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Along with their creative cow, students will develop multimedia presentations, and explore issues such as biodiversity, climate change, water use, and renewable energy. Assisting them on their journey will be Casey Onus, a Young Farming Champion. Now in its eighth year, The Archibull Prize continues to influence how Australian agriculture is perceived. “As consumers, understanding where our food, clothing and power come from will inform decisionmaking and encourage leadership, that benefits the community and the producers when providing sustainable agriculture and resource management for our future needs,” said a teacher from the 2017 competition. “The Archibull Prize allows students to demonstrate decision making and leadership skills by planning, organising and making a

An Industry Advocate will also visit the students to speak about their career in the dairy industry. Each school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7-11, at no cost. Over the threeweeks, students are required to form teams to complete industrybased assessments. MEMBERS of the Galleries in the Gardens are busy creating new works for the group’s annual Winter Warmer Art Exhibition. People’s Choice award. “Throughout the June long weekend visitors to The Gallery can cast their vote for their favourite artwork,” Trevor said.

The Winter Warmer exhibition will be on display from Saturday 10 June for a limited time, and entry is free. It’s been a big year for the Galleries in the Garden, finally having a place to call home and thousands of visitors enjoying the experience as well.

Playground Remove for Safety Reasons

THE playground at Anna Bay’s Robinson Reserve will be removed in the next fortnight due to safety concerns, ahead of the construction of a new recreation precinct next year. Community and Recreation Coordinator Brock Lamont says Council has been forced to remove the playground due to severe corrosion from the coastal conditions. “During Council’s routine playground inspections, staff have found the metal elements of the playground have become corroded and unsafe,” Mr Lamont said. “The last thing we want is for someone to get hurt on the old equipment, so Council has barricaded the playground and will remove it within the next fortnight. The swing set has been deemed safe and will remain in place until the site is redeveloped.” Mr Lamont says funding for Robinson Reserve was recently announced by the NSW Government as part of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. “Council was recently successful in securing $700,000 to construct a recreational precinct at Robinson Reserve, including a new playground, skate park, Aboriginal Place interpretative signage and supporting park infrastructure. “Council has also allocated $320,000 to the project, bringing the total investment to over $1 million for the Anna Bay community.” Construction of the Robinson Reserve recreation area, which forms part of the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Masterplan, is due to begin in March 2019 pending approvals. “Council staff are currently working through the concept design and approvals stage of the project, and will be carrying out consultation with the Aboriginal Place steering committee and the broader Anna Bay community over the coming months. “It’s an exciting time for Anna Bay, as Council is eager to deliver a quality beachfront recreational space that highlights the natural and cultural importance of the area. “In the meantime, we’re exploring ways to activate the site in spring and summer to ensure that Anna Bay residents and visitors have recreation opportunities until the new precinct is constructed. “We understand that it’s a frustrating time for many people, but we’re asking for the community to have patience because the end result will definitely be worth the wait.”

RESIDENTS living in the Williamtown Management Area will benefit from rate relief after Councillors voted in favour of reducing rates for those properties affected by PFAS (perand poly-fluoroalkyl substances). A 50 per cent reduction is proposed for residents living in the Primary Zone, a 25 per cent reduction is

proposed for residents in the Secondary Zone and a 10 per cent reduction is proposed for those living in the Broader Zone. Mayor Ryan Palmer says whilst the policy will need to be placed on exhibition, the move is expected to save residents living in the Management Area hundreds of dollars. “We’re looking

at any way we can help the people living in the Williamtown Management Area, and a rate reduction is certainly something that will come as a relief for residents affected by PFAS,” Mayor Palmer said. “People living in the Primary Zone could save up to $680, which represents a 50 per cent reduction in rates. It’s not going to solve everything,

but it is something that we can do to help at a local level. “The reductions will be spread evenly across the remaining Port Stephens ratepayers at an average increase of $2.71 for the year, which I think most would agree is a modest price to pay to help those who are suffering in our community. “This is just one of

many options that Council will be looking at over the coming months and years to support people in the Williamtown Management Area,” he added. The proposal will be included in Council’s Statement of Revenue Policy for 2018-2019 and will be placed on public exhibition for 28 days.

Minor Singles Decided THIS month saw the playing and winning of the Karuah RSL Bowls Club annual Minor Singles Championship. The final was played before a large and knowing crowd at the Club on a beautifully prepared, fast green, in good weather. Dave Austin, Club Vive President, said, “The minor singles is pivotal and hard fought competition and it marks the winner as a major player in our Club.” The final was played between Ben Taylor and Peter Green, both well known and respected long term members of the club. The game was marked by Dave, in line with the tradition that sees the VP appointed as the overseeing official of this vital game. Dave said, “It was a very competitive game played by

two blokes I know well and like, but of course only one could win and that ended up being Peter Green.” Peter, now can no longer compete at the “minor” level and will go on now to only play at the major level. The Major Single Championship has now started in the Club. President Mark Wilkie said, “Any Club member who has not won a minor singles competition before can compete in the minor singles and as we welcome new and transferring players as members, one of these could well take the Title next year.” If you would like to try lawn bowls, come along any Sunday morning for some free lessons. It’s a great game and who knows, you could be the next Minor Singles Champ!

THE clear, fine Autumnal weather no doubt helped to achieve record entries and visitors to this year’s Motorama held at the Tilligerry RSL & Sports Club. There were roughly 400 vehicles vying for trophies in some 20 sections. A crowd

estimated to be around 6000 was in attendance. Food stalls did a roaring trade with our local Lions Club selling out at its sausage sizzle. Stallholders also did very well as did the RSL Club. More details and photos can be found by visiting the

35 Years of Probus Club of Port Stephens

By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens Probus Club is celebrating with its 35th Club Birthday Dinner Dance. 92 members frocked and suited up for the event and were treated to very fine food and danced the night away to the great music of 2 Left Feet. The function room was decked out in Probus colours of blue and yellow and Life Member George Hammond conducted the proceedings with some interference from President Ann. He gave a brief history of the Club which was men only until a few years ago and now boasts over 140 members with an equal gender ratio. Meryl organized a powerpoint of photos from

‘way back when’ to present day and the longest serving member (over 30 years) at this point in time, Doug Pratt cut the celebration cake with Pam Pett who is the widow of the inaugural Secretary, Tony Pett. Ann Gibson of the Port Stephens Probus Club told News Of The Area, “Those who were with the Club at the beginning have seen many changes over the years.” The following morning members fronted up to the monthly meeting where a very surprised and delighted Ron Gibson was awarded Life Membership. His Wife and Probus Club of Port Stephens President Ann Gibson was a bit teary, and had the pleasure of

presenting the Medal and Certificate to her husband. Ron was nominated by Leon Lindsay and seconded by John Townsend and voted in by members present after a plan was hatched to get Ron out of the room. Ron has been a member for 16 years and served on committee for most of that time as Treasurer, BBQ Director, Vice President Administration, President and currently Immediate Past President and Newsletter Editor. He joins the other 2 Life Members of the Club, Leon Lindsay and George Hammond; 3 special men who have contributed so much to Probus Club of Port Stephens.

RAYMOND Terrace Rotary Club is one of many Port Stephens’ groups and clubs celebrating their volunteers this week for Australian Volunteers Week. Here, we shine a light on

what they do, and why they do it. Being a member of a Rotary Club offers friendship, a feeling of belonging to something larger, knowing you make a difference and a sense of achievement from helping others. Rotary offers opportunities to do things you

have never done before, to develop confidence and learn leadership and management skills and much more. Ms Sharon Chambers from Raymond Terrace Rotary told News Of The Area, “Rotary changes lives but it also changes who we are because it changes how we see ourselves and the world.”

Romney Watts takes the stage The perfect Saturday night to warm you up

By Rachael VAUGHAN

She later played in a female duo, The Gems. Performing regularly at clubs and pubs throughout the Sydney region, the duo featured strong harmonies and played popular hits from past to present. More recently Romney has performed as a solo artist playing in some of the finest restaurant bars on the Central Coast. Her repertoire includes

everything from John Lennon and the Pretenders, through to Ben Harper and Springsteen. What better way to spend a saturday night than kicking back with a cool drink, dinner and some smooth tunes amongst great company at this week’s News Of The Area chosen gig.
