By Margie TIERNEY OUTSIDE there was a cold winter wind blowing, but inside IGA in Hawks Nest last week there was plenty of warmth and community spirit in the air. The occasion, was the ‘My Rewards’ celebration event and the launch of the 2018 Community Partnership program. IGA co-owner Peter Trappel was on hand with cheques and donations to a number of community groups including the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club. “We’re very appreciative of the donation and the ongoing support of IGA and the

By Daniel SAHYOUN LYN Styles was farewelled by staff and students at Bulahdelah Central School last week, bringing an end to a sparkling career spanning almost three decades. Having spent countless hours keeping the school spick-and-span during her many years of service, Lyn maintains the time is right to officially retire. “I’ve seen lots of staff come and go over the years, including five Principals,” she said. “It’s been a great place to work and I’ve really enjoyed it, but I’ve been here a long time and I am now happy to retire.” Lyn’s usual working day started at five o’clock each morning for a four-hour stint before the children arrived. She returned at 2.30pm for the afternoon shift and knocked-off at 6.30pm each evening. “The mornings were very quiet and peaceful,” she said. “We vacuumed and dusted every day and scrubbed everything inside and out during the holidays.” Lyn commenced working at BCS in 1991, however her long association with the school began more than 60 years ago as a Kindergarten student in 1956.

Over the years, she has witnessed generations of families progress through the school, including her own three children and some of her grandchildren. “The school is now twice the size that it was,” she said. “The biggest changes have been in technology, there are lots of computers in all the classrooms now.” Although Lyn didn’t want “any fuss” made on her final day of work, which
coincidentally was also her birthday, she was given a special send-off from staff. Dedicated, reliable and hard-working were just a few of the words used to describe the much-loved cleaner who kept the school in immaculate condition. Now retired, Lyn said she plans to spend more time with her family, including her seven grandchildren and great grandchild, who live across NSW and Queensland.

KARUAH & Great Lakes Landcare are holding a free one day weed workshop at Stroud Road on Tuesday May 29th, with the support of MidCoast Council. “Weeds are one of the biggest challenges for good natural resource management, whether
on the farm or in native vegetation areas, so we do give weeds a lot of attention in our catchment wide workshop program,” said Local Landcare Coordinator for Karuah & Great Lakes, Joël Dunn. “This time around we have a great lineup of speakers:
Council’s Strategic Weeds Biosecurity Officer Terry Inkson, bush regenerator Miles Dixon of Active Bush Works, and the venerable Landcare legend Noel Jupp of Riverdene Nursery.” For more information and bookings, please contact Joël on 0401 932 533.

National Volunteer Week By John SAHYOUN
FOR Eric Saville, volunteering has been a normal part of life for well over 40 years. “I have always liked helping people and you get a lot of satisfaction from volunteering,” Eric said. “My mum was a widow and as I was the eldest sibling I knew how hard it was for her. Helping others has stemmed from there.” Eric said he officially started volunteering in 1977. “It was when the Ambulance Service first came to Bulahdelah and I became an honorary officer,” he said. “I’ve been volunteering with community groups ever since.” Amongst the many organisations Eric has generously devoted his time to are the Volunteer Rescue Association, Meals on Wheels and the School Breakfast Club. He served as President of Bulahdelah RSL sub-branch for 16 years and has assisted many war widows over the years. “I help with everyday chores like shopping, you just help out with things they can’t do themselves,” he said. Along with his wife Sue, Eric, who served in the Reserve Forces for 17 years, also voluntarily maintains the Bulahdelah War Memorial. “The old diggers deserve to have a nice area to be remembered, it’s our heritage and our pride,” Eric said. This week is National Volunteer Week with the official theme of ‘Give a little, Change a lot,’ which for Eric, could not be more fitting. “It is definitely not about recognition,” he said. “All we are doing is giving is a little bit of our time, but for the people we help, it means so much more.” According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, almost a quarter of residents in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah volunteered with an organisation or group in 2016, above the National rate of 19 percent. The figures also show the number of local volunteers is on the rise, highlighting the vital role they play in the community. National Volunteer Week, which runs from 21 to 27 May, is an opportunity to say thank you to all those who generously give their time.

the two townships. But like all good things, ‘Juicy’s’ life has come to an end. “With the seat belt regulations being enforced by Transport New South Wales’ it was time to upgrade the bus,” Renee Spiteri said. “Welcome to the newest member of the Bulahdelah bus fleet,” Renee said. “We now have a beautiful new 57 seat belted Scania bus.” But, said Renee, “The new bus needs a name.” And to that end, the school children of Bulahdelah Central School have been given the task of naming
the bus through a colouring-in competition. “There is a prize for the best entry,” said Renee. “$200 will be donated to the school,” and there will be a special prize for the creator of the best picture.” If you haven’t entered the competition yet, there’s still a little time. IT’S been a busy but rewarding few weeks for the local representative of the ‘Share The Dignity‘ campaign, Jodie Genner. The mum of two has once again been collecting personal hygiene products to be distributed to women in crisis. “During the month of April, nearly 400 sanitary products were donated by generous locals,” Jodie said. “All my donations are now being distributed to the Salvation Army and the Port

THERE’S an old saying: always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Maybe your friend just wants to increase your odds in the ‘getting married’ department. I can understand you must be devastated, but being a bridesmaid isn’t always such a great gig. Brides-to-be are hard work. They turn into demanding, expensive bridezillas that want you to spend a fortune on your dress, even though you have yellow-toned skin and they’ve picked the most ridiculous shade of orange, so you look like a rather unwell lobster. You then have to buy matching shoes, knowing you will never wear them again and they’ll be on the Port Stephens Buy Swap and Sell site the day after the wedding for a fraction of what you paid. On top of that there’s the Hens’ Night to organise. This is an event where you invite lots of people who seem to have an inability to forward deposit money. You then need to organise all the trimmings, from ‘friend of the bride’ sashes to phallic straws to a stripper who looks young enough to be your son, in fact ends up being your friend’s son, and all you want to do is wrap him in a blanket and give him a cup of Milo instead of having to endure the embarrassment of watching him gyrate to ‘I Want to be a Cowboy’. At the actual wedding, there’s a whole range of duties to attend to, such as ushering people to their seats, dancing with a groomsman who smells like he’s doused himself in Brut 33, taking the bride to the toilet and holding her dress while she relieves herself, and remaining stone cold sober because she wants you to say a speech. As a guest, you will have so much more fun. You can sit with your partner, drink and eat as much as you like, and when the bride inevitably ends up whinging to you about her bridesmaids, you can just give her a comforting wink and say, ‘It is for that very reason, that you will never be a bridesmaid at my all-expenses-paid wedding in Paris. I care about you too much.’ Carpe diem, Jasminda

MIDCOAST Council will soon begin trucking sand back onto Jimmy’s Beach to replenish areas badly depleted from the January storms and recent bad weather. “You will be aware that leading up to and on the weekend of 12 and 13 May we were subjected to another ‘East Coast Low’ causing high winds and large and powerful surf,” Ken Garrard, President of the Winda Woppa Association said. “On Sunday 13 May we experienced strong winds, large waves and over 50mm rainfall.” “As a result there has been sand erosion at each of the entry points along The Boulevarde, from Gemmala Street to Kururma and at various points between.” “Mid Coast Council had been monitoring the situation with a view to taking immediate remedial action should the situation be critical.” Last week the Council decided to truck sand from Yacaaba, and not the stockpile, because of the cost. Gordon Grainger of the Myall River Action Group questions the decision to take sand from Yacaaba rather than from the stockpile, on the basis that Council (ratepayers funds) were used to create the stockpile for such a contingency. “The use of trucks along the popular Jimmy’s beach will prove an inconvenience to users of the beach and whilst denied by Council, many residents believe the depletion of sand at Yacaaba weakens the peninsula,” Mr Grainger said. “The use of heavy equipment that will be used to load sand could have been employed to remove sand from the developing spit which is rapidly closing the Shortcut entrance,” he said. It’s taken years, but funding has now been

Come in Spinner By Margie TIERNEY
THE art of spinning and weaving may date back centuries, but the craft is still alive and thriving in Tea Gardens. A few years ago, Margaret MacPherson faced a dilemma. “What do you do when you have given your pet sheep a haircut and the result is a large gag of fleece?” Margaret, armed with a purpose and full of
MYALL COAST
enthusiasm, set out to learn how to clean and spin her fleece into a usable yarn. So began an interest in spinning and weaving and working with wool. Margaret is a member of the Myall Community Arts & Craft Centre who meet on Tuesdays to share their skills and knowledge and enjoy one another’s company. Brenda Gore, is the group leader of the Spinning and Weaving group and has a wealth of information on all aspects of the craft.
“We love to welcome new members, no matter what they are interested in, be it spinning, weaving, or just to learn the many aspects of knitting or crocheting ,” Brenda said. The group has two spinning wheels and fleece at the Centre that new members can use while learning the basics. “Each member has their own special areas of interest and skill level.” Brenda added, “Some just love the process of dying and combining yarns into unique combinations of colour and texture.“
“The spinning process itself, while requiring a bit of practice and patience to master, appears to be very relaxing, almost therapeutic.”” “Then the next step is to design and create something with your yarn, which can mean weaving, knitting or crocheting. .” Brenda feels that the success of a group such as this is the bond shared by like minded people who are happy to share their knowledge and skills within the group, at times taking on projects that can be worked on as a group. They also attend workshops and retreats.

R & R PRoPeRty 5 tips For HoMe SeLLeRS 1. Have a spring clean: Look at your home with fresh eyes or get a friend to visit and give you their opinion (listen to them graciously) Too much clutter within a home is stressful and unattractive. 2. Paint job: A lick of fresh paint in neutral tones will give your home a facelift, both inside and out. Remember light colours give an impression of open, airy spaces, which buyers find attractive.

If you have pets inside or you are a smoker, visitors can smell it immediately. 4. Gardens: If your garden is unattractive or non-existent spend a weekend planting some low maintenance but structurally stylish plants in your yard. Paint the front fence and have a nice gate & mailbox.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 16 MAY: The very popular Wednesday Nominated Triples attracted 42 keen bowlers braving a very cold southerly wind and not a lot of sunshine. Only 2 teams won both games and the winners on a count back with +53 points were Danny Johnson, Ross Barry and Bruce Everett. Also on +53 points were the very consistent team of Mark Hair, Col Amos and Ken Devlin. The Myall Bistro voucher was won by Stu Sturrock. 18 May: Friday Open Pairs attracted a few more players this week but I guess until the Pennant season is over participants will be in short supply. 19 May: Round 4 of the Newcastle District Pennants was played today with the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side playing away at Mayfield. They went very close to pulling

off a good win but alas, it was not to be with Mayfield winning the Master Board by 8 shots. The Danny Johnson team recorded a great win 28-16. The Mark Hair four lost by 2, 1618, and in the remaining game the Keith Smith combination were outbowled losing 13-31. The Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 6 side had a bye. Their next game will be at East Maitland whilst the Fours will also play East Maitland at home. 20 May: Sunday Morning Bowls enjoyed great autumn weather with 18 local bowlers joined by another 14 from a Blacktown reunion of rugby players. Following 12 ends of bowls, a great meal was served up by master chef George Winter. Prizes were awarded card draw for best winning lead, second and skip. Make sure you have your name in for next Sunday. The Sunday Bowls was followed by the quarter finals of the Club Major Singles Championship.

Ken Devlin lost to old hand, Jeff Baker, 31-7 and Anthony Grant lost to hot favourite Sean Mearrick 31-5 The exceptions were Ron James who took the game right up to former Club Champion, Richard Lee. Ron Lost 24-31. Another notable exception was Peter Cheney, who not having played a game of singles for 30 years, caused an upset beating Ron Webster 31-24. He will need to retain his form when next week he plays Jeff Baker in the semi-final and in the remaining game Richard Lee will take on Club the 2017 Club Champion, Sean Mearrick. In other news: The Club Secretary is receiving nominations for election to the Bowling Club Management Committee and early indications are that all positions are likely to be filled for the Annual General Meeting on Sunday 24th June.
