THE Kids Hope program was started in 2009 by the school Chaplain at Irrawang Public School, who felt that a number of students would benefit from one-to-one mentoring for various reasons. ‘Kids Hope’ was implemented to fill that need. The program is still going strong nine years later, with 13 current mentors/mentees and one substitute mentor. With funding by Raymond Terrace Community Church (RTCC), the program is coordinated by Michelle Bryan and run with Volunteers from RTCC. Children are selected by the Principal and teachers, and each child meets with their mentor for one hour each week at

The ceremony was attended by the local Federal Member for Patterson Meryl Swanson MP with Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer presiding over proceedings. “It is such a great privilege to bear witness to the Citizenship ceremonies of our newest Australians,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area. “Citizenship is a mark of identity and it’s a very considered choice.” “Many of us may take our Australian citizenship for granted, but we should never underestimate what a defining and life-changing choice it can be,” she said. Diggers Night
RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area Vic Jones, President of the local RSL, took charge of the formalities of the day. Raymond Terrace Lions Club shouted the Servicemen and Servicewomen their meal, and presented them with a ‘long neck’ to take home. Judith Bee, President of Raymond Terrace Lions Club, told News Of The Area, “It was a great night, and as usual enjoyed by everyone attending.” “A special evening to honour our servicemen and servicewomen, both past and present.”

By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace Lions Club hosted a successful ‘Diggers Night’ last week,

Toonworld sparks creativity By Rachael VAUGHAN THE jobs of the future are going to be very different to the jobs we have today, and as such, there is a push to enable our children to embrace the concept of creativity as much as the traditional ‘Three R’s’. An organisation helping to do just that is Toonworld. Toonworld facilitate cartooning and animation workshops to encourage, empower, educate and entertain children as a vacation care provider as well as an in-school creative specialist that improve their confidence and creativity.
Recently one of Toonworld’s Directors, Mike Wheeler, made the move to Raymond Terrace. “We’re looking forward to injecting more creativity into the Port Stephens community with our creative workshops,” Mike Wheeler told News Of The Area. “We are already speaking with the local Council about running workshops in the Library in the school holidays, so parents and kids, stay tuned.” Toonworld is also embarking on a trip to the United Arab Emirates next week to teach animation to
children at the world famous Sharjah Reading Festival for two weeks. The Sharjah Reading Festival is a cultural celebration attracting more than 306,000 visitors with over 120 exhibitors entertaining visitors with 2093 educational and funfilled activities in a familyfriendly atmosphere. “This is a great opportunity for our Company and we are looking forward to the experience,” Mike Wheeler told News Of The Area. “We will no doubt learn as much as we teach and we hope to bring all of those lessons back to Australia so we can share these with the students of Port Stephens.”
storytelling. Each Digger present at the event gave their name and a brief tale of their time in the military. RAAF Warrant Officer/Air Combat group Rudi Vitasz was the main guest speaker. He spoke of the changing roles in the Airforce, and gave an example of a female Officer in USA who is a mother to three children at night, and flying a drone by day in a warfare role, showing a distinct conflict of emotions by those present. CPL Meredith Wilson was given the prestigious role of being the bugler for the event.

The end result is a fast and skilful game that relies on a player’s imagination and creativity to create chances. opportunities that simply don’t happen very often. Alex is on his way to Malaysia for a twoweek tour incorporating high level coaching clinics, several games including participating in the Zafica Cup and tours of the many cities that Alex will be staying in. William on the other hand will be travelling a little further away than his little brother. The sights and sounds of Barcelona are awaiting him and his teammates as they embark on a tour that will no doubt be something they never forget. High class coaching, high class opponents and the opportunity to watch futsal being played by some of the very best in the world. Not bad for a couple of kids from the Port Stephens area. And you never know, if the International Olympic Committee decides to give futsal an opportunity at an Olympic Games in the near future, we may see Alex and William in the green and gold doing their best to win a medal. Now that really would be something. In the meantime, bon voyage guys.
