Car wash for Cambodia By Rachael VAUGHAN A retired teaching couple from Irrawang High School are doing wonderful things for a very good cause. Mr Owen and Mrs Jan Holbert have supported some of the poorest Cambodian communities for some years, and have made a huge difference in the lives of so many families. They also contribute to a number of Australian charity foundations. Over the last few years, they have fundraised for donations for everything from bicycles and water filtration systems to school uniforms and schools supplies. Students at Irrawang Public School, on learning of the Holbert’s efforts, were motivated to contribute to the cause, and with this CONTINUED Page 2

Council Award Winners By Rachael VAUGHAN

PORT Stephens Council had a special start to their regular meeting in their Raymond Terrace Council Chambers last week. A number of awards were presented to Councillors, past and present, acknowledging their work in Port Stephens. These awards recognised years of service on Council, and the broader contribution that the recipients have made to the community of Port Stephens. Geoff Dingle, former Councillor for Port Stephens Council was presented with a number of awards on the evening. He received the prestigious Freemans Award given out every Australia Day, as well as a Certificate of Service for 13 years from 2004-2017. Geoff spoke to the audience in the chambers, many of whom attended to support the presentation of his awards, and gave a passionate speech. Geoff told News Of The Area, “The past 13.5 years with Port Stephens Council

has been a large part of my life and I don’t regret any of it.” “I was elected on my inaugural independent ticket based on community commitment, encouraged to run by mentor and past Mayor and State member John Bartlett.” “John demonstrated to me and our community that if you want things to change for the better in your community, you need to speak up and step up to the plate,” he said. Geoff was an integral part of many committees and associated endeavours related to Medowie’s growth, and has left an impressive list of achievements. He continues on with many of these committee, past his retirement from Council representative duties. Geoff said, “Post Council I’m satisfied with my contribution, I’m personally fit and happy living in our new home, still in Medowie, and my blood pressure is perfect.” “Libby and I continue with a diverse range of community work and activity, our plan is to live long and happy healthy

life styles and continue supporting our wonderful community and family for as long as we live.” There were a number of other celebrated award winners during the presentation event. Former Mayor Bruce MacKenzie, who was unable to attend on the night, received an Outstanding Service Award for 25 years or more on Council, from 19681999 and 2008-2017. He also received an Emiterus Mayor pin for his time as President, Deputy President and Mayor for 15 years. Cr Ken Jordan was awarded a Certificate of Service for 13 years from 2004-2017, and Deputy Mayor in 2011. Cr Steve Tucker received a Certificate of Service for 13 years from 2004-2017, and Deputy Mayor in 2006 and 2014. Cr Sally Dover was awarded her Certificate of Service for 13 years from 2004-2017 and Deputy Mayor in 2007, 2010 and 2012. Cr Dover was also

Community Fun day EASTER Saturday turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and the Historic Rectory Grounds at Raymond Terrace were buzzing with excitement and activity. R & R Property held their first Community Easter Egg Hunt, which was well attended by families across Port Stephens. Denise Haynes, Managing Director of R & R Property, told News Of The Area the day was extremely well attended. “We knew that over 170 children were registered for the event, as parents were asked to fill out a form on our website prior to attending,” she said. “Well the community certainly turned out and they had lots of fun,” she added. The event was completely organised, paid for and produced by the Team at R & R Property. Included in the day’s activities was a giant egg hunt, face painting, balloon animals, egg & spoon races,

colouring in, a guessing competition and gifts. Real live Easter bunnies Lola & Bambi were also on hand for cuddles and photos, all of which was provided complimentary by the R & R Team. Denise said, “Initially we really had no idea whether the local community would be interested in such an event and we were certainly relieved that we made it a condition of entry that parents had to register their children, providing us with an idea of numbers attending.” “We were happily overwhelmed with the response.” Parents and children travelled from Medowie, Seaham, Brandy Hill, Clarence Town and Stroud plus of course Raymond Terrace to join in the family fun. Denise has been pleased with the feedback, telling News Of The Area, “Both at the event and since it has finished, I have been

As a part of the Port Stephens Youth Week celebrations the Tomaree Youth Community Action group is holding a massive skate and scooter competition. A free bus will leave Sturgeon Street at Raymond Terrace at 8am, picking up from Medowie on Ferodale Road at 8.20am, Lemon Tree Passage at 8.40am opposite President Wilson Walk, Anna Bay at 9.15am near the chemist and arriving at Fly Point at 9.30am. 3.30pm and will drop off in the reverse order of the pick up schedule. Port Stephens Councillor Glen Dunkley told News Of The Area, “Events like these that engage our youth are becoming more and more important in our community with so many challenges facing the youth of today. “Port Stephens Council is committed to providing safe and healthy community and are proud to be working with TYCA and their supporters on this event.” All ages and abilities are welcome, in various divisions, the skate and scoot competition will also be a great event for spectators to enjoy. “ We would encourage everyone to get involved, use

the bus service and come down to Skate Park and check it out,” he said. TYCA invites everyone to come along and enjoy a day of social inclusion, fun, market stalls, demonstrations, giveaways and the opportunity to showcase you skate and scooter skills. You can register to participate at https:// tyca.wufoo.com/forms/1registration-form/ entries are $2. Riding skateboards and scooters is an inherently risky activity, participants enter this competition at their own risk. All participants MUST wear a helmet and protective gear, riders without the appropriate equipment will not be allowed to compete.

east coast, from Cairns to Melbourne, in bands such as Spook, Cornstalk, Omega Red, Quaan and duos such as: The Bad & The Ugly, and Brothers Grim, With a song list as long as your arm, Lee can play any style to ensure everyone in the audience enjoys their night. From some easy listening, to some more upbeat Classic Rock, Top 40 and enough Dance Music to have people on the floor all night. While you’re organising your night out, why not book in extra time before the gig to have dinner at the Muree Golf Club Bistro and buy a few tickets in the meat raffle. Make a night of it, book a babysitter for the kids and patron the local clubs and pub that support the local live music scene and artists.

our thanks to everyone who attended and made the day a success, but a special thank you must go to the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club who generously allowed us to use their beautiful rectory grounds to hold this amazing

Raymond Terrace teenager Blair Soars could be classed as a veteran of his chosen sport, yet he hasn’t even reached his eighteenth birthday.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

RAYMOND Terrace teenager Blair Soars could be classed as a veteran of his chosen sport, yet he hasn’t even reached his eighteenth birthday. Now, that doesn’t sound like your typical sports story, but then again Blair isn’t your typical teenager either. You see, Blair is a veteran of the sport of lawn bowls, a sport of subtle skill and

Any way you look at it, it is quite the sporting resume, but Blair is far from being finished just yet with another busy schedule awaiting him in 2018. “I have the NSW Combined High Schools singles and pairs, the Noel Soane pairs event, Newcastle District Bowling Association pennants and junior triples as well as the state junior four’s titles coming up this season.” Blair told News Of The Area. In the years that have passed, Blair has made quite a name for himself. His numerous achievements include winning the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club ‘s Corey
