NAVIGATING METRO ATLANTA’S ITP AND OTP LOCALES

Do you want to live ITP? Or do you prefer to be OTP?

If you’re new to metro Atlanta, you may have no idea what either of those acronyms mean. Fortunately, KNOWAtlanta can help you be in the know when it comes to navigating the metro area’s most-loved locales and choosing the perfect place to call home.

Name That Acronym!

If you’re ITP, that means you are Inside the Perimeter.

When you’re OTP, you’re Outside the Perimeter.

So, what constitutes the Perimeter? That would be Interstate 285, or I-285, a major interstate highway loop that encircles Atlanta and connects I-75, I-85 and I-20 to the city. Anything that falls within the loop is recognized as ITP. Areas beyond the borders of the loop are considered to be OTP.

Location is Everything

Some of the most popular ITP cities, towns, districts and neighborhoods include Midtown Atlanta, Downtown Atlanta, Buckhead, Decatur, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, VirginiaHighland, Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward and East Point, among many others. The two main counties that fall ITP are Fulton and DeKalb counties, while small portions of Cobb and Clayton counties also fall within the Perimeter.

Savor Your Surroundings

The ITP lifestyle is synonymous with urban big city life, complete with industry, entertainment, culture, high-end residential offerings and more. The bustling atmosphere inside the Perimeter is replete with places to go and people to see. The area is popular with young couples and professionals who enjoy condo and townhome living, yet single-family homes are becoming more prevalent in the area for those who want to enjoy the intown way of life.

The rest of metro Atlanta’s many counties fall outside the Perimeter, including Cobb, Cherokee, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Henry and several others. Sought-after OTP cities are such spots as Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth, Suwanee, Cumming, Braselton, Gainesville, Woodstock, Kennesaw, Marietta, Smyrna, Fayetteville, Peachtree City and McDonough.

Those who choose the OTP lifestyle typically have an inclination for spacious homes with yards, local parks and green space and room to grow. And while these suburban spots often have been seen as providing a slower pace than metro Atlanta’s core, there has been an evolution in recent years, with many downtown areas undergoing redevelopment efforts that mix small-town charm with urban convenience. n

Peachtree Corners: A Dream Realized

Atlanta has become recognized as one of the country’s most innovative and welcoming technology hubs in recent years. However, not many people realize that the metro area’s high-tech roots actually lie just over 20 miles north of the City of Atlanta in the southwest corner of Gwinnett County. It’s there— situated on 17 square miles of land—that Peachtree Corners has grown from a small rural community into a burgeoning, bustling city that’s home to more than 45,000 residents and some of the world’s most disruptive technology companies. In fact, the city, which officially was founded on July 1, 2012, has become known for its exceptional balance of outstanding economic activity and unparalleled quality of life.

Business as Usual

The vision for Peachtree Corners dates to the 1960s when successful businessman Paul Duke pitched the idea of creating a planned technology-based community that would include a campus of low-rise buildings designed to be a center of business innovation and house an array of fledgling high-tech companies. Duke’s idea was to keep Georgia Tech graduates in the State of Georgia by attracting businesses across the tech sector, and he saw great potential in the area that was once known as Pinckneyville in North-

east Georgia. He looked to North Carolina’s renowned Technology Triangle for inspiration, and Technology Park Atlanta was born. By the early 1970s, the center was up and running, having attracted such names as Scientific Atlanta — and now Cisco and Hayes Microcomputer — to the area, as well as a growing residential base of engineers and scientists. Today, the 500-acre Technology Park Atlanta continues to thrive and is home to a host of Fortune 500 businesses. It also serves as the center of what is now being called “Silicon Orchard.”

As part of the renovation effort that began several years ago, the city created the Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners, a 5G-enabled living laboratory for startups and established companies to deploy and test developing technologies in a real-world testing environment. The lab, which is a nonprofit associated with the city, helps to support public-private partnerships and features smart city infrastructure on a three-mile roadway called the “city street of the future”, which includes an autonomous vehicle test lane and multiple smart city technologies including C-V2X, LiDAR, solar roadway, a 25,000-square-foot innovation center and more. The overall testing environment found at Curiosity Lab has attracted several partners, including T-Mobile, Cisco, Georgia Tech, Bosch,

UPS, Georgia Power and many other corporations. Domestic and international companies and startups can test their technologies in Curiosity Lab’s ecosystem free of charge, making the lab a very exciting part of the growing entrepreneurial community.

Over the years, Peachtree Corners has received national and international recognition for its dedication to being a pioneering technology hub and an economic development engine that helps support more than 45,000 jobs for residents throughout the city and across the area. For instance, the city and Curiosity Lab were awarded a Smart 50 Award for “Defining the Blueprint for Smart Cities in the U.S.” Additionally, Peachtree Corners received the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Smart Cities 2022 Jury

Award for creating one of the most unique and advanced smart city ecosystems in the world. The Curiosity Lab was also named a winner in the 2023 IDC Government Insights’ sixth annual Smart Cities North America Awards in the economic development category.

Living the Life

Peachtree Corners’ impressive economic development initiatives have allowed the city to grow at an unprecedented rate, and it now is the largest city in Gwinnett County. It also is known as a family-friendly municipality that offers excellent residential options, access to an outstanding school system and a lifestyle that includes shopping, dining and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages.

To start, Peachtree Corners offers a variety of housing types, with single-family homes, townhomes, multifamily residences and senior communities. Many of the areas of the city are walkable, and pedestrian mobility is expanding regularly with newly added sections to the local multi-use trail system. Of course, at the heart of Peachtree Corners’ welcoming atmosphere is the 21acre Town Center, which offers shopping, restaurants, space for outdoor concerts, an elevated teak deck that overlooks the Town Green, children’s play structures and much more. The popular spot often plays host to free weekend entertainment and an array of activities, and the entire city is seeing a real renaissance with an increase in retail and dining options. Additionally, The Forum shopping center is a popular place for shoppers and another excellent location for spending time with family and friends.

Recently, ten companies have announced their relocation, expansion or launch in metro Atlanta and beyond in the coming years. Meissner Corporation, a bioprocessing company specializing in advanced microfiltration and therapeutic manufacturing systems, will invest almost $250 million in a new facility in Athens-Clarke County, creating more than 1,700 jobs over the next eight years. Meissner develops, manufactures, supplies and services products and systems for the

pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. Its products have been critical in the development and distribution of lifesaving therapeutics and vaccines for COVID-19. The new facility will more than double the company’s manufacturing footprint in the U.S. and will include state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities, laboratories, research and development and office spaces. Operations are expected to begin in early 2026, with the company hiring for a broad range of roles, including technicians, scientists and engineers, as well as IT and administrative positions. The company plans to work with the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia to explore potential internship and other collaboration opportunities through relevant programs of study.

a new manufacturing facility in Cartersville. HAGA will invest an estimated $147 million and create over 160 jobs as it becomes the only United States-based company to manufacture solar encapsulants. The plant, which will be located at Highland 75 Corporate/Industrial Park, a Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD) certified site, will supply Qcells’ solar panel factory, which itself is expanding with a $1.7 billion investment in Georgia. Hanwha’s facility is expected to come online in the summer of 2024 and will be hiring for a variety of positions, including engineers and line operators. The move underscores a growing trend of U.S. solar panel makers and suppliers that are focusing on domestic production amid concerns over supply chain disruptions, particularly in Asia.

The new manufacturing facility will produce EV body parts for original equipment manufacturers, including Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, and will be operational beginning in 2025. This announcement fulfills the commitment to create jobs and investment in all four of the Savannah Harbor Interstate-16 Joint Development Authority (JDA) counties resulting from the Hyundai Metaplant location in Bryan County, the state’s largest economic development project. It also surpasses the initial estimates, with suppliers for the Metaplant committing more than $1.8 billion in investment. The Rincon facility is expected to employ 1,600 people and will be located at the Grande View Industrial Park.

METRO ATLANTA’S CONDO COMMUNITIES CONTINUE TO COMMAND THE LOCAL HOME BUYING MARKET

If it seems like you’re hearing about people purchasing condos more often in today’s residential market, you’re right. Particularly in metro Atlanta, the condo has become one of the most sought-after housing options, as homebuilders craft spectacular properties in various locations throughout the area. And there’s a good reason for the growing focus on condominiums.

“We’ve been feeling the shift toward more walkable, engaging neighborhoods in metro Atlanta for years now. You see it intown with places like Midtown adding millions of square feet of new development in the last decade and in more suburban areas like Alpharetta and Woodstock establishing their own town centers. It’s really a return to the way cities were designed historically and a paradigm shift for lifestyle options in Atlanta. And condominiums and walkable neighborhoods go hand-inhand,” explains Meghan McMullen, director of market research for Engel & Völkers Atlanta. “Condos provide enough residential density to support thriving local shops and restaurants, as well as transit, and the public spaces in these kinds of neighborhoods act as an extension of condo living.”

Additionally, according to Jonathan Carter, Toll Brothers’ senior vice president in Georgia, “Home buyers are drawn to a luxury, urban lifestyle in some of Atlanta’s most vibrant neighborhoods close to everything the city has to offer, but they still want a beautiful new home with all the latest design features. There is a limited

supply of developable land in urban Atlanta, and this dynamic is driving an increase in condominium communities with attractive, creatively designed condominium homes.”

By the Numbers

In recent years, condos have not only been popping up all across the metro Atlanta area, but also have been purchased at increasing rates year over year. As McMullen notes, “A decade ago, there were 2,420 condos sold ITP [inside the perimeter] in a year. As of this [past] March, there were 3,187 condos sold in the last year, up 32 percent in 10 years. Condo sales ITP peaked in the 12-month period ending in February 2022, right before mortgage rates began rising. Homes of all types have had fewer sales since then due to higher interest rates, but the long-term trend is still significant, and it doesn’t seem to be a shift away from condos as desirable lifestyle option.”

For many people, affordability is a key element when considering the purchase of a condo. “Condo living can be a more affordable option in some of Atlanta’s most desirable neighborhoods. People can achieve the urban lifestyle they desire at an affordable price,” Carter observes.

McMullen agrees, adding, “Affordability can be a draw. In March — the average sale price for a condo ITP was $385,921 compared to $653,352 for a detached single-family home or $583,415 for a townhome. Condos can be a great way to buy into your dream neighborhood at a price that fits your budget, especially if you’re looking to live ITP.”

You Can Always Get What You Want

There are several common features and amenities that are offered by local condominium properties, and these typically are based on what today’s home buyers want in terms of their overall lifestyle. Carter points to everything from low-maintenance living, practical storage solutions and flexible interior floor plan options to a variety of shared community amenities that can all be selling features of a community. McMullen also notes the popularity of the lockand-leave lifestyle that often is afforded by condo communities. She says, “For buyers who travel frequently or are tired of taking care of the big yard, this simplicity can be a major plus.” What’s

more, she continues, “For those living alone, the sense of community and safety of a condo building can bring peace of mind.”

Of course, condos also offer a certain level of luxury and sophistication, with opulent and spacious interiors, high-end appliances and finishes, spectacular architectural details, exclusive amenities (such as 24-hour concierge service, full onsite gyms and dog walking services) and much more. They also tend to be found in ideal locations that offer access to a wide array of neighborhood spots, from restaurants and shopping destinations to parks and exciting outdoor venues.

Where to Start

If condo living is appealing to you, then it’s important to have a bit of guidance as you navigate the local condo market. McMullen suggests starting the process by asking yourself a few questions that will help you prioritize what matters most to you in your home search. She says, “Do you have your heart set on a certain neighborhood? Is natural light the biggest factor? Do you prefer traditional design or more of a loft-style space? Are you interested in a high-rise or a mid-rise building? Have a strong sense of what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to com-

promise on. Communicating these priorities clearly to your agent will make a big difference.”

You also need to understand the state of the current condo market, as there have been a few changes in recent years. For instance, while there are many condo communities being constructed throughout the area, condo inventory is still a bit low in metro Atlanta compared to other years. McMullen advises, “You may have to be patient. There were just 578 condos on the market in the entire ITP area in March, 34 percent fewer than the same time in 2019, even though new condos were delivered since that time. The lower inventory can be challenging for picky buyers, but there are still great options out there. An upside of today’s market is that buyers have a bit more time to make a thoughtful decision. Last March, ITP condos were under contract in a week on average. This March, it was more like a month—still about a week faster than the same time in 2019. That extra time is valuable when you’re making a big lifestyle and financial decision, and if interest rates decline slightly later this year as forecasted, it’s likely the pace will pick up again. Be prepared to search widely and be open-minded and ready to pounce when you find the right one.”

Metro Atlanta’s 2023 New Home Market Update

In early 2023, the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association welcomed its newly elected executive committee, which is helmed by President Maurice Lester, who serves as vice President of Construction for JW Collection. In a recent letter to the association, he shared his excitement and enthusiasm not only for the opportunity to serve in the role, but also for metro Atlanta’s new home market. He wrote:

“I am grateful and honored to be the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association 2023 president as together we continue to strengthen the economy, the industry, the communities we serve and our members’ businesses. Thanks to the strong leadership of [the] association, the Home Builders Association of Georgia and the National Association of Home Builders, we are doing everything in our power to create an environment for a healthy housing market.”

And it is a healthy market, indeed.

According to John Hunt, founder and president of MarketNsight, which provides on-demand research and analysis for homebuilders, developers, real estate brokers and investors, while the pandemic and subsequent Federal Reserve interest rate hikes designed to fight inflation put a damper on the local market for a bit of time, it appears to be rebounding and showing signs of great improvement in 2023. As he notes:

• MarketNsight forecasts that 13,000 to 15,000 lots will be put on the ground by homebuilders this year across the 26-county metro area.

• Outlying metro counties are seeing increased sales traffic since buyers can now work from anywhere and are looking for affordability and desirable amenities in these areas.

• While increased housing demand burned off many lots that builders had to build on during the pandemic, there is a concerted effort to replace the supply. MarketNsight sees an upward trend for permitting as new deals come online this year and are expected to continue through 2023.

• Across metro Atlanta, there is very little resale inventory because people are locked into their three percent mortgage

rates and don’t want to give them up for rates at six percent or above. New homes are more readily available, and builders have the ability to offer incentives to buyers who are relocating to Atlanta. All told, new home market shares have exploded in the first quarter of 2023, and the number was up 89 percent in March over 2022.

On the one hand, staying in a hotel for that length of time would be costly and unfeasible. On the other, most rental apartments come unfurnished and require a lease for a fixed amount of time. How do you find a short-term rental solution that is flexible enough for your needs but won’t break the bank while your home is being renovated? The good news is there are several options available that you might not have previously considered. Let’s explore some of these short-term rental options and look at some additional tips to help you find the solution that’s best for you.

Reasons for Needing Temporary Housing During Renovations

Granted, many home renovations aren’t intrusive enough to require you to vacate the home—for example, if you’re remodeling a bedroom or adding a room. However, when you’re facing major renovations or repairs, moving out temporarily makes more sense—and in some cases, it may be mandatory. Let’s look at two of the most common instances in which you might need alternative temporary housing.

Major Elective Renovations

If you choose to perform major updates in several parts of the home, there’s an

increased chance that the home itself may be unlivable while renovations are in progress. Extended Stay Hotels

Extended stay hotels typically provide suite-like accommodations at discounted weekly or even monthly rates. They are generally more affordable than conventional hotels, but they can still be pricey over the course of a few months. Additionally, even if the suite provides a kitchen or kitchenette, it will still feel much like a hotel, which can have a negative effect on family moods after a time.

Sublets

One temporary housing option to consider is finding someone willing to sublet their home or apartment to you.

Occasionally, people currently under a lease may sublet part or all of their space to someone else, either to help with rent or to occupy the entire unit while they are traveling. Sublets can often be found through Craigslist, by word-of-mouth or through social media. While subletting can be a good solution for some, be aware that unless you know and trust the person implicitly, the risk for scamming is higher with this option.

Vacation Rentals (Airbnb, Vrbo)

Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo have become quite popular in recent years, allowing individual “hosts” to rent out rooms, apartments or entire vacation homes for days, weeks or months at a time. These vacation rentals provide a better sense of “home” and typically come furnished, but they aren’t always cheap, and some users have reported bad experiences and the occasional scam.

Corporate Housing and Short-Term Rentals

One fairly reliable alternative to finding short-term rentals is to consult a corporate housing agency. These agencies focus on providing fully furnished temporary apartments for people who need to stay for a few weeks or months. While many people using corporate housing are business travelers on extended stays, these units are also ideal for locals who need a place to live for a couple of weeks to a couple of months. You can specify the amount of space and type of amenities you need, and the agency will find you a comfortable, well-appointed apartment for the same price (or less) than that of an extended stay hotel.

Additional Tips for Finding the Best Housing Solution

When you stay in temporary housing, you want to make sure the place offers the comfort and convenience that you

and your family need, especially since you will be there for a while. Here are a few other factors to consider when deciding on short-term housing.

• Your renovation timeline. You may only have an estimate as to when renovations will be complete, and the end date may change based on unexpected circumstances. Be sure the place you rent gives you at least month-to-month flexibility and doesn’t lock you into a commitment for longer than you need.

• Pet accommodations. If you have one or more pets, look specifically for pet-friendly accommodations. Otherwise, you may have to house your pet with friends, or worse, pay for a kennel. Location. While renovations are ongoing,

you still have to go to work and the kids still have school. Try to find temporary housing that doesn’t extend your commute times to the point of inconvenience.

• Cleanliness and sanitation. Be sure to ask your host or agent about what steps are being taken to clean your temporary housing and be certain you’re comfortable with their answers.

• Your stuff. You’ll probably need to bring additional luggage for an extended stay, along with sensitive paperwork and possibly some keepsakes. Be sure to ask about storage options for things you need to bring with you. n

As children enter elementary school, their parents want to ensure that their young students will be best prepared to face an evolving, complex world. Children need to develop critical analytic skills, creative thinking and problem-solving adeptness, effectively laying a foundation for their careers and their lives. Learning to gather information can evolve into a lifelong routine as the children grow into adulthood and careers. Parents often turn to STEM education for their children to develop a knowledge base of science, technology, engineering and math. Fortunately, many of Atlanta’s private schools focus on STEM education with an array of programs for even the youngest of elementary-age students, perhaps stoking their interest and guiding them toward a future career. Here, KNOWAtlanta looks at the many offerings available at independent schools throughout the area.

Spectacular Science

For so many children, science is one of the first areas of learning that really piques their interest. And local private schools gladly provide numerous

opportunities for them to delve into the scientific world.

North Cobb Christian School focuses on developing young children’s natural curiosity and “love for exploring God’s world around them,” says Wendy Titus, lower school principal. “The curriculum engages them in hands-on experiences, developing a strong foundational understanding of scientific concepts from the scientific method to Newton’s laws of motion.”

Teachers bring science to life through nature walks, experiments and other areas. She adds, “Each spring our classrooms are literally alive with ant farms, earthworm habitats, butterfly houses and seedlings as our students become immersed in the world of plants and insects.”

Da Vinci International School students also learn about ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation in the elementary school’s environmental science program. Students often plant and maintain gardens and observe wildlife, and the school offers a curriculum that encour-

ages curiosity and creativity through nature-based activities starting at 18 months. “Our presence within the Blue Heron Wildlife Preserve is instrumental,” says Soraya Rouchdi, founder and director. “Exploring the outdoors and observing plants and animals helps the students develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around them and the ability to be attentive to details.” Additionally, the school’s chemistry program introduces a variety of concepts; for instance, students learn about the spherification of liquids by cooking a strawberry Charlotte with a pomegranate coulis that is turned into spheres using sodium alginate added to the liquid, which is then dropped into a calcium chloride solution. “The sodium alginate reacts with the calcium chloride, forming a thin membrane around the liquid droplet, creating a sphere,” Rouchdi says. “The resulting spheres can be used to add visual interest and unique textures to dishes in molecular cooking.”

In August of 2022, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School opened a new lower school building, which houses state-ofthe-art science labs designed for younger learners. Students in first through fifth grades learn plant science, geology, food science, insects, animals, coding and more. Teachers utilize tools such as Sphero kits, Makey Makey and Bee Bots to enhance their lessons. Lower school students complete hands-on (and sometimes messy) projects in various areas of study, using both indoor labs and outdoor spaces, which include classroom gardens.

content, providing teacher training to ensure that the staff understands the benefits of a STEAM (STEM with arts) program and incorporate it. Students are encouraged to build and engineer contraptions to use during recess, incorporating science into each subject and make it feel like play.

Tremendous Technology

In today’s high-tech world, it is key to introduce young students to technology in a variety of ways, from the educational tools that are used to the concepts that will lead them into the future.

For instance, third through fifth graders at Mount Paran Christian School learn with Chromebooks, while kindergarten through grade 2 students use iPads. Coding and technology are integrated into STEAM lessons across grades, and students often participate in robotics camps, according to Randi Terry, middle school instructional technology and innovation lead.

Students at The Lovett School use shared iPad carts from kindergarten through second grade and third graders have 11 iPads per class, while fourth and fifth graders have one-to-one devices. “With ample technology, teachers can integrate it seamlessly into the curriculum and provide students with access to valuable educational resources,” says Karen Boykins, inGen teacher. Furthermore, technology is essential in the computer science, design and engineering curriculum. “The Lovett School fosters innovation and creativity through handson activities like robots, 3D printing and a Glowforge laser cutter,” Boykins continues. “Students learn through creating, and technology empowers them to become innovators and designers for success in a constantly evolving digital world.” Teachers in the school’s technology department attend conferences such as the Georgia Educational Technology Consortium, the Atlanta Area Tech-

nology Educators and the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools. The school’s academic team meets regularly to discuss tech’s future impact on teaching and on students.

North Cobb Christian School starts technology learning at a very early age, with preschool students exploring robotics and programming. At the lower school level, students use one-to-one Chromebooks starting in first grade. BeeBots help elementary students develop skills and knowledge in coding, problem solving, creativity and collaboration. And teachers explore new tools and platforms at a professional learning period once a week to examine technological advances in education.

Students at Holy Innocents’ lower school receive access to iPads, laptops and robotics. Students also learn good digital citizenship, the impact of their digital footprint and the pros and cons of technology. “Technology is infused in their everyday practice,” says Nicole St. Amand, lower school principal. “They learn to use technology and learn to use it responsibly.”

Atlanta Speech School’s technology integration specialist researches current tools and brings that technology to life throughout the curriculum. Instructors work with multi-sensory methods to help children bridge the gap from the abstract to the concrete in math and science concepts. The school’s mission is to ensure that each child develops their full potential through language and literacy, and STEM programming makes that possible.

Excellent Engineering

Of course, engineering is next level when it comes to technology-based learning. And children of all ages can enjoy this area of study at local private schools.

The Lovett School’s lower school inGen Studio is described as a makerspace and inspirational hub for students. In kindergarten through fifth grade, students have classes in the studio. They explore web tools and applications, computer programming and engineering, according to Mason Sutherland, associate director of admission. Students begin by learning design processes to build out their ideas. According to Boykins, this is just the beginning for younger students. She notes, “Due to the nature and design of our lower school inGen Studio, students can explore their interests in engineering curriculum that will set them up for success as they progress to middle and upper school at Lovett.”

robots to perform various tasks and challenges, says Rouchdi. “If the learners are reading a story about a village or a city, they will build the village model with cardboards and recycling materials and will help the characters navigate through the city while coding the robots.” Using solar panels, the houses can be lit, with students making switches using electrical circuits. Students also develop skills in algorithms and computational thinking through coding with visual programming languages in the school’s computer science program. Additionally, Da Vinci students design and build solutions to real-world problems in engineering design challenges such as building bridges, small machines or a solar-powered house, and designing a parachute.

At North Cobb Christian School, STEM is integrated across subjects on a regular basis, Titus says. Engineering is a key element of that effort. “One of our students’ favorite areas on campus is

the STEAM Courtyard, a special garden featuring raised beds filled with herbs, flowers, vegetables and plants, tended by our students in preschool through fourth grade,” she explains. Recently the fourth graders worked with the high school’s engineering class to design and construct a greenhouse for the courtyard, equipped with a water collection system, solar panels, humidity control, planting shelves and more. Marvelous Math

For example, Mount Paran offers advanced math in fifth grade to help the students prepare for advanced and accelerated math in middle and high school. Also, third to fifth graders who need academic support can learn through the school’s directed studies math offerings. North Cobb Christian School offers a “rigorous and engaging” math curriculum designed to promote deep understanding, problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning in students, Titus says. And Da Vinci International School students engage in projects that involve collecting and analyzing data so students learn measurement, data collection and statistical analysis.

The enrichment team in physical education, art, music and media at The Wardlaw School, Atlanta Speech School’s designated K-6 school for children who have dyslexia, developed a teaching model centered around STEAM through architecture, instrument building, game designing, broadcasting, coding and rollercoaster construction. Fourth and fifth grade students transition through six different classes spread over enrichment in 25-day sessions. They problem solve, socialize and employ higher-ordered thinking and reason through collaborative learning experiences. Each STEAM session begins with a book, connecting the vocabulary, skills and ideas of the story to the vision the children need

to navigate that session. Students then demonstrate and discuss what they learned during each session at a two-day exhibition.

Mount Paran Christian School uses both the STEM and STEAM approaches in educational methodology, according to Tina Baker, head of school. She says, “With the K-12 Project Lead the Way curriculum, learning experiences are authentic, hands-on and application-oriented. Students are engaged as investigators, experimenters, designers and makers.” Kindergarten through fifth grade students learn critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication through hands-on learning in their weekly STEAM classes, Randi Terry adds, “Students begin understanding the basics of computer science in programming using Code.org. Lower schoolers are able to explore and create using MinecraftEdu and through a makerspace in a large, designated area within the Myrick Media Center. Second and third graders work in the on-campus garden, growing and studying plants with hands-on experience, bringing their learning to life.” Students also can participate in extracurricular STEAM and robotics exploration through the First Lego League, as well as Project Lead the Way engineering program for young learners.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School students start STEAM in kindergarten in the Brainstormers class, a hands-on collaborative for experience for PK3 through kindergarten, incorporating elements of design thinking and STEAM. The class takes students on a deeper dive into understanding how things work and why, and they practice and master teamwork in Brainstormers.

At North Cobb Christian School, the Thanksgiving STEAM parade is a favorite STEAM tradition, she says. “Students spend weeks in class brainstorming and creating unique contraptions to share during the parade,” Titus says. Utilizing

STEAM principles, students design and craft every element of the parade from floats to costumes. Each grade level completes a STEAM challenge each year from building a “turkey trampoline” to creating their own musical instruments to performing a Spanish song along the parade route.

Finally, Whitefield Academy incorporates into its STEAM programs the four Cs: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication. While the STEAM program is woven through all grades, fifth and sixth grade students integrate art into their capstone projects and add a robotics component, exposing students to STEM and STEAM careers. It is the perfect opportunity for young students to flex both their creative and scientific muscles and begin considering the many ways that STEM can be a part of their lives both now and in the future. n
