Lob and Learn is Coming to Atlanta BY SEBASTIAN NUNEZ, NET NEWS CONTRIBUTOR

Top ATP doubles player and crowd favorite, Nick Monroe, has had the opportunity to travel the world playing tennis and entertaining fans. So when the opportunity presents itself to help others through tennis, he is on board. The new Lob and Learn organization, for which he is now a partner and ambassador, is giving kids a chance to experience tennis and more. As the program comes to Atlanta, Monroe talks about that and his return to Atlanta for the Truist Atlanta Open, where he is a former champion. Lob and Learn is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide key opportunities for kids with sustainable tennis and education programs. By using education to promote tennis, the organization is exposing the sport to players of all backgrounds. Financial assistance with equipment, competition, and expenses is provided for kids based on their experience in the classroom. Being good competitors isn’t just the main mission of this program, as organizers put a lot of emphasis on developing the “three C’s”: Confidence, Character, and Connections. As a former junior player, this writer is excited to see how Lob and Learn will make Atlanta an even stronger tennis city by getting more kids to play and

compete. Using school as a motivator for tennis will only result in better tennis players and ultimately, better people. Make sure to keep an eye out for Kid’s Day on July 27, 2021 and the arrival of Lob and Learn. With Atlanta being widely regarded as one of the top tennis cities in the country, it is only fitting that a program as great as this should be here. That’s why Monroe, as a former champion, wants to bring it with him as he returns to try and gain a second doubles title here at the Truist Atlanta Open. With Kid’s Day always being a big success at the tournament, organizers look forward to combining it with Lob and Learn to have the best experience possible for kids at the tournament. Clubs from around the Atlanta area w ill be encouraged to bring junior players to be introduced to Lob and Learn where they will play, take in the experience, and watch world-class tennis. When asked about coming back to Atlanta, Monroe had nothing but positive things to say about the tournament and

city. First coming here at age 12 to watch World Team Tennis, he recalls being excited to come back and compete here himself. Tickets are on sale at atlantaopentennis.com. What’s new this year? A new stadium layout with special sections and more shade, safety precautions for players and fans, special nights for fans to enjoy, and more!

IMG Academy Renews Sponsorship Contract with Dunlop IMG Academy recently announced a multi-year renewal of its sponsorship contract with Dunlop. Since the start of the partnership in 2018, IMG Academy has supported Dunlop’s mission to develop the next generation of tennis players and grow the game at the grass roots level. Dunlop has utilized IMG Academy as a living laboratory for product testing and development since the start of their relationship. Notably, the now Official Ball of the ATP Tour, started as a ball on IMG Academy’s courts, where elite junior tennis players were a key part of the feedback-driven development process. Dunlop continues to provide IMG Academy with the latest innovations to support their research and create products for the next generation of players and pros alike. Dunlop’s on-campus presence extends to The Dunlop Innovation Center, which carries the entire Dunlop tennis line including premium racquets, luggage, string, grips, and balls.

Kai Nitsche, Dunlop VP and General Manager, said, “We are committed to the next generation of players and there is no better place to do that than at IMG Academy. IMG Academy has allowed us to innovate new, exciting products and has been an invaluable source of testing and feedback as we continuously try to improve all of our products.” This year, IMG Academy will expand its tennis facilities to include additional courts, as well as a stadium court. Dunlop plans to support the facility as it looks to host larger events and tournaments in the new space. Jimmy Arias, director of tennis at IMG Academy, said, “Dunlop has been an incredible sponsor these past three years and we are excited for the continued partnership as we expand our tennis facilities and scope. Our players have gained a real advantage being able to use Dunlop’s products, and our coaches have continued to grow, being on the forefront of tennis equipment innovation.”

ALTA’s Lamar Scott Claims PTR ACE Hero Award! We want to give a big shout out to our own Lamar Scott who has been recognized as a PTR Ace Hero. Scott has been with the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) for 20 years. He is also a certified PTR professional and a certified PPR pickleball coach. Scott will take over the helm of ALTA next year as the 2022 ALTA President. “It feels amazing to be recognized at this level, and I’m honored. I would not have been able to accomplish the things I have without PTR and ALTA, as well as other mentors who taught me to always give back with compassion,” says Scott. Scott began playing tennis as a junior and now uses the sport as a way to give back and mentor to young people in his community. In addition to his volunteer leadership position with ALTA, Scott serves on the board of the Atlanta Youth Tennis & Education Foundation (AYTEF) and works with kids through such programs as Serve and Connect. “I am truly grateful that I’ve been afforded the opportunity to be a part of — and give back to — the tennis community,” says Scott. He also lends a hand to Special Olympics and hosts an annual campaign during the holiday season to collect toys in support of Toys for Tots. In addition to this prestigious award, Scott has received high honors as the USTA Southern Tennis Professional of the Year and USTA Georgia Tennis Professional Tennis Association Community Outreach Award. Congratulations to ALTA’s own Lamar Scott!

U.S. Tennis Participation Surges in 2020, Adding 4 Million Players

This past February, the USTA announced that tennis participation increased by 22 percent in 2020, with 21.64 million people hitting the courts, according to recent data from the Physical Activity Council’s Participation (PAC) report produced by Sports Marketing Surveys. The survey and report monitor more than 120 different sports and activities participated in by Americans.

NETNEWS MAY/JUNE 2021

Of the more than 21 million Americans saying they played tennis last year, 6.78 million were new and returning players. The nearthree-million new players (2.96 million) was a 44-percent increase over new players in 2019. Additionally, the 3.82 million Americans who returned to the sport was a 40-percent increase over those returning to the sport in 2019. “We are thrilled that so many new and existing players came back to the sport, especially in what was such a challenging year for so many people,” said Mike Dowse, USTA CEO and executive director. “These new participation numbers are a testament to the hard work, passion, and commitment of a united industry that worked together to ensure that tennis not only survived but that it thrived. Even though we continue to face challenges, it’s evident that many people recognize tennis as the ideal social distancing sport, which puts it in a great position to continue to grow and allow people to stay active and social in a healthy and safe manner.”

In addition to the increase in participation highlighted in the PAC report, the Tennis Industry Association, the trade association that assists in monitoring the entire U.S. tennis industry, reported that racquet sales in the entry-level category have seen significant year-on-year growth of nearly 40 percent. A number of factors can be attributed to the positive tennis industry trends, including: Tennis is the ideal social-distancing sport. • The USTA, with input from the USTA Medical Advisory Group, established a series of recommendations and guidelines on how to play tennis safely for both players and facilities. • Additionally, a recent study, which analyzed the surface of balls used in various sports, showed that tennis balls used during normal play are unlikely to put players at risk of developing COVID-19. Tennis has many health benefits. • One of the largest sport-specific studies to date published in the July 2020 edition of the Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis, showed that those who play tennis have higher general, physical, social, and mental health scores than the general population. “We are excited to see these positive trends and such significant growth in our sport,” said Craig Morris USTA chief execu-

tive, Community Tennis. “We are energized to continue putting forward key industry partnerships and quality programming to ensure new and existing players of all ages and abilities have the best experience playing the sport for a lifetime.” In order to capitalize on the momentum surrounding participation, the USTA collaborated with leading manufacturers and mass retailers to include a “Net Generation” hangtag on over 400,000 youth racquets sold by various mass, sporting goods, and tennis retailers across the U.S. Beginning in early second quarter, the hangtags will include information about Net Generation, the official youth tennis brand of the USTA, via a QR code announcing local play opportunities and access to the free youth USTA membership, all aimed at making it easier for kids to get into the game. The USTA will continue to provide resources to certified providers and facilities across the country to ensure new and existing tennis players have access to programming that is safe and fun. Each year, the Physical Activity Council conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation, and leisure activity participation in the nation. The PAC is made up of eight of the leading sports and manufacturer associations that are dedicated to growing participation in their respective sports and activities. For more information on USTA programming, providers and how to play tennis safely, please visit USTA.com.

An email is then generated and sent to the team with the lineup details. Changing a lineup player, date and/or time after the original publishing requires that the lineup be republished, and that also results in an email being sent to the team highlighting the changes. From the point the published lineup is sent out, those in the lineup can click a button to “Accept or Decline” their place in the lineup from the email, or otherwise confirm on the website. Confirmed players are immediately “unconfirmed” when a team leader makes a lineup change that affects them directly. When the new lineup is republished, those players who have a change will need to confirm again. All others in the lineup will get a notice telling them of their current status with the ability to change their reply if needed.

Babolat to Help Build Racquet Sports Players Laboratory Two French companies, Babolat, and HumanFab, sports science expert in human engineering, announced a joint collaboration earlier this year to create and develop a one-of-kind laboratory focused on the study of “the human racquet sports player.” Merging their expertise, the two companies will scientifically explore and improve knowledge of players through the application of biomechanics to racquet sports. “Today, our equipment innovations spring from an empirical understanding of players and a keen observation of the game. Our research is conducted on the court, and with our global network of players — from clubs to the highest levels of competition. By adopting a new scientific approach, we will deepen our know-how and further define our expertise, resulting in a more precise offer response,” says Eric Babolat, president of Babolat. A racquet sports laboratory, the collaboration between Babolat and HumanFab focuses on the human factor to advance

knowledge so that product innovation will perfectly suit players’ needs, regardless of age or level, helping them discover their potential and optimize performance. “This is an ambitious and exciting project. Offering a player-centered approach with 360-degree services combining product development, sports medicine support, and training is extremely innovative,” adds Jean-Bernard Fabre, CEO and founder of HumanFab. “With complementary expertise, our ambition is to become the global scientific standard for biomechanics in racquet sports.” The first phase of the collaboration begins with the construction of a nearly 27,000-square-foot Racquet Sports Players Laboratory (Laboratoire des Sports de Raquettes) in Aix-enProvence, France, which includes a 3.0 tennis court among other features.

Babolat Releases Signature Nadal Racquet

It turned heads throughout the French Open last September, especially when the Spanish champion celebrated his 20th Grand Slam victory by waving it in the air. The Babolat Pure Aero Rafa, Rafael Nadal’s first signature racquet (and its matching bag) are now on sale. The Pure Aero Rafa racquet was developed in collaboration with the player by Babolat, which has been supplying him with equipment since the start of his tennis career. Its exclusive new graphic design matches the player’s personality and distinctive gameplay. Nadal chose a combination of warm, explosive colors with dominant tones of yellow, purple, and orange. The name of the player, RAFA, in capitals, and the model, Pure Aero, stand out in purple letters on the throat. “I like powerful, bright colors, and I like this racquet; it’s definitely me. We worked with Babolat to make it happen. And I’m really pleased with it. It’s important to feel good on court. I really hope players enjoy it,” Nadal said. And since there’s only one “Rafa,” he’s also the only professional player on the circuit to use the racquet, giving fans a unique opportunity to feel even closer to their favorite champion. The specs of the Pure Aero Rafa are the same as the regular Pure Aero. Invented in 2005 by Babolat to support Nadal and players from his professional team in their quest to achieve the ultimate performance, the Aero is the leading powerful racquet specially adapted for extreme lift, which in addition to the world’s first aerodynamic frame, supports offensive gameplay and pushes opponents behind the baseline. One Pure Aero racquet is sold every two minutes around the world, Babolat reports. This year promises even more excitement for Nadal as he takes on the sizeable challenge of securing his record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title. “Rafa’s passion, commitment, and perseverance are beyond compare,” says Antoine Ballon, tennis sport director at Babolat.” He constantly rewrites tennis history, and he’s just inches away from an incredible record. To mark 20 years of their historic partnership, Babolat wanted to create a special racquet that highlights the brand’s commitment to this exceptional player and allows fans around the world to support his quest to achieve the ultimate performance.” 28

Game, Set, Match! The Perfect Partnership between ALTA and Net News BY EMMY POWELL, NET NEWS EDITOR

F Net News Publisher John Hanna (left) and New South Publishing President Larry Lebovitz.

There have only been four ALTA Net News Editors. They are: John Williams Ken Bomar Suzanne Dent Emmy Powell

1995

New South Publishing Vice President John Hanna gives credit for the current magazine format to Patricia Jensen, who is best known for being the mother of former professional players Murphy and Luke Jensen. She also has twin daughters, Rebecca and Rachel, who played on the WTA tour. Hanna recalls a great story when Jensen was at the Riverside Club in Sandy Springs where the girls were taking tennis lessons. New South Publishing President Larry Lebovitz also took his kids to the same club. Jensen was reading her Net News while the kids were drilling and literally said to Lebovitz, “Larry, you’re in the printing business. Why does ALTA do this crappy newspaper instead of a nice magazine?” The magazine was born! John Williams served as the original Net News editor until 2006. He was the man who wrote the book, “ALTA—Its History, Humor & Hors D’oeuvres.” It includes details of the formation of

rom the thrill of victory to that first-ever big plate, some of the great moments of ALTA league play have been captured through various ALTA publications. The evolution of spreading the ALTA word began as an 8 ½ X 11 newsletter (folded and stapled) that was mailed to the membership in the early 1970’s. As you can see from these various photos, Net News was later produced as a newspaper tabloid and stayed in that format a little over a decade until the first issue of the magazine was published in 1992. Back then, the ALTA leadership wanted to develop a magazine because of the concern of the messy newsprint. The idea was to keep it from simply being thrown out and instead have it become more of a coffee table piece in the homes of ALTA members. Today, it is still the only tangible part of ALTA that members receive directly in their mailbox every two months.

have been big changes in the print and digital versions throughout the years, and there was a time when he felt like an artwork collector as he used to have to drive across Atlanta and physically pick up the ads. “The evolution has been a lot of fun to be a part of, and we are all very proud to know that Net News is now truly the gold standard in the world of tennis magazine publishing,” said Hanna. It is a match made in heaven as Net News goes hand in hand with the gold standard of 50 years of ALTA league play.

play. New South Publishing took over the agreement to produce the magazine in 1991 after meeting with ALTA President Kathy LeFort. The publishing team worked with President Harriet Lynch to produce the first issue, the May/June issue of Net News in 1992. Even as a kid, Hanna recalls reading the newsprint edition of Net News since his friends could be featured, and he liked to study the league standings in black and white. Back then, only 30-percent of the City Champions were featured. Today, all City Champions are listed in the magazine. Hanna says there

ALTA in 1934 and the evolution of how league play began in 1971. Lebovitz was instrumental in helping Williams navigate through the book publishing world, while Hanna wrote the forward in the book. Throughout the years, Hanna, an ALTA member since 1980, proudly refers to ALTA as “a party where a tennis match breaks out.” In the book, he writes “Charlie Cox and associates had a remarkable vision when they laid the initial framework, and Williams has recounted all of it for perpetuity.” ALTA is the largest local tennis league in the world, and many national and local tennis organizations still are trying to recreate the ALTA formula for success. Anyone who has been around Atlanta tennis for any length of time knows that Hanna is one of our city’s biggest tennis ambassadors. In addition to being the publisher of Net News, he serves as the advertising director for Racquet Sports Industry Magazine and is a partner in Baseline Network, which is a digital advertising business for tennis websites. He also is the Tennis Channel Advertising Consultant for the tennis manufacturers who are featured throughout Tennis Channel, Tennis Magazine, and Tennis.com. ‘The Hermanator,’ Herman Tannenbaum A salute to one of our oldest living ALTA members BY AMY BERGIN, NET NEWS CONTRIBUTOR

H

Tannenbaum in 1943. Army B-24 Bomber navigator.

38

NETNEWS MAY/JUNE 2021

erman Tannenbaum was born on July 26, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York during times when tennis was quite a luxury. This was the same year a new tennis stadium that you might have heard of, Centre Court at Wimbledon, first opened. Tannenbaum’s curiosity with the sport began in his late teens, when he started following tennis professional Vic Seixas, who at that time (from the 1940s through the 1960s), was “the face of American tennis.” It was Seixas’ Jewish heritage, mental and physical discipline, tenacity, and service in the Army that deeply inspired Tannenbaum. However, playing the sport would have to wait since Tannenbaum was called up to serve in the war in 1943 when he was only 21 years old. He became an Army B-24 Bomber navigator, which meant sit ting behind t he co-pilot and telling him where to go as well as explaining how much fuel was left and what was expected from the weather. He served 3 ½ years of combat duty, executing low-altitude bombings overseas, mostly in China. After the war ended, Tannenbaum arrived safely home to Brooklyn where a big welcome party lovingly organized by his sister was waiting for him. It was on this day

that he met the true love of his life, Lorraine Pine. He and Lorraine married on Mar. 9, 1947. They later had two sons, and moved to Miami, Florida in 1957. There, Tannenbaum and his father-in-law started a business called Smiling Jacks Auto Parts, and this is when Tannenbaum, in his mid-forties, decided it was finally time to start playing tennis. A few friends were playing at Flamingo Beach, and the North Miami Beach Tennis Club had clay courts where residents could purchase an annual season pass for $400 (about $836 in today’s dollars). To him, this seemed like a lot of money, but Tannenbaum wanted to play so he joined a team. Over the years, he developed his game on these well-known clay courts that sit next to The Ancient Spanish Monastery. Eventually, it became the notable place where Nick Bollettieri started his famed tennis coaching career. Fast forward to the year 2000, and the Tannenbaums had moved to Atlanta and bought a house in Bridle Ridge, a fairly new subdivision with tennis courts in Forsyth County. It took a few years to get familiar with the neighborhood. In 2004, at the age of 77, an age when playing competitive tennis winds down for most, Tannenbaum joined his first ALTA team. It was a C5 mixed doubles team, captained by Ashley Cavender. “He was my tennis partner for several years and people were always in awe of him,” Cavender said. “Herman does not like to lose, and he never makes any excuses.” She added that first and foremost, he is an unbelievable sportsman, always supportive, helpful and positive, even to their opponents. She says the humanity of him towards every human being

is remarkable. “When you talk to him, you know you matter. His mind is so sharp. It’s true that age is just a number.” Tannenbaum went on to join a men’s league team and became a force to reckon with. In 2011, he won his first and only ALTA Men’s League City Championship. “We nicknamed him ‘the Hermanator’ because of his strength and resilience on and off the court,” said his teammate Mark Fuglsang. “He embraces his age and makes the most of every day. He is a true old-school WWII gentleman.” Tannenbaum recalls a match with teammate Brent Morgan in which they won in straight sets. He overheard the opponents as they exited the courts saying, “that old guy with the beard … he’s pretty good.” Tannenbaum never revealed to them that he was 90 years old because he thought they would have passed out! ALTA is commonly referred to as a family. This was especially true when Tannenbaum’s friends from ALTA rallied around him when his wife’s health began to decline. She passed away in 2011. The Tannenbaums were married for an amazing 64 years, and Lorraine was the center of his life. His teammates jumped into action, taking him meals and running errands, doing whatever it took to help Herman through that extremely difficult time. They have truly been his lifeline. Tannenbaum recalls how all of his teammates came to his wife’s funeral. He was shocked how the room was filled his tennis friends and neighbors paying their respects. In the years following, these same people organized a surprise 95th birthday party at the neighborhood clubhouse. The room was packed with adults and children from the neighborhood, along with his sons and their families who came from out of town to pay tribute to a man who means so much to so many people. Teammate Mike Matthews decided to something extraordinary and organized a special day for Tannenbaum. “I asked Herman if he ever had flown on a B-17 Bomber. He said ‘No, only on a B-24.’ I asked would he go up with me if I coordinated,” Matthews said. “In true Herman fashion, he smiled and replied, ‘Hell yeah, I’ll go!’” On the

Tannenbaum and wife Lorraine

day of the flight, he told Tannenbaum he did not have to go up if he did not feel like it. Tannenbaum’s response resonated with Matthews, even to this day. “Herman said if he had committed to something, he would not let his brothers down. True to his words, he went flying that day,” Matthews recalled. Even though Tannenbaum had to reluctantly retire from playing tennis at the ripe old age of 96 in 2018, his passion and love of the sport and his teams continues. He even kept up his ALTA membership through 2020. Every weekend, you will find him up at the Bridle Ridge courts cheering on his teammates. Fuglsang shares, “No matter what the weather — rain, shine, or freezing cold — we can count on Herman being in the pavilion. He is always upbeat and encouraging, especially if you lose. He always lets you know he believes in you.” Te a m m a t e S h aw n Maschmeier adds, “Herman has that special ability to see the positive side of everything. Be it politics, the virus, or the weather.” Tannenbaum reflects, “Tennis has made me aware of friendship and respect, and has contributed to me being here and enjoying life.” Marilyn Cameron, who played Herman’s final tennis match with him before he retired says, “Herman is the epitome of the statement that tennis is a life sport. He never gives up, he just keeps going, and he is a blessing to everyone who knows him.”

Happy 99th Birthday Herman! We proudly salute you and thank you for your service to our country, investment in the lives of others, and your contributions to tennis. Play on!

The Senior Day Leagues are played in the spring and fall; the two seasons of the year known for more comfortable, less extreme temperatures. Senior Day Women’s matches are played on Tuesday mornings, and Senior Day Men’s matches are played on Wednesday mornings. I think that it is nice to have a structured playing opportunity that is not always in the evening or on the weekend. Matches, which include three lines of doubles for this league, begin at 10:00 a.m., which is a super time to start. Home teams often offer three courts, so all lines start at the same time. As such, matches usually are completed before 1:00 p.m., so you have the rest of the day to enjoy other activities. You must be 55,

or turn 55 during the calendar year, to be eligible to play on a Senior Day League team. Playing levels include AA, A, B, and C, ensuring a competitive experience for all players, regardless of ability. The playing season is structured like other ALTA leagues, with seven weeks of regular play, followed by playoffs and City Finals for teams that advance to the postseason. For the spring season in 2021, there are 90 men’s teams, and the total player count is 1,169. The player count for the women’s teams for spring 2021 is 3,051 women who are playing on 244 teams. You may want to start a new team, as this is the only adult league where you can form a new team with only eight players. This is a great way to spend time with your friends and to meet new friends, as you enjoy playing tennis with enthusiasm, respect, and happiness.

021 started off looking a lot like 2020, but thankfully, we are seeing an increased number of ALTA members back on the courts. Our favorite facilities are also beginning to loosen restrictions on the total number of participants allowed at events. With these much-welcomed improvements, we are planning to hold the summer and fall ALTA Mixers. These mixers are fun because you get to play three, eight-game, no-ad sets with different opponents. They will be close to your level of play (e.g., B3’s will be playing against other high B players and B7’s will be playing against other low B players).

Talk to your partners now and mark your calendars. We are looking forward to seeing old and new friends out for a great day of tennis and sunny, warm weather. The next Mixed Doubles Mixer will be on Sunday, August 8 and the Senior Mixed Doubles Mixer will be held on Sunday, November 7. These are popular events and space is limited, so sign-up as soon as you receive an email from ALTA letting you know that registration is open. If you have any questions, contact me at specialprogramsvp@altatennis.org.

ennis is a game that requires cooperation and courtesy. From the warm-up to the handshake (or racket bump), it can be exhilarating, but intense, and good sportsmanship makes for a fun day on the court whether you win or lose the match. ALTA encourages good sportsmanship. We love to hear stories from our members about teams that went above and beyond so that matches could be played and be enjoyed by all players. Over the last several years, I have received a number complaints about issues and problems that occur during matches, but when I hear about all the good that happens, it reminds me why I love this game and why I volunteer with ALTA. And the good far outweighs the bad. Lifelong friendships and friendly rivalries have occurred because of ALTA tennis. Many of us moved into the Atlanta area and looked for a local or neighborhood team in an effort to make new friends and experience more of our communities. The Thursday Women’s League is filled with wonderful ladies who have the opportunity to get out on the courts during the week and have some friendly competition. Billie Jean King once said,

NETNEWS MAY/JUNE 2021

“A lot of sports, over the years, become a game. If you are into tennis, it becomes part of your lifestyle.” That rings so true for our ALTA membership. Every season, we give out sportsmanship awards to teams that have gone above and beyond and are examples of stellar cooperation or helpfulness during the season. We have now made it even easier to nominate teams for this special award! If you go to the ALTA website, and look under the Documents tab, you will find the Sportsmanship Award Nomination Form, which you can fill out online. The document has a link to the First VPs email for no-fuss submission. I encourage you all to look for opportunities this season to see all the good on the courts around you, and nominate a team who has shown considerable kindness and goodwill toward you or your team! Arthur Ashe once said, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” We should all make an effort to enjoy the journey each week on the courts and carry forward the lessons that good sportsmanship teaches us about our lives on and off the courts.

Terrific Tennis Travels BY MITCH FALKIN, MEN’S LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT

love playing tennis. I also love watching tennis; my teammates’ matches, junior matches, singles or doubles, and pro matches on TV. But the pinnacle of watching tennis has to be “live” at a really good professional match. During the past year, with travel being a virtual no-go, I have come up with a simple, new bucket-list plan: Go to great places and watch pro tennis. Here are eight tournaments that check all the boxes — high-level tournaments, great cities, a variety of locations, and their next scheduled dates: Truist Atlanta Open, Jul. 24-Aug. 1, 2021, Atlantic Station. Get a discount through your ALTA membership and enjoy our hometown’s professional tournament. Make sure you stop by the ALTA tent to say hello. Plus, it’s fun to watch John Isner blast his serves here. Delray Beach Open, Feb. 11-20, 2022, Delray Beach, Florida. Delray Beach is located between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton on Florida’s east coast, and the tennis center is within walking distance to the beach. A lovely spot to visit in February. US Open, Aug. 30-Sept. 12, 2021, New York City. Grandaddy of the hardcourt circuit, it doesn’t get any bigger than this for tennis in the United States. Who can resist a trip to the Big Apple for shopping, eating, and people watching? Indian Wells Masters, Mar. 11-21, 2021, Indian Wells, California. Due to COVID-19, this year’s tournament will not be held on those dates and has been postponed but not cancelled. If it does happen this year, this desert location is fantastic, right near Palm Springs, with lots to do. If you also enjoy golf, this trip will be a double-bonus with plenty of great courses to play. Also, the tournament is within striking distance of Mt. San Jacinto and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which offers some great hiking.

Wimbledon, Jun. 28-Jul. 11, 2021, London, England. It’s the oldest and most prestigious tournament in the world. The pomp and traditions are alive and well here, and if you have to pick one Grand Slam, this might be the one. There is a lot to do in London, so you can work the tournament into an even longer vacation. French Open, May 23-Jun. 6, 2021, Paris, France. It’s the quintessential clay tournament in one of the world’s most beloved cities. I’d like to get to this one before Rafael Nadal retires, since this tournament seems to belong to him. Plus, who wouldn’t want to watch tennis at the famed Roland-Garros Stadium? Monte-Carlo Masters, Apr. 11-17, 2022, Monaco. This probably is the most picturesque location, on the French Riviera overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Google this one just for the photos alone; they are spectacular. And for gamblers, the world-famous Casino de Monte-Carlo is nearby. Australian Open, Jan. 17-30, 2022, Melbourne, Australia. This would be a great winter vacation, and Melbourne is right on the ocean. I’d be tempted to make this trip an extended one, since Australia is so big and far away. This would be the perfect start to 2022! I must admit, I have a long way to go to complete the entire tour. So far, I have been to the Truist Atlanta Open and have watched my daughter play as a junior at Delray Beach and Indian Wells. That leaves seven of the pro tournaments for me to cover. I believe several years of planning and enjoyment lie ahead for me. After I finish all of these great trips, I definitely will find more tennis to watch and enjoy, whether it is around the corner or across the globe. Now back to reality. Good luck to everyone in your ALTA matches, and I look forward to seeing you out on the courts! MAY/JUNE 2021 NETNEWS

pring season in Atlanta is just beautiful. There is nothing better to see than the tennis courts full of excited ladies, dressed in colorful clothes, enjoying new and old friendships while taking in the thrill of victory or graciously conceding a loss. Our Sunday Women’s League runs from the start of spring in March to the middle of May. A wonderful time starts on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when more than 1,000 teams across the city arrive at their courts for an afternoon of tennis, physical fitness, and recreation. COVID-19 certainly threw a reset on us. Our favorite routines are no longer easy to accomplish. ALTA, determined to stand up to the virus, took a positive approach and was able to get members back on the courts in the safest way possible. ALTA had to put some guidelines in place. While some players really liked the changes, some did not. As we look into our crystal ball, and our lives return to a new normal, what will stay? What will go? Maybe we do not exchange balls at the end of the match. Maybe the good handshake will be back. Maybe we will not set up the wonderful assortment of refreshments to share. Maybe we will play a complete third set again. Whatever the case may be, one thing we can be sure of is that there will be tennis, and there will be fun. To have fun matches, of course, we all need to exemplify good

sportsmanship. Treating players with respect, having a positive attitude, and giving your best effort will lead to a pleasant experience, no matter who wins. ALTA encourages nominations for good sportsmanship awards that are reviewed seasonally. You might even see one of our unique “Sportsmanship Winner” bag tags. Be sure to congratulate these players for a job well done. It is easy to locate the nomination form on the ALTA website under ALTA Documents. All you have to do is complete the form and submit it to firstvp@altatennis.org. So, how much fun can you have? Following the ALTA Adult rules, a member can play in more than one league in each season, but not on more than one team in the same league (for example: you cannot be on two Sunday Women’s rosters in the same season, but you can play on a Thursday Women’s team and Sunday Women’s team in the same season). Ladies can play on a variety of teams. In addition to the Sunday Women’s League, ALTA offers a Thursday Women’s League, and both are open to women (18+). ALTA also has a summer Senior Women’s League (45+), as well as a Senior Day Women’s League (55+) in the spring and fall. Also available are Run ‘N Roll and Wheelchair Leagues. So, ladies, do not miss out on all the opportunities available to you! See you on the courts!

Teaching More Than Tennis And you thought ALTA was just a tennis program! BY TAMMI COPELLI, JUNIOR LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT

A

s our junior spring season comes to an end, it is always nice to reflect on what we learned and recognize things for which we are grateful. Sometimes, people are brought into our lives who have a great impact on us, encouraging us to reach our fullest potential. Many times, this person enters our lives as a coach. ALTA’s junior tennis program nicely sets up this opportunity for our junior players. I’ve been a volunteer for the ALTA Junior League for 15 years and have seen this impact happen over and over. This life-changing opportunity that ALTA provides is one of the many reasons I have stayed as a volunteer, long after my children have aged out of the junior program. As VP, I have the opportunity to speak to our youth tennis coaches. Many not only coach our teams, but also organize and manage these teams. Each and every one of them has an amazing ability to teach tennis while somehow turning that into learning life skills, all while being outside and having fun. Thus, I thought I’d highlight some of our awesome coaches who were instrumental in making our season great. When asked what junior tennis means to them, this is what they told me: Bill DeMartini, Crooked Creek Tennis: Junior tennis provides an incredible opportunity for kids to build self-confidence, learn how to handle their emotions, how to problem solve, how to interact socially with peers and adults/teachers, as well as staying physically fit and learning the building blocks of a sport that can be enjoyed for their entire lives. I am grateful that my job allows me to be a part of the growth process of so many different kids. Desmond McLennon, Wellington Tennis: Tennis is truly the sport of a lifetime. When you start tennis at a young age, you learn so many life lessons. This goes beyond winning or learn-

ing. ALTA junior tennis teaches dedication, problem solving, and working with others to achieve goals. This all helps to foster sportsmanship and a strong component to loving and serving the community throughout the whole region. Jim Richards, Smoke Rise Country Club: There is more to tennis than just perfecting techniques. The Junior Leagues provide that essential, healthy balance between skill development and play, along with many psychological and motivational benefits. Having coached across America and in Europe, there is no question that it is hard to imagine a better cornerstone for junior development than the ALTA Junior Leagues. Jonathan Lockeretz, Harrison Tennis Center: It is rewarding to teach the sport, which has been such a huge part of my life, to kids of all ages and levels. Tennis teaches them life lessons in sportsmanship, self-esteem, and confidence, as well as providing a positive social experience. Randy Hancock, Harrison Tennis Center: For me, teaching juniors to play tennis has been more than just a job. It has been a way of life. I realized years ago that the lessons I teach on court transcend well beyond the tennis court. I enjoy teaching as much now as when I started years ago. I’d like to give a big thank you to ALL of the coaches who participate in the ALTA Junior Leagues. Thank you for teaching, motivating, inspiring, encouraging, and helping our kids learn and enjoy a sport they can participate in for many years to come. Our program would not be as successful without your commitment and your dedication. You’ve somehow made ALTA a life-coaching course cleverly disguised as a tennis program. We are better because of you, and our juniors are better because of you. Thank you for being part of our ALTA team. MAY/JUNE 2021 NETNEWS

GOOD QUESTION

INTERRUPTION FROM ADJOINING COURT During a doubles match, our opponents pointed out that a first serve should be given when the server has to retrieve a ball that bounced or rolled onto their court between serves. What is the rule when a ball from an adjoining court interrupts the flow between serves? Does the server get two serves? Lamar Scott, First Vice President According to USTA’s “The Code” (#30), “….when there is a delay between the first and second serve, the server gets two serves if the delay was caused by the receiver or if there was outside interference.” The ruling further states that “the time it takes to clear a ball that comes onto the court between the first and second serves is not considered sufficient time to warrant the server receiving two serves unless this time is so prolonged as to constitute an interruption. The receiver is the judge of whether the delay insufficiently prolonged to justify giving the server two serves.” In this case, because a ball from an adjacent court interrupted play between serves, the server is entitled to two serves, but the receiver makes the call.

During a recent mixed doubles match, my partner was returning a ball which then hit a bird flying over the court. Our opponents said that we lose the point. Were they correct? Tammi Copelli, Junior Leagues Vice President Thankfully, the bird was ok, but in this case, the bird is considered a hindrance. According to “Friend of Court” (Part 26), the point shall be replayed if a player is hindered in playing the point by either an unintentional act of the opponent(s), or something outside the player’s own control (not including a permanent fixture).

THROWING YOUR RACQUET During a point, a player throws his racquet towards a ball in play that is passing him, and the racquet strings hit the ball, which goes back over to the opponent’s side as a drop shot winner. That opponent argues that this is not a legal shot and he should get the point. Is he correct? Mitch Falkin, Men’s League Vice President “ITF Rules of Tennis” (Rule 24, Part J) states that “the point is lost if the ball in play touches the racket when 46

NETNEWS MAY/JUNE 2021

the player is not holding it.” Therefore, in this case, the opponent was correct and should be awarded the point.

FILLING A VACANCY After the scorecard has been exchanged between teams, a line 2 player had not arrived at the court by the default time. Can the captain of that team replace the player that has not shown up to play line 2 with someone else already on that scorecard? Cameron Turner, Mixed Doubles League Vice President A captain is permitted to make adjustments to the scorecard as long as the match has not begun involving any of the players being changed. According to the General Rules for Adult Leagues, IV. Dual Meets, Part D, “players may not be moved downward on the scorecard/lineup. Players listed on a scorecard/lineup may be moved upward to fill a vacancy created by players absent or injured during warm up.”

DEFAULT VS RAINOUT Prior to a recent match, I was informed by the opposing captain that they would be defaulting Line 5. It started raining while Line 1-3 were playing on match day. Do we have to schedule someone to play the Line 5 match in the rainout, or do we still win that point? Keri Beck, Thursday Women’s League Vice President In the ALTA General Rules, the definition of a default is the loss of a match or matches by failing to be present for play within 20 mins after the scheduled starting time. However, on Page 36 of the Adult Captain’s Handbook, under “Inclement Weather,” Item 4 (Announced Default) states that “if a team announced it would default a position or positions before the scheduled dual meet, then those matches may now be played. If, however, the default time for the position(s) had passed before the weather delay, then the default(s) stands.

DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT … ? If you’ve ever had a situation occur in a match where no one on the court knew the rule that applied, send your inquiry to Good Question. ALTA officials answer questions in each issue of Net News and yours could be chosen next. Submit your question, along with your name, league, team name and level to altaeditor@altatennis.org.

Finding Your Full Potential

T

ennis awesome, super fans! It seems like we are pulling out a massive, five-setter over the last year. Like any tough match, there have been ups and downs, but the world kept chipping away. It’s nice to be able to even think of beating this virus once and for all. Tennis participation was up 26 percent in 2020 because of natural social distancing, but I hope our follow-through keeps those new players in the game. Most tennis players k now their strengths and weaknesses. Even at the basic level, players figure out what shots stay in and the shots that can’t hit water from a boat. It’s so important in competition to know what shots are your money maker.

48

NETNEWS MAY/JUNE 2021

It also is critical to learn as much as you can about your opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. I see so many matches where people play right into their opponent’s strengths. Being aware of the situation, especially under pressure. Keeping a clear mind can win more pressure points than you may think. Players who tell me they are overwhelmingly nervous or are thinking too much while on the court never seem to find true potential. My response is that I need you to think constantly on the court. Make proper adjustments to the ever-changing situations, but make sure you are thinking of the right things. Be the problem solver you were as a student during a test. Break

down the problem and find solutions. This way, you are thinking of the proper methods of finding your full potential. I am going to share something that is going to come off extremely arrogant, but I promise I don’t mean it that way. I lost critical matches from being over-confident. I never thought I was going to lose. I had put in all the prep work and had sound, thoughtful game plans so I always trusted that my training prepared me to go into the arena with confidence. I air-balled a perfect season in college and two “slam” mixed doubles finals that I was absolutely sure I was going to win. Over-confidence was my greatest weakness on the court. I always knew the odds if I was playing Roger Federer or Roger Rabbit, but my parents trained all of us in the family a strong confident streak that helped us win more than we lost. Sometimes it’s a good thing to have some butterflies and nerves. It keeps you focused and locked into the battle. As long as those nerves don’t overwhelm your decision-making during the competition, that little nervous edge can help you. Now if you are like me and lose from over-confidence, well, stop high-fiving the fans and hitting “hot dog shots” and go win the match! My other massive weakness is that I am a total gear geek. I absolutely have to give up buying the latest and greatest gear on the market. Personally, I am a shoe man. The new shoes these days are so cool! I’m a sucker for a solid clay court bottom during the summer season and anything that Federer wears. The Importance of Communication in Doubles BY CHELSEA VEA, TEACHING PRO, UNIVERSAL TENNIS ACADEMY-BLACKBURN PARK

or most tennis-playing adults in Atlanta, doubles is a way of life. Unfortunately, with busy schedules and jobs, most players are not able to commit to a regular practice schedule on the court. It takes weeks or even months of repetition to learn different types of shots and to solidify technique. This creates a frustrating reality for those who compete with their ALTA or USTA teams throughout the year. People are constantly asking me what they can do to improve their game to make the biggest impact in their matches with a limited practice schedule. I believe there is one major area of improvement that most players can achieve: Learn how to communicate and move with your doubles partner. Rather than hitting a million forehands fed from a ball machine, or dragging bas-

kets across the court to practice serves, learning to share your game plan with your partner during the point is perhaps the most effective way to work toward an elevated level of play. court. Instead, by learning how to move synchronously with a partner, doubles players can cover larger portions of the court, putting pressure on the opposing team and (hopefully) forcing them to make errors. The primary goal for a strong doubles team should be to learn how to close off points at the net. Either through poaching or moving together to the net, the best teams are usually those who are most comfortable leaving the baseline to take advantage of offensive opportunities. When a team maintains an aggressive position at the net, their opponents are more likely to make mistakes. Entry-level ALTA and USTA teams contain many players who feel more comfortable at the baseline because it creates more time to prepare their groundstrokes. If an opponent is willing to take advantage of this opportunity and come to the net first, they can eliminate that extra time. Another important goal when approaching the net is to cover the largest amount of court possible, so partners should always be staggered at the net. The player positioned deeper in the court is responsible for covering the lob and setting up their partner to poach, while the player closer to the net should be more tactically aggressive, ending the point with the volley. It is vital that each partner understands their role and constantly communicates: “Yours. Mine. Back. I’ve got it!” These methods help new teams compete effectively. If a doubles team consistently communicates as they execute each point, trust will form between the players, allowing them to work together with their movements and share an understanding of the match’s strategy.

n his book, “The Bottom of the Pool,” Andy Andrews writes about playing a game your opponents don’t even know is being played. Wouldn’t it be great if you went into a tennis match with a tool that your opponent didn’t even know existed or had complete disregard for its importance? It would be like one builder with a hammer and the other with a nail gun! But how deep do we really go when strategizing for a tennis match? There are so many opportunities beyond simply knowing how to hit the ball and where to hit it. Understanding the “game within the game” can lend you a sizeable advantage over your competition. Always know where the sun sits. Depending on the time of day, one side of the net could be glaring right into the sun. When your opponents are on that side, hit a lot of lobs. When you’re on the sunny side, try to keep the ball low to avoid having to look up and be blinded. Did you know that no tennis court is flat? They are all pitched for drainage purposes. running uphill to retrieve it. Add that with the tactic from the previous paragraph and you literally could beat someone because you made them stare into the sun and run uphill. Let’s continue with these high-side and low-side tactics. On the high side, it’s much easier to come to the net as you’ll be running downhill. If you like to serve and volley like me, did you ever notice one side of the net seemed easier than the other? You also can serve more aggressively on the high side, for essentially the same reason, plus you are a bit more above the net. When on the low-side baseline, you are hitting uphill so put more arc on your groundstrokes to avoid net errors. More examples could fill the page, and while they may seem utterly meaningless compared to the forehand you’re trying to perfect, multiply these tactics over the course of match and it could make a substantial difference. You may have had a coach tell you that no error is the same; hitting the ball into the net is worse than hitting it out. On the surface, it is because if you just get the ball over the net you have somewhat of a chance that gravity will pull it into the 39’ X 36’ (doubles) space that is your opponent’s court. And, if your opponent is at the net, you have a good chance they will “flag it,” meaning to strike a ball that possibly was headed out of bounds. But let’s dive deeper, to the “bottom of the pool.” In a match, you play with just three balls and players must retrieve those balls after each point. If you hit the ball into the net, you are punished with that “walk of shame” to pick it up, magnifying negative thought and further distracting you from moving on to the next point. Now, hit the ball over the net but out of bounds, and your opponent has to retrieve the ball. You lost the point, but made your opponent clean up your mess! Unless that was match point, you can use this time to refocus for the next point and hopefully get a pep talk from your partner. The next match you play, think about how many times you gather the balls between points versus your opponents. The team that has to pick up balls the least, typically wins. Take time to really think about the “game within the game,” all the tools that can be used to your advantage (within the rules, of course). As Andrews repeats time and again in his book, “We are doing the best that we can, but are we doing the best that can be done?”

Recovery as a category is one of the most overlooked practices for the tennis athlete that contribute not only to a happy and healthy life, both physically and mentally, but also to longevity and injury prevention which can plague even the most physically fit among us. However, with so many massage gun products on the market — and with more coming out every day — it can be confusing to determine which devices and what types of treatment will provide the most benefit and support your specific recovery goals. It’s important to have as much information as possible when deciding what tools to use in your routine. We’ll take a look at percussive therapy massage guns compared to vibration therapy massage guns and break down the science to show you why percussive therapy massage gun devices are more effective and more beneficial to your recovery. What is vibration therapy? Vibration therapy is the application of vibration by a device to either the whole body or a localized part. For whole-body vibration therapy, the user typically stands on a platform device that vibrates. In localized therapy, a hand-held device sends vibrations through the area of the body in need of treatment. Vibration therapy massage guns make contact with the skin and feels good on the surface of the body, creating a “global” experience as opposed to the more targeted treatment percussive therapy delivers. Benefits of vibration therapy can include alleviating stress and a moderate increase in blood flow. Vibration therapy stimulates the muscles, causing them to contract and relax involuntarily. Vibration therapy can soothe the body from some pain and be a generally pleasant experience while providing some massage-like benefits to the user. The primary function is the contraction and release of muscles, which uses the body’s biomechanics to produce results.

What is percussive therapy? Percussive therapy functions similarly to vibration therapy in that it applies force to the body part being treated. One significant difference between the two is that percussive therapy reaches 60-percent deeper into the muscle than consumer-grade vibration massagers, producing deeper massage-like benefits. Percussive therapy targets treatment areas by reaching deep enough into the muscle to increase the amount of blood flow and oxygen needed for efficient treatment and recovery. Also, because percussive therapy devices touch the body and come off of it multiple times per second, the brain does not acclimate to the stimulation, making the therapy more effective. Think of it as the difference between Swedish massage and a targeted deep-tissue massage. In this growing and crowded space, it’s important to know that not all devices are created equally. Specifically, in order to achieve true percussive therapy, devices must have: • Amplitude (depth) - 16 mm amplitudes allow devices to treat deep within the muscle to release tension. • Frequency (speed) - 2,400 percussion per minute (40 per second) speed allows devices to override the pain signals to your brain, making the treatment experience more comfortable than manual muscle therapy. • Torque (no-stall force) - Devices that can withstand up to an additional 60 pounds of applied pressure — without stalling — so you can most effectively treat the areas that need it without a degradation in either amplitude or frequency. Why is percussive therapy important? To start with, we as tennis players are some of the best athletes in the world. A single session of tennis works out every major muscle group, delivering one of the best fullbody workouts of any sport in the world. So, in order to both perform at our best as well as recover from the demands tennis puts on our bodies, we utilize percussive therapy and reap all of the benefits that it provides, such as: Pre-match benefits: • Activating key muscle groups and improving range of motion and flexibility • Increasing blood flow and improving energy levels During match benefits: • Decreasing lactic acid to reduce muscle fatigue • Prevent tightening of muscles and help avoid injury

Recovery as a category is one of the most overlooked practices for the tennis athlete.

Post-match benefits: • Decreasing muscle soreness and stiffness, particularly post-activity • Hydrating soft tissue deep into the muscle • Reducing pain in deep-tissue recovery. With so many different options and choices available today, it’s important to know how your massage device works so you can treat your recovery the same as you treat your training. But without question as tennis players, every single one of us stands to benefit when we ensure that recovery in all its forms plays a central role in our daily routines. MAY/JUNE 2021 NETNEWS

NUTRITION

Plating A Performance Summer Salad BY PAGE LOVE, MS, RD, CSSD, AND EMILY NORRIS, DIETETIC INTERN

Salads are often seen as a boring weight-loss food, but they can be a great option for tennis players looking to fuel their performance. Fresh salads can be optimal for recovery, but in order to replace what was lost during activity, they must contain more than just greens. As a nutrition consultant for both the Women’s WTA Tour and Men’s ATP Tennis Tours, I often see even professional players choose incomplete meal salads not realizing how these choices may negatively impact their performance. The following will help you perform your best, but still obtain optimum, healthy nutrition from your favorite salad meal with a few tweaks! Complex Carbs – muscle energy choice Complex carbohydrates are the tennis player’s best friend and serve as the primary source of energy because of our higher intensity anaerobic energy needs. Complex carb toppings for salads could include beans, corn, or peas. Another option is to put a starch on the side such as pasta salad, baked or sweet potatoes or a legume/ lentil soup. You can even brighten up your salad with addition quick energy carb toppings such as dried or fresh fruits like oranges, grapes, apples, various berries, dried cranberries, or raisins.

Healthy oils – back-up energy sources Tennis players also need healthy oils, especially those from unsaturated sources like olive oil, avocado oil, and pumpkin oils; also consider nuts, seeds, or whole avocado. Oils are an excellent energy source and deliver vitamin E and other building blocks of anti-inflammatory agents in the body called “prostaglandins” that protect cells from damage and aid in quick recovery. If you’re watching the fat intake, opt for a dressing made with vegetable oil and vinegar, like balsamic vinegar or Italian vinaigrette.

Protein – muscle building blocks Protein is an essential building block of muscle and organ mass, and it helps repair and build muscle post-exercise. Some excellent protein sources to top your salad include eggs, chicken breast, beef, fish, and plant-based sources like tofu, garbanzo beans, or edamame. Aim for a palm-sized portion of meat to meet an adult’s minimum protein needs for a pre or post tennis meal. Dairy proteins can make great additions to a salad meal as well, including feta, blue or goat cheese crumbles. They help you to better meet your needs for calcium, too.

Flavor Check – and even more benefit Be a little creative and make salads an opportunity to explore new flavors! Spice things up with an ethnic twist such as an Asian Sesame dressing, and mandarin oranges or Southwest ranch dressing, black beans, corn, and salsa. And consider adding herbs such as cilantro, parsley, dill, and ginger. Fresh herbs add a twist of flavor and additional anti-inflammatory benefits. The options for salads are endless once you have the basics down!

Variety of Veggies – antioxidants for recovery Explore adding tomatoes, beets, carrots, cabbage, artichoke hearts, onions, mushrooms, peppers, cucumber, broccoli, and other colorful foods to your salads. The rich color spectrum choices, especially the deep reds and purples, have been proven to lower inflammation and speed muscle recovery time.

Extra, Extra – performance balance If you find your entrée salad a bit light or missing some of the important categories mentioned above, don’t be afraid to order off the menu. Pairing a salad with a complex carbohydrate-based side choices guarantees you will be satisfied and meeting your nutrient goals. Some appropriate choices include whole-grain dinner rolls, crackers, black bean or lentil soup, or a baked potato.
