Hometown Favorites WHICH DO YOU PREFER? GINGERBREAD COOKIES OR SUGAR COOKIES? WE ASKED OUR NEIGHBORS, HERE’S WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY!

Alexa St. Clair - Sugar Cookies, they’re classic and go with everything and you could add a lot to them. Shannon Hull- I like both but I’ll say, I like sugar cookies better because they’re a neutral favor you could enjoy all year round.

Roxanne - Sugar Cookies because they are sweeter. Mike - Sugar cookie because I’m a sugar holic!

Sam Krug- Sugar Cookie because they’re more interesting and more flavorful with spices verse the boring gingerbread cookie.

Liz Schofield - I prefer sugar cookies because I like the sweetness

Jenna Febbo- I prefer sugar cookies because you could do a lot more with them and they have a much more homie yummy taste to me than a gingerbread cookie.

James Tambi- I will pick Gingerbread cookie over sugar cookie because little bit of sugar, little bit of spice makes everything nice

WINTER 2023

Contributors

Letter from the Editor: Hello 08071! Oh winter, here you are! I love this time of year. You get to spend time with your loved ones and the thought of snow on the ground and holding hot chocolate in my hands warms my heart. I am excited for you to check out our Winter edition magazine dedicated to the lifestyle and commuKathy Chang nity of Pitman. EDITOR We start our holiday issue at the annual Santa parade and tree lighting. They have been a staple in the borough for two decades. Broadway is completely shut down. People line the streets to watch the parade as it makes its way to Ballard Park for the tree lighting. It’s definitely a sight to see! The festivities essentially kick off the holiday season. See what it is all about on page 7. Next we check out Dia De Los Burritos where they offer “local, fresh, made with love” Tex-Mex items. Owner Steven Narleski opened his place on Pitman Avenue as a humble 12-seat - lots of takeout space - in October 2015. With overwhelming support, he expanded in September 2016 for much needed kitchen space and to offer more seating. Along with Tex-Mex menu items, Narleski offers a line of hot sauces and salsas. Stop by and check it all out on page 8.

WINTER 2023

In this issue, we provide our annual Holiday gift guide. We walked Downtown Pitman to shop for the holidays. We highlighted some finds from not only tomes and bibliophiles for readers, but also teas and teapots at Words Matter – who knew? To iconic Christmas trees at Fahrenheit Ceramic Studio and stocking stuffers at The Scarecrow Factory and Sunflower Dressing Room. And how about sweet treats at Crazy Kat to Pitman-pride box-style shirts at The Corner Press. Check it all out starting on page 10. We round our holiday issue at the Pitman ReStore. It’s down along the corner of South Broadway. Stop inside the quaint storefront and you'll find a wide selection, replenished regularly with new donations that are well-organized by hard-working staff, who are mostly volunteers. ReStore is operated by the Gloucester County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, a nation-wide nonprofit organization that matches affordable housing solutions to families in need. In October, the Pitman ReStore celebrated 15 years in business. Check out all that they do on page 15. Also check out our Planning in Pitman on Page 18 for future community events and some special holiday recipes sprinkled throughout the magazine. All of this and more awaits on the pages ahead! Enjoy!

SANTA PARADE AND TREE LIGHTING HAVE BEEN A BOROUGH STAPLE FOR TWO DECADES

Holiday spirits off the charts in Pitman By Kathy Chang

I

f you want a holiday experience, I recommend attending the annual Santa Parade and tree lighting ceremony in Pitman. Everyone who lives in Pitman is literally outside. Well it seems like it haha! They line up along Broadway – which is closed off for the festivities. Some sit along the curb or some even bring their own folding chairs. It’s definitely a sight to see. Kids are delightfully running around, people are handing out soft pretzels for free … holiday spirits are way off the charts! The Santa Parade runs approximately 45 minutes and is sponsored by the borough and is organized by the Pitman Parade Committee. The parade was supposed to be held on Sunday, Nov. 26 this year, but because of the rain, it moved to Saturday, Dec. 2. The parade stepped off at 5 p.m. at the north end of Broadway and continued down Broadway to Ballard Park. The tree lighting is located in the center of the Edward Campbell Veterans Memorial in Ballard Park, and was lit at the conclusion of the parade. The parade included community members and groups, house of worship, special holiday characters, and more. Let’s just say it was full of holiday galore!

The man of the hour, Santa Claus, made his annual special appearance at the end of the parade. He traveled in the back of the last fire truck in the parade and joined everyone for the tree lighting at the park. As he waved to the crowd, chants of “Santa” rumbled down Broadway. Pitman Mayor Michael L. Razze Jr. has been involved with the coordination of the parades in Pitman for about 20 years, and has served as the parade committee chairman for the last 10. “At one time, the parade was coordinated by the Pitman Business Association (now known as the Greater Pitman Chamber of Commerce or Uptown Pitman), but it has been a few decades since the chamber has coordinated the event,” he said. “Many years ago, the parade was held on the Friday following Thanksgiving but was changed to Saturday evening to avoid the shopping that takes place on Black Friday in the business district. With the advent of Small Business Saturday, the parade was eventually moved to Sunday last year to prevent any issues with parking in the business district and the need to have cars off Broadway for the safety of the parade participants and those who come out to view the parade. “With the renaissance that downtown Pitman has seen over the past decade or so, the need to change the day of the parade became a necessity to allow our businesses in that area to have some of their best sales days ever.” The Santa Parde and tree lighting is a great community effort and was a great way to kick off the holiday season. — 08071

‘WHEN THE MOOD STRIKES’

DIA DE LOS BURRITOS OFFERS “LOCAL, FRESH, MADE WITH LOVE” TEX-MEX ITEMS By Kathy Chang

A

t Dia De Los Burritos, owner Steven Narleski wanted to create a cool atmosphere for those who visit. And after eight years, he has certainly done that from the hip eclectic décor – a bit of Mexican flair and tribute to Pitman’s historic charm - to the menu items. Coolness is certainly the atmosphere; however, what hits the taste buds can be far from cool. At Dia De Los Burritos, Narleski has a line of hot sauces and salsas that he concocts when the mood strikes. “Some of the hot sauces are just crazy ideas … sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t,” he said with laughter. “We have a strawberry banana hot sauce that is really, really hot. It’s delicious, really sweet … I don’t know why I made it, don’t really know what to put it on … but I had to make it. Some people really like it.” Other hot sauces include smoked garlic habanero, roadhouse, pineapple ginger mango and ghost pepper. Can we say fire, but yum! Like hot sauces and salsas, menu items will also change when the mood strikes. PHOTOS BY ANDREA MENDOZA

“We eat so much of the food, you get tired of eating the same thing and add to the menu,” Narleski honestly explained, adding changing items cannot be forced either. Dia De Los Burritos holds a Taco Tuesday featuring different tacos each week. “We will redo popular ones once every month,” Narleski said. A recent offering included swordfish with charred kale, chipotle spread, shaved radish and serrano peppers. Mmmmm! “The bacon triple ranch tacos are very popular,” Narleski said. “Our roadhouse quesadilla has a hot sauce that we make here, and a burrito we do every Friday has tater tots and burrito crumbles in it … there’s some fun stuff.” Dia De Los Burritos offers “local, fresh, made with love” Tex-Mex items. It opened as a humble 12-seat, lots of takeout space on Pitman Avenue in October 2015. Thanks to the overwhelming support of local Pitman residents and word of mouth, Dia De Los Burritos expanded in September 2016, according to its website. Narleski said he was on the fence before he opened his restaurant because he didn’t really have restaurant experience. What he did know at the time was he “hated” his job and after receiving feedback from friends – one who opened up a coffee shop and one that opened an ice cream shop - he decided to take the restaurateur leap. At the time, the area did not offer a TexMex type restaurant near Rowan College. So that is how it all started. “My plan was to make it work,” Narleski recalled. “I didn’t really have a long, long term plan, just try to succeed.” And with a smile, Narkleski continued and said, “I’m happy with where [Dia De Los Burritos] is and happy with what I’m doing now. “Obviously there’s stress that comes with any job, it’s different when it’s for yourself. Some days your business owns you, but it’s worth it overall.”— 08071 Dia De Los Burritos is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. 08071

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? By N.J. Ackermann

A

re you looking to make your home holiday-cozy, seeking those perfect gifts, or shopping for things to make a gathering more festive? Whatever you look for this season, you can find in Pitman. Stroll down South Broadway into Fahrenheit Ceramic Studio, and you’ll see tables filled with adults and children painting, sponging and stamping their personal works of art. “The ceramic Christmas trees are the most iconic,” says sales associate, Molly Lentz. “People come in telling us stories about their moms and grandmoms who painted them in the 70s and 80s.” With nearly 500 pottery selections, a gift certificate of $20 to $35 will give your artist-fora-day a masterpiece and a special memory. At Words Matter, in addition to those tomes for readers and bibliophiles, there are teas and teapots, games and art supplies, Batman Advent Calendars, slippers, fancy pens, and more. Having signed the lease in April 2020, owner Keryl Hausmann has made it through the pandemic. She says it wasn’t easy, but it was her calling. “We can order any book, preorder [a new release], and we have gift certificates,” she states. Keryl also hosts events, book clubs, and author meet-and-greets, a schedule you can find on her Facebook page.

SHOP DOWNTOWN PITMAN FOR ALL YOUR HOLIDAY NEEDS Another show of success is the partnership of The Scarecrow Factory and Sunflower Dressing Room, two shops in one. For her country shoppe, Scarecrow owner Diane Dacqua acquires repurposed items from nearby sources and décor designed by local artists. Sunflower owner Terry Jacobucci likewise specializes in one-of-a-kind clothing and adorable items that are anything but common. Their shelves are overflowing with a vast assortment of goods, and with prices starting at less than a dollar, you can fill the stockings and find unique gifts without breaking the bank. Many shops in Pitman seem to have unique finds, and A Touch of Ireland is no exception. Says Mary Miller, one of the owners, “A lot of people are surprised at the amount of food we carry. We sell breakfast beans and all the Irish breakfast meats; bangers, rashers, black pudding and white pudding, and we have sodas, candies, crisps, and mince pies.” Of course, they also carry stained glass, perfumes, and jewelry imported from across the sea, as well as Celtic Santas and wearables for the “wee little lambs.” see GIFT GUIDE page 12

WINTER 2023

GIFT GUIDE 08037 from page 10 Pitman also continues to experience a resurgence, with many new shops entering the scene. The Gentle Giant Café caters to the increasing number of vegans, vegetarians, empaths, and animal lovers. “Serving compassion in thought, word & eats,” the walls are lined with paintings of farm animals, alive and happy. As the first 100% vegan restaurant in the county, a holiday certificate from here is not only trendy, but bestows peace and goodwill to all. The Crazy Kat right next door not only has vegan treats, but baked goods of all kinds, including gluten free. Their motto, scrawled on the wall in pink neon is, “Life Is Short, Eat Dessert First.” Yet another growing Pitman business, they knocked down an interior wall and expanded into an establishment that now offers wine, ice cream, and a café area where you can rest and enjoy your treats. For upscale gifts at a surprisingly low price point, visit maggie paige. Any fashionista on your list will find satisfaction among the shelves of accessories and jewelry, pegboards of purses, and walls of stonewashed jeans. Their inventory is selected from wholesale markets and fashion shows in New York City and Atlanta. According to store manager Allison Hall, the highest-priced item is tagged at only $90, so a gift certificate from here could provide the giftee with a fun-filled, shabby-chic spree. For simpler tastes and sports fans, you can’t beat the variety of T-shirts at The Corner Press. Peruse their racks and you will see images and messages of all sorts, in all colors. They have sports logos, Pitman-pride, box-style shirts, and fitted shirts for curvy people. Another success story, business is so brisk that they recently consolidated their inventory. They also carry baseball caps and can customize any theme that your friends and family might favor. So, what are you looking for? Well, whatever it is, you can find it in Pitman! — 08071

From Our Family to Yours I genuinely enjoy making traditional Mexican recipes. It means the world to me. I have a passion for it, and I love sharing a part of who I am, and where I came from with everyone who has not yet had the privilege of trying authentic Mexican meals. It makes me happy to see his reaction after taking the first bite of my work, my culture, my history, and seeing a smile fills my heart with joy. Making traditional Mexican food is more to me than just eating and filling our tummies. It goes beyond that. It feeds the soul, and the spirit as well. That is why pozole is always a must when it comes to our Holiday traditions. –Ashley Hoopo, Marketing Consultant

Pozole Rojo

(Mexican Pork and Hominy Stew) PREP TIME: 30 mins. COOK TIME: 3 hrs. TOTAL TIME: 3 hrs. 30 mins. SERVINGS: 12 servings INGREDIENTS • 4 ounces dried guajillo or ancho chiles, or a combination of both • Salt • 1 large (108-ounce, 6 lb. 12 oz, 3 kg) can white hominy, drained and rinsed. • 3 pounds pork shoulder (preferably with bone), cut into 1 to 1 1/2-inch cubes (can also use pork shanks), make sure to use a cut well marbled with fat. • 8 cloves garlic, 4 cloves roughly chopped, and 4 whole cloves. • 3 bay leaves • 1 teaspoon ground cumin. • 2 tablespoons dry oregano (Mexican oregano if available) Garnishes (can prep while pozole is cooking): • 1/2 small cabbage thinly sliced. • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped. • 1/2 white onion, chopped. • 2 avocados, chopped. • 4 limes, quartered. • 1 bunch red radishes sliced thin. • 12 to 24 tostada shells (see Recipe Note) METHOD 1. Boil 5 quarts water: Fill a large 10-to12-quart stockpot with 5 quarts of water. Set on heat to bring to a boil while you proceed with the next steps. 2. Heat the chiles, cover with 3 cups hot water: Remove and discard the WINTER 2023

stems, seeds, and large veins from the chili pods. Heat a cast iron pan on medium high and heat the chili pods for a couple minutes, until they begin to soften. Do not let them burn. While the chilies are heating, bring a medium pot with 3 cups of water to a simmer and remove from heat. Once the chiles have softened, add the chiles to the pot hot water and cover. Let the chiles soak in the hot water for 15 to 20 minutes. 3. Brown the pork, add garlic: Heat a tablespoon or two of olive oil (enough to coat the bottom of the pan) in a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Pat the pork pieces dry with paper towels. Sprinkle them generously with salt. Working in batches, taking care not to crowd the pan or stir the meat much, brown the meat on all sides. Right at the end of browning the meat, add 4 cloves of roughly chopped garlic to the pan with the meat, let cook with the meat for about a minute. 4. Add the pork and spices to large pot of boiling water: Once the meat has browned, transfer it to the large stockpot of boiling water. Scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pan, and any garlic, and add those to the pot as well. Add the rinsed hominy. Add bay leaves, cumin, and oregano. When you put the oregano in, smoosh together with your hands so that the oregano breaks up more as it goes in. Add a tablespoon of salt. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat and cook for 15 minutes. 5. Prepare the red sauce: by puréeing in a blender, the chilies, 2 1/2 cups or so of their soaking liquid, a teaspoon of salt, and 4 cloves of garlic. (To prevent the blender from creating too much pressure, it's probably best to start with the 14

chiles and garlic and only a cup of the liquid in the blender, and then adding the rest of the liquid.) Strain the red sauce through a sieve, discarding the tough bits of the sauce. 6. Add the red chili sauce to the pot with the pork and hominy: Add another couple teaspoons of salt. Return to a simmer, lower the heat to just high enough to maintain a simmer, partially covered. 7. Cook for 2 to 3 hours until the pork is completely tender: Skim away excess fat. Taste for seasoning and add more salt to taste (you will likely need more than you expect, perhaps a tablespoon or more.) The resulting soup should be rather brothy, as you will be adding a lot garnishes. Add more water if necessary. 8. Assemble the garnishes: When getting ready to serve the pozole, you can prep the garnishes (slice the cabbage, chop the cilantro, etc.) To serve, arrange the garnishes in bowls on the table and serve the pozole soup into bowls. Let your guests pick and choose which garnishes they would like on their pozole. Serve with tostada shells (or tortilla chips if you can't find tostada shells).  08071

Gloucester County ReStore:

A Gift to the Community THE STORE CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN BUSINESS THIS YEAR By Diana DiSimine

own along the corner of South Broadway, there’s a shop whose quaint storefront advertises secondhand homegoods. Stop inside and you’ll find a wide selection, replenished regularly with new donations that are wellorganized by hard-working staff. The staff you see are mostly volunteers, spending their hours.

This past October, the Pitman ReStore celebrated its 15th year in business. In those years, it has helped the local community find furniture, gems, and household necessities at affordable prices. But the ReStore isn’t just a shop that operates at your convenience -- it serves a community much larger than Pitman alone. ReStore is operated by the Gloucester County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, a nation-wide nonprofit organization

that matches affordable housing solutions to families in need. When you purchase a secondhand item from ReStore, you are not only recycling would-be waste; you are contributing to another person’s chance at a better life. The Habitat for Humanity puts their profits towards home improvement projects that can provide shelter for those who need a home. But that’s just talk. There is living proof in the work that Habitat for Humanity takes pride in. This past November, they celebrated their 53rd home in Gloucester County, on 48 West Howard Street in see RESTORE page 17

RESTORE 08037 from page 15 Clayton. The profits from ReStore went towards the construction of that new home, and helped the Habitat offer that home at a cost affordable to their clients. And who are these volunteers, working hard to manage the never-ending flow of new donations to the store? This past November, the uptick of women’s faces came from the Women in Business week event, recruiting female employees of local businesses such as Nexus Glassboro, Paparone New Homes, and The Oakley Group to support the Habitat cause. Sometimes, young volunteers come from the Rowan University Habitat chapter, wanting to gain experience and help out local community. And sometimes, volunteers are even Habitat clients themselves, helping pay off the reduced cost of their new home by spending some hours at the store, dues that the Habitat refers to as “sweat equity.” These volunteers have been sorting the wide variety of donations they receive every day, and new arrivals can be tracked on the Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity Facebook page. Comfy sofas, like-new stoves, and useful cabinets may be of interest, but there’s one category of items you certainly won’t want to miss: stop in, and check out the large stock of red-and-green decor and plastic evergreen trees this holiday season. If you’re still gift-hunting for your loved ones, maybe the gift they’ll cherish is among the variety of big and small goods you can find at the ReStore on South Broadway. And you can shop with a good conscience, knowing your proceeds will help further the Habitat mission. What’s more, you can continue to further it, too, by giving away something you no longer need. Whether you’re donating a piece of furniture, or placing a new toy in the Toys for Tots drop box, your donated item could make a great gift for somebody else. The ReStore does the community so much good, yet it is pitifully easy to overlook. Take a stroll down South Broadway, stop inside, and see for yourself the hard work that Habitat for Humanity puts towards the Gloucester County community. — 08071 08071
