hen new and long-timers walk into Domenic Graziano Flowers & Gifts, they are reminded of a time when shop owners knew your name, and exemplary customer service was at the forefront of every transaction. For nearly 45 years, this mom-and-pop operation has been providing customers in Bucks County and surrounding areas with memorable floral arrangements for a myriad of special occasions, rites of passage and memorable events. It is reassuring that husband-and-wife owners Domenic
and Joanne Graziano, who admit that they are still madly in love with flowers, clearly have no plans for slowing down anytime in the future. When he was 12 years old, Domenic started working at a neighborhood floral business, and in 1978 the 19-year-old opened his first shop. Joanne worked in her sister’s flower shop for five years, and after that, she opened her own shop in Horsham. In addition, her father, Thomas, grew roses for 56 years and always had that fragrant please see GRAZIANO, page 8 6

smell on him; so, it appears to be fate that his daughter continues his legacy. Domenic and Joanne have been working together for many years and have been married for six. They have 11 grandchildren, who understand their strong work ethic. As such, they take great pride in offering “high quality, good prices and exceptional customer service.” Joanne can usually be found in the front of the shop, with Domenic putting orders together in the back. The Southampton store is the largest of the three locations at 10,000 square feet, 2,500 of them under refrigeration. The Grazianos also have stores in Warminster and Doylestown. “Sending flowers makes people happy and makes people smile,” explains Domenic. “We are here for the special occaplease see GRAZIANO, page 9

sions – weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and new arrivals -thos e points that they want to mark in their life. We are arranging flowers for people now whose parents we helped with their weddings; it seems to come around full circle.” Holidays are the most hectic time for the business, from Thanksgiving through Christmas, but the one big day for floral arrangements of all sizes is Valentine’s Day. Throughout the year this family-owned and operated business has built an extremely loyal following for its floral arrangements, gift baskets and corporate gifts. When it comes to ordering flowers, specialized arrangements or gift baskets for any occasion, Joanne advises, “The sooner the better; a lot of our orders come in two or more weeks ahead.”
For this husband-and-wife team, their passion for flowers endures. “I like the way the business is constantly changing with the holiday and the
seasons,” Joanne says. “It is definitely hard work, but it is so rewarding to work with people during their happy occasions like weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs as well as their time of need when they are planning a funeral.” In April 2012, the couple expanded the business to include an Artisan Marketplace
with 100 vendors of Made-in-America gifts. Today, the marketplace boasts a total of 400 vendors with representation from all 50 states. Among the popular handmade gift items that catch the eyes of customers as they walk around are shelves filled with cutting boards, bowls and other wood products, jewelry, candles, baby items, men’s gifts, blown glass, frames and plaques with clever sayings. “The quality of the workmanship that comes out of the artisan’s kitchen tables and sheds is truly remarkable,” says Joanne. “Our customers say they know they can always find that perfect gift because of the varieties of unique products that we carry.” The three stores are open seven days a week, and same-day delivery is available in Philadelphia and its suburbs if you call before 3 p.m. For more information, go to www.domenicgraziano.com or call 800-3521550. ■

Dr. Breitman - The Dentist’s Dentist When other dentists seek high-quality care for themselves and their families, they turn to Dr. Joseph B. Breitman at Prosthodontics Limited. Since 1979, Dr. Breitman has practiced a unique specialty at 8021-B Castor Avenue in Rhawnhurst – a specialty available at only 20 locations throughout the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia. Dr. Breitman is a board certified prosthodontist. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in restoring and replacing damaged and missing teeth. Working alongside Dr. Breitman are implant surgeon and periodontist, Dr. Natalie Amoa, dental technical specialist Jerry Turano, office manager Rachel Lafontant, receptionist Pat Kellam, dental assistants Freda Borecki, Linda Selinsky and expanded functions dental auxiliary Rita Zeitone. Hygiene and maintenance care are provided by Karen Stanford, RDH. “Quality restorations are the hallmark of my practice,” said Dr. Breitman. “We specialize in painfree prosthetic and restorative dentistry.” State-of-the art technology produces the finest and longest-lasting bonding, veneers, gold onlays and inlays, crowns, bridges, dentures (partial, complete, and precision), and implant-borne restorations. A broad variety of treatment options ensures maximum oral health in every patient. Dr. Breitman states “Absolutely everything is sterilized with state-of-the-art equipment.” Dental restorations are created in Dr. Breitman’s in-house laboratory and he says “many dentists use outside labs, but they take more time and there is no control. The in-house

lab lets me control the quality and details of each patient’s treatment.” X-rays are made via a computer and digital sensors that reduce radiation as much as 95 percent and make the study available for immediate diagnosis. The Northeast’s extensive senior citizen population benefits by having an office of this specialty in this area. Since people are living longer and retaining more of their natural teeth, techniques are available to improve appearance. Whitening, bonding, color matching, veneers to reshape teeth and placement of fixed prostheses, like crowns and bridges, will enhance smiles. Before deciding on a treatment, Dr. Breitman weighs each patient’s needs. Do they need a fixed bridge, implants, crowns, complete or removable dentures?
teeth and jaws for proper bite. Restoration is available for people with conditions including temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and birth defects such as cleft palate and congenital malformations. Those who have sustained traumatic injuries, and patients who have undergone surgical or radiation treatment for cancer may also be helped by Dr. Breitman. In addition, sports injuries to the teeth can very often be treated with restorative and prosthetic therapy. For patients who have sleep apnea, an oral appliance may help if a C-PAP cannot be well tolerated. “Fifty percent of our patients come from other dentists,” Dr. Breitman said. “The other half is referred by patients who have been here.” But area residents are not the only patients he treats. His outstanding reputation reaches as far as Europe. “Patients come from all over,” he said. “We also treat many other dentists and physicians.” Dr. Breitman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1977. He completed a three-year post-doctoral specialty training residency in Prosthodontics at Temple University School of Dentistry. He has completed the arduous four part certification process consisting of written and oral exams to become board certified. He has been a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at Temple University School of Dentistry.
Dental implants have become the procedure of choice among patients who are missing all or some of their teeth. Implants attach artificial teeth directly to the jaw. They can replace one or more teeth, provide support for a partial denture or attach a full denture. We can help you make the choice that is best for you.

hen Bronwen Mayer Henry was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2013, her world changed, but not in the way you would expect. Sure, she was nervous about the treatment, concerned about how she was going to care for her family, worried about her survival, but something happened along the way that changed her life, and the lives of those around her, in ways that she could never have imagined. Shortly after her cancer diagnosis, Henry attended a women’s retreat where attendees were asked to create a list of “wildly impossible” life goals. One of her goals was to paint daily, something she hadn’t done in many years, although she still had a collection of paints, brushes and an easel stored away in the attic. She then returned home to focus on her treatment. Following her thyroidectomy, Henry knew she would be required to take a radioactive iodine pill and stay in isolation for seven days. please see BRONWEN, page 11

Aside from the fear of the radioactive pill itself, Henry had never been alone for that length of time in her life. Of course, today, in light of the pandemic, many of us know all too well what that isolation can feel like. Henry knew she needed to do something to prepare herself to get through her time in seclusion. It was then that she thought back to her days at the women’s retreat, and the idea of painting came back to her. “I had the inspiration that, since I loved painting, I would use those seven days alone as a personal retreat and do some painting,” says Henry. “Then I had this idea that I would paint on a large scale, something I had never done before. I went out and bought a canvas more than four times bigger than anything I’d ever painted before and made a plan to start the painting as soon as I swallowed that pill.” Henry recalls the terror of taking the pill, having to stay in isolation, being away from her husband and children, but says she had the odd sensation of “joyful terror” at the prospect of painting on such a large scale and letting her creativity shine through all of the fear. “The time I spent in isolation was so transformative, it completely changed me,” says Henry. “I thought it would be the first please see BRONWEN, page 13

and last time I painted, especially on such a large scale, but during my time of recovery I came to the realization that I didn’t have to have cancer to paint. I realized that the painting practice I had stepped into could be more than an exercise or a detour or salve for a singular event. It could be my new life.” Eight years later, Henry has created more than 500 paintings and sold more than 350 of her pieces, written and published a book about her experience called “Radioactive Painting,” designed and led a number of retreats focusing on how to break through creative barriers, and works with a number of nonprofit organizations that support causes close to her heart. She donates 10 percent from the sale of each painting to local nonprofits. “So many people hold themselves back from stepping into a creative and compassionate life, and I want to reverse that trend,” says Henry. “Like many artists, I have dual occupations. I spend half of my time at the canvas and leading workshops and retreats, and the other half immersed in a career in nonprofit work. As a mother, daughter, artist and through my work in the nonprofit sector, I find myself living in an increasingly fulfilling, stimulating, heart-expanding and restorative way.”
Henry serves as Director of Curricular Innovation for Interfaith Philadelphia, supporting programs that help people build skills to create a more compassionate and understanding world. She recently completed a certificate program on Social Impact Strategy, a nonprofit leadership program at the University of Pennsylvania, and will be working in collaboration with Penn and Interfaith Philadelphia on a program called Faith and Social Impact to support people working in the faith sector who are making a social impact in their communities. “Throughout this whole experience, I’ve learned how important it is to give yourself space to do the things that bring you joy in life,” says Henry. “I want to help change the way we view our creativity and focus on making it a priority. Just like doing exercise, creativity should be part of your overall plan of wellbeing. It’s so important for your mental and physical health and allows you to bring even more joy and fulfillment to the rest of your life.” Henry’s artwork is on display at numerous locations in the Huntingdon Valley area, including Be Well Bakery & Café, Bryn Athyn College, Fettersmill Bed & Breakfast, Valley Hair Design and various local shops. She continues to paint daily and accepts commissions. For samples of her artwork and for more information, visit www.bronwenmayerhenry.com. ■

‘Buyer & Cellar’

ike most theaters across the country, Act II Playhouse is excitedly celebrating its first season back after COVID19 shuttered entertainment venues for a year and a half. But unlike most theaters, Act II is offering a season that’s 100 percent upbeat. Following the holiday variety show Really Good Tidings and the comedy A Couple of Swells, the laughs continue as Act II, located at 56 E. Butler Ave. in Ambler, presents Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer & Cellar, on stage March 1 through April 3. “People have been miserable for two years. We’re not doing Death of a Salesman. We’re going to do things that bring joy, bring smiles under those masks,” said Act II Playhouse artistic director Tony Braithwaite. “I think that’s what people are craving at this point.” The one-man Buyer & Cellar centers on the story of Alex, a struggling actor who lands quite the unprecedented job. He becomes the only employee hired to staff the “shoppes” at the home of Barbra Streisand, who builds a fake mall in her basement to display her vast array of costumes, shoes, dolls and antiques. “It’s this hilarious story, part true, part fiction,” said Braithwaite. “The true part is that Barbra Streisand really did build a fake mall in the basement of her house in Malibu to display her private collection. You can even find pictures online. When Jonathan Tolins, the author, found out about that, he took that
19006
truth and imposed a fiction onto it and created this character Alex, who is this out-of-work actor hired to staff the shops and be there in case ‘Babs’ comes down for a visit on any given day.” Starring as Alex is Zachary Chiero, a former Philadelphian who is thrilled to return to the area and tackle a brand new challenge - performing alone. “It’s very intimidating,” he admitted. “It’s just the one person and he embodies a couple of different characters throughout. It’s like a 40-page monologue, but I think it’ll be a lot of fun.” As Chiero narrates Alex’s experience, he’ll personify a slew of personalities, including Streisand herself. However, he stressed that there will be no “blonde wigs or gowns or anything like that.” When it was decided that Buyer & Cellar would be included in Act II Playhouse’s 2021-22 season, Braithwaite instantly had Chiero in mind to play Alex. The pair previously appeared together in Mel Brooks’ The Producers at the Bucks County Center for the Performing Arts. “As I was reading the script, I was hearing him in my brain. He’s just charming, selfdeprecating, very winning and funny - all of the things that Alex needs to be,” said Braithwaite. “He narrates his experiences as he lives it. It’s like being in Starbucks and catching up with your hilarious best friend who you haven’t seen in a while and he’s like, ‘Wait until you hear about this.’ It has that intimacy to it when Alex narrates to the audience.” Upon learning more about Alex and his inspiring character arc, Chiero didn’t hesitate to come on board. “He is somebody who’s in a low place and really struggling. Through this very weird turn of events, he finds his passion again. I think that’s something that a lot of people can connect to, especially right now,” said Chiero. “Everybody is exhausted and struggling in one way or another. Hopefully, getting to witness somebody find their fire again and be in a tumultuous and strange situation but come out of that with a new sense of purpose, a new sense of drive, I’d like to think that’s something audiences can watch and celebrate.” COVID-19 safety protocols are in place. Tickets and more information can be found by visiting act2.org or calling 215-654-0200. ■ PHOTOS COURTESY OF ACT II PLAYHOUSE

many of the world’s greatest magicians, illusionists and sleight of hand artists, including the Amazing Kreskin, Stevie Starr, also known as “the regurgitator,” and master mentalist Jon Stetson. Founded by seasoned magicians and Philadelphia natives Danny Archer and Marty Martin, the 60-seat theater boasts perfect views from every seat and has been selling out shows since its opening. 16
“Magic is a live performing art,” says Archer. “While we were able to transition to a livestreaming format during the pandemic, magic is best experienced in person. When you’re watching a live show, you can’t say oh, the camera did this or the performer handed something to someone else. and doubting the reality of what you just saw.” Archer and Martin began working together in the mid-’80s, when they ran a magic store in Center City called the Philadelphia Magic Company, which became the fourth-largest magic shop in the country. The store eventually closed when the city took eminent domain over their building to construct the Pennsylvania Convention Center. In the 1990s, the two formed a company called Corporate Entertainment, where they designed promotions and used magic to attract visitors and launch products for major companies around the world. Archer later moved to Denver and performed as a magician at a large ski resort for a while before returning to the Philadelphia area. When he reconnected with his old friend Martin and told him about his idea to create a dedicated magic theater, Smoke & Mirrors became a reality. From its conception, the theater was designed to be an intimate space to give audiences an up-close-and-personal experience with the world of magic. The auditorium was built in the style of the small boutique, European amphitheaters that Archer encountered during his travels as a magician early on in his career. “It took a lot of effort to design this theater so every sight line is perfect. There’s not a bad seat in the house,” says Martin. Seats are
arranged in alternating row patterns so every there’s something different every week.” The theater is also home to the Bob Little member of the audience has a clear view of the stage. “The furthest seat from the stage is Lounge, a 60-seat “black box” banquet room only 18 feet away, so no matter where you’re that hosts BYOB comedy shows and is availsitting, you can see the top of the magician’s able for private parties and corporate events.
