HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2022

Boheme Opera NJ Presents a Not-So-“Grimm” Hansel and Gretel

On December 4 at 3:00 pm, Boheme Opera NJ will present Engelbert Humperdinck’s operatic adaptation of the timeless Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel at Kendall Hall Theater on the campus of The College of New Jersey. A vibrant cast and stunning virtual sets will bring to life the story you may have only “seen” in your mind. Amazing visual and musical treats will make a familiar tale something exciting and unexpected.

The opera takes a different path to its happy ending than the original story, since the fairytales the Grimms collected for their famous anthology often lived up to the sib lings’ surname. Humperdinck toned down the more…grim…elements, maintained the core theme and events, and created a magi cal, musical journey that’s been an audience favorite since its 1893 premier.

In the Grimm telling, the mother (later

the stepmother) forces the father to aban don Hansel and Gretel in the forest so that both parents don’t die of hunger. The opera sees a frustrated mother chase the misbehaving children out of the house to go to the forest to pick wild strawberries. Unlike the candidate for “parent of the year” in the brothers’ version, Humperdinck’s mother panics and chases after them with her hus band when he tells her that there’s an evil witch, with a taste for children, living in the forest.

The outcome is the same: Hansel and Gretel escape, the witch dies; good tri umphs, evil loses.

Hansel and Gretel was created as a holi day gift for children. This year, treat yourself and the children in your life – of all ages – to Boheme Opera NJ’s production of this time less classic.

Happily ever after never tasted so good!

HANSEL AND GRETEL. December 4 at 3:00 pm. Kendall Hall Theater on the campus

of TCNJ. Sung in English. Directed and con ducted by Boheme Opera NJ Artistic Director Joseph Pucciatti. Starring mezzo-soprano Kai tlyn Tierney as Hansel, soprano Kerri Lynn

Slominski as Gretel and contralto Alison Bol shoi as The Witch. Virtual sets by J. Matthew Root. For tickets and information, visit www. bohemeopera.org.

2022

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to fly an airplane?

Imagine sitting in the pilot seat and looking straight out to the horizon to see the blue skies and clouds. And then when you look to your right you see the Philadelphia skyline and to your left New York City the skyline. Flying is an incredible feeling. Talk about seeing the world from a different perspective. Ok, maybe you have flown in a commercial plane to Florida or Utah, but there is something so unique about flying in a single engine airplane. When flying in a Cessna Skyhawk, you are seeing the world from a completely different view than on the ground or a commercial jet. The Princeton Flying School at the Princeton Airport offers an extraordinary experience of an Introductory Flying Lesson.

In the beginning you will go through a pre-flight inspection to ensure the airplane is ready for flight, as all pilots do. Then, you will spend an hour in the air with a certified

flight instructor going over some basic maneuvers. You will even get a chance to fly the airplane yourself! But do not worry; there are dual controls in the planes, so the instructor is there to assist you the entire time.

When people return from their first Introductory Flying Lesson they are elated and often speechless. Many have said it was their dream to fly a plane, and it finally came true! This is a very special hour. Not only is this a special experience, but it counts as your first hour towards getting your Private Pilot’s License. Many students are inspired during their Introductory Flying Lesson to continue to study and train for their Private Pilot’s License, while others are completely captivated by this hour and feel fulfilled. Either way, flying an airplane is something very special and you have the power to be the one who makes this experience possible.

An Introductory Flying Lesson is the perfect gift to give to that someone who seems to have everything and you just don’t

know what to buy. What better gift than an experience of a lifetime. This holiday season struggle no more when it comes to gift giving. As long as they are tall enough to reach

the pedals, they can fly. Call 609-921-3100 for more information or visit us on the web at www.PrincetonFlyingSchool.com Happy flying!

1. Set your budget before you start shopping

If you’re not planning to cap your holiday spending, it’s a good idea to have a budget in mind.

Be sure to include the cost of any group swap gifts, Pollyannas, and even teacher/coworker gifts!

2. Build your “to-buy-for”

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2022

list

Create a list of exactly who you need gifts for before heading to the store. It’ll preserve your sanity, but save you time as well! Check off each name once you purchase their gift.

3. Make a gift-buying schedule

The more gifts you’ll need to purchase, the better it is to construct a gift-buying schedule; which will help to avoid feeling overwhelmed during the holiday season.

You’ll need to prioritize by your timeline of events: think teachers, colleagues, friends, service providers — anyone you’ll need to gift before the actual holiday.

4. Shop Local!

We all want to shop online to make the most of our time, but when it comes time to shop for that special gift, think about supporting that mom-and-pop, or local art shop first.

Speak with your local merchants for certain gifts you are looking for, if you don’t see it in store, it could be something they can order for you. Buying local keeps the money within your local economy, while also helping to provide new employment and job opportunities for people within your community.

5. Cut Out the Middleman

Small businesses make more money – much more money – when you buy from them directly. For example, Food delivery services take up to 30% or more when you order meals through their website rather than the restaurant itself.

with Santa

6. Buy Gift Cards

A gift card from a local small business – whether a retailer, spa, salon, restaurant –makes a great gift and the business gets the money upfront. This is a terrific way to support your local business community and find the perfect gift for that hard-to-please person on your list.

7. Order Online from Local Stores

Don’t want to leave the house? Shop online from your local small businesses. Many of them have e-commerce websites. If they don’t? Pick up the phone to order.
