Discover brighter days ahead at The Evergreens

L

ife at The Evergreens just keeps getting better. A continuing care retirement community (CCRC), The Evergreens has begun the initial phases of a major campus renovation project totaling approximately $10 million. The renovation includes extensive upgrades to existing common areas throughout the senior living community, which is home to approximately 216 residents. The Evergreens, an affiliate of Acts Retirement-Life Communities, is engaged in the development of the two-year project, which includes a fully renovated clubhouse, lobby area, and front entrance. The clubhouse will feature a new bistro, coffee shop, library, theater, wellness center, hair salon, and rehabilitation space as well as an expanded fitness center and renovated main dining room and game room.

Located in historic Moorestown, New Jersey, The Evergreens offers active seniors a resort-like lifestyle on a lovely, scenic campus. Residents enjoy a host of gracious living options, an array of activities and amenities, and a wonderful community of friends and neighbors. Worry-free living at The Evergreens is always worth considering, but our new price plan options make it more affordable than ever. There’s no better time to consider a move than right now. The Evergreens is an investment in comfort and security, replacing the unpredictable expenses of private home ownership with a one-time, upfront entrance fee and subsequent monthly fees that are both comprehensive and predictable. Residents may also realize significant tax advantages. Most seniors need addi-

tional medical care as they age. Should serious medical needs arise, an Acts Life Care® premier plan contract covers nearly all those needs for life, and the monthly fee will not increase solely as the result of transferring from independent living to a higher level of care (assisted living or skilled nursing). Your nest egg will be protected. With a new year beginning, the perfect time to consider all the things you want from your retirement. Choosing a life filled with great friends, creativity and adventure at The Evergreens is not just the happiest decision you’ll make, but also the smartest. Call us today at (856) 372-5819 or visit AboutActs.com/Sun to find out how you can celebrate the best years of your life. ■

he holidays have come and gone and winter is here. When you are on a grief journey, this season can be especially difficult. There are some things you can do to make steps forward in your grief throughout this season. It is a new year, but sometimes it is hard to feel an expectancy. People tend to be in their homes more over the winter. On your grief journey, you may want socialization and company. Talking, Gathering and Remembering are things you can do which will help you on your grief journey. TALK - talking about the person who died is good. No one wants to be forgotten. Sharing about him or her keeps their memory alive. It may bring tears but inevitably it will also bring smiles. Sometimes, you may not be able to talk about them. If you cannot, write down your feelings. Find an outlet to

share your thoughts. Do not keep them inside. You can call a friend, write a letter, talk to a family member. GATHER - be around people even if it is for a short period of time. You may not feel like being present or you may be partially present. Explain that with those around you. It is appropriate to voice that it is a difficult time. People do understand. If they do not, they will try. Death is an inevitable part of life; everyone will experience it. Most times, people may not know what to say to you. Be ready for that. Gathering can be a quick coffee, a meal with someone you know or a family dinner. REMEMBER - we never forget the ones who die. Do not think of it as 'never forgetting'; think of it as remembering. Remembering the person, the emotions, the feelings, the life. Remember where they sat,

light a candle, mention their name around the table, toast their life, have a mass said in their memory. At some point, we all learn to live in our loss. Eventually, we will not be sad or cry every hour of the day or even every day. Our loss becomes part of our story. A story we can share so others know they can survive too. If you'd like some literature on coping and your grief journey; please call us (856)9831005. Sincerely, Your Friends at Bradley Funeral Home ■

Tips From South Jersey Window Tinting

nstalling films on the interior windows of your home may not be at the top of your home-makeover “to-do” list, but South Jersey Window Tinting has several good reasons why homeowners should consider this a priority. South Jersey Window Tinting believes in, “Block the Sun, Not the View” concept. As one of the area's largest contractors of window films, South Jersey Window Tinting

has more than three decades of experience and knowledge in the importance of Window Film. Here are some tips why window tinting is essential: Why should people seriously consider investing in window tinting for their home? “For heat, glare, fading of flooring, furniture, paintings, wallpaper, etc. We also offer safety film to protect from glass breakage and intruders”. How does putting film on the

windows reduce energy costs? “By installing film, you are not allowing 100% of the cold air to penetrate through the glass surface, reducing heating costs. What does come through during the winter is trapped, which keeps the heat inside your home”. Talk a little bit about how your product provides protection from the sun? “This is the latest, nanotechnology film that is applied to the

interior of the existing glass, which insulates homes both summer and winter. It protects you and your home from harmful UV rays”. How much does it cost? “Pricing is job specific. Call or email us to receive a FREE estimate. We run several pricing incentives throughout the year...We have one going on now!” What's involved in this instalplease see WINDOW, page 8

Exercise: An Effective Defense Against Winter Depression

F

or millions of Americans, the shorter days of fall and winter lead to feelings of sadness and even depression, a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While light therapy has long been thought to provide some degree of relief, an increasing body of evidence suggests that exercise is one of the best defenses against seasonal depression. How Exercise Impacts the Brain According to research done by the Cleveland Clinic, regular exercise is a powerful way to fight seasonal depression, especially if you’re able to exercise outside in natural daylight. Exercise can boost serotonin, endorphins, and other feel-good chemicals in the brain which can make problems seem more manageable. According to Psychology Today, the simple act of focusing on exercise can give us a break from current concerns and damaging self-talk. In fact, evidence suggests that exercise is not only necessary for the maintenance of good men-

tal health, but it can be used to treat even chronic mental illness. Evidence suggests that exercise reduces the likelihood of depression and also maintains mental health as we age. Exercising with a friend or a personal trainer is preferable to exercising alone for someone with SAD. The social interaction is therapeutic. What Types of Exercise Are Best? Experts say that three or more sessions per week of aerobic exercise or resistance training, for 45 to 60 minutes per session, can help treat even chronic depression. While any form of exercise can help, some exercises are better suited to treating SAD. Any low-impact aerobic activities, including walking and dancing, are recommended. Other activities include: • Gentle stretching • Yoga • Tai chi • Swimming • Running • Strength training If you or a loved one would

Retirees Get a Raise as Inflation Persists

F

irst the good news: Retirees will get a generous increase in their Social Security checks come January 2022. Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will increase by a whopping 5.9% in 2022, the biggest increase in 40 years.1 That means that the average monthly retirement benefit of $1,565 will grow to $1,657. Although Social Security accounts for only about 30% of overall retirement income, millions of retirees -- over 10% -- rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income. So the increase will be more than welcome for many. The bad news is that the boost only adds to an already disturbing inflation picture.

Rates have moderated since summer, but they remain stubbornly high. Prices for cars, fuel, rent, meat, and other groceries are noticeably higher, and many families are feeling the pinch. Bottlenecks, Shortages, and Stimulus The root cause of the rising prices is of course Covid. The pandemic has caused major disruptions in supply chains across the globe. From microchips to lumber, supply bottlenecks have led to shortages and price increases. Labor shortages have exacerbated the situation, particularly in leisure and hospitality businesses, resulting in wage increases -- many long overdue. Add to this the

Street, or on Main Street, so the Fed will likely proceed very cautiously. What You Can Do In the face of rising prices, consumers do not have many options. You can be more selective in your purchases, charge more for your services if you’re self-employed, or try to convince your employer to raise your salary to compensate. But in the end, if food, rent, and fuel cost more, you have to pay more. For investors, the key to staying ahead of inflation is to seek investments that have the potential to deliver higher returns. Historically, stocks have shown the greatest ability to outpace inflation over time, although past performance is no guarantee of future results. There are also inflation-indexed bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury, but they generally make sense only if you expect a major uptick in inflation. Talk to your financial professional to see what investing strategy might best suit your circumstances in an inflationary or rising rate environment. massive government stimulus packages passed since the spring of 2020, and you have the perfect inflationary storm. The big question is: will it persist? Are we headed toward a 70s-style inflation cycle? Six months ago, the consensus answer to this question was an emphatic no. The uptick was widely expected to be shortlived, basically just a rebound from the price drops at the outset of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. Since then, however, supply chain problems have festered and structural issues such as labor shortages have surfaced. What’s more, the price of oil has more than doubled over the past year, up 35% in just the past two months. Although most economists still believe that inflation will moderate in the coming months, many are less certain in their outlook. There is also the matter of the huge infrastructure and spending bills which will add to inflationary pressures. For its part, the Federal Reserve is increasingly concerned that supply disruptions could last long enough to prompt consumers and businesses to expect higher prices, setting off an upward spiral of wage and cost increases. It has already signaled a slowdown in bond purchases, and could start raising interest rates if the inflation numbers remain elevated. But raising rates is not a popular move in Washington, on Wall

inter is settling in for the duration, the pandemic is still with us, and darkness is still falling early. While it’s tempting to succumb to the notion of just hunkering down to await the spring equinox, don’t. There is a simple antidote to the winter doldrums – make time for fun, interact with others, and engage in activities that keep our brain neurons firing. Playing games is the answer and Game Friendzy is here to help with weekly gaming sessions for bridge, mah jongg, canasta, and pinochle, some in-person, some online. All are welcome! “Games reduce stress, provide relaxation, sharpen your brain function, and foster social interactions,” says says Game Friendzy owner Bernadette Hennessy May. ”All of which are crucial to surviving the long, isolating winter months. And playing games is just plain fun!” In-person play for all four games takes place in Game Friendzy’s temporary location – a suite of private rooms at the Conservatory of Musical Arts, 57 E. Kings Highway, Audubon. Bridge and pinochle are played weekly on Thursdays and mah jongg and canasta on Fridays. All sessions run 10 am-12 pm;

However, a few things you need to be aware of are that the CPI might not accurately match the general inflation rate; therefore, the principal balance on TIPS may not keep pace with the actual rate of inflation. The real interest yields on TIPS may rise, especially if there is a sharp spike in interest rates. If so, the rate of return on TIPS could lag behind other types of inflation-protected securities, like floating rate notes and T-bills. TIPs do not pay the inflation-adjusted balance until maturity, and the accrued principal on TIPS could decline, if there is deflation. ■
