ediscovering games during the pandemic has been a highlight in many of our lives. Connecting online and playing games together allow us to feel closer to our loved ones and to meet new people. Playing games like Bridge and Mah Jongg creates shared common ground and eliminates boundaries between people with different beliefs or backgrounds. Bridge and Mah Jongg help relieve stress and sharpen your mind. A 2019 study revealed that people ages 45+ playing Mah Jongg were more likely to have a decline in depression. In 2021 the BAMSA (Bridge: A Mind Sport for All) International Conference showed that playing Bridge improves mood and reduces stress. Strengthening communication and teamwork skills: Communication is key in both Bridge and Mah Jongg. Teamwork and communication

are inherent in playing both Bridge and Mah Jongg through the nature of the games: bidding for trump and working with a partner to win tricks, or dealing the tiles and calling Mah Jongg to win the game. Maintaining mental sharpness: Research shows Bridge players aged 55-91 have better memory and reasoning skills than nonplayers. A 2003 study found that playing board games and card games has been associated with higher cognitive performance and a lower risk of dementia. Boosting immunity: In 2000, a founder of modern neuroscience, Dr. Marian Diamond, showed that playing Bridge stimulates the thymus gland, which produces white blood cells, thus enhancing the immune system. Game Friendzy offers online and in-person Bridge and Mah Jongg “We are now hybrid for

Bridge, Mah Jongg, Pinochle & Canasta.” says owner Bernadette Hennessy May. “We’re excited to have re-opened our doors in Audubon as we transition to our new permanent location!” Players can participate and

oo much screen time over the past decade and its residual effects on young people have been exacerbated by the pandemic response of “educating by isolating.” Relegated to their bedrooms, basements, kitchens, and college

dorms, most socially distanced students were FORCED to stare at their screens from March 2020 until May/June 2021. This extended time of keeping students from physically interacting with peers and teachers has resulted in a mental health cri-

sis we will be feeling for a very long time. After 15 months of semi-seclusion, missed social opportunities, and frayed friendships, young people were acting out: antisocial behaviors, fights, emotional breakdowns, defiance, anxiety, and depression. Summer camps, however, offered an oasis of sorts- a reset, an antidote, a social-emotional vaccine. Campers, staff, and even school teachers had a magical and energizing experience being outside, socializing, playing, and interacting again! The past two summers affirmed unequivocally that there’s no better place for children and young adults to learn and regain their social and emotional equilibrium than at Summer Camp. Here’s what we observed: • Kids bounce back. Kids are resilient. They roll with the punches, learn from their mistakes, and when the bar is set

INNOVATIVE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN FROM 6 WEEKS TO 6 YEARS OLD

high, with the right encouragement- they rise to the occasion! • Kids naturally make friends. Thousands of new campers arrived at camps the past two summers, and it was amazing to see how they were drawn towards one another; quickly building friendships, with their saved up love and empathy. • Kids love being outdoors. Always have. But after being forced indoors for so long, kids cared less about the bugs, the dirt and mud, the liquid sunshine, and even the heat! At Liberty Lake, we embrace the opportunity to jump into a lake, just like kids have done for thousands of years! • Kids don’t need screens to enjoy themselves. Liberty Lake has been a screen-free haven since day one in 2002, from drop-off to pick-up. You’d think that after so much screen time, that kids would be jonesing for their phones/tablets/TVs… Nope. Playing outside with their friends is WAY more engaging. Older campers and staff actually THANK US for providing an electronic-free, stressfree utopia! And there’s more good news.

Thousands of parents who never went to camp, and never sent their children to camp before, have reassessed the summer camp cost/benefit analysis and are flooding American Camp Association accredited camps with registrations like never before. The pandemic has suddenly made Summer Camp as important as it should be. So if you’re interested in Camp for your kids this summer, don’t delay- because many of the best camps out there have already started waiting lists! Liberty Lake Day Camp Open House Dates for 2022 Sunday, 1/29/22 and Saturdays, 2/26/22, 3/26/22, 4/23/22 Come out to see the grounds, meet our staff, and learn about our programs. JB Bakery, where everything is always Just Baked, and people are always smiling

J

B Bakery began as a bagel and bread shop in 1952. Over time, ownership passed from family to family, and the product line increased. Fifteen years ago, Burlington native Stephen Simon purchased JB and made it what it is today: a local landmark and dessert lover’s paradise that is regularly voted one of Burlington County’s best bakeries. Originally, JB stood for “John’s Burlington Bakery”, the bakery’s founders, Mr. Simon sees it as “Always Just Baked” because it operates 24 hours a day to produce freshbaked products. At JB, professional bakers and pastry chefs employ traditional methods to perfect the art of dessert making. They use scratch mixes and high-quality ingredients free of preservatives and imitation flavors, with the human element involved from creation to

consumption. The bakery offers hard-to-find specialties from all over the world, holiday delicacies, seasonal specials, fresh bread and rolls, a coffee bar, and exceptional service. The chefs design custom cakes for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Sweet 16s, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, holidays, reunions, and many other occasions; by establishing relationships with customers and listening to their ideas, JB’s all-star staff turns cake dreams into reality. Through the years, JB has become a Burlington County landmark. It is annually featured in the local news, and people visit from out-of-state to tour the facility and taste the sweets. Guests cherish walking in and experiencing the rich aroma that is unique to real, old-fashioned bakeries. A few years ago, JB gained fame for introducing its ever-popular

“Whale Cookie,” a sugary delight inspired by the brave beluga that swam the Delaware River. The bakery was especially honored to host Food Network Chef Robert Irvine for an episode of Dinner Impossible, entitled “Nightshift: Impossible”, during which Irvine used

JB’s old-world techniques and machinery to pull a culinary all-nighter. Above all, JB is a family bakery and a part of the local community. Generations have come to regard it as “their” bakery, and it is common for people who grew up with JB

birthday cakes to feature JB at their weddings as well. It is the official bakery of Burlington’s Wood Street Fair and supports other local events such as Festival of Lights, Bike Night, and the car show. JB frequently makes gift and product donations to local organizations and fundraising efforts, and it creates jobs for community members. ow, more than ever, Spring is the time for students to not only learn, but to catch up. We all know that the last couple of school years have been less than ideal. If you think about it, the last time today’s fourth graders had a “regular” year in school was in FIRST GRADE!!! These formative years are when a student goes from learning to read to reading to learn. Having intermittent in person instruction since the 20182019 school year has caused many students to fall behind. Since this year’s teacher must complete the curriculum for the current grade, there is less opportunity to catch up who is behind.

CALLING ALL STUDENT-ATHLETES IN SOUTH JERSEY

WE CHALLENGE YOU TO JOIN US IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER!!

here are many ways for families to express and feel the joys of Jewish living. Throughout the year, our students have opportunities to participate in hands-on Jewish experiences with their families, applying the skills they have gained with the curriculum in our classrooms. Moments of religious celebration help form relationships that will engage families in our community, as we work to help families discover meaning and purpose in how they educate children at TBS. TBS families feel the joys of Jewish living as they have the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat several times a month on Saturday mornings and Friday evenings in dynamic services that are upbeat and musical. Prayer, especially on Shabbat, needs to be exciting, engaging, spiritual and fun. TBS’s inclusive Family Services provide a welcoming environment which nurtures children with special needs and their families. Visual signs and prompts, gesturing, movement, and a sequenced schedule to ease transitioning throughout the service are incorporated to accommodate a wide range of students’ unique learning styles. Together in this family-friendly setting, we sing, debate, experience drama, stories, laugh and enjoy our warm

community in a relaxed environment. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living as they gain appreciation and feel the rhythm of Jewish music making joyful noise with the TBS community. These beautiful moments are found singing with Cantor Cohen, listening to the sounds of Alex Weinberg’s guitar, or singing together with Rabbi Peltz and Rabbi Wexler at Family Shabbat Dinners. Parents stand with their child while singing blessings and songs as they experience the warm connection that Shabbat creates as a community. Our families discover the tools they need to feel part of community life at TBS through learning that integrates student experiences in the classroom with the immersion that can only happen together as a family. From praying and making music to Shabbat dinners and family-centered programs, learning is a lifelong process. We look forward to partnering with you on that journey as we nurture our children to grow up loving Jewish living.
