ur Funeral Home built in 1896, is located at 58 N. Main Street in the Historic Village of Medford, New Jersey. In 1956, Art and Kathy Mathis purchased and converted this residence into The Mathis Funeral Home, which has now served the community for over 60 years. In 1993, Art Mathis passed away and his daughter Kathy became licensed and continued her family’s legacy serving each family as if it were her own. In 1993, Kathy began extensive renovations to the funeral home to make it handicap accessible, and add on to their already spacious chapel. There are three

decisions? The arrangements you make will reflect your exact wishes and desires. Pre-arranging your own service will help to ease the burden of your loved ones. It will also alleviate any questions, problems or differences, which can occur among family members. Pre-payment will protect you from the rising cost of prices, and it will not be a financial burden on your loved ones. When you plan ahead you know that your wishes will be fulfilled. NM-00492598

couragement, support and advice through the grieving process. • Remembrance memorials: You can organize a memorial or many organizations (churches, hospices, etc.) hold community remembrance/ memorial services throughout the year on special occasions like during the holiday seasons. This is done to honor those lost throughout the year and to help families remember their loved ones. At Bradley Funeral Home, we have resources and a local grief support list. If you are interested in what is available, please contact us (856)983-1005 or info@BradleyFHMarlton. com. There are also many online forums which provide grief support. You can search them on the web. It is important to remember, you are not alone in your grief. There are people walking the same path as you. Tips From South Jersey Window Tinting

nstalling films on the interior windows of your home may not be at the top of your home-makeover “to-do” list, but South Jersey Window Tinting has several good reasons why homeowners should consider this a priority. South Jersey Window Tinting believes in the, “Block the Sun, Not the View” concept. As one of the area's largest contractors of window films, South Jersey Window Tinting has more than three decades of experience and knowledge in the importance of Window Film. Here are some tips why window tinting is essential: Why should people seriously consider investing in window tinting for their home? “Window film is great for heat and glare reduction, while also preventing the fading of furniture, paintings, wallpaper, etc. We also offer safety film to protect from glass breakage and intruders.”

How does putting film on the windows reduce energy costs? “By installing window film, you provide your windows with an extra layer of protection. Window film insulates glass surfaces, which reduces heating costs in the Winter and cooling costs in the Summer.” Talk a little bit about how your product provides protection from the sun? “This is the latest nanotechnology film that is applied to the interior of the existing glass, which protects you and your home from harmful UV Rays”. How much does it cost? “Pricing is job specific. Call or email us to receive a FREE estimate. We run several pricing incentives throughout the year...We have one going on now!” What's involved in this installation? “Jobs vary from one to the next. Our experienced installers will go over everything with

you from start to finish”. With most people spending more time at home, dealing with excessive glare and the need for privacy has become a priority. Ask the experts at South Jersey Window Tinting for suggestions! Thinking about Auto Tinting? Our products block out 99.9% of UV rays to improve skin health and privacy. Our films are approved by the

American Cancer Society. We are South Jersey’s #1 Auto Tinting company since 1985! Concerned about break-ins in our communities? Turn burglary into attempted burglary with Clear Safety Film that can be applied to your existing windows! Safety film strengthens your glass and will hold glass together in the event of an impact. The Evergreens comes to Life

bby Stewart almost always finds residents waiting to greet her when she visits The Evergreens. As Director of Design for Acts Retirement Life Communities, she’s been charged with guiding a series of exciting new renovations at the historic Moorestown campus. That sociability and the community’s dedication to celebrating the best of life is an ethos Abby and her team look to reflect in some of the biggest changes coming to The Evergreens. The scenic 32-acre community features expansive outdoor spaces, including a 9-hole putting green, maintenance-free living, and a wide array of superb amenities and activities enjoyed by the vibrant, active residents that live there. “The renovations will create a revitalized hub on campus and provide residents with more energized and accessible spaces,” says Abby. “The improved clubhouse will have an expanded lobby and entrance area, including a new Bistro and coffee shop with grab-andgo options.” Renovations in the main clubhouse also include a Life Enrichment Center with a health care suite, expanded fitness room with personalized

wellness, spa, salon, movie theater and family fun room, and more. “Given its history, celebrating and preserving The Evergreens’ past while increasing the comforts of the present is a key priority,” says Abby. Alongside new changes, The Evergreens continues to offer the worry-free, resort-like lifestyle it has long been known for. Understanding Advance Health Care Directives

The Animal Hospital of Somerdale

An Attorney's Perspective

Dr. Sheila Maier

dvance Health Care Directives or AHCDs are often mistakenly called "Living Wills." However, a Living Will only addresses end of life decisions. The AHCDs we prepare cover every kind of medical situation, including end of life decisions. In that sense, our AHCD is actually two documents in one. All competent adults have the right to make their own medical decisions, including decisions to stop treatment that will only prolong the patient's agony. But what if you cannot speak for yourself? Who has the legal authority to make medical decisions for you? Your spouse? Perhaps. But suppose your spouse is no longer around. Can your children make these decisions? Definite-

ly not. And, how would they know what you want? This is where the AHCD comes in. If you want your wishes to be honored, you must plan in advance. An Advance Health Care Directive or AHCD is your written statement of the type of medical care you want to receive, or not receive, under the circumstances at that time. Our AHCD is "state-of-theart" and lets you designate the person you trust most, who understands your health care wishes best, and honor your wishes as your health care representative. Beware of medical powers of attorney from stationery stores, discount supply houses and bookstores! They are not prepared by an experienced, NJ estate planning attorney, and may not be honored

when needed most. An AHCD is only one of the four documents we craft for all of our clients. We routinely provide a Last Will and Testament, Power of Attorney, AHCD, and a HIPAA Release as part of our Essential Will Package. (The HIPAA Release lets your health care providers share otherwise protected information with those closest to you.) If you have younger children, we typically include a trust for them at no additional charge. Please read our reviews, check out our fees, and learn much more about essential estate planning documents, Probate, FSBO real estate transactions, quitclaim deeds and other interesting legal topics by visiting our free educational website at www.WoodendLaw.com. ■

Viking Casual Furniture

ince 1955, Viking Casual Furniture has been Delaware Valley’s premier source of quality patio furniture, dinettes, wicker furniture, mattresses, bars and barstools. Always prepared for the latest trends, Viking is ready to update your backyard this spring with 2022’s most in-demand outdoor furniture and accessories. Last year’s trends saw intimate and cozy backyard areas furnished with conversation fire pits. This year, those spaces are growing larger and becoming outdoor rooms. Complete with sectional sofas surrounding fire pits, these rooms are tied together with complementing weatherproof rugs and throw pillows. Dining al fresco will once again remain a standard favorite, which means comfortable yet functional tables and chairs within close proximity to the BBQ grill are a must. Companies such as North Cape, DWL Garden Furniture, Telescope Casual, Kingsley Bate and Tropitone (all lines carried by Viking) are filling the demand for all your outdoor furniture needs by providing a variety of styles that are dura-

ble, weather-resistant, comfortable and casual. North Cape specializes in high-quality all-weather wicker furniture with thick cushioning in a full spectrum of colors. DWL Garden Furniture is famous for its classic lines and durable cast-aluminum frames. And Tropitone brings you sleek styles with plush seating in a contemporary look. If you feel you’re fully furnished, you can still freshen up your outdoor spaces with current trending colors. The bold, bright tones from 2021 are being replaced this year with softer, slightly muted colors. Buttery hues are supplementing lemon yellow, lime green is being taken over by avocado, and those brilliant reds are tempered down into rust or gray tones. All furniture from Viking comes fully assembled and they offer hassle-free delivery throughout the Midlantic Region, including down the shore. As an added bonus, if you hurry in now, you’ll be able to take advantage of some special pre-season pricing. Visit us at 123 E. Main St. in Maple Shade. ■

FIVE Empowering Investment Strategies for Women

N

o two paths to investing and retirement are the same, and that’s especially true for women. While many women choose to get married and/or have children, others choose to chart their own course, independent of a traditional family structure. Examine your life as it is now and compare it to what you want for the future. This will help you prioritize what’s important to you, and how you envision your eventual retirement. Do you see yourself relaxing with friends and family? Or are you starting a small business and traveling the world? A conversation between you and a trusted financial professional can help you examine the challenges ahead and form your strategy. Regardless of your vision, there are a few concepts that may help your investment strategy. Strategy #1: Develop a Strategy Developing a financial strategy can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Think about how you envision your ideal future. Do you have debt you want to pay off, a home you’d like to buy, or higher education you want to fund for yourself or a loved one? Prioritize your goals, and start building your savings strategy from there. Strategy #2: Get Started Regardless of your financial

situation, one of the best things you can do for your future self is to start moving toward your goals today. Get in the habit of paying yourself first, and make investing part of each paycheck a consistent habit (automatic withdrawals are great for this). Even if you start small, you can always increase your contributions as your financial situation changes. Every little bit helps. Thanks to the magic of compound interest, time is one of the best assets you have when investing. Being conservative with your accounts may seem less risky, but it can do more damage in the long run. Strategy #3: Invest like a Woman It’s a common misconception that women prefer a “handsoff” approach to their financial lives, even though the numbers don’t support this stereotype. Rather than being timid with money, today’s women investors are taking appropriate levels of risk. Women may trade less than men, but research shows that when it comes to investing, men tend to be overconfident in their abilities. Specifically, men trade 45% more than women, and this tends to reduce their overall net returns (an effect that is compounded by the higher taxes, commissions, and fees that may result from trading).1 What does it mean to invest like a woman? It means taking

healthy, age-based risks and investing regularly for the long term. Work closely with your financial professional before diving into something that may look enticing but may ultimately detract from your goals. Investing involves risks, and investment decisions should be based on your own goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. The return and principal value of investments will fluctuate as market conditions change. When sold, investments may be worth more or less than their original cost. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Strategy #4: Build a Team Confident investors are only as strong as the support team around them. Wise advice from a trusted professional can save you time and keep you on track to achieve your investment and retirement goals. Regular check-ins can help you adjust your strategy, especially if there’s been a change to your goals, dreams, and/or life situation. By extension, a wider support team comprised of estate, tax, and legal professionals can work in conjunction with your financial professional to help you pursue the financial future you have in mind, no matter what life throws your way. Strategy #5: Never Stop Learning It’s never too late to become an empowered and engaged investor. Adopt the mindset of a

Their specialties include psychiatry, addictions, abuse liability, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), gastroenterology, orthopedics, pain management, and obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN). With the help of referrals from the five multi-speciality practices a database of over 70,000 subjects has been developed over the years. HRI conducts a full complement of inpatient and outpatient Phase I-V research trials and focuses on special populations including the elderly, patients facing addiction, and patients with psychiatric, neurological, and medical disorders. as well as help them to implement strategies to overcome these challenges. We take pride not only in our therapeutic experience, but also in our commitment to building long-term partnerships. HRI offers an outstanding team of experts who oversee the setup and conduct of each clinical study. Dr. Larry Ereshefsky is an internationally recognized thought leader in clinical translational central nervous system research. HRI plays an active role in the community by providing care options to those interested in clinical trials.

Exercise: Your Best Natural Defense Against Arthritis By Faith Ritter

CPT & Vice President of BeneFit Personal Training

I

f you suffer from arthritis, exercise may be the last thing you want to think about. However, the Arthritis Foundation, says physical activity is the best, non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement in arthritis patients. In fact, research suggests that incorporating one or more of the following activities into your regime may not only help relieve pain, but could help prevent arthritis altogether. Walking According to Harvard Health, several studies have found that walking reduces arthritis-related pain, and walking five to six miles a week can even prevent arthritis from forming in the first place. Walking protects the joints by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them. Range of Motion Exercises Some examples of ROM exercises include lifting your arms over your head or sitting and reaching toward your toes. Doing these types of movements regularly can help improve

your flexibility and the health of your joints overall. Aerobic Exercise Aerobic training improves circulation, lowers blood pressure and strengthens your heart. Walking in particular lowers the risk of fractures, and tones muscles that support joints. Aerobic exercises such as swimming and bike riding are easy on your joints and help build stamina. Strength Training Seniors can dramatically improve their muscle tone and bone density by including resistance training into their fitness program. Strong muscles can support and protect joints that are affected by arthritis. Tai Chi or Yoga Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese practice that features sets of slow, flowing movements and regular breathing. Many seniors have found relief from joint stiffness and improved their strength and balance. If arthritis or any physical limitation is getting in the way of you being as active as you want to be, call BeneFit Personal Training today at 888-3238677 to learn more about our in-home fitness program for seniors. ■

Powerful Play We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing. ~George Bernard Shaw

T

ake a break, play a game, help relieve your stress and anxiety. In our hustle and bustle world we need a way to re-energize. I find that taking the time to play a quick game of solitaire distracts me, helps me relax and enables me to get back to the task at hand. Studies are showing that taking a short break in the day to play a game (online or in person) can help relieve stress and help refocus our attention. What is your favorite game? For me, the answer is not as simple as you would think. My favorite game depends on my mood and company. When I need a quick break, I usually hop on my phone and play a quick game from a downloaded app. More often, however, I want to feel the cards or the

game pieces, roll the dice, and get lost in the game. When the game ends, whether I won or lost, as long as it was a fair, friendly, and challenging competition, just playing the game makes me feel better. Another invigorating aspect of playing games with people is learning different variations of games, especially the more common games, such as, canasta, pinochle, and gin rummy. It seems as though every time I meet someone new and we begin to play one of those games,we inevitably run into a place where we play different variations. Learning new variations is always invigorating. The knowledge that games are good for you is something that we have known for a long time. Research is catching up and beginning to demonstrate that games are good for us. Studies have shown that people who regularly play games have lower incidence

of depression, and anxiety, as well as increased patience, and good sportsmanship. A study in France followed over 1000 people for a period of 20 years. Researchers found that the incidence of dementia was lower in the game playing population. What does this all mean? Give yourself a break. Play games! See you at the tables!
