I
t has been more than 30 years since brothers Andrew and Jimmy DePiano made the bold move to start their own company, and A&J Flooring Outlet continues to set the standard in the industry
It may not have been so obvious in the moment, but looking back now it becomes crystal clear: 1989 was a turning point in the lives of the DePiano brothers. Working at the time for an established flooring company— where Jimmy ran the day-today operations and younger sibling Andrew was an experienced installer—they easily could have been content to stay the course and likely would have carved out long, successful careers in the industry. But they had loftier goals in mind. “You have to be a leader, not a follower. That’s true in life as well as in business,” Jimmy DePiano says. “If you show me a follower, I’ll show you a fail-

ure.” Armed with that mantra, and the belief that they could offer customers the vast knowledge, affordable prices and pleasant experience they deserved, the brothers confidently took the leap to venture out on their own and founded A&J Flooring Outlet. More than three decades later, the company continues to set the benchmark for quality in carpet, hardwood flooring and much more. About 10 years ago, the company also branched out into kitchen and bath remodeling to meet the high demand for these services. NJISA: Promoting Successful Aging
R
owan Medicine’s New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA) has, since 1989, provided medical care for older individuals throughout South Jersey while also offering training for health professionals so that they, too, can help the growing number of New Jersey’s older adults as they age successfully. A primary care partnership Primary care at the NJISA involves the patient, the family or caregiver, the health care provider and the community to address the majority of the patient’s health care needs. NJISA primary care physicians are specially trained in caring for older persons through symptom identification, monitoring and medication management, including referrals to specialists as the need arises. The NJISA’s Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Program involves an in-depth assessment for those who are in good health, as well as those with
complex health problems and chronic medical conditions. For those enrolled in Medicare Part B, the NJISA offers Medicare’s popular Welcome to Medicare preventive visit and Medicare’s Annual Wellness visits. Geriatric Specialty Care The NJISA also offers specialized geriatrics consultations, sending the findings to the patient’s primary care physician. Among those services: • The Memory Assessment Program is a specialized diagnostic program for patients who experience problems with memory, language, planning, and carrying out basic daily activities. A team of NJISA physicians, neuropsychologists, and clinical social workers provide a comprehensive assessment on the patient’s physical and medical conditions, thinking and memory, mood, functional abilities, and social supports. • Neuropsychological Testing looks beyond basic func-
tional losses with testing that identifies specific areas of the brain that have been affected, assisting the patient’s primary care doctor in recommending approaches that may overcome or compensate for any deficits. House Calls Program NJISA physicians and nurse practitioners provide comprehensive health care on a routine or as-needed basis, including medical evaluation, ongoing medical care, medication management, routine laboratory testing, and caregiver support services. Patients who cannot leave their home without additional assistance, such as using a cane, walker or wheelchair, or requiring the use of special transportation are candidates for the NJISA House Calls Program.
