The most obvious benefits of pet ownership are love and companionship and the emotional benefits of having a pet can translate into physiological ones as well. Physical benefits of owning a pet can come from the activity necessary to take care of it, such as playing with the animal or taking it for a walk or run. There can also be social benefits of pet ownership when you meet people along the way with similar pets. As a local Realtor, and a huge animal lover myself, I never underestimate the importance of incorporating a pet’s needs into my client’s home search criteria. Whether it is a fenced in yard, quiet street, nearby parks, the layout of the house or plenty of land for farm animals to graze, pet needs are high in priority for many buyers. From childhood, I have had a variety of different animals to call my own. Fish, hamsters, crayfish, iguana and of course our family dogs. Today, my 14-year-old Yorkie named Diesel is everything to us! For 14 years he has given us unconditional love, laughter and so many great memories. He’s one of the most resilient dogs I’ve every encounter with serious health problems at age 2 and the
vet telling us he would not live past 8 years old. Today he may be completely blind, but he still loves to play, run and interact with us like he’s a puppy. While Pet ownership comes with some costs associated to their health and well-being as well as any “accidental” damage they may incur, in my opinion, having these animals in our lives is a positive experience all around!
