ith the holidays approaching, we wanted to share some tips for coping with your grief throughout the special days. Holidays can be the time when we gather with family and friends... and often sentimental times. If you're grieving, you may want to avoid the holidays. Sometimes we have to take the harder steps to move forward. Talking, Gathering and Remembering are things you can do which will help you on your grief journey. TALK - talking about the person who died is good. No one wants to be forgotten. Sharing about him or her keeps their memory alive. It may bring tears but inevitably it will also
bring smiles. Sometimes, you may not be able to talk about them. If you cannot, write down your feelings. Find an outlet to share your thoughts. Do not keep them inside. GATHER - be around people even if it is for a short period of time. You may not feel like being present or you may be partially present. Explain that with those around you. It is appropriate to voice that it is a difficult time. People do understand. If they do not, they will try. Death is an inevitable part of life; everyone will experience it. Most times, people may not know what to say to you. Be ready for that. REMEMBER - we never forget the ones who die. Do not
Medford United Methodist Church, a history of adapting to change
E
ver since the Methodist Church became a part of the Medford Community in the early 1800’s, changing to meet the needs of the community has been an enduring theme. As the congregation outgrew its ability to meet in homes, a log cabin became its home in 1821. Again, to accommodate growing numbers, a proper church building was constructed in 1824. As Medford expanded geographically, the Methodist Church followed suit and built its current home on Hartford
Road in 1972. Continued growth led to construction of an education wing, and most recently, a Family Life Center. But Medford United Methodist Church does not simply grow larger, it grows deeper roots in the local community as well. As young families moved to Medford, the church responded by creating a pre-school program that has continued to thrive for 47 years, serving multiple generations of Medford township. The 2017 addition of a Family Life Center affords not

think of it as 'never forgetting'; think of it as remembering. Remembering the person, the emotions, the feelings, the life. Remember where they sat, hang an ornament or stocking for them, light a candle, mention their name around the table, toast their life, etc. At some point, we all learn to live in our loss. Eventually, we will not be sad or cry every hour of the day or even every day. Our loss becomes part of our story. A story we can share so others know they can survive too. only increased worship space, but it also enables the church to open its doors to host regular meetings and special events for area organizations. MYAA Cheerleaders have practiced here, the Pinelands Players have practiced and performed, elections are held, the Red Cross holds blood drives, etc. Offering more than building space, Medford United Methodist Church ministers to the community, welcoming and valuing all. MUMC is proud of the strong United Methodist tradition of advocating for social justice. In 2020, MUMC pledged to stand with the LGBTQ+ community by becoming a part of the Reconciling Ministries Network. Several of the church programs work with food insecurity issues and homelessness. Further adapting to change, during the continuing COVID19 pandemic, the church transformed its concern for the health and safety of its people into an online video ministry with a reach well beyond New Jersey. Tips From South Jersey Window Tinting
I
nstalling films on the interior windows of your home may not be at the top of your home-makeover “to-do” list, but South Jersey Window Tinting has several good reasons why homeowners should consider this a priority. South Jersey Window Tinting believes in, “Block the Sun, Not the View” concept. As one of the area's largest contractors of window films, South Jersey Window Tinting has more than three decades of experience and knowledge in the importance of Window Film. Here are some tips why window tinting is essential: Why should people seriously consider investing in window tinting for their home? “For heat, glare, fading of flooring, furniture, paintings, wallpaper, etc. We also offer safety film to protect from glass
breakage and intruders”. How does putting film on the windows reduce energy costs? “By installing film, you are not allowing 100% of the cold air to penetrate through the glass surface, reducing heating costs. What does come through during the winter is trapped, which keeps the heat inside your home”. Talk a little bit about how your product provides protection from the sun? “This is the latest, nanotechnology film that is applied to the interior of the existing glass, which insulates homes both summer and winter. It protects you and your home from harmful UV rays”. How much does it cost? “Pricing is job specific. Call or email us to receive a FREE estimate. We run several pricing incentives throughout the

With most people spending more time at home, dealing with excessive glare and the need for privacy has become a priority. Ask the experts at South Jersey Window Tinting for suggestions! Thinking about Auto Tinting? Our products block out 99.9% of UV rays to improve safety and privacy. Our films are approved by the American Cancer Society. T
he all too common expression, “going downhill” has become ingrained into the American psyche, so much so that many seniors believe that becoming frail and decrepit is a natural part of the aging process. However, the research suggests otherwise. What The Experts Are Saying While the body does change over time, many of the symptoms that we associate with old age -- such as weakness, loss of balance and frailty-- are actually symptoms of inactivity not age, says Alicia I. Arbaje, MD, MPH, assistant professor of Geriatrics and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. We all learned in physics class that an object at rest, stays at rest and an object in motion, stays in motion. Motion, or exercise in this instance, plays a vital role in maintaining your strength, mobility and vitality as you age. It’s no coincidence that seniors such as Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Suzanne Somers are enjoying healthy, active lifestyles well into their 60’s and 70s. What they all have in common is a shared belief in the power and importance of exercise in achieving longevity, health and lifelong wellness. Exercise: Your Fountain of Youth

Exercise can help make you stronger, prevent bone loss, improve balance and coordination, lift your mood, and lower your risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Recent studies released by the Alzheimer’s Association suggest that exercise can even boost memory and help prevent dementia by increasing blood and oxygen flow in the brain. While there is no actual fountain of youth, exercise is without question, an effective way for seniors to maintain their health as they age and in many cases can reverse the health issues brought on by a sedentary lifestyle. No hype here -- experts credit game play with reducing stress, providing relaxation, sharpening brain function, forging social interactions, and improving coordination and dexterity (holding a fistful of cards, moving pieces on a game board, etc.). With benefits like these, helpful to all but most especially to seniors, what are you waiting for? Join in any of the weekly gaming sessions Game Friendzy hosts for bridge, mah jongg, canasta, and pinochle, some in-person, some online. All are welcome! "Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw once said, ‘We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because
we stop playing,’” says Game Friendzy owner Bernadette Hennessy May. “I’d say that’s another great reason to play games!” In-person play for all four games takes place in private rooms at the Conservatory of Musical Arts, 57 E. Kings Highway, Audubon. Bridge and pinochle are played on alternating Thursdays and mah jongg and canasta every Friday. All sessions run 10 am-12 pm; the fee is $8/person. No reservations are necessary. Come alone or with a partner; tables are formed as players arrive. As per current federal and New Jersey health guidelines, masks are required. Game Friendzy also offers virtual playing -- and learning -- options for the ever popular, ever challenging game of bridge please see GAMES, page 16

Medicare and Your Social Security Benefits Social Security benefits. But for those of you who have not filed yet, here is some insight so you won’t be as surprised if and when your Social Security deposits are perhaps a bit less than you were expecting. How Do You Pay for Medicare? As you likely know, Medicare Part A, which covers hospitalization, is provided at no cost once you are eligible. However, with Medicare Part B, the portion of Medicare that provides standard health insurance, you will pay a standard premium for this coverage, which is currently $148.50/month in 2021. • If you enroll in Medicare Part B BEFORE collecting So-

cial Security, your premiums will be billed quarterly by Medicare. • If you enroll in Medicare Part B and are also collecting Social Security, your premiums will be automatically deducted from your monthly Social Security payments, reducing those payments. How Does Your Income Impact Your Medicare Premiums? As I mentioned above, the standard Part B premium amount in 2021 is $148.50/ month. This is true if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) was $176,000 or less (married filing jointly) or $88,000 or less (single). Most people pay this standard Part B premium amount. However, if your MAGI as reported on
your IRS tax return from two years ago was above those levels, you'll pay the standard premium amount PLUS an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). IRMAA is an extra charge added to your premium (Source: https://www. medicare.gov/your-medicarecosts/part-b-costs). The chart below outlines the current income thresholds which will cause these extra IRMAA charges to your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums: Medicare Premiums 2019 MAGI Single 2019 MAGI Married Filing Jointly Part B Premium Part D Income Adjustment $88,000 or less

hen looking at your Social Security Statement as you approach retirement, you will see the amount of monthly benefits you can expect to receive, depending on the age at which you plan to file for Social Security. However, what’s NOT listed on that statement are some factors that may reduce how much of that monthly benefit is actually deposited into your bank account each month, including the cost of your Medicare coverage in retirement. continued from page 12 $77.10 (Source: https://www.medicare.gov/your-medicare-costs/ part-b-costs). That First Year of Medicare Premiums Can Be Tricky! If your MAGI from when you were working pushes you into one of the higher Medicare premium brackets above, but your new income when you retire will be in a lower bracket, you’ll likely want to contact Social Security to file an appeal for the cost of your Medicare, to reduce any potential IRMAA charges. This is very common for high income earners in the first year of their retirement. You may also need to contact Social Security if you experience a life-changing event, other than retirement, that will have a significant impact on your future income compared to the prior year, such as a marriage, a divorce, death of a spouse, or other such event. Here’s a link to the Social Security form that you’ll likely need to complete with the assistance of your tax-advisor to report such an event: https://www. ssa.gov/forms/ssa-44-ext.pdf. Will Your Retirement Account Distributions Increase Your Medicare Premiums? For most of you when you first retire, your income may be significantly lower than it was when you were working full time. However, if you plan support yourself in retirement with your Social Security benefits and withdrawals from pre-tax retirement accounts, you need to be careful about how much you withdraw from those accounts each year, as this may have an unexpected impact on your Medicare premiums, and therefore your Social Security payments. Remember that withdrawals from your pre-tax retirement accounts are treated as income, so those withdrawals will be included in your MAGI as reported on your tax return. It’s important to note that taxexempt interest is also included in the MAGI calculation as well. If your MAGI is above those thresholds on the previous
chart, you’ll see your Medicare premiums go up accordingly, which will reduce your monthly Social Security payments. Lastly, remember that once you get to age 72, you MUST begin to take money out of your pre-tax retirement accounts in the form of Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s), even if you don’t need the income to live. And naturally those RMD’s will be included in your MAGI tax calculation and can therefore impact your Medicare premiums and Social Security payments as well. Plan Today to Minimize Taxes Tomorrow As you can see, many of the items discussed above are interconnected. The best way to potentially avoid extra costs for your Medicare premiums, and to reduce your taxes in retirement is to plan ahead. I strongly encourage you to review your retirement income strategy with your financial and tax advisors. This will help you and your trusted advisors to better understand the tax impact of your various sources of retirement income, and your investments, to explore what planning, if any, can be done to help minimize your taxes in retirement. And hopefully some thoughtful planning will help keep your Medicare premiums lower, and your Social Security benefits fully intact. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. We suggest that you discuss your specific situation with a qualified tax or legal advisor. ur Funeral Home built in 1896, is located at 58 N. Main Street in the Historic Village of Medford, New Jersey. In 1956, Art and Kathy Mathis purchased and converted this residence into The Mathis Funeral Home, which has now served the community for over 60 years. In 1993, Art Mathis passed away and his daughter Kathy became licensed and continued her family’s legacy serving each family as if it were her own. There are three public restrooms, a children’s area, coffee lounge, on site cas-

5 Strategies to Communicate With a Loved One with Dementia By: Jacquie Miller
Marketing and Sales Director, United Methodist Communities at Collingswood
I
t’s understandable to feel a little frustrated when it comes to communicating with a loved one who has dementia. We’ve put together some tips that we hope will help you keep the important lines of communication open and active: Research has shown that individuals with dementia respond positively to music. Try playing generation related music for your loved one! This provides a way to connect with loved ones who have dementia — especially those who have difficulty communicating. Try to avoid asking shortterm memory questions. People diagnosed with de-
mentia may have trouble recalling details from events that recently happened. For example, if you ask them what they had for dinner the night before, they may not be able to recall their meal or if they ate at all. Being unable to recall somewhat basic information can cause your loved one to become frustrated and agitated. Don’t correct them. They ask for sugar, but you know they meant to ask for salt instead. While it’s tempting to correct them, people with dementia often mix up common words or forget them altogether. Instead of saying “No, you need salt, not sugar” it’s best to ignore these small mix-ups. Try not to be alarmed by aggressive behavior. Dementia is a very difficult diagnosis and people with dementia often exhibit aggressive behavior when they don’t
recognize their environment or find they are unable to communicate what they truly want to say. Acting aggressively may be the only way they can express their frustration or discomfort, so pay extra attention to what’s frustrating them. Don’t patronize them or talk down to them. Your loved one is an adult who deserves care and respect, so talking down to them or using baby talk can make them feel insulted and patronized. It also won’t help them communicate more efficiently with you and may have the opposite effect. United Methodist Communities at Collingswood Tapestries® Memory Care Residence was designed and built to provide a safe haven for residents and bring peace of mind to families and friends. y name is Shane Gilbert and I am the owner of Shane’s Lawn Care Services LLC located in South Jersey. I currently reside in Palmyra with my wife and children. I was born and raised in Delran where the majority of my family originated. Being able to work in an area that is close to my roots, I have met some incredible families, some of which have connections to my father and grandfather! Hearing all of the wonderful things that people who knew them have to say, is very heartwarming. I have always enjoyed working in industries where I can connect and communicate with clients. Working in a home service industry gives me such joy that every day I get to go to work making clients happy and helping their landscaping dreams come to life. Before starting Shane’s Lawn Care Services, I was working multiple jobs with terrible hours, and was becoming frustrated with my career path. Like most people, I would have to find time to be able to tend to my own home and yard while still trying to balance my family and career. Landscaping and lawn care has always been something I have taken pride in. One night my wife suggested that I take all of the beautiful work that I do in our home, and start my own business. Without hesitation, I went to work on learning how to become a business owner. I have been in business for many years and we service the majority of South Jersey. My team and I offer weekly or biweekly lawn care, landscaping, full leaf service, full snow service, clean ups,and many other services year-round. When using our business, you will find that we pride ourselves in incorporating top of the line products in all of our projects, as well as a friendly and hardworking team that you can put your trust into. A Positive, Patient-Centered Approach to Memory Care “We don’t see a resident’s disability as their identity.” When it comes to caring for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, this statement by Joan DiPaola, a senior dementia specialist who leads CareOne’s memory care training program, sums up CareOne’s approach. CareOne’s dedicated memory units are ahead of the curve, providing hands-on training by seasoned dementia specialists to all employees; promoting a positive approach to care designed to enhance a patient’s quality of life; and engaging residents in activities that focus on what they can do, rather than what they can’t. While offering compassionate, patient-centered care, “it’s our job to ensure that those who have dementia, at any stage,
can still find beauty in every day,” DiPaola says. CareOne’s team of highlyseasoned dementia specialists (all with decades of experience) provide regular training to all employees—from the skilled nursing team to the hospitality staff—to ensure that all memory care patients receive consistent, patient-centered care. One key piece of the training: “Employees are taught to look at each resident as a person, rather than a diagnosis,” DiPaola says. Families are a key part of the puzzle, helping by creating a “life story” book featuring their loved one, so that CareOne staffers can get to know each resident personally from the moment they enter their new home. Much of CareOne’s training focuses on the “positive ap-
proach to care” philosophy, a series of techniques which include responding to a person’s change in cognition and abilities in a way that is not hurtful or offensive and recognizing that a person with dementia is doing the best they can. CareOne strives to ensure each resident spends time engaging in activities with peers who have similar cognitive skills. “We find more success meeting people at the level they’re at, rather than over- or under-challenging them,” DiPaola says. “When some people think of dementia, they think of decline,” she adds. “Instead of focusing on loss, we at CareOne concentrate on the positive. That’s what really sets us apart.” ■

Always prepared for the latest trends, Viking is ready to update your backyard this fall with 2021’s most in-demand outdoor furniture and accessories. The perfect setting for your family gatherings, pets included. Dining al fresco will once again remain a standard favorite, which means comfortable yet functional tables and chairs within close proximity to the BBQ grill are a must.
