Resources for Independent Living

ur Mission at Resources for Independent Living (R I L) is a community based member organization whose purpose is to serve people with disabilities. Our core services are Independent living skills training, information and referral, transition, peer support, and advocacy. Membership is open to all people with disabilities, their able-bodied friends, and supporters. We promote personal growth and empowerment through choice, self-determination and participating programs providing information, education, skills development, and networking opportunities. Resources for Independent Living provides people with disabilities the means for self-choice, self-direction, and self-reliance in an inclusive society that offers equal rights

and privileges to all. In addition to our core services, RIL provides case management services for individuals with disabilities for several programs: • Traumatic Brain Injury Fund for the NJ Division of Disability Services (NJDDS) for all seven southern counties • The Supports Program for the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities (NJDDD) for Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties • Adult Protective Services (APS) for Cumberland and Burlington Counties • Statewide Respite Program for Cumberland and Burlington Counties The TBI Fund provides New Jersey residents of any age, who have survived a traumatic brain injury, the opportunity to

access the brain injury related services and support they need to live in the community. The Fund fosters independence and maximizes quality of life when insurance, personal resources, or public programs are unavailable to meet those needs. A portion of the Fund also is used to support public education, outreach, and prevention activities related to TBI. The New Jersey Statewide Respite Care Program in Cumberland and Burlington Counties gives a short-term or periodic break to family (or other caregivers) from the demands of daily care for functionally impaired persons, including the frail elderly. This program provides respite care services in order to relieve caregivers of stress from providing daily care. This respite may be pro-

vided for a short time, or once in a while. For example, services could be provided to: Allow the caregiver to take a vacation, Cover care when a caregiver needs surgery or has an emergency and Give the caregiver time to take care of him/herself, run errands. Look Who’s Dancing

L

ook Who’s Dancing (LWD) is a unique, indeed revolutionary, Patent pending program designed to bring dance and exercise to populations often overlooked in the fitness industry. These include, but are not limited to people with physical, cognitive, behavioral, mental health, weight, and aging challenges. This amazing program is designed with the flexibility to adapt to the specific needs of each client and can be modified to fit the needs of any population. LWD’s mission is to preserve and improve the health and well-being of underserved populations through dance and exercise, in an atmosphere where fitness is fun. Our focus is on what our clients can achieve, not their limitations. We, Jean Anne Principato and Helene Lynch, the co-founders of this extraordinary company, are both nurses who have over 40 years combined nursing experience and fully understand the physical and cognitive capabilities of our clients. Jean Anne, our Creative Director, has been dancing and teaching professionally for most of her life. Almost daily, we receive testimonials and anecdotal evidence which supports our faith in this program, but our faith

was confirmed in an evaluation, conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing which found statistically significant improvements in “Observed Affect/Mood” measures. Specifically, an increase in “interest”, decrease in “depressed” and borderline significant decrease in “anxiety”. In only 12 weeks! This evaluation, combined with the testimonials and anecdotal evidence of positive change and participation levels, allowed LWD to file a Utility Patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Thus, we are Patent pending. We have been teaching our remarkable program, with the help of our amazing staff, at multiple facilities, both Special Needs and Geriatric, in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. LWD would love to bring our program to your facility. As we expand our business, we will be incorporating DVD sales for home use as well as certifying teachers who would want to bring this program to their communities. For more information, please contact us via email at lookwhosdancing@yahoo.com or through our website at specialneedsdancing.com Now offering Zoom Classes! Keep on Dancing! ■

Planning for the Future of Your Child With Disabilities By Thomas D. Begley JR., CELA

A

s long as we are here, we will take good care of our children with disabilities. The problem arises after we are gone. Who will take care of our children? Where will they live? What will they do for money? What public benefits will be available to them? Who will be sure they will get what they need? Special Needs Planning involves two things: (1) a plan, and (2) a trust. The trust is simply the vehicle by which your hopes and dreams for

P

your special child become reality. The process begins with the development of a plan for your child’s life. It continues with an analysis of what public benefits may be available to pay for some of your child’s needs. It analyzes what your child’s financial needs will be, and how much you will set aside for that child to pay for the lifestyle you want for your child. The trust is a document that you establish for your child. You nominate a trustee, preferably a professional trustee, who will work with your family to see that your child lives the life that you want for him or her. The trust is established now but funded

on your death. The purpose of the trust is to enrich your child’s life and maintain important public benefits. At Begley Law Group, our knowledgeable and compassionate estate planning attorneys work closely with clients and their families to create special needs trusts. We can also serve as trustees for a special needs trust, or offer reliable guidance to families with questions about these useful estate planning tools. ■ Begley Law Group 856-235-8501 Begleylawgroup.com 509 S. arents and guardians of adults with disabilities likely have many concerns when it comes to their child’s future—one being how to navigate life after high school and what lies ahead. School is a safe environment, and now that it’s no longer available, they face the working world. The OTC’s mission is to assist adults with disabilities in reaching their maximum potential through job placement and job training services, day programs, and residential services.

The facility works with adults exclusively; most programs are geared toward adults 21 and older, but some programs are available to those as young as 18. The facility was originally created in 1964 by a group of parents and volunteers motivated by the insufficient employment opportunities at the time. Growing from its beginnings of training a mere eight individuals, the OTC now trains over 700 individuals in a variety of vocational disciplines.

In the vocational program, individuals complete an intake evaluation to determine goals, capabilities, and passions. They are then put into a program that can be best tailored to fit their needs and help them achieve their goals. Some opportunities include recycling operations, food services, custodial maintenance and supported employment, which gives the individual an opportunity to work at companies outside of the OTC. In the day program and group homes, adults learn daily living skills from meal prep and cooking to laundry and how to use a computer. Adults learn these skills to help them in their everyday lives, whether at home or on the job. Trained professionals are a key asset to the success of the OTC. Staff members go through an extensive training process, which includes learning CPR, first aid, how to work with individuals with disabilities, and the laws in place to protect those individuals. Join the Greater Philadelphia Area’s American Cancer Society Daffodil Days® campaign

T

his spring brings a new tool in the fight against cancer: flowers. Daffodils are a universal symbol of hope and life, and they’re at the center of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days® campaign. A newer addition to the Daffodil Days campaign is a bunch of multicolored tulips. This year’s campaign will deliver thousands of flowers across the country to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. We will be collecting orders now through February 22, 2022, for delivery the week of March 21, 2022. Options include: • One bunch of daffodils - $10 • One potted mini-daffodil plant - $15

• One bunch of assorted tulips - $15 • For $25, instead of receiving flowers yourself, you can support the Gift of Hope program where volunteers will deliver daffodils to local hospitals and cancer centers. To place an order, please visit www.gpadaffodildays.org. In addition to providing smiles for those in need, the program raised funds for the American Cancer Society’s life-saving mission of attacking cancer from every angle. The Society works tirelessly to create awareness and impact, to build communities to support those affected by cancer and help with access to treatment. They empower people with information to outsmart cancer

and launch innovative research and develop game changing approaches to addressing the cancer burden for all people. Cancer doesn’t wait. Neither should you. Regular cancer screening can save your life. Learn more at cancer.org/getscreened. ■

Suprising Benefits of Games

P

laying games is, first of all, fun, but the act of playing, and especially learning, new games, also offers an array of educational and life skill benefits for children and adults. Game Friendzy & Bridge Center offers a host of online and in-person games, lessons, and how-to videos for learning and playing bridge, mah jongg, canasta, pinochle, and Dungeons & Dragons. “Playing any game adds joy to life, can relieve stress, connect you with others, and stimulate the mind,” says Bernadette Hennessy May, owner of Game Friendzy. In addition to socialization and collaboration skills, a game like bridge, for example, can also help develop mathematical, strategical, reasoning, problemsolving, listening, and rule-following skills. Learning to play this enduring and popular trick-taking card game is quite beneficial socially and academically for people of all ages, from youngsters to seniors, and everyone in between. Playing bridge has even been compared to competitive athletics in that some of the skills required for both endeavors, such as teamwork, good sportsmanship, strong mental game, and the ability to clear your mind and refocus, are crucial in ev-

eryday life. “It’s just good, all-around exercise for the brain,” Hennessy May says. Game Friendzy offers private and small group online lessons to learn to play bridge or polish playing techniques. Participants and the instructor connect in real time via the free internet sites Zoom and Shark Bridge. Staff members are happy to help “techno-hesitant” folks with online set-up. Opportunities for online pick-up games and tournament play are also available. Additionally, Game Friendzy offers weekly in-person pick-up game sessions at its temporary location in the Conservatory of Musical Arts, 57 E. Kings Highway, Audubon. Bridge and pinochle are played on Thursdays and mah jonng and canasta on Fridays, both 10 am-12 pm. No reservations necessary. And Game Friendzy also hosts three weekly online sessions of Dungeons & Dragons, for kids under 14 on Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm, and for teens and adults on Tuesdays, 7-9:30pm. New adventurers are always invited to join in the crusade! Call Game Friendzy at 856795-PLAY for details on all the various classes and games, including dates, times, fees, and registration information.■
