The launch of Vir tua Health’s 40-foot cancer-screening van will provide South Jersey residents with free mammograms and other cancer screenings with or without insurance through the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Screening Program (NJCEED). The Women’s Opportunity Center in Delran is one of the locations where the van is making a pit stop on Nov. 15. Virtua launched the service in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and it has been making multiple stops so women and men can get mammograms and other vital cancer screenings, all in one place. The van accepts most major insurance plans and provides free services to people without insurance, according to a press release from Virtua Health. A prescription will be provided during the patient’s mammogram appointment, saving an extra trip to the doctor. “We offer a great experience for patients on this new vehicle,” said Michelle Fisher, the unit’s advanced practice

Call to action on a drug-free lifestyle In recognition of last month’s National Red Ribbon Week, the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey encourages students across the state to participate in programs that promote a healthy, drugfree lifestyle. “The red ribbon isn’t just a symbol; it’s a call to action,” said Angelo Valente, the partnership’s executive director. “We ask students to join hands with us and make a meaningful impact in our state. Together, we can inspire a drugfree future and empower our youth to make positive choic-

es.” One partnership initiative is the 2023-’24 fourth grade folder contest, an annual competition for students to showcase their creativity by illustrating the theme, Fun Things to Do Instead of Doing Drugs. Entries will be accepted until Dec. 7. The winning artwork will be featured on 40,000 school folders distributed to New Jersey schools at the beginning of the academic year. A classroom poster with the finalists’ artwork will also be included. The partnership has also

launched its 20th annual Your Song! Your Voice! Shout Down Drugs New Jersey competition, designed to resonate with high-school students who love music. Entrants compose an original piece that revolves around the central theme of substance use prevention. Entries must be submitted by Sunday, March 24. Prizes go to the first-, second- and thirdplace winning songs. For rules and entry details, visit shoutdowndrugs.com. For more information on the folder contest, visit www.drugfreenj.org/4thgraderules.

THE PINELANDS SUN — NOVEMBER 1-7, 2023

‘We are a spooky crew at Cedar Run’ Halloween events show refuge in different light By VANI HANAMIRIAN The Sun Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford hosted two Halloween activities during the past two weeks, Owl-O’Ween Fun at Cedar Run and the Cedar Run for Your Life 2023 guided tour. The refuge is a nonprofit that works to preserve New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation, and rehabilitation. It spans 171 acres and has three miles of hiking trails, houses nearly 60 non-releasable wildlife ambassadors – from Bald Eagle Hallie and Hoo-dini, the great-horned owl – a nature center and a rehabilitation hospital.

Tracey Bloodworth, director of development and communications at Cedar Run, addressed why the refuge decided to host fall activities at its wildlife sanctuary. “We are a spooky crew at Cedar Run, and just love the fall, the crisp of autumn, the change of leaves, birds migrating, and being able to connect with nature in a different way,” she said, adding that the two events were “a great way to experience Cedar Run in a different way.” Owl-O-Ween was held on Oct. 21 and Cedar Run for Your Life was planned for Satuday. Owl-O-Ween also featured a costume contest and parade, crafts and

games, a Halloween movie, a campfire and food and refreshments. This isn’t the first year the wildlife refuge is hosting an event like this,” noted Bloodworth, adding that the response has been positive. “The idea came about during the pandemic as “a fun way to be outside for trick or treating and at a safe distance.” The Cedar Run for Your Life 2023- A Thrilling Guided Night Hike and Scares for Conservation, started as night hikes that were a part of Owl-O-Ween. The crowd tended to be older children, according to Bloodworth, and eventually the tour was held separately.

The tour is actually a guided night hike around the refuge. This year’s theme focused on the infamous Jersey Devil, described as ringmaster of the Leeds Family Circus,” according to Bloodworth. To learn more about the Cedar Wood Wildlife Refuge, Bloodworth encourages all to visit. “Come on out to experience the fun and also help wildlife! Whether you have experienced Cedar Run before when you were younger for a school trip, have been a supporter for a long time, or newly introduced to Cedar Run, we encourage you to come out and learn something new each time.”

Bridge over the Wi-Fi divide

County’s internet service expansion includes buildings, libraries and parks Burlington County has expanded its free public Wi-Fi. County commissioners and other officials marked that significant milestone at historic Smithville Park on Oct. 26. Free Wi-Fi is now available in 20 county-owned buildings; all 15 county library system branches and member libraries; and nine county parks, including Smithville and Smith’s Woods. More than 100,000 users have connected to public Wi-Fi during the last year, according to the county’s Department of Information Technology. “In this day and age, reliable internet is an absolute necessity,” Commissioner Deputy Director Tom Pullion maintained. “It’s needed not just at home or work, but everywhere, including our public spaces and in our parks.” “Extending Burlington County’s free Wi-Fi to our

Lakes Park, Rainbow Meadow Park in Delran, Pennington Park in Delanco, Crystal Lake Park in Mansfield, Long Bridge Park in Hainesport, Arney’s Mount Park in Springfield and Historic Smithville Park and Smith’s Woods in Eastampton. Adding Wi-Fi to the parks and other locations is part of the county’s Burlington County Connects initiative to offer free connections to all county-owned buildings and properties. Doing so allows residents and visitors – including those who can’t afford reliable internet service at home – to access online services. An estimated 15,000 county households had no internet subscription in 2020, according to the U.S. Census. The Wi-Fi service in the parks also allows visitors to utilize online resources, including the Burlington County Parks System App and its maps of in-

terior and regional trails and other amenities. The free app can be downloaded from Apple or Google Play stores or by visiting myocv.com. To log onto the county’s internet service, turn on a device’s Wi-Fi and look for “Burlco” on the wireless network list. Select it and connect. In addition to the parks’ Wi-Fi, the county plans to equip county vehicles such as the Hope One Unit and the Burlington County Library System Bookmobile with equipment to create “hot spots” for free Wi-Fi access during special events, emergencies and other occasions. “Working together, we’re helping to make improvements that enhance our parks, bridge the digital divide and make sure all Burlington County residents have access to information and services available exclusively online,” Pullion said.

Solitary confinement Loneliness and social isolation can hurt, mentally and physically

A

re you lonesome tonight? If so, it may be dangerous to your health. The U.S. Surgeon General recently released a warning that loneliness and social isolation are on the rise nationwide and are linked to serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, depression, dementia and even suicide. Some experts are calling it a national emergency. Nearly one in four of the more than 140,000 respondents worldwide who took part in a new Meta-Gallup survey reported feeling very or fairly lonely, even before the pandemic, CNN reported last month. The 2022-’23 survey found that 24% of respondents 15 and older answered yes to the question, “How lonely do you feel?” The numbers also show that rates of loneliness are highest in young adults, with 27% of those ages 19 to 29 reporting feeling very or fairly lonely. The lowest rates were found in older adults: Only 17% of people 65 and older reported feeling lonely, but of that group, one fourth are considered socially isolated, according to Psychology Today. Loneliness and isolation in the elderly may seem a natural progression of old age, as people lose spouses, family members and friends simply by virtue of living longer. As for the rest of us, people across other age groups are spending less time with each other in person than two decades ago – and we know why that is. That factor, according to the Surgeon General, is most obvious in young people from 15 to 24, who have 70% less social – and personal – interaction with friends, often

because they use cellphones and social media as replacements for in-person relationships, according to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. He also noted that participation in community organizations nationwide has declined in recent decades, causing more isolation. “It’s hard to put a price tag, if you will, on the amount of human suffering that people are experiencing right now,” Murthy told the NPR program “All Things Considered.” “… We are living with technology that has profoundly changed how we interact with each other and how we talk to each other. You can feel lonely even if you have a lot of people around you, because loneliness is about the quality of your connections.” The topic will be addressed at a free session on Monday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Weinberg Commons’ Amy Silvers Community Building on Springdale Road in Cherry Hill. Co-sponsored by Samaritan, the home health-care and hospice provider, the session will

explore risk factors for social isolation and loneliness and offer strategies for making better personal connections. What we do know of such strategies is that they involve some obvious solutions to the problem that individuals can incorporate fairly quickly, including meeting new people and engaging in social activities, joining clubs and other organizations that focus on activities they enjoy, exercising or eating with company and volunteering to help others. “Human beings need social connections to thrive, and being embedded in strong, supportive networks can protect our well-being when we’re faced with difficulties in life,” Dr. Olivia Remes, a mental-health researcher at England’s University of Cambridge, told CNN. Ellyn Maese, a senior research consultant with Gallup, said the survey “is a really good reminder that loneliness is not just a problem of aging. It’s a problem that can affect everyone at any age.”

The war memorial was placed in front of the school sometime after World War II to honor those who served our country, while residing in Shamong, in World War I, World War II and “Those Who Served After.” In 1972 the memorial was expanded to add the two outer wings. These new additions were added to provide sufficient space to continue to honor those who serve/served our Country. Eligible candidates, or their survivors, must provide a DD214 Military Service Record, and proof that the Veteran was a resident of Shamong Township at the time of deployment. Shamong Township current and former residents who qualify may contact the Clerk’s office at (609) 268-2377 Ext. 304 or email jrobertson@shamong.net. The deadline to receive nominations for consideration is Nov. 1. After 100 years of service, the Sally Stretch Keen Memorial Library in Vincentown needs your help. It means the Trust recognizes the importance of our building’s architecture, history, and role as your community library. We are thrilled to be preserving our historic building, but a matching grant means that we need our community to help us raise our share after the grant award, which is $57,000. Scout Durwood commands laughs in ‘The Hook’ By CHUCK DARROW The Sun

When it comes to Scout Durwood, “what you see is what you get” definitely applies. Durwood is one of two comedy stars of “The Hook,” the game -changing presentation at Caesars Atlantic City and the town’s first Las Vegas-style, permanent production. In it, the Kansas City native plays the role of a ship’s captain whose entrance occurs in a most surprising–and spectacularly staged—manner. The character is a bold, unfiltered, take-no-prisoners figure whose sexuality is essential to both her humor and her personality. ‘A h u n d r e d p e r c e n t ,” laughed Durwood during a recent phone chat when asked how much of The Captain is her. “I mean, obviously, I’m maybe a little more nuanced, but [director Cal McCrystal] really let us run with our characters. And he really liked the kind of attitude I bring as a lesbian and a kind of big-personality woman, because we don’t see that a lot. “He really let me kind of run with it, and I love being bold and dismissive. He let me take the role in whatever direction I wanted it to go. Even when we were naming the captain, it was like, ‘What do we wanna call her?’ And I didn’t want a silly name, so I was kind of like, ‘Well, what’s wrong with ‘Captain?” There is something to be said for walking around the theater; everyone salutes me and says, ‘Hello, Captain!’ “I kind of feel like I conned my way into having some sort of title–but I earned it.”

By Chuck Darrow/The Sun

While her work in “The Hook” showcases Durwood’s talents as a natural (X-rated)

comedian, she used the term “multi-hyphenate” several times when describing her-

self—and with legitimate reason: She is also an actress with several TV credits including MTV’s scripted series, “Mary + Jane” and “Youtopia,” a streaming comedy she wrote, directed and starred in (the premise has her as the leader of a cult with otherworldly interactions). When she’s not engaging in those activities, Durwood is a singer whose debut album, “Take One Thing Off,” was turned into a 22-episode streaming series of the same name, and she’s about to release a Christmas album. So from whence does the multi-tasking come? “I think for me, there’s this sense of like, I don’t know, maybe it’s FOMO [Fear of Missing Out],” she offered, “but I just wanted to do it all. I always knew I wanted to be in the arts, to be acting and performing, or a filmmaker; when I was a kid, I would direct little movies for my friends with our camcorder.” Durwood, a scholarship-level soccer player in her youth (she attended St. Joseph’s College in Indiana before transferring to, and graduating from, Amherst College in Massachusetts), added she enjoys show business because it, like sports, is collaborative in na-

The Martins headed back to AC Next year already promises to be a little bit brighter in Atlantic City: Steve Martin and Martin Short are headed back to town for a May 18 show at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City. The superstar duo’s previous performances at Borgata and Hard Rock were among the most entertaining (and downright hilarious) this observer has seen in more than five decades of watching live comedy. As such, I implore you to go see these masters of mirth. I promise you won’t be sorry. For tickets, go to www.ticketmaster.com.

ture. What she’s also enjoying these days is life in Atlantic City which, she admitted, has exceeded her expectations. “We’ve all been blown away by how much we love Atlantic City,” she said of her “Hook” teammates. “I mean, I think we all kind of came here, maybe not kicking and screaming, but maybe eye-rolling a little bit. And now, so many of us are, like, pretty in love with this weird little town.” Durwood’s contract will have her sticking around for a while in this “weird little town,” but she’s keeping at least one eye on the future. She didn’t speak in specifics, but it’s evident she has a game plan. “I really wanna keep creating worlds and to put them on larger and larger stages,” she said. “I love performing; I’m definitely still writing pretty aggressively. And so, I’m gonna keep doing what I do. I just hope that it gets to touch more and more people. “I have a couple different film and TV projects in development—that’s a world that we’d all love to control, but unfortunately none of us can. And I have a live show that I premiered right before (“The Hook”) that kind of got sidetracked by it. “And I have theatrical and writing reps that really believe in me and have my back. So I think I’ll keep doing what I’m doing forever. And that’s one of the nice things about being a multi-hyphenate: It’s all just world-building.” For tickets, go to www. spiegelworld.com/shows/thehook/tickets.
