Welcome to the Helston and The Lizard 2015, bringing you all you need to know about this incredible part of the world. Surrounded by the sea on three sides: east, west and south, The Lizard peninsula is almost an island, studded with pretty fishing villages, coves, beaches and boasting a unique and stunning coastline. Guarding the entrance to this part of the world is the historic town of Helston, which along with the ports of Porthleven and Mullion, offers the visitor the chance to relax, unwind and take in some of the shops, pubs and cafes on offer. To the west you will find towering cliffs and a wild windswept landscape where trees are bent to the wind and Atlantic storms crash against the rocky shore. Along the cattle grazed cliff tops you will find a

display of flora that is unique to this part of the world, with carpets of spring squill and tufts of sea pinks. While inland you will find wild heaths, gently rolling farmland and beautiful woodland walks. To the south lies The Lizard and Lizard Point with the country’s most southerly lighthouse. If you listen carefully you might hear the sound of the Cornish Chough, reintroduced in recent years after decades away, and a bird that is a symbol of Cornwall itself. To the east is the Helford River with its mysterious tree lined banks and its hidden creeks, a haven for smugglers in times gone by, including the world renowned Frenchmen’s Creek. The Lizard is a land apart that is just waiting to be explored, go ahead and find out for yourself.

beaches

Our west coast beaches may often be small, but their hidden beauty is worth a mention – and a visit! Coverack Although rocky, Coverack beach is popular with families and anglers. The beach is also a good area to go for a dive and spot a shipwreck! Gunwalloe Church Cove Perhaps one of the more historical beaches in Cornwall due to its church which dates back to the 1300’s – Gunwalloe Church cove is a fascinating beach to visit whatever the weather! Kynance Cove Located just under 2 miles from the Lizard, Kynance cove with its clear waters and interesting rock formations has been popular since Victorian times. Just so you know - the beach is only accessible at low tide!

Loe Bar - Photo by Anton Wright

Loe Bar Loe bar divides the south west coast path in half and provides a vast expanse of sand to sit and enjoy the clear water ahead. A popular spot for fishermen, Loe bar beach is perfect for a stop off point while walking the coast path – though is not a safe swimming spot.

Polurrian Cove Just seaward of Mullion lies Polurrian cove, which lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Specific Interest. Facing southwest – you almost feel cut off from the world as you take in the beauty of the surrounding area.

Poldhu Cove This popular spot is well known with surfers and families who can enjoy a light refreshment or ice cream from the family run and popular Poldhu Beach Cafe. The cafe also has its own clothing line and there is indoor seating where you can enjoy a good meal. Don’t miss their Pizza nights!

Porthleven After a stroll in the village and an ice cream down at the local parlour, Porthleven beach is perfect for a relax on the sand or a swim in the sea while taking in the vast expanse of coastline ahead of you. When you’ve finished on the beach why not take a quick stroll along the coast path nearby?

Helston

Boasting many independent shops, Helston has retained its character as one of the county’s most ancient market towns. Much of its history can be traced at Helston Folk Museum, which looks back over the centuries. Helston was home to world champion boxer Bob Fitzsimmons and also Henry Trengrouse, inventor of the rocket-fired safety line and lifejacket. The town also has its own real ale, Spingo, brewed on site at the Blue Anchor pub. Helston is probably most famous for its annual celebration of Flora Day each May 8, which attracts tens of thousands of people from across the country. The day marks the arrival of spring with dancing through the streets, as well as in and out of shops and houses. The Ancient Furry Dance is the most colourful and formal, with the women dressed in long dresses and hats, and the men in top hat and tails, while the Children’s Dance involves youngsters from the town’s four schools dressed all in white.

11

Flora Day – a mystery for some, the most anticipated day of the year for others. Held on May 8th each year (unless it falls on a Sunday or Monday), the whole town comes together in celebration of this ancient tradition. Flora Day Eve sees local shop keepers and residents take to the streets to decorate the town with greenery and flowers galore, and the atmosphere in the air before the big day is truly overwhelming. The origins of Flora Day are not 100% clear, however some theories suggest that the day is a triumph of life (spring) over death (winter). Flora day is also a celebration of the feast day of Helston’s patron saint of St Michael. Legend has it that he defeated the devil to claim Helston, in a battle that took place in the skies above the town. The archangel’s victory came when he threw a huge stone at his adversary, causing the devil to fall into the Loe - while the rock itself is said to form the base for where the Angel Hotel now sits today. The perhaps most poignant part of the day are the dances that take place at various times – all led by the infamous Helston Town Band that play the same memorable and well loved tune of ‘The Floral Dance’ each year. All dancers wear a Lily of the Valley as the symbol of the festival. The dance itself takes the form of a procession of couples, with “shuffling” feet interspersed by a chorus of spinning and hopping. Among the dancing, many stalls line the streets showcasing a multitude of wares, and the Fair pitches up at the bottom of the town for those who enjoy a thrill! Flora day is a great day out for anybody of any age – and would be recommended by anyone who has ever experienced it

Porthleven is a quirky little port where the harbour is lined with gift shops, art galleries and restaurants serving the catch of the day.

Prices start from ÂŁ72,000 for a 40% share, subject to eligibility, affordability and availability

Visitors can take a stroll along the harbour, past the white-washed holiday cottages that face the azure sea, before stopping off at one of the two fish and chip shops for some al fresco dining.

Fishing remains a key industry, with fishermen still making a living from the seas in and around the port, with their catches then sold in the village fishmongers.

The Lizard is a wonderful place to holiday at all times of the year. Spring arrives much earlier on the peninsula and great swathes of dazzling daffodils adorn the fields from January through to March. The lanes and hedges burst into flower with an incredible show of colour - primroses, violets, fox gloves and campions followed by bluebells and heady Alexanders. The cliff tops are carpeted with sprig squill, thrift and trefoils. Many of the gardens are open all year and February brings fantastic displays of magnolias and camellias followed by magnificent rhododendrons and azalias as April arrives. The summer brings long lazy days on the beach. The sea is dotted with yachts, kayakers, surfers, windsurfers and pleasure boats. By now the hedges wear a mantle of orange monbretia and cow parsley and the cliffs are draped with exotic hotentot fig, dew plant and stone crop. The autumn is milder on The Lizard and, with quieter beaches and coastal paths, everyone can find their own perfect spot to soak up the Indian summer sun. Visit The Lizard in the Winter to experience the exhilarating storms, crashing sea and wild winds

walks

Cornwall is of course renowned for its stunning scenery – why not discover these walks to really get the most out of the landscape. Penrose Walks Starting in either Porthleven or Helston the walk takes you around Loe Pool and Loe Bar as well as through some beautiful woodland. Park in Porthleven and take the south west coast path towards Loe Bar before entering the Penrose Estate. If you are parking in Helston there is plenty of free parking near the Coronation Boating Lake and a path that takes you down into the Penrose Estate. The tranquil walks through the trees and around Loe Pool are perfect for those who want an active afternoon or those or just need a slow stroll with the family. With a range of routes to choose from, some that have only just been created – you can enjoy a wander through the seasonal flowers all year round. Why not stop at the cafe hidden in the middle of Penrose – if you can find it! Call 01326 561407 for information. Cliff path The south west coast path is a beauty in itself – which

of course showcases Cornwall’s wonderful landscape for 630 miles. There is arguably no greater way to enjoy Cornwall than to walk its coast path with the sea in view 24/7. Summer is particularly remarkable as you weave your way through the hundreds of sea pinks that grow on the hedgerows. Try Porthleven to Gunwalloe Church Cove for an easy stroll, Porthleven to Mullion to step it up a level or Porthleven to the Lizard for those who like a challenge! Helston Although not a typical walking spot – you can make a day out of visiting Helston by getting lost in the town centre and exploring its unique range of shops. Afterwards, head down towards the bottom of the town and enjoy a stroll around the boating lake where you can feed the ducks and admire the swans. Light refreshments and ice creams are also available at the Boating Lake Cafe!

There is no denying that Cornwall is a place of fascination for many, and attracts people from all over the world. So what is it that can really make visiting Cornwall worthwhile? Of course its beaches and walks are an obvious and worthwhile suggestion, and who doesn’t spend most of their days at the beach be it locals or tourists in the summer months? But it is the hidden gems in Cornwall, and of course here in Helston and the Lizard, that can really make a great day out. Here are a pick of the best. Let’s start in Porthleven with the Porthleven Harbour Market. Starting in Easter and finishing at the end of October, the market which opened in 2009, has steadily grown in popularity and today attracts visitors and locals alike. The market boasts a range of stalls overlooking the harbour ranging from crafts to food, and is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm, weather permitting. Moving into Helston, the Helston Folk Museum hosts a large collection of exhibitions which provide an insight into the history of the town and the people of Helston and the Lizard area. Founded in 1949, it reflects social and industrial history including mining, fishing, farming and home life. The musuem also boasts a gallery and a shop which sells a range of local goods. Wander south towards Mullion and you can find Mullion Golf Course. The vast view of sea and sand ensure that a trip to the course will be a memorable one. This challenging coastal course is always in a great playing condition and is well worth a visit. A little further up the road you can find Mullion Meadows. This collection of shops offer a variety of different goods, and the Meadows also boasts a cafe which serves delicious lunches and cakes. Do not miss Trenance Chocolate Factory which is also part of the Meadows, and offers handmade Belgian chocolates to satisfy everyones tastes! Can’t decide on the day? Visit their website and purchase from there! Further up the road to the Lizard you can find Lizard Adventure. Whether you need an adrenaline rush or just want to try out a new activity – all age and ability levels are invited to join the fun! Activities include sea kayaking, coasteering, stand up paddle boarding and climbing. Fancy another type of challenge? Cornwall Segway may be for you. Based in Goonhilly and Newquay, experience this fun and unique form of transport which is easy to ride and suits most ages and abilities! Perfect for group events, families or couples. On the other end of the scale, a perfect family day out could consist of a ‘Cornish Pisky Trail’. You can buy a trial for only £2 from the Cornish Pisky Pal stall, check their website for the next trail! Cornish Pisky Pals also make handmade ‘Piskies’ – perfect for souvenirs! Finally we come to Roskilly’s Farm, which is free to visit and offers a great afternoon out for all the family. Take a stroll around the meadows and ponds and of course sample their delicious icecreams made with rich organic Jersey milk from the local herd. Perfect!
