The art of lying COMEDY star of radio and screen, Alex Horne, has done a lot of things in his life – he’s bungee jumped off the Eiffel Tower, been punched by John Prescott and came second in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest – but one thing he hasn’t done much is tell the truth. He’s told jokes – an awful lot of jokes, a lot of awful jokes. And he’s done a load of lovely shows using PowerPoint, Tim Key and a handful of musicians. But he’s never just talked honestly about himself. Anemones by Robert Jones
Double the delight BESIDE the Waves Gallery in Falmouth hosts a double header of work this month as it brings together two esteemed artists whose works are a tribute to the fundamentals of painting. Robert Jones and Philip Hogben are presented here in a special collection from November 2 to 9. Jones has been exhibiting with Beside The Wave for over 20 years. This long career has established Robert as one of Cornwall’s best-loved painters of the sea, the horizon a viewpoint he returns to time and time again. Painterly, fresh and full of energy his paintings have a bold authority in the simplicity of their content, usually no more than sea and sky, with occasional birds or rocks offering an anchor point. His interest in changing weather and light patterns is an enduring passion, he says himself he is always looking up; the skyward view a constant fascination. Beginning with
sketches outdoors, final paintings are completed in the studio, the sketches acting as a trigger to the artist’s bank of visual memories. A series of small paintings ‘memories at sea’ adds another element to the exhibition. The artist has also included a collection of small paintings of musicians. Music has been a recurring theme over the years. The anemone paintings were made from bouquets presented to friends of the Jones family, the Benyounes quartet. For this exhibition subjects drawn directly from life are the central theme in Philip Hogben’s painting. Working from his studio in the hills to the north of Helston, open fields and the distant ocean offer an expanse of space and contrast of scale. He seeks what is interesting, elegant and beautiful in everyday life. Direct observation is his
starting point; he refers to himself as a magpie, looking for things that take his fancy. Subjects are often domestic, collected from home, a recent walk or family visit. Back in the studio he makes sketches and drawings, studying the objects at different viewpoints in changing light conditions. These studies form the basis for the paintings that follow. For Hogben, painting is a solemn business. Struggle and risk an inherent part of the process. He says: “Do something radical and the painting can come alive”. This conviction is one shared for over 40 years teaching at University College Falmouth. Now a professional painter, Hogben is at last concentrating solely on his own work. Ender's Game (12A) THIS generation of handheld and touchscreen champions are called into action after a hostile alien race called the Formics invades our home and is repelled at the last minute by International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Sir Ben Kingsley), who sacrifices his life to bring down the extraterrestrial mothership. The International Military prepares for the next attack by scouring the globe for the best young minds and bringing together raw recruits at Battle School where their talents can be honed. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) is one hopeful, determined to succeed where his older brother Peter (Jimmy Pinchak) and sister Valentine (Abigail Breslin) failed, and impress highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford). “He’s the one," Graff tells second-in-command, Major Gwen Anderson (Viola Davis), impressed by Ender’s progress. “That’s what you said about his brother,” retorts Anderson warily. At Battle School, Ender distinguishes himself and he is transferred to the Salamanders squad managed by a bully called Bonzo (Moises Arias), who won’t allow anyone to outshine him in front of the colonel. Thankfully, Ender’s kindness and selflessness wins many friends including Petra (Hailee Steinfeld), Bean (Aramis Knight) and Bernard (Conor Carroll).

Dodge Brothers make first appearance in Duchy
One off Cornish date for duo DEVORAN Acoustic Session on Friday, November 8, will be one of only two west country appearances for Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts on their autumn tour. The BBC Radio 2 Folk Show ‘Best Duo’ 2013 nominees, Katriona and Jamie, combine astounding lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies, creating a powerful wall of sound. In 2011 Katriona and Jamie spent five weeks touring with folk-rock legends Fairport Convention, completed a 30-date nationwide tour in their own right and performed at two of
Britain’s largest acoustic music festivals - Cambridge Folk Festival and Fairport’s Cropredy Convention. In September 2012 Gilmore & Roberts released their album The Innocent Left. The show starts at Devoran Village Hall at 7.30pm (doors 7pm) and tickets are £11 in advance for 01872 262466 / www.hallforcornwall.co.uk or £12.50 on the door.
THE Dodge Brothers head to Cornwall for a show at The Acorn in Penzance next week with a familiar face among the band. The Observer’s chief film critic Mark Kermode makes up one quarter of The Dodge Brothers, a Southampton-based British skiffle band. The other Dodge Brothers are Mike and Alex Hammond, and Aly Hirji. Appearing on Saturday, November 9, the authentic four-piece of double bass,
guitars, harmonica and various household appliances are also making an appearance at The Cornwall Film Festival in Newquay in the afternoon where they will be accompanying a selection of scenes from silent films of the 1920s. This will be the first time The Dodge Brothers play in the Duchy. The Dodge Brothers released their third album The Sun Set CD in September of this year, recorded at the
legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, home to the early recordings of Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Expect a night of foot stomping, hand clapping, good time music, from Americana, rockabilly, bluegrass, folk and country to blues in a venue that is quirky and charismatic and perfect for stepping back into the 1950s. For tickets or for more information see theacornpenzance.com/
07 Dub Pistols blast into Princess Pavilion with a riotous show ONE of the most rock n’ roll acts out there, the Dub Pistols revisit Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion on Saturday, November 9 with their riotous blend of ska, dub, hip-hop, electro, breakbeat, punk and drum and bass. Along with contemporaries the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, the Dubs initially surfed the late ‘90s big beat wave with tracks like Cyclone, Westway and There’s Gonna Be A Riot before swerving into the more political Six Million Ways To Live album. The procession of guest vocalists who’ve joined them in the intervening decade or so reads like a roll call of urban legends. UK hip-hopper Rodney P, Special’s frontman Terry Hall, late reggae great Gregory Isaacs, Freak Power man Ashley Slater, Beats International’s Lindy
Layton, acid house original Justin Robertson… the list goes on. Yet, despite these top collaborators, the Dubs have somehow still managed to remain a cohesive unit. Their sense of fun, entertainment value and tireless ability to make crowds jump has carved a Dubs-shaped niche on the music circuit and made them something of a phenomenon. The show starts at 8pm. Advance Tickets £13 - available from the Pavilion box office on 01326 211222. Or book online via SeeTickets and Hall for Cornwall.
